Will Hayes is in the midst of a divorce, and his 11-year-old daughter Maya wants to understand what went wrong with her parents’ relationship. She begs her father to tell her the entire story of how he met her mother. Will agrees, but changes the names of everyone involved, leaving it up to Maya to find out who in the story is her mother. Will begins his tale, weaving a romantic and amusing maze of missed connections and bad timing with the likes of three beautiful women: Summer, April, and Emily. Will bounces from relationship to relationship, misunderstandings and confusion thwarting him every step of the way. Who will he end up with? Which woman is ultimately right for him? The film keeps Maya and the viewer guessing right until the very end, with a bittersweet but ultimately triumphant surprise twist tying it all together..

Me and my friends understand the future
I see the strings that control the systems
I can do anything with no assistance
Cuz I can lead a nation with a microphone

I woke up today hoping I would feel something again. I didn't. I didn't feel shit. Instead, I looked at myself in the mirror and hated the stranger I have become. I balled my fist and wanted nothing more than to bash it. It reminded me of a dresser my maternal grandmother had. My cousin and I used to pretend it was a dog house when we were kids and we played what we unimaginatively called "Dogs." When things got bad, however, I'd spend a lot of time hiding there. Now I wish my adult body could curl up in between the spaces that made the legs of the dresser and pretend I never existed in this world.

I should be happy, right? I should count my blessings. I should be a lot of things, but I'm not. I'm, in fact, the complete opposite. I don't know if the complications are real, or if I'm just imagining them because I refuse to allow myself to be fully happy, as if I'm trying to complete mypenance for all the sins I've done against others.

I'm not sure, but suddenly I have this connection with the movie Definitely, Maybe sans the daughter.

Will: Why are you so concerned with all of this?
Maya: 'Cause I want you to be happy.
Will: I'm happy.
Maya: Trust me Dad, you're not happy.

Today was fairly standard, as far as my life goes, that is to say, until MY HUBBY CAME BACK! Back fr

Today was fairly standard, as far as my life goes, that is to say, until MY HUBBY CAME BACK! Back from the Big Apple, and even more stylish to boot! We hung out for a while before work with Eleni as well, then I had to go get my retail on. Work was great, actually; it was busy so I had plenty to do, and the customers were very social and amusing. I watched Definitely, Maybe with my mom this morning, oh, and the ladies and I dropped by Elgin Sports to see Colin.

Speaking of the boy, this entire relationship feels like it's been doused with ice-cold water. I am generally indifferent towards him, whereas he's willing to take days off just to spend time with me (though I suspect that might be, in part, because of the sex that is to follow); part of me feels that I should be making more of an effort (the heart, I guess), but another, larger, part (hello, brain) tells me that it's not worth it and we're just not that great a couple. I happened to tune in to the radio just as Everything You Want by Vertical Horizon came on, and a few of the lines in the chorus summed up everything quite nicely.

I say all the right things at exactly the right time,

but I mean nothing to you, and you don't know why.

He's sweet, funny, a bit nerdy, SO good to me, but for some reason, I feel nothing more for him than just a friendly attraction. He seems to be in love with me, and I just don't know what to do...

I don't want to dwell on this any longer as my mind is already cluttered with zillions of things: the upcoming school year, friends, the awkward hangout with the dude who worked a shift with me, who asked me out (I made sure he knew I had a boyfriend and that it will be on friendly terms, but still), failing at being a good daughter, etc., etc. Without further ado, I bring you a review of Definitely, Maybe:

DEFINITELY, MAYBE [2008]

Ryan Reynolds, Abigail Breslin, Rachel Weisz, Isla Fisher

I love Ryan Reynolds. He was in this movie. Enter the transitive property...and you get: I loved this movie. Thing is, this falls into the category of most romantic comedies; aww-inducing, sort of morally charged, but you're not going to remember it this time next month. Well, this one might be at the forefront of my memory for a wee bit longer, but that's the general gist of it. The one thing that Definitely, Maybe brought to the table, was the suggestion that not everything comes up roses in the dating and relationship world; people divorce, hearts are broken, shit happens...but as gloriously un-fairytale-like it was for the most part, the ending was just pretty much 'greetings, I am the cliched ending the entire world expected.
Be mildly excited!' I mean, I'm not going to say I didn't like it, because I am a giant sap (don't tell anyone that), but having something unexpected happen (read: realistic ending) would have made this a bit more of a memorable movie. I don't know. This is why I went to watch In Bruges after, but didn't have time to finish it, alas. I'll get on that.

I won’t lie, I’ve enjoyed many a romantic comedy in my time, a few months back for exam

I won't lie, I've enjoyed many a romantic comedy in my time, a few months back for example I watched Serendipity and thought it was pretty clever, but it's not as if I go out of my way to watch the latest "rom com" with Matthew Mc-however you spell his last name and Kate Hudson. So when previews for Definitely, Maybe started popping-up I was intrigued because this was one of the first movies of the genre that I was actually interested in beyond "That would be fun to watch on TV when I'm bored out of my mind."

Much of this probably had to do with 2 things: one, Ryan Reynolds is in the movie (and I still think the best role he ever had was the Harold and Kumar cameo), and two, from the trailer it didn't seem like the movie followed the tired convention of guy meets girl, guy falls in love with girl, guy sleeps with girl's best friend/burns down her house/ruins her career/says something really, really, really, mean (maybe not to those extremes but you get it), then makes sweeping gesture and wins her back.

The basic premise is this, William Hayes (Reynolds) is a succesful advertising executive working on children's cereal brands, he has a nine or so year old daughter (Abigail Breslin) and is currently going through a divorce with his wife. You never actually see his wife (or know who she really is) until the last fourth of the movie, and that's where the trickery of this movie comes into play.

Hayes's daughter wants to know the story of how her father and mother met, in hopes that they will reconnect somehow and stay together. From there on out the majority of the movie is shown through a flashback of Hayes's days after college, as he starts making a life for himself in New York City on the campaign trail of Bill Clinton in '92.

The movie makes a lot of jabs at the funny times that were the early ninteties, from lack of cell phones and internet, to actually showing a hilarious clip of George Bush back in the day. William Hayes's had three serious love interests during the period before having a daughter, there was his college sweetheart Emily (Elizabeth Banks), fellow ambitious workaholic Summer Hartley (Rachel Weisz), and mix between a slacker and cliche "freespirit" April Hoffman (Isla Fisher).

Throughout the story each relationship is examined, and small snaps back to reality give insight to the opinions of Hayes's daughter on the situation. This helps the movie a lot I think, because right before you get too caught up in a plot line or thinking you definitely know who he'll end up with, the daughter will have some key piece of evidence, or more likely will give her own classic juvenille opinion ("If she's my mom, I'm running away to Canada! I am not kidding!"). This keeps you on your toes, realizing you probably don't actually know who the mother is, since by the end of the second third of the movie, you come to expect that anything will happen and you won't be surprised if it ended up being anyone in particular. That said, for a nine or ten year old his daughter Maya seems a bit too smart, no offense to the genius 9 year olds out there, but I would think that after hearing about twenty minutes of her father's detailed past, she would just get bored and most likely save the question for another day. However, her interest is everlasting, which by the end of the film makes her less of his daughter and more of some sort of third party sorting out his love life for him.

Going back to the structure of a typical romantic comedy though, Definitely, Maybe may seem to at first break free from the chains of past film's ingrained layout, but upon closer inspection, it just cleverly hides it. I guess there is something to be said about how this love found, lost, and found again formula is endearing and timeless, but after so many years and films, something has to change. This movie doesn't necessarily change it, but camoflouges it enough so you think it's different until you look back. If you break the movie down to it's most basic elements then you can easily pick this traditional plot progression out, but what makes this movie interesting is that it constantly throws new situations and events at so that you can't really take in the larger scheme while watching.

Perhaps that's why I enjoyed the film so much, it was simply a cleverly constructed story out of the ordinary mold. It's sad then that, while the movie is perfectly cast, the characters aren't always so believable and some of the performances aren't the greatest. Rachel Weisz seemed inconsistent between the first and second half of the movie, and I never really understood her relationship with the other guy in her life. Elizabeth Banks seems to just give a generic performance, and that could be because her character is pretty boring. Isla Fisher's character was the most consistent throughout, but had weird lapses where she would do something that you wouldn't expect from the character you've been seeing, or simply contradict the perception of her you had earlier on. It gives the movie an aura of undevelopment, and almost shallow inhabitants. I guess you could say that since it's a flashback you only see the aspects of the characters that William Hayes remembers, plus with pretty much four main characters all vying for screentime and interaction, stuff will get lost in the mix. But with the limited time each of the female characters has, they do enough to be a good counterpart to Ryan Reynolds's performance. Unlike other films where he never really had to exhibit emotional or mental confusion (Amityville Horror does not count), Reynolds gives a genuine performance in which you can see the character's own anguish and bewilderment at the situation he's in, instead overplaying any of the feelings he has, he instead acts like a real person would in that situation.

The movie itself is a fair longer than your average picture, clocking in at almost two hours, but it never feels like it really drags (maybe a little during the middle of the second half), but instead feels like all the pieces of the puzzle are finally coming together, or falling apart however you want to look at it.

I recommend this movie a lot, especially if you're in the mood for something different. Not to sound cliche (which in itself is cliche) but this movie is pretty much the textbook definition of being more than the sum of its parts.

9/10

A rom com to watch,

Kind of long but very good.

Go watch it right now!

It was in the 90s today, but that didn't stop me from turning my space heater on full blast at work and sipping hot chocolate this afternoon. My office building has a very "unique" HVAC system, unique being the nice word. If I'm comfortable, the people upstairs are hot and if I'm cold, the people upstairs are comfortable. No one wins and the space heater remains popular throughout the year. Even during a hot-hot-hot Carolina summer.

I did have an awesome weekend as far as freebies go. First up is this Collier's Encylopedia Set from 1955. Like my mother asked when I told her about it yesterday, I'm sure you're wondering what in the world I want with 26+ volumes of an outdated (and outmoded) encylopedia. If memory serves me correctly, the encyclopedia we had as a kid (which I read quite often) was chock full of cool illustrations and maps. And that was in 1992. Imagine how much cooler a vintage set is! So, I posted my "encyclopedia wanted" ad on Freecycle and within the week, was picking it up from a nice lady about 10 miles from our home. Easy peasy. I spent the whole weekend watching movies (The Other Boleyn Girl, Definitely Maybe, The Kite Runner) and cutting pages out of the books with my Exacto knife. Cutting out what I want and then ditching the set will make my hubby, who asked "WHERE are you going to put all of those?!?", happy.

I also dropped by and took a gander at the wares at The Share Shop, which is a free "store" for seminary families to donate stuff and claim items that other's have donated. I scored some pretty good (free) stuff, including:

A breadmaker

An espresso maker (For Matthew)

A pair of authentic Fire King Jadeite coffee mugs
(Which Matthew made me prove to him that they were actually colletibles. Thank you Google.)

A set of glass storage containers

I've wanted to toss as many of our plastic storage containers for awhile now since the plastics creep me out, carcinogenically speaking. Glass storage containers are expensive, so I snatched these two up as soon as I saw them.

I also picked up a purse to sling over my shoulders when I go to the Farmers Market so I have free hands, a pair of brown leather sandals, a ton of really good gift bags, batting, a few cookbooks and a bunch of cardstock. Matthew was happy to help me unload it all when he saw the espresso maker. Actually, he left me with everything but the espresso maker, which he started rubbing like Gollum with the ring. I'll let you know if he starts calling it his precious.

I’ve been thinking about freedom lately, and what it means to be free. Brooke and I have talk

I've been thinking about freedom lately, and what it means to be free. Brooke and I have talked about this some and we've discussed what society means when it uses the word "freedom." For example, we were watching the movie Definitely, Maybe last night and there was a quick line about freedom. Being a romantic comedy, of course, this line was about marriage taking your freedom: when you get married you give up your freedom.

In one sense this is true. Being married means that I can't (or don't) make brash decisions. I don't decide at the last minute to leave for the weekend on a hiking trip; I don't blast music when Brooke is trying to sleep; I spend money a little differently -- more goes to a house and to clothes than it did when I was single.

But honestly, these are pretty shallow freedoms. Basically, being married means that I don't always act on my first impulse all the time -- like if I want to go camping I ask Brooke what works for her, rather than packing the car. Either way, I still get to go camping. If I think we should spend our money differently, we talk about it. But, for anyone who knows me, you know that I already have more access to money being married to Brooke than I ever did on my own, and it's good to take care of the house and wear clothes that don't make you look like you're homeless. I still get time alone, I still get time with friends, I'm going back to school with the help of my wife (another thing much harder to do on my own) -- I have trouble thinking of any real freedom that I have given up by marrying Brooke.

On the other hand, I've gained freedom. Sure, I may wait another weekend to go camping, but I have gained unconditional love and relationship. Brooke and I were talking last night about how simply being in a relationship of unconditional love, it has freed us from insecurities and fears. I'm not as self-conscious as I used to be: I'm now loved unconditionally. I can completely be at ease and myself with this person. Even more, in some way I am more of myself than I was when I was single: I have someone to laugh with, to challenge me, to encourage and support me, to simply be with me. All of those things help me become more of who I really am. Brooke doing this to me, and me being able to laugh with, challenge, encourage and support her are incredibly freeing actions.

Just some thoughts on freedom today -- and what freedom really means. Not everyone needs marriage to find this freedom, but I do believe everyone needs to find unconditional love to find greater freedom. Everyone needs to be in a relationship of unconditional love. Because more than simply listening to the latest impulse, unconditional love loosens the chains of self-doubt and self-consciousness to allow me to be who I really am. And that is freedom at its deepest.

I hate most rom-coms (um, romantic comedies-yeah) My house-mate loves them and put on Fool's Gold recently. I gave it twenty minutes and could stomach no more. Most are bland, predictable and written for 11 year olds. The quirky cast of supporting characters, the lame physical comedy, the same upbeat strings on the soundtrack, the break-up, misunderstandings, new partners followed by jealousy, the dash for the airport. This genre is the most formulaic in all of Hollywood. The only films that can beat them for mindless entertainment would be anything starring a Van Damme or a Seagal. However, sometimes, we need good old fashioned mind numbing, don't we? After a long day at work we can plonk ourselves in our fave chair, press play and expect happy endings and pretty people to wash over us for the next 90 minutes. I just try not to make a habit out of it. I will say though, I loved The Notebook (perhaps the only film that guys can admit they cried to) and adored Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise and Before Sunset films. I didn't expect much with this latest Ryan Reynolds vehicle, though he was in Blade: Trinity and was the forerunner for Wally West in The Flash film, so he's got geek cred in my book.

The premise is this: Ryan is getting divorced from his daughter's (Abigail Breslin) mother and tells her the story of the three most important romances in his life, leaving her to guess which one is her Mum, with the choices being Rachel Weisz, Elizabeth Banks and my fellow Aussie, Isla Fisher. Well written and directed by Albert Brooks, the film gives you enough reasons to like each of the three female leads and also enough reason to want the final outcome to not be them. It's a delicate balancing act with a few surprises thrown in. All the characters are fully developed, with intelligent engaging dialogue, rather than the usual fluff that spout forth from rom-com leads. Fisher is the highlight of the cast. She just can't seem to turn off the cutesy charm no matter what role she's in. The final scenes offer nice icing on the cake. I stayed through the whole film, so that's high praise indeed. It only ventures toward typical territory of this genre in two early scenes involving slow clapping and rowdy singing, but it isn't a comedy as such, more of a drama. The flashbacks will be a nice bonus for Gen Xers too, with familiar 90s staples such as brick mobile phones, Cobain and Clinton. Definitely, Maybe is a nice breath of fresh, minty air in a crowded shelf of feel-good movies.

Pick of the Week:

King of Kong - One of the best, or at least most entertaining documentaries of last year, this chronicle of the battle between the two best Donkey Kong players in the world, Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell, is a titanic struggle between good and evil. Mitchell comes out as a coniving and cowardly villain and Wiebe a lovable sad-sack and it's their stark differences that create this Shakespearean battle. Well worth a watch even if you couldn't care less about Donkey Kong.

Also Out:

Jumper - The pretty awful looking Doug Liman vehicle which I mentioned in the Region 1 picks briefly last week. It's saved for me by Rachel Bilson being in it but from what I gather from reliable source Tom, this is just headache-inducing SFX foolishness.
Peep Show: Season 5 - Still probably the most consistently strong sitcom on British television behind The Mighty Boosh, this one proves further proof that Mitchell and Webb are great performers when someone else writes their material.
Californication: Season 1 - I've written about this a couple of times on the site and why not? It's foul-mouthed, dirty fun but occasionally manages to side-step the limitations of its sex-comedy roots to provide some really sweet moments of pathos to go along with the ride.
Definitely Maybe - I'm yet to see this but a guy I work with who is a notorious misanthrope who said this was a very passable romantic comedy which translated means that this is some sort of rom-com genius.
WAZ: Extreme Sleeve Edition - I honestly couldn't care much less about this terrible looking film but what the hell is an Extreme Sleeve?
Semi-Pro - Will Ferrell tries to be Ron Burgundy as a basketball player and Woody Harrelson sucks the life out of the comedy by acting like he's in a serious, Ron Shelton-without-the-comedy sports movie. Half funny, half depressingly awful.
Mouth to Mouth - Another early Ellen Page curio in which she goes all GI Jane with the hair playing a young girl seduced by a cult. It look vaguely interesting.

[wiki] [IMDB]

I'm going to try to leave out my biased non homosexual mancrush on Ryan Reynolds out of this review, but to put it simply: this movie is awesome.

It is actually! Its like a movie version of the show How I Met Your Mother [wiki][IMDB], which I mentioned in an earlier post. The story is that Ryan Reynold's character, who is currently in the process of getting divorced, is nagged by his daughter into telling him the story of how he met her mother. He puts a spin on it by telling her the story, but changing all the names of the women in it so that the daughter can't tell who the mother will be.

Its a movie that spans many years (all flashbacks) that leaves you feeling like years have passed since you stepped into the theater and not in a bad way; it just takes you deep into the story and you feel like you grow up as much as the main character does. I don't want to spoil the ending for anyone who will see the movie on dvd, but it doesn't have a fairy tail ending, which is refreshing. Its a good movie that does a bang up job in making you feel good at the end. I definitely walked out feeling like the world had possibilities and the road we choose to walk down actually has meaning. Regardless of my pseudo insight in the last sentence- go see the movie. Its good.

Ryan Reynolds also is my hero for marrying Scarlett Johanson. He also has a 6 pack.

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0832266/

This review contains minor spoilers.

Since one film about Ryan Reynolds as a father was clearly not enough, I sat down and watched a second. Not to mention the "From the creators of Notting Hill and Love Actually" plastered on the cover - the latter of which is among my favorite romantic comedies. And to top it all off it has three gorgeous and hilarious female actors - Rachel Weisz is not normally a funny actor but she was surprisingly so in this film - which, while not enough to carry a film, sure helps to make it enjoyable.

The plot is extremely reminiscent of the tv show "How I Met Your Mother" which is one of the few shows I enjoy watching - mainly for Neal Patrick Harris who is amazing - but at least this time the mom is there from the beginning, it's just a matter of figuring out which girl is the one. It's an interesting concept, albeit not too intriguing. I had figured it figured out part way through - but the ending still somewhat surprised me. I wouldn't say it was the best ending; I enjoyed it but it felt both paced too fast and perhaps too improbable. I thought the characters acted too different at the end from how they acted throughout the rest of the film.

That's not a fault so much of the actors as it is of the producers who probably pushed for a more commercial ending than what the writers originally had in mind - which is of course all speculation, and it is entirely possible that the writers always had this ending written. Apart from the enjoyable but slightly off ending, the rest of the film had some pretty entertaining writing. There were no ab-killing jokes, but that would have ruined the more dramatic moments, and overall it was more one long situationally funny film which sort of builds up without going anywhere. It doesn't sound that appealing but it was entertaining.

While the story was enjoyable but not amazing, and the direction and camera work nothing special, the actors were what I enjoyed most. Not necessarily the acting itself but the actors in general. I have always liked Ryan Reynolds and he's good in his typical way here. As was Abigail Breslin who I'm more indifferent to but theres no doubt she has talent. The three ladies were all great - I've always enjoyed Isla Fisher since I saw her in Wedding Crashers, and as much as I hated Hot Rod, I laughed at her jokes - and they all brought something different, but the surprise of this film was Kevin Kline. His role was not huge but every scene he had was hilarious and I would find myself chuckling even when there was no joke.

So I enjoyed the movie, it was not a best for any of the actors but it was entertaining. I would recommend it if you like a dramatic romantic comedy (which is an odd genre, and I'm not entirely true it exists but it felt the most fitting) and especially if you enjoy the actors since they would be the main reason for seeing this film.

“Dad, I can’t believe you drank… and smoked… and was such a slut… But

"Dad, I can't believe you drank... and smoked... and was such a slut... But I still love you."

Formulaic and contrived, yet heart-warming and mould breaking, it is especially hard not to like “Definitely, Maybe,” a romantic comedy that actually manages to redeem the pathetic excuse of genre in my mind. Romantic comedies are usually weak rehashes of themes and plot devices used so many times before that it is painful just thinking about them. But this film by Adam Brooks (“Wimbledon,” “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason”) has enough emotional resonance and intelligence, stemming from a maturity completely unnatural for the genre, that wraps up its manoeuvring through waters of uneven predictability and a set-up filled with amusing twists and turns, that keep the viewer on their toes, neatly and satisfactorily at the end.

Beginning near the end of a series of many stories, all involving Will (Ryan Reynolds), if the film’s premise does not grab you, the rest of the film will be tedious for you. Will is a thirty-something advertising executive living in the Big Apple, on the cusp of finalising, literally, one of his biggest acquisitions to date, the end of his marriage. To whom, we are not certain. This unknown woman is the mother of Maya (Abigail Breslin), whom Will shares custody with. Maya, having just received her first sexual-education lesson in school, is full of questions parents dread, and being particularly distressed by the likelihood of her parents' divorcing, she begs Will to tell her the story of how he met and fell in love with her mother. Naturally reluctant at first, Will eventually caves and agrees to tell her the story, but he will change all the names of those involved and she will have to guess which one is her mother. “It’s like a love story mystery,” Maya says, and she has the upper hand, compared to the audience, in figuring out whose who in Will’s flashback tale of heartbreak and man “slutdom,” not an actual word – they’re still coming up with a male word for slut, at least she is taking notes.

Will’s story focuses on three equally gorgeous but very different women. Emily (Elizabeth Banks) was Will’s college sweetheart in Wisconsin, whom he had to leave behind when his dreams got the better of him and he moved to New York in 1992 to help with Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign. Emily is the good girl, and Will promises he will honour their fidelity. While in New York, Will is asked to give Summer (Rachel Weisz) a package from Emily, who is having a curious affair with a dissipated author Hampton Roth (Kevin Kline), a man who tells Summer to give in to her every curiosity. Then there is Will’s co-worker in the campaign, Xerox-girl April (Isla Fisher), a woman wise beyond her years, independent and smart, who uses wisecracks to make it out like she is all for the fun and not the commitment. Isla Fisher’s character is by far the most developed female character, followed by Weisz’s and then Banks’, but when comparing their various character developments with the time their characters spend onscreen, it is justified.

Will’s romantic ups and downs are cleverly weaved around those of his career, as well as the public standing of Bill Clinton himself, all in yet another alluring evocation of a rom-com styled NYC . Over the course of these various relationships, Will grows emotionally but at the cost of his youthful outlook in terms of love and relationships. That is where Breslin’s character comes in, bringing that sense of juvenile, naïve, approach to love and warm and gooey conclusions that are oh-so-satisfying, even if they do not always work out in reality, it is cinema after all. Instead of always being the guy surreptitiously lurking in the midst of his relationships, professionally and romantically, Maya urges Will to write his own happy ending, or at least, manufacture his own happiness. Easier said than done.

In most romantic comedies, men are given the back seat, and that is why woman are the genre’s target audience, but the bittersweet “Definitely, Maybe” has a lead character most men can relate to, and all the romantic turmoil that some woman love. Will is a strong male character who is not stereotypical man-candy or a useless layabout but rather a young man who is still very much journeying into manhood and is given the push he needs to embrace the point in his life where he needs to be by reliving his journey to the exact point he currently is at when the film opens – with the significant help of three complex women and one little girl.

Ryan Reynolds displays a certain level of evolvement into maturity himself, but ultimately does not have the acting range to pull off an emotional exploration of a multifaceted character, even though he does a satisfactory job that could have been better. Luckily, just like the character he plays, his instability, if you will, is balanced by three terrific performances by his female cast members. Isla Fisher steals the show and the hearts, and minds, of the audience, and watching her perform evokes such a strong image of someone blooming into a fully-fledged star. If she was onscreen the entire time, just her talking with Reynolds, in the charming and witty way their characters do, for the entirety of the film’s running time, I think it would be just as good as the film already is. The scenes in between the flashbacks, where Maya usually questions something in her dad’s story, are somewhat annoying and mess up the rhythm of the rest of the film, but that is because of the heavy-handedness of the setup. Charming and detailed performances make it worthwhile though.

While it is a standalone film, one that does not really fit into the mould of a romantic comedy in the fact that it explores so much more than it needs to, it is not always consistent in maintaining the initial perkiness of the premise. Its addition of plot points that are often confusing and easy to misunderstand asks quite a lot of its audience, more than one would expect anyway. Perhaps that is its charm, and charm it does. Is the film better than most recent romantic comedies? Definitely. Is one guaranteed time well spent? Maybe. Will I remember the film come tomorrow? Let me think about it.

 Zij: Dad, what's a threesome?
Hij: That's a game... Adults play sometimes... When they're bored...
*stilte
Zij: Whatever.

@ Timo: gelukkige verjaardag!

2. Definitely, maybe
Spre deosebire de predecesorul sau, la acest film putem gasi lucruri pentru care merita vazut...pe bune...asta daca caut scuze...am vazut trailerul acum vreo doua luni, mi-a placut si de atunci tot astept sa vad filmul...da' m-au prostit rau de tot cu trailerul ala...se vrea a fi tot o comedie...de data asta cu grave accente romantice...in mare reuseste, desi nu este deloc foarte amuzant, romantismul insa apare in fiecare cadru (poate d-asta nu m-a impresionat pe mine, se poate sa ma fi pierdut din causa mirosului pres siropos)...este totusi lung si pe alocuri plictisitor...dar, merita vazut pentru ca: * in el apare o pustoaica absolut geniala ( pe numele ei abigail breslin pe care am avut placere sa o remarcam in little miss sunshine)...motivu' 2 se cheama derek luke, un actor care mie imi place foarte mult de cand l-am descoperit in antwone fiscer, un film genial (ca sa-l vad apoi in friday night lights-filmul si in glory road)...aici din pacate face un rol mai neimportant, dar asta nu inseamna ca nu m-am bucurat sa-l revad...motivul 3,definitia nonconformista pentru threesome ( a game that people play...when they are bored :) )...mda...si mai e un motiv...vreo trei fete, fiecare frumoasa in felul ei...e de ajuns? iata si trailerul:
