Initial Appeal:
With the song "Six" appearing on Guitar Hero II, All That Remains has enjoyed significant exposure and success. Initially, I expected the album to be quite technical (Of which it was) due to Oli Herbert (Lead Guitar) being a guitar instructor. I have had several recommendations to pick up the album, and upon finally caving in and doing so, I'm glad I got the album.

Filled within the 11 tracks is pure -core heaven. Great break-downs, great guitar solos, great riffs, and nice, interesting vocals. This album was definetly hyped up to the max, of which it delivered.

I'd give the Initial Appeal a 10/10.

Creativity:
Upon hearing "Six" in Guitar Hero II (Which basically turned me onto ATR), I liked their music. Upon downloading their album, I was quite intrigued by how different each track sounds. For a genre that gets over-done poorly day after day, they provide a new spin and take on it.

I'll analyze the guitar tracks first. To begin, Oli Herbert and Mike Martin are an amazing duo. Their harmonizing solos and killer riffs provide an amazing feeling of intensity (More on that later) that are mixed perfectly with the other tracks. Each track has a smooth, easy, and complex solo that blends very well with the rest of the song. Overall, their guitar work is quite impressive (With great tone), and I look forward to seeing what else Herbert and Martin do together.

With the guitars done, I'll go onto the bass tracks. They're quite hard to hear, which is a shame because Jeanne Sagan really seems to come up with some great bass grooves. However, when you can hear them, she dominates the track very well. They're clean, crisp, and bright.

Drums; Oh boy, where to begin. The drums are quite aggressive and fast. From 32nd note double bass and nice, jammy grooves, Jason Costa does quite the job in terms of changing things up and making his parts quite complex and fun to listen too. I often find myself playing air drums to his parts. A must learn for any aspiring drummer.

And onto vocals/lyrics. Phil Labonte is a classically trained vocalist (By none other than the Queen of Scream, Melissa Crosse) who just couldn't find the right act. After several stints with other major bands, he finally settled into Massachusetts-based All That Remains. His voice varies from harsh growls and guttural vocals to clean singing and piercing screams. Overall, his voice adds an edge to the music previously unknown. I often find myself shivering after hearing a great passage in a song.

Labonte's lyrics are very creative in terms of not sticking to the "Emo" stereotype, and often have to do with self-empowerment or dreams. If I had to guess, they're inspired personally by his experiences, which adds to the overall personality of the album. In a rather short summary, each song seems to be a strange metered poem. Quite interesting to read and interpret, if you're into that.

Overall, the creativity gets a 10/10. The tracks are mixed and mastered wonderfully, with each new song providing a new journey to an emotional mecca. Great tone, great drumming, great vocals, and great lyrics all lend to the powerful 10 this album gets in my book. A must for those seeking something new.

Re-playability:
So, with me gushing over this band's talent enough, let's analyze the music for a moment. I feel this album is really geared towards musicians more than just listeners. The solos may seem boring to those who don't comprehend the talent and dedication it takes to create such a complex arrangement. Because of the above stated fact, I'm docking points off the re-playability. Some people just don't like guitar/drum solos (As crazy as that sounds).

I'd give the re-playability factor a 8.5/10. Instrument solos dominate large portions of the album, and to those who like vocals/lyrics, it may not interest them as much.

Emotional Value:
From lyrics that suggest some hidden meaning underneath the inspirational messages, to guitar solos that have such angst and aggression, one would have to be dead inside not to pick up on the emotion poured into this album. Each track easily paints a picture in my mind of an event happening, which I love in albums.

With that being said, if growling and screaming isn't your thing, then you might not feel the anger that Labonte and his crew try to put forth. I suppose it's all relative to what your tastes really are.

I give the emotional value of this album a 6.5/10. To some, they can convey a feeling of hatred against the world, or insecurity amongst themselves, but to others, they might just be another pissed off group of adults.

Album Art/Video:
The cover art depicts a person smearing their blood onto a stone wall, which seems rather cliche, and, in my opinion, fails to portray "The fall of ideals". Perhaps they just wanted something generic for the cover, or maybe I'm just missing some subtle detail.

Overall, I'd give the cover art a 2.5/10. It doesn't portray any real meaning other than "looking cool". However, it is a little appealing on the eyes, so that's its saving factor.

Overall:
This album is well put together in my opinion. The tracks are tight and clean, and they make you want more. I would recommend this album to anyone interested in "heavier" music. Not much more to say than that. Definetly a must for musicians to listen to though.

Overall, I'd recommend buying this album if you play an instrument, or are into the -core scene. 8/10. Great songs, great work, but the album art bothers me a lot for some reason, and the fact that it's a rather short album makes me hesitant to spend the money required for buying it.

After metal's long and illustrius history, one has to beg the question, what's next?  In the early 90's who thought it would be possible to be heavier then Pantera,  then Meshuggah's Destroy, Erase, Improve came out.  It seems that since about 2000, we've been on the same course.  The Swedes are doing there things, In Flames has released the same album for the fourth time.  The American's are pumping out solid records and the chaff seems to be burning away.  Even death metal is being given a second life but really, we know that true death metal is only being kept alive by the original groups and that deathcore is an apporopriate term for what's going on now.  So again what's next!!??  I don't know, I'm racking my brain, searching the internet.  I'm afraid that the At The Gates reuinion will only extend our current state of being.  I'm ready to move on but only time will tell.

My love for music began with The Smashing Pumpkins' Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness album, now this was something.  There we're fast songs, slow songs, straight up rock and more kind of out there things.  To me, this album stands not only as the best album of the 1990's, yeah Nirvana can eat a dick, but also one of my all time favourites.  Billy Corgan was into Priest and Maiden and those metal influences definitely came out.  Later on I got into Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails, so my tolerance was going up.  Then in 96'/97' the Nu-Metal craze came at full force and for once I got to be part of a fad that not many people knew about, yet.  It didn't take long before Follow the Leader came out and Nu-Metal was everywhere, those of us that were there for the early Deftones and Korn albums felt betrayed and disenfranchised with commercialization of the whole thing, it happened so fast that I didn't even realize that Disturbed and Linkin Park had killed it like Bush killed grunge.

So what was I to do?  Nu-Metal sucked, maybe it always did and I was tempted to keep going with the Deftones and leave the rest for dead.  Then I heard about Chimaira and I bought they're first album, Pass out of Existence.  There something different here, it was fast, it was heavy, though the riffs were Nu-Metal in style they made no attempts at sounding funky or poppy or clean or like hip-hop, it was like Nu-Metal was less like foil, you know, not that heavy and meant to be thrown away.  I needed more, what was this?!  After more digging I discovered what was being called "The New Wave of American Metal"  and it was then over.  I got into everything, I was like a junky, the heavier the better.  I moved into Metalcore, Hardcore, screamo, Deathcore, Death Metal, Thrash, Grindcore, Swedish Death metal, Prog and I was even inspired to check out the metal roots, like Sabbath, Maiden, Metallica and Pantera.  The only problem was Metallica was no longer heavy enough for me.

So that's the story, I rediscovered metal in my 20's and I haven't looked back.

Hasta ahora lo ultimo que se puede escuchar de una de las bandas mas extremas de argentina, segun Jeadbangers la primera banda argentina demostrando el genenro Metalcore / Deathcore, uno de los generos mas modernos en la actualidad, y uno de mis preferidos.
Actualmente solo tienen un demo llamado "After the End" con unos cuantas canciones muy satisfactorias. No ha pasado mucho tiempo desde que el primer vocalista se retiro de la banda. Ahora el nuevo vocalista demuestra un poco de lo que puede llegar su extrema vos en "destino final" .

El viernes 16 de mayo sera su proximo Show.

CUMPLEAÑOS FELIZ....

 

Hoy, queridos amigos, (y no tan amigos) estamos de celebración en Suicidebystar.

Me llena de ilusión y congratulación escribir esto cuando todos bien sabemos, que cuando se comienza algún proyecto por el simple hecho de disfrutar con él y se empieza con ilusión, ganas y motivación, siempre cabe la posibilidad de que, al ser tantas personas, con gustos dispares y con residencias en cada punta del país, esto se vaya a la mierda más bien rápidamente. Pues bien, este no ha sido el caso de Suicidebystar.

 

Hemos tenido nuestros altibajos,momentos en los que parecía que esta página estaba a punto de caer en el olvido, pero siempre ha habido alguien que con un poco de esfuerzo, ha intentado mantenerla a flote subiendo discos con los que uno disfruta con la ilusión de que más gente lo haga, y con la decepción que se halla cuando la impresión que da a veces este tipo de páginas es la de que nadie ha hecho caso a tu recomendación.

 

Momentos buenos y no tan buenos, pero siempre intentando subir y desempolvar aquello que creemos que es lo mejor para nosotros, y para quienes disfrutan conociendo o recordando discos desde este blog.

 

 A todos los que nos habéis seguido desde un principio y a los que recomendáis esta página a vuestros amigos os queremos dar las gracias de parte de todos los que colaboramos aquí, y por eso mismo y aprovechando que recientemente superamos las 150.000 visitas, hemos decidido hacer un pequeño recopilatorio escogiendo algunas de las canciones que más nos gustan a cada uno de todo lo que hemos subido en este año. Esperemos que también os guste y que sigáis echándonos una ojeada porque seguiremos intentando mantener el nivel.

 

El recopilatorio consta de dos discos, un primer cd para aquellas canciones de corte más agresivo y "duro"; y un segundo disco para las canciones más suaves y relajadas, para que disfruteis de la música que más os guste de entre todo lo que subimos, aún asi, cada disco tiene una amplia variedad de estilos y asi es como lo hemos querido montar y reflejar.

 

Y un especial agradecimiento a todos los que colaboráis aquí, por aportar novedades y otros puntos de vista musicales, por disfrutar haciéndolo y sobre todo a aquellos que suben discos cuando todos estamos vagos o demasiado ocupados como para actualizar.

El Deathcore posee elementos propios del Metalcore, agregándoles los elementos extremos que tiene el Death Metal, así creando un género único. Sus letras pueden hablar sobre política, la mente humana, sobre ramas de la ciencia, religión (ocasionalmente), enojo, entre otros. Destacan en este género bandas como At The Throne of Judgment, Knights Of The Abyss, From The Shallows, As Blood Runs Black, principalmente.

Guitarras: Suelen tener distorsión, casi siempre afinadas en la 6ª cuerda, 2 tonos más abajo, y las 5 cuerdas restantes, 1 tono más abajo de lo convencional. Aunque a veces pueden mantenerse como guitarras de Metalcore, con arpegios armónicos, dándole una atmósfera distinta a la del Death Metal, por así decirlo, una atmósfera un poco melódica, pero manteniéndose con cierto margen de agresividad.

Bajo: Caracterizado por ser concordante con el ritmo de la batería, las pisadas de éste son consecuentes y es tocado con púa para darle un toque más fuerte en su sonido.

.Batería: Suele ser consecuente en los golpes, dejando un poco a un lado pero no del todo los Blast Beats (utilizándolos en medida pequeña) característicos de la batería del Death Metal, así utilizando los Breakdowns (golpes lentos de consecuencia media), elemento tradicional en el hardcore, dando un ritmo agresivo pero no rápido en la batería y una sensación un poco agradable al género.

Voces: Son de expresión gutural acompañada de chillidos, no se suelen usar voces limpias, ya que es de los pocos elementos del Metalcore que se han eliminado por completo.

Duración de las canciones: Suelen ir desde los 3 hasta los 10 minutos de duración (aunque a veces llegan a los 12 minutos) esto es demostrado en los 2 primeros álbumes de Act Of Depression y Cries Of The Past, con canciones que oscilan entre los 7 y 10 minutos de duración, álbumes suavizados por voces limpias y uso de teclados. Drásticamente Underoath cambió de género orientándose hacia el Post-Hardcore, aunque en su último trabajo "Define The Great Line" han sabido recuperar sus orígenes, pero no dejando a un lado el post-hardcore acompañando a este con el Grindcore, pero la agresividad un poco menor a sus trabajos iniciales, pero dentro de este álbum se usan las voces guturales y los chillidos pero ya no tanto como Deathcore sino como Grindcore.

El nombre Deathcore se atribuye a la banda alemana Blood que lanzo un EP en 1986 llamado asi que era por asi decirce la pimera mescla hibrida del Death Metal fucionandolo con EL Hardcore Punk, tambien l a banda alemama llamada Deathcore fundada en 1987 que tenia un sonido Death Metal con bastante influencia del Hardcore Punk, el deathcore comenzo a surgir quiza a mediados de los 90 como genero independiente, pero las primeras mesclas de Death Metal con Hardcore Punk que inpulzaron al genero son de 1986 y 1987.

Como a algunos nos gusta la brutalidad y desesperación, acompañadas de técnica y buena producción pues... nos toca subir el último disco de Carnifex. No dudes en bajartelo si ya escuchaste lo que subimos de As Blood Runs Black o A Black Rose Burial, pues volvemos a ofrecer otra nueva entrega de buen deathcore.

Esta vez algo más bruto si cabe, más cercano al death metal y con un nombre que a muchos tirará  hacia atrás. Pero por encima de todo eso, nos encontramos con un disco impresionante y potente en el que con las escuchas nos vamos enganchando cada vez más. Baterías incansables propias del death metal y una bestia a las voces son lo más destacable de este gran conjunto en el que las guitarras aportan de nuevo ese toque cercano al metalcore. Eso si, si de algo peca el disco es de que es bastante corto, aunque en estos géneros a veces se agradece xD.

Por hablar de grandes canciones, nombraria a todas,  Slit Wrist Savior que es un gran comienzo, Hope Dies With The Decadent con unos riffs muy pegadizos y la gran Lie To My Face, ya un imno de la banda y para mi la mejor del disco; el disco continuará en la misma linea, asi hasta llegar a Dead In My Eyes, un interludio que da lugar a la canción más acelerada y diferente del disco y que le da nombre a este, Dead In My Arms.

Today's word of the day, from the Page-A-Day calendar sitting on my desk, is dissonant.

dissonant: adj 1: marked by dissonance : discordant 2: incongruous 3: harmonically unresolved

Ion Dissonance is deathcore/mathcore/technical metal from Montreal. They have often been compared to The Dillinger Escape Plan, Beecher and Meshuggah. They are known for their technical riffs which are played one over another, groove-like drum patterns and a heavy atmosphere. Their lyrics are quite disturbing, dealing with death, murder, more death, and somewhat more acceptable topics such as struggling with faith. Lyrically, I don't stand behind this band's decisions, but hot dang can they riff. Stand-out tracks include The Surge and Shunned Redeemer.

Like businessmen you squeeze every resource to maximize profitability.
