I am very concerned about cyberbullying and have read so many recent news summaries about how bullying has changed, can you talk about how bullying has changed so I can talk to my kids about it?

The Internet has changed the playground-bully into the in-my-bedroom-bully. It’s true, the line between school life and home life is gone. Kids can no longer leave the social pressures, cliques, bullies, snoodiness and the other highlights of adolescence at school.

Now the social scene follows students home, into their bedrooms, and can be turned on at any moment. No, in fact it is never turned off, because you never know who is going to post something mean on your wall next. Here, I want to give a brief overview of how bullying has changed for the net-generation so parents are more equipped to handle it and help their kids deal with it. Today, bullying/cyberbullying is:

1) Creative

Options for a bully circa 1980:

-steal lunch money
-call someone names/say mean things to their face
-call someone names/say mean things behind their back
-punch them in the face/kick them/pinch them/ physically assault them
-punch them in the face/kick them/pinch them/ physically assault their friend or usually younger, relative.
-write a nasty note and pass it around class, leave it on their locker
-stick your tongue out at them

Options for a bully today: (just from the news stories I found on bullying alone, I could think of many more that have not been reported on)

“” Everything from above, plus
-write a nasty note or rumor on their facebook wall for everyone to see
-put up embarrassing pictures of the person on your school’s social network
-digitally impose the person’s head onto a naked body and pass it around like it is real
-submit their name/picture to a site like “Hot or Not” for strangers to rate how ugly the person is
-create a website dedicated to how much you hate that person
-bate them into writing a mean/weird IM chat and post it all over MySpace or the school.
-Create a fake user, pretend to be hot, flirt with the person and then break up with them/tell them you hate them/ tell them they are too ugly for you.
-Send mean text messages
-harass their avatars or video game players on gaming websites
It is incredibly sad, but the Internet has brought thousands of ways to bully someone without ever being caught. Parents need to know that their child could be bullied in a number of ways online, through phones and even through video games.

2) Instant

Before, if you got in a fight at school, or found out you were not invited to a party, you were able to come home and vent about to mom/ dad/ sister/ brother, get a snack and cool off. Now, if you are mad at someone, you can instantly send a text message to your social networking profile to post a mean comment. Now there is no ‘off’ time and the second something happens, everyone knows about it because they all get alerts or texts from automated news feeds or plugged-in friends. Teens are checking these services CONSTANTLY, so before what took a few days to spread, now can take a few minutes.

3) Permanent

Some things, like postings on your wall, video, a text message or email, you can delete. Other things, such as photos or social network announcements can be up there forever or until the writer removes them.

Also, even if they post a superimposed picture for five minutes on a school network before it is removed, others can easily download it and repost it or pass it around by email undetected—and as with all gossip, even the most factless based rumors hurt a reputation.

4) Accessible

The whole point of many social networks, texting and websites is to be connected to people you would not normally be connected to. I always say that ‘privacy settings’ should really be called ‘lace curtain settings’ because you never know who is going to get into your profile the back way (MySpace Pedophiles). Before, nerds, jocks or drama queens went to different parties and traveled in different circles. Now, the ‘great connector that is the Internet makes everyone’s personal information and attention accessible on the same sites.

5) Cool

The more popular kids have always made fun of the ‘uncool’ kids, but now bullying is easily made ‘fun’ for everyone. At Juicy Campus, a website all about spreading gossip and rumors, or Hot or Not.com, users can vote on the attractiveness of submitted pictures and make students who would not normally ‘bully’ or gossip attracted to the idea. Hot or Not makes it cool and fun to judge people based on their appearence and is very popular with my generation.

Even Gangs are now using Social Networking Sites to recruit and organize activities…seriously.

6) Buffered

It is really hard to walk up to someone and say to them: “You are a fat slut.” It is much easier to write that on someone’s Facebook wall—which someone did. Technology provides a way for students to be mean even more ‘behind the back.’ Many times, you can even post pictures, videos or send messages anonymously! This has changed the face of bullying because it allows people to be mean and not face the consequences—they can’t get punched back, they can hide it from parents and teachers by posting anonymously and do not have to say it to people, they can simply type a comment in a moment of passion when they are alone in their room!

It is really important to talk about these new aspects of bullying. I bring these issues up with all of the kids I mentor and teen groups I speak to. Make sure to discuss with them the ramifications of letting a friend take a sexy picture, disabling the Facebook wall or what would happen if they got in a fight with a friend.

Also give them resources if they know another student is being bullied. With the recent school shootings, it is important for kids to have a place to anonymously report bullying of any kind. They can do this at: ancomm.com.

Anyway, where to begin? in ecstasy has been doing the rounds and so far has been met with mostly favourable reviews. Phew! The anxiety associated with having a new book out there is almost indescrible- you await the reaction (and having had previous experience you know 'you can't please all the people all the time'!!) But here is the most exciting news of all. in ecstasy was bought by a Canadian publisher (yep- that means North American rights!!) and is now in the process of being edited for the North American market. What does that mean? Don't they speak English too? Of course they do, but the publisher wants to make changes to suit the target audience over there.

What that means is this... when I write my books they are distinctly Australian- nay, West Australian. Why? Because I love WA. I think it is a great place to live. I love writing about its beaches and lifestyle. I remember as a teenager reading Tim Winton's Cloudstreet and revelling in the recognition of places like Subiaco- landscapes I knew and could readily identify. Given that so much of the work I read as a kid was American, or British it was liberating to see home in the pages of a beautiful book. (NOTE: to date Cloudstreet still remains in my Top Ten). So I wanted to pay it forward. Give new teenagers a chance to connect with their own environment.  After all Young Adult fiction often serves to provide a mirror for these kids- with regards to issues they face, and choices they make and an identifiable environment often makes that even more accessible.

So, both Destroying Avalon and in ecstasy are set in Western Australia, but for both of them the environment doesn't contribute to the challenges these kids face, as much as provide a backdrop against which this plays out. The themes in both books I believe are universal- cyber bullying is a world wide phenomenon- and alarmingly, still on the rise. Experimentation with drugs, peer pressure and social acceptance has been around since, well, since forever, and will continue as young adults seek to find their place in the world.

What's this got to do with North American publishing rights? Glad you asked. What it means is the Canadian publisher wishes to locate the action somewhere in North America- so their audience will readily identify with it. I guess I was lucky, I didn't have to even think about it because of my own thoughts on the subject (see paragraph 3). So now I will be working with my Canadian editor to make the changes for this. I don't know what else will be adapted or changed- we will see as it goes along. But it's an exciting time for in ecstasy- a reinvention of self, already!

There has been work afoot to take Destroying Avalon into another market- with an offer being made to publish it in another country. But as I don't have official confirmation (and this one involves a translation!) I'll update when the contract arrives.

The babies are entering the big wide world. All I can do is kiss them and wish them luck with their new audiences!

West Mercia Constabulary's internet safety fortnight began on Monday and in order to raise awareness of the campaign to beat cyber-bullies, the officers have donned lycra suits as they cycle and run from Land's End to John O'Groats.

Det Chf Insp Sean Paley, Insp Richard Horder and Sgt Bob Twigg left Land's End yesterday and will be stopping in at schools along their route to speak to parents and children about the campaign.

As the trio complete their journey, their colleagues in the Vale will be doing their bit on a local level so that children and young people know how to stay safe on the internet.

Over the next two weeks officers will visit schools and various locations across the area to hand out leaflets promoting the campaign.

The rapid rise in the popularity in social networking sites such as Bebo, Facebook and Myspace have given teenagers an easy way of meeting hundreds of new friends online but the force campaign warns that not every one of the new acquaintances will have the child's best interests at heart.

Det Supt Martin Lakeman, head of public protection for West Mercia Constabulary, said: "There is a need to promote internet safety with the increasing popularity of social networking sites.

"While the internet is a fantastic way of meeting new people and keeping in touch with family and friends, people need to remember there is a need to exercise caution and should be very wary of putting too many personal details on the internet."

The campaign is also about educating parents on the dangers that the internet can present and it is likely that in many cases the parent is unaware of how much personal information is being broadcast on the internet by their child.

Det Supt Lakeman added: "For many parents, social networking sites like Bebo, Facebook and Myspace are alien environments that they don't know much about, which means they are not sure what safety advice to give to their children.

"It's not easy to talk to a young person about their online social networking as they regard it as their private domain. However, because of the public nature of these sites, it is important that parents understand what is involved.

"The whole emphasis of this safety programme is to ensure children and parents understand potential risks posed by the internet balanced against the fantastic knowledge which can be gained from it."

West Mercia police have also come up with five simple rules of how to stay SMART online - l Safe - Do not give out personal information such as full name and address or phone number.

l Meeting - Meeting up with someone you have only met online is potentially dangerous.

l Accepting - Be careful when accepting files from unknown sources as they may contain a virus.

l Reliable - Some people on internet social networking sites will lie about who they are.

l Tell - Tell a parent or carer if someone is making you feel uncomfortable or worried.

One cyber-bullying case currently being given news coverage across the world is that of 13-year-old American girl Megan Meier.

Megan's next-door neighbour Lori Drew, aged 49, is standing trial accused of creating a fake identity on Myspace in order to cyberbully Megan who eventually committed suicide in October 2006.

The case caused shockwaves in America and Det Supt Lakeman said that the need to protect children in the virtual world' is one of the West Mercia Children Safeguarding Board's top priorities.

"Unfortunately the reality is that some people have an unhealthy interest in children and we need to protect children against this.

"The aim of West Mercia's internet safety fortnight is to help answer any questions people have about internet safety and to raise awareness about the steps we can all take to keep ourselves and our families safe online."

Well an hour our two goes by I get this harassment comments on it. Like go suck a penis and the person is a horrible speller. So I add this profile tracker from whovisted.com. Well I still have tracked him down. I will I have a tracker on his ip address. Any post made on I will be alerted.

Then I get some spam, I deleted the other stuff this stuff is harmless. Sense I am lazy I didn't track it or anything. I am just annoyed by these people don't they have better things to do. I hate when people do this crap. I actually watch a hour thing on on demand today. It all about teens being the first people to use the internet like it is now. This kid killed himself because of cyber bulling. It is called "Growing up Online" watch online here. It actually was really good.

I recommend it to every one. Especially to teens, it showed me some stuff to keep in check. Please parents don't go as crazy as this one mother. I do think of here having all there login info in a keeled envelope. Just for emergence, say if a kid goes missing. I would do it because I don't trust my mom, and the kid in the film probably can't ether.

I'm reading about the latest MySpace bullying victim to get national attention. Young Shameeka Mucklin gave her MySpace password out to friends, who then used it to put crude comments on her MySpace profile. This is really unfortunate for Shameeka, and one of the reasons that I always tell students I speak with to keep their passwords private and change them often.

Back in the days when AOL was the hot way to communicate online, a similar thing happened to me. I was in middle school and a boy I was friends with watched me type in my password, and he was able to figure out what it was from watching my fingers punch in the letters. He then went in and changed all my profile information to say really lewd things. I never knew how long it was up before I found it to delete and change all my password. While I was a kid with lots of confidence and many friends, his actions still made me feel violated. It's an evil spirited thing to do, and I remember as a preteen making the evaluation that this person wasn't really my friend, or he wouldn't have done this. I made the decision to hold him at arms length, and I did. While I survived this brief encounter during the primitive years of cyberbullying unscathed, I see how this same incident could be devastating to a preteen lacking confidence and desperately seeking validation from his/her peer group.

There's still work to be done to arm kids with the tools and confidence to prevent cyberbullying and act appropriately when it does happen.

In reading, I've also come across Disney's new internet safety class for parents. I haven't watched it all, but from the once over it looks like a strong compilation of information. This could be a great thing to watch for yourself and send on to other parent friends.

hen Tina Meier's 13-year-old daughter committed suicide after being bullied on the Internet, her grief was so encompassing she felt at times she couldn't breathe. She had trouble being around loved ones who reminded her of her child. Even today, recollections of those first holidays after Megan's death are foggy at best.

But in recent months, the Missouri woman has focused on ways to protect other children from bullying, even leaving her job as a real estate agent to dedicate herself to the Megan Meier Foundation.

It's the "rule" that if you don't respond to email within half an hour, you get targeted and picked on by co-workers...um...I mean, schoolmates. Sixth grade schoolmates to be more specific. Japanese parents are increasingly concerned about the amount of time youngsters spend on their highly sophisiticated mobile phones, especially given the long commute time to and from school. They're also worried about access to dangerous websites and exposure to cyber crime.

How to Build a Bully

The 30 Minute Rule is yet one more way to "build a bully". Given an opportunity to exert power over others, many will take it.

And the crazy thing is, this behavior isn't just limited to sixth graders in Japan! How many times has a co-worker complained or turned you in to the boss when you didn't respond to an email or voicemail within the time they deemed reasonable? Sound familiar?

Did it go something like this?

Sender: "Hey Bob, just checkin in on status of Project X. Wonderin how things are coming. Remember, we're on a tight deadline with this one."

Meanwhile, "Bob" just boarded a plane on his way back from Japan (who knew?). After 4 days of back to back meetings, he's exhausted. Presently somewhere over the Pacific Ocean, he's ready for some shut-eye. 

Sender (29 minutes later): "Hey Bob, it's me again. Just tried to get you on your cell and it went straight to voicemail. What gives, eh buddy? Getting kind of worried over here about Project X. Ya know, my bonus is riding on this one. Get back to me."

Back on the plane: "Bob" just settled in with a blanket, earbuds and 30 seconds later he's in la-la-land. 

(39 minutes later) Sender, wiping little beads of sweat off the keyboard: "Where the h_ll are you? I've been calling and emailing and no one knows how to get ahold of you. Just 'cause you're in Japan is no excuse. You better not be off partying somewhere. I'm only going to give this a few more minutes and then I'll be taking it upstairs."

"Bob" stretches his legs, adjusts the pillow and snores straight into the ear of the lady to his left.

See "Sender" throw "Bob" under the bus: "Hey boss, I've been trying all day to get ahold of Bob and just can't get through to him. I've tried his cell and his email and still nothin. I'm really concerned about the status of Project X and now with all this, well, I can't say I have confidence in old Bob like I used to. Whaddya say we hand this one over to Ralph. He's a little more reliable."

60 minutes later, the plane banks a sharp turn and "Bob's" head rolls forward, coming to rest on the back of the seat in front of him, his mouth wide open and dead to the world. The lady to the left watches a little bit of drool slowly escape from the side of his mouth and drip to the floor below.

Sender: "Hey Ralph, just checkin in on status of Project X. Wonderin how things are coming. Remember, we're on a tight deadline with this one."

Back on the plane: "Ladies and gentlemen, the captain is seeing some turbulence ahead. It's going to get bumpy folks, so please, fasten your seat belts." 

Groggy "Bob", with head still wedged against the seat ahead, opens his eyes. The first thing he spies is a big old wet spot staring back at him from between his feet on the floor below.

He wipes his mouth and wonders if anyone noticed.

Taught my class this morning - a whopping 5 attendees! I feel like it didn't go as well as I would have liked, but it seemed like they learned something, at least. At least I have an awesome powerpoint. :-P

Second class I attended was on cyber-bullying, taught by a police officer. This was an eye-opening and fantastic seminar that opened our eyes to 21st century bullying - cell phones, myspace, and all of that great stuff being used to harass and threaten students. I think the most important learning from this is just how prevalent it is - 53% of surveyed students admitted to being a cyber-bully at some point. That's about half of each of my classes, which is hard for me to believe. Hopefully I'll be more aware of the things that are going on in class - students texting in their pockets and that kind of stuff - so that I can begin to prevent this sort of activity.

Our session on "The Book Lives!" was about social book sites like Shelfari and Goodreads. Though I've gotten completely addicted to Shelfari before this, it was good for me because I learned a couple of really useful tricks - like how to record that I "loaned" a book out, or how to see who else is reading the same things I am.
