Dr. Dre's Daughter is set to release a tell all documentary. His daughter Manaj is a rapper and claims that Dr. Dre did nothing to put her on. Her documentary is called Daddy's Shadow. I think if Dre hasn't put her on yet he REALLY won't do it now. You really have to watch how you come at people. It's ways to get people to pay attention to you. I don't know if this is the best way but we'll see...I wish u much success Manaj. Keep grindin. Here's the trailer....

It's confirmed Eminem is working on next LP...

For Eminem fans, the four-year wait since the Detroit MC released his last studio album, Encore, has been painful. But according to Dr Dre’s latest protégé, Bishop Lamont, the end of the drought could be right around the corner. “Em is excited,” Lamont said, according to an Entertainment Weekly blog report. “He’s been quiet too long, and he’s got a lot to get off his chest.”

No release date has been set yet for the album, but Em’s label confirmed that he’s in the studio at work on the album. The 35-year-old MC has been on hiatus for the past two-plus years, in part to deal with his emotions about the 2006 death of best friend and fellow D12 member Proof in a bar shooting in Detroit, but Lamont said Slim Shady is emerging from his grief. “He went through what he had to go through, and now he’s been able to take all the pain and stress and put it out in his music.”

Searching the internet for news on the upcoming solo album from former Floetry singer Marsha Ambrosi

Searching the internet for news on the upcoming solo album from former Floetry singer Marsha Ambrosius, I came across a free downloadable mixtape her label, Dr. Dre's Aftermath, produced as a way to do an underground promotion of her in anticipation of the release of the full recording. The mixtape is called Neo-Soul Is Dead, released in November 2007, and much of the disc is retread of famous Dr. Dre beats, mostly from The Chronic.

It's fine to declare Neo-Soul to be dead, Erykah Badu did that about 5 years ago. But it's quite another thing to all of a sudden become this gangstress singing to the beat of Dre's "Bitches Ain't Shit" about how "all you bitches don't mean shit to me" when you were giving us some of the most beautful R & B love songs recorded in this generation! You would hardly recognize the vocalist from "It's Getting Late" and "Like A Bird" with songs like "Grind You Up" and "You's a Beeyatch!!!"

I'm all for artists growing in new directions musically--but this kind of 180 is just too much. Badu's new recording is a stark departure from her previous work, but she's not talking about fightin' "bitches" and actin like she's a Crip all of a sudden. I am not sure if I want to hear the full recording when it drops later this year.

I can live if neo-soul is dead, but I hope integrity isn't.

The label that spawned such hits records as “Dr. Dre’s “The Chronic,” Tupac Shukaur’s “All Eyez On Me,” and Snoop Dogg’s “Doggystyle,” is now owned by Global Music Group. Picked up at a bankruptcy auction, the once proud label is now a new toy for a relatively unknown music company.

Death Row’s past owner, Suge “I got knocked out with one punch” Knight was forced to file for bankruptcy when the label collapsed. Loaded with debt, a federal judge appointed a bankruptcy trustee to take over the label and ready it for auction.

According to Global Music CEO Anthony Davi Jr., the label is going to try and find the most profitable ways to use the vault of rap tunes and that they should have an announcement soon.

(image via PhotoBucket)

Death Row Records, the hip-hop label that released seminal gangster rap albums by Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, has been auctioned for $24 million.

The New York-based Global Music Group Inc. said in a statement to The Associated Press on Monday that on June 24 it purchased Death Row, including its enviable back catalog and current artist contracts.

The purchase concluded the roller-coaster saga of one of hip-hop's most famous labels. Under owner Marion "Suge" Knight, Death Row sold tens of millions of albums in the heyday of early `90s rap — its artists often flashing the spoils of the high life in music videos — before collapsing in debt and mismanagement.

A former couple, Lydia and Michael Harris, claimed they helped found the label, and won a judgment of $107 million, which they tried to collect in 2006. Unable to pay, Death Row and Knight filed for bankruptcy in April 2006, claiming debts of more than $100 million.

In 2006, a federal judge ordered a bankruptcy trustee takeover of Death Row Records, saying the label had undergone gross mismanagement. Knight's decision to file for bankruptcy protection staved off a move by the court to appoint someone to take control of the record label and his assets.

Global Music Group, an independent label, takes ownership of albums including Dr. Dre's "The Chronic," Shakur's "All Eyez on Me" and Snoop Dogg's "Doggystyle."

Other assets are believed to include unreleased material from Shakur that could result in another posthumous release from the rapper.

Knight has a history of legal problems. He was convicted of assault in 1992 and placed on probation, then jailed for five years in 1996 for violating that probation.

He was returned to jail in 2003 for again violating parole, this time by punching a parking attendant at a Hollywood nightclub. He was released the next year.

In 2006 under questioning from his creditors, Knight denied having money tucked away in foreign countries. His bank account then contained just $11.

Global Music CEO Anthony Davi, Jr., said the label planned to get "the best economic results of the catalog and provide long term stewardship of the artists' work." The company plans to later announce details of its plans for Death Row.

Ok, so what happens now!? Who is still on Death Row? Does anybody know...?

The fact that Dr. Dog comes on my iPod right before Dr. Dre is an unfortunate circumstance. First off, the Dr. Dre was never supposed to be there in the first place. As if knowing that an extra whirl of my thumb will bring up "The Chronic (Intro)" isn't frightening enough, I also have to deal with my consciousness for having a song called "Pause 4 Porno" (what a BANGER!!!) on there as well.

But, this isn't about you, Dr. Dre. No, this is about your retro-styled indie-pop counter part, Dr. Dog.

I received a promo for Dr. Dog's upcoming album Fate (hear that, I didn't STEAL it) from the radio station I work at on Monday, and haven't stopped listening since. Get this, I even liked it enough to show to my mom--to put it in perspective, I think the last record I showed her was Weird Al Yankovic's The Food Album back in 5th grade.

I'm not going to write out a full length review of this piece, because I'm sure that you'll be able to read one in Pitchfork shortly after Fate's July 22 release. But, let me just say this. This is fucking MUSIC. I don't know if these guys kidnapped Paul McCartney and Jeff Tweedy and somehow made them procreate, but this is the most melodic shit ever. Rustic production, bubbly basslines, and sweet sweet harmonies for days.

Well according to Nas it died a few years ago and to be honest, it's very hard to disagree with him.

Since the golden age of Hip Hop there has been very few artists that have been groundbreaking and that demand to challenge listeners with clever informative lyrical content and amazing production techniques.

Last year Hip Hop reached an all time low when the highlight of the year was the short lived but much hyped competition between 50 Cent and Kanye West, to see who could out sell each other in album sales.

What happened to artists engaging the listener to think and to lose their shit at the same time like, Public Enemy and A Tribe Called Quest. Or the quirky lyrics and dope production of De La Soul and the Beastie Boys. West and east coast gangsta rap was also groundbreaking with artists such as NWA and the Wu Tang Clan with Dre and RZA's amazing production and the many legendary charismatic MC's such as Ice Cube(NWA) and Ghostface Killah(Wu Tang). I mean what is it today? G Unit and The Game!. Even worse, Snoop colloborates with the Pussycat Dolls! Who would of ever thought the D to the G would stoop so low!

Well thankfully there have been a few artists that have come out in the last few years to challenge all this shit! Here is a selection of who I think people should check out. Now fizzle that nizzle and get bizzle!

The Cool Kids

I saw these guys at St Jeromes this year and they bring that ol school bboy vibe, funny as fuck and a laid back groove to their lyrics. Highly Recommended!

Spank Rock

Bringing all kinds of dirty lyrics and party vibe to the table is MC Spank Rock. Gets all of his now famous friends such as XXXchange for amazing funky production. This is all happening while he spits out lyrics of pretty much one thing, rooting. The new 2 Live crew. Check out this video for some ol school 2 live Crew goodness.

Lastly Kid Sister

ohhhhhhhhh this cool chick is all about the party and she is the solo salt n pepa!

That's it for me, now get your bling and those Run DMC Adidas shoes on, then get on that good foot and do the bad thing.

Peace out

A'ight, here's the dizzle: The d-o-double gizzle is in the Lou this Saturdizzle. Snoop Dogg is guarantizzled to pull out his sweet summer jams ("Drop It Like It's Hot," "Who Am I (What's My Name?")) at this show, fo' shizzle. Though he's known for smoking lots of marijuizzle, Snoopizzle is far from a stoned slackizzle. He's even improved his shizzle from the early days of Cali-collaborating with Dr. Dreizzle. Quite the entreprenizzle, Tha Doggfather also knows how to get paid lots of bizzles. From directing pornizzles to pimping out poonizzles, he's got all kinds of businizzles. C'mon, maybe it's about tizzle to take a break from grilling outside of your red brick hizzle. Don't stay home and watch another Cardinizzles game on the televizzle — roll out to the Verizon Wireless Ampivizzle 'cause this show is sure to be off the hizzle.

Man darf also gespannt sein!

I used to be heavy into Slim getting any track I could get my hands on. This is why it upsets me so much when he releases albums that have tracks like "Ass Like That" and "Just Lose It." For a fan like me its redemption time.

Shit, Infinite is up in the Bgsounds top 10 for sure any day. I want Em back attacking the mic. His vengeance is what drives his knife-like flow.

Heres some tracks, quality not so good sorry its the only stuff i could get at the moment.

After the jump, my favorite cover-versions of songs that will probably shock the hell out anyone who doesn't read the ANTM and/or Animal Food stuff I post.

Nina Gordon, "Straight Outta Compton" (originally done by NWA)

A former theater director I worked with turned me on to this song. I have nothing else to add.

Ben Folds, "Bitches Ain't Shit" (originally done by Dr. Dre and a shit load of people)

What is up with white people and NWA? Whatever, I still own this song on my computer.

Alanis Morrisette, "My Humps" (originally done by the Black-Eyed Peas)

It's an improvement over the annoying original.

Paul Anka, "It's My Life" (originally done by Bon Jovi)

It's amazing how many songs So You Think You Can Dance can turn you on to. This is one of them. Also: this song is better than the original.

Off-topic, but I can't believe that my best friend presented herself as cool in high school and liked this band. Okay, back on-topic.

Palast Orchester mit Max Raabe, "Just A Gigalo" (originally done by Louis Prima)

[vodpod id=ExternalVideo.635176&w=425&h=350&fv=]

more about "Palast Orchester mit seinem S", posted with vodpod

This is the German version; there's also an English verison, and the best way to hear it is to listen to [shameless plug] the Clockwork Caberet podcast (specifically Episode 24: Happy Birthday, Nikola Tesla!), which is a podcast that caters to a steampunk asthetic, but whatever. It's still a great ecclectic mix of songs. And the show is broadcast in Carrboro, near where I used to go to school at.[/shameless plug]

Not a remake, just an excuse to talk about how awesome this song is: The Egyptian Lover, "Egypt, Egypt"

If you saw So You Think You Can Dance last night, you'll remember that this was the song Comfort (The Dancer That Cannot Die) danced to in her "okay, we changed the format of the show this year, so this is a time-filling performance now" solo. Hey, I didn't think she knew about this song!

Global Music Group Inc. bought a bankrupt Death Row Records, at auction, for $24 million dollars, Ju

Global Music Group Inc. bought a bankrupt Death Row Records, at auction, for $24 million dollars, June 24, 2008 sources have revealed. The notorious record label and its' embattled founder, Suge Knight, struggled for years to maintain a legitimate presence in the Hip Hop world, only to see his once revered empire crumble from ruthless business tactics, strong-arm management, a luke-warm roster of talent and a leader constantly fighting personal legal issues. As late as 2006, Suge Knight filed for protection under bankruptcy laws, claiming Death Row's debts exceeded the $100 million mark.

Death Row Records, once the enviable home of such Hip Hop artist as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Da Dogg Pound and Tupac, lost its' talent, but didn't lose the prize: the music catalog. Any songwriter worth his/her salt knows that the true gold, the real money, comes from that catalog. Owning those rights to your creative works.

Well, Dr. Dre once said that he was happy to break away from Suge and his 'organization' with the shirt on his back. To be honest, Dre was more than fortunate to walk away period, Tupac wasn't that blessed.

But the last time I checked, Dr. Dre's debut ground-breaking musical collection, "The Chronic," has sold over $4 million copies since 1993. Snoop Dogg's "Doggy Style" has sold $7 million units as of 2003 and is rated 4X platinum. And Tupac's "All Eyez On Me," the first Hip Hop double album in history, currently has sold more than $9 million copies! Death Row has sold over 50million units world wide and has racked in a staggering $750 million dollars in revenue.

Need I also say that the late Tupac Shakur still has tons of unreleased material in the Death Row vaults?

Let's just be frank. Global Music Group Inc. is sitting on a Gold Mine. And as an added bonus, they got a prolific music catalog worth multi-millions on a blue-light special deal! So, trust me, investors who are now suing Global Music Group for $25 million are not even poised to make a dent in that mega-million wallet.

Sorry Dr. Dre. Would you like that Tangeray on ice?

(Cube amúgy lesújtó véleménnyel van a rapiparról, "(...) it's all about shooting and killing, partying, drinking, smoking, women, cars, jewellery", mondja, ám azt állítja, a mai helyzet kialakulásában nincs felelőssége az N.W.A.-nek.)

A legvalószínűbbnek mégis az tűnik, hogy az "új" Arabian Prince cuccról érkező hírek miatt mentünk rá a régi zenékre - az egykori N.W.A. tag munkáiból készült retrospektív válogatással izzít a Stones Throw. Az Innovative Life: The Anthology 1984-1989 című anyag augusztus 19-én jön, húszoldalas booklettel, fotókkal és kis időrendi táblázattal a west coast rap történetéről.

A Brother Arab egyik gyöngyszeme: She's Got A Big Posse

Ugyanakkor mindenképp kijár a tisztelet Mik Lezannek, aki már akkor szólólemezt csinált, amikor én rugósfocin játszottam le a korabeli magyar rangadókat. Tiszteletbeli magyarnak tekintettem a brazilokat is persze. Bővebben nem írnék most az 1984-ben alapított west coast legenda Bobby Jimmy & the Crittersről, ahogy az életmű egyéb vonatkozásairól, például a holland Clone kiadó körüli mozgolódásairól sem - a zenei múltba révedés helyett most a Stones Throw-s motyó tart izgalomban.

It's official... one of the biggest players at the forefront of the 1990's Gangsta Rap movement has flatlined. In 1991, Dr. Dre and Suge Knight came together to form what was to be one of the most influential record labels of the time and genre in Death Row. Death Row not only launched Dr. Dre's The Chronic, arguably one of the most important albums of the genre, but also provided the starting point for Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound (Daz and Kurupt) and 2Pac's All Eyez on Me...a bounty for Death Row bailing Pac out of jail. At its peak, Death Row was the undisputed heavyweight when it came to Gangsta Rap.

Over the years, Death Row sold over 50 million units and banked somewhere in the range of 750 million dollars. However, after 1997, the majority of all of this profit was from the ownership of the master recordings from 2Pac, Dre and Snoop, and the company had grown stagnant in regards to new material. Further escalating their issues was the fact that Suge Knight, basically power hungry and still feeling like he owned the world, continued to alienate rappers and fans and failed to produce anything that could follow the success of Death Row's formative years.

In addition, of the hundreds of millions of dollars Death Row produced, large portions were claimed in court lawsuits by people who provided start up money and were never given a share of the revenue This ended with Knight declaring bankruptcy (137M owed, only 4M in assets) and the record label was put up for auction Today, Death Row was purchased, masters and all for $24 million by Global Music Group. GMG dabbles in country, rock, R&B and now hip-hop and rap, as they have mentioned plans to sign new artists and release more vaulted 2Pac material. When you think about the kind of revenue that these masters are still producing today, $24 million for the entire catalog seems like a steal Of course, you're not getting much in the way of brand name recognition because rap fan's memories are about as long as a radio single these days, but there has to be some future value from the old masters

.

So, to Death Row Records, a leader in the changing face of rap music in the early 90s, Evolving Music wishes you a fond farewell, and a future with a global music conglomerate not unlike the major labels I deride on a regular basis.
