I honestly never meant for Geek Buffet to end up with a whole series of posts on vampire fiction, but here I am, adding to it again. (Previous posts here, here, and here.) I picked up The Historian to take with me on my long business trip in large part because it looked interesting enough and, perhaps more importantly, it looked long, thereby cutting down on the number of individual books I would be putting in my luggage. It turned out to be a good choice, so if you're looking for summer travel reading as well, read on.

I mentioned before that most of my vampire fiction reading has ended up being at an interesting intersection of vampire and detective. The Historian doesn't quite fit that model, although the story definitely provides enough mystery and suspense for the reader to make you have to know how it ends. (Or at least it did me.) The title, interestingly enough, could apply to any number of the characters in the book: the narrator, her father, or her father's advisor. Truly, there are three stories going on in the book, from each of these historians' perspectives, creating a very layered effect as the story travels back in time through three generations of characters and then forward again, (which at least one person I know found off-putting enough that she didn't get past the first couple of chapters, but really, you should keep going.)

The stories are all really the same story, of course, and everything converges nicely at the end. The premise is this: The narrator begins the book by saying that she wishes to present the story of how her family became so involved in, and later known for, the search for Vlad Tepes, aka Dracula. She begins at the beginning of her own journey, when she was still in high school and discovered a strange book in her father's library, blank except for a woodcut illustration covering the two pages in the exact center of the book depicting a dragon and the word "Drakula." It is also accompanied by a bunch of very old letters addressed to "My dear and unfortunate successor." Her curiosity piqued, she finally asks her father about them.

Thus her father begins telling her the drawn-out tale of how he met her late mother, meaning that his story starts when he was a history student studying for his doctorate. He found the strange book on his study carrel and took it to his advisor. The advisor had also found a book in his own youth, and ends up bequeathing the notes of all of his subsequent research into it to the narrator's father. The advisor disappears from his office that very night, though, leaving behind a small pool of blood and nothing else.

The narrator's father reads all the advisor's letters about his research and discovers that the legend of Dracula may be much more real than previously suspected. In the library he meets a young woman who also appears to have been checking into Dracula, which seems like an entirely too-remarkable coincidence, given all the things that have begun happening in his recent life. She claims to be the illegitimate daughter of the missing advisor, born in Eastern Europe after he had interviewed her mother extensively about Vlad's history in the region, (and incidentally fallen in love with her, but then apparently abandoned her.) After growing up, the woman decided to outdo her absent father by publishing even better Dracula research than his, in order to catch his attention. She joins the search for the advisor, which turns into a search for Dracula as the evidence mounts that Dracula is still alive and responsible for the advisor's disappearance.

Their search takes them to Turkey, then to Hungaria and Romania, still at the time part of the Eastern Bloc. They discover huge amounts of historical evidence and lore about Dracula, and run into several other recipients of the mysterious dragon books who help them out along the way. The amount of historical detail is amazing, as is the incredible immediate relevance it takes on in the context of the search, 500 years removed.

I have to stop before I give too much away, but from the advisor's storyline we move back out to the father's story and the mystery surrounding the narrator's mother, then to the narrator's continued recounting of her teenage involvement in the search for Dracula, and then, at the end, to the narrator's present life.

This book, in contrast to the ones discussed on Geek Buffet earlier, takes a much more traditional black-and-white view of vampires. This is not unexpected, given that it deals directly with the Dracula myth. Vampires are not redeemable creatures in this world, and Dracula is particularly evil, but in a interestingly three-dimensional way. Tracking his life through history reveals him as a much more realistic political figure of the time, and delves into the historical antagonism between the early Christian and Muslim worlds. Dracula was part of the Christian world and is revealed to have an order of monks dedicated to his preservation and patronage. He now appears to take a particular interest in historians and librarians. He is behind the appearance of the strange dragon books on chosen individuals' desks, but his motivations, when revealed, are not quite what one expects.

It's a darker book, but not gory, and not particularly horrific. I wasn't quite sure how to categorize it when adding it to my Goodreads list. It's certainly fiction, and deals a great deal with history, but is it also historical fiction? Is it fantasy? It's not really horror, nor is it really a thriller, though it might be called a tale of suspense. Read it and tell me what you think.

Otro día os contaré House of Frankenstein.

My hearing has just about recovered from the aural assault that was Birmingham’s Supersonic fe

My hearing has just about recovered from the aural assault that was Birmingham's Supersonic festival in the Custard Factory, curated by the wonderful ladies of Capsule and ably headlined by Battles and Harmonia. I'm not going to do a round-up of everything I saw, as we'll be sticking one of those on 4Talent this week, but I just wanted to post now about something that absolutely blew me away. It wasn't even a band, funnily enough, but the screening of 1922 silent film Nosferatu with a live soundtrack.

Nosferatu is a powerful argument in favour of unofficial cover versions. It is, essentially, a rip-off of Bram Stoker's Dracula novel, with superficial changes rarely running deeper than a bit of substitute nomenclature - a Count Orlock in lieu of Count Dracula here, a Hutter replacing Harker there - it's very much the same story, slightly streamlined and relocated to plague-sticken Germany. Bram Stoker's relatives spotted this sleight-of-script at the time and hot-footed it to their lawyers, forcing Prahna Films, for whom Nosferatu was their debut film, to file for bankruptcy and shut up shop, never to film again.

A shame, and it's especially lucky that the legal team's quest to destroy every print failed. This classic made my Supersonic festival. If I wanted to be pretentious about things for a moment - and why wouldn't I? - I'd make a case for Nosferatu bearing a similar relation to other versions of the vampire myth (Stoker's novel, Christopher Lee's portrayal, Anne Rice, the execrable Ford Coppola epic) as Supersonic does to other more mainstream festivals. Bear with me...

Nosferatu...
... is loved by a smaller but more committed audience
... is aesthetically sensitive without encouraging aesthetes
... burrows its way under your skin and stays there
... adores the unheimlich
... requires patience at times
... incorporates elements of the absurd to humourous yet disturbing effect
... mingles the unintentionally camp with the seriously creepy
... will at times leave you unsure whether to laugh or gasp, but even as you walk away, you're aware you've witnessed something rather wonderful and definitely different.

You can probably infer the flipside: more mainstream festivals and vampire myths are a little slicker, concerned with seduction and appearance, dangling a membership to a supposedly exclusive club you're not so sure you want to be joining. I've nothing against that either, as I nurture something of a taste for a dash of manufactured pop in my musical cocktail (as anyone who's my friend on Last.Fm may know), but it's absolutely crucial to have both.

I'd seen Nosferatu before, a long time ago, on a small screen, and without live music, and honestly, this was in effect a different film. Congratulatory caskets of unconsecrated earth go to Grandmaster Gareth (Misty's Big Adventure) and Matt Eaton (Pram) for their work on the stunning score. Max Schreck would be proud of you.

(Addendum - while I'm on the subject, there's some other vampire-focused ramblings of mine over on wonderful website Den Of Geek reviewing Dracula's Daughter)

Iconic, intriguing, irritating, haunting - Bela Lugosi (born on now Romanian territory - Lugoj) was cursed to play the role of Dracula all his life. Unable to detach his image from that of a monster he slowly started to embrace it. This is why we find him as an old man playing Dracula sketches and as a final legacy to horror movies, playing in Ed Wood's movies, characters that are beyond pathetic - to the point that you hang them on your wall.

I started reading The Historian at the end of June and finished it up late this evening. When I began reading this book I had no idea it was about vampires. If I had, I am not certain I would have cracked open this book. However, once I got into the story written by Ms. Kostova I could not put this book down. I really liked the tone and pace of her writing. I also enjoyed the way that the author bounced about from the present, to the adventures of Professor Rossi and then to the latter journey of Paul and Elena. The chapter lengths were also varied, which I liked, and they ranged from a few pages documenting long ago written post cards to pages upon pages that described their hunt for Vlad Tepes' resting place.

One thing that bothered me was the lack of depth in some of the characters. Turgut was interesting but almost seemed stereotyped from what a Turkish character should be. Hugh James drifted into the book for only a few pages but his background and the role he played in the hunt for Dracula was not fully explained. I also did not like Ms. Kostova's decision not to reveal some of the characters first names (the narrator) or surnames (Paul for example. As a result of this decision I felt like aspects of the main characters self remained hidden.

Another criticism I have was the way in which Dracula was "killed". After 600 pages of intrigue he is confronted and defeated in a little over a page. The description of the event lacked depth and in the next pages the narrator, her estranged mother, father and Barley are sitting in a hotel, drinking cocktails and quickly moving past the shock of overcoming the world's most famous undead creature. I know it is fiction, but it almost seemed like the author was tired of writing by this point and was looking for a way to tie things up.

The above scene felt cheesy to me, but I would have been fine with book ending with that scene since it was the happily ever after approach. Instead of leaving well enough alone, Ms. Kostova kept writing to set herself up for a sequel. While on a trip after her parents have died (one naturally, one by a land mine), the unnamed narrator finds one of the special book and which implies that Dracula is still on the prowl.

I was warned by my friend who read the book before me that I would not be happy with the end of the book and she was right as it did not sit well with me. Despite its shortcomings The Historian was an enjoyable read but I am unsure I would be tempted to read the sequel (if in fact one is ever written).

When SSS chief Corazon de la Paz resigned, people and media have started speculating that there may be some mighty political hands behind her resignation. Her alibi for health did not sell; but when she talked about blocking “intentions of some quarters” to use SSS funds for the government's pro-poor agenda last Thursday, the public started to believe her and took her words as something sensible and credible.

In contrast, the appointment of Neri as the replacement met heavy public uproar as if he is “not fit” for the job. Such another case again of recycling cabinet people of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to various government posts. But what really makes Neri unworthy to the job in terms of public perception?

Not in view of his capability because he could do such job very well according to his pal Jun Lozada who was interviewed in a TV network; but It is his credibility to manage an institution that involves billions of people’s money. It has been damaged by the unresolved issues of the ZTE broadband.

But that does not matter with Neri who “vows to properly manage SSS funds once he assumes the position. However, with his record of outstanding loyalty to President Arroyo, will the public bite his assurance and negate him against speculations of possibly mishandling SSS funds?

Below is a write-up of the issue from RG Cruz posted in ABS-CBN News Online.

Neri vows to properly manage SSS funds

Incoming Social Security System (SSS) chief Romulo Neri has vowed to properly manage the funds of the agency’s 27 million private sector members, citing his background in finance and his record as budget chief.

Responding to critics that he was not qualified for the post, Neri told Malacanang reporters his "qualifications speak for itself."

"They can check my data, how I performed various functions at NEDA, DBM, CHED, and I think I performed satisfactorily," he said.

Neri will replace SSS chief Corazon de la Paz effective August 1.

It will be his fourth assignment under the Arroyo government after having served as director-general of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), secretary of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), and chairman of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

When he was named DBM chief, Neri said Arroyo critics feared that it was like appointing Dracula to manage the country’s blood bank. But he said he was able to do a good job at the DBM.

"When I was appointed by by the President to DBM, [former Education Secretary] Butch Abad said putting me in DBM is like putting Dracula at the blood bank. But I performed decently in DBM, there’s no blood bank phenomenon there," Neri said.

He said decisions at the SSS are made collectively through its council, and this reduces the chances of fund mismanagement.

"SSS is a council. It makes collective decisions, and it has representatives from workers group and the business sector. That alone should ensure they will be properly used, Neri said. "Labor is represented there, employers are represented, and SSS workers are active people. The won’t let shenanigans happen."

On critics' view that politics and orders of President Arroyo may lead to misuse of SSS funds, Neri told ABS-CBN’s Umagang Kay Ganda Thursday there should be no conflict between what the President wants and what the SSS members want.

He said the goals of Mrs. Arroyo and SSS members should be the same: to raise SSS funds so that more benefits will go to its members.

Closely monitor

Meanwhile, the employees' union of the SSS said it it will closely monitor Neri since he will be administering the money contributed by SSS members nationwide.

"We'll closely monitor Neri's actions," Dr. Carol Basilio, head of the SSS union told a radio dzMM interview.

"Bear in mind that we'll be on guard since this is not the government's money or the SSS's money," the union chief added.

She said that workers were surprised at the sudden turn of events.

"We were surprised. Actually, Mr. Neri, maybe he is a very intellectual man. But his credibility is at stake because of the ZTE scandal," Basilio said, referring to the botched government contract with a Chinese corporation that allegedly involved Neri and several other personalities close to President Arroyo.

Not for pro-poor programs

Earlier Thursday, outgoing SSS chief Corazon de la Paz said she blocked intentions of some quarters to use SSS members' funds for the government's pro-poor agenda.

"What I was saying was that it's not included in the [SSS] Charter. Using the funds has limits," de la Paz told ABS-CBN's "Umagang Kay Ganda" morning show.

She said that SSS funds cannot be used to finance pro-poor projects of the government "unless it is defined in the Charter." The SSS is a government-controlled financial institution.

De la Paz, who oversees the private fund that administers the pensions of at least 800,000 members, said she had to "make a stand".

She added that her decision may have been received negatively by some people.

The SSS chief had said on Wednesday that there was politics involved in her resignation, which will take effect on July 31.

"I said of course there will always be politics [in government], [especially] if your actions offended some people," de la Paz said.

Asked to specify what she meant by politics, de la Paz cited the current economic crisis being experienced by poor Filipinos.

"There are problems in our country that need to be dealt with funds," de la Paz said, adding that she was asked if SSS funds can be used to address these. -- with a report from RG Cruz

"Created by series creator Koji ‘IGA’ Igarashi, Castlevania Judgment is a roving fighting game utilising heroes and villains from the Castlevania universe. The fighting game has been designed specifically for the Wii, and uses the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers to offer a stunning level of control over the central heroes. Taking centre stage within a series of 3D locations inspired by previous Castlevania games, the controllers are used to slash, stab and employ a series of attacks against the assorted minions of Dracula."

... He's Living In My Grandmothers Closet.

This is a painting from my Cinematic Horror Series. Basically an homage to all the scary movies that freaked the crap out of me and made my imagination run wild. I really did think that vampires lived in my grandmothers closet. After seeing the movie Fright Night I always slept with the covers around my neck, thinking that if I covered my neck vampires would not be able to bite me.

We do what we can right ...

The movie Dracula is a classic and will never die. It, with Nosferatu, rank as two of the most amazingly spine chilling movies of all time. Just classy, and spooky and that's what makes them so scary. Strange how horror can become comforting over time.

I hope to add more monsters to this series in the future ...

Written by: Shane Black and Fred Dekker

Tagline: “Call them for a monster-ous good time!”

By: Jason Plissken

Pre-Screening Memories: I haven't seen The Monster Squad since I was in high school, but since it had “Monster” in the title, it was required viewing. I would scour the TV listings every week, checking for what creatures would be featured for the week. This one sounded like the Mother Lode, in that it featured all the classic monsters from Universal Studios: Dracula, the Wolf Man, Frankenstein's Monster, the Mummy, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. The movie came out in 1987, but I didn't see it until it came on HBO about a year later. My memories of the film are pretty vague but I did learn a number of things from watching it:

I remember the movie was corny but still able to keep my attention. There were several little details about the kids in the film that I wanted for my childhood: to battle monsters as a young kid, a really cool treehouse (that was two-story, no less!), and a neighborhood girl like Patrick's sister (played by Lisa Fuller, which was really the height of her film career, unless you count Teen Witch).

I thought that it was really cool that the main character, Sean Krenshaw (played by Andre Gower), was able to watch a nearby drive-in movie from his roof. I could not have cared less if I could not hear the dialogue, just watching it would have been enough to occupy me. I could do the whole Mystery Science Theater 3000 thing, I suppose, and make up my own dialogue.

I remember Fat Kid declaring that the "Wolf man had nards." Childish, I know, but 'nards' is just a funny word.

It was the first time I heard sex referred to as "dorking."Again, I was a kid, these things were endlessly fascinating to me.

I remember a World War II bomber loaded with Dracula's coffin in the
beginning. At the time, it seemed perfectly plausible for the ancient tomb of Nosferatu to circle over middle America for no apparent reason whatsoever.

I remember having a fondness for the film in the way it handled its leads, not treating them as typical “Hollywood” kids, in much the same way that “Stand By Me” and “The Goonies” seemed to. They never seemed to talk down to their targeted audience.

Will the exclusive “Monster Squad” still allow membership to Jason now that he's an old guy? Find out in the podcast here:

Making her start in ‘Noël à Québec’ at only 15 years old, Andrée Watters has grown into one of the biggest pop-rock sensations in Québec. After being discovered at the mere age of 15, it wasn’t until two years later in 2000 that Andrée Watters abandoned her small town home and left for Montréal to promote her singing career. A year later, Watters signed for her first contract with the multi-national recording company, SONY-BMG.

Finally, in 2003, Andrée released her first album ‘AW.’ With hit singles, ‘Si Exceptionnel,’ and ‘Dépendre de Toi,’ it’s no wonder why ‘AW’ received 5 nominations (most popular song of the year, show of the year interpreted by author-composer, year revelation, female interpreter of the year, and rock album of the year) in 2004.

Bringing back her powerful vocals in 2005, Andrée’s second album ‘À Travers’ proved even more successful when having won Rock Album of the Year in 2006.

Taking a short break from the recording studio, Watters tried a different tactic with her career, and decided to prove her talent on the stage. Alongside popular singers such as Bruno Pelletier, Watters undertook the role as Mina in Bruno’s ‘Dracula- Entre l’amour et la mort,’ Watters received positive feedback from fans and critics all around.

And like her first two previous albums, Watters used her amazing talent and creativity to write all ten songs and worked alongside Sylvain Cossette (who also portrayed the role as Mina’s lover, Jonathan, in ‘Dracula’) who helped produce her newest album. Later this year, or early 2009, this pop-rock singer plans to perform on her own tour after touring with musical talent Dan Bigras.

<<Come out, Neville!>>

The recent E3 conference has left many video game enthusiasts disappointed by the somewhat ineffectu

The recent E3 conference has left many video game enthusiasts disappointed by the somewhat ineffectual efforts of each major game manufacturer to allay doubt that, in the upcoming year, those who have purchased a given video game console will reflect on that investment with satisfaction. Nintendo, in particular, has been made the subject of censure for its failure to even grasp, much less fulfill, the desires of the demographic often referred to as 'hardcore gamers', this underscored by their professed belief that an installment in the 'Animal Crossing' series will appease those on whom was built the success of 'Gears of War'. Nevertheless, though many of those who, in their childhoods, passed countless hours playing Yoshi's Island may feel betrayed as the former kingpin of virtual entertainment gradually shifts its focus to casual players, my faith in the men and women who brought us Super Mario World remains steadfast, for their obligation to me as producers of the Wii console I own has been completely resolved by a single act, this act being the announcement that CASTLEVANIA JUDGMENT will be released sometime this fall, exclusively for the foresaid system.

As one may be able to surmise from the fact that I have included 'Dracula' among the broad categories to which topics discussed in this blog can typically be attributed, others of which are 'movies' and 'literature', Castlevania is the video game franchise of which I am most fond. Although I am of the opinion that, since the 1997 release of its 13th installment, Symphony of the Night, the series has become entrenched in a swiftly staling gameplay formula derivative of Metroid and an irritating art style derivative of anime, the opportunity to conquer the sanguinary Count in a spectacular fashion, often involving the use a whip aptly named 'Vampire Killer', draws me back, without fail, each time a new title is released. Of late, Castlevania's legacy has perpetuated itself primarily through side-scrollers for Nintendo's handheld systems, all of which have been profoundly similar in execution, and 3D adventure games for the Playstation 2 and XBOX, all of which have been both profoundly similar in execution and profoundly mediocre in quality, so ergo my enthusiasm for successive iterations of this pattern has understandably waned. Though the property has certainly spawned good games in the last eight years, these games have failed to truly excite me as I've known precisely what to expect. Judgment promises to bring this trend, be it for better or for worse, to an end, for two primary reasons- the release is a Wii exclusive, so a unique control scheme is all but guaranteed, and it's a fully 3D fighting game, Castlevania's first entry in the genre. Beyond this, the most inarguably awesome element of Judgment as we now know it is DRACULA'S PLAYABILITY. The chance to play as the man himself, rather than some mopey progeny or flamboyantly-clad reincarnation thereof, is one rarely offered by video games, a first for even Castlevania if I'm not mistaken, and this irresistibly cool opportunity all but ensures that I'll purchase the game should it prove anything but irredeemably awful, which possibility is always extant. Connectivity with the next handheld episode in the saga, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, provides me with a greater impetus to acquire that game as well. In conclusion, I applaud you, Nintendo and Konami-- while my peers may turn their backs on you, and while the majority of people may think I'm demented for being pleased by the directions you pursue, you still know how to make me happy. The below awesome fucking logo may be tentative, but it's leagues cooler than those of any other Castlevania games, as it most closely resembles Alien Sex Fiend's.

On the subject of playing as Dracula, I have just been stricken by a superb idea: free roaming Dracula game, a la Grand Theft Auto. As Dracula, you roam through the streets of victorian London, preying on the city's unwitting denizens and transforming them into your Un-Dead brethren. Needless to say, each of the Count's myriad powers are at your disposal- command of the Earth's meaner creatures, the power to take the form of a bat, a wolf, mist, or elemental dust in the moonlight, matchless cunning in drugging the servants of noblewomen. By strategically distributing your earth-boxes throughout the game-world, you advance your aim of extending your influence to entail the whole of the metropolis, though canny mortals may intrigue against you in hopes of thwarting your diabolical designs. Of course, missions would be available in order to provide the game some sort of framework, though I cannot at this time cogitate any idea as to what those missions might be as, on the whole, Dracula is too cool for tasks outside of blood and conquest. Holy shit, that I am merely recording my opinions concerning video games rather than receiving limitless funding with which to engineer my own is a travesty.

Now, I have taken a short hiatus from bloggery of late, because I've been trapped in central London overseeing 'Big Brother 9' content, and having a high old time of it. From my office window, I am commanded a fine view of the concrete monstrosity known to cockerneys as Centre Point, and with London generally starting to smell of new paint in the run up to Britain hosting the 2012 Olympics, it seems this huge carbuncle is finally to recieve a top floor restaurant, as was promised..oooo...40 years ago (you can't stop the urban progress round here!). Anyway, this has upset me slightly due to a drunken night several years ago when I watched both the 'Satanic rights of Dracula' with the top-notch Christopher Lee, and the slightly-less than-top-notch Dan Curtis version of Dracula, starring Jack Palance (the only man I know ever to have battled both Bernard Bresslaw and Erin Grey, people who's only other link is warping my sense of erotica at an early age-Erin with the jumpsuits, Bernard by being in the background when Babs Windsor's tits pop out in 'Carry On Camping). Anyway, the two have become entwined in my booze ridden brain, to the point where I am now convinced that the reason the top floor lights of centre point are never on, is because Jack Palance stalks the top floor, descending only to drink the blood of first time virgins queing for 'G.A.Y' on a saturday night. now it seems he will merely stay put, dining on Gordon Ramsay dishes and entertaining the tourists. Oh how the mighty have fallen!
