day two of the jack-in-the-box. so far so good... but i still have quite a ways to go.
that's alright though, as i don't really have any idea of what to do next, subject-wise.
i'm thinking maybe it'll come to me in a dream or something.
i dunno.
anyway, jack's getting a break for the rest of the evening.
husband is home. :)

today i invested 4 whole hours on him.
doesn't he look happy about that?!

The images you see here, are part of a project I have yet to finish, involving large-scale prints (digital painting?), created from "averaging" the results of Google Image Search. I got a handful of successful results, and less not so successful. The images on my my Flickr account contain a few more of what I had working, and eventually, I aim to polish up these images, perhaps add the new data, and try to complete the series as a whole set of search terms.

The interesting part is the results that come back from whatever may be attached to the word, "paradise" for example, as many different kinds of images can be tagged with that word, but all may hold different meanings and reasons (vacation photos, hotel pamphlets, religious illustrations, etc.)

The challenge was working to make a cohesive "photograph" of a word, idea or phrase that wasn't entirely a garbled mess of abstract image data. It's too easy to just slam everything into one image area... it's more interesting to part through the fog, and pull something out of the layers - something new.

I have to sort of play a game with the words I chose, as the more conceptual the word, the more varied the results became, and that in turn, made it more difficult for me to make something from the compilation of imagery (ex: heaven, hell, color, love, symbol, abstract)

I don't normally work with or from photographs to do a digital painting. People tell me that this is a misguided and archaic attitude, but I would rather draw it myself after having seen it or imagined it than to smudge a photograph. Anyone surprised by that tidbit? I do occasionally see a photo that makes me want to change the photographer's vision and the reality that the camera recorded.

This digital work of the writer and sage, Joe Bageant, is an example of looking beyond the photograph to find a new interpretation. Joe's essays and other work can be found at http://www.joebageant.com/ . I describe him to my friends as a modern Henry Thoreau with more grit (and grits) in his soul.

Several months ago I started working on a digital painting of the Frankenstein Monster but I ended u

Several months ago I started working on a digital painting of the Frankenstein Monster but I ended up setting it aside to work on other projects. A couple days ago I decided I would take a stab at finishing it but discovered that the PSD file was corrupted. The file wouldn't open! I immediately checked all of my external hard drives hoping that the file was safe and sound on one of my backup drives. To my dismay all of the copies I had were corrupted. I was totally fucked. I didn't know if I should feel angry or depressed. I've lost files before, but this particular piece was showing some real promise and I was really happy with how the digital painting was progressing.

So I decided I would rebuild the Frankenstein Monster and make him bigger and better than before. I had a couple low resolution images of the piece in various stages of completion and I was able to use those images to begin the process of reconstructing the green beast. So far I'm pretty happy with how the second coming of the Frankenstein Monster is heading. It is always easier the second time around.

But this experience brings up a very important question about digital art and photography - How do you archive your digital files to ensure that your work will survive 100+ years of technological evolution? How do you ensure that your files will always be readable? Will you be able to open and edit a JPG file 100 years from now? Will there be a drive that can read a CD-ROM disk 100 years from now? Will digital art survive a nuclear holocaust? or will a single scratch erase all of history. Is the Mona Lisa the only thing that can survive the end of the world? Who knows.

Film and prints processed and stored in proper conditions have demonstrated the ability to remain virtually unchanged for 100+ years. Why not create film negatives / slides or prints of your digital images to help ensure the longevity of your digital artwork? That might be one solution.

Longing is a painting I have been working on for a couple of weeks. I have a meaning in mind behind this painting but I would rather the viewer see what they want to because it will mean something special to everyone that way. I can only say that this one is very special to me and it is set in a castle. I like showing emotion and basing painting subjects on words and feelings without always having to show a person to convey that.

The next painting I finished today is called Underground and it is based on a dream I had about being trapped in a post apocalyptic world. The poster is more like an abbreviated version of this dream and world.
