Despite all the hype, I’m not a huge fan of Ladyhawke’s supposed “summer hit

Despite all the hype, I'm not a huge fan of Ladyhawke's supposed "summer hit" 'Paris is Burning'. The melody sounds infuriatingly like Gary Numan's 'Cars', the song is very repetitive and her husky and strained vocals begin to grate after the first chorus.

Remixers to the rescue then! Like Sharks circling waiting for the kill, various remixers have flocked to this potential summer anthem, hoping to get a piece of the action. Amongst them are the ever reliable Cut Copy and the ever unpredictable Peaches.

Both remixes offer considerably different spins on the song and thankfully they're both, in the opinion of somthing who dislikes the original, far better than the original. Cut Copy turn it into an altogether more funky and danceable prospect, whereas Peaches goes, as you would expect, a bit more abrasive and nasty.

Also as a sort of a relevant aside. I couldn't help but post this gem on Ladyhawke's Myspace.

It took a while for the Midnight Juggernauts’ latest album Dystopia to really set in for me,

It took a while for the Midnight Juggernauts' latest album Dystopia to really set in for me, but parts of it have since grown on me and I just can't stop listening to tracks like "Into the Galaxy" and "End of An Era." The Midnight Juggernauts track that really hit me over the head was "Shadows", mostly because of the dance-heavy rhythm and those colorful psychedelic synths. Another thing I thoroughly enjoy about the track is that bass that just thumps incredibly hard, similar to that of someone who's been raging on X for hours on end . I imagine that when they play that song at concerts the crowd turns in to an absolute madhouse.

But while I'm quite fond of the majority of Dystopia, some of the more downtempo mellow tracks caught me off guard, one of those being the title track. Not to say that the song is a bore, but with this remix of "Dystopia", Cut Copy of course adds their ubiquitous club-ready new wave influences and transforms it in to something that's completely their own.

First off, I think Cut Copy's production skills are absolutely insane (as evidenced by their #1 spot on my Mid-Year Favorites of of 08 list) and they assist in making this track so much more exciting and catchy. Some may call them corny, but your girlfriend has a good reason for heading to the dance floor every time a Cut Copy song comes on. They make awesome music, that makes you want to dance and bask in the face of the normalcy of everyday life.

Now this blog Hipster Runoff jokingly theorizes that there is an upcoming Electro-War between Australia and France, because so much amazing electronic music comes out of each country, that they might eventually go to war over it. But when it comes down to it, Australian and French electronic music are two totally different sounds. They both have equally amazing talent; France with Daft Punk, Mr. Oizo and Justice; Australia with artists like The Avalanches, Midnight Juggernauts, and Cut Copy. If one thing is for sure though, it's that in the past year, Australia has been putting out some fucking amazing electronic music. Why not top it off with a new Avalanches album? Please?

(Leo Cackett)
How can you tell that the U.S.A. is really ready for change? The reemergence of disc

(Leo Cackett)

How can you tell that the U.S.A. is really ready for change? The reemergence of disco as a credible and, gasp, popular form of music stateside. Helping lead the dance revolution is the Melbourne, Australia-based group Cut Copy, whose latest record, "In Ghost Colours," has become a mainstay for music blogs, fashion shows and house parties everywhere. Mixing a range of disparate but spirited musical influences — the '80s house-hop pioneer Rob Base, Fleetwood Mac and classic garage punk, to name a few — Cut Copy's sound is a studied but effortless pastiche of dance music history. Here, the band's lead singer, Dan Whitford, discusses the perks of being a compulsive record collector, the band's collaboration with DFA's Tim Goldsworthy and his current music obsessions.

I hear that you were a D.J. before you started Cut Copy.

I started out just collecting records. After I finished high school, I had a radio show on public radio. From there, I started playing clubs as well. I’m just a music collector, not someone that went to clubs or discos or anything like that. I started discovering dance music just through collecting records.

This was all happening in Australia, where you grew up?

Well, I was in Melbourne. And I was doing my radio show, on just the student radio station there. That experience led me to actually starting to write music as well.

What kind of records did you collect?

I'd always been into more classic indie guitar stuff from the ’90s. From guitar music, I started getting into more, I suppose, proper dance music and even hip-hop. I would discover new kinds of music and then start to trace it back to the roots of that kind of music, stuff like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. Ever since then, I've always been fairly interested in tracing stuff back to where it came from, where certain sounds originated from.

Was it easy to find these older records in Australia?

Well, kind of. There’s an abundance of certain records in Australia; stuff like Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream and some of the prog stuff was actually not that hard to find, interestingly enough. Certain records that were more things along the lines of disco or funk and soul were harder to find just because there's not such a history of that music in Australia.

I would search pretty hard at record fairs and hope that someone had come in with their whole collection of kind of weird, obscure stuff that I could kind of troll through. Disco never really had a big following here, even when it was big in the rest of the world. Those types of records are probably a lot easier to find in the States or in Europe.

So how did this evolve into a band?

I come from what can be considered a creative background. I studied art and ended up going to art school to do graphic design. So I've sort of always been from a creative background. And I always just, I guess, been sort of reasonably competent. [Laughs]

More importantly, I’ve always been interested in trying things and seeing whether I could do things like create music or at least attempt things like that. If I am into something, I always try and do it myself. So it was a natural progression, I guess, from D.J.-ing. I bought a cable and a microphone and a sampler and just started kind of mucking around.

And just like that, you became a functioning band.

I don't know, we just became more real over time and eventually people believed we were actually a band even though we were just sort of mucking around. [Laughs]

That's important: if you trick people into thinking you are a band, you are one. [Laughs.] And how did Tim Goldsworthy, from DFA, get involved with the most recent record, "In Ghost Colours"?

Initially, we sort of had the idea that we'd work on the record ourselves. But our label pushed the idea of us working with a new producer; so we thought, Well, if we're going to work with a producer, then we'll sort of throw a few names in that we're interested in. Tim Goldsworthy was one of them. We thought about all of the records he had done over the years and his solo stuff more recently with his Loving Hand project. We thought his direction mirrored a little bit what we were sort of doing with the Cut Copy sound, sort of making it a bit more layered and textured and sort of a little bit trippy.

What's your kind of take on finding a niche over here in the States? Some of those music blogs seem to religiously follow you guys.

I've been pleasantly surprised. We toured a few years ago, and that was the first time I'd really seen all of America, or a lot more of the middle of America. I had seen New York and L.A., but it's not really so representative, I suppose. [Laughs]

Having the press on our side this time and having the kind of whole broad dance culture as well being a lot more developed over the past few years means that, you know, the response to our music is a lot more immediate. We've definitely benefited from the exposure that kind of thing's given us.

To be honest, we always thought that we'd sort of have a bit more potential for success in the U.K. and Europe. The States were a bit of a mystery to us. We didn't really know exactly what goes on in the States. [Laughs] When we first started, the U.S. was the kind of place where people made a kind of rock music, some R&B and hip-hop. But, with the kind of music we're making, we didn't think there would be a following for it. But I guess we were sort of wrong about that and we've been really, really surprised about how people have taken to it. Particularly for this record for some reason. I'm not sure I've got an explanation for it, but we're sort of enjoying the fact that it's happened.

All right, here’s my final question for you: What records have you been listening to recently that you can't stop playing?

Ah-hah. This question I always struggle with because I listen to so much different kinds of music. But I guess I've been listening to a whole bunch of disco stuff. I bought a few records from this old D.J. from the '70s and '80s and he just sold his collection. In terms of actual albums, I guess most recently I've been listening to the MGMT record a bit and the Yeasayer record as well. There's an Australian label called P.A.M; they do these amazing combinations of just the weirdest music you could possibly imagine, like disco and Italian film soundtracks to funk and hip-hop stuff. They are just the most crazy combinations of stuff, and I can’t stop listening to them.

In Ghost Colours has got to be one of the, if not the album of 2008. There's been a lot of good albums this year but this one might just take the crown when I retire in my Christmas Holidays to write up the end of year lists.

Anyway, it turns out the UK physical releases of this gem got a lovely bonus track - 'Cold Youth'. British, European and American artists tend to reserve these extra nuggests for Japan but I guess the Australians do things the other way around.

The song is surpisingly 'rocky'. Undoubtedly many of the album's highlights wear their New Wave and Dance Rock influences their sleeve, but none so blantantly as Cold Youth. The opening minute or so is nearly unrecognisable as a Cut Copy tune, until those recognisable synths and keys come in.

It's a worthy addition to the album nonetheless and perhaps points to a future Cut Copy with a more prominent rock sound.

Color me surprised when a new Verve song came on my ways to work! It's called "Love is Noise" off of their new album coming out in August. So, it should leak sometime soon, right? I'm terrible. Coupled with "Lights & Music" from Cut Copy, this makes for a very happy two song mix. And since I've had a big lack of dance tracks (they are coming, don't worry), throw that Lights & Music song kind of in there and ignore that I've already posted a remix of it.

The Verve - Love is Noise

This is a really, at the chance of sounding lame, groovy track. Really good for a summer mix, which speaking of, who can help me find my summer album for this year?? LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver covered that for me last year, but I still haven't found that one for me yet this year, damnit.

Islands - Creeper

Beach House has this really spacey sound to them...obviously at this point of the blog you've caught on that I let the music talk for itself more than I talk for the music, so just take my word for it and click below.

Now here is the real gem of this post. This guy has this unimaginable about of emotion that he conveys in his methodical singing. Bottle of whiskey + Bon Iver + Liam Finn + Sufjan Stevens would make for a great night.

My updating has been a little slow as of late up here, but its because I've recently been appointed the role of taking care of all of the live music acts on Thursdays at On The Rocks in Little Rock, so that has taken up a LOT of my free time as of late. There's still some bad ass bands we haven't signed down quite yet, but are in talks with, but I won't reveal the names yet, but anybody in Arkansas will be quite happy to hear some of those. Here are the shows we have down for sure right now after a little over a week's work:

So I rented King Kong, The Battle of Algiers, The Pianist and Metropolis from the library this past

So I rented King Kong, The Battle of Algiers, The Pianist and Metropolis from the library this past week, with the idea of watching them all this week. I watched none of them. I wasn't anticipating having this little free time this summer. I think it's time to proclaim the Summer 2008 IMDb Top 250 project a failure. A sad, sad day indeed. Although, honestly, tonight I could have watched King Kong, but instead chose to watch the first really fun-to-watch Mets game in a long while. So sue me.

Anyway, In Ghost Colours by Australian electropop outfit Cut Copy is a solid album that failed to wow me. It was a Pitchfork darling a while back - Pitchfork seems to have a soft spot for synth-heavy sweety-pie pop music á la Junior Boys. But where Junior Boys (just two Canadian dudes) and Cut Copy (Three, count 'em, 3 Australian dudes) differ apart from their number is that Cut Copy seems way more focused on the dance floor than Junior Boys, more kinetic than subtle and contemplative, and as a result lots of the tenuous quality of Junior Boys doesn't come to Cut Copy as easily.

Let me explain. Junior Boys seems a lot more fragile and intimate in their music, and that has a lot of appeal for close listeners, especially when the album that is all about fragility is a breakup album like the great So This is Goodbye. Cut Copy really just powers along and seems almost too efficient for its own good. Add to the mix that the albums is very continuous and mixed very well, and it just seems like one dance-pop track, which is not a bad thing by any means. It just doesn't feel like a fully-realized album. As a result, I can't really pick highlights and lowlights, though "Out There On The Ice" jumped out at me a little more than the others.

As far as the music itself, Cut Copy uses lots of synths and a surprising amount of guitars that are mixed to sound like synths. The result makes the music seem very dense and layered, which is really cool, and I feel like it's the only thing that it really holds over Junior Boys (who you can tell I feel is their closest comparison), which often just have one or two synth tracks with the vocal track. Also, interestingly enough, I could have sworn that they sounded Swedish. Their accents, probably combined with the kind of music they make (seems sort of crystalline to me, which could be compared with icy, I guess) give the distinct Swedish imprint. I mean, just compare the singer to Jens Lekman. Seriously.

And as far as sheer danceability, I imagine with some more bass, this album wouldn't be all that beatable. It's an almost continuously flowing work, as I mentioned before, and I'm sure it translates to great live shows. In a way, it kind of reminds me of minimalist techno guy The Field with its unhurried but constant motion.

Okay, I'm cutting this review off here because I realized that probably no one who reads this blog will have heard of any of the people I just talked about. Better review tomorrow, hopefully of a movie this time.

EDIT: I now realize that the title of this post should have been "Libraries, like morals, are for squares." Oh well.

Not only do these guys make good music, but they have good art direction. Winnar!

The Horse, The Rat, and The Swan is probably my local album of the year. Big call, I know, but seriously, this thing is epic. Spooky as hell in parts, the album brings in some awesome sounds to the mix. First track Our Mother (She Remembers) has some awesome distorted string action harking back to Touched off Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, and anyone who reads this knows I hold a great big euphimistic candle for those guys, so Snowman, you get points for that.

First single (and second track, just to be all chronological and shit), We Are The Plague, begins with a banging rhythm, then some soft 'coos' come in, some unintelligible lyrics join that, more coos, reverb-ed out guitars, more lyrics (only a bit more recognisable as English), and still the same beat, just in case you hadn't figured out that this song is trying to repeatedly bash your head in to steal your mind and eventually your soul. So I guess, don't mess with this song, because it's the supernatural Patrick Bateman of songs. God that book was graphic. Rats anyone? Segue! Alright!

Other tracks worth losing your shit over are Daniel Was A Timebomb, The Horse [Parts 1 and 2] (which is THE most epic of epic songs on this album in my opinion), The Gods of the Upperhouse... actually, if I keep doing this, I'll name every song on the album, so just get the album. Downloading is for 15yr olds anyway.

91/100 Belinda Neal coverups.

In other news, Cut Copy (via Modular's weekly newsletter) has gone and got Hearts on Fire remixed by Midnight Juggernauts and you (yes, you!) can download 'this' 80's synth and samples explosion for FREE!! Click me! Is 'this' the Juggies remix though? In my iTunes it's says the Joakim remix. Am I stupid and missing a psuedonym? Possibly. Anyways, I'm not the biggest fan of the remix, but then again, I didn't like Hearts on Fire to begin with. Nathan will hate me for saying that.

Also on the Modular newsletter was this picture:

If that doesn't scream "Awesome facial hair!", not much does. Unless we're talking these guys. If only I could grow a healthy rug as opposed to the 1970's council housing carpet I have on my face. Rancid.

AC/DC are also releasing some DVD's of their old school concerts soon. I'm talking Madison Square Garden and the like. I'd link you, but I heard this from that 'real world' place you've heard about. Anyway, I only tell you this because when they are released, you might want to steer clear of K Mart and Aldi as all the bogans buy up the cheap DVD players. On the plus side, there will be a whole stack of perfectly usable VHS players in your local tip soon for those of us who still have those old tapes of Rage sitting in their house. Add this to their new album, and you get a whole lot of apathy from me. Not enough to NOT write about it though.

Coincidentally, Snowman's We Are The Plague is indie clip of the week on Rage, so hit it up.

This guy takes amazing photos. He's also moving to Australia soon, so expect some localised content, and someone should hook him up with all the photo passes he needs, because seriously, look at those photos! Wowie!

I know I ask for a lot (turntables, respect, my dignity back, and all those are still needed too) but does anyone have a delay pedal they want to sell? The crappier the better. Hit me up.

Um, what else... Check out our pages on the side ------> which tell you all sorts of awesome info about us (not really) and which sites we think are the shizniggity (yes really).

For this post, I got in touch with a few of my friends and fellow KY bloggers to see what some of their favorite albums of the year are so far. I think it's good to add a little contrast to my list, which will probably be pretty predictable if you've been reading CA for a while. I know this whole thing is a little bit late, but hopefully this will help people make a more informed decision on the music they're purchasing when they head out to the record store or get on iTunes. With this leak heavy climate we live in today, there are plenty of late summer and fall releases already floating around, but we decided to keep this one to albums that have already been released. As usual, criticism is welcome and feel free to drop your own lists in the comments if you want. Enjoy.

I don't know if any of you made it out to the Floss/ Zebo/ Kid Color show this week, but I heard it was "eh". I didn't make it out because, well, I just didn't feel like it, but I heard from a bunch of people that Kid Color destroyed it. As you know, Floss is usually really good, maybe it was just an off night, maybe it was an off set, who knows.

What I do know is that regardless of how "bad" their performance may have been this past week, their slightly aged Bang Gang DJ's Podcast guest mix was insane. Let that track-list sink in... Then proceed to download.

Tracklist:
DJ Khaled - Introduction
DJ DLG - Paramount (Rogerseventytwo Remix)
Count and Sinden feat. Kid Sister - Beeper (A-Trak Remix)

Segue a entrevista reproduzida:

Misturinha 211 Dj Bezzi

Achei ultrafoda e o desafiei a fazer posters.

Jenner: Que tal 2 listas?

Adoro fazer listas.

Dez coisas gringas bacanas de 2008 pra mim foram:The Teenagers, Koko Von Napoo, Cut Copy, Zombie Disco Squad, Gentle Touch, Crystal Castles, Girl Talk, Dj Treasure Fingers, Ladyhawke e o selo Italians Do It Better.

It's been a few weeks, so sorry for the delay, but it's...well...tough shit, and quite frankly I got a whole load of sweet and magical posts to swing by your ears so you are soon going to luuurve me for forever, so sit back, read away and click, upload and prepare to watch me fly...

With this Gig List I'm gonna focus solely on the upcoming LOOP FESTIVAL based in Brighton's busy centre on 16th August. What a totally super-sweet line up it's forged for this year. After last years success this is now an annual event and the set up is going from strength to strength. In a city known for its new music scenester festivals and particularly for breaking acts, Loop stands tall.

Amongst others, this year holds up; New Young Pony Club, The Bays, Caged Baby, , Primary One, Transformers and the fantastically named Holy Fuck. Nice!

However, I'm blowing my top over the following two awesome bands...CUT COPY and THE SHOES. Both are right up there with the best in both cracking tunes and blinding live sets. Brightons going to swing until it goes boom!

CUT COPY - As tasty as Indie-Dance gets quite frankly. If you wanna know more then I've already posted about them below in The Recommender Number 3, so go have a look-see. Inspiring acts such as The Presets and Midnight Juggernauts they can do no wrong in my books - woo, and indeed, hoo!!

ACT: CUT COPY
VENUE: LOOP FESTIVAL, HUB STAGE, VICTORIA GARDENS
COST: £25 (£32 for after-party club access)
DATE: 16th August 2008
WEBSITE: http://loopbrighton.com/

THE SHOES - Woah Nelly!!!! These guys are freeeeekin awesomeness personified. Totally on the button if you ask me. Another French Duo punching you with rocked-out electro beats, but before you go ranting about Justice and Daft Punk, you really need to consider this crew. I've been so impressed by them I simply cannot resist giving them a slot on The Recommender Number 5 (Due up real soon...), so learn more about them then.

OK I got soooo much to post I'm bursting at the seam so I'm going to leave it there, except to say that The Presets were amazing at Digital the other day, so I hope you were there to enjoy it too. If not, then what ya doing!!!? Shoulda listened to your old faithful 'Gig List' eh!!!?

I sincerely hope you do this time as LOOP FESTIVAL is going to be totally buzzing.

OK I know this next post is meant to be about Story but I just felt the need to focus on the catalysts, the vibes the little and big things that make our imaginations wake up from their pod life induced slumbers and recoil into action. Well for me I think beyond film, books and comics it has to be art work and music perhaps sprinkled with a little loosen-er (AKA a cheeky cab sav or for all you Spanish speaking compardres vino tinto).

Yeah for me when I'm sitting in my pod life train rattling home nothing helps to lift the grey worker ant mists more than a top tune on ipod; if I have a good book in my hands then even better and on occasion I grab for my notebook and pen and scribble down something inspired, unforced that will hopefully become part of something bigger perhaps a story at a later date... who knows?

I guess music like books and films carries a story, the code if you will that gets the neuro transmitters in our grey matter firing. My current favourite flavours of inspiration would have to be Angels and Airways and Cut Copy. So to that end get your pens poised and listen to the CC clip below. Enjoy; right I'd better get back to that post on Story I've been promising now... oops. Dave.

The things that make me tick this week:

1. Music videos from Islandrecords artists Sam Sparro and Cut Copy. I've been in desperate need of some music to dance to and since my finger and toe tapping Girl Talk days are in need of a break, I feel that I've found a decent replacement.

2. The Wire. This show is badass. McNulty is perhaps one of the best alcoholic, hard headed, cops television has seen in a long while. Everything you hear about this show is true, it is addictive and awesome.

3. Missed connections. Craigslist has been a source of sheer amusement for me as of late with the multitude of "missed connections" posted daily. There's a guy crushing on a girl in the red tube top driving a Mazda down I-20, a teen that frequently shops at Best Buy because of the cashier that rang him up on check-stand 3 and then, of course, the Marta train encounters. Endless entertainment.

4. Trivia Night Okay, so I can't really count this since I only went once, but I'm all about winning free food and drinks for my varied pop-culture and worldly knowledge.

5. Frederico Erra's photostream on Flickr, particularly "violet place".

6. GOOD Magazine. It's tag line "GOOD is for people who give a damn. It's an entertaining magazine about things that matter." With it's stimulating commentary on important environmental, economic, and cultural issues as well as it's unique coverage on unknown objects and quirky travel spots, this magazine is what it says.

7. The Black Keys and Sea Wolf. I already went through a Black Keys stage where they were all that was buzzing on my iPod for weeks, but now I've revisited Magic Potion and I can't get enough of it. Leaves in the River is also some really swell stuff.

I'm in the process of writing another short story as well as expanding and editing a story I wrote for my short stories course. Expect something of the child's tale type genre involving oranges someday soon. Farethewell.

Holy guacamole, it's been a long time since I've done this. And the longer I delay, the worse it becomes. My music consumption has not dissipated one bit. I've accumulated at least 50 albums since the last entry. But I refuse to give up. If I finish this list, I'll be halfway through the freaking year. Here goes, nose a la grindstone.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Lay Down in the Light Someone's been on a roll lately. It's a shambling and shimmering sound. Perfect summer album for this guy. Beardy continues the very nice formula of dueting with a quirky indie female vocalist (Faun Fables lady on "Let Me Go" and Meg Baird on "Ask Forgiveness"). But this time it's my personal fav Amber Webber (of Black Mountain and the canonical Lightening Dust) with a set of pleasant--even cheerful--songs. And did I hear a jazzy clarinet? The public fellatio tune aside, of course.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Ask Forgiveness I'm a sucker for cover albums, and still for Will Oldham albums, so this one had me on the Tuesday it came out. Meg Baird of the great freaky-deaky Espers and her own efforts (who I think I would really like) joins Beardy this time. So this should be much more awesome than it is. I don't think Bill is good at covers. That Tortoise cover album was terrible. This one's not as bad, but you can hear it's lost potential more clearly. It seems like Meg's parts were kind of tacked on. She doesn't even get to do the duet on the lamey version of the best Bjork song ever. Instead, Bill sings both the Bjork and Thom York parts on "I've Seen It All". What does that make the song about? And btw, that song title is an appropriate response to the R. Kelly cover. Did you know he played a cop in one of those gross "In the Closet" episodes?

Cloud Cult - Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes) Another ecstatic ensemble celebrating life as it is, I think. Still, it's pretty great. They live in a commune.

Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles "Crimewave" to me represents the best of electronica or whatever this genre is. Repetitive, incomprehensible, and vaguely robo-erotic. I'm down, but this makes feel old.

Crystal Stilts - Crystal Stilts This one hits me just right. Nothing groundbreaking. Sounds like I should have been listening to this with my The Clean album.

Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours I don't think I would have got this if they weren't going to be at the Pitchfork Festival. It's kind of cheesy. But it's playing on that newly discovered love of 80s synth pop exploited better by Glass Candy in March. I never liked New Order or any of that in their heyday, but now I'm digging the imitators. Maybe they're better dressed.

Darondo - Let My People Go I think Darondo is/was actually a pimp, I'm told. So was Al Green, of which he sounds like a cracked-out version. And I'm no hebrew scholar or nothing, but Moses kind of seemed like a pimp. So it makes sense.

Extra Golden - Hera Ma Nona I swear to you on my life that I only long for Extra Golden to punk the hell out of Vampire Weekend at this year's Pitchfork Festival. I don't care how they do it. Maybe by washing the Vampire cardigans in hot water. Or midway through Weekend's set of the most offensive appropriation of a heritage (they're the hipster Jar Jar Binks), they could like throw blood on their loafers. Or they could just completely blow them out of the water with their sound so superior to the VDub's Gap Ad-version. And they do the "Obama" song.

No Age - Nouns Somewhere along the way, I got it in my head that these guys were a garage band. Maybe it was the picture of garage (or is it a storefront?) on their album cover. Whatever. My expectations were defied and I refused to listen further. But they kept creeping back in my zune shuffle (oh wise Shuffle) and forced a reconsideration. This one is better from the pretty good "Weirdo Rippers." And their's something to be said about the packaging (I actually bought the CD old school), which is pretty worthwhile. "Teen Creeps" is my summer anthem.

Jay Reatard - Blood Visions I love it. 2 years old, but still kicks ass. Like my son*. Appropriately on the same label as the morekickassing Reigning Sound. That should be enough. Cover's a little gross, though.

To be continued...

*Artistic license...I really want to use this simile, but I don't have any children, nor do I know any two-year-olds that can kick ass with any particular skill. I assume mine would, though.

Summer is officially here! And what better a way to ring in summer than with my first ever monthly mixtape! This mixtape is composed of the songs that I have been listening to most over the past month. As you can see, my musical choices are very seasonal. Pretty much all of the songs on my mix are happy summer jams. But don't worry, it wont always be this cheery (just wait until fall). So enjoy these tunes, some old, some new, all very appropriate for partying the night away (or slip n' slide).

[mixwit_mixtape wid="988330fb21d5bfdb4066b72642468638" pid="cdb158e7f28093d71880a4d55b1da46b" un="g_vibes27" width="426" height="327" center="true"]

1. Fleet Foxes – She Got Dressed
This remains one of my favourite Fleet Foxes songs, even though the full length is brilliant. It is the first song off of their self titled EP that was released in 2006. I actually prefer this EP to the critically revered Sun Giant EP. Anyways, this is an awesome song. At least i think so.

2. Coldplay – Viva La Vida
So far this is the track that I really like on the new Coldplay album. It may have something to do with this amazing Apple Ad. Nevertheless, great song. Now the question remains...is this for real?

3. CSS – Rat is Dead (Rage)
This is the first taste of the new CSS album. I like this song a lot. Hopefully the rest of the album will be as good. I had a dream last night that Lovefoxxx quit the band and that she wasn't on the new album at all. Weird.

4. The Ting Tings – Fruit Machine
Catchy little summer jam. I don't care what Pitchfork says, these guys are awesome.

5. M.I.A. – Paper Planes
I'm kind of obsessed with this song. This and "Jimmy" are pretty much the only songs I like on M.I.A.'s new album, but this is song is just gangsta!

6. Hot Chip – Ready For the Floor
This song just kicks ass. As does Hot Chip's (not so) new album.

7. Cut Copy – Feel The Love
I fell in love with this song a few months ago and then I totally forgot about it. Until I was out shopping in NYC and i heard it in the store Forever 21 (I was waiting while my girlfriend was trying on clothes), and I couldn't remember how I knew it or who it was by. So after much thought I finally remembered that is was Cut Copy. There's nothing I hate more than hearing a song, being able to sing along, and having no clue what it is.

8. MGMT – The Youth
I have finally succumbed to MGMT. Ever since I saw them open for Of Montreal 3 years ago, I have been seeing their name pop up here and there but I never really took notice, because of that performance that I didn't really care for. It turns out they actually make some pretty nice music, as I have recently discovered. This is song is pure greatness.

9. Rose Melberg – Each New Day
This is just a completely beautiful song, by one half of the Softies. I honestly can never get enough of the Softies.

So there you have it. I hope you like my first ever monthly mixtape. If you would like me to send you a copy of this mix just give me your email and it's yours.
