This blog/site is about the connection between Danish media and nationalism, xenophobia and especially islamophobia in Denmark. As the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) said in its Third Report on Denmark:
ECRI notes with deep concern that, as indicated above, the climate in Denmark has worsened since its second report and that there is a pervasive atmosphere of intolerance and xenophobia against refugees, asylum seekers, as well as minority groups in general and Muslims in particular. The media, together with politicians play a major role in creating this atmosphere.

Røpke (forthcoming) Can practice theory inspire studies of ICTs in everyday life? In Bräuchler, B. and J. Postill (eds) Theorising Media and Practice. Oxford and New York: Berghahn.

This chapter by Toke Haunstrup Christensen and Inge Røpke explores the practical uses of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the daily lives of Danish families through examples of practices such as shopping, 'holding things together', maintaining social networks, or 'killing time'. Taking issue with Reckwitz's (2002) depiction of individuals as the 'carriers' of practices, the authors stress the importance of social interaction. In most cases, they suggest, 'the successful performance of a practice depends on the active participation of several persons', for instance, when micro-coordinating a shared family dinner over several mobile phones. Whilst concurring with Shove and her associates (e.g. Shove and Pantzar 2005) on the need to overcome the neglect of materiality by practice theorists (such as Bourdieu, Giddens or de Certeau) they also point out that Shove et al, like Reckwitz, downplay social interaction. The chapter ends with some remarks on the challenges of using practice theory for the study of ICTs in everyday life, including the empirical difficulties of separating out one practice from another (e.g. shopping vs. 'holding things together'), or ascertaining whether a given activity belongs with more than one practice simultaneously.

I am a strong supporter of public transportation. While living in DC for three months, it astonishe

I am a strong supporter of public transportation. While living in DC for three months, it astonished me that 1) there were so many cars on the road and 2) that so many of them had only one passenger. Not only did this plethora of cars turn a four mile drive into 40 minute commute, thus decreasing my potential sleep, the plethora of cars helped ruin the environment. To add to my anger, everywhere along this commute were bus and Metro stops that people could have easily used, but no, everyone had to get in their car, clog the lanes, pollute the air, and make me rise at an ungodly hour.

To be frank, it is wasting time that makes me a big supporter of public transportation. The math is easy--you take all those people driving alone, put them on a bus/subway/monorail, and all of sudden, the roads are more open, thus easing commuting time and allowing people to sleep in longer, thus increasing the everyone's happiness. If you doubt me, look at Denmark, the happiest nation in the world, and obviously, as the following video shows, you can see how public transportation adds to the Danes' happiness.

Despite my proclamations of public transportation's benefits, I am ready to call it quits in one area--buses. More specifically, Megabus.

I have been using Boltbus frequently over the past few months to travel from here to there, but I had to try Megabus this weekend because Boltbus was sold out, and now I know (well, have a good hunch...okay, a vague hunch), as to why.

I showed up at 5:45pm, and there was Megabus, already to go for a 6 o'clock departure, or so I thought. Made it to the door, the driver examined my ticket and said, oh no, wrong bus, this bus is the 4:45pm bus. Okay, so it's a Friday in July, obviously the roads are busy, so I don't get upset. Oh no, that happens when I ask the driver if he knew when the 6 o'clock bus was showing up. I was met with a blank stare and told to call customer service.

In this great era of modern technology, where people are instantaneously connected through words, images, and videos, you mean to tell me that two buses cannot communicate on the eastern seaboard about their respective locations? Baloney.

So off I go, through the putrid summer heat to call customer service. After several minutes, I am finally talking to an operator, who tells me to call a different number, because he only handles the Midwest. I call the other number, he has to connect me to the dispatcher. Talk to the dispatcher, he gives me another dispatcher to call who handles the East Coast. 20 minutes later, while saying, "serenity now," over and over in my head, the dispatcher tells me my bus is, "oooohhh, I don't know....hmmmmm, maybe 20 minutes away? Or no, possibly 30, can't offer any guarantees!"

You may not offer guarantees, Megabus, but I can--no more Megabus for me. Serenity now indeed, especially when sought on NJ Transit.

This week in beer has been pretty good to me, I have discovered a couple more quality beers. Here is the run down:

Harboe: The sole reason I bought this beer was it was literally the cheapest beer available at the local føtex. Apart from the deposit on the can you can get one of these for $0.60 and despite this fact it is surprisingly solid beer.

Harboe Light: Spurned on by my success with Harboe origninal I bought a case of this beer. Big mistake! It contains roughly half of the alcohol, and even less of the flavor and body.

Fur Renaissance: Inspired by its stupid name I picked up one of these. Fur Renaissance is a really tasty dark amber sort of caramely tasting beer that I am definitely going to get more of.

Kozel Dark: Unremarkable dark Czech beer that is smooth, not too bitter, but not really worth drinking compared to some of the other beer I have tried.

Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbeir: Presumably it is the style of the beer but I found this beer to be too carbonated, slightly too bitter, and light in body. I take pride in the fact that I have brewed what I believe is a superior Hefeweizen myself.

Carlsberg Elephant: Described on the can as "ekstra stærk pilsner" or extra strong pilsner, it is easily the most bitter beer I have tried. I can't stand this stuff, but being that it comes in tall boy, is cheap, and contains 7.2% ABV it is hard to resist picking one up for the walk to the zoo... or wherever.

Slidhandsker

Gummihandsker

Gummihandsker består af to kategorier.

Brandhandsker

I've spent the last two weeks in Denmark, and I'll stay one more before going back to the Faroes again. This is the first time I see Denmark more as a place for vacation, than my home country. Maybe because my flight ticket says Faroe Islands-Denmark return, and not the other way round. And the last two weeks, I've traveled more around Denmark than I've ever done while living there

A few days ago, I visited the most beautiful place in Denmark I've ever seen. And that's a bit ridiculous, as I grew up not far away from that spot - how come I've never visited it? Anyway, the place is the island Møn, known for its 128m high, white cliffs and the forest Klinteskoven (the Cliff Forest).

And of course, I took some pics (a lot actually!) and here's some of them.

I like cheese, and I like bookshops. I also like a bit of classy fifties, sixties or seventies graph

I like cheese, and I like bookshops. I also like a bit of classy fifties, sixties or seventies graphic design. Finding a beautifully preserved promotional leaflet for Danish Cheese, presumably published some time in the early seventies, makes for an amusing highlight of a few hours volunteering in the Friends of Castle Acre Church Charity Bookshop.

Cheeses are like people. They have character or they have not. Tou must choose them carefully just as do a friend.

Cheese from the friendly land of Denmark has centuries of cheesemaking experience behind it. Modern Denmark has added scientific know-how and the last word in hygienic standards to produce fine quality cheeses. Danish cheeses make friends wherever they are served in countries as far apart as Britain, the United States and even in Japan.

Making good cheese takes several weeks before it reaches the degree of mellowness that appreciative customers demand. At every stage the Danish State Quality Control regulates the standards of quality, hygiene and purity required. The State Quality Control was set up in 1906, at the request of the the farmers themselves, using the symbol the Lurmark.

Danish cheeses are amongst the finest in the world, wholesome and satisfying, simple or sophisticated, to please every palate.

The very small text at the bottom left of the image above reads:

Issued by: Danish Agricultural Producers, 2/3 Conduit Street, London, WIR 0AT on behalf of the Danish Export Board.

These leaflet dropped out of a hardback cookery book of the same era that was donated today in a large bag of other books. The book has joined the growing selection of cook books in the back room, but I couldn't resist holding on to this charming little leaflet. Who would have thought there were so many cheeses made in Denmark?

As you can imagine, I just can't wait to try out the "Samsoe Sputnik".

Cut 6 oz. Samsoe in 3/4" cubes. Cut a slice from one end of an orange to make a firm base. Pierce the cheese cubes on a cocktail stick. Add a grape, cherry, mandarin segment or piece of pineapple to each cube. Push the other of the cocktail stick into the orange to form a decorated "sputnik".

The Friends of Castle Acre Church Charity Bookshop is open 10:00 - 16:00 every Saturday and public holiday, and is found at the eastern end of Castle Acre's high street in west Norfolk. Thousands of paperbacks and hardbacks already in stock, with no small number containing similarly delightful little historic documents between their pages.

Farmers say they are selling at a loss because a bumper crop and lack of storage facilities has led to a dramatic fall in prices.

They say a bumper potato crop has led to a huge surplus of more than 15,000 metric tones and there's not enough cold storage facilities in the state to preserve it for off-season sale when prices are better.

The price of potatoes has fallen across West Bengal this month by almost half - to around four to five rupees (12 US cents) a kilogram.

The farmers say they get only half that much - the rest is pocketed by middlemen who the government has so far failed to control.

Frustrated with the traditional norms of living within the Somali community, which to a large extent restricts open expression; this group of young men and women are now using music to break the barriers.

Earlier detection...better survival? Nah...it couldn't be that simple or our mighty elected officials wouldn't have to be forced to come up with universal health care. There's also an interactive map with the story.

Algeria, in contrast, is one of the worst places to be if you have cancer.

Those are just two of many conclusions from a worldwide study comparing survival rates in nearly 2 million cancer patients.

In general, people in North America, Western Europe and other developed countries do better than people from Africa, South America and Eastern Europe.

Add to the confusion the fact that Romania has some of the best agricultural land in Europe. Thanks to the weak dollar, importers are bringing in more and more high-end American vehicles, often ones that are no longer in production.

'Figuring in the Danish excise system, the dollar is valued at around 4.2 kroner,' said Ulrik Høyer of US Autocenter in Karlslunde, south of Copenhagen. 'That means we can sell the cars at prices that allow buyers to live out their boyhood dreams.'

Many of the American cars being purchased are already available on the European market. For example, the Chrysler Crossfire - built in Germany - would normally cost around 800,000 kroner new in Denmark. But imported from the US it has a sticker price of 550,000 kroner.

This is the slogan of one of the weeklies that have been the driving force behind the boycott campai

This is the slogan of one of the weeklies that have been the driving force behind the boycott campaign. Unfortunately they do not match their slogan.

By coincidence I came across their main story of today - and I couldn't believe my eyes when I read their headline:

"Danish government prevents Jesus' insult, defends offenders of Islam".

This was intriguing to me first of all because I had difficulties in seeing how the government would be able to do that and second because I had not heard anything about anything related to such an issue.

The story goes as follows:

COPENHAGEN- The Danish government recently withdrew products from the market bearing images depicting Jesus and Mary.

A number of industrialists, who defended the Danish cartoons demeaning the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), sought to prove that freedom in the west can also be applied to Christian symbols by producing sandals and shoes on which images defaming Jesus and Mary appear.

After protests from the Danish people the authorities pushed the producers to withdraw the products from the market. All the shoes and sandals disappeared from the market in only one day.

As a result the Muslim community in Denmark accused the government of having double standards and igniting racism and hatred in the country.

Muslim bodies decided to use this issue in filing a new lawsuit against the offenders of Islam.

The President of the Muslim Council in Denmark, Abelwahed Bederson, said the government has used the freedom of speech as a pretext to justify the publishing of the cartoons insulting the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).

Resources : FI 17.7.2008

Bearing in mind His Majesty's words about Journalism in Jordan "It seems that some of our journalists forgot what journalism is all about. It is about reading, researching and investing in pursuit of the truth; not sitting behind a desk, making up silly stories" I decided to do a bit of research myself.

There was nothing in today's papers or in the papers from this week. Mysterious! The article says that this happened "recently" and in the Arabic version of the article it says "a few days ago". Maybe I had missed out on something during the last months? Nope. Last year? Nope...2006 then? Eventually I found something. May 2003 - a little bit more than five years ago! I guess we all have our own personal definition of time and space - but please - give me a break...

What happened - according to my desk and paper research of Danish news within the last 30 minutes - was that a supermarket chain in May 2003 imported a batch of sandals with the picture of Jesus Christ printed on them. They made the sandals the offer of the week. In my country a particular type of sandals are called Jesus sandals - maybe these sandals was an allusion to that - I don't know - but these were cheap plastic ones.

Printing the picture of Jesus Christ on a pair of sandals was considered offensive by some Christians and there was for three days debate in the press about this issue. The criticism was led by a catholic priest and other Christians and among them a number of evangelic priests and bishops supported that point of view. A small Christian association decided to take the supermarket to court for Blasphemy. After three days the supermarket withdrew what was left of the stock from its outlets.

Since 2003 nothing really new on this issue in the papers nor on the internet when googled...So - the Jordanian weekly certainly had a story - It was a matter of fact that these sandals had been sold in 2003 and that they were withdrawn from the market in 2003! But there was a number of other issues from the Jordanian article that I could not find trace of.

First of all - nobody in 2003 made any allusion whatsoever as to the government being involved in this matter. And I think for good reason. Why and on what basis should the government act in a case like this? In the end it was a question of commercial calculation, pressure from some of the customers and - for the court case - legal procedures and not of politics or any other area of government responsibility. In my country the government is NOT omnipresent or omnipotent. I think somebody have to come to grips with that because that is the way it is. We as Danish citizens do not expect the government to come and solve all problems - and we don't expect - tough luck conspiracy theorists! - the Government to be behind all good or evil that takes place in our society. So not only is the headline dead wrong in my opinion but also the allusion that the Authorities should have pushed the producers to retract the sandals is way out of bounds.

Second - since this event took place in 2003 - long before anyone had thought about printing any cartoons which happened in September 2005 - it can hardly be seen as "a number of industrialists, who defended the Danish cartoons demeaning the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), sought to prove that freedom in the west can also be applied to Christian symbols by producing sandals and shoes on which images defaming Jesus and Mary appear". Did you notice the word "Sandals" - I guess we are talking about the same event - but probably some of us are seeing it through a time warp. What came first? Sandals or cartoons?

Third - I found no trace of this event being put in a Muslim - Christian context or of Muslims accusing the government of double standards and igniting racism and hatred in the country. None what so ever. These accusations arose from a part of the Danish Muslim community after the cartoons was printed in 2005 - but not in a way as this story wants us to believe. Nor could I find any trace of "Muslim bodies decided to use this issue in filing a new lawsuit". If the weekly only had stated its sources - then we could check up on it - but no - no sources. I think I know why.

Fourth - A prominent Danish Imam Abdul Wahid Pedersen is quoted for a statement as mentioned above. I am not able to verify whether this quote is correct or not but I tend to believe it is. But I also tend to believe to almost certainty that this quote must be a quote on the Cartoon issue and not on the Sandals - but the editor does not tell us. I doubt that the Editor has checked with Imam Pedersen whether this is the case or not. But if you read the Arabic version of the article it seems that Imam Pedersen is quoted much more extensively and within quotation signs - so I hope that the editor has checked with him and I hope Imam Pedersen knows in what context he is being quoted.

Fifth - You have to ask yourself why such a breaking news story is being manipulated and published at this point in time? One might suspect that someone has a not so hidden agenda about harming relations between Danes and other people? Or maybe to stir up emotions between people of different faith? Unprofessional journalism? Sensationalism? Advancing a local agenda without relation to Denmark? It could of course also be that the journalist has been misled by some evil persons conspiring against his profession or paper. Who knows - I don't. I am seeking answers and they don't seem so obvious. Please enlighten me.

I beg that someone will prove my research wrong - I am no journalist - but if my reading of this is correct then I have to echo a very important Jordanian voice in saying that the difference between a lie and the truth is very simple - proof. Or at least credible sources when it comes to journalism.

I had intended to write a little "see you later" blog entry since I am preparing for vacation. This will reduce my blogging capabilities - no network - for some time. But on the other hand - how will I be able to survive without my daily doses of myths and misconceptions and not least conspiracy theories? So I guess I will check in from time to time. As I have stated on previous occasions - a select group of you bloggers are providing Jordan with some of the most accurate information and best analysis there is.

Oohhh - I forgot to tell you - It turned out that the picture on the sandals was not Jesus Christ but Judas Thaddaeus the Apostle. That fact made one of the most outspoken critical Bishops say that the issue had become rather ludicrous. I don't think the issue ever went to court for the same reason.

P.s. A note on sources. There is no links to the Danish papers because not much is stored electronically from 2003. I will see if I can provide you with some links later. But for those interested the daily newspaper Berlingske Tidende published a summery of the debate on page 7 the 15th of May 2003 .

P.p.s. I managed to find a link on BBC here and another one in English here.
