There has been a lot of buzz over at MLB Trade Rumors that Jarrod Washburn could find his way into

There has been a lot of buzz over at MLB Trade Rumors that Jarrod Washburn could find his way into Yankee pinstripes soon. The Mariner lefty has enjoyed a healthy 2008 and would fit nicely into the back end of New York's rotation, likely replacing one of Darrell Rasner or Sidney Ponson. While it appears that the price, in prospects that it is, would be within Brian Cashman's budget, I'm not so sure that this is simply a salary dump (no, I have not trademarked the term as of this moment).

Let's take a gander at Washburn's numbers this year, as well as some splits. (All statistics cited in this post were taken directly from baseball-reference.com).

GS: 19
W-L: 4-9
IP: 110
H: 131
BB: 32
K: 65
ERA: 4.75

Using these "19th-century" statistics, we can see that Wash has been respectable but far from spectacular. Seattle's terrible offense aside, he isn't exactly tearing up opponents. Or is he?

March/April: 33.1 IP, 4.86 ERA
May: 20.1 IP, 9.30 ERA
June: 30.2 IP, 2.93 ERA
July: 25.2 IP, 3.16 ERA

His totals are clearly skewed by a horrendous May. Outside of that, he's posting a sub-4.00 ERA. Hey, that rhymes.

Now, I certainly wouldn't expect him to keep up this pace, but a resurging Yankees offense and flyball-friendly ballpark would give him the firm support he needs. Lefties are OPS'ing just .646 against him, and we know well how the cavernous left side of Yankee Stadium's outfield hurts right-handers. He is notable for pitching well at the House That Ruth Built for a while, but that's not enough reason to get him, in my opinion. I simply like the situation and his career. He should be had for a B-level prospect and perhaps cash, and Jarrod has postseason experience. Being left-handed is usually to your benefit as well.

Ignoring statistics for a moment, I'd like to make it known that I largely advocate this move in the favor of the Yankees, and for the Mariners, albeit to a lesser extent. The Yanks get a veteran lefty who has pitched well in their home ballpark for nothing of interest to them, and the M's dump unnecessary salary. As an added bonus, the Yankees would have him under contract for 2009 at the reasonable sum of $10.35MM. Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina are not automatic re-signs, so I take this as a plus and not a negative as many have claimed across the 'Net.

The bottom line: Brian Cashman, go get 'em.

There are things I want to write about. Unfortunately I cannot write about them now as I have frittered away most of my available time today. I have had delightful catch-ups with my close friend who I had not spoken to since before my holiday. I listened to the radio 4 afternoon play because it was by my former tutor, and as much as I wanted to hate it I found it quite average (though I do think having 2 BBC correspondents as researchers was cheating).

I really should do some work, for although I have time until my deadline I was given this assignment a little early so I should try to finish it a little early. I feel I have been arrogant in assuming that I am superior and secure and should not take too many liberties. One of my colleagues who I have little respect for professionally has got a new job and will be leaving in four weeks to go to London. He will undoubtedly be much better paid there. As it is I need to keep my job for the stability it offers, though if they are already down a person they are hardly likely to fire anyone else. I can but hope that his salary will be divided amongst the rest of us to make up for the lack of pay rise. To be more serious when my partner gets a job I expect he will be earning more than me and combined we may start to have a comfortable life.

I decided to use Patons 100%wool baby 2 ply in white for this shawl as I have 10 x 25g in my stash : ) I can always overdye it if I want too later.

Edit by YFSarah: there is no deadline for completion, but there is a prize for the first knitter to post a completed shawl to the knitalong, and the KAL blog will be open for two months after the winner is known.

No need to be dramatic about this - we missed the 48 Hour Film Project deadline by 15 minutes. My goal was to have my students take part in a real challenge - make a movie in two days. That we accomplished. And there were lessons learned...mostly by me, but also by them.

They learned how to use prosumer cameras properly. How to use the manual iris, focus, and white balance. They learned how to improvise when plans had to be changed. They learned that making a movie is a LOT of work...but there is fun to be had along the way.

I learned that a two hour trip into San Francisco is not a good time to finish editing the movie. Adam Nino got motion sick.

We couldn't export our final movie to tape after numerous tries, so exported as a video file. Now you know and I know that five minutes of video takes up one gigabyte of hard drive space. Sure - it doesn't. Our final video was about 4:57 - and 1.3GB.

At 7pm we went for a quick cut - took about :10. Still too big. Finally whittled it down to 4:35 and an 857mb file that would fit on a 1GB flash drive.

On delivering our movie, we found out we weren't the last - there were still six or seven teams still out. Elena Cruz, the San Francisco coordinator, said about 20% of films come in late on average.

So the bad news - we were late and can't really compete.
The good news - our movie will still be shown in San Francisco in a week to a real live paying audience AND we are still eligible for the audience choice award.

Sweet.

UNITED CONFERENCE 4-9 November 2008 near Belgrade (RS) - CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

DESCRIPTION AND AIMS:

* What is Europe today?
* Who are the Europeans?
* How does our part shape our future?
* Does history repeat?

Entire Europe has been facing great social, economic, political and cultural changes in last few decades. Twenty years ago our continent was still divided by an iron curtain in a Western and Eastern Block and it was not commonly expected that this situation would ever change. Moreover, 20 years ago there still existed a country in the Balkans called Yugoslavia - and the war in the region wasn't expected either. But it happened. Communism collapsed and Yugoslavia was dissolved.
Countries from Eastern Europe started a difficult transformation and European integration process, facing different challenges at all levels of society. Passing through major changes and leaving the past behind is a difficult process.
Meanwhile, Western Europe is also changing. Immigrants are searching for jobs and better life, refugees, IDP's and asylum seekers from many countries are looking for a safe place in Europe to live a decent life. Their languages, cultures, customs and religions are making Europe more diverse and colourful. There is diversity, but is there unity as well? There are a lot of stereotypes, xenophobia, intolerance and discrimination. New forms of racism are appearing targeting new groups that must be protected.

There are great challenges in front of all of us. Europe is an old continent with a past full of conflict, still in the process to define its identity and shape its future. The aim of the conference is to strengthen the anti-racist movement in Europe, particularly in the Balkans, and to promote solidarity among civil society organisations.
The conference will bring together around 70 NGO participants from different social, national, religious or other minority background, and offers the possibility to share visions of European past, present and future in working groups, strategy building workshops, presentations, political cafes, panel discussions, intercultural activities and many other occassions.

The main themes of the conference are structured in the following working groups:

* No way In, No way Out! Refugees, IDP's and Asylum Seekers.
Legislation and different practices in Europe regarding migration conditions, asylum policy, detention and Internally Displaced Persons.

* Who shall we blame now? Inequality and vulnerable groups
Weak points of European governmental policy, vulnerable groups and phenomena affecting them: criminalisation, trafficking and exploitation.

* Sociophobia! Creating our Enemies, Facing our Fears.
The role of prejudices and stereotypes about minority groups in social segregation and discriminative political discourse.

* The Dead End of Dialogue! Radicalism and Tools of Propaganda.
The impact of radical propaganda on public opinion and colors of extremism.

* Accept your Past, Build your Future! Post-conflict Solidarity, Responsibility and Reconciliation
Learning the lessons from the past and taking the responsibility for the future we want.

* Do you believe it? New Faces of Racism, New Target Groups of Racism.
New faces of racism appear as history is repeating itself, this time targeting different groups of people in Europe.

UNITED is the largest pan-European anti-racist network of more than 560 organisations.
Through its conferences anti-racist and human rights activists from all parts of Europe meet and discuss effective ways of combating racism and discrimination. At a recent UNITED conference held in May 2008 in Stockholm more than 65 delegates representing organisations from 30 European countries analysed the current situation of people affected by discrimination in Europe and developed common strategies to improve cooperation and promote tolerance.

With Johnny Damon likely returning in a week, the Yankee offense will receive a much needed boost of

With Johnny Damon likely returning in a week, the Yankee offense will receive a much needed boost of both power (in comparison to Damon's current fill-in, Brett Gardner) and speed. Damon has been having an outstanding year and he'll likely continue his torrid pace upon his return. However, the team will still have to deal with a few question marks in the form of Bobby Abreu, Melky Cabrera, Jorge Posada, Robinson Cano, and let's not forget, Derek Jeter. Also, A-Rod's personal problems have to be a concern as well. Essentially, the entire lineup, up to this point, is a collective question mark.

While the Yankees worry about their own team, they'll also have to deal with both the Rays and the Red Sox. Now, the Rays stumbled into the AS break losing 7 games in a row. The Red Sox are worried about slugger David Ortiz as well as Julio Lugo. Both of these teams have the ability to get better by trading for talent. In fact, wouldn't it be the smart thing to do for the two teams, especially with the Yankees limping 6 games back in the standings? The Sox and Rays smell blood right now, and if they were to make a solid acquisition by the trade deadline, while the Yankees stay content and make bargain bin moves (which aren't inherently bad of course), what would that say about the team?

Brian Cashman is in a precarious position. If the Sox or Rays traded for a big time talent, everyone would call for him to respond. However, this year, he's shown that he doesn't want to trade away his top prospects for outside talent. He's actually letting the farm system bubble over and stew. But, imagine if the Rays acquired Matt Holliday? What would that do to the AL East? Could the Yankees even compete at that point? What's difficult for Cashman is the nature of his team. It's built with big names and big contracts, contracts that have ironclad trade stipulations and limitations. If Cashman wants to blow the entire thing up and trade his players, he simply cannot do that. So, in a sense, he HAS to make moves and create a contender.

However, maybe the trade deadline will come and go and we'll see that Cashman has done nothing to better the team. Maybe he'll ride it out and see if the team just puts it together in the second half. That probably won't bode well for the Yanks since a rotation featuring Rasner and Ponson won't do much damage and Melky Cabrera isn't exactly a paragon of offenisve excellence. That non-move would mean something, though. Basically, if it fails, it fails. People always talk about Hughes and Kennedy and how they'll signal a new era in Yankee baseball. But, by not making a move come the trade deadline, forget Hughes or Kennedy, Cashman's non-move will probably become the definitive signal of that new era in Yankee baseball.

By Martin Couper

A PENSIONER had a lucky escape after having a heart attack in the street - because three emergency service workers happened to be passing.

Marcus James, 73, was walking to a bus stop near his home when he collapsed and lost consciousness.

The frail OAP stopped breathing after the fall and needed emergency treatment.

And as luck would have it an accident and emergency nurse, an off-duty policewoman and a cardiac nurse were all walking by and saved his life.

Last night, Mr James praised the brave trio and said that angels must have been looking after him.

He said: “The angel of the Lord was there with us that day, I’m convinced of that. I’m so thankful to the people who stopped.

An off-duty policewoman was the first to attend to Mr James after she spotted him lying face-down on the ground in the pouring rain.

She began to give him CPR before she was joined by accident and emergency nurse, David Adams, 35, who had jumped out his car when he noticed the situation.

Mr Adams performed mouth to mouth while the policewoman pressed down on his chest.

The nurse said: “There was no pulse and no breathing at that point. I was wondering how long he had been lying there.

“I just wanted to give him the best chance possible before the ambulance arrived.”

The pair were then assisted by a Fiona Low – a cardiac nurse who was walking by.

Ms Low said: “We followed the resuscitation guidelines surrounded by a group of passers-by. I felt my knees were going to give up - but we certainly were not going to.”

Ten minutes later, a one-man ambulance crew arrived and used a defibrillator on the former special-needs teacher before a second ambulance arrived to take him to hospital.

And Mr James was quick to praise the efforts everyone who helped save his life.

Mr James’s frail health means he is usually accompanied by his wife and full-time carer, Margaret when he leaves the house.

Mr James had previously been admitted to hospital in 1999 for a quadruple heart bypass and then again in 2000 following a stroke.

Both Mr James and his wife are now planning to thank those who helped him survive.

He said: “We’ve written letters, but I haven’t gotten down to polishing them up and getting them away yet.

“We’ve told them we’re very grateful though. We know they’ve done a good job.”

Lucky Mr James added: “They did a first class job. I was well blessed in that they were there at the right time.”

Hi boys and girls, welcome to the All Star Break!

With Moises Alou out of the picture, and Ryan Church being questionable, the Mets are definitely looking around to fill in some of their outfield holes.

The current word is the Mets are looking to get Jason Bay and may cost outfield prospect Fernando Martinez. First, let's take a look at Bay.

Bay is a 29 year old OF, making $6M and currently hitting .287 with 19 HR's, 56 RBI's, amounting to a .918 OPS on a bad Pirates squad. Not bad. Let's take a closer look. Over his career, Bay has very good numbers at Shea. He's batting .303 with a .957 OPS with 5 HR's in 76 plate appearances. So, how about pre and post All Star Break numbers? Bay slightly tails off after the break according to his career numbers, but not by much.

So overall, if the Mets are going for the championship this season, Bay should be a great addition to the Mets, probably worth trading Fernando Martinez for and should pay off for the next 2-3 years.

Tatis is probably going to continue being a starter for the rest of the season, possibly sharing a little time with Endy Chavez.

I am almost positive that Omar Minaya will be making a move before the trade deadline, whether it be Bay, Nady, or even pitcher A.J. Burnett. In any case, let's hope the break won't cool down the Mets too much. Enjoy the HR Derby and All Star Game!

When I'm stricken with writer's block and wallowing in inertia, there are two things that can pull me out fast - peer pressure and a deadline.

When I say peer pressure, I'm talking about positive expectations from your songwriting peers, for example your co-writer, song circle or local songwriters association. Unlike the peer pressure in high school, you want this kind of pressure (it's support, really). If you don't have any songwriting peers you can trust, go to the Songwriter's Tip Jar forum and get something started for yourself.

A deadline is another motivator. I give myself arbitrary deadlines, but that doesn't work as well as a real deadline. Taxi members have strict deadlines. Other examples of deadlines are when writing for a specific event (like a benefit concert, a recording session) or when writing to a title for a monthly song circle (see the previous post for more on writing to a title).

ah, iya. saya selalu kusut kalau bangun pagi.

Courage..

Kabar baik buat bos-bos nih... "My employees will work better with short deadlines." Tapi jika hukum Parkinson ini disalahgunakan dapat mengakibatkan worker abuse... Kabar buruk buat para employee... :(

Bagaimana pendapat pembaca tentang hukum Parkinson ini? Kira-kira apa saja kebaikan dan keburukannya ya?

~beberapa deadline tugas masih menanti. Ngeblognya sampai di sini dulu yah...
