More and more teens and college students have credit cards. Like the population at large, some have

More and more teens and college students have credit cards. Like the population at large, some have good deals and some don't.

Credit card companies target these groups because they are a fast-growing segment of the population and they have money to spend. So it's no surprise when a high schooler or a college freshman receives piles of offers.

If you're a college student, or the parent of a college student, Bankrate.com can help you find the best credit card deals. Just go to our student credit card survey.

You'll see rates that are generally higher than normal cards. Look carefully, because while these cards are easy to get, the card companies commonly offer them with heftier fees and interest rates, as well as smaller credit limits.

Parental responsibility
Student credit cards are easy to get because parents are often obliged to back up their children in the event the child runs a little short. Even if they aren't legally obligated to, parents commonly come to the rescue and pay those bills. So parents, make sure you read all the terms, especially with co-signed cards. You'll probably be there for the children, but it's nice to know the rules beforehand.

Which brings up another golden rule: Students should use the cards only for emergencies. (Pizza is not an emergency.) Otherwise they're paying high premiums for everyday purchases, running the risk of damaged credit and learning some bad credit habits at an early age.

Consider voluntary limits
Consider putting a voluntary limit of less than the card company will allow. After all, if the card is used for emergencies only, you don't need all those thousands of credit dollars out there tempting you.

If a young person has a credit history and can qualify for a regular credit card, it may work out to be a better deal. (Pizza still is not an emergency.)

All students and teens should remember that credit cards are a stepping-stone to a solid credit history -- something of major importance to their futures. Misused, they can add a mark on their credit records that will take years to erase.

Security with secured cards
Secured cards are another option for teens and students. Banks commonly offer these products, which are cards where the cardholder puts money in the bank as security. That money guarantees the card issuer will be paid if the cardholder fails to pay the bills. The credit limit is determined by how much is secured in the bank as collateral.

There are also cards available that allow parents to link a child's card to the parents' accounts, or let them keep refilling the teen's or student's accounts as they go along. It's a way to keep up with what's going on and limit spending, but still provide the freedom and convenience of a card.

Parents also need to be careful in case teens apply for and receive credit cards without the parents' knowledge. It's not supposed to happen to anyone under 18, but there is ample anecdotal evidence of people far younger filling out forms and getting their cards.

<span style=”font-size: 12pt; font-weight: nor

After my bankruptcy was filed, I made a huge mistake. I didn’t apply for any credit. In fact, I waited two long years before even attempting to get a credit card. My credit scores didn’t go up much, and I was in pretty bad shape from a personal credit standpoint. Then, I discovered the sub-prime credit market.

One of the little secrets about credit is you have to use credit in order to build your scores. If, after a bankruptcy, you don’t have any credit, your scores will stay very flat. In order to fix this, you have to get credit, and use it responsibly. Each month that you make an online payment, you will get a small boost in your scores. This small boost, over time, will give you a much better credit score. You will also have access to more credit as your scores build. You HAVE to make sure your report stays clean!

The first thing you can do is try to apply with a couple of different creditors. Orchard Bank, Household Bank, and Target will all give a person a chance on rebuilding their credit. However, they may want your bankruptcy to be discharged before they will talk to you. Orchard bank usually gives a starting credit limit of $300.00 to $500.00, and Household bank is at about the same level. Target starts most people with a $200.00 limit.

You can apply for all of these cards online. They are real credit cards, unsecured, and they all report to all three of your credit reports monthly.

If they turn you down, try for a secured card. In my next blog entry, I will give you more information about that.

Here are links for the banks I mentioned:

We got a lovely little piece of mail the other day that's going to put money in my pocket, and money in yours if you took my advice and signed up for the TrueEarnings card from Costco and American Express.

Enroll in the program and spend $1,000 on non-Costco purchases and you will get an additional 1% cash back on every eligible purchase (up to $200 extra!) between September 1 and October 31st!

That means I'll be getting 4% cash back on gas, 3% on travel and 2% for every other non-Costco purchase.

And you know what else? I don't have to wait for my rebate check to receive the extra cash back. It comes as a statement credit to my account 6-8 weeks after the promotion ends.

You have to be invited to participate. If you're worried that you may have mistakenly tossed your invitation go to www.americanexpress.com/costco1000 and you can enter your login and password to see if you're invited.

There's lots of fine print, so check that out, of course.

It's a great deal for me. I hope you can take advantage, too!

Johannesburg - While the recent build-up of debt in South African households is alarming, there is no way of knowing how much worse it will get.

Nor do policy makers know whether overindebtedness will reach a point where debt defaults will threaten the financial system.

Andre Bezuidenhout, the Reserve Bank's head of the financial stability department, made these points at a recent workshop on overindebtedness. The workshop was organised by the FinMark Trust. More...

I suggest while you are at it you request information on all charges (such as late payment and over limit charges) that have been applied to your account.
What is credit score? It is what tells your creditor whether you will be able to pay of your loan an

What is credit score? It is what tells your creditor whether you will be able to pay of your loan and also decides if you will have a high or low interest rate. It consists of three numbers. If your credit score is low, then there is every possibility that your loan application will be disapproved, of course you will not want this to happen, but your loan application will only be approved if you have a good credit score.

A good credit score is 700 or higher, this is stated by experts. This is not a unrealistic figure to achieve as statistics have shown that 60% of people are able to do this. The thing you must do to get this number is pay your bills on time which includes credits cards and other loans that you have had in the past. By doing this you will stop yourself incurring any penalties that will be reflected and lower your credit report.

Why are some people not able to get a good credit score? This may be that they have been unable to pay there bills on time or have not paid a loan back as it was scheduled. If this is so then the amount of money they owe begins to accumulate. This often happens because of some peoples uncontrollable urge to shop, while watching the interest grow on there debts.

Those who ignore calls or any mail from there bank or loan company will be dubbed as unpaid. This information is posted on your credit report, so lenders which you might approach in the future will already be careful of coming to an loan agreement with you.

Basically to obtain a good credit score, you have to pay your debts. Cutting down on your expenses, working overtime, even getting a second job and selling some stuff can be a help, but normally it is not enough. This is why it is always best to talk to your creditors so an arrangement can be made with them.

Another option could be to borrow money from friends and relatives. The main benefit by doing this, is that they hopefully will not charge you any interest. But remember if you do not repay them you will lose the only people you can turn to if you have a problem.

You could receive a good credit score if you are able to monitor your expenses. One piece of advice that a lot of experts say is that if you have a credit card, you should only use up about 25% of the limit. To avoid interest, make sure that you pay the whole amount and not just the minimum at the end of the month.

A good credit score should be at least 700 and above is even better. This will mean you are able to get loans at a low interest rate. Always remember, you may be doing well this year, but things can always change over the next 12 months. So if you wish to keep things as they are, monitor where your money is going, because when it comes to overspending, there is no one to blame except yourself.

Recent research has shown that most people develop their good and bad habits at an early age. So if you wish to become a responsible person, you need to learn the right things now and start to be responsible now! You must learn how to deal with money, this is a very important task, it is so easy to get in to the habit to spend more than what you actually earn.

If you do get in to the habit of spending more than you earn, then it will cause you a lot of problems in the future. It may cause you to consider a payday loan, this is definitely not the best option for you to take and is not a very good option because this is considered one of the risky solutions available to over-spenders.

Payday loans can be a good solution for people who need money when a urgent situation arises. But before you apply for a payday loan, you need to weigh up the risks, you do not need to be caught up in a debt trap that can only worsen your current situation.

There are definitely disadvantages in applying for a payday loan. The main one, that you must consider is the high cost, as the annual interests can reach 400 to 800% in some cases.

Always try to budget you money with appropriate financial planning. If you do not, then you will often resort to borrowing money. It is advisable that at the start of each month you set a realistic monthly budget, this is so that you can already balance out your earnings and expenditures.

Make sure if at all possible that you save a portion of your earnings for that unexpected bill or emergency, this way your savings will stop you having to apply for a payday loan. There are many counseling bureaus that can help you out in preparing your monthly budget and best of all most of these are free.

Any payments that are urgent can be made through your credit cards. This is a far better option than taking out a payday loan, as the interest is much lower. If you do not have a credit card, then consider talking to your employer and asking for a cash advance, be open and honest and you will find normally that you employer will be very understanding.

If things are that bad, do not go for payday loan yet. You could always ask your friends or relatives if they can lend you some money and tell them exactly when and how long it will take you to pay them back. As long as you do pay them back on time, they will always help you out in the future.

It is always best to consider your other options before you take the plunge and apply for a payday loan. Payday loans do have there advantages, but the disadvantages are so obvious and as long as you can avoid applying for one, try to do so. only apply for one when you are sure you have exhausted all the other options.

Get more information about payday loan issues, such as Payday Loan Tips where you will find everything you need to know about the Payday Loan Facts and much more.

In my line of work, I pretty much have to deal with tired, anxious, cranky, complainers! But I still

In my line of work, I pretty much have to deal with tired, anxious, cranky, complainers! But I still love my job. I work as a night auditor for a Marriott brand hotel with three floors and 61 rooms, so its kinda small.

For the ones that don't know what a night auditor job consists of... according to this Marriott anyways... a night auditor is all three shifts rolled into one. I take care of late, late check ins, do housekeepings job if needed, do the nightly audit (which is just all the paper work of how much the hotel made in credit card sales, cash, how many rooms were sold, etc.), backing up the systems, making breakfast, and checking guests out if needed. All that from 11pm to 7am.

Now picture doing all of that while taking care of all the nightly complaints of rooms smelling bad, temperatures not right, not having enough rooms to switch people to or having to downgrade someone from a room with a king bed and a jacuzzi to a room that has two standard double queen beds just because something was wrong with the room and then getting written up the next day because that person complained... If your going to complain about the room, then leave if the problem can't be resolved. We don't post to your credit cards until the next morning. Take your money somewhere else! Just don't be surprised if the other hotel isn't as nice.

Where ever I go I have to carry the phone with me cause I'm the only one on the shift. So at 3am I have people calling, while I'm backing up the system which cannot be interrupted or all the info won't be backed up, wanting a reservation for like two weeks in advance. I just sit there thinking "Why the hell would you call up a hotel at 3am to make a reservation so far in advance, especailly when you could have gone to the website?" Like thats the only time they have to do it... And then those are usually the guests that cancel. Its retarded!

Another cool thing about my job is that I have to process what is called "GNS" or Guarenteed No Shows. If you make a reservation and know that you can't make it, call and cancel it, you won't be penalised for it! Cause if you don't call and cancel, guess what, you STILL have to pay for that room! If you see that you still payed for the room on your bank statement, don't get mad at the hotel cause of it. Its not our responsibility to call you up and remind you, you either get an email or you better have a good memory.

One thing I like to see when I come in are new comments on the wall. We put up good and bad comments on a board so we can see how well were doing. The great thing is when I see a bad comment, the person that wrote it can't spell and has bad handwriting. If your going to leave a bad comment on how we should do our job, then at least be sophisticated to do so or else it just makes you look like a bad guest. The good comments on the other hand are really appreciated. What I consider a good comment is either no problems or one that has suggestions. With suggestions, people tell us how we should do our job to make everything easier next time, but they do it in such a fashion to where we can understand where their coming from.

So I guess that's all the complaining I can do for this morning! Check back for new blogs!!!

Do you ever get that not-so-calming feeling? Like, you think about how your bills are bigger than yo

Do you ever get that not-so-calming feeling? Like, you think about how your bills are bigger than your paycheck? Or, how your car needs new breaks? Or, how you're at a job you should have already left? Or, you feel guilty because you had pizza instead of veggies for lunch? Or, you just wake up thinking, "What am I doing?"

You know what I'm talking about, right?

Lately, I've been feeling this way a lot. I'm upset over career decisions, my living situation, my lack of income, myself. (Not to mention how I got a flat tire on the way to work).

On the way home, all of these things made me have a little mini breakdown. I know driving is the time you're supposed to be fully focused on, well, driving, but today I was not. I squeezed the steering wheel. Tight, very tight. And I let it go — tears and all.

I just feel like I've lost myself. I feel stuck. I wonder, what happened to the person college professors said would change other peoples' lives with her written words? I wonder, what happened to the responsible girl who, in high school, snuck her parents' tax forms and filled out financial aid paper work and college applications because her parents thought higher education was a waste of time? What happened to the outgoing girl who was always with friends and so, so outgoing it made others envious?

I think a lot has to do with me feeling stuck in this rut. And, it has to do with money. One thing I just don't get is, how do people make it now? Granted, I have student loans, a high credit card, but doesn't almost everyone my age? How do they do it? I have a "good" job, but it doesn't matter. How do people get to be creative but financially stable?

I just don't get it. I really, really, really don't.

What do you think, are you making it?

Credit card fraud in the US is a rising problem. Up to 10% of Americans have been the victim of car

Credit card fraud in the US is a rising problem. Up to 10% of Americans have been the victim of card fraud according to finance website bankrate . com. It's easy to assume from the stories you see in the media that most of this fraud is the result of highly organised gangs using sophisticated techniques but the reality is the risks may be closer to home. Most card fraud cases are one off and may be conducted by someone you know such as family or friends. It's crucial that you take some basic steps to keep your details in the right hands.

The biggest step you can take toward your own credit security is to pay attention. Do you know when your monthly statements arrive? If not, find out. One very common trick is for a thief to change the statement address to something other than your home, and then start charging. If you don't check what's happening in between statements you won't know that things are going on with your account. And if you don't even know when it's supposed to arrive, you're just setting yourself up for trouble. Make sure you look through your statement each time it arrives and call your bank to query anything your not sure about.

Online security is important, too. Never access even a trusted website from a link in an unsolicited e-mail. These can be "mirror" sites set up to look identical to a trusted merchant's, but in reality nothing more than data-mining sites that will take your credit card information and run with it. Go to a website through a Favorite or by typing the website manually into the address bar in your browser.

A secure website will often begin with "https" rather than the standard "http". You'll often see a small icon that looks like a padlock down near the bottom of your browser window though even those can be faked these days. Once you have finished shopping online you should close the internet browser down fully. And consider cleaning out your browsing history on a regular basis. In Windows, this can be done via Tools, then Internet Options. In the General tab, click Delete in the Browsing History section to eliminate the addresses of recently-visited websites.

The golden rule to remember is under no circumstances should you reply to an unsolicited e-mail or phone call that asks for personal information. Banks and other merchants never request this informationremember, they should already have it on hand.

Protect your Personally Identifiable Information, or PII. NEVER give out your Social Security Number to an unsolicited phone call! If someone asks for that information and you didn't call them, hang up immediately.

You should contact your credit card issuer the moment you think you may be a fraud victim. Their number should be on your statement (that you've been checking every month, right?), but it's a good idea to keep it in your address book, Day Planner, or PDA, as well. Your card issue needs to cancel your account with immediate effect and then set you up with a new account with the correct balance. You will likely have some forms to fill out. The information you provide can be critical to help the police and the fraud department of your credit card company locate and prosecute the thief, so be sure to take the time to return the forms.

Keep your card in a safe location (your wallet is generally a bad idea), never give out your PIN number or write it on the card, and check your statements every months. With a few simple precautions you can greatly reduce your risk of becoming a victim of credit card fraud.
