Bhí trí phobal ar an láthair - ceann le h-aghaidh taispeantas na saothar ealaíne is cocaireachta agus ceann eile ina raibh seó na madraí ar bun ann.

Cé ná raibh sé ag doirteadh anuas ina bhuicéid, bhí sé fliuch go leor.  B'é seo an chéad uair don seó ar ais i bPairc an Choláiste ar feadh roinnt blian agus is láthair an chaothúil é.   Dá mbeadh an aimsir níos fearr, is cinnte go mbeadh lá thar na beartaibh ag gach éinne.

Gott-sei-lob-und-dank! Es gibt noch Dinge, die mich zum Staunen bringen können! Und gleichzeitig die Augen zum Strahlen!
Als ich gestern ziemlich "schlaff" und von der Hitze k.o. mich vor dem Bildschirm niederließ, durchquerten seltsam anmutende Kreaturen die Mattscheibe und nahmen mich sofort "gefangen": es waren die faszinierenden kinetischen Skulpturen des holländischen Künstlers Theo Jansen. Optisch scheinbar ungelenk, aber mit einer anmutig empfundenen Bewegung liefen (oder gingen? ...) sie über den Strand, ausschließlich von der Kraft des Windes angetrieben - bzw., wie später der Künstler erklärte, "... ihre Nahrung ist der Wind". Theo Jansen's "Rhinozerus", 3,5 Tonnen schwer

"Sie können sich selbständig bewegen und sie haben eine Art von Gehirn und ein Gefühl für Wasser, und sie haben Sinne. Das ist nicht einfach nur Luft, wovon ich rede."

Seit 1990 entwickelt der Künstler seine "Strandbeests", für welche er 2005 auch den "Prix Ars Electronica" bekam. Die skelettartigen Gebilde, nun schon in der 7. Generation einer Evolution in Richtung eigenständig lebender Wesen, bestehen aus simpelsten Materialien: Plastikrohre, Kabelbinder, Nylonfäden, Klebebänder. Und einem selbst entwickelten Verfahren zur Speicherung der Windenergie. So sind die Strandbiester auch bei Flaute beweglich. Bei ankommendem Sturm verankern sie sich selbstständig im Sand und ändern die Laufrichtung, wenn sie ins Wasser kommen.

"Ich habe das Gefühl, eine Aufgabe zu haben: Menschen glücklicher zu machen. Ich glaube, das ist ein guter Grund, um so etwas zu tun, oder nicht?"

O ja! Wie recht du hast! Dies scheint in diesen Zeiten notwendiger denn je: man schüttet uns zu mit überschäumendem negativem menschlichen "Irr"-Sinn und dessen Auswüchsen. Und dann kommst du, Theo Jansen, und gibst uns mit deinen wunderschönen Skulpturen Freude , Energie und Motivation zurück!

Orlando Ribeiro foi o grande renovador da geografia em Portugal no Séc. XX. Grande parte da sua obra, extremamente vasta e conhecida, está intimamente ligada às viagens que fez, quer em Portugal e Espanha, quer a outras regiões do mundo. No site que lhe é dedicado, encontram-se disponíveis inúmeras fotografias do geógrafo, tiradas em Portugal e nas ex-colónias, sobretudo nas décadas de 50 e 60.

Karl Prantl's "Stein zur Meditation", im Bild oben noch in seinem Skulpturenfeld in Pöttsching, heute im Landesmuseum Mainz

Heute findet im Landesmuseum Mainz eine Festveranstaltung für den österreichischen Bildhauer und Gründer der Bildhauersymposien Karl Prantl (84) statt: anlässlich der Ausstellungseröffnung "Karl Prantl. Stein und Leben" wird im Rahmen eines Museumsfestes im Beisein des Künstlers die Skulptur "Stein zur Meditation" an das Landesmuseum Mainz übergeben.

Wenn schon nicht im eigenen Land, dachte ich ... - und: wie war das mit dem Propheten im eigenen Land? - einerseits freue ich mich, dass dem verdienten Künstler im Ausland höchste Ehrungen zuteil werden - andererseits bin ich traurig, dass man ihn im eigenen Land dermaßen ignorant behandelt!
Wie aussagekräftig ist der Umgang mit der zeitgenössischen Kunst für die Gesellschaft (oder auch nur die Kulturpolitik?) eines Landes?

Triúr a bhí ag fáil an bonn óir i mbliana - is iad sin Eibhlís Maidhcí Uí Shuilleabháin ó Dhámh Amhránaíocht Dhúchasach na nGael, Dónal O Liatháin ó Dhámh Stair Dhúchasach na nGael agus Caoimhín O Buachalla, an Dámh Talamhaíocht Dhúchasach na nGael. 

Nuair a bhí an slua báilithe, tháinig baill an Acadaimh isteach sa halla i mórshiúl agus beirt cheoltóir, Kevin Glacken agus Eamon McGiveney ar cheann an pharáid.   

Dónal O hÉalaithe a bhí ina fhear a'tí agus mhínigh seisean aidhmeanna an Acadaimh agus thug léargas duinn ar an obair a bhí ar bun sna Dáimheanna éagsúla. 

Bronnadh na boinn ór ansan ar na saoithe.  B'é Peadar O Riada a chur Eibhlís Maidhcí Uí Shuilleabháin i láthair.  Nuair a ghlac sise leis an bonn, ghabh sí buiochas leis an slua agus lucht an Acadaimh a roghnaigh í don onóir seo. 

Ní raibh Dónal O Liatháin i láthair don bronnadh de bharr é bheith ag teacht chuige féin in Oisbidéal Bheanntraí tar éis stróc é a bhuaileadh dhá mhí ó shin.  Chuir Daithí Mac Suibhne, an t-é a bhronn an bhonn, beannachtaí na Dáímhe agus an Acadaimh chuige agus bronnadh an bonn ar mhac Dhónail, Concubhar, le tabhairt dá athair ar ball. 

Iar phríomh oide ar Choláiste Mhuire i mBéal Atha'n Ghaorthaidh é Caoimhín O Buachalla, an saoi nua ag an nDáimh Talamhaíochta.  Tá an Dáimh seo ag tabhairt faoi obair thabhachtach cosúil le h-oideas 'mead' a aimsiú agus tabhairt faoin deoch ársa seo a thairgeadh.  Ina aitheasc mhol sé don Dáimh is nua san Acadamh, an Dámh Fuinnimh, staidéar a dhéanamh ar bhunaitheoir an Acadaimh, Peadar O Riada, le h-aimsiú cad as a tháinig a chuid fuinnimh ar fad!

I ndiaidh na searmanas ar fad, bhi soláistí alainne bídh agus cúpla gloine fíona ar fáil.  Bhí tae ann freisin do thiománaithe agus do Cheannródaithe.  Ina dhiaidh sin leanadh leis an cheol is leis an cheiliúradh ag Barr a'Chuma.

Vernissage im Nodbach-Ateliergarten

Zahlreiche Besucher konnte das Nodbach-Team und der Künstler Fritz Bergler bei der Eröffnung begrüßen, die in einer sehr entspannten Atmosphäre stattfand, wie NR Bgm. Gerhard Steier in seiner Eröffnungsrede mit Freude anmerkte.

Bgm. Gerhard Steier stellte auch erfreut fest, dass der vom Nodbach-Team organisierte, jährlich stattfindende "Kunstmonat" zu einer erfreulichen und spannenden Kulturveranstaltung in Siegendorf geworden ist, die von der Gemeinde Siegendorf gerne unterstützt wird. Die Werke von Fritz Bergler hätten ihn schon beim erstmaligen Durchblättern von Bergler's neuem Katalog überzeugt und beeindruckt. Das Lob, das er dem Ideenreichtum und dem Arbeitseifer des Nodbach-Teams aussprach, hat uns nicht nur sehr gefreut sondern auch entsprechend für die Zukunft motiviert!

Der Künstler im Freundeskreis: Fritz Bergler, Mitte

Fritz Bergler ist ein Künstler von internationalem Format, seine Arbeiten zeigen die Intelligenz eines Philosophen und Wissenschaftlers, seine Techniken sind weit entfernt von jeglicher Zufälligkeit oder Beliebigkeit. Hausherr Rudi Pinter betonte bei der Eröffnung, welche Freude und Ehre es für ihn sei, dass "...ein Künstler seines Kalibers..." im Nodbach-Atelier seine Werke ausstellt.

Die Eröffnung wurde zum Fest und viele Gäste blieben bis in die späten Abendstunden, wo man bei Kerzen und Fackelschein noch den schönen Sommerabend und die Kunst von Fritz Bergler genoss.

An Irishman's Diary

IT HAS taken a while: almost 37 years in fact. But on the weekend after next, the village of Cúil Aodha in West Cork will finally get around to unveiling a statue in honour of Seán Ó Riada, its most famous resident, who spent his later years there before dying in 1971, aged only 40, writes Frank McNally

An initiative of friends and relatives, the statue (by Kerry sculptor Mike Kenny) portrays Ó Riada playing the organ and will be located in the grounds of the local church, where one of his most enduring compositions - the Ó Riada Mass - is still sung every Sunday by a choir led by his son Peadar.

Statues are not everything, of course. The emphasis of previous commemorations, as in Ó Riada's life, was on music. And it will be back there after the ceremonies on August 3rd, with an open-air céilí featuring the Allow (pronounced as in "Mallow") Céilí Band: the reigning All-Ireland champions, from North Cork.

Cúil Aodha is an unusual place, and not just because it is the centre of the West Cork Gaeltacht, with its 1,000 or so Irish speakers. The same weekend, on August 1st, the village also hosts a sort-of conferring ceremony, courtesy of Acadamh Fódla: an informal academy founded by Peadar Ó Riada in the style of Newman's "Ideal University".

The academy boasts up to 100 members in several faculties, including music, history, agriculture, and - a recent addition - energy. These meet weekly to assess research projects ranging from the mapping of local fields (most of which, as elsewhere in Ireland, have individual names) to investigations of events from the Land War and War of Independence.

One of the more intriguing projects, currently being pursued by the agriculture faculty, aims to re-create the formula for that ancient alcoholic drink: mead. In fact, researchers - who stress that their interest is purely academic - believe they may have found it already. On a contrastingly sober note, the energy faculty is now calculating the area's carbon footprint.

At any rate, like Aosdána, the Acadamh honours certain members with the title of "Saoi" ("wise man" or "master"). And the latest on whom that title will be conferred is be local historian Dónal Ó Liatháin - who, incidentally, has also contributed the inscription for Ó Riada's statue: "Srutháín gléineach thar clocháin/Cáisí ceoil do chuimhneachán". (Rough translation: "Streams sparkle over stones/Torrents of music your memorial.") Although he would hardly object to having one play at his commemoration - especially an award-winning one like the Allow - Seán Ó Riada had a tense relationship with the céilí bands of his time, whose crimes against music were partly to blame for the disrepute into which the traditional form had fallen by the 1950s, and from which he was to help rescue it.

The revival began with Ceoltóirí Chualann, his traditional orchestra, which attempted to explore the music rather than batter the life out of it, as many céilí bands did then. Indeed, much of the subsequent development of Irish music can probably be traced from that group's early rehearsals at Ó Riada's Dublin home in Galloping Green.

A few years later, the Irish Times music critic tried to explain what the experiment involved: "In theory it was to have a wide variety of unison timbres with jazz-type opportunities for stretches of virtuoso solo variation and with creative arrangements of traditional music and perhaps actual composition, using in the new-old form ancient techniques such as canon, canon with augmentation and other contrapuntal means, leading to a new synthesis of age-old Irish traditional and European means." Phew. As the critic added: "These hopes were never fully realised." And no wonder.

But in the process of trying, Ceoltóirí Chualann spawned the Chieftains, most of whose members had played in it. Moreover, it would be a major influence on all the great traditional groups that followed, from Planxty to the Bothy Band to Moving Hearts and beyond.

Ó Riada is still probably best known for his soundtrack to George Morrison's 1960 film, Mise Éire , although in more recent times he also has the unusual distinction of having had one his songs covered by Kate Bush: the haunting Mná na hÉireann .

By the end of the 1960s, he had seen Irish music become fashionable again, partly thanks to the US folk revival. Ceoltóirí Chualann's experiment was nearly at an end, however. To the other members' surprise, Ó Riada disbanded the group in 1970, around the same time as the Beatles. And not much later, sadly, he was gone himself.

Oiche mór i gcónaí an oíche go mbionn buaiteoirí na mbonn is na nduaiseanna ag Oireachtas na Samhna ar an ardán mar cheann d'imeachtaí Aisling Gheal, an scéim atá ag déanamh sar oibre maidir le cur chun cinn an tsean nóis dúchasach sa cheantar. Beidh sin ar siúl ar 7 Samhain. 

Maidir le dramaí, tá dhá dhráma ar an ardán an Fhomhair seo - is iad sin Madcap, dráma ag meascadh an sean saol agus an saol comhaimseartha le scéalta grá, scéalta grinn, piseoga agus scéalta fíór.  Beidh sin á léiriú ar 26 Meán Fómhair. 

Ach, ansin, ar 11 Deireadh Fómhair, léireofar ceann de na dramaí is fearr a chonac an scriobhnóir seo le fada an lá.  Leagan Ghaeilge de shaothar Marie Jones, Stones in His Pockets, dráma ar fuair ainmniúchán le h-aghaidh gradam Tony i Nua-Eabhrac agus atá á léiriú anseo ag an t-aon compántas amharclainne Ghaeilge lán ghairmiúil sa tír, Aisling Ghéar.  Le déanaí tá Gabriel Byrne fógartha mar phatrún ar an gcompántas seo a bhunaigh Gearóid  O Cairealláin, ceannródaí i measc ceannrodaithe, i 1996 agus atá anois faoina stiúr agus faoi stiúr a bhean, Bríd O Gallchóir, aisteoir agus stiurthóír aitheanta.

In Anbetracht der - leicht zu missdeutenden - Begriffserklärung von "Symposion" sei hier gesagt, dass ich nicht der Meinung bin, jeder Barbesuch bzw. jedes gemeinsame Besäufnis wäre hier in diesem Beitrag als Symposion gedacht! Obwohl ...? Na ja, es könnte passieren, dass man bei der "ungenierten" Verwendung des Begriffs Symposion eine Tages sich zum Friday-Night-Symposion trifft ....? (Im Winter finden meist die wissenschaftlichen bzw. educational symposia statt ... !)
Hier ist auf jeden Fall ein Symposion gemeint, das Künstler für einen bestimmten Zeitraum zusammenbringt, um gemeinsam zu arbeiten, zu wohnen und sich auszutauschen - heute auch gerne als "vernetzen" bezeichnet!

Zu den eingefleischtesten "Symposianern" gehören die Bildhauer, für die das temporäre gemeinsame Arbeiten und Wohnen mit internationalen Kollegen inzwischen fast zum "Beruf" gehört. Als 1959 Karl Prantl damit begann, die Welt mit dem Bildhauer-Symposionsgedanken vertraut zu machen (siehe) , begann der Siegeszug des Bildhauersymposions: die Bildhauer trafen sich dort, wo der Stein wächst - in der unmittelbaren Nähe von Steinbrüchen, später auch im freien Feld - und auf dem ganzen Globus. Frei von Atelierzwängen, frei von allen Meisterschul-Zwängen - mitten in der Natur. Zeitlich immer dann, wenn das Klima für die Arbeit im Freien optimal war, daher - bei uns - meist im Sommer.
Der Besuch bei den Symposien - und zwar nicht nur bei der Vernisssage! - ist nicht nur für Kunst-Liebhaber ein Vergnügen! Ansonst eher Uninteressierte haben als Zuschauer eine leichte Möglichkeit, mit Künstlern zu kommunizieren - und genießen das in diesem offenen Raum!
Natürlich ist überall auf der Welt grad Sommer, daher finden die Symposien international über das ganze Jahr verteilt statt. Eingefleischte Symposianer könnten also das ganze Jahr als Teilnehmer auf Symposien irgendwo auf dem Globus verbringen, wenn .... ja, wenn da nicht als grundlegende Bedingung zur künstlerischen Arbeit auch die Kontemplation und eigene Reflexion nötig wären! Was man mit Künstlerkollegen am Symposion ausführlich diskutiert, mit Besuchern dort kommuniziert und selbst an Eindrücken mitnimmt - das muss erst individuell "verarbeitet" werden.
Und so zieht sich mancher Künstler nach der Teilnahme wieder zurück aus dem kommunikativen Umfeld eines Symposions in die kontemplative Welt des Ateliers, wo die Sicht auf die Welt sich in neuen Werken niederschlägt.

    Seán Ó Riada, 1931-1971 

Le blianta fada tá ainm Sheáin Uí Riada á lua le Cúil Aodha, an sraidbhaile Gaeltachta i Múscraí inar chaith sé na blianta deiridh dá shaol.  

Tháinig an Riadach agus a chlann go Cúil Aodha sna 60aí agus chuir siad futha ag An Draigheann, an teach ina mbiodh Timire Chonradh na Gaeilge, Dónal  O Ceocháin, ag cónaí ann.   Sara bhfad bhí Cór bunaithe agus Aifreann cumtha, aifreann atá anois á cheiliúradh ar fuaid na tíre. 

Cailleadh Seán  O Riada i 1971 gan ach dhá scór bliain slánaithe aige.  Taca an ama ar rugadh é, ag tús mhí Lúnasa, beidh dealbh cuimhneacháin á nochtadh i gCúil Aodha.   Ar 3 Lúnasa i gclós an tséipéil i gCúil Aodha, tar éis Aifrinn speisialta ag 2in, nochtfar an dealbh.  Ina dhiaidh sin beidh ceiliúradh le ceilí faoin aer, ag brath ar an aimsir, ag Aras Éamoinn Mhic Suibhne i gCúil Aodha.

The book has everything. It is funny, exciting, sad, moving, and there is fighting, loving and friendship.

It is about a gang of Greasers who have to live in the same town as the Socs. And how they do not get along! The wrong girl leads them into a fight and this is where everything starts to happen.

There has been made a movie about this book too. It's not as good as the book and I won't reccomend it for someone who hasn't read the book first, because there is so much you miss out. But the movie can be found on Youtube.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall ( 2008 ) was shown, and it was sooo funny! I got a little surprised when I got to see Jason Segel wee-wee and Mila Kunis tits. But it was funny :P Oh so funny :D

And it was so many people there! And the screen was like 13 metres, and the sound was good, and not to many people was standing up in the middle of the movie, and not alot of smoking! It didnt cost a think, and me and my friend had the best chairs ever.

They were seling popcorn and soda. It got darker after a while and when the movie began you could see the screen perfectly. I would say Horten Kino did really good!

Μέχρι πότε θα υποστηρίζουμε και θα υπερασπιζόμαστε την χώρα μας, εμείς οι απόδημοι που σας αντιπροσωπεύουμε και σας πρεσβεύουμε στο εξωτερικό; Διότι εμείς την κάνουμε την δουλειά της περαιτέρω εξάπλωσης του πολιτισμού μας έξω κι όχι οι Ζαχόπουλοι και οι Καραμαλήδες... ΚΥΡΙΩΣ ΟΧΙ ΑΥΤΟΙ!!!

Ψέματα θα του 'λεγα;

If you object to the wearing of the hijab or  khimār  you are a racist. If you accept it you are a woman hater. The truth as ever lies somewhere in the middle.

I have little objection to Islamic women wearing the Hijab outside of working or school environments.

Personally I think it's a pity; I think it is a symbol of repression of women and I resent its presence in a country that has famously had to fight for basic women's rights perhaps harder than in any other developed European modern country. I see it as a step back.

Personally I despise the weakness of women who adopt it and who effectively opt out of the difficulties of life. Yes, a man might look at you. Yes, it's easy to hide behind a scarf or a veil. Yes you're less likely to have to face issues of sexuality and gender politics - but it's hardly living is it?

And personally I am impatient of the hypocrisy that calls it "freedom" - if the Hijab makes you so free how come you can't let other Islamic girls choose not to wear it? And as for the hypocrisy that says it is not part of the repression of women - it's entire validity in Islam is based on a passage of the Koran Qur'an 24:31 and it's primary function if to instruct women not to "inflame" men. It strikes against the fundamental principle of Irish and European laws governing sexual assault - that principle that makes men responsible for their own actions, and rejects the plea that a women "led him on" by provocative dress. A principle that women had to fight damn hard for.

And the argument that it's cultural and therefore by default, must be accepted is belied by the Islamic world's lack of reciprocal respect for Western Culture: -   the kingdom of Saudi Arabia for example, who insisted the grieving mother of Simon Cumbers wear a full burka type covering before allowing her (finally) to see her son's body. Western female visitors to fundementalist Islamic countries are not offered the choice of wearing their own culturally acceptable clothes

But, having said all that, if some woman is silly enough to buy into the propaganda and make herself a scapegoat for men's irresponsibility, then fine. On her own time, she is entitled to do as she pleases, it is actually a free country. I can't have my own way about it.

But in work, and in school, I don't believe that anyone should flout the rules. I have many Hindu friends who can't send their kids to school in a sari. Mind you they don't think they should. I have Jewish friends whose children somehow manage to get through school life with a skull cap. I have Atheist friends and Pagan friends whose children attend primarily Catholic schools without taking offence at either the dress code or the underlying ethos. Their attitude is, if their children wish to take advantage of the Irish school system, they conform to that system.
And therein lies the rub Ladies and Gentlemen - we can't all have our own way. I haveto put up with grown women wearing the Hijab, despite my dislike of all it represents. I accept their right to do so. But in return the Islamic community has to  accept that they can't always have their own way either. If they wish to attend a mainstream Irish school they have to bow to the primary culture. Just as if anyone wants to live in Ireland they have to bow to the host culture. Luckily for us all the host culture is a democracy - not a theocracy. Democracies let everyone have their own culture as much as possible. But there is a compromise that has to be made

 - our culture has to have the same consideration as everyone else's. Bummer, eh?

Uma das experiências mais interessantes e inusitadas desta Virada Cultural foi o projeto holandês Silent Disco. Quem desembarcava do metrô São Bento na madrugada de sábado para domingo estranhava a situação. Cerca de 500 pessoas portando fones de ouvidos e dançando ao som de uma música que quem estava de fora não ouvia. Quem não sabia do que se tratava demorava a entender. Era uma pista de dança em que ninguém se falava e só se comunicava por linguagens corporais. “É ideal para dar uma festa num apartamento”, dizia um dos curiosos. “Muito louco”, emendava outro.

Alguns grupos ensaiavam coreografias e esporadicamente soltavam urros por conta das viradas dos DJs e de vez em quando os que estavam apenas de espectadores se viam cantando junto com quem estava na pista músicas mais conhecidas como Keep It Coming Love, do KC and the Sunshine Band, ou acompanhando com palmas os compassos de outras mais sincopadas. Um grupo de atores de teatro de rua chegou a convocar algumas pessoas a fazer uma “balada paralela”, imitando os passos de quem estava na pista e dançando ao som do silêncio.

O projeto funcionou da seguinte maneira: havia uma área fechada diante do Mosteiro de São Bento e quem entrava na pista recebia um fone de ouvido para entrar na balada. A cada hora o grupo devia sair e dar entrada para outro que se mantinha em fila. A experiência foi curiosa não só para quem observava de fora, mas para quem teve o privilégio de receber o tão cobiçado fone de ouvido. Você se sentia no mundo à parte. Meio à parte, em outro sentido, também ficaram algumas bandas independentes, cujo palco teve o som de pior qualidade técnica do evento. Os baianos do Retrofoguetes, com seu surf rock, teria segurado muito mais público não fosse o som estridente que prejudicou o divertido show da banda.

Já quem passou pelas outras áreas de balada eletrônica na 15 de Novembro parece não ter tido tanto prazer quanto os privilegiados do Silent Disco. Superlotada, com um calor infernal a rua e suas adjacências ficaram intransitáveis. Na falta de banheiros químicos (a maior deficiência da Virada), as portas dos edifícios viraram mictórios. Na alta madrugada, o odor era insuportável. Ali também foi o local de astral mais baixo da Virada, com cenas deprimentes nas calçadas. Muito esquisito.
