Okay, so this question didn't come through the mailbag, but via the comments section of a recent post. Upon finding myself answering in a little too much detail for just a comment, however, I decided to make it a post.

Inkform asked the c@juggler the following question:

Do you think anyone playing 3.5 or below would feel cheated (or feel less of a player/DM) because of the new rules in the 4th ed?

Erm . . . I wouldn't.

While 4e utilizes elements that have gone before, it really is almost a whole new beast.

The mechanics are about as clean and crisp as you can get given some of the game's basic premises.

And while I still stand by my comment in an earlier post that no long-time DM worth his salt really needs to buy a new DMG (especially now that magic items are in the PHB) the 4e Dungeon Master's Guide is bloody brilliant when it comes to making things easy for a novice DM.

They have a simple table in there where the DM has only to know the level and numbers of characters running in his game to come up with quick, dirty, realistic, and challenging encounters.

Seriously, you plug those 2 numbers in - number of players and their level - and it tells you how much XP worth of monsters you can throw at them and lays out options for mixing and matching the beasties on the fly and even for making the encounters easier or harder just to spice things up a bit.

My only real glitch with the current incarnation of the game is that they force-feed readers the notion that only the proper number and combination of characters can have a fulfilling experience. That and the fact that the bulk of the attention that went into designing the game focuses on combat.

I remember the bare bones rules of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons before there ever was even a 2nd edition, when I played a good deal of games with just a DM or a DM and one other player - and we always had a blast. Specific character classes? Bah. I lovingly referred to my barbarian's magic war hammer as my "lock-pick+1" (our party did have a thief along, but he was better at picking pockets and getting caught snogging with betrothed princesses)

When I played with a group, nobody ever played a cleric unless we had someone new at the table and we suckered him into it. And yet we all survived, thrived, and had fun.

4e has it's moments, and I love it for the crunchy bits alone, but they do get a bit heavy handed and preachy in pushing their current agenda. Don't get me wrong, teaching a new generation to play smart is great, but they are trying a little toooo hard to fit the MMO mold.

Example: One of their new character classes - the Warlord.

Picture a Bard. With no music. No neat knowledge skills. No magic. No thief skills. But he can still grant minor bonuses to his friends.

Now wrap him in chain mail and give him fair access to heavy-damage melee weapons and you have the Warlord. Nobody is going to play this sucker. He exists only because MMO's have Buff characters so D&D must have a Buff character.

But actual role playing is much more personal than that and I think the same way people got sick of the basic cleric (supplements in 2nd ed and core rules in 3.x fixed this problem) because he was really no fun to play because his focus was on the party rather than on himself.

So, back to your question.

Some people may feel cheated for buying the books. With the release of each new edition there is a subset of people who groan about a company that is just out to make a buck. Sure they are. But each new edition also brings in new interest and new players, so I think it's a fair trade off as it keeps the game alive.

As to feeling less of a player/DM - no, if you have managed to run with the 3.x grappling rules you should consider yourself a demigod. A demigod who can rest now because they have finally fixed that calculus-heavy glitch.

It is what it is, man.

That is to say, it is what you put into it.

The books are combat focused and a little domineering when it comes to party structure. But even a moderately experienced DM knows where that kind of *advice* can be shoved.

Once you get to the table it's your game. Yours and your players to invent, reinvent, and do as you will.

Dungeon party
A dungeon party is a group of players who are together in a party to accomplish a goal in a dungeon.
There are different reasons to party
- similar level characters party to gain experience, items, etc.

- high levels party with lower levels to help with quests, usually boss quests

- fun - sometimes you party in dungeons for fun and do crazy stuff

The Dungeon Party
Parties can consist of any player classes of any levels of any number but usually standards exist for xp/jp/leveling type parties. I will ignore high level pets because they are NOT standard.
the usual 8 player party
- 8 is max, max damage, max killing speed if all players are decent
the quad
- 4 players together as a quad to get good xp at decent spots that spawn a limited number of mobz but fast (3 mob areas in pp etc)
- 3 players as a trio - see above
- 2 players as a duo - see above - usually involve good pets

Party abbreviations
see the abreviation post for more
dp = dungeon party
lf = look for
dplf = dungeon party look for
lfdp = looking for dungeon party
mobz = your enemies, monsters, mobs
dd = damage dealer
tank = someone with high health who can take most of the brunt of the mobz anger
puller = someone who brings mobz to the party to be killed
ss = stamina saver (double xp/jp)

Party class roles
1. the healers
- cleric type character as primary healer - note that 2 healers is not always needed...
- kahuna types as a secondary healer for the most part
- the breeder types - heal pets
2. the buffers
- the kahuna type - buffs are great for parties and used to be standard but now that the rebirths have plagued the servers kahuna types are not always available
- the cleric type - well since clerics are standard for parties in my mind, so are their buffs. (wisdom and intelligence are not useless)
- the dark magician type - buffs are great but not essential
- the battle summoner - at high levels the auras make pets stronger - not essential but helpful at high levels
- soul breeder - buffs for pets are nice but not essential
3. the tank
- at lower levels I still think a good holy warrior is the true tank but at higher levels usually these can tank
- holy warrior / knight / soldier - the true tanks - essential at low levels
- the evoker - high damade + hp = decent tank
- the assasin - can tank at higher levels
- the champion - can tank at higher levels
4. the damage dealer - dd
- i think any class can be a dd but if i want a true dd I look for warrior class
- warriors are not essential so any class can be put here
5. the puller
- any class can pull
- be nice and if you are not healing or dual summoning or tanking, pull
- any class can cast cancel to pull, use low level chips, or use an r1 bow
- a puller class type (bow class) is not essential because any one should pull

The Must Have members:
1. cleric type as primary healer
2. someone to tank, preferably a holy warrior/knight/soldier unless r4+
3. someone to pull - does not matter who - just not a healer or dual summoner
4. everything else can be filled as per your desires

Party basics
- be patient, parties fill
- be nice and if you cannot stay an hour and people are likely to use SS say so before the party gets going
- if you are in a party and find you have to go before SS is up and you have a little bit of time, shout for a replacement and tell your party
- if you will need to go away from the PC a lot during the party, tell them or DON'T PARTY that time
- if you have to go afk for a short time tell the party and if they ask you to log, be nice and do it
- bring your own supplies - pots, scrolls, ss, wind pots
- wait for all party members to be present to run into dungeon together unless someone says do not wait - dungeons are dangerous without buffs
- pay attention in the party - if you would rather watch a movie then farm and watch, do not party
- bring chips - everyone gets lak - bring the chips people agree on. if you normally use soul, bring force or luna anyway - everyone should donate ~ 100 chips per hour
- ANYONE can pull - even a cleric type can pull if you have more than one. even a tank type can pull if u have more than one. pet classes who are dual summoning should not be made to pull. the lowest lvl dd could pull if he does the least damage
- Do not use Fear or Head Breaker unless absolutely essential. i.e. save the healer.
- Do not use pet skills on a boss, this often has the effect of taking agro from the tank and creating chaos.
- Use luna chips on boss mobs, this gives everyone the chance to do maximum damage.
- Before using/leveling a low level pet in a dp, ask if other members of the party are ok with it.
- If you die in a dp, don't abuse the healer, they are usually doing the best they can. Remember, if they don't heal and other members of the party die, they will usually die too.
- Watch the healers mana, scroll when needed, don't wait to be asked.
- Assassins generally make the better boss pullers, the hide skill allows them to lose the adds easily while the tank takes the boss. It is quicker to hide rather than log.
- Sometimes chippers need help, if you're attacking a mob and it's not chipped, chip it if you have the chips.

Remember these are more generalizations about what usually is the case. i know cms can tank, it just doesnt usually happen.

The only long term downfall in the industry I noticed was right after 9/11.  Well, at least for escorts.  In terms of professional dungeons, their business increased.  My thoughts are escorts are a luxury.  However, domination is a necessity for many.  Many people in positions of authority enjoy professional dungeons.  For them, ecstasy is releasing control to someone else.  The dungeon I worked in got a huge boost in revenue from police, military, & politicians who were stressed from the terrorist attacks.  They NEEDED to go to the dungeon, in order to find relief.

MAsT: Washington exists as a support group for men, gay, straight or bisexual, involved in, or interested in, the Master/slave lifestyle. 

It is an opportunity and forum for like-minded men to come together for discussion of issues that concern Masters and slaves, to share ideas and gain/share knowledge of the Master/slave lifestyle.  You do not have to own a slave or have a Master in order to attend our meetings.

Don't worry, there are more than 3,000 hotel rooms in the area, you won't have to sleep in your car. But the best deals are going fast, so I suggest you register now and get a room booked as soon as you can to save as much $$$ as possible!

What's New in 2008?

 First of all, we're expanding. The response to TFW 07 was overwhelmingly positive, so we're expanding the event to 60,000SF total. This year we expect 800-1,200 people to attend from all over the US and Canada, and we want to be prepared.

This also gives us room to put ALL OF OUR CLASSES IN INDIVIDUAL CLASSROOMS, so we don't have the problems with noise we had last year. We are also expanding the social areas to allow more places to hang out after playtime.

Other things we are doing:

• Expanding the cafe hours - so you will have more chances to catch a hot bite or two

• More Meet and Greets and social events

• More artists and performers and an expanded art gallery

• More classes in Scene related art

• Fewer playspace rules

• More training for DMs and Safety staff

• Expanded programs in transgender issues and women's issues

• Night time pony play

• 301 and 401 classes for the more experienced people

• Both unisex and gender-specific restrooms this year, choose what makes you most comfortable.

What is Floating World, anyway?

 It was, is, an experiment - Create a nonprofit, all volunteer community event for the entire ALT/BDSM/Fetish scene. Gays, Hets, SMers, roleplayers, ponies, rubber and latex fetishists, crossdressers - the works. How to you get all those diverse groups to work and play together???

And more important, why???

The why was easy - all of these groups have something to offer the others - experience, expertise, perspective. You can't grow unless you find new points of view, new ideas -
The how was harder - so we adopted the 17th century Japanese idea of Ukiyo - "the Floating World", a place with its own rules of conduct based on respect, not convention. To our surprise as much as everyone else's - it worked! People played, talked, learned and went home better than when they came.

After the event, everyone asked only one question - When are you doing this again?!!!

So, What happens at Floating World?

Classes and workshops with the world's most skilled presenters, parties and festivities, meet and greet parties so you can make friends and new relationships, a marketplace with tons of the most exotic and exciting fetish and bondage gear, the Northeast's largest playspace with dungeon gear like you've never seen and of course, people - people from every community to meet and learn from.

We've booked the largest convention facility in Central New Jersey, just seconds from the NJ Turnpike and the GS Parkway and less than an hour from NYC and Philly by car or by train. We have an excellent hotel and several backups to insure you more than 3,000 rooms to choose from and continuous shuttle service for those who don't want to drive. If you do drive, there are thousands of FREE parking spaces on site.

We've booked over 40,00 SF of playspace plus 20,000 SF for classrooms and workshops - making this the largest event of its kind in the NorthEast.

So, its it Gay, Straight or what?

Floating World is open to anyone in the alt community - no matter what your interest or orientation(s). Yes, I know - everybody says the gays don't get along with straights, Fetish doesn't get along with S&M etc - Bull. True, not everyone at the event will be into what you're into, but I guarantee you can learn from them and make friends with them. And yes, it's a great place to meet potential partners, too!

With so many groups involved, who runs the event?

The event is run by volunteers from all the participating groups with the legal work, insurance and organization being handled by Alternative Educational Events, Inc. - a nonprofit we created just for this event. Nobody gets paid, everybody donates their time for the sake of the community.

Can I pay at the door this year?

Sorry, no- the way we run the event is that all registration stops two weeks before the event - this makes registration much quicker and puts us in a better legal position. Besides, if we know how many people are attending we can make sure we have all the staff and equipment we need in advance!

Where do the profits go?

By law we can't spend them and we have no group to fund, so if we have money left over it goes into the event in the form of extra presenters, entertainers and equipment. The more people attend, the better the event gets! If there's any left over, it goes to next year's event or government recognized charities selected by the participating groups.

So the bottom line is, this event is not about the egos, the money, the prestige or the promotion. It's about learning, living and loving.

What are you doing for the next 24 years?

Remember that evil I told you about?  Yeh. Well, apparently it's breeding in other countries (not just the good 'ol US of 'A)!  All this went down in Austria and was covered on BBC News and other outlets back in April 2008 - Josef Frtizl held his then 15 year daughter in a man made dungeon for (get this) 24 years!  That's right, 24 years away from daylight and with limited oxygen.  Over 24 years "Elisabeth" would be subjected to torture and incest by her "father" Josef Fritzl.  Fritzl reportedly built the elaborate, highly secret dungeon because Elisabeth had became unmanageable due to the emotional changes brought on by puberty.  Crazy enough for ya yet? This tiny torture chamber was equipped with a bathroom, kitchen area, and sound-proof walls.  Josef would visit Elisabeth every night, bringing her gifts of torture and incest, which resulted in the birth of numerous children.  One of the babies would die in the basement after birth.  Fritzl lead everyone to believe that Elisabeth has ran away from home -- he even went as far to place a baby on his own front porch - with a note attached "take care of the baby" -Elisabeth" -- Frtizl's wife was unaware of any of the torture, she was even unaware of the secret cellar/torture chamber.  Life went on as usual above the hidden basement. Frtizl even allowed a couple of his own children to live basically normal lives -- "upstairs" -- nobody knew his secret.  There is so much to this story I can only summarize, just know that this is one sick person.  Elisabeth would eventually be set free - and make an attempt at a better life.  The emotional trauma of being confined for 24 years (away from sunlight) and hardly able to stand-up (given the dimensions of the space) is pretty inconceivable.  There are videos on youtube that show the dungeon and give more background on this creepy story.  Elisabeth is now 42 and Josef Fritzl is facing some serious jail-time and causing people all over the world to go "What the *uck?"

More on the cellar

The Fritzl property in Amstetten consists of a building dating from around 1890 and a newer building, which was added after 1978, when Fritzl applied for a building permit for an "extension with basement". In 1983, building inspectors visited the site and verified that the new extension had been built according to the dimensions specified on the building permit. Unknown to them, however, Fritzl had illegally created additional room by excavating space for a much larger basement and concealed it by erecting walls. Around 1981 or 1982, according to his statement^[2], he started to turn this hidden cellar into a prison cell and installed a washbasin, a toilet, a bed, a hot plate and a refrigerator. In 1993, he added more space by creating a passageway to a pre-existing basement area under the old part of the property, which nobody knew of apart from him.

The concealed cellar was soundproofed and consisted of a 5 m (5.5 yd) long corridor, a storage area, and three small open cells, connected by narrow passageways: a basic cooking area and bathroom facilities, followed by two sleeping areas, which were equipped with two beds each. It covered an area of approximately 55 m² (600 sq ft). The ceilings were no more than 1.70 m (5.6 ft) high.

The hidden cellar had two access points: a hinged door that weighed 500 kg (1,100 lb) which is thought to have become unusable over the years because of its weight, and a metal door, reinforced with concrete and on steel rails that weighed 300 kg (650 lb) and measured 1 m (3.3 ft) high and 60 cm (2 ft) wide. It was located behind a shelf in Fritzl's basement workshop, protected by an electronic code known only to Fritzl, which he entered using a remote control unit. In order to reach this door, five locking basement rooms had to be crossed. To get to the area where Elisabeth and her children were held, eight doors in total would need to be unlocked, of which two doors were additionally secured by electronic locking devices.

One last thing, Josef Fritzl when asked about why he did it, responded with "I always knew what I was doing was wrong" -- enough said.

This dungeon will be the first real test for us as a group because any mistake here may cause the group to wipe. The dungeon must be cleared with care, since fleeing humanoids can easily pull lots of other mob groups.

So maybe we get a chance to test Padme's wipe prevention ability. ;-)

This npc is traped in a cage behind the skeleton boss inside the dungeon. We can turn it in at the quest giver, who will give us the followup [37] Extinguishing the Idol. Then he will vanish and leave a burning idol. Clicking on this idol will complete the quest and make is a nice ring richer.

[42] Bring the End from Andrew Brownell in Undercity.

Get the skull of the last boss in the dungeon.

[33] Hearts of Zeal  From Master Apothecary Faranell in Undercity, this is the follow up of [30] Going, Going, Guano!

We need 20 hearts of any Scarlet NPC. I've mentioned this one at the Prep of SM Graveyard to, but we need to be lvl 30 to get this one and it can be done in any part of Scarlet Monastery... So here it is again.

[36] Test of Lore From Parqual Fintallas in Undercity.

The quest itself is very easy. We have to pick up a book from the library. The hard part here is the long chain of pre-requisite quest we have to pick up. See the 'Todo's before...' below for more information. When we finaly turn this quest back in, we have to answer a question. The answer to the question is: "Ner'zhul" (Option 3). Then we have to turn in the last quest in Thousand Needles to get our reward.

[38] Compendium of the Fallen From Sage Truthseeker in Thunder Bluff.

We have to pick up a book in the last part of the dungeon.

[42] Into the Scarlet Monastery Form Varimathras in Undercity.

This quest is the boss killing quest. We need to kill bosses in al parts of the Scarlet Monastery. (Library, Armory and Cathedral). After killing the boss in the Library part we have to pick up the Scarlet key behind him. We need this key to get attuned for the Armory and Cathedral parts.

TODO's before entering the dungeon

First we can pick up the quest [38] Compendium of the Fallen  in Thunder Bluff. Second step is to get de questchain done for [36] Test of Lore. Here it is:

1. Pickup [26] Test of Faith from Dorn Plainstalker in Thousand Needles
2. DON'T jump yet... if we do we'll die. Instead, turn around and find the planks slightly behind us and to the left. From there we jump.....   it realy is a test of faith. ;)  Almost as soon as we have JUMPED off the edge, we'll see "Quest Completed". About 75 percent of the way down we'll be teleported back where the guy will reward us.
3. Now we can get the follow up [30] Test of Endurance.
4. Get to 27,49 and kill Grenka, easy as hell. Not realy a test of endurance.
5. Turn the quest back in and get [30] Test of Strength and kill Rok'Alim allong the south side of Thousand Needles (between 11,22 and 26,42)
6. The followup [30] Test of Lore brings us to Braug Dimspirit in Stonetalon Mountains (76,74). Here we have to pick up a book in his cave, answer a question (Answer is Neltharion option 2)
7. Now we have to go to Undercity and talk to Parqual Fintallas who will give us the dungeon quest [36] Test of Lore

Now that we are in Undercity we can pick up the other 1or 2 quests.
