There was a recent thread on the Rails Studio alumni mailing list where Greg asked for help learning better web user interface design. The response was fantastic set of design resources, mainly books and links, which Greg was kind enough to summarize on this wiki page.

The resources are fantastic. Of course I was already familiar with several of them, but some were new; I'm sure most designers would say the same.

This guy over at Black Coffee & Bourbon, a blog filled with uplifting posts about the joys of life, tagged me to write five random things about myself. Here they are in no particular order:

I love breaking the rules and learning on my own. My Mom used to get so irritated that I always refused to have her help me with my homework all through my school years - but nothing felt better than getting a good grade because I earned it. While other students in sculpture class were building teapots - I was building a life size man. I was so lucky to be blessed with Art teachers who just let me do my own thing. Check it:

I am an Artist/Nerd. My oldest Brother taught me how to use a computer when I was 2 years old and have been addicted to them ever since (Thanks a lot Chip ;) ). When I was 20 years old I met who is now my husband who has officially initiated me into the 'nerdosphere' - haha! I'm handy with HTML & CSS language as well as a paintbrush and clay! :D

I LOVE to cook and have several Recipe books that I've used probably only about 3 times. I like a good challenge, and find it hard to follow the rules :( My only dilemma is writing down my 'made up recipes' so I end up not being able to make the same thing the same way twice. Oh well...

I only read directions when I've exhausted all other sources. I prefer following pictures :D

I prefer a comfy style to a trendy style. I was known as the girl in high school who didn't have a set style- but wore them all! HAHA! I guess I couldn't decide/ or didn't want to. :)

There they are, the first five random things that came to my mind. Here are some fellow bloggers I am tagging whose blogs I enjoy reading:

Amberfire.In.Us: This lady is a breath of fresh air to read her words. She reminds you of the peace of the world and encourages words from you. A conservative outlook on life and a reminder that though you may be down on your luck in some areas of life- doesn't mean that you have lost your strength in other ways. She is so strong and so inspiring as well as a loyal - true friend. :)

Livin It In London: I met this girl through my Endometriosis section of my blog. We relate on that topic and have become close friends since. It's so nice to have someone (though they may be 1,000's of miles away - entirely on a different continent ) who you can vent to and relate on several topics. Her blog is about the musings of her life and adventures therein. A very fun read!

The Ink: He is so random with his posts and that is why it is so much fun to read his blog. You name it- he's probably posted about it - take a look!

In the development process, he's one of the guys at the end of the line who still needs to meet deadlines even when his allotted time has been compressed by the rest of the team and the client.

Thats right, here at Paramiliar Design Studios we have produced a new set of FREE Website Layouts that can be used free of charge.

So what's so good about these layouts? Simple, the total file size is only 19Kb which is incredibly small for a website. Not only that but the entire layout is optimised for Search Engines and is XHTML Compliance.

While many of you had given us positive feedback in the past about the old design, we wanted to give a more "modern" feel to the site while maintaining the way the site is structured so that it is still easy to find information and use the site.

Hopefully, you will agree that the new look is a positive change but as always, we welcome any feedback - positive or negative - so please get in touch and let us know your thoughts on the new design.

We have done our best to iron out any bugs and ensure that the new design works well on all major browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari etc) but if you have noticed something that does not work/display as it should on your machine please give us a shout and we'll fix it asap.

If you are trying to do pixel-perfect cross-browser CSS layout, then you have probably ran into prob

If you are trying to do pixel-perfect cross-browser CSS layout, then you have probably ran into problems with IE . I am going to highlight the top 5 CSS hacks that we often use to have pixel perfect design.

1)Box Model Hack

The box model hack is used to fix a rendering problem in pre-IE 6 browsers, where the border and padding are included in the width of an element, as opposed to added on

padding: 2em; border: 1em solid blue; width: 30em; w\idth: 10.2em;

2) Conditional Comments

These conditional comments are for IE-only and they’re not supported by any other browser. For other browsers they are just ordinary comments and therefore, they are safe to use.

The typical usage is as follows:

The below code applies to all versions of Internet Explorer, i.e. 5.01, 5.5 and 6.0 except IE 7 and 8

IE (Any version of IE)

<!--[if IE]> Some CssCode<![endif]-->

lt IE version (Versions less than version)

<!--[if lt IE 6]> Some CssCode<![endif]-->

lte IE version(Versions less than or equal to version)

<!--[if lte IE 6]> Some Css Code<![endif]-->

IE version (Only version)

<!--[if IE 6]> Some Css Code<![endif]-->

gte IE version (Versions greater than or equal to version)

<!--[if gte IE 6]> Some Css Code<![endif]-->

gt IE version (Versions greater than version)

<!--[if gt IE 6]> Some Css Code<![endif]-->

3) Min-width and Max-width of an element

IE doesn’t understand this command, so we’ll need a new way of making this work in this browser. Let’s take a quick example, we need to apply this to a div with id="wrapper":

<wrapper><div id="nav">

Next we create our CSS commands, so as to create a minimum width of 750px:

#wrapper{min-width: 750px;width:expression(document.body.clientWidth < 750? "750px": "auto" );}

You might also want to combine this minimum width of 750px with a maximum width 1220px:

#wrapper{min-width: 750px;max-width: 1220px;width:expression(document.body.clientWidth < 750? "750px" : document.body.clientWidth > 1220? "1220px" : "auto");}

Another Alternative for min-height without javascript is to use Dustin Diaz’ nice hack: :

#id{ min-height: 100px; height:auto !important; height:100px; }

4) Easy Selectors

Most in-CSS hacks deal with selector bugs. Below is a list of different IE versions and the beginnings of selectors that are known to select elements in them. All of these selectors use valid CSS.

IE 6 and below

* html {}

IE 7 and below

*:first-child+html {} * html {}

IE 7 only

*:first-child+html {}

IE 7 and modern browsers only

html>body {}

Modern browsers only (not IE 7)

html>/**/body {}

Recent Opera versions 9 and below

html:first-child {}

5)Transparent PNGs

Now a days most of the website preferring png transparent IMG . Transparent PNG image was support by Mozilla firefox and IE 7. So we are here to hack the lower version than IE 7 which doesnot support transparent PNG image.

Although we can replace the png file with gif image format but it willnot be good idea to replace with gif image format because they aren’t good for higher resolution images. So, better way is to hack with CSS.

we need 2 files

1. iefix.htc

2. transparent.gif

Download files

Add one simple line of CSS code to your ie.css file

img.iefix { behavior: url(iefix.htc); }

Making changes to the layout

Making changes to the layout
CSS makes it very easy to change the style of a document. Let's say we wanted to move the picture in the title of this page to the right by 10 pixels. This would be a nightmare in a table based design. We would have to open every page and alter the table width manually.

Fortunately we have used CSS, and all we have to do is open our CSS file which stores the layout of the site, and change the number relating to the position of the image. That will change his position throughout the whole site.

The look and layout of a site can be changed beyond recognition just by altering the CSS file. This makes CSS indispensable for large web sites.

File Size
Probably the mostly useful feature of CSS is that all of the style and layout is removed from the html, so the html page size is very much smaller. The CSS file is downloaded just once by the visitor's browser and re-used for different pages on a web site. This reduces the bandwidth requirements for your server and also ensures a faster download for your visitors.

Search Engines
A search engine robot will normally consider the content in the start of your html code is more important than the text towards the end of the code. For a table based page the contents of the navigation bar will normally show up as the page description in search engine results. With a CSS page the navigation can be moved to the bottom of the source code, so the search engine displays your content instead of your navigation.

Accessibility
Separating style from content makes life very easy for visitors who prefer to view only the content of a web page, or to modify the content. These could be blind or partially sighted people who might use a screen reader to interpret a page.

Consistency
Layout and position of navigation can be completely consistent across a site. This was previously possible only using frames.

Disadvantages of CSS
CSS does not work consistently in different browsers. Microsoft Internet Explorer and Opera support CSS in a pretty logical way. Unfortunately their logic does not conform to current CSS standards.

Netscape and Firefox conform more closely to the standards, so a site could look quite different on Internet Explorer from the way it looks in Firefox. This discrepancy restricts the CSS features that can be used on a site - because Firefox is becoming more and more popular the site must be designed for both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Dreamweaver MX design view has it's own set of limitations (although I'm told Dreamweaver 2004 is an improvement).

CSS doesn't work at all in very early versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape. These browsers will display your page as plain html. This is not necessarily a problem - a quick look at our logs suggest that less than 0.1% of visitors are using browsers that are incompatible with CSS, and they will still be able to use our pages, just without the layout.

An umbrella term for the second wave of the World Wide Web. Sometimes called the “New Internet,”

An umbrella term for the second wave of the World Wide Web. Sometimes called the “New Internet,” Web 2.0 is not a specific technology; rather, it implies two paradigm shifts. The one most often touted is “user-generated content,” and the second is “thin client computing.”

1)  The User Rules!
User-generated content, comprised of blogs, wikis and social networking sites, such as Facebook,Hi5,MySpace and Friendster, let everyone have their say on anything and publish it to the world at large. As Web applications become more sophisticated, people can easily develop elaborate personal Web pages, create a blog, and upload their own opinions, audio and video. Users are augmenting the news by reporting current events sometimes faster and with details often overlooked or ignored by the professional news media.

Although millions of opinions and videos, often very amateurish, only add to our information overload, a significant advantage to user-generated content is that truly talented authors, artists, musicians and movie makers can gain an audience much more easily than they could in the past. Word-of-mouth via the Internet is worth a fortune in promotion. Web 2.0 is leveling the playing field in all arenas just as the PC leveled the playing field in business. See blog, wiki, social networking site, MySpace, YouTube and paradigm.

2)  Thin Client Computing
In thin client computing, data and applications are stored on Web servers, and a user has access from any computer via a Web browser. Thin clients are not a new concept for the Internet, but many believe that thin client computing will eventually supplant locally installed office and other applications and that turning the Web into a gigantic application server is the ultimate manifestation of Web 2.0.

In time, this could have significant impact on the type of personal computers users choose. As more software is executed from scripts embedded in Web pages, the CPU chips and operating systems become less relevant. Browsers interpret scripts the same way no matter which hardware or software environment they reside in.

In 2007, Google combined several of its office applications into Standard and Premium Editions, the latter a paid service with tech support. Because of Google’s influence, this was a watershed event for thin client computing and Web 2.0 (see Google Apps). See ASP, Web application and Enterprise 2.0.

What Caused Web 2.0?
Bandwidth and power. Faster in many cases than the T1 lines in the enterprise, cable and DSL hookups have extended high-speed connections to individuals and small businesses. In addition, the entry level computer has become powerful enough to execute programming scripts in an HTML page without noticeable delays. Combined with refinements in Web programming, the Web has become a transparent extension of an individual’s PC just as local area networks (LANs) extended the user’s computing resources inside the enterprise in the 1980s and 1990s. See AJAX.

Web Evolution
In the mid-1990s, the Web began (Web 1.0) as a repository of information and static content. Within a couple years, a huge amount of content was dynamic, returning custom results to users. By the turn of the century, the Web became much more interactive (say Web 1.5), allowing users to play, stop, rewind and fast forward through audio and video content. Web 2.0 makes Web-based applications act like local applications, but on a worldwide scale with the social implications mentioned above. In the discussion of Web 2.0, the 1.0 and 1.5 generation labels may be used occasionally, but there is no formal classification.

I have now taken my artistic talent and migrated to the more 'technical art' in blog design. WOW - has it made me a busy lady! I still try to do a sketch a day. I'm currently teaching myself how to do the extreme opposite of realism and learn how to draw comics :D :

When I get a free moment I bring out my art pencils and airbrush paint - but those moments have been few and far between lately. Hopefully things can calm down a bit- but my heart will always be with the original Graphite & Paint. :)
