Film scholars often tumble so blindly into the treacherous trap of greatly underestimating the vast worth of capturing footage in a meticulous manner. I’ve worked on over two dozen odd productions, each of varying mediums (shorts, music videos, corporate videos, live-to-air television) and have observed a very common blunder that directors and often their cinematographers too often perform; they overlook the basic fact that no matter how staggeringly poignant a thespians performance is or how immersive the set designs leaves you – none of it is of any consequence unless filmed properly.

Cinematography is infinitely more than – to be blunt – “filming what was written.” Production isn’t a play to be “covered.” Each frame, every angle, the focal length, the mobility of camera and most importantly – the correlation between every shot captured is of utmost significance – the supremacy of these disregarded facets is mind-boggling. Every shot has the ability to sway a viewer – by saying “That has to be a medium shot” is not enough. Nowhere near enough.

Every other role in cinema is expendable. You don’t need a director, a producer, a first AD, actors, a production designer, a sound designer, an editor or even a writer to make a film (although, without all of these things, a very poor film will be made). But the camera is essential. Even when cameras aren’t employed to compose shots (animation) a director of photography is nonetheless appointed to make compositional decisions and what have you.

Cinematography exists to bestow audiences with whatever the story or idea intends. The camera is film’s prime weapon.

Arcane is now a dead spec with the changes to arcane blast.  Fire lost a major piece of our dps cycle with the changes to improved scorch now only affecting scorch.  Frost was always the pvp spec of choice but i don't pvp that much any more so frost is falls on def ears with me.

Going to pose a question to everyone.   Name for me one class in equal gear that is a pure dps class that doesn't out dps us.    

Here is the real kick in the pants name for me one pure dps class that has less survivability than the mage class in a dps spec.

The coverage here on paper looks rather simple:

Now to the reality of things. To light the bar so it doesn't look overlit, however we can still read people's faces proved to be a challenge for our master-gaffer latchman. He was running 8 lights at one point, including a blondie which he had to hide behind a pole so the tracking camera would not pick it up.

Once lit, we also made the decision to lose the extra gelled dedos and gel them all blue for more of a bar-feel. The director Bill wanted more light than latch and I. We felt it was almost lit too much and took away from the bar feel of things. In hindsight, we can probably whack on some AAE filters or even in final cut make it look gloomier should we wish to do so.

I wanted strong rim light on the actors to separate them from the crowd and especially the backdrop, which worked well. The only problem we really ran into once the camera was rolling is extras casting hideous shadows when they bypassed our talent. We tried to eliminate that as much as possible.

Tracking paning, tilting and craning in the one movement turned out to be a bit of an impossibility. We tried the EST wide shot a few times, and I think we got one that we can work with.

Last things bar. We really needed a smoke machine to refract the light and create a hazy look, common for bar scenes. Our may look a little stale, but Jen and Latch did a fantastic job directing the extras, especially the bar staff looked like they were actually bar staff.

We've wrapped Bill's film now and shot all the footage we needed for Reflections.

The bathroom shoot was challenging but very interesting. As expected the focus was the most difficult part of the shoot. Because we wanted as much shallow depth of field as we could, focusing was very sensitive. The actors moved as well and especially on the wide shots it was just not always possible to follow-focus on them.

I am quite satisfied with what went through the CCD and onto tape thought. We got a few shots exactly as storyboarded and a lot of them have shallow DOF.

Using London as an inspiration for our bathroom scene allowed me to experiment with framing and perspective. In several shots it succeeded and the actors seem to talk into the same direction (one in the reflection the other real). To create intimacy I filled the frame with our talent (which by the way was fantastic and very professional and relaxed) and their reflections.

Tracking shots in the bathroom posed another challenge as there were people required, space was lacking and mirrors ALWAYS reflect. At the end of the day though when I looked over at the split and there's a big smile on the director's face, I know I'm on the right path.
