New Canon Eos 40D images

Back in August I started getting back into my photography hobby with a nice point and shoot camera, the Olympus SP-560UZ. Having totally enjoyed the experience I recently dove a little deeper into my hobby with the purchase of a new Canon Eos 40D.

It's been awhile since I posted any thumbs, so I figured I'd sneak a few of my favorite recent shots in tonight. Hope you like them. (Click thumbnails to enlarge.)

It's been awhile...

Wow,

What happened to July, August, and September?

It seems like I blinked and they were gone.

Even though the time has been flying by I've managed to keep up the photography hobby and have actually gone out and purchased a new camera, the Canon EOS 40D.

I haven't had the time to keep the blog up to date, but I have been able to snap some pretty cool photos with the Cannon which can be viewed here at shutterpoint as well as here at 123RF another stock photo agency.

I'm trying to build up my portfolios at few additional sites as well, dreamstime and fotolio. Once I get a few more photos approved at these sites I'll start linking them here to the blog.

Do you upload a lot of pictures? To a lot of different locations/websites? Then check out Pixelpipe.

Pixelpipe’s a new service that uploads all your pictures to all your favorite sites at once. Here’s how it works:

Choose all the destinations you usually send photos to (like Blogger, Picasa, YouTube and nearly 50 other sites).
Add titles, tags, and captions to your chosen photos or videos.
Click upload, and relax while Pixelpipe send all of your photos to their various destinations.

The only downfall I see so far is that Myspace is not included. But there are a lot of others that might save some time.

Horizontal images can't be seen completely... I forgot that wordpress doesn't auto-resize... one of the things I liked from uber :(

Since uber might be stopping I'm going to blog here again, I'll try to keep this a bit more updated that I have done so far... :)

To start with I'll just copy my latest blog from uber:

Haven't updated the blog for too long, so here are a couple of the shots I've taken lately. Started to use Lightroom for the RAW processing in stead of Canon's Digital Photo Professional. Must say I quite like it so far, I tried using Apperture for a bit, but Lightroom looks much easier so far, besides doing some useful things such as noise reducion & sharpening by default when importing files.

Back to the photo's: starting with, from what I have processed so far, my favorite shot from the wedding I was assisting as 2nd / 3rd shooter / holding flash.

I've been reading quite some blogs via RSS lately, mostly street and wedding photographer's blogs, shots such as the two above have been inspired by photo's I've seen in said blogs. I would link them here now if I could remember what shot I saw were...

All this has been shot by the way on a Canon 5D with various lenses, no L stuff.
Having that said, what do you think about the colors & sharpness of the following shot!? I imported the RAW file to Lightroom and besides White balance, resizing and USM after the resize there have been no edits at all:

Here's another street one, I was practicing hip-shots one afternoon when, while walking back to the bus I got this one, the only one with the people I wanted in the frame (or at least more than only their feet)

Actually, I'm not sure if Severin had a photo of a person in front of a big ad or not, but I'll link it anyways, very worth reading if you haven't heard of it yet.

Behind Bars

Behind Bars was taken at the local zoo. The animals there are very well taken care of, but this is still one of the saddest pictures I ever took. What do you think?

Hanging on the line

Sadly I had to change the template of the blog because the commens were not visible enough. So with the new theme comes a new photo to kill.

This photo was taken with my new 70-300 lens. I saw this image that promissed to turn out nice but unfortunately it didn't. I did no post processing on it so maybe that's why but I can't be sure of what to improve on.

Do you think this picture deserves to be killed and buried or does it have some potential if processed right?

Here it is. This photo "Of the balcony" was taken in an old area that is now part of Jerusalem and is called Ein Carem.

The picture was taken with a "HP PhotoSmart C850" camera and had the following stats:
Exposure: 0.017 sec (833/50000)
Aperture: f/10.4
Focal Length: 52.2 mm
ISO Speed: 100

How to choose "the right" profile picture...

Something has been bothering me for months now, ever since I uploaded the 'friendly' and 'engaging' photo to your left. I thought I was above these sorts of superficialities, but, as it turns out, I'm not. You see, I was so sure "it" wouldn't bother me. Because, you see, I was so determined not to put up one of those can't-you-see-i'm-so-hot handheld, over-exposed digital pouts. You know the kind, with one hand suspiciously out of frame, the other resting saucily on a hip, the image dredged up from the wasteland of your camera's overflow. How many batteries are wasted for even one Myspace-styled glamour shot?

And yes, even I must confess, I took this pic myself (by making very creative use of my bathroom mirror). What makes a great profile shot? Personality. I want my readers to want to come and hang out with that smiling blond woman in the sidebar. Come on, how can you resist? She's looking right at you, hair all n.i.c.e., smiling engagingly (maybe even a bit cheekily), well articulated intellect sparkling in those baby blues, and all the while making sure you see that quaint little wedding ring on her finger. Ya sure, the perfect pic for what I'm going for. Except for one thing. One huge thing.

So here it is blogosphere, I can't keep "it" in any longer...

My nose is not that big! It is in no way, shape, or form, bulbous!

And thank you for tolerating this rather narcissistic post. So... how do you add a profile pic with real personality, but don't want to compromise on the snoz? Use an action shot! (See below)

So this is great...this post just graduated from "rather" to "completey" narcissistic. And my punishment? Having to stare at this new set of giant-bodybuilder-neck photos. Sigh. At least the nose is better. lol

Trying to find time...

The last two weeks have been an absolute nightmare. Things have gotten so crazy and I've found myself with very little time to do anything besides work at the computer.

Needless to say, I haven't been able to get out and spend any amount of time taking photos with my Olympus SP-560UZ but I hope to remedy that this weekend.

There has been an upside to the debacle that has been the last two weeks, it's given me some time to find a nice site called Imagekind that will allow folks to purchase greeting cards and various size prints of some of my photos along with frames and matting so they look like "proper" art.

I opted to sign up for the free account to try them out which provides 1 album for 24 photos or 200MB of space depending on the size of your images. So far I've only managed to upload a few photos, which can be found here.

Considering the limited amount of time I have today, I think I'll re-post me previous photo compilation and see if I can actually get out for a few more this evening. (Click thumbnail to enlarge.)

photosynth...

microsoft has let loose photosynth...

i know microsoft gets a lot of flack but for what they provide and interoperability and such... they actually do a good job ... note that this is coming form a guy that has his 7 month old playing on a kubuntu laptop already

well.. there was an episode of csi: ny where they used photosynth for 3D display from a group of pictures and you can see different points of view...

i tried uploading a batch and their servers are getting hammered so they have stopped accepting uploads for now.. but you get 20GB of space for free using your passport login

so if you collected all of the pictures from a tour group at some location, photosynth looks for similarities, points of view, aspect ratios, angles etc.. and generates a 3D world where you can float thru the pictures .. zoom in, look from another point of view, just cool stuff.

one of the original samples was of a palace in korea... so automatically, they had my attention and it was amazing that you got a wireframe of the whole complex, then were able to look around from different distances based on pictures that people had taken...

i have been waiting for them to release this for a while as i generally try to do the virtual tour type captures and have burst shot enabled on my camera... so it will be neat looking at some of the structures and beaches and stuff from vacations in 3D

Buying prints

After having some initial success selling some of my images and getting a lot of very positive feedback a friend of mine suggested that I try and sell prints of the images.

I did some some looking around and found a site called Imagekind that allows you to upload your images and sell them as different sized prints from as small as greeting cards all the way up through large wall sized prints depending on the size of the image you upload. There are alot of customization options for price setting and they also provide different buttons and banners to link to your art work. (See below...)

These are just a few of the options available, unfortunately my free wordpress blog doesn't support the other "flash" type scrolling banners, but if you have your own website they would make a nice addition.

I signed up for a free account last night and have already managed to pick up a few fans. There seems to be a nice community with a wide variety of different artists and would easily recommend them to anyone looking to get their feet wet selling their prints.

Free Photoshop Alternative

Adobe Photoshop is arguably the most popular image editing software in the world. It is a very mature and complete product. However, the down-side to the software is its price tag of around $500. This is out of the reach of most schools. I use an alternative in my computer lab called GNU Image Manipulation Program or "GIMP" for short. It has most of the features of Photoshop and it's free for anyone to use. You can download it at www.gimp.org. It runs on many platforms, so download the version for your particular operating system. GIMP runs on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. I teach a Photoshop class and one of my students used GIMP to do all the assignments because they wanted to work at home. The results and concepts were the same. Take some digital photos and give GIMP a try. There are some video tutorials on www.designyourownweb.com and Amazon sells book about the program. Let me know what you think.

Green Theme Photos...

It seems there's been a lot of interest lately in all things "green". I decided that I would make an effort to take a few "green" themed photos a couple of times a week as part of my regular hobby. The Olympus SP-560UZ makes this pretty easy with a ton of creative shooting options. My efforts to date can be seen below.(Click thumbnails to enlarge.)

These are hopefully the first of many "green" themed photos to appear on this site and if anyone would like to make a suggestion for future green photos I'd be more than happy to give it a "shot". (Pun intended :) )

Photos I've Sold...

The photography hobby is starting to pay dividends as I've managed to sell two of the photos I've taken with my new Olympus SP-560UZ.

In a previous post I'd indicated a bit of a dilemma between trying to shoot "stock" photos vs. shooting the photos first and considering the audience later. I opted for the shoot first method and it seems, at least for me to have been the route to go.

A few other fun facts to consider since opening a shutterpoint account...

Since I opened the the account on July 24th of this year I have uploaded 51 images which have received 1600 views with the most viewed being clicked 70 times.

The two photos above have been viewed 34 and 45 times respectively.

It's been a lot of fun seeing how many times my photos have been viewed and while getting ratings feedback and ideas on how to improve. I have no issues recommending Shutterpoint and their service to anyone. Sell your photos online
