Unfortunately it's sold out now (it was a pretty hot summer item).

Been looking for a good dress that was inspired by this look, if anyone has any links please add them by way of a comment, and if I like them I will feature you and credit you in an upcoming post.

You can however check out the item and also other items you may like by clicking HERE.

I made this card as a set for a friend's birthday. I was really excited by how it came out considering how odd the color combo seemed to me at first. It is a very simple design based on the SEI thank you card I blogged about previously. As you can tell this is from the experimental stage of picture taking, which I am still working on.

The swirly, twirly, flowery, leafy pattern that has a lot of brides taking notice, but what exactly is this you ask? It is Damask of course! The Damask pattern is no longer just meant for drapes and upholstery, it has made a huge dent in the wedding world and may just influence you too! You can use the pattern in your wedding on anything from the invitations to the programs, and table settings. Be creative with it! I have been witnessing the Damask pattern everywhere, but some of my favorite items are on Etsy. (You know how much I love Etsy!) Did you use the Damask pattern in your wedding?

Invitations provide guests the first impression of your big day. They set the tone and can create anticipation for the wedding. My fiance and I looked into printing options in the US and India. We have decided to go with a vendor in the US because of our time frame and the flexibility we are looking for. Here are some learnings and resources we found along the way.

An art piece

I have decided to have 3 inserts for the invitation. The first insert is a peacock art piece with a quote from the Rig Veda. The second is the wedding and reception invite and the third is the reply postcard. We decided to have an art insert to set the mood for the invitation and leave people with a takeaway that they could actually keep and display in their home.

Types of printing

http://www.printing-machine.net/types-of-printing.html

Engraved

This printing technique creates indentation in the paper to create an elegant finish. This is the most expensive of the printing techniques.

Letterpress

This printing technique creates indentation in the paper to create an elegant finish. This is the second most expensive of the printing techniques.

Thermography

This printing technique creates texture by lifting the ink above the surface of the paper. This is a great affordable option and has an elegant feel to it.

Flat/Digital

This has a modern feel to it and is very affordable. There is no texture in the printing technique, but you can pick a textured paper.

Vendors in US

Check out invitations in person. You will learn so much more. There is only so much online scouting you can do. Take a look at these vendors, some are retailers and some are printing sources.

There were a few vendors in India we looked at. After looking at a few the patterns and styles started repeating themselves. The design aesthetic didn't match what we were looking for. Nonetheless, there are some pretty cool traditional options.

I had a bit of an awkward moment today involving myself, a fabric store and it’s geriatric emp

I had a bit of an awkward moment today involving myself, a fabric store and it's geriatric employees. I probably should have known today was going to be an odd day when I woke up bright and early at 7:37am from a stange somewhat reoccuring dream. I tried to shake off the bad dream by finshing off my book from this week - that's right - I read a book per week (which for the record is way above and beyond my 2008 goal to read one to two books per month - I'm currently at 24 on the year) and getting a head start on the day with errand running instead of Sweatpants Sunday.

Things started off easy enough with a trip to Storables for a jewelry organizer (don't be a hater - and yes, I did need to clean, polish, sort and organize my jewelry). I had checked online to see what some of my options might be and to confirm that they did in fact have organizers that I would like. I really like the principal behind Storables but I think I am just too far into my geekness that today I really found that place overwhelming. I circled the jewelry organizer section (yes there is a section dedicated to these items) 3 times including picking up each item, comparing it along side other options, and finally just forced myself to grab the system that utilized the containing of the most items while using the smallest space.

After this stressful Storables experience I headed to a couple of my favorite jewlery boutiques and rewarded my hard work with some fantastic earrings. Yes, I validated myself with a gift - I'm considerate of myself that way. While it was a beautiful day downtown I resisted the urge to sit in the sun and consume gelato and powered on with my errand running - I visited my favorite bookstore and then was off to head to the suburbs for a fabric store adventure.

Yesterday I headed to a suburban chain fabric store with a very specific need in mind. I wanted to find a cotton of heavy knit (no flannel or fleece) black and white damask fabric for some apartment crafts. For those of you not in the know here is what damask looks like:

Yesterday's fabric store adventure was unsuccessful but I wasn't ready to give up. So today I headed to a bigger aka massive fabric store. While searching through the cottons I found a sales woman in her late 40's and asked her to direct me to what is universally known as the aforementioned damask pattern. She informed me that she didn't know what damask was - she then asked another woman who was in her late 50's and she directed me to the apparel fabric section noting they would have what I was looking for. Awesome.

I head to apparel fabrics and while searching on my own for a bit I am once again not finding damask. So I suck it up once again and approach a sales woman who was probably in her late 70's. She makes me repeat my request for black and white damask no less than 5 times. After the fifth time I have slowly and loudly mentioned my request she replies back with "DENIM?" - no, not denim. Damask - D-A-M-A-S-K. She then solicits help from a woman in her late 80's with a nasty cold and sneezing fit (let's hope it doesn't turn to pneumonia because then I think she's going to be in a bad state of affairs). This pair of golden girls say they don't have damask but they have something close to the cloth in muslin. I try to explain that damask is a vintage french pattern not a certain heavy fabric. They seem confused or senial and say I should go to home fabrics because they might have something like that. Good lord.

I head to home fabrics and find a close "enough" fabric that should work. I'm frustrated that no one seems to be very helpful. I'm slightly panicky because I am in my mid-20's and seem to know about fabric patterns than these women who were probably old enough to be french vintage. I'm just ready to get something and get out. Then I see it. There on the table of marked down small bold fabrics is the more white than black modern clean looking damask I have pictured in my mind. THANK GOODNESS. I head over to pick it up and a lovely gentleman finally asks me if he can help (mind you this is the first bit of employee driven customer service I have experienced) which he does by measuring out the remaining 2 and 5/6 yards of fabric for me and saying that while taking the last of the bolt would usually be 50% off this weekend is some sort of sale so my purchase will be 70% off.

Sweet vindication. I paid $11 for $37 worth of fabric which made me very happy. It didn't really erase my poor experience with the sales women or the icky feeling that I am somehow an old fabric buying, craft making single spinster but it did make me smile in knowing that I will not have to venture into another fabric store for a while...

I LOVE paper, boxes, envelopes, office supplies. love them. the smell of ink, the texture of the paper, the promise of possibility. And I love pear green, black & white, damask patterns & grosgrain ribbon.

So when I started my business - Nanine Hartzenbusch Photography - Documentary Family Portraiture I needed to come up with pretty packaging for my clients' photos. I researched & over-researched the "packaging" piece of my business. Had a lot of fun doing so. (probably too much fun!)

and here's what I have come up with... When you book a session and order prints from me, you'll receive your goodies in these gorgeous packages.

One of my goodgoodgood friends from college is 6 weeks away from Baby #2 - and the nursery has yet to be decorated! Her husband is none too excited to paint, and she is stymied trying to pick a color scheme...

Roommates to the rescue! For her baby shower, since she has plenty of baby girl clothes and stuff from Baby #1, we have decided to perform makeover surgery to the baby room.

I came up with a few initial ideas, and I'm working with her to figure out exactly what she wants in order to make this a beautiful nursery. I'm a little bit nervous for my first attempt at decorating someone else's house, but I'm super excited to work through the requirements process (there I go with my consultant speak...), execute the vision, and see the finished product.

[caption id="attachment_140" align="aligncenter" width="471" caption="i call this... "pretty in pink""][/caption]

I really like this pink option, because it would flow well in her house: going from a yellow entry/living room/hallway to the two girls' bedrooms, one of which is a mossy green with pink accents and the other our work in progress. It's hard to see in this picture the wallpaper I chose, but it's a great Graham & Brown print, "Exotic", with salmon-y pink peacocks (if you visit the link, make sure you click the thumbnail of the wallpaper - the actual picture on the site doesn't do it justice). My vision is to wallpaper one or two walls in this fun print, then paint the remaining walls a matching pink.

[caption id="attachment_141" align="aligncenter" width="434" caption="a little more funky..."the color purple""][/caption]

This is another idea, which I really love, but may not be the best choice to create a uniform flow in her house. The concept is essentially the same, with the gorgeous purple damask wallpaper from Graham & Brown on one or two walls (it's a raised print - really cool), and the other walls a complementary lilac.

As I work with her I'll create more idea boards and be sure to post them here, as well as the work in progress and final result!

Although there aren't formalized roles for bridesmaids in Indian weddings, they add visual drama and provide great support to the bride. Bridesmaids look great in the bride's procession to the mandap for the jai maal. They can carry silver thalis with the garlands, aarti, and flowers.

I just finished the saree designs for my bridesmaids...yayy! They are going to look soo beautiful. I am using a palette from green to blue. The girls will wear maroon blouses and have a peacock feather in their hair or on the saree as a broach.

Every great event has an underlying theme–something that ties together the different details.

Every great event has an underlying theme--something that ties together the different details. A theme can be a color, fruit, flowers, animals, time in history, or a country. Picking a theme can create anxiety, but once it's chosen all the other decisions fall into place.

Pick a theme

To choose a theme, try a variety of exercises.

1. Talk to your fiancee about things that are meaningful in your relationship or interests you both share

2. Create a list of words that gets you excited and see of there are any patterns

3. Rip out images from magazines that get you excited

Interpret your theme

A theme influences the flowers, food, cloth, mandap design, bridesmaids dresses, bridal dress, centerpieces, guest favors, and groom's car. It is important to have your theme show through in these elements but also not be so overstated that the event looks tacky. For example, if you pick a peacock theme, don't do everything in peacocks--colors, bouquets, centerpieces. Leave something up to the imagination. And pick other design elements that complement the peacock.

Peacocks, Damask, and Rajasthan

My fiancee and I started by exploring several different themes--water, indian temples, autumn, rustic country, indoor garden. We have arrived at a combination of elements to create a warm, rich, and modern indian wedding experience-- the elements are peacocks, damask, and rajasthan. Peacocks are elegant signature pieces that bring green into our color palette. Rajasthan, a region in India, brings adobe orange hues into our palette and a regalness to our decor and clothing embroidery. Damask is the modernizing element that helps reinterpret traditional Indian designs.

july 17, 2008 the difference between a fad and a trend: a fad is a small-scale, short-term event, while a trend has duration and leaks to mainstream (kudos to the wikitionary). an obvious trend in baroque-style floral and chandelier patterns, damask, lace, scroll designs, and concepts alike appear more often than ever in fashion as well as interior design. the cameo emblem seems next in line - photo from martha stewart (the trendsetting genius) - and im sure we'll be spotting it in mainstream soon enough.

When I met Kim, she wasn't quite sure what form she wanted her invitation to take. She new she wanted a black and white damask design.

Going through my invitation portfolio, both she and Rob were immediately drawn to the Z-Card wrap with the vellum band wrap that holds the enclosure cards in place, at the same time it holds the closed invitation together. Well, I think Rob was more drawn to the workings of the vellum wrap than anything, and after much debate, he got his band wrap!

I love the custom stamps that show off a little bit of the design on the front of the envelope, and the "R.S.V.P." stamp on the response card is so cute, but still as elegant as the rest of the invitation.

The custom thank you cards carry out the theme.
