Jawohl, genau die Mauer! Nicht weil ich grundsätzlich was gegen "die im Osten" habe - meine Ex und einige sehr gute Freunde kommen aus dem Osten - und auch nicht, weil ich da einige äusserst miese Erfahrungen mit dem braunen Bodensatz machen musste (es ist nicht besonders schön, mit zwei Freunden zusammen in einem Kaff im Erzgebirge von ca. 10 Glatzen verfolgt und bepöbelt zu werden), nein, mir geht es um was ganz anderes. Es gibt keine Konkurrenz mehr!

Seit dem sich der einst "Sozialistische" Osten (ich hör sie schon alle schreien "Das war eine Diktatur, du scheiss-Kommunist!", alles Verbrecher! Menschenrechtsverletzer! - ich habe die Zeit nach dem 2. Weltkrieg zwar nicht selber miterlebt (die so-genannte "Gnade der späten Geburt" nannte der dicke Lügner und Verbrecher Kohl das glaube ich) aber ich hätte es schön gefunden, wenn der Aufwand und das Geschrei, das heutzutage um die ehemalige DDR, die SED und so gemacht wird, vielleicht damals auch um die Nazis gemacht worden wäre - aber das ist wohl zu viel verlangt, waren doch damals fast alle Nazis.) verabschiedet hat, fehlt einfach eine Alternative zum allein selig machenden Kapitalismus™, wie wir ihn jetzt hier haben. Und das merkt man. Überall.

Bestes Beispiel dafür in diesem ehemaligen "Sozialstaat", der so langsam zum Neoliberalen Sandkasten für Grosskapitalisten und Verbrecher verkommt, sind unsere "Sozialgesetze" - und das, was Politiker, Staatsanwälte und Richter daraus machen. Nur ein Beispiel dafür ist dieser Fall hier: Ein Sozialhilfeempfänger habe keinen Anspruch auf fabrikneue Kleidung. Karl Weiss hat recht, wenn er schreibt:

Dabei sollten wir nicht vergessen: Es sind keineswegs nur die Richter, die sich mit dicker Brieftasche auf unsere Kosten gütlich tun. Es ist auch die Politikerkaste, die das neue Sozialgesetzbuch beschlossen hat, das die Grundlage für solche Entscheidungen liefert: Es waren die Politiker von CDU/CSU und SPD, von Grünen und FDP, die dies gemeinsam auf dem Gewissen haben!

Und weil wir keine Alternative mehr haben, Bzw. unsere Politiker nicht mehr Angstvoll über Mauern zu einem anderen System linsen brauchen, wo dem Volk vielleicht ja eine andere Lebensweise geboten wird (ob freiwillig oder nicht, darüber will ich jetzt gar nicht reden, es geht um das Prinzip - und angeblich lebt der Kapitalismus doch von Konkurrenz), wird sich, was dieses System angeht, auch nichts ändern. Auf jeden Fall solange nicht, bis eventuell doch mal ein Teil des Volkes Aufsteht und dem Kapital und den Politikern ihre Sprüche um die Ohren haut und sie Allesamt an die Wand stellt. Zeit für eine Revolution ist es schon lange.

Oder dieses System verabschiedet sich unter Massiven Krämpfen einfach von selber (so sieht es ja im Moment aus, wenn man sich die Weltwirtschaft so anschaut). Nur schade, das die ganzen Neoliberalen Faschisten auch das mit Sicherheit überleben werden. Aber vielleicht werden sie ja dann endlich erschossen oder aufgehängt, verdient hätten sie es allemal!

Deshalb will ich die Mauer zurück! Damit es eine Alternative gibt. Und eine lange Wand, an die man dieses ganze Pack dann stellen kann...

I'm not sure who the owner of Frogger is right now, if it's Konami or someone else but this would be a great idea for a new DDR game. At the Newport Aquarium in northern Kentucky, USA they have a modified set of DDR pads connected to a 3D Frogger game that anyone can walk up and play with. I'm not sure if the Frogger game is one that was designed just for this exhibit or if they are using the first 3D version of Frogger that Hasbro released roughly 10 years ago (from the snapshot the 3D graphics are pretty basic). From the source it sounds like it plays pretty well and a lot of people still hold a great affection for the arcade's best known green character so a new game like this would probably do pretty well as an official release.

(Tagesspiegel, Welt) Den gleichen Gedanken hatte offenbar "Aufbau-Ost-Minister" (LVZ) Wolfgang Tiefensee, der in einem Gastkommentar für BamS verlangt, mehr über die nicht so rosigen Seiten der DDR im Geschichtsunterricht zu vermitteln. Aber auch die Eltern seien gefordert, so Tiefensee:

(Not to be  confused with a dancing version of "Revolution X") Konami have just put up a teaser site for thier upcoming new DDR which coincides with the game's 1o year anniversary. Aptly called Dance Dance Revolution X, there is no other information as of yet, but judging by the silhouette picture of the cabinet it looks like it's getting a bit of a redesign. Also there is another teaser site for the Playstation 2 version of the game, which also doesn't give much away.

Today there are so many features on laptops. For most businesses they simple need a good laptop that works for a long period of time and at a great low price. So when they look at laptops they see units that are almost exactly the same with huge price differences. Many upgrades and things in the laptop world simply are not logical and not needed. I will talk about many of them and tell you the secret to finding the best prices.

For example 250 GB hard drives are fairly new, and 320GB laptop hard drives are still very rare. The standard is a 160GB hard drive. The larger hard drive, can ad 100-200 dollars to the price of the laptop, for just a bit more space. The average business customer uses less than 40GB of space so it is crazy to pay extra for this space.

One thing that you should know about laptops is that all laptops sold are really only made by 7 companies, and all of these companies are Chinese. Every brand you see is really a laptop from one of these companies branded with the company logo. Dell uses 5 of these 7 companies. Because of this you will notice laptops from different brands that look exactly the same, you will also notice laptops from the same brands that look totally different. The only one of these makers that sells laptops direct is Acer, but their laptops are usually very low quality and it is usually better to pay a bit more for better quality.

In the world of computers the price of something is more about how many of them are being sold and NOT about how good or complex the item is. The main cost in any item is the designing of the item and the equipment to make the item. For a CPU for example it costs up to a billion dollars to design a new chip and may cost less than $10 to actually make the chip. So if you make 20 million of these chips the cost is $60 per chip, but if you make 500 million of them your cost is $11 per chip. You even get more savings that that when you build a lot of the same item. Because of this many newer, better and faster things are much cheaper. Many CPUs are much higher in level than what you are buying but the maker just takes the higher ones and disables some higher features and sells them as a lower unit because it is cheaper to do this than make the lower unit any longer. RAM is also the same way, DDR2 is much better and faster than DDR but because it is made in much larger amounts it is cheaper. This is called “Economy of Scale” and it hold true from everything from your TV to you Car.

In the world of laptops this idea works all over the place. In my opinion HP and Toshiba make great laptops and because they sell so many they are actually better and more updated than laptops made for the same price by other companies. Because Sony is so much more money they sell less, and have a higher cost, a bad situation to be in. By far most laptops that are sold have a 15.4 inch screen, so laptops with this size are also the lowest priced of all laptops. Touchpads are by far the most popular and their price has plummeted so they now have the lowest price and are now the only choice most companies offer. DVD burners do everything you would want an optical drive to do, and because they are built in such number now they are cheaper than all of the lower types to put in, thus every laptop you will see has a DVD burner, because it is cheaper and has a larger perceived value to the customer.

The choice of CPU, Hard Drive, Optical Drive and many of the other parts of a laptop, and computers in general are based on this idea. Now to get the best deal you need to look at many different laptops and notice the trends. A laptop that floods the market may be $100 less than the others and yet be much better. This is why people hire my company to find their next laptop, we know the trends and we have a very small markup. They can pay us and still end up with a faster and better laptop and pay LESS money than if they went to wherever they normally go for laptops.

What Exactly to look for in a business laptop.

When you look for your laptop simply compare the specs from one laptop to another, but it pays to have a huge source and look at large lists of laptops because you will often find a better deal on that list.

Balance: When you look for any computer look for balance, too much CPU power at the cost of everything else will result in a slower computer. Also think about what you want to use the laptop for. If you want to play high end games then insist on a laptop with a higher end video card, it may cost $100 or more extra but will do what you want. With computers running vista you really need at least 2GB of RAM to do things efficiently. If you find a great deal on a laptop with only 1GB, buy it then upgrade the RAM later, it may be much cheaper. Don’t spend the extra money getting a much larger hard drive, first 90% of all users never use the space, second if you need more space you can get an external hard drive later, but mostly that extra bit of space really costs a lot of money in most cases. Almost every laptop comes with Vista Home Premium. This is ok for about 90% of the people out there, but if you expect to join a domain be sure to get the business version. Also if you really need XP you are looking for a older out of production laptop, these would have been sold at a much higher price to the seller and they will be asking more for them, and you get less new features than a Vista laptop.

Battery Life: Also think about battery life, for the road warrior out there it is important to have that computer last a long time. So this is what you should look for, first you need to have a processor that can scale back and use less power when you don't need full power, but can scale up as when you do need the power. The AMD Turion is the best AMD chip at this job, but Intel really dominates this concept with their Core 2 Duo and their entire Centrino line.  Companies have spent a lot of time and money focusing on power saving, so newer technology chips are much better at this than older ones.  For any laptop the MAIN use of power is for the screen, usually it is hard to find the power consumption of the screen, but again newer technology is better.  To get all this best technology be willing to pay for it.

Size: For many people, the size of the laptop is very important, they want a smaller, thinner and more portable laptop. Because of economy of scale there is a common size that most makers make, small enough to sell in huge number and large enough to not be too much money to make. When you want to go smaller you fight economy of scale and also the fact that smaller parts cost more. Because of this smaller, thinner laptops cost much more. Every now and then a company will make a really small laptop in a large quantity and if you find that you can get a great deal on a laptop just the way you want. Don’t get the smaller laptop unless you really have figured out how much you are really paying for that option.

Laptops also change really fast. Think about how they are made. The design of the laptop, and making the first one is over half the cost of the entire run. So companies will make the really hard analysis to decide how many of a laptop design to order from the places that make them. Once the production run is over that laptop is usually never made again. Because it takes so long to build a container of laptops, maybe 2 weeks, then 2 more weeks to ship them it these companies have to predict upfront how many may sell. Usually the production run is less than a few full shipping containers. So the company, lets use HP, designs a laptop, orders 10,000 of them. They are made and shipped, they arrive in the US and are quickly sent to wholesale warehouses and retail stores all over the US. Amazon buys some, Wal-Mart buys some. Before the container even lands in the US HP will try to have it all sold. If it is all sold they may order another production run of 10,000. Almost every week a new, better chipset or CPU or something comes out, and often for a better price. So the designers are always looking to go to the next thing. And that brand new, popular design is now put out of production, never to be made again. Most designs are already put out of production before the first customer even gets one. It is a harsh business with huge risks and huge investments. This is also why only a few companies are really players in this business.

Every now and then a design is produced in a larger amount than that which can be quickly sold off. When this happens they slash the price and dump it on the wholesale market. Sometimes they just sold this computer for $700 to Wal-Mart and have only 500 units left and the design is no longer made so they dump it for $500 or less. Most wholesale companies only mark up parts 10% or less because there is huge competition. Only computer companies can usually buy from these wholesale places, this is exactly what we do here at Emerald Computers. We look for the best of these wholesale deals, select them and we post an online flyer and send email updates to our customers. If you are not getting our email you really are missing some great deals.

So what would I do it I was going to buy a laptop today? You choice for a laptop or any computer is based on what you plan to use the computer for and your personal habits.  Here is the logic that I use, if you need help choosing a laptop then email me your phone number and I will call you and help you with the process.  Lets make it fair and give me a budget of under $1000.  First I would budget in a Microsoft Wireless Laser Optical Laptop Mouse.  They are really a must have for me for long usage, and at under $25 they are a bargain.  Next I would look for a Turion based laptop unless I could find a special on a Intel based one.  The Turion ones are usually at least $100 less for the same speed.  I almost never go a long time on battery power so for me personally batter life is not much of a concern.  What is a concern is a high resolution screen.  I would stick to a 15.4" size simply because it is just the right size for me, 17" it is a bit to big, but I try to get at least the 1440x900 resolution, maybe the 1680x1050 (WSXGA+).  I would not get the very common 1280x800 because for me and my eyes I can see much better than that and I need the space.  I don't game on my laptop so an average video card is good for me.  And I have a few external hard drives, and most of my data will stay on my main computer so a 160GB drive is ok for me.  I like to multitask so I would need 2GB of RAM, I would not get more than 2GB because it takes extra power to run that extra ram, and I almost never go over 2GB, also I like to hibernate my computer and more RAM makes that much slower. When a new OS comes out I may upgrade the RAM.  I would still look at computers with 1GB because I know can upgrade the RAM very cheap on my own.  I do watch DVD movies and I like to have good sound so I would look for a computer with a nice DVD drive and good speakers.  I would also look at a picture of the laptop first, different makers have much different styles and I only like some of them.  I also like black better than silver, but that will not kill the deal.  I found a laptop just like this for only a bit over the budget.  You need to look for one based on your needs.

El contexto sociopolítico: la República Democrática Alemana

Después de la derrota alemana en 1945, la Unión Soviética ocupó las zonas del país menos industrializadas. Los grandes núcleos urbanos quedaron para Occidente. El 7 de Octubre 1949 se funda la RDA como respuesta a la fundación de RFA pocos meses antes. Aislada de Occidente y con el Ejército Rojo en el país, la RDA no tuvo otra opción que ser un estado satélite soviético. Pero no fue un estado cualquiera, desarrolló una potente y peculiar cultura en medio de un sistema ominoso. Ese país ya no existe, pero Occidente vive hoy una suerte de nostalgia, Ostalgie, por un mundo que conoció sólo desde la perspectiva del prejuicio y que hoy se re-visita.

La ardua vivencia judía en la Alemania comunista

La actividad demográfica judía en la RDA podría decirse que fue de un constante despoblamiento. Los escasos judíos que sobrevivieron la Shoah, pronto fueron impactadas por la división de Alemania y la construcción del Muro. Pero fue El Proceso Slansky (Praga, 1952), donde resultaron ejecutados doce dirigentes del Partido Comunista Checoslovaco inocentes, y que tuvo caracteres paranoicos (once eran judíos), demostraron a los judíos alemanes que lo mismo podría suceder en la República Democrática Alemana y no le importaría a nadie. Después de la Guerra de los Seis Días vino una respuesta antisemita por parte de la nomenklatura del SED (Die Sozialistsche Einheitspartei Deutschlands), el partido único de la RDA, que significó la huida de buena parte de los ciudadanos judíos del país. en el mismo sentido, ¡Que decir! del impacto y desamparo cuándo se enteraron de la revocación de la ciudadanía y virtual expulsión de los judíos polacos en 1968, proceso injurioso que incluyó -incluso- a comunistas que eran parte del apparatchik, a héroes de la talla de Leopold Trepper, voluntario en las Brigadas Internacionales en la España republicana y luego "Grand Chef", líder de la red antinazi clandestina más grande de la Segunda Guerra, La Orquesta Roja, o filósofos de renombre como Zigmund Bauman.

Es que nada es simple cuándo se trata de los judíos bajo la órbita soviética, por ejemplo la enseñanza del Holocausto en las escuelas de la RDA, ha tenido que ser estudiado con cuidado, como en el ensayo de Frank Keilhack (2004) “Der Umgang mit Juden und Holocaust in der SBZ / DDR 1945-1989”. Igual cosa ocurre con el caso que documentalizó Jörg Monschau, sobre la recepción del Mercader de Venecia en el teatro de la RFA y la RDA 1945-1989 (2007). Sobre este tema recomiendo la lectura la investigación online de Konrad Weiss (2006) Antisemitismus und Israelfeindschaft in der DDR.

Cantando en idisch entre la Stasi y Aktuelle Kamera

A pesar de todo eso, existió en la RDA una vida cultural judía oficial. En general, fue protegida por la Comunidad judía del Gran Berlín y la Verbandes der Jüdischen Gemeinden in der DDR (Federación de Comunidades Judías de la RDA). El paradigma de esta época fue la cantante Lin Jaldati. Activista comunista, es conocida también por ser la última persona en ver con vida Anne Frank, en Bergen-Belsen, y fue la única entre conco miembros de su familia que sobrevivió a la deportación del campo de Westerbork a Auschwitz. Luego de la liberación reunificó los jalones de su familia en la RDA, cantó en canciones en idisch -que había aprendido en el Campo- ante un público alemán en la RDA. Lin Jaldati siempre estuvo dispuesta a realizar su arte al servicio de la nomenklatura de la RDA. Su calidez, el poder de evocar de su timbre y ritmo como su honestidad hizo que fuese escuchada y seguida mediante la radiodifusión por una audiencia fiel más allá de los actos oficiales. Durante largo tiempo fue acompañada en piano por su marido, Eberhard Rebling a quien conoció en los 30’ mientras activaba en el movimiento solidaridad con la España Republicana. Con el tiempo se sumaron sus dos hijas, Katinka y Jalda. Después de la Guerra de los Seis Días, pasaron muchos años de prohibición y sospecha para todo lo "judío" bajo la acusación de “incitar la simpatía hacia Israel”. En 1982 grabó con la Martin Hoffmann Orchestra y viajó algunas veces fuera de la RDA como el Zurich Iddish Folk Festival 1984, editado en 2004. Su actuación es considerada un clásico, en todos los sentidos del término, caracterizado por un enorme respeto a la poesía, drama, melodía, armonía, ritmo, risas y lágrimas inherentes al género idischista. Jaldati y su familia fueron los únicos intérpretes de canciones en idisch en la RDA.

Con todo, en los 70’s y lentamente, un pequeño grupo de personas realizó literatura idisch y también música, por ejemplo Wolf Biermann (1936- ), un conocido cantautor y disidente que le fue cancelada su ciudadanía en 1976. En los años 80 se podía apreciar ya una escena propia y una generación más joven que perseveró en esta disciplina.

Por dar algunos ejemplo, El poeta Juergen Rennert que exploró los rastros de la cultura alemana y el odio humano en lengua idisch se convirtió en uno de los mejores poetas alemanes en esa lengua. Entre otras cosas, tradujo a Scholem Aleijem, Mark Rasumny y al poeta y dramaturgo del teatro idisch de Bucarest, el rumano Israel Bercovici. Rennert fue co-fundador, junto con Jalda Rebling en 1987 (Berlín Oriental) del "Día de la cultura yiddish", evento que tuvo importante influencia en el impulso para reconstruir la cultura judía alemana contemporánea.

Ilona Schlott en Leipzig, tenía un programa de canciones en idisch. Dieter Pichowski de Magdeburgo, fue un jazán (cantante liturgico) que trabajó principalmente temas religiosos. En Leipzig hubo durante la RDA una sinagoga activa y un coro, el Leipziger Synagogalchor, cuyos miembros eran todos nichtjüdisch. En la misma ciudad, Hubert Witt, tradujo del idisch en 1978 la colección "Der Fiedler vom Getto".

Desde comienzos de los años ochenta un lugar destacado en la escena cultural de la RDA lo ocupa el berlinés Karsten Troyke (1960- ) y sus canciones en idisch. Troyke aprendió idisch y ha resultado ser el mentor de toda una serie de cantantes originarios de Berlín Oriental.

En 1984, el trío llamado Aufwind, empezó a hacer de las canciones en idisch el foco principal en su instrumentación y presentación. En 1988 el trío original de Claudia Koch, Hardy Reich y Andreas Rohde se ve reforzado con la incorporación de un clarinetista y un bajista, transformándose así en el primer ensamble Klezmer de Alemania del Este después de la guerra. Su trabajo no fue fácil. Era complicado obtener material, las fuentes occidentales y en especial de Estados Unidos no estaba disponible, aunque mantuvieron contacto con el klezmerista Manfred Lemm. Como la ruta hacía Occidente estaba cerrada, Aufwind dirigió su mirada e inspiración hacía el Este en busca de fuentes y músicos, pero sólo se encontraron con rastros fragmentarios de una vida antigua. Algunos de esos sobrevivientes los encontraron en Bucarest y Varsovia, y ellos les animaron a continuar haciendo klezmer. Aufwind perseveró y su último disco “Modne welt” acaba de ser lanzado este año.

Entre los países de Europa del Este, hubo un sentimiento de unión, la frase común era que "Todos estamos en la misma mierda", por otra parte, cada ciudadano de la RDA aprendió ruso porque era una asignatura obligatoria en la escuela. Ocurría lo mismo en Polonia, Hungría, Checoslovaquia y Rumania, y aunque se trataba de un espacio pedagógico impopular (como lo es toda asignatura obligatoria), permitió la comprensión entre estos jalones dispersos de cultura judía bajo la orbita soviética. Además las autoridades no podían prohibir este tipo de actividades sin más, la República Democrática Alemana, se había declarado representante de todas las antiguas víctimas del fascismo y no hubiese podido prohibir las canciones en idisch sin perder su credibilidad.

En 1989 se podía percibir y prever el surgimiento de un enfoque musical por parte de una nueva generación de judíos que rehacían su propia cultura judía correlacionada con el quehacer político de la RDA. Siempre en ese espacio inclasificable, porque depende del ojo del observador, donde el idisch y el klezmer se transforma en herramienta narrativa entre la disidencia y la convivencia con el socialismo. Pero el intento llegó demasiado tarde, la única placa que alcanzó a salir fue el primer disco de Aufwind. Pocos meses después la RDA se disolvió y sus habitantes pasaron a ser ciudadanos de la República Federal Alemana.

El klezmer suena libre y popular tras la caída del Muro de Berlín

Inmediatamente después de la apertura de las fronteras nacionales, en Berlín se inició un "boom del klezmer", y que se extendió rápidamente por Alemania. Surgieron en la capital unificada una serie de nuevas bandas, cada una daba cuenta de necesidades y maneras diferentes. Algunas tenían influencia de la germano-americana Brave Old World, fundada en 1989 o Giora Feidman, como las bandas: Yardniks y Harry´s Freilach. Otras buscaron su propio camino como LA´OM y Di grine Kusine. En el resto de Alemania surgieron cientos de bandas y ensambles de klezmer: Las más conocidas en los 90's fueron Oyfn Veg de Hanover y Klezgoyim de Bremen.

Las razones para este sorprendente éxito de la música klezmer fueron los talleres de circo y las presentaciones de Giora Feidman, Helmut Eisel y Brave Old World, que atraían a cientos de músicos de la república Federal en búsqueda de reencontrarse con su lazo oriental. Por otra parte, también influyó el masivo éxito de la celebre banda de Nueva York, The Klezmatics, que presentó su primer disco "Shvaign" en el Festival de Berlín de 1988 y que fue el comienzo de un gran número de giras de bandas de klezmer norteamericanas que dejaron su huella.

En la actualidad, la oferta alemana de bandas de klezmer es grande, se dice que en todas las ciudades de más de 30 mil habitantes pareciera tener por lo menos una. Y cada una incorpora aspectos locales o de interés de los músicos que la componen.

It's the Gameworks trek. And it's a tradition.

Tonight was our fourth annual evening at Gameworks. This year, it took less then thirty minutes for the small person's focus to turn away from driving and hunting simulators and toward the ticket room. 

A select number of games spit tickets as a reward for a lucky break: dropped coins landing on the color green...on a button marked "cut the cheese"...into an open toilet bowl...onto a miniature mining cart.

They're simple games - almost too simple. Sized specifically for kids, utilizing primary colors. Small people never know how many tickets those machines will spit out - if any. Sometimes one ticket; sometimes fifty. But what they do know is the more tickets they collect, the better the prizes they can trade them for.

My small person relished having full control over the rechargeable card. After a few cursory attempts to get me to play Dance Dance Revolution or Waterski Challenge (both of which I was NOT exceptional at), he decided to focus on the real fun: running the card through the slot that spits out coins, then hustling from the coin machine to a ticket-spitting game.

He went back. And forth. Back. And forth. I watched him racing around, trying new games of chance. Attempting to figure out which one dispensed the most tickets the most often.

I stuffed my pockets with his tickets and tried to look interested as he rode the highs and lows of "how much will I win?" I asked him if he was thirsty. Perhaps he needed a snack. Should I hold his jacket?

Then I realized: the boy was clearly in training for Vegas. 

The excitement, the furor, the "one last try" mentality. Even me waiting on him so he wouldn't get distracted or lose momentum.

Gameworks and I may very well have sown the seeds of a gambling problem tonight.

At least he got some prizes for his trouble. And he bought me a box of candy with some of his proceeds, which I found both generous and in keeping with a blooming high-roller.

(Small person was also one ticket short of the prize he really wanted. But thankfully good judgment prevailed: he didn't ask for a card recharge. This time.)

Vor der südafrikanischen Botschaft stehen zwei Dutzend Menschen, die eine Mahnwache abhalten, um gegen die Gewalt in Simbabwe zu protestieren. Einige Leute rufen ihnen zu, dass es gut sei, dass sie das tun. Die meisten aber gehen nur in die Botschaft, ohne sich für die spärliche Demonstration zu interessieren oder sie spazieren einfach vorbei.

Die Botschaft von Simbabwe hat ihre offene Tür kurzfristig geschlossen, zu heikel schien ihnen ihre derzeitige Situation zu sein, sie befürchteten wohl lauten Protest.

Aber die Botschaft von Myanmar hatte diese Befürchtungen nicht und nutzte die Gelegenheit, sich zu präsentieren. Ich laufe über den Potsdamer Platz und will nach Zehlendorf, weil ich wissen will, wie sich die Botschaft von Myanmar, welches in der letzten Zeit so viele negative Schlagzeilen gemacht hat, darstellt.

Auf dem Weg dorthin lasse ich mich kurz von einem Antik-Markt am Potsdamer Platz ablenken. Während ich neugierig die vielen schönen und unschönen Dinge betrachte, höre ich jemanden neben mir extrem laut husten. Er hat sich an einen grauen Pfeiler gelehnt und ich sehe, wie ihm das Blut so dem Mund strömt, sehr viel Blut. Der Pfeiler sieht aus, als würde er mit hellroter Farbe bespritzt werden. Es sieht wirklich wie Farbe aus, nicht wie Blut. Ich höre eine Frau sagen: „Der stirbt sicher gleich, spätestens morgen.“ Ich bin schockiert und bekomme weiche Knie. Trotzdem bleibe ich auf dem Markt und beruhige mich, indem ich einiges dort kaufe.

Der Rettungswagen kommt schnell, der Mann wird sitzend abtransportiert, er sieht erfreulicherweise noch ziemlich lebendig aus. Mit zwei großen Tüten voller neuer Habseligkeiten fahre ich mit der U-Bahn zur Botschaft von Myanmar in der Thielallee.

Von weitem erkenne ich einen Polizisten und zwei Toiletten-Häuschen, ich war bisher noch nie da gewesen. Als ich durch das Gartentor eintrete, werde ich freundlich von einem sitzenden burmesischen Mann und drei stehenden begrüßt, alle in landesüblicher Kleidung. Eigentlich hatte ich erwartet, dass sie mich fragen, was ich in meinen Tüten habe, es könnte ja auch eine Bombe sein, aber sie bitten mich liebenswürdig herein. Das Botschaftsgebäude, ein unscheinbarer hässlicher Klotz, ist geschlossen.

Im Garten sind Tische und Stühle unter Sonnenschirmen aufgebaut, an der einen Seite befindet sich ein sehr langer Tisch, hinter dem ein paar burmesische Männer und Frauen stehen. Alle sind freundlich, haben aber einen traurigen Blick. Gleich vorn liegen Reise-Prospekte, dann kleine Teppiche, bestickte Bilder, sogar eines mit zwei Micky-Mäusen, kleine Holzschnitzereien und Armbänder und Figuren aus Jade. An der Wand hängen Fotos von goldenen Pagoden, Tempeln, Buddhas, lächelnden Menschen und Palmen am Meer, überall steht geschrieben: „Goldenes Myanmar“. Daneben gibt es etwas zu trinken und zu essen, nur ein Gericht.

Folkloristische Musik dudelt leise durch die kleine Grünanlage, einige Besucher sitzen und reden wenig. Ich bestelle mir diese Nudeln mit etwas Fleisch und Gemüse, es ist lauwarm und schmeckt abgestanden. Während ich da sitze, schaue ich mir die Videoclips an, hübsche Mädchen in Trachten singen wohl harmonisches und schwenken ständig weiße Tücher, viel Landschaft ist zu sehen, Flüsse und Berge und goldene Kuppeln. Alles sieht so friedlich aus, als wären die wirklichen Zustände in Burma nicht vorhanden. Das macht mich langsam innerlich wütend. Eine Idylle wird einem vorgespiegelt als gäbe es überhaupt keine Probleme im Land.

Ich bemerke, dass auf dem Tisch neben mir stapelweise Postkarten und Hefte liegen. Zwei Männer, einer in Schlips und Kragen, der andere etwas dicklich und eine Frau sitzen und unterhalten sich. Sie scheinen deutsche Reiseveranstalter zu sein und mit jemandem muss ich über meinen Ärger reden. Ich frage sie, ob ihnen das Theater hier nicht merkwürdig vorkommt angesichts der eigentlichen politischen und menschlichen Katastrophen dort. Der dickliche und zufrieden wirkende Mann meint, diese Frage hatte er vermeiden wollen, der andere verabschiedet sich schnell und geht.

Eine Minute später sagt er: „Sie fahren doch auch in die Alpen, wenn die Nordsee Hochwasser hat“. Mir verschlägt es die Sprache, er redet weiter: „Sie fahren sicher auch nach Ägypten und Thailand, wo ist da der Unterschied, es gibt überall Probleme“. Ich fühle mich ertappt, ich war schon zweimal in Ägypten und einmal in Thailand. Ich rechtfertige mich sinngemäß, dass ich vor allem hinfahre, um die Menschen kennen zu lernen und mich nicht als einen üblichen Touristen betrachte. Meine Schlagfertigkeit ist mir abhanden gekommen. Wieder redet er etwas von Hochwasser, den Alpen und Ägypten und dass Reisen ein gutes Geschäft sei. Ich versuche zu erwidern, dass es so viel Armut und Elend dort gibt, er winkt ab: „Die gibt es überall und man würde den Menschen dort helfen, wenn man hinfährt, außerdem würde ich doch auch in ein Krankenhaus gehen, wenn mir etwas fehlt“. Den Gedankensprung verstehe ich nicht, ich suche nach Worten und sage: “Hier schon, nur dort würde man die Menschen liegen lassen und nicht behandeln“. Er fängt an sich zu ärgern und ergänzt: “Sie müssten mal mit mir reisen, dann würden sie merken, wie das läuft und wo das Geld liegt“. Schnell entgegne ich: “Ihnen geht es wohl nur um das Geld“. Er ist sauer und murmelt: “Mit so jemanden will ich nicht sprechen“, und schaut demonstrativ weg. Die Frau sagt die ganze Zeit nichts, sie sieht faltig und frustriert aus.

Ich hake nach: „Nicht reden ist das Schlimmste.“, er schweigt. Es war mein Versuch, ein Gespräch in Gang zu halten, aber er schweigt weiter. Ich frage, ob ich mir einige Postkarten nehmen kann, nichts. „Gut, dann nehme ich sie mir und vielen Dank.“ Ich habe ihm gründlich die Laune verdorben und bin sicher, das war der Richtige dafür. Meine Laune ist aber auch nicht gerade bestens. Ich setze mich wieder, die Musikvideos sehen immer noch genauso aus. Die Leute am Tisch reden über das Essen und das Wetter.

Der dickliche Mann und die Frau stehen auf und verlassen das Grundstück. Auch ich sehe keinen Grund mehr zu bleiben, ich laufe an den Souvenir-Tischen entlang bis nach vorn, wo die Reise-Kataloge liegen. Der burmesische Mann bittet mich höflich, ob ich Interesse habe, nach Myanmar zu reisen. “Es ist wunderschön und das sei kein Problem“. Ich frage zurück, ob es wirklich kein Problem sei und ob ich mich im Land frei bewegen könne. „Keine Sorge, es gibt nur gewisse Grenzen“. „Welche Grenzen?“, ich bin neugierig, was er antwortet. „Es gibt ein paar ethnische Probleme und Malaria und Krankheiten, aber in den Touristengebieten ist alles sicher“, fügt er etwas schuldbewusst hinzu. „Und wenn ich mich gegen Malaria impfen lasse, kann ich dann im Land herum fahren?“ „Nein, es gibt Grenzen.“, er lächelt gequält. Er fängt an mir Leid zu tun und ich lenke seine Aufmerksamkeit auf die Kataloge. Erleichtert gibt er mir den einen und dann noch den anderen und eine CD. „Sie werden sehen, wie schön es hier ist, kommen Sie doch“. Ich verabschiede mich, er und die umstehenden Männer nicken, als ich gehe.

Vor der Botschaft stehen noch der dickliche Mann und die Frau und rauchen. Dann begrüßt er noch einen Geschäftsmann, anscheinend ist er einer der wichtigen Ansprechpartner im burmesischen Reisegeschäft, er wird sehr respektvoll behandelt. Ein Botschaftsmitarbeiter macht ihm noch eine kurze Aufwartung. Mir fällt ein, dass ich vergessen hatte, als er mir sagte, dass man den Menschen in Burma helfen würde, wenn man dorthin reist, ihn damit zu konfrontieren, warum denn die Hilfe aus dem Ausland nach dem verheerenden Wirbelsturm größtenteils von der Militärjunta abgelehnt wurde. Es hämmert in meinem Kopf, warum war es mir nicht eingefallen, es wäre das wichtigste Argument gewesen und ich fühle mich mies.

Ein Taxi fährt vor, der Mann und die Frau steigen ein, sie würdigen mich keines Blickes. Ich stehe da und rauche auch eine Zigarette. Mir kommt wieder das Bild von dem vielen Blut in den Sinn, das der Mann ausgehustet hatte. Ich sollte unbedingt mit dem Rauchen aufhören.

In der U-Bahn ist es voll, neben mir stehen zwei junge Mädchen, die ein Buch „Der Gallische Krieg“ in der Hand haben. Ich frage, ob sie das gerade lesen, sie bejahen. “Es geht um die Schlachten und die Stämme, die sich bekriegen und die sich verbünden, die Verschwörungen und die erbitterten Kämpfe und Völkerwanderungen“, erzählen sie: „Und das noch auf Latein, sehr anstrengend.“, lachen sie.

Dann fange ich an, mir die Prospekte anzuschauen, der eine zeigt fröhliche Kinder auf dem Umschlag und heißt:„Na klar, Myanmar“. Ich blättere darin und stolpere als erstes über ein Zitat von Rousseau: “Freiheit ist nicht gefangen sein! Die Freiheit des Menschen liegt nicht darin, dass er tun kann, was er will, sondern dass er nicht tun muss, was er nicht will.“ Ich bin erstaunt. Daneben steht ein kurzer Artikel mit der Überschrift, dass sich das Militär bedient, darin steht: “Es sie ein Phänomen, dass in den reichen Ländern Menschen an die Macht drängen, die Geld haben, in den armen aber, Menschen, die Geld wollen. Und wenn sie es dann erst einmal haben, hätten sie auch die Mittel, es dem Volk zurück zu geben.“ Was für eine Logik.

Darunter steht ein kleiner Abschnitt zum Thema Menschenrechte. „Beklagenswert. Sicher. Aber im Gegensatz zu Saudi-Arabien sei Myanmar ein Paradies und jede Regierung, die den Saudis den roten Teppich ausrollt, diskreditiert sich selbst in ihrem Anspruch auf Menschenrechte. Und außerdem dürfen Burmesen ausreisen, bekommen aber keine Visa im Ausland.“

In anderen Artikeln steht: „Dass es viele Länder mit Militärregimes gibt und dass das Regime in Myanmar eine Zersplitterung des Landes verhindert hat, mit Unterstützung der Mönche.“ „Der Westen würde die Regierung diabolisieren, dabei handele es sich um eine gelenkte Demokratie.“ Und: “Die Opposition, allen voran Aung San Suu Kyi hätte keine Kraft mehr, und wie sollte diese sture Frau die ethnischen Minderheiten bei Laune halten, sie hat ihnen nichts versprochen.“ „Außerdem hat man Angst vor äußeren Geiern, die Investoren aus dem Ausland, die Burma zu einem Billigland machen wollen.“ Zum Thema Militär steht da noch: “Die Herrscher in Myanmar sind der Garant der moralischen Ordnung, das Verständnis der Armee sei ein Erkämpfer und Wahrer der Unabhängigkeit zu sein.“ Ich bin fassungslos.

Aber der Katalog ist clever gemacht, erst ein bisschen Kritik, ein paar Reiseberichte, nach dem Motto: “Und wir fuhren doch.“ Und dann wird die Notwendigkeit der Diktatur als einen Segen für die Bevölkerung deklariert.

Das schlechte Gewissen, das einem gemacht wird, weil das Geld, das die Touristen bringen, auch Hilfe für die Menschen dort bedeutet, hat nun auch mich erwischt, sogar die genauen „Geldflüsse“ werden beschrieben. Und immer wieder: „Das Glücksgefühl! Vom Zweifel zur Gewissheit, gut, dass wir gefahren sind, schließlich sei man auch in die DDR gefahren und die Begegnung mit den Menschen stiftet überall Frieden.“ Das bringt mich schon zum Grübeln, aber ich finde es fast erpresserisch.

In dem anderen Prospekt sind auch schöne Fotos zu sehen und nur Berichte über: „Den tief verwurzelten Glauben, die schöne unberührte Landschaft, Märchenwelten ohne Mc Donalds und Coca Cola“. Besonders: “Das stilvolle Unterwegssein auf dem Ayeyarwady, jenseits der Touristenpfade.“ Der Katalog ist auch nicht ganz neu, das Delta ist vom Wirbelsturm stark betroffen und ganze Ortschaften sind zerstört, nicht einmal Hilfsorganisationen dürfen dort arbeiten. Dass es manche dennoch tun, ist sehr mutig. Mir fällt auf, dass eine Stelle geschwärzt ist, da geht es um Individual-Reisen und längere Visa.

Was für ein Hohn und eine Menschenverachtung sprechen aus den Worten dieser Tourismus-Kataloge mit den Fotos zufriedener lächelnder Bewohner, wenn man weiß, dass sie hungern, zum Teil keine Hütten mehr haben, kaum Hilfe vom Staat bekommen, die Armee und zehntausende von Kindersoldaten Gewalt und Terror ausüben, die Gefängnisse voll, Repressionen und Folter an der Tagesordnung sind. Eines der ärmsten Länder der Welt, während sich die Machthaber im Dschungel in ihrer neuen Stadt im Reichtum verschanzen. Selbst für die Mönche ist dies nicht mehr hinnehmbar.

„Dem Buddhismus sei man hingebungsvoll verbunden, der die Idee der Wiedergeburt beinhaltet. Das Karma ist abhängig vom diesseitigen Tun und das jetzige Leben sei nur verursacht durch das Handeln in einem früheren und im nächsten Leben kann es dann besser werden.“

Ich habe wieder das Blut vor Augen. Zu Hause lege ich die CD ein, sie ist kaputt.
