A little knowledge about stress and its effect on health benefits everyone.  It is estimated by the American Institute of Stress, that 75% to 90% of all doctor’s visits are caused by reactions to stress.

Stress poses a profound difficulty for everyone.  But more black men die from heart attacks associated with stress than any other ethnic group in the United States.

• 50% of African Americans who suffer from the “blues” or depression do not seek help
• 88% of women and 69% of men will get headaches and stress is the number one cause
• Stress is the number one health problem facing African Americans.  35% of African American men compared to 25% of other ethnic groups are affected by hypertension (high blood pressure)
• 1 out of every 9 women who seek care in the emergency rooms is there because of injuries resulting from domestic violence.  There is evidence to support that neighborhood crime is rooted in unhealthy stress
• Stoke is identified as being 67% higher in African American men than other ethnic groups and 88% more blacks are more likely to die from a stroke than whites

The everyday struggle of dealing with prejudice also contributes to the high and potentially deadly levels of stress in the African American community.  With the challenges of poverty, discrimination, injustice, poor choices, etc., the quality of life for African Americans both male and female encourages an ongoing and constant schizophrenic mind set of anger and assimilation that many experts believe is a primary reason for the increased death rates among the African Americans.

Suggested Stress Checklist for African Americans

• Being out of work for a month or longer

• Having a serious illness or accident

• Not having enough money for food, clothing, housing, or other necessities of life

• Being concerned with getting credit

• Having a problem with getting things repaired around the house

• Having a check arrive late or lost in the mail

• Having something stolen or having the house or car broken into

• Having a violent argument with a friend or relative

• Having some other kind of trouble with family members

• Being concerned about living in an unsafe area

• Living with racism  (Patrick Romano, 1990)

 An autistic woman who had worked at the McDonald's in downtown Berkeley for 21 years showed up at her job in March, after a change in ownership, and was told that she and two other disabled workers were no longer needed, she says.

"I was devastated ... then I was really just angry," Lisa Craib said after filing a discrimination complaint Tuesday with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. After she was fired, the complaint said, the fast-food restaurant at Shattuck and University avenues posted a sign: "Help Wanted - Equal Opportunity Employer."

This is my suggestion for providing him with a little autism education. And then things got even more interesting when I brought up a recent use of the word "retarded" by another mother of a disabled child.

I oppose the policy.  I think it's ridiculous- and agree with retired Marine Sgt. Eric Alva when he said "he nearly died to secure right for others that [he himself] was not free to enjoy."  Others who disagree with this policy feel the same way- that mainly, sexual orientation shouldn't, and doesn't affect the ability to serve one's country.

Donnelly and her supporters have a long list of reasons why the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy should be upheld.  All of her reasons are unfounded, discriminatory and insulting.  She believes that forced intimacy, unwanted advances, exotic sexual practices, and that allowing gays to serve openly in the military would be "devastating due to the increased sexual atmosphere."  One person who spoke in Donnelly's defense suggested that soldiers often have to huddle together for safety or warmth, and that doing so with openly gay soldiers would make for an uncomfortable situation.

Does anyone else find similarities with this and the segregation that occurred in the 60s?  Those that choose to serve and protect our country should not fear for their well-being and livelihood due to a lifestyle choice that has no effect on their career.  Allegations such as the above suggest paint gay men and women in the military as rabidly sexualized human beings.  The idea that a gay man would hit on another man just because he happens to be at the same place at the same time is antiquated.  Picture it this way.  Do heterosexual men hit on every woman in the military, just out of convenience?  No.  Let's please give those in the gay community more respect than this.  And as for "forcible intimacy?"  I see no difference in the risk factors of forced intimacy between gay soldiers than what already exists among heterosexual soldiers.

We should give those that give their lives for our country the utmost respect.  It's offensive that our country leaders still support a policy that alienates so many.  The fact that the policy is being called into question for its relevancy is reassuring- its time the military moves into the the 21st century and supports ALL of those who in turn support us.

Two Muslim women said they were denied jobs at a McDonald's restaurant in Dearborn because they wore Islamic headscarves, according to a discrimination lawsuit filed today in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Toi Whitfield, 20, of Detroit, and Quiana Pugh, 25, of Dearborn, said they applied for jobs at the McDonald's on Ford Road in the eastern section of Dearborn, but were told by the store manager "you're not going to work here if you don't remove" the headscarf, known as hijab. According to the women, he also said he couldn't "really hire you due to your scarf."

A spokeswoman for McDonald's did not immediately comment on the lawsuit, but said a statement would be coming soon.

The Dearborn restaurant happens to be one of only two stores in the U.S. that sells Chicken McNuggets that are halal, the Muslim equivalent of kosher.

Dawud Walid, head of the Michigan branch of the Council on American Islamic Relations, said that it's upsetting that a restaurant with such a large Muslim customer base would discriminate against Muslim women employees.

"They'll take Muslim dollars, but won't hire Muslim female employees," Walid said.

The case was filed in Detroit against the store manager, a management company, and McDonald's. It alleges the restaurant violated a state civil rights law.

The store is located in an area with one of the largest Arab-American and Muslim communities in the U.S.

Walid said the two Muslim women were African-Americans born in the United States.

DEARBORN -- A $10 million lawsuit was filed Thursday against a Dearborn McDonalds on the grounds they refused to hire two Muslim women because of their dress.

Toi Whitfield and Quiana Pugh said they were denied employment by the McDonalds on Ford Road because they wore a hijab, a traditional Muslim head covering.

Both women said it was the same manager who refused to hire them, and that the discrimination has been happening for years.

firstly Solidad did a great job as an outsider looking in.  However, One can only find what one is looking for.  Her real questions, that seem to surface between the lines, are the same as always...."There's all this opportunity, why don't you guys take advantage of it?"

It would have been a much better perspective into the lives of Black women should a Black woman have delved the documentary.  I don't know about other Black women but for me, she didn't scratch the surface of why or what we experience being black in america. 

As far as the negative connotation of a Black man paying black children to learn...Why is that needed?  Much research has been done to prove that When teachers believe a student can't learn, they fail to teach.  What the teacher believes whether said or unsaid is more absorbed by the young mind than any lesson "thrown AT them" and Black America has rapidly deteriorated and grown in self-hatred and hopelessness since armed guards escorted our babies into an intergrated school system of teachers who hated blacks or at the least believed we were inferior servants. 

Maybe no one wants to admit that but whenever we leave others to do our job especially those who don't want to do it....it will be less desirable than if we would have done it ourselves.  What mother would want someone to teach their child who has to be held at gunpoint because they hate them so much?  what outcome could you possibly expect?

NOW my question is...who do we turn to, to fix this mess?  Have we learned anything from the past?

A couple of months ago, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission released this letter with respect to what you can and cannot say in help wanted ads. The letter had to do with wordings in ads aimed at targeting minority candidates.

From the EEOC:

You first ask whether it is legal for an employer to use phrases in job advertisements such as “women or minorities are encouraged to apply.” To develop an applicant pool that reflects the demographics of the qualified labor force, it may be necessary to encourage members of underrepresented groups to apply. We know of no case in which an employer has been held liable for using such language in their job advertisements. As one court observed, “(a)n employer’s affirmative efforts to recruit minority and female applicants (do) not constitute discrimination. So the EEOC is effectively saying that it is OK to encourage certain minority groups to apply for your job posting. It also says, though, that you cannot “seek” certain groups. For example, you cannot say, “seeking female candidates,” which would imply a bias in hiring.

UNITY is pandering to the non-UNITY colored journalists, including olive-skinned Arab American journalists, in much the same way as the mainstream White media panders to UNITY's "founding" members. I guess after working for "the man," you learn things and start practicing both the good and the bad.

Of course, UNITY has some token panel discussions on Arab American issues buried deep in their thick agenda of alleged diversity exploration, the fact is that UNITY is more of an oxymoron than it is an effective voice for "journalists of color." UNITY is a voice for Blacks, Hispanics, Asians and Native American journalists and that's it.

The mainstream media doesn't care because the last thing they want is for more journalists to demand a place at "the table" and expand the rainbow. And honestly, I don't believe that's what UNITY really wants either. I think UNITY is less about "journalists of color" and more about "journalists of clout color." They have a certain number of seats at the journalism table and they don't want to make room for more journalists.

How else do you explain their refusal to work with Arab American journalism organizations, for example, by respecting them? I can imagine that's how the mainstream media must have treated the first African American journalist who tried to demand a place at "the table,"  to be given the first seat in the theater of "journalism diversity." I bet the mainstream media hated that person as much as they are now disparaging me when the issue comes up. (No one likes the person who stands up for civil rights until the issue is won.)

Of course, there are groups supporting diversity from the mainstream media, like the Tribune Foundation. They can't help Arab American journalists much as our group doesn't have a 501 (c) 3 designation. So, diversity does come down to money, not principle, I guess?

But later today, The Tribune Foundation will release a study they funded for UNTIY on the Washington Press Corp which reiterates what it discovered the last time they studied diversity in the journalism clique in the nation's capitol. There isn't much diversity for "journalists of color" or even UNITY's definition of "journalists of clout color." Then, the Tribune Foundation study deterined that less than 10.5 percent of the reporters, correspondents, columnists, editors and bureau chiefs in the Washington daily newspaper press corps are "journalists of color" - 60 out of 574.

I bet they didn't include Arab Americans who live in limbo. Blacks consider Arabs White and Whites consider Arabs Black. That tension between Blacks and Arabs is also a possible source behind the refusal of UNITY to address Arab American concerns more seriously.

Long before Sept. 11, 2001, Arab Americans have been discriminated in this country by the mainstream media. Since, that discrimination has only increased and more and more Arab American journalists are being either pushed from jobs or pressured into minimizing their "Arab identity" to the point were several over the past few years have actually been forced out of their journalism jobs.

You won't hear UNITY talk about those problems. I'll bet every Arab American journalist pushed from a job has been replaced by a "journalist of clout color."

But you will hear UNITY talk about how to cover Arab Americans, a panel suggestion made by the National Arab American Journalists Association (NAAJA) that thankfully one UNITY member cares about. The panel was advocated by the Asian American Journalists Association which has shown a real concern for the plight of Arab American journalists, which spins off of an internal presence of a significant number of Muslims in the Asian community. (Okay, one of the big problems is that mainstream and "journalists of color" interchange words that are not interchangable like "Muslims" and "Arabs" but that's okay when they do it out of compassion not discrimination.)

So we won't be at UNITY. Ironically, UNITY is trying to compensate by increasing from one to two the number of panels addressing Arab American related issues -- they want to dilute the term "Arab" and convert it into the broader "Middle Eastern" category. And, they have at least one function at one of our Arab American restaurants.

Too bad there are not more Arab American journalists participating at UNITY. There could have been. But maybe that's too much diversity for UNITY to swallow.

Plot Summary:

A young woman wishes to marry her boyfriend and raise a family, but because her own family has been deemed "defective" by the state health authorities--her parents are lazy alcoholics who continue to have children, and several of her brothers and sisters have mental problems--she is ordered by a court to undergo sterilization so that her family's "defective genes" won't be passed on to any more children. Her boyfriend and a kindly priest desperately search for a way to stop the forced sterilization before it's too late.

Great! You made it to the end.  Nice little film wasn't it?  I thought so, but I couldn't help but feel that having the heroine saved by "mistaken identity/bureaucratic incompetence" really weakens the whole anti-sterilization argument that the film hoped to make.  There were stronger, although less tangible, arguments throughout, especially in part 4 (The appeal to the inhumanity of the procedure from the hospital bed), that could have been expanded and given more prominence.  Given how far the film had already gone in pushing its message of mistaken identity by part 5 I was wholly expecting part 6 to end on a very dark note.  I was happy that it didn't at the time (As much as I despise to admit it I am a child of the American film industry), but on reflection I wonder if an I-told-you-so-now-look-what-you've-done approach might have driven home the point better.  Oh well, I guess I should just be happy that anything like this was even made in the 30s.

As a final note, the film should also be applauded for not continuing with what might be considered another attempt to feminize disability/weakness as this piece of trivia makes clear:

Look, if you hate someone because they hurt you in any way, or are generally an ass, then I don't give a shit if they are gay, straight or asexual. Of course, hitting them in the head might not be the best solution, from my point of view, you still have at least some right to do it. (That doesn't mean I encourage violence, but sometimes I wish I could solve my problems through sheer force. Then again, I'm probably not strong enough to do that... :P )

But, what is still completely beyond me, is what can bring anyone to hate and hurt people only because they aren't afraid of showing that they are different? Guess what, you're probably different in some way. You might have dark skin, yellow eyes or six fingers. What the hell gives you the right to say that they are the ones who don't deserve to live a full life, that they must hide who they really are only because they are not the same as you?

I'd like to know what the people who participated in the... "fights" wanted to achieve. Were they trying to tell the homosexuals to return to the "normal way of living"? Cause being hit by straight guys is so very convincing. Were they just having fun? I sure hope not. Wanna know why? Because *that* would make it even more disgusting. I cannot, in any way respectthose people who hurt others as a fucking hobby. Or were they actually trying to hurt them?

Let's assume you're not completely crazy, and you actually do some thinking before you do things. They are strangers. You have no idea who they are. Most likely, they have family. Possibly kids. (adopted or not) What will the 3 year old little girl think when daddy (no. 1. :P ) tells her that his head is bleeding because people can't stand the fact that he loves daddy (no. 2.)? Where's the fucking freedom we worked so hard to achieve?

Then there are the ones who are ok with homosexual people, but say that they shouldn't show that they are gay/lesbian/whatever, that they can do what they want at home, behind closed doors. Why? Because they find it disgusting. I don't see why but that's not the point, they can't choose their feelings, although they do have some control over them.

But. I find a whole lot of people disgusting. I find people who smell disgusting. I find the looks fat people wearing tight clothes disgusting (note that I don't think the people themselves are in any way bad, just the way they dress). I also find racists disgusting. Yet I don't go around carrying a goddamn frying pan, and hitting them all on the head. (although some of them deserves it... ^^)

Anyway. Let's say I don't care about your motivation, your feelings, or your prejudices. Well guess what, you still don't have the right to hurt others. Go fishing instead, find something to make your miserable little life more interesting. And no, throwing eggs, especially ones that can blow things up, does not count as expressing your opinion. On the one hand, yes, there is a disability community or movement, although I have seen discussions in various places in the blogosphere about what that means. Unfortunately, I can't find the specific blog posts that I'm sure I remember reading, but three people who talk about this in very interesting ways are MiSS CRiP CHiCK, Wheelchair Dancer and Frida Writes.

BUT as Sara points out, those of us who are not currently disabled are only temporarily able-bodied (TAB).

And while I recognise that a TAB person who has an even-more-temporary disability (such as a broken leg) can still probably not understand the "everything" referred to by Frida Writes, and that this means, perhaps, that people in the disability community don't want TAB people who are even-more-temporarily not TAB referred to as people with disabilities ... still, I wonder:

Does the comment extracted above "other" people with disabilities by inferring there's "us", TABs (who may or may not have temporary disabilities), and then there's "them" (people with disabilities)?

And if so: what does this mean for the ability of airports (and others) to really help people with disabilities (in ways that those people see as actually helpful)?
