This was a very pleasant surprise. I was searching for music and stumbled across a Greek website which offers free downloads of some long out of print or not very well known Greek bands. Now the reason I found this site is because I was looking for the records of Free Yourself. I own all their stuff on vinyl but while moving with the flow of time it's rather inconvenient to carry around a portable record player. Let's face it, mp3 is a much more convenient thing nowadays. So, yes, I found almost all of the stuff on this website and while I'm at it I thought I might just as well write a few things about the records.

Self-titled 7" EP [1994]

I purchased this one at a show at the legendary Rhenania, some sort of half-legalized squat on the banks of the Rhine in the old harbour region. Since this was pretty close to where my parents live I used to go there quite often to watch bands play for small money. The show would start late and most of the time I had to leave early thus missing the headlining band because my mother wanted me to be back home at around midnight. I believe I got this one at a Snuff/Kick Joneses show in 1995 and I bought it from Milto, Free Yourself's guitarist, along with the other two records out on Blurr records at the time, Quest For Rescue's "Cauliflower" EP and a 7" by Horace Pinker. Blurr magazine, which I picked up only a few months earlier for the first time, was mad about those guys mentioning them all the time so I wanted to know what the hype was all about. And this record still proves to be great. Okay, it's rather simple and at that time a lot of bands were playing that style, but because of the Greek lyrics for some songs it's special. The biggest hit at that time for me was "Smile", a dub-influenced song with very very..., well, let's say, the lyrics are very.... well, plain... but nonetheless great. I hold this dear because this led to my only stagedive I ever did in my entire life up until now. I saw them play somewhere and Dimi, their singer, mixed the lyrics in the second verse. So I teased him with this and he only replied "fine, next time it's your turn to sing". So when they played at Cologne's Between club a few weeks later they played "Smile" again and before the second verse Dimi looked at me and simply said "your turn". Well, there was no escape, I got up on the stage, sang the second verse (horribly, I think) and exited by jumping into the crowd. Good times.

Antar ma una [1996]

The first full length recording, I have no idea when I bought this one, it must have been at some show. I also can't remember if there was a release party, maybe it was at some show at the Geschwister-Scholl-Haus in Neuss where the Blurr crew set up brilliant concerts for small money. Everybody I knew was looking forward forward to the release and the song "Suitcase" which was released on the "Squeal of Blurr" Compilation earlier raised expectations a lot. I still like this one very much and me and the guys in amodestproposal owe Free Yourself a lot for allowing us to accompany them on a small three-day trip through the south of Germany in November 2000. We wanted to say thank you by doing an English cover of "Kathreftis/Mirror", the bonustrack on the vinyl version. I still remember when we played the song for the first (and only) time at Freiburg's KTS and Milto came all the way from the mrechandise table to dance in front of the stage, screaming "I know this song, I know this song". Great memories.

Split 7" with Foiled Again [1997]

This came out on Kabuki Records, a new label founded by Andi and Fränkie, two guys from Blurr Records. They also released a single by a band called Tristesse (formerly known as Tristesse de la Lune) which I really liked and I even own some Demo Tapes of them. Anyway, Free Yourself share this record with Foiled Again, another Pop Punk band from Düsseldorf who released another 7" on Kabuki Rec. Both bands shared some sort of Greek origin since three guys in Free Yourself are Greek and the singer in Foiled again was so as well. The two songs are a little bit more upbeat than on their previous recordings and maybe it's just me but I think I sense slightly more melodies in this. For the first time they experimented with German lyrics. "Iz a guf" is just a perfect live song and the part where Dimi counts to four in Greek is always done by the audience as well. This record is important to me because this year marks the starting point of my travels with the guys. I was lucky enough to accompany them on a two day trip to Minden and Bremen where they played with our new favourites Painted Thin from Canada who would end up in Bands like The Weakerthans or Sixty Stories.

The Head Of Truth On The Body Of Lie [1999]

The second full length was worth the wait and it was released on the band's newly founded label Buenaventura Notes. Two years had passed and everyone was anxious for the new record. I knew quite a few songs before because I went to so many shows where they played new material so it wasn't that much of a surprise to find a few songs on this recording. But the way how they were recorded was just wonderful. Rough, yet clear, passionate, great samples in between some songs, this is Free Yourself at their best. "Esy edo", the second song, is such a brilliant song with Milto's wife Popi speaking the intro sentences and then singing/screaming the chorus with the band and Milto's sister, I think. Heck, they even got Lunchbox singer Patrick to sing a few songs. Lunchbox were THE Dischord-like band at the end of the 90s in Germany. I don't know at what time of the year this came out, but it must have been after the Easter tour with Stateless In The Universe, a Greek crustcore band who are great friends with the guys. I was lucky enough to hang around with them for four days having the time of my life.

Self-titled CD EP [2008]

We all had to wait quite some time. There was one life sign in the meantime though, a two-track CD entitled "Beweg Mich" in 2003, but unfortunately that is the onyl record I don't own. This year then the band decided to get together again to record some remaining songs just for the sake of putting them on a record. This is another Buenaventura Notes release and if I believe what our singer Pascal told me this was all down DIY style in just a few days. Only a couple of days for the recording, the CDs were done at home copying them one by one, the covers were done in one day and that was it. It looks simple, it sounds simple to do, but the music just isn't. This is yet another example of Free Yourself at their best. Three songs, two of them in German, one in Greek and it even features the hit of our November 2000 trip, "Kuss", a song they had just written recently. Me and my boys would always wait for the end of the show because "Kuss" was the closing tune. It's great to hear them play together and it was even better to watch them play another show again. Hopefully we can share the stage again at some point in the future.

Ich war trotz anfänglicher Quengeleien meinerseits mit Nana und Feber auf der Rheinkirmes in Düsseldorf. Und ich muss sagen, so einen schönen entspannten Tag hatte ich lange nicht mehr und bätsch... es war hier viel bunter als auf der LP und Trance und Techno lief hier auch überall!! Nur waren hier wirklich keine anstrengenden besoffenen asozialen Jugendlichen, die einen ständig anpöbeln und begrapschen wollen, *grins* alle in Dortmund!! Und man musste auch nicht stundenlang anstehen nur um eines der wirklich interessanten nund vielfältigen Fahrgeschäfte mit eigener Anwesenheit zu bespammen.^^ Alles sehr ruhig und das unbestämdige Wetter konnte man auch gut ignorieren. Am besten gefiel mir jedenfalls diese geniale Achterbahn im Dunkeln mit diesen Licht-, Laser- und Feuereffekten. Einfach nur großartig!! Wirklich romantisch war auch das Riesenrad bei Sonnenuntergang, zwar ohne Partner, aber eben mit wirlich meinen allerliebsten Beiden. <3 Was uns Allen wohl überhaupt nicht gut getan hat, war diese etwas ältere Raupe, bei der die Gondeln neweglich waren. Also Rückenschmerzen, Nackenschmerzen, Übelkeit und Schwindelgefühl war so die Folge davon. Ansonsten gibt es eigentlich noch so viel zu erzählen darüber, über das Ganze Blinkbilnk und rasantes Tempo, viel Deko und die gewonnenen Pflanzen, aber ich kann wirklich nur jedem empfehlen dorthin zu gehen, es ist wirklich unvorstellbar großartig, sehr vielseiteige verschidene Attraktionen u.A. wirklich ein bizarres 70er Jahre Effektschow-zelt und ein Steilwandfahrer und eine Wahrsagerin, ein kleines franz. Dorf mit Eifelturm eine hundert Jahre alte 52m lange Rutsche und natürlich Dinge wie Freefalltower, Breakdancer und Krake , 5 Autoscooter und vielen Losbuden für Freunde des Standards.^^

Leider konnte ich keine Fotos machen, da hai die Cam mit in Dortmund hatte, aber wie gesagt, man muss es wirklich selbst erleben, ein einzelnes Foto kann so einen wunderbaren Tag einfach nich festhalten. Auf Flickr gibts jede Menge schöne Bilder dazu:

Das Augenoptikunternehmen wird die Flächen in der Schadowstraße 59/Ecke Wagnerstraße 1a voraussichtlich im Herbst 2008 beziehen. Vormieter im Objekt war eine Filiale von Gold Kraemer, die im August schließen wird.

Nach dem Konzert - Koni und ich schon leicht durchgeschwitzt - gab es noch einen Gang über die Kirmes. Gewohnheitsmässig wurden gebrannte Mandeln und Fruchtspieße gekauft - hmmmm - lecker! Für euch hier noch ein zwei Bilder von dem ganzen Geglitzer!

Die Fielmann AG, Hamburg, mietete ein fünfgeschossiges Geschäftshaus mit 230 Quadratmetern Einzelhandelsfläche sowie Nebenflächen in Düsseldorf über die Retail-Berater von Atisreal.

Komische Welt.

During the summer, Vancouver is connected to the hub airports of Europe by charter flights.  These include the usual cities like, London, Manchester, Glasgow, Frankfurt, Paris, and Amsterdam.  However, there are some new destinations too.  Zurich opens up the breathtaking sights of Switzerland, as well as Dusseldorf for Germany and Central Europe.  The latest addition is Dublin for southern Ireland - original draft Guinness is closer than you think.

So what Mediterranean countries have you always wanted to visit but thought that they were always out of your reach?  Well, no they're not.  How about the Spanish Costas?  For example, Costa Dorada (Salou airport), which boasts one of Europe's largest theme parks called Port Aventura. Possibly the spanish Canary Islands, such as Tenerife. You will find luxury spas, new theme parks, designer shops, cosmopolitan marinas, and the last word in hotels; these draw visitors to the island's stylish south while ecologically minded and active travellers come to discover the lush forests, small coastal towns, and the mountain villages of the North. All these "destinations with a difference" can be booked from Canada.

So forget the usual vacation spots like Mexico and the Caribbean, be the envy of your friends when you show them your holiday photos with a "difference".  I grew up holidaying at these Mediteranean destinations and many others, so go on pick my brains, I will be happy to recommend some of these destintions to you based on what you're looking for.

My family and I just returned from an exciting 2 week jaunt across the pond to Germany, Belgium, England, France, Portugal and Spain.  Now I'd use the phrase "words can't describe" the amount of fun we had on our trip but this IS a blog and well, words are all I have. 

I guess I'll start at the beginning for this post and then I can add more stories of the trip in subsequent posts.  So it starts like this:

Day 1: Miami - everyone was so excited that the fact that we had to walk across the entire airport really did nothing to dampen our spirits.  Moving things around from one backpack to another so that all of our baggage was under 8 Kilos also had little effect on us.  We did a great job of taking this trip and not checking any luggage, all in backpacks which fit nicely overhead!  Thanks, Rick Steves!  I will say that the most security that we encountered on the entire trip was leaving the U.S. in fact it was very lax in all the other countries to our surprise.  The rest of the day was spent on board Air Berlin to Dusseldorf.  But it really wasn't bad.  They still give you meals, drinks and even on-board movies.  And as an added bonus they supply you with an nice little package containing a sleep mask, ear plugs, a tooth brush and tooth paste and socks so you can kick off your flip flops and have nice and toasty tootsies while you sleep. 

At the other end of our flight, there was no customs, no security and no clear direction where to go so we fumbled around Dusseldorf airport until we could find a train that would take us close enough to our hotel, to walk the rest of the way. So we checked in at our hotel, Hotel Batavia, dropped off our things and headed out to explore Dusseldorf.

Som 14-åring bytte han klubb till Wuppertal SV, men när Schalke fick syn på ynglingen sommaren 2005 valde Mohamed att ta det stora klivet till Gelsenkirchens stolthet. I Schalkes U-19 lag hade målvakter som Fährmann, Heimeroth och Neuer tidigare spelat, så det var ganska stort att ta en ordinarie plats där, men Amsif lyckades på ett bra sätt. Efter att han bland annat gjort U-18 landslagsdebut för Tyskland vid en ålder av 17 år började folk förstå att det var en stor målvaktstalang Schalke hade funnit. Den här sommaren valde Schalke att skriva ett proffskontrakt med Amsif, som sträcker sig till 2010. Just nu är han fjärde/femtemålvakt så en utlåning, kanske nästa säsong?, är trolig. Av att dömma från dagens träningsmatch så finns det dock potential i honom, och vi får se om han kan ta upp kampen med Neuer om platsen som förstemålvakt i framtiden. För att göra det krävs det en väldigt bra utvecklingskurva och kanske att han växer till sig några centimeter, men Oliver Reck (målvaktstränare) är duktig på att utveckla talanger så ingenting är omöjligt för Mohamed.

Trots att han numera spelar i det tyska U-19 landslaget så finns det fotfarande chans för honom att spela i det marockanska A-landslaget. Marocko tog med honom till ett träningsläger så Mohamed kunde träna med de marockanska A-landslagsmännen som värmer upp inför OS, men han har ännu inte bestämt sig vilket landslag han vill representera. Enligt FIFAs regler får en spelare som, trots att han spelat på ungdomslandslagsnivå för ett land, representera ett annat land på A-landslagsnviå. Amsif besöker Marocko en gång per år och följer marockansk fotboll så bra han kan, men det finns ju en anledning till att han valde de tyska ungdomslandslagen. Vi får se i framtiden om han dels utvecklas så mycket att han kan bli målvakt för något av landslagen, och isåfall vilket han väljer.

Wie dem auch sei, Frau Fellows a.k.a. Mrs John K. Samson präsentierte sich an Gitarre und Keyboard und zog die gut 30 Zuschauer in ihren Bann. Ein erstes winziges Ausrufezeichen, das auf einen entspannten Abend hindeutete. Fellows unterhielt mit ihren folkigen Songs aus unterschiedlichen Alben sehr gut und bat zu einem Song auch den Drummer der Weakerthans auf die Bühne. Ganz ohne Unterstützung geht es dann halt doch nicht.

Ihr folgte, man könnte sagen, der Jens Lehmann des Grand Hotel van Cleef, Felix Gebhard. Neuerdings hat er sein Musikprojekt Home of The Lame zu einer Band formiert, dieses Mal verzichtete er aber auf seine Kollegen und präsentierte seine Songs alleine an der Akustikgitarre. Was bei den alten Liedern als Stärke ausgelegt werden kann, nämlich dass sie kaum mehr brauchen als Stimme und Gitarre, war gleichzeitig auch Schwäche der neuen Songs. Man merkt einfach, dass sie für eine Band geschrieben sind und entsprechende Instrumentierung voraussetzen. War aber alles nicht schlimm, Gebhard machte durch seine Art vieles wett und lieferte auch hinterher am Merchstand wieder einmal den Beweis dafür, dass er sich nicht nur in den Dienst seiner Freunde stellen kann sondern auch, dass er ein unheimlich freundlicher und liebenswürdiger Zeitgenosse ist.

Nachdem das Zakk schließlich dann doch noch gut gefüllt war, konnte es mit den Weakerthans weitergehen. Die vier respektive mit Frau Samson fünf Musiker fügten Lieder ihrer drei letzten Alben nahtlos zusammen, wobei die Höhepunkte sicherlich Aside, Left and leaving und die beiden Katzensongs waren. Vor allem letztere sind ja eigentlich so ein Querschnitt durch das Schaffen der Weakerthans. Sie sind ruhig bzw rockig und bieten textlich genau die richtige Mischung aus "aww" und "yeah", der die Weakerthans charakterisiert. Je länger das Konzert dauerte, desto euphorischer wurden die Lieder aufgenommen, am Ende sangen wohl alle textsicheren Zuschauer mit geschlossenen Augen mit. Gänsehaut garantierte Without mythologies, ein Lächeln zauberte One great city! auf die Gesichter des Publikums, gefreut wurde sich über Confessions of a futon-revolutionist, ein Lied aus dem zu Unrecht leider missachteten Debütalbum Fallow. Die Weakerthans zeigten sich spielfreudig wie eh und je, große Rockerposen dürften nicht fehlen, sind bei ihnen aber eher charmant als lächerlich. Sie dürfen das eben. Nach zwei Zugaben und dem abschließenden Pamphleteer, das Felix Gebhard sich aus der Ferne anschaute, ging aber auch dieser Abend zuende. Nicht ohne eine Menge leuchtender Augen zurückzulassen und den Wunsch, dasselbe noch mal anzuhören. Konzerte von Lieblingsbands sollten nicht nach 90 Minuten vorbei sein. Gott sei Dank hallen sie aber noch lange im Kopf nach, was nicht nur an dem obligatorischen Pfeifton im Ohr liegt.

Auch er hat immer Drang zur Veränderung. Ist oftmals rastlos und stets auf Achse.

Seit diesen langen Jahren stehe ich ihm als Medienberater zur Seite. Ich entwickel seine Medienstrategien und setze die Richtlinien für jegliche Gestaltungen für Print und Web. Außerdem halte ich den Kontakt zu seinen Pressepartnern und sorge für die richtige Publikation per Zeitungsartikeln, Kalenderveröffentlichungen oder Gewinnspielen jeglicher Art. Wir ergänzen uns dabei sehr gut - zwar auch manchmal mit gegenteiliger Meinung, die man durchaus durch-diskutieren kann, aber das gehört wohl dazu. Es ist eine der wenigen Freundschaften, die auch aufgrund riesigem Vertrauens ebenso im Geschäftlichen funktioniert. Auf Jahre.

Zum 02. August starten wir in ein neues Kapitel: Die neue Blackmusic-Partyreihe "Hot Chocolate" mit dem dazugehörigen, von mir erfundenen Slogan "A Blackmusic Retrospection" läuft an und klaut unsere letzten freien Ressourcen für die Vorbereitungen.

Bei der Mediengestaltung haben wir auch meinen Freund Denis Ignatov, Jungtalent der Fotografie und MACHER meiner neuen Fotos, ins Boot geholt, um unser "Produkt" auch fotografisch ins Rechte Licht zu rücken. Das Ergebnis ist sehr funky & sexy geworden, mit einem leichten Tick von Selbstironie - genau unser Ding.
