City's 100% home record was the first thing to go as September turned out to be a miserable month for all Canary supporters.

Cardiff performed the classic smash-and grab raid at Carrow Road on 1st September to win 2-1. Simon Lappin got the hosts off to the perfect start after 12 minutes, but the Bluebirds clawed their way back into the game to draw level through Peter Whittingham on 64 minutes, and with just six minutes to go Roger Johnson sealed the points for the visitors with a free header from a corner.

Following the international break City got back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Carrow Road - David Strihavka scoring what would prove to be his only goal for the club with fifteen minutes to play.

Charlton away on 18th September was the night that I realised Peter Grant had to go. The Addicks were there for the taking but for some reason the Canary boss thought it would be a much better idea to keep his strikers on the bench. Two late, hotly-disputed penalties later we were 2-0 down and I was on the way out of the ground - only the second time I have left a City game early. Oh and Dion got sent-off for headbutting Danny Mills.

The Wolves game at Molineux that followed will go down in history as one of the most inept team performances in recent memory. Two more red cards followed from Jason Shackell and the idiotic Julien Brellier, who managed to pick up two bookings within about ten seconds of each other.

Three days later the Canaries travelled to Eastlands to meet Manchester City in the Carling Cup and put on a much more assured display - only to be undone by Georgias Samaras' last minute winner for the Premier League side.

September was rounded off with another defeat, this time at home to Sheffield Wednesday, to leave Grant and his charges hovering perilously closer to the dop zone.

Monthly Stats

Games played - 6.

Won - 1.

Lost - 5.

Drawn - 0.

Goals Scored - 2.

Goals Conceded - 8.

Win % - 16.67%

Position after last league game - 21st.

Monthly verdict

A truly miserable month, but it wasn't about to get any better...

Check back tomorrow for the review of October, featuring Scunthorpe United, QPR, Bristol City, Burnley and West Brom.

15 - Total league wins (10 at Carrow Road, 5 away from home).

17th - Position in the final league table.

19th - Position if the league table was based purely on away results. Ipswich would be 22nd and relegated.

I should make it clear right off the bat I'm not a big fan of it. Don't get me wrong I understand the principle, and the intention particularly to minimise clubs buying their way out of trouble throughout the season, but in my humble opinion it doesn't work.

All it has done is condense the time deals can be completed, making it a seller's market and agent's dream, increasing prices in an already over-inflated market. That's the situation and I suppose I just have to get over it.

That's pretty much the only positive that could be taken from yesterday's game against Bury.

My word we were lucky today. Missing an open goal after 40 seconds wasn't exactly the best way to start the game and we created enough chances in the first five minutes alone to put Bury to the sword.

The starting line-up implied an attacking 3-5-2 formation, so come kick-off it was a bit baffling to see Darel Russell at right back.

With Ched Evans still at Manchester City Chris Martin was given an unexpected start, and on this showing I don't think we'll be seeing him again any time soon.

There was no room on the bench for Chris Brown (rumored to be off to Preston in today's papers) or David Strihavka (how bad must he be in training?), but there was a seat for Ryan Jarvis, back from his loan spell at Kilmarnock.

So onto the game itself. I don't really want to dwell on it. It was pretty dire. I took a friend with me who hadn't been to see Norwich before, and I might have to try pretty hard to get him to go again!

There was no urgency, not enough movement, no creativity and we looked ridiculously predictable and sluggish.

The longer the game went on the less likely City looked like scoring, the more confident Bury became, but to concede a goal from a set piece again, and with not one but two unmarked at the back post it unforgivable.

Ginger Pele popped up with the equaliser, and if Hucks had scored his one on one with a couple of minutes left then we would have well and truly gotten away with it.

The long and the short of it is we're still in the hat so let's see who we've got next - assuming we can get a result at Gigg Lane of course.

Tuesday sees the opening of the January transfer window, the only time between now and the summer where clubs can sign players on permanent deals (apart from free agents of course).

Historically not a lot has really happened in this time. You tend to get the odd big-money move but usually gossip and speculation far exceeds reality.

Saying that though there are some relatively big names in the Premier League who could be on the move.

Nicolas Anelka will almost certainly find himself with a new club before 1st February. Chelsea, Manchester United and AC Milan have all been linked with 'Le Sulk', and personally I think he'll end up in London filling in for Didier Drogba at the Bridge.

Across the capital Jens Lehmann could also find himself in new employment. Wolfsburg are the latest club to be linked so look out for him in the Bundesliga before too long, especially as Arsenal have effectively now opened the door for him to leave.

If Lehmann exits Arsenal it leaves a nice big space in the squad for a new keeper. Celtic's Artur Boruc is the smart money to fill it, but I'd not be too surprised (and also quite pleased if truth be told) to see former Canary Robert Green in the Gunner's goal either.

Closer to home and it's a completely different situation. With City still in the mire it'll be just as interesting to see who leaves Colney via the back door than who walks in through the front.

Paul Gallagher (currently on loan at Dunfermline) has made no secret of his desire to stay in Scotland.

Julien Brellier has apparently been spotted in Scotland recently, rumours that he too could be moving back to whence he came.

Simon Lappin and Ian Murray (who himself feels his days are numbered) have also been linked with moves north of the border, but I can't see clubs paying much for them.

And what about Ryan Jarvis? And David Strihavka?

The four loan signings are all likely to extend their stay in Norfolk. Matty Pattison looks the most likely to sign a permanent deal you would think, with Mo Camara, Jimmy Smith and Ched Evans staying on loan until the end of the season.

And then there's Martin Taylor. The whole "will he, won't he?" debate has more than a little of the Huckerby about it. Birmingham have said he can go, but QPR are the only club that have had an offer accepted - only according to Norwich he doesn't want to go QPR and we won't be increasing our offer.

It's a mess. A big, nasty mess. For what it's worth I still think he'll roll into Carrow Road, but it'll go down to the wire.

And I see we've also been linked with Callum Davenport again. One thing's for sure - it's going to be an interesting month.

Ok let's get down to business - and the January transfer window to be more precise.

One thing I can't deny though is that sometimes it can be pretty interesting, and the last couple of weeks have been the busiest I can remember at Carrow Road transfer-wise for quite a while.

I'm sure the departure of Julien Brellier didn't come as a surprise to too many people. When the Frenchman arrived at Carrow Road he was touted as a successor to Youssef Safri, but a combination of injuries and his own stupidity (the red card in that infamous game at Molineux is, to me at least, one of the very low points of the last year) meant he never really got going. I just hope the fans who forked out for the massive 'Le Juge' flag kept their receipt.

It wasn't a shock to see David Strihavka on his way either. He really struggled to make an impact at City, and given that Watford had already turned him away following a trial perhaps giving him a four year deal wasn't the best piece of business - although by my reckoning if you had '22 Strihavka' on the back of your shirt you'd have forked out nearly £50 for it so maybe we got some of it back eh?

If the Strihavka signing wasn't the best piece of business in recent memory then what price the sale of Chris Brown to Preston for £400,000 being one of the best? The former Sunderland man cost the club £275,000 last January and after only scoring once in a couple of dozen appearances was moved on for a tidy profit of £125,000. Not bad at all. (Maybe Preston know something we don't and Brown will come back to haunt us on 2nd February, we'll have to see).

The exit that has divided supporters more than any other is that of Joe Lewis to Peterborough United, also for £400,000 (plus sell-on clause). Some feel we let him go too early and that by giving him a chance and maybe a run in the first team we could have had a star in the making, which is not a view I'd subscribe to.

At 20 time is hardly against him, but with David Marshall and Matthew Gilks ahead of him in the pecking order first team opportunities at the club were always going to be limited. Add Steve Arnold and England Youth internationals Declan Rudd and Jed Steer to the mix and City are blessed with (potentially) a number of good quality goalkeepers which should see us through for years to come.

I bet there won't be many other clubs who can sell their third choice goalkeeper (who has never made a first team appearance remember) for just shy of half a million pounds, and if for that reason alone I think it's a good deal all round.

Let's not forget another goalkeeper who left the club recently, Paul Gallacher, who had his contract terminated on New Year's Eve. So that's five squad players out of the back door, but I'm a little concerned about who's coming in - or rather who isn't.

The permanent signing of Matty Pattison from Newcastle was expected, and gives us an extra option either on the left-hand side of midfield or through the middle. I've been pretty impressed with what I've seen of him so far.

We also expected Mo Camara's loan from Derby to be extended so no surprises there. I was very happy to see us bring in the excellent Ryan Bertrand from Chelsea, who could also give us another option down the left-hand side.

It's good to see Ched Evans back as well. Even at the start of the week it looked like he was going to stay at Eastlands, but fortunately Sven has let him come out to play.

It doesn't look like anything's going to happen with Valentin Iliev, which makes it even more important that a deal with Martin Taylor is resolved quickly. I'm still quietly confident that Taylor will sign on the dotted line, but I'm getting more and more nervous with each passing day that he doesn't sign. I've got a little nagging concern that we'll see him turning up at the Walker's Stadium or, heaven forbid, Portman Road. Again, only time will tell.

What I'm really nervous about is where our goals are going to come from. Fair enough we have scored in our last 11 games, but we haven't scored more than once since beating Plymouth 2-1 on 4th December and missed an absolute hat-full of chances against Bury last week alone.

The only striker I've seen us linked with is Newcastle's Shola Ameobi, who would be an excellent acquisition and a quality player at this level, but Sam Allardyce leaving St James' Park might have just ruined any chance we may have had to get him.

So it's Barnsley away this weekend. Whenever I think of Barnsley and Oakwell I go back to April 2002, and our 2-0 win. City were cheered on by 4,500 travelling supporters and it was the game that really opened the door for us to get into the play-offs. Happy days. We'd take now wouldn't we?

OTBC.

Are you a supporter of the transfer window? What do you think about the signings Glenn Roeder has made so far? Who will be next out of the door? Will Taylor sign? I'd love to know what you think, so leave your comments below...
