The Liver bird (pronounced /'laivebed/) is the symbol of the city of Liverpool, England.
The word "liver" in the name of the bird rhymes with "diver", rather than with "river".

Spesies apakah ia?
Nama Liverbird sendiri awalnya tercetus kala The Earl of Derby menghibahkan sebuah tongkat kebesaran dengan ucapan "engraved with ... a leaver", yang akhirnya dijadikan sebuah rujukan atas nama Liver bird tersebut.

While I was in my dentist's office waiting to get my teeth cleaned, I came across this article about a new product from Crest called Crest Weekly Clean Intensive Cleaning Paste.

This is a once-a-week cleaning regimen that will get your teeth almost as clean as if you had them professionally done by a dentist. It is, however, not a substitute for getting your teeth cleaned by a professional, it's just a way to keep your teeth clean between visits. It is not a tooth-whitener but it will help keep your teeth cleaner and help diminish stains your teeth get from the food and drinks you consume.

It contains ActivClean Crystals and finely ground silica that dissolve in your saliva and clean your teeth as you brush. Don't use it as a substitute for regular toothpaste because this wonder product does NOT contain fluoride.

It only costs $3.99 and is only to be used 1x a week. Apparently it will be available in a store near you in mid-September so keep your eyes open and give it a try!

You only get 1 set of permanent teeth and it's important to keep them clean and healthy. That's why regular visits to the dentist and daily brushing and flossing are a must!

For more information about this product you can check out this link.

One might, by looking at the Fallon jewelry collection, mistake the assortment of crest-shaped earrings, dangerously sharp rings, and heavily chain-laden bracelets for a mini weapons armory. Here at Buydefinition.com, we think this is perfectly fine, since only something as striking as weaponry could perfectly compliment the tough aesthetic this season has in store for us.

A short Q&A session with Ms. Dana Lorenz:

Buydefinition.com: What inspires your jewelry line?
Dana Lorenz: I am most inspired usually by nostalgic things from my past—it could be things I used to wear in high school, or songs I used to put on mix tapes (God, really dating myself there.)

BD: What got you into designing your own jewelry?
DL: A friend asked me to design jewelry for his runway show and everything grew from there. Magazines and stores started calling and I had to turn a small, personal endeavor into a full-fledged collection.

BD: What advice would you give to aspiring jewelry designers out there?
DL: Don’t be afraid to try something different. My most crazy ideas end up being the most successful.

BD: What is your favorite part about being a designer?
DL: Seeing [my] pieces worn on the streets. We spend so much time developing the collections in our own little world that when I see [the piece] exist after it’s bought and worn it’s an amazing thrill.

------------

Fallon may start at a lower price point, but don’t let the affordable price tags fool you—the pieces are still incredibly fashion-forward. Inspired by the chic urban girl, “someone not afraid to go her own way, someone who takes risks and ends up setting the trends.” Fallon seamlessly blends a Don’t-Mess-with-Me attitude with everyday wearability. It’s jewelry you can incorporate into any outfit you can think of, any time of day. “Even if that ends up being your boyfriend’s old shirt.”

I want to drop a sneak preview of my new apparel line on everyone. It is aptly named Sevendevil. The line encompasses a multitude of sensibilities. It plays into the ‘darker’ side of human existence while celebrating art, chaos, beauty and refinement. I cannot go into great detail about the new line since it is still being developed, but I will showcase each new piece once it goes into production.

Keep on eye out for Sevendevil though. It will be making its debut at MAGIC - August 25, 26 & 27th. The event is held at the Las Vegas Convention Center (Las Vegas Hilton). MAGIC is where new trends surface and develop into what will be seen on the consumer. The show’s goal is to connect and inspire the fashion community, fuse diverse trends, while offering unbeatable service to its customers. Basically…this is the place to be when establishing new apparel.

Let me know your thoughts people. I have great expectations for this new line. I want it to compel, motivate, inspire, anger, disgust or please anyone who views it. I want to spark an emotion with these new designs.

Keep checking back to the site. We have many great projects in the works as well as a lot of new designs to showcase.

After reading Seth Godin’s “cheap” grill story I now know why Seth is trying so ha

After reading Seth Godin's "cheap" grill story I now know why Seth is trying so hard to make money. His idea of a cheap grill is not my idea of cheap. That's not the point of the post. But, this is my time so too bad. I wonder if he lives beneath his means? Seth, Seth, Seth...you should know better! hehe

First, the reporter was an idiot for taking that much time with a grill. (not cheap in my opinion) However, all purchases come with a funny thing called a Warranty of Merchantability. This means if you buy something and it never works as it was suppose to...by law Home Depot has to refund your money. He should have taken that sucker back the moment he saw trouble. But, instead he spent all that time /money/then wrote a stupid article that took up valuable space on a newspaper. Or maybe he had nothing to write. Maybe he was suffering from writers block? Who knows?

I'm a tad disappointed that Seth doesn't live beneath his means...such an easy way to make money. However, I do agree with his point that as consumers we are responsible for the behaviors of marketers. As a general rule the masses control what is marketed because they buy the stuff and then the "marketing" is seen as a success. However, where drugs are concerned, I emphatically disagree . Ask pharmaceutical salesmen? I know a few. They offer vacations, prizes and who knows what else to the doctor's that get X number of prescriptions to X number of patients. Gone are the days where the drug salesperson comes and leaves pens/paper. At 43 and having parents who are getting older etc. I have had contact with a lot of doctors. Drugs are pushed onto the patient. Doctors want money. Just like the masses, they want more...

Money, Hoping to Get Laid,Sports and Shopping. Those are the main motivators in our society. I think it's pathetic.(not the sex thing that's good) People making millions or more a year. If their charitable, I can see the point in making that kind of money. But, most aren't charitable. Most make a lot of money and have a large bank account/drive the finest car etc. and their wives go and buy shoes. In a way, I'm envious, I wish I was that easily amused.

But, shopping just doesn't float my boat. Neither does driving a fine car. I have a Subaru Forrester. It's the oldest car I've ever owned or bought. But, I pay cash for cars. Great sex is another story. Hey, it's free, fun and healthy.(I'm married/monogamous) What motivates me is learning. Not consuming. So, a lot of advertising gets on my nerves. And, I'm the sort that boycotts products because of intrusive ads. Or I'll boycott a whole brand because of the marketing plan. For instance, I don't buy any products from Oral B or any related to Oral B. The Oral B toothbrush(the sonic type) is marketed by "The Video Game Strategy". New models always coming out and old parts don't fit the new models or they created new parts and you can't find the old ones etc.. Crest recently teamed up with Oral B, so I don't use Crest anymore. I know I'm extreme/not normal. Me not being normal, according to my husband, is one reason I'm "charming" to him. What a great guy God has given me. Thank you!

27 July 2008
The Fleur de Lis; a symbol steeped in antiquity. Also, a symbol that appears throughout my house in a variety of forms. The Fleur de Lis appears in my personal coat of arms, and thus in the marshalled coat that my wife & I share. I'm not sure which came first, MB's love of the symbol, or the marshalled coat of arms. Either way, she's adopted it almost as a person sigil and as mentioned before it appears in many nooks and crannies of my life. This is a candle holder in the bedroom.

(The following is a commencement address given by Patrick Scullin, ECD of Ames Scullin O’Haire Advertising/Atlanta, to the graduating class of The Huckington School of Advertising Arts & Sciences & Whatnot in Stoneboro, Pennsylvania)

Greetings, graduating class of 2008. I am honored to be here and delighted that this P.A. system is working. “Check, one-two. Check. Ladies and gentlemen–– The Rolling Stones!”

Uh, just kidding.

(Silence envelopes the crowd. A cricket chirps. A mime slowly slashes his vocal chords...)

As I stand here today looking out at all you young, eager and energetic, hopeful people, I realize I am seeing our most valuable asset for the future. I am speaking of course not about youth, but about gold.

For I see that many of you are wearing glittering gold jewelry. Gold is our most precious asset because it gleams and people have always valued a good gleam. History is filled with stories of gold and its fantabulous value.

Take Midas. Everything he touched turned to gold, but remember that he made his fortune in mufflers and brake repair. Shocks, too. And never underestimate what you can get for a good alignment job.

Then there was that goose that laid golden eggs and that woman who spun gold–– both skills that look great on a resume and really help boost one’s popularity.

And what about the incredible story of Jed Clampett, a poor mountaineer who was shooting for some food when up from the ground came a bubblin’ crude–– oil, that is, children, black gold, Texas tea. I think we all know the happy ending of that story: swimming pools, movie stars. Yes, gold can change lives for the better.

Gold has always been worth its weight in gold, and now that you will be pursuing a career in advertising, gold will soon be yours. Next to advanced vinyl repair or being Warren Buffet, there’s no easier way to make BIG money fast than advertising.

I’d like to share some wisdom I’ve learned throughout my distinguished career. Wisdom I wish some learned person had told me when I was young and being thrust from the comforting incubator of academia into the cold reality of constant disappointment, bitter frustration and the awful agony that is this miserable hell on earth we must endure before our reward of a dirt nap and discovery if we’ve bet on the right religion.

In advertising, it’s our job to "communicate" with people in clear, concise words and visuals that leave no room for ambiguity or opportunity for miscommunication, which in and of itself would be a form of communication, but not the form of communication you originally intended and so would be bad because it is not what you set out to do when you set out to do what you originally set out to do. The communicating part, I mean.

To communicate clearly, I think language comes in handy. The importance of language cannot be expressed in silly little words, but the effects speak for themselves–– especially those energetic verbs shoving lazy good for nothing nouns around and forcing them pick up the pace.

We can also communicate with images. Someone once said ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ but try communicating that with just one picture. Can’t be done. You need words–– about seven of them should do: a picture is worth a thousand words.

In advertising, our job is to communicate in persuasive ways, making our clients’ products or services absolutely irresistible. How does one entice the public into buying? With psychology, or as I call it “mental tom foolery and tinker-majiggity-wiggity-woo-woo.”

All humans want love, security, sex appeal, power, soft gripped kitchen utensils, immortality, whiter teeth and X-ray vision. So pass your client’s product or service through the prism of potential consumer triggers.

A soft drink is not just carbonated sugar water; it can be the ticket to making someone irresistible. For example, take a picture of attractive people gathered around a soft drink smiling and looking as if an orgy might break out at any moment. Marry it to a provocative headline like, “Refresh all your parts.” Slap a logo in the lower right corner and you’ve got yourself a sure strong seller (logos always go in the right corner, unless your ad is running in the Torah).

Some say that the public is less susceptible to our messages. They claim a growing cynicism has made it nearly impossible to gain the trust of the public through paid media. To that I say, "Oh yeah?"

A suspicious public is merely one that needs more selling. Which means adding extra power to your messages. Watch how easy this is.

Before: Crest toothpaste fights cavities. After: “Crest toothpaste fights cavities. It really does, honest. Ask your dentist if you don’t believe us, you cynical soon-to-be-toothless bastard!”

Before: Nike. Swoosh symbol. After: “Nike represents wonderfulness in quality athletic footwear that gives one a sense of coolness. And now Nikes come in styles for your left and your right foot. Step lively, friend… step Nike!”

Before: BMW. The ultimate driving machine. After: "I care about the attractiveness of my automobile—mister, make mine a BMW!"

With the correct message, cynicism melts like ice in Satan’s tumbler.

There is much more I could say, but I see by your subtle body language— the closed eyelids and raised middle fingers—that perhaps you’ve heard enough.

Thank you. Remember one thing: don’t sell your souls for 30 pieces of silver. Hold out for 30 pieces of gold. Gold’s the cheese you want, people.

And one last thing–– could someone validate my parking, please?

I hope everyone is doing well. I mean this in a good way, but everything has been crazy here for us here at W70. I have been working on many high profile projects and I'm almost to the point of being able to showcase them. Please keep ckecking back. In the meantime, I want to share an illustration I created yesterday evening.

My high school reunion is this weekend. I was commisioned to create a new crest that represents the class of 1988. Yeah...I'm that old! I'm cool with it though. I'm looking forward to seeing old classmates as well as having an evening off to enjoy myself. I hope everyone enjoys the design!

Keep your eyes on the site kids....I'm back and I'll be showcasing new apparel, skateboards and music tour merchandise.

Take it easy,

The good thing is that it doesn't make your teeth sensitive like the Whitening strips do and its a simple toothpaste so you can just brush and go. I'm gonna keep using it to see how white my teeth get. I can't find anything about it online except for press releases but I am sure that it is available in Kuwait and Lebanon for anyone interested.

There are few elements that symbolise an organised group more than its crest.

From the very moment Barça was founded, the club had its own emblem that the players proudly wore on their shirts. It was the coat of arms of the city of Barcelona, a diamond shape divided into four quarters, with a crown and a bat on top, and surrounded by two branches, one of a laurel tree and the other a palm. This, even at such an early stage, was a way of expressing the club’s link to the city in which it was born.

This crest remained unchanged until 1910. Shortly after Gamper had saved the club from serious crisis in 1908, a decision was made to give the club its own differentiated crest. In 1910, the club held a competition between all the members interested in presenting proposals. The winner was Carles Comamala, who played for the club between 1903 and 1912, and was a medicine student at the time, as well as being a fine artist. And so the crest that the club wears to this day was created, although there have been a few variations. It is a bowl-shaped design, in which the two upper quarters maintain the St George Cross and the red and yellow bars of the original, which are the most representative symbols of Barcelona and Catalonia. The club initials FCB appear on a strip across the centre, and below are the Barça colours and a ball. So, what we have is a crest that honours the sporting dimension of the club as well as its connection to its city and country.

Since 1910, the changes made to the design have been minimal, generally just modifying the aesthetics and the patterns used for the outline. The biggest changes came about as a result of political obligations. When Franco came to power, the letters FCB were replaced by CFB, to reflect the way the club was forced to use the Spanish version of its name. The dictatorship also obliged the club to remove two of the four bars from one of the upper quarters, thus excluding the Catalan flag from the crest. On occasion of the club’s 50th anniversary in 1949, the four bars returned. The original letters were not recovered until late 1974, when the crest reverted to the original 1910 design.

The present crest is based on an adaptation made by designer Claret Serrahima in 2002, in which the lines are a little more stylised, the dots between the letters have been taken away, the name has been made smaller, and there are fewer pointed edges. The lines in this latest design are somewhat simpler, to make it easier for the crest and the club’s corporate identity to be reproduced in all the different formats.

My design assignment this week is to redesign a package for a pharmaceutical or toy. I shopped me so

My design assignment this week is to redesign a package for a pharmaceutical or toy. I shopped me some WalMart, almost went for diet pills, but settled down with toothpaste instead. In my mind, I was going to be designing the generic. Nope. I'm redesigning a nice box of Crest. And what I'm finding through my research is that Colgate and Crest have designers with ADHD. There's 26 different package designs for Colgate and over 30 for Crest. They're busy. So how do I take a Crest, and redesign it and get an "A"? I have no freaking clue. I've got the mint splash flavor, extra white with scope.

I've looked up the definitions for mint, and for splash, and their definitions are exactly what you'd expect. No inspiration drawn from there. The design for Rembrandt toothpaste received some praise, so I'm looking at following their lead. Very simple. Like a tuxedo for the toothpaste box. But the problem I have is there is so much type on this little box of Crest. You can't have both a tuxedo and gobs of text.

Why did I pick toothpaste? Do I have a death wish or something? Why didn't I go with my first instinct--diet pills? How hard could that have been? My research only needed to have been photographs of women near anorexia. Slap that bitch on a box and voila. I had no idea that graphic design was such a task of problem-solving. I am not a good problem solver!!! LOL

Mental Health and Harmony …
… North East London Mental Health Trust (NELMHT) and PSS Together (PSST) would like to invite you to a free Waltham Forest Mental Health Conference from 9.45am to 1.45pm on Monday 30th June 2008 at Harmony Hall, 10 Truro Road, Walthamstow, London E17 7BY. Lunch and light refreshments included. The conference will look at current mental health topics, including

Recovery and Well-being in mental health

What Recovery and Well-being in mental health will mean for voluntary sector organisations in Waltham Forest

An update on NELMHT’s application for Foundation Trust status and how you can be involved

Key speakers include:

Judy Wilson, Chief Executive, NELMHT

Contact Diane or Rob at PSST on 020 8509 0812 for further details.

Mental health affects everyone and good mental health
is as important as good physical health

“We’re Going to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo – How About You, You, You” …
… is the title of an exciting outing to be undertaken by 28 users of the Waltham Forest Mental Health Befriending Service to London Zoo on 1st July 2008. This is all thanks to Community TeamWorks, the community involvement programme of investment bank Goldman Sachs who are allowing their staff a day off work to volunteer for a project benefiting the community.

At the end of July, users of CREST’s Albany Project for Older People with a Disability will also have the same opportunity, courtesy again of Goldman Sachs, under the project title “We’re Going to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo – Part Two, Two, Two”.
As if all this were not enough, in May a team of twelve volunteers gave the CREST office a much-needed redecoration (under the project title “Paint the Day Away”).

Farewell, So Long …
… after six years of being CREST’s Mental Health Befriending Co-ordinator, Malcolm Couldridge is leaving. As well as being the architect of the Waltham Forest Mental Health Befriending Service over that period, recruiting innumerable volunteers who have provided literally hundreds of hours support to people experiencing mental health problems, Malcolm has tirelessly helped determine the direction of CREST. He will be much missed in the CREST office and remembered for his patience, kindness and overall commitment to the plight of those experiencing mental health problems in Waltham Forest.

So Where Does This Leave the Mental Health Befriending Service Now? …
… The funding from Capital Volunteering, the funding stream that has been supporting the Service since January 2006 has come to an end. At the present time we do not have the funding in place to replace Malcolm Couldridge with another worker. In the interim, whilst funding is being sought, the current Service will be maintained by Alan Horne, Co-ordinator of CREST, and Mike Pritchard, Chair of CREST. We will however not be able to train any new volunteers for the time being nor will we be able to accept new referrals of users to the Service until further notice.

As far as future funding is concerned, we have already got through the first stage of a lottery bid and are currently in the process of preparing the second stage alongside other funding bids.
Somewhat ironically, Malcolm has actually left the Waltham Forest Mental Health Befriending Service in a very strong position. We currently have:

Seventeen volunteers actively providing one-to-one befriending support to eighteen service users on a regular basis

Two additional volunteers making weekly calls to service users on the waiting list for a befriending service

Nine more volunteers awaiting a matching with a service user

Plus an additional twelve new volunteers who have just completed a training course, awaiting the receipt of references and CRB checks.

Forty volunteers in total!
If you have any spare daytime availability and would like to provide some daytime administrative support to the Service through this difficult time, please contact Alan Horne.

Ex-CREST President Dies in Jamaica
… ex-CREST President and irreplaceable pioneer of the UK’s Black Church movement, The Reverend Io Smith, has died, aged seventy. Rev Dr Io Smith was a minister in the New Testament Assembly, one of the UK’s best known Black Majority Churches, in which she served as pastor and international representative. She was also known as the author of the book “An Ebony Cross: Being Black in Britain Today” (published in 1989) which has a foreword by Archbishop Robert Runcie. Dr Smith was a key figure in establishing Black Christianity in the UK.
Arriving in London in 1957, as a Baptist, she responded to the rejection and unfriendliness she experienced by joining a Black Pentecostal Church. This paved the way to leadership roles in the church and wider community. She pastored at New Testament Assembly in Leyton, was Development Officer at the Zebra Project in Tower Hamlets, assisting in the development of CREST’s Zebra Project in Waltham Forest. She also worked in partnership with CREST developing holiday Playscheme provision in Leyton. She was General Secretary of the New Testament Assembly for 25 years. Ten years ago she was awarded an MBE for her contribution to community work.
Dr Smith died on Sunday 11th May 2008 in her native island of Jamaica where she returned to live in 1999. She is survived by her husband, Leonard Smith, five children and grandchildren. The funeral took place in Jamaica on 29th May 2008.

CREST Speaker Wins Prestigious Award …
… Liz Miller, co-founder of the Doctors Support Network, which provides support for doctors experiencing mental health problems, has been awarded the prestigious MIND Champion of the Year Award. Liz was the keynote speaker at CREST’s Mental Health and Stigma Conference held at the Education Centre in Walthamstow in May 2006. Liz’s story was featured in the national Guardian on Wednesday 11th June.
