Euer Ryk

So am making a website using Dreamweaver cs3. Well I was yesterday until it decided to do something strange that I cant really explain. As you do.. you make it. Looks great, Everything works, Your really happy with yourself. So I thought right, Am finished, Al upload it now. So I uploaded it. took about 30 seconds. But, When I go to view it there are the background images missing on some of my tables. They are there in Dreamweaver but not on the webpage. So I thought to myself, What could be wrong with it. The files can't be missing because I am using them on other pages and they work. I thought maybe the coding is wrong. so I do the page again and re upload it. Still got the same problem. So I thought (once again) that something might be happening when I am uploading it. So I preview it in my browser straight from Dreamweaver. Still got the problem.

So today I have started fresh and it is all going great. All my images are there. Its looking fantastic. just one slight problem now. I was hosting it on my brothers server. And now that has gone t*ts up. So I have to wait till later today now to get it on the net.

I did have another problem too. I wanted to make my site in 2 columns on some pages. so I thought. al make a table with 2 columns in it. All going well. so I thought. right I want to put these images behind things now that I had made in Photoshop. so I put some more tables in side the table on one side. going great. but then when I came to do the other side and put tables in there. when I made one of the cells larger the other side got larger too and repeated my image over and over. So ye... Now I have had to bodge it so it looks right.

That’s all for now. I have done ranting on about stuff :P

Today I thought I would do a bit of linkage on tutorials for Photoshop and Dreamweaver. Everyone seems to want them these days!

First up is TutorialStuff.com who have an amazing amount of tutorials for not only Photoshop and Dreamweaver. But Fireworks, Flash, 3DS Max, ASP, Java, PHP and amazingly Firefox and IE. Of course they have alot of Photoshop tutorials having 360! The tutorials are not in flash but do have pictures to show you what you should be doing! Worth checking out!

Next on the line is another amazing resource, MickM.com which I prefer personally over Tutorial stuff just because they have articles written better and they tend to be the more interesting things to do in your free time! Again tutorials are not in flash! Having around 150 tutorials though this website is not to be dismissed!

Lastly, the big daddy of them all! Tutorialized! This website has tutorials for more things than I can count let alone write down! Ranging from graphics programs like Photoshop and the GIMP, to Flash and Maya, to web design tutorials of CSS, PHP, ASP.. etc. etc. Heck these guys have tutorials in MySQL, C++, Linux and Windows! Alot of their tutorials are in flash, and other ones are graphic based!

That is it for today guys! If anyone uses any other Tutorial website let me know!

mastering-css-dreamweaver-cs3
Adobe Dreamweaver (DW) is the leading web authoring tool on the market

[caption id="attachment_23" align="aligncenter" width="160" caption="mastering-css-dreamweaver-cs3"][/caption]

Adobe Dreamweaver (DW) is the leading web authoring tool on the market; Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is the recommended method of separating presentation from content to make site upkeep simpler and faster, as well as friendlier to search engines. Yet it’s a common misconception that it’s tough to use Dreamweaver to build accessible, standards-compliant page layouts using CSS. We’re here to show you how easy it really is. Who are we? Greg is the Group Manager, Creative Solutions Evangelism at Adobe and has been involved with Dreamweaver since version two. He demos and teaches it weekly, including its CSS capabilities. Stephanie codes CSS for a living as a consultant and trains corporate web departments in CSS techniques, best practices and web standards. She’s the co-lead of the Adobe Task Force for WaSP (formerly the Dreamweaver Task Force) and wrote the CSS layouts in Dreamweaver CS3 under contract from Adobe. We wrote this book because we felt our combined knowledge about Dreamweaver and CSS could help you, our reader, grasp these tools in combination—the way we use them every day. And we wanted the opportunity to really discuss the CSS layouts contained in Dreamweaver CS3, showing you how to use, extend and really put them to work.

We wrote the book with a fairly specifi c reader in mind. We explain each concept on fi rst encounter, so you don’t need to have extensive knowledge of either Dreamweaver or CSS, but we do expect that you have at least a little familiarity with both. We’re also assuming you have some rudimentary working knowledge of (X)HTML. On the other hand, if you’re a power user of either Dreamweaver or CSS, this book will hopefully expose you to that “other” side and open your mind to some new workfl ow possibilities. Stephanie even learned some new tips as she edited Greg’s writing, and if pressed, Greg will admit he learned some new tricks with CSS. In the pages of this book, you’ll hopefully have several “gee, I wish I’d
known that on my last project” moments.

Ever since Adobe released their Spry Framework for AJAX I’ve been a fan, most especially once

Ever since Adobe released their Spry Framework for AJAX I've been a fan, most especially once they integrated it into Dreamweaver CS3. It's currently at 1.6.1, the last point release making adjustments for working with Adobe's new AIR platform. Whilst Spry's integration within Dreamweaver was a welcome one, it wish they'd spent more time on this platform and make far more Spry widgets available for use than presently exists. Today I went on the scrounge for a simple to use calendar widget, found it pretty quickly, and have already adapted it slightly to navigate the years in an easier fashion than is presently possible.

It's been a long while now since the Adobe Spry team have made any noise about their next release, and what we might expect from it. I'm really hoping that they will provide their next update as a patch for CS3, as they did with the last release, but making it do a little more than before. It would be nice if we could:

create a lightbox photo gallery via dialogs - select the files and it takes care of the rest (including producing thumbnails)

add additional widgets to CS3 such as slider bars and sliding panels that can be programmed to automatically shuffle through (I had to write some code to make them do this for me; not eloquent, but it works as I needed)

I'd kill to see a "Repair my Spry code". How many times have you done some editing in the GUI side of things and lost your spry activation code that appears at the end. Me, lots! Very annoying. Would be nice if I could go to a Spry menu in CS3 and say fix it please.

I really must get around to looking at jQuery. I have briefly looked at it, but I seriously need to invest some time in investigating its possibilities (albeit me having to code it all by hand). I was visiting Dave Shea's Bright Creative website the other day, apparently he's made use of jQuery to redesign his site and add functionality. Nice site by the way Dave! Perhaps some weekend reading.

I finally got my website, ellifolks.com, up and working. It's here, if you would like to take a look. I designed the site in Dreamweaver. The graphics were made in Adobe Illustrator, and then were saved "for web and devices" as gifs. Graphics can be added to Dreamweaver from inside the root site folder there. I think Dreamweaver has a pretty steep learning curve, and am just starting to get the feel for it. The lynda.com videos were very helpful, as was the book Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 Hands-On Training by Garrick Chow taken from the lynda.com Dreamweaver CS3 videos.

When drawing in Illustrator, I usually use the pencil. I like that you can adjust lines that are selected by redrawing them. The old line is then automatically replaced with the new one. This is a lot faster than erasing and redrawing with a pencil and paper. It only works for new lines that are within the distance you have set in the pencil tool preferences. (Double click on pencil tool or hit "enter" on keyboard when pencil tool is active to bring up the pencil tool preferences.)

In the past few months, I’ve grabbed a hold of my client’s Email Marketing program (well

In the past few months, I've grabbed a hold of my client's Email Marketing program (well, only half a hold*) and have begun to master it. One change was to move from using established templates offered by the email provider to using custom templates that I created.

While we lost the ability for my client to edit the emails (darn, I'm heartbroken), I did gain the ability to create a branded look & feel. I also obtain a better understanding of tracking between email (HTML) and web sites, which I'd like to share with you here. Note that I'm at the beginning stages, and there may be several inaccuracies or inefficiencies. So send me a comment if things could be done better.

Specifications

Email System: Constant Contact

Web Analytics: Google Analytics

Web Authoring: Dreamweaver CS3

Creating the HTML email

I use Dreamweaver to create the email, as a copy will be online as a view option (best practice). Once I finish creating the email and tagging it up with the various tracking tags, I then copy/paste the styles and HTML code into ConstantContact.

Getting a handle on creating HTML emails that view as well as possible across various email clients and systems was a culture shock. Back are the days of using tables for layout, spacers gifs (I refuse), and font tags (actually, I use styles, ConstantContact creates font tag equivalents, using both font tags and styles), etc.

The key to the layout is to create a container table, then stack nest all tables within this container. You should keep in mind that multiple nested tables will cause problems in some email clients.

Adding the Google Analytics Attributes

With out layout, text and images in place, we now focus on tagging the hyperlinks.

First, we want to add the Google Analytics attributes to our URLs that point to our website. Google offers a tool that simplifies this process.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Google Analytics URL Builder"][/caption]

Simply enter the URL, followed by required parameters:

Campaign Source: The overall name of the item/campaign/email that your tagging.

Campaign Medium: Email

Campaign Content: A name of the element you're tagging. Note that if you have multiple links for the same thing, you want to decern in your naming at this time. Example, say this is travel related with with an itinerary name, image and a "view details" link. Each one should have an individual name here. This will help you understand what motivates your subscribers to click through.

Campaign Name: For my purposes, I simply repeat the Campaign Source.

Clicking on Generate URL provides the custom URL in the text box. Simply copy this URL and use it for the link's URL in Dreamweaver.

With all URLs in place with the Google Analytics attributes, I now move to add the Constant Contact code.

Adding the Constant Contact Markup

First, let me say that the documentation from Constant Contact is less than intuitive. I wasted several production emails to learn later that something had been coded improperly. Hopefully, this post will help. Note also that while I'm using ConstantContact, on a high level, this is similar to several other email service providers (MailerMailer, Lyris, MailChimp, etc.) that allow for custom coding.

First, the
<OpenTracking/>
tag must be in place after the
<body>
tag but before the content. Then, surrounding each hyperlink anchor
<a>
tag, the
<SimpleURLProperty>
tag is inserted.

<SimpleURLProperty name="" type="plain" href="" img="" label="" track="true">

The attributes are as follows:

name: The name of this link. I tend to use the same unique name as I did for the Google Analytics link.

type: I always use plain.

href: The entire URL (including Google Analytics attributes) goes here.

img: If the element hosting the link is an image, the URL of the image goes here.

label: If the element hosting the link is text, the actual link text goes here.

track: Value is true. This is the default, yet must be in place for tracking to be recorded.

To make this somewhat manual process a bit easier, I simply created a Dreamweaver Snippet with the
<SimpleURLProperty>
code that I can wrap around after selecting the anchor tag.

Adding the custom code to ConstantContact

Once all links I wish to track have been tagged, I double check my code to make sure it is valid.

I currently don't validate this. Here's why:

While I have the option to use either HTML or XHTML for my Custom Contact custom emails, I choose XHTML, because it affords me some additional features with Constant Contact. Custom Contact uses a custom XML Namespace for its emails;
xmlns:cctd="http://www.constantcontact.com/cctd
. Because of this, I get numerous, additional validation errors. Therefore, I use a slightly dumbed down approach. I let Constant Contact point out the errors, then use Dreamweaver to find the line number and fix the error. Common errors I've run across are self-closing tag errors, like
img
,
br
, or
hr
.

Once I feel confident that my code is clean, I start a new email in Constant Contact, select the custom email & XHTML options, then begin by first copy & pasting the CSS into the Styles panel. I then copy & paste the HTML code into the HTML panel.

I then preview to check for errors. If errors are reported, I copy/paste the code back into a new Dreamweaver file and troubleshoot. If no errors occur, I send a test message to myself, hitting three different mail clients. Once the test email is received, I click on the various links, then check back in Constant Contact to see if the clickthroughs were triggered. Only after the confirmation is the email sent. I would check Google Analytics, however, there is a long delay before they are presented.

The Resulting Metrics

The first metrics received come from Constant Contact.

The statistics provide totals on sent/opens, spam reports, opt-outs, opens, clicks and forwards. Constant Contact also shows me the number of clicks per link. So this gives me a good idea of what happened in the email environment. Note that like most email service providers, Constant Contact cannot track opens for text emails. However, if a link is clicked, it then does infer an open for that recipient.

Sent to opens gives us an idea on whether the recipient is engaged with our emails. If this number is too low, a separate, custom email might be in order for those subscribers. Bounces are caused by various issues, such as non-existent email addresses, block, vacation/out of office messages, mail box full, etc. Spam reports should be zero or very low. Otherwise, you're not doing something right. Opt-outs are a sign of not getting what the expected. Remember, you must meet the subscribers expectations with each mailing, otherwise they will opt-out. Clicks refer to the number of items clicked. This number tends to be lower than the individual numbers below, due to multiple opens by some subscribers. Forwards tell you how many messages were forwarded to other email addresses, a sign that viral marketing is alive and well.

Now let's take a look at what Google Analytics gives us.

Once logged into Google Analytics, if you select Traffic Sources > Campaigns, you can select the desired campaign, based on the Campaign Name you gave in the Google Analytics URL builder. Some basic information initially appears, such as the number of visits, pages per visit, % of new visits, time on site, etc. By filering down on the segment Ad Content, we can see how productive each link was per clickthrough.

This is a high level view of the capabilities available by tying in your email and web-based metrics programs to provide a big picture of the entire user experience.

*Client prefers, event after many attempts at persuasion, to manage recipient list manually, outside of email providers system.

I am a control freak. Type A personality. Pisces. Left-handed. Female. You get the point. Ther

I am a control freak. Type A personality. Pisces. Left-handed. Female. You get the point. There’s very little room to wiggle in my daily-budget-excel-spreadsheet, color-coordinated calendar and perfectly stacked bookshelves containing mostly last years’ musician’s atlases, DIY novels (is there even such thing?) and booking resources. So when it comes to my internet, the one that I use to spread the word and music that is CBE, I need control, I need it to be tight, and I need access to obsess over it. These mean different things to different people, and in this article, I’ll let you know what it means to me, and maybe there’s a little light to be shed in the realm of DIY Internet marketing.

On that bookshelf I mentioned before, there are scores of “how-to” books- like how to get the gig, how to publish your music, how to start a record label. In most of them, I saw a few consistent words of advice: get a good website and brand the hell outta yourself. Okay, got it. Now what??
After coming out with my first album 4 years ago, getting a friend to build me a website that I could edit, and setting up a Myspace account, I thought I was set. But when I was getting ready to release my second album last fall, the one I spend 10 times as long making, put more money into designing and was overall incredibly proud of, I wanted to raise the bar on every other front as well.

I had heard the word branding and decided it was time to brand myself. Not like a cow… like a company, thankyouverymuch. I started looking up other bands online just to see what their websites looked like. I kept a bookmark folder of these sites, with the hopes I could find a great web designer who could check them out and understand what I wanted. And that’s just what happened. After finding a few sites I really enjoyed, I contacted the bands to find out who designed them. I called 3 designers and based on availability, price, and design talent, chose Josh Webb (www.joshwebb99.com). And with a name like that, I knew I was in luck.

Josh and I spend a few months going over my basic requirements. I wanted the design to match the graphics of my new album, with the same color patterns, fonts and image treatment. For content, I made Josh a “map” which included the pages of the site I thought were necessary and what features I wanted on each. For example, part of my “map” looked like this:
1. Home
A. email signup
B. "next show" marquee and/or newest news
C. "buy cd" link
D. myspace link
2. Music
A. Music samples from both albums
B. store (from CD baby, or iTunes)
C. pictures of album covers (2)
3. Tour
A. Show schedule from Sonicbids.com
4. Photos
A. I'd like a quick-loading photo album, with the following albums:
1. Live- archive
2. Live- recent
3. On the road
4. Misc

I also let Josh know that editing the pages after the site was designed and launched was really important to me (and my controlling personalities). I didn’t want to have to depend on his schedule, or pay extra, to add some text to my “news” page, or to update my biography, and with very basic HTML skills, I didn’t want to spend days learning advanced Flash or CSS.

After a few months of back-and-forth, we got to what is now cbemusic.com. And I couldn’t be happier. Josh made an overall frame (the photos on the top and menu on the side) in Flash. The individual pages within each frame in HTML, which means I can drag them from my ftp onto my computer and edit them. I use the program Fetch to access my files and edit them in Dreamweaver, then drag the new files back to the ftp.

So now that my website was up to my par, I hired a friend who creates suped-up myspace pages. He designed my myspace page to match cbemusic.com (which matches the CD design… Cheryl “B-for-Branding” Engelhardt, at your service). I went through all of the other websites where I upload and/or promote my music: Garageband, iLike, AirSpun, PureVolume, FameCast, etc, and uploaded the same audio tracks and pictures that are featured on cbemusic.com. I went to my email-marketing program (more on this later), and had Josh do a quick design of my e-mail template to look like…. you got it…. my home page. So now when I send out an e-mail to my fans, they get a little piece of the website, which hopefully makes them want to explore the site more. My goal is to drive traffic to my website for the results of 1. obtaining a hard-core fan 2. CD sales 3. both.

After feeling totally confident that I had mastered branding, and was completely satisfied with my websites and my online image, I started to use these tools I had so carefully created.

As we all know, there is much more than meets the eye when it comes to anything technical or digital. With every web page and every email, there is a boatload of data behind it. I use key data-tracking features in my web hosting and email programs to target my market better, and to see what works and what doesn’t work in how I communicate with my listeners. Only recently, since I put out my new website in January, have I learned to really use the back end of the e-mails and web site statistics.

I have been using Constant Contact as my e-mail marketing software for a few years now, and have used their services of importing new subscriber data like e-mail, location and name, to send out e-mails about my shows, new albums, etc, to a targeted audience. For example, I send emails about New York shows only to people who live in the NY area so I don’t spam my Switzerland fans. Setting up a good target-marketing plan before sending that email is extremely important. What I am finding is there is much to be learned after that email is sent.

Constant Contact allows me to look at a ton of great statistics, like how many people and who opened my email (this helps me hone my subject-line writing skills) and which links were clicked on the most (I use this to determine how interested my fans are in reading about charity causes I’m involved with, other artists I link to, and to see how many people clicked on directions to a show, and how many people are drawn to my website, iTunes, Cdbaby and myspace links). I use all of this information, especially when creating my next email. I may have learned that 40 people clicked on my website, 5 people were interested in my environmental charity initiative and 3 people clicked on directions to my show in Bumblefoo, Maine. Okay, so maybe mentioning my charity initiatives is taking a little attention away from other, more important links, like CD sales, and that there is probably going to be a low attendance in my Maine show, so I should do some additional promotion for it, or send a more personalized email to my fans in the Maine area.

I can do the same thing with my website. Once I login to my Startlogic (my web hosting company) account, I can see my website statistics for as long as the site has been alive. I can compare the number of hits the site gets over years, months, days and even hours (huh… people check out my website during lunch more than in the evening). I can see what pages get more hits and which pages I need to drive more traffic to. I can also see how people search for and end up at my website, and what other pages are linking to me, resulting in hits for cbemusic.com. I try not to get too obsessive with these statistics because, like friend or hit counts on myspace, none of it really matters. It is helpful to translate more hits to more CD sales, so if there is any information that inspires new ways to drive traffic to the site, that’s the ticket. But spending hours analyzing the site is a waste if you could be, for example, spending the time contacting websites that link to you and seeing if they would feature your music on their site. I have to force the die-hard businessperson in me to take over the “oooh-look-at-the-pretty-graphs-with-all-the-numbers” girl. It’s useful stuff, as long as you use it.
The long of the short of it is that I try to keep my space in the world wide web as neat as my space in the world, while reacting and being pro-active in this obsessive-compulsive business I call music.

Note Pad

I’ve been asked by a client of mine to write a training course for them in using Dreamweaver C

I've been asked by a client of mine to write a training course for them in using Dreamweaver CS3, the package I recommended they use to maintain the site I developed for them. I'm up for the challenge, but in accepting this I am now stuck with the challenges of writing an entry level course that provides them with enough detail that they can begin to maintain their site, as well as serving as a resource for them when someone else in the future possibly takes over the site.

I last write a course for staff at my university in 2005, one that ended up proving highly successful, attracting a lot of staff with either an interesting developing their own website, or those now facing website maintenance duties within their area. I worked back then with out professional development team to produce a course that runs approximately 1.5 days and covered things such as copyright, issues in web development (eg get permission to deep link), image manipulation, formatting of text and tables, and the use of corporate templates to build pages. I was astounded back then when I taught the first class, training the trainer at the same time, and the class was asked to determine sites that were compliant with corporate style requirements - they came back with so many examples of non-compliance, so stoked!

As a part of that course I set them homework between classes, with homework from the second class requiring them to develop themselves a 2 web page CV that featured their photograph and one that visually represented them. Some came back looking like technicolour yawn (aka screen VOMIT!), some more expectedly were plain but achieving the requirements, and the odd one that surprised me and exceeded expectations.

Back then we had considered developing additional, higher level courses for those having completed this course, or with previous experience. That never eventuated, and within our new web direction at the university it is no longer directly relevant.

So back to this course I am developing for my client. The course to be developed with be far smaller, and certainly no homework, but still needs to leave them with sufficient skills that they can continue to maintain their site. Something that I will need to include in this course, that wasn't available back in 2005, is maintaining their sites use of Spry menus. I chose to implement these menus for their o/s like delay in closing, something traditional css only pop-up menus lack, the down side is their maintenance within the site itself, not as easily edited as say, text.

I am committed to delivering my training session on August 1st, so not long to ensure I get this done. As someone who's forever perfecting what he writes (you should see me writing an email some times) I am going to have to ensure I crack the whip should I notice myself doing so. That being said, I quite enjoy the writing challenge, I've always wanted to write a fiction novel, sci-fi based, but I just lack sufficient imagination required to produce such a piece. I've always wondered where people like J. K. Rowling manage to take their ideas, formulate them into the world of their story, building the characters to sufficient depth that the stories seemingly write themselves.

Cracking the whip now!!

I love our Shrinking Global Village! Earlier this week, I was asked to create a mock-up of a websit

I love our Shrinking Global Village! Earlier this week, I was asked to create a mock-up of a website for the "Nexus for Oil and Chemical Spill Research." The only way that it made sense to lay out the (sparse and sketchy) content was to use drop-down menus. Since I neither like nor use drop-downs, I haven't created them in years. I found a short tutorial on YouTube by ZeforceTutorials in Australia that shows quickly and succintly how to create drop-downs with Spry in CS3. The "instructor" sounds like he's about 14. I imagine him as a well-meaning, earnest LOTR fanboy. Anyway, it was exactly what I needed. Thanks Zeforce!
