My brain is fried. Not totally, but it's crispy around the edges. I've been working on Easter eggs. Not the color-me-purple, pink, green and blue shells of chickens, but the sorts of secret things hidden in video games. Only my Easter eggs aren't going into video games; they're going into Greenville. While not hard to produce, they are tedious, so I'm not finished even though I've spent an entire morning on them.

Sorry about not posting for a couple of days. RealLife issues took more time than expected, plus I ended up pushing my bod further than expected so I've had to spend less time at the comp and more time in pain management. If this keeps up I'm going to have to do a
sudo upgrade
on my pain meds.

Frank Taylor: New Google Earth 4.3 (beta) Available - Version 4.3.7284.3916. No new features, but a number of bug fixes. Either way if you like Google Earth and you love how GE 4.3 is progressing you'll want to get the latest update. There's also been an Imagery Update with a lot of new areas getting images, especially high resolution images.

Barry Burbank/Beyond the Forecast: Dewpoint Discussion. As someone who grew up in the deep south I always heard relative humidity being talked about in the weather reports. Once I moved to Boston I started hearing about the dewpoint and had no clue what it was. WBZ's Barry Burbank has a great blog post about the difference between relative humidity and dewpoint, as well as why the dewpoint is a better measure of how oppressive the weather is.

Ross A Del Duca: WINE Whine WINE. An excellent post about WINE for those who wonder what the hell I'm talking about when I discuss WINE, as well as why I capitalize the whole word. If you have questions about running Windows apps in Linux, you definitely want to read Ross' post.

Dennis Kaarsemaker: Gnome 3.0. Yesterday Og Maciel had a nice little post about tabs within tabs, and Dennis gives us a sneak peak at something I expect is coming in GNOME 3.0. I had to post a comment on his blog asking for more info about his screenshot because I'd love to be able to use whatever it is he's showing.

Debian Package of the Day: email-reminder: Never forget a birthday or an anniversary again! This handy little program uses a small cronjob to send you an email reminding you of impending birthdays and anniversaries. I used to have this kind of thing on my PDA and I love the ability to have it on my desktop computer. It even has a simple GUI to add the events to remember.

Christer Edwards: Please Insert 25 Cents To Login. I'm going to have to check out this Easter egg the next time I restart my comp, or at least log out once I finish blogging and checking it.

I Can Has Cheezburger: Teh Ten Commandments of Ceiling Cat. I need to make this into a desktop wallpaper, and I bet every cat lover out there will laugh at how true it is.

There, that wasn't so bad now, was it? I hope to get back to almost daily posts of one sort or another soon, although tomorrow looks crazy and I won't be able to post much until at least noonish on Tuesday. I hope you guys (and gals) are having a nice weekend. Here's hoping the week doesn't get off to too horrid a start.

Of all the music artists I’ve listened to, none even compare in the art of subliminal messages

Of all the music artists I've listened to, none even compare in the art of subliminal messages than Linkin Park. Not only that, but the amount of wisdom and philosophy tucked under the hood of their songs is awe-inspiring- at least for me. I believe that the Bible is intended not as a manual to living life, but to understanding why we live life the way we do. To understand the Bible, you must realize that it does not matter how things turn out ultimately (the ends), or even what our intentions were (the means)- Both of these are irrelevant. What truly matters is that we understand why we live life the way we do- the Bible helps us understand this, but what really makes it unique- and what makes Linkin Park unique, is that the more that you read it, and relate it to your own perception, the more you can learn from it. In particular, Linkin Park's song "Forgotten" has the most meaning of any of their songs (to me), and the translation found in "Reanimation" actually leaves even more meaning behind. So this is the 3rd post I've had that's a homage to "Forgotten", and the title is actually one of the lines in that song:

("Then with the eyes shut / looking through the rust and rot and dust / a small spot of light floods the floor | And pours over the rusted world of pretend | The eyes ease open and its dark again")

When people are in love, be it with God, some religion, google, or another human, many times- probably most times it starts with blind passion. The problem with blind passion though, is that if our perception of our object of desire changes even in the slightest, be it by change of information (i.e. "you were lying when you said you were rich?!?") change of priority (i.e. "I don't get the sex I 'need' from him/her") or just learning new information (i.e. "I'm having a baby")

When I was a Christian, and when I was in love, I really knew I was a Christian and in love. There was no doubt in my mind- I was on fire for Jesus and loved Elyse. But, in retrospect it was blind passion for both her and God. So the question is, "Was I really in love and a Christian"?

The answer is both true and false. In the present I was not, but in the past I was. In other words, the ability to look back gives us the ability to see things that no longer exist as if they did, because they exist in memory (which is also explained in "Forgotten"). We have all sorts of different realities, but the ones with which this post is especially concerned, is the realities of past, present, and future. That is, are the realities of past and future just as "real" as that which is right in front of us- the present?

I would say yes, and here's why: Because in the past I was in love, and was a Christian, I was able to learn and grow from it- after all, how would I know that it was "blind passion" now, unless I had matured? Even if I was blind, I still lived as if it was true, because I believed it to be. As long as we believe, it is true- it only is false if we believe it as such. As I explained in Id versus Ego, faith is a product of Id, naturally because Id's essence is blind desire/passion. No logic can convince a person driven by Id of anything, since Id is illogical. This knowledge has helped me understand human psychology and motivation a great deal- before I was constantly irritated by other's actions, because they were illogical. Now I know why. Id is still truth, just a different kind of truth. So logically, I wasn't a Christian and I wasn't in love, but I was illogically- no doubt about that.

Christians often cite the fact that people underwent so much persecution in the name of Jesus, and of Christianity. So much work was done, so much was sacrificed, so many lives given. So it must be true, right? Until now I have either suspended judgement, or discounted their actions as foolish. But while Christianity may be illogical in essence, it wasn't supposed to be any more than God is. So that claim, in its own right, is justified. However, it should be noted that it was, and is, true to Christians. It was true to me, but not anymore. The Bible however, does have some truth to me though.

I'll probably add to this later, but that's good enough for now...

If you have been checking the tech blogs lately you might have come across a lot of easter eggs posts. First lifehacker did a Software Easter Eggs post, then today Webware has combined a list of 10 internet easter eggs.

What are easter eggs anyways? To the first timers it may seem what the hell are you guys talking about! Well to clear off the dust and demystify "Easter Eggs" let me mention that Easter Eggs are little amusing tidbits that the creators of the softwares, games etc leave in their products for the users to discover them. They may range from a "Hello" to a Game of Tetris in µtorrent!

Since it is the Easter Eggs Year (I made this up!), I thought I should also contribute and add some of the Easter eggs that I know about :), So here I go:

The Google Reader Ninja Code ( ↑↑↓↓← → ← → B A), displays a Ninja in the Sidebar (Also mentioned in the Webware list)

The Photoshop Merlin: Hold the Alt Key, go to the layer pallete and click the arrow for layer pallete menu and choose "pallete options"

The Firefox 3 Robot: Type about:robots in Firefox 3 address bar

XP Star Wars: Type TELNET at command prompt, hit enter, then type the letter o and hit enter again, then type towel.blinkenlights.nl and press enter.

Illustrator Credits: Press CTRL, ALT and click on the Venus picture on the top of the toolbar.

XP Solitaire instant win: press ALT + SHIFT + 2

Minesweeper Trick: Type xyzzy and press SHIFT+ENTER, now the topleft pixel of the screen will change color when you hover over a mine!

Yahoo and Skype hidden emoticons: for skype type - (mooning) (finger) (bandit) (toivo) to get the respective emoticons and for yahoo see here

OpenOffice.org Calc games: Type =Game("StarWars") and hit enter or in a cell outside of the range A1:C3 type =Game(A1:C3;"TicTacToe")and hit enter

There were more.. I wasted enough time thinking about them, so let it be these only for the time being, I will add more when I remember them. Meanwhile why don't you guys tell me a few in comments?

Comics bought and read on Saturday the 21st of June 2008.

Our theme this week is fan service. I thank you.

Wolverine #66
Written by Mark Millar
Drawn by Steve McNiven
Published by Marvel Comics

Mark Millar continues to stretch his tentacles over the MU with this, the self-professed "all time greatest adventure" of Wolverine's terribly exciting, super adventurous fictional life. Like much that is super exciting in the world of comics, Millar and Marvel editorial have decided to step outside continuity for a The Endesque tale set thirty years post the final victory of all supervillains everywhere over the superheroes. In true Marvel fashion, the world is now ruled over by Marvel's top-tier baddies, who have carved up the globe into evil fiefdoms. Wolverine, one of the last heroes still standing, makes a timid living as a homesteader who refuses to rock the boat in an effort to keep his family safe, and, it's hinted, not to compound some terrible failure from his dark past. Then Hawkeye turns up with a proposition.

You feeling where we are yet?

This is Post-Apocalypse as Western, with Wolverine as the hard luck character who can't escape his sins no matter how long or how hard he fights for redemption. Logan is, of course, well-suited to this kind of story, in fact it might be said by critics less generous than I that this kind of shit has been done to death, after all isn't that the job description of Wolverine Origins? Me, well, in theory I'm prepared to give Millar the benefit of the doubt on that score. By throwing off continuity he's clearly gunning for something a little more pure, less sullied by convoluted nonsense, and I can appreciate that. I'm also squarely of the opinion that a good writer (and Millar is capable of good writing) should be capable of buffing up this hoary old plot and making it work for Jimbo.

But, ya see, I said "in theory", because for some worrying reason, Millar has failed to inoculate himself against the plague of continuity inspired references that work to transform a disproportionately large number of these alternative continuity stories into weird nostaglia-fests. You know the kind of thing: where you're constantly presented with not-so-intriguing updates on old friends, foes, concepts and plot points. Here we get the Hulk's hillbilly grandchildren, a blind (DO YOU SEE!) Hawkeye, Logan's son "Scott", and a graffitied and reappropriated fantasticar. Perhaps the worst offense, the one which threw this entire complaint into light, was the utterly arbitrary inclusion of the fucking Spidermobile. I mean, for why? What the Christ is that doing in this "all-time greatest" Wolverine story? Answer: it's got nothing to do with Mr Slice and Dice, it's just wank-fodder for trainspotters.

Had Millar managed to keep a lid on that particular bout of hardcore geekery I probably wouldn't have taken my moaning much further than a harumph, as it is he set me off on a hunt for every weak-ass instance of conceptual jiggery pokery I could find. Suddenly the idea that America is divided into Kingpin Land, and Principality of Doom, or whatever, starts to fuck me off no end. It's just arse, isn't it? Complete, hackneyed, no-brained, short-cut to thinking, self-referential arse. It makes no sense, it has no justification other than that's the kind of thing we expect from this kind of thing. I dunno, are fans really more concerned with all this superfluous rubbish than they are with fully exploiting what could have been a pretty decent set-up? Doesn't Millar see that the inclusion of the Spidermobile works against the virtues of the alternative continuity setting? It's just all so... so parochial: the Marvel Universe as a sequence of bloody easter eggs, rather than an expansive space in which all kinds of stories can be told.

I blame George Lucas. Seriously.

DC-WildStorm Dreamwar #3
Written by Keith Giffen
Drawn by Lee Garbett & Trevor Scott
Published by DC Comics & WildStorm

DC vs Wildstorm? This is dirty, filthy comics, and it knows it.

If trainspotting is a popular fan pastime, then poring over comics' very own answer to slash-fiction - brawling superheroes - must be the zenith of fan entertainment. Marvel has devoted not one but three mega-crossovers to the activity, for gawd's sake. DC's never gone in for it in quite such an ostentatious way, but this ain't the first time the DC and the WU have butted heads and it probably won't be the last. What's different here, however, is scale. This is, quite literally, every bloody hero both universes can muster beating the living shit out of each other.

YUSSS!

Now, okay, I've been bitching about the anal preoccupations of comicdom, but in the interest of clarity I feel full disclosure is in order: it's not that I'm immune to the peculiar charms of the comics I'm criticising, it's that I hate it when those charms disappear uparsewards, as they did in Wolverine this month. What Giffen and co are up to here is all about those special little details that tickle the fannybone - how those all too familiar powers and personalities interact - but it has a kineticism and accessibility that forces it out of the fan-dominated cul-de-sac.

It's one fuck-off fight, basically, and I'm deffo man enough to admit to enjoying some cape on cape action, especially when it's of the naughty, transgressive no holds barred to-the-death variety. I want to see Hawksmoor pound on Superman, and Batman and Zealot make out with the sharp objects and fists. This is as close as we get to seeing our icons fuck each other, woman on man, man on woman, man on man, woman on woman on man on man, it's all here and it's all good. That said, rocket science this ain't, all Giffen really has to do is not screw up horribly and he's got a book with sex appeal (anything more would be a bonus, but unnecessary) and on that score he mainly succeeds. Sure, the art ain't great, but as long as it's consistent, undistracting and reasonably articulate, which, a few dodgy panels aside, it is, then it's thumbs up all round.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't exactly good comics. There's no artistic flair, no startling new ideas, very little in the way of characterisation, next to no plot. It's at best hackery, but it's hackery in the service of superhero comics' most frequently forgotten, but perhaps most appealing component: the fight sequence. And I can get with that, I really can, I just don't want too much too often - and make no mistake, DC vs WildStorm is most definitely too much. It's 100% proof silliness, but seeing as it's a miniseries and there's nothing else like it on the shelves, I can't see an overdose in my near future.

In case you didn't know what a software 'easter egg' is, it's any kind of function software developers hide in software just for fun. For example, an older version of Microsoft Excel had a built in flight simulator game! How to access these hidden 'easter eggs' is usually in some unconventional way decided by the developer. The latest find is when you search for the word 'gay', the Google results page has a rainbow stripe (the rainbow being a common symbol for the gay community) down the right hand side. Thanks to Google Blogscoped, where I first saw this.

Another fun easter egg is a common video game geek fact: press up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A in the classic NES game Contra and you would get 30 lives. Press this exact same combination in Google Reader and a ninja pops up on your subscription list. It will also make all your subscription show 30 unread items.

One more easter egg can be found by searching for 'Google Easter Egg'. The top result link to http://www.google.com/Easter/feature_easter.html. It's an Easter themed game where you control a rabbit trying to collect falling eggs.

PC World has a great list of many other Google easter eggs.

DesktopLinux.com: Sample chapter available for revised Ubuntu book. Rickford Grant, author of Ubuntu for Non-Geeks, has updated the book to cover Ubuntu Hardy. You can get a free sample chapter to see if it may be something you'd want to buy.

Christer Edwards: Mozilla Firefox Easter Eggs. There are several hidden goodies in Firefox 3, and Christer tells us where to find some of them. I love the new one about robots. :)

Asa Dotzler: search toolbars considered. Some people hate search toolbars, some people love them. But Asa looks at the possibility that they're no longer needed thanks to the powerful search tool built right into Firefox.

Steven Harms: Simple. Steven lists the things he did in Ubuntu this past week. "without opening any consoles or terminals." [Emphasis his] He even looks at some excuses why people wouldn't want to use Ubuntu.

Matt Galvin: The Linux Hater Inspires Microsoft Hating. I don't know how many of you know about the Linux Hater blog, but it's a Microsoft fanboi's soapbox for trashing Linux. Clearly the writer has no interest in actually trying Linux for any length of time to see if it could be as good as his precious Windows. But someone has started a Microsoft Hater blog specifically to counter some of the crap the Linux Hater writes. My only problem is that it feeds the Windows/Linux war, much of it just being a lot of trash talk which probably doesn't do much except show the writers may be in their mid-teens. And we have enough of that all over the place as it is. We even have some of that on the Linux Forums, as someone recently wrote on the Mac4Lin thread that if we want to have a Mac look and feel we should just go and buy a Mac. When I called him on it he asked if I could be more condescending. And yes, I could. :p

Philip Newborough: Aenigma Fonts for Ubuntu. Philip has created packages with over 400 fonts created by Brian Kent, and some of the decorative fonts are pretty nice. I may have to use Embossing Tape myself before long.

Watch this space later today (or perhaps tomorrow morning) for my promised post on exactly what I dislike about Firefox 3.
