Oh my god, the amount of crap you accumulate for a wedding is unbelievable. Where do I put it all? And the gifts have not even started coming.

So yesterday we went to Dutch Farm Nursery in Fredrick, MD. They had tons of exotic plants which was what I'm looking for. I got:

5 ferns

A kick ass scarlet coleus plant

A few Hens & Chicks

2 bags of sand

Succulent fertilizer

A bag of soil

This means I actually have to make those 10 terrariums. *gulp*

Here's inspiration I have been collecting for, oh, a year.

10 July 2008
What a day. By the time I got home, I just wanted it to be over. I didn't want to do anything else, much less try to compose a photo. So, I got out my trusty little Canon Powershot SD850IS and took a few photos of...things. This is one of them:

I only vaguely remember what it is, and can't tell from the photo. Maybe one of you can?
Cheers.

9 July 2008
Late in the day I took the short walk from my desk to my boss's office for some reason or another. Now, my boss bleeds burnt orange. He is a died-in-the-wool, sometimes to his detriment, University of Texas fan. He graduated from that fine institution and has earned his passion for the school. As such, his office is decorated with bits & peices of UT, including his windows - proclaiming to the world outside that inside this office sits a proud Longhorn fan. On these bright, sunny, hot Texas days, he keeps his blinds drawn, which enabled this photo:

Baby Boy Zurcher's room is officially complete. I think we'll add a shelf or two but the room can be considered complete at this point. I really like how it turned out - pretty simple but really nice. My mom helped with the curtain and crib skirt. We used so very little of A's bedding that we opted to not buy a full set this time.

Anyway, I think it looks great and I love it. Good thing, I'm pretty sure that b won't be painting the room again anytime in the next 10 years.

Thinly slice blood orange (you can substitute a regular orange); add to skillet, arranging in a single layer. Reduce the heat to medium-low and barely simmer until the white pith of the orange becomes translucent, turning the slices occasionally, about 40 minutes. Allow the orange slices to cool in the syrup, turning occasionally. Arrange the slices atop the tart and drizzle with some of the syrup just before serving.

What has furniture to do with art - you might ask? A lot - is my answer.
Designing your own furnitur

What has furniture to do with art - you might ask? A lot - is my answer.

Designing your own furniture, the choice of the material, the working process and practical application helps a lot regarding control and understanding of your creative process. While you create something so trite (such as furniture :D and test it by using it you will gain not only a lot of technical knowledge (learning by doing) but you will understand much quicker how design, composition, colour, materials can work together to build the perfect unit no matter what you create.

I think the following ensemble is something special and you won't find it anywhere (of course not - because it's an original) in a designer shop. But I want to give you an idea what I am talking about.

I also want to show that art and creative processes can very well go hand in hand with crafts and that the differentiation is fluent. There is no need to top one above the other.

First I created 2 different chairs which were originally meant as decoration rather than for usage - you will soon realize why.

pic 1

In the meanwhile they ARE USED especially when we do not want a visitor to stay too long  . These chairs are literally a pain in the a.. i.e. simply so uncomfortable that you'll get a sore b... after sitting on them for some time but I wanted them exactly to look like that, being reminiscent of the traditional Chinese chairs in the last centuries. I was simply fascinated by that kind of style and wanted to incorporate it into my own work.

In fact in the China of the mandarins the chairs actually were made like this, with that very straight back, in order to force people to sit very upright. It was a part of the etiquette (of the court and noble families) to sit very upright and not with a hunchback - as today - like Quasimodo, the bell ringer of Notre Dame. Feeling comfortable was absolutely dispensable.

.

.

pic 2

As you can see I chose pine wood again for the chairs. A wood that is quite robust and very well applicable for furniture and not so expensive. I was used to carving pine wood in the meanwhile and I loved the fine grain.

As I do not own a turning lathe I bought the legs readily made instead - I only shortened them. The back of this chair was mounted on top of the seat piece and the 2 little triangles were meant for stabilizing the construction i.e. the back from falling off the seat, otherwise this would have been a bit over-exaggerating the treatment of unwelcome guests - wouldn't it? No - earnestly - I wanted the chairs to be as sturdy as possible of course.

.

.

pic 3

pic 4

I read last time the beautiful post of Béatrice Peltre on La Tartine Gourmande. She speaks, among other things, about what make the difference between an American and a French supermarket. If dairy products can be one of the signs that show you are in France, there are also signs that show you are in New Zealand:

- The bakery section is fully surrounded by cinnamon flavour

- Cheeses are sold in tiny portion, except Cheddar and Edam.

- At the delicatessen part, the ham is already sliced

- You can find oil in spray and the oil range is wide

- There is a rainbow of bottles for food coloring

- Vegemite and Marmite is sold next to jam and honey

I'm in my comparing phase at the moment, although I don't like comparison. I would say in general that marketing and branding are not so strong here. I've been formated for many years in France and I admit to be a victim of these strategies. I pay attention to packaging, even if regarding food, my main criteria will remain the taste and the quality. I don't like that much supermarkets. I guess it's probably the light, the scale... The greengrocery section is far to be the most attractive part and I like to hang out there to discover new fruits!

In the same way I like how a shop organizes its window or display items. Last time during the sales, I did a pleasant discovery. It was not the window, nor the display, but the rear side of the shop: the fitting room ! It was huge and comfy at the same time. Nicely decorated in a Japanese style. You just wanted to spend all your afternoon there, trying all their garments !

Retails with personality are not so spread. Nonetheless, I appreciate the atmosphere and lovely shops of Greytown, in Wairarapa. In Wellington, there is Madder & Rouge, but I also like Magnolia (113 Tory Street) and Inky Pinky (Marsden Village, Karori). Both sell gorgeous decorative items ! For Antiques, I will definitely advice to go to Tinakori road and do not miss Cherry Orchard Antique !

You are probably wondering after all, what's the link with iPhone ? There's no. I'm just sick to hear about it everywhere, althought I like its design and that it's user-friendly.

One afternoon while doodling around with a wacom stylus tablet and my laptop I created this image. I saw a similar image in a old Bob Ross Book (you know, the white guy with the afro that painted "happy trees" on Saturdays on PBS). I saw this image in the book and tried to follow the same techniques, but with Corel Painter. For those of you who are artists and have not experienced Corel Painter, be careful, you might never go back to traditional paints again.

I was pleased with the results if I do say so myself so I created a print of it on canvas at FinerWorks and sent one to my mother for her birthday..

I am thinking of painting some more from that book.

God bless Bob Ross for being an inspiration. May he rest in peace.

Some of you sensible people out there might have well insulated homes, but I don't and frankly "dahlings" I'm finding living in a 90 meter square fridge and having condensation streaming down the walls terribly last year. If I was sensible I'd take a trip to Bunnings and invest in some pretty pink batts and investigate heating options but instead I'd rather redecorate and I've found the perfect inspiration;Apartment therapy presents real homes, real people, hundreds of real design solutions, a funky and stylish mixture of rented and owned flats accross America.

Most of the apartments are on the compact side and present significant spacial and aesthetic challenges. Many of the home decorators also admit to having more dash than cash forcing some cunning shopping and innovative solutions. The "real people" owners use flea market vintage and quirky collections, such as kewpie dolls, metal wrenches(!) and street signs to add that little "je ne sais pas" to the mix. I particularly loved a wall covered entirely with post-it notes. This is a fantastic and achievable source book for anyone drawn to the cheap, cheerful or kitsch in interior decoration.

Last year I got really in to baking. It's really fun to get into the kitchen with my three year old daughter and bake cupcakes. I got so into it I started buying all kinds of tips and bags and cool pans. I checked out a bunch of books from the library and I had a blast! Since moving though, I haven't really done any baking... too much to do around the house. Well, last week was my husband's birthday and our dear friends' son had his birthday a little while ago too, and they decided to have a big family gathering/birthday party for the two. Guess who got to bake the cake??

First I had this Jungle theme idea, but I wasn't sure how it was going to work out. I did a three layer cake with homemade frosting (vanilla with some caramel syrup added for fun). Then did a nice jungle green for the outside of the cake. After I put it on and looked at the cake, I just couldn't see the vision in my head... NOTHING! Drastic times call for drastic measures, so I started adding brown frosting to the green frosting (couldn't do chocolate cause the little boy hates chocolate... I know, who hates chocolate, right?) and it started looking kind of camo. Well, I thought about just adding army men and doing some kitschy phrase, but my husband and the boy's dad were both in the Navy, so Army is a big no-no. Then it came to me! I would just throw together some black frosting and go simple. I printed out the text in a kick-butt font on my computer, and then did it free hand on the cake! A little bit of black swirls around the outside, and it looked AWESOME!!! I'm really proud!

So now I'm taking a break while I've got cupcakes in the oven - I've got to do something with the extra frosting otherwise I will EAT IT ALL!

So, go have a piece of cake, or take a look at a few of these sites and get inspired!
