It's been nearly a year since Finnish casual games student/genius Petri Purho brought the amazingly simple experimental game Crayon Physics to the world, and ever since then we've been hungry for more. He reportedly has been working on a more highly-polished version called Crayon Physics Deluxe (see my previous post for more info and video,) but apparently one gentleman (programmer Alejandro Guillen) got a little tired of waiting...

His take on the concept is a little flash game called Magic Pen. It features roughly the same type of gameplay (as well as some of the levels lifted directly from Purho's game,) with a more highly-polished interface, and some of the ideas last spotted in the C.P.D. video brought to fruition (pivots, other shapes, etc.) through over two dozen levels.

It's unclear what the intellectual property ramifications are of these two very similar games being brought into existence. I'm still looking forward to C.P.D., and I hope that our Finnish friend delivers on it SOON. In the meantime, I can't wait to really dig into this game. My wife already has like a 10-level headstart...

*Many thanks go out to the lovely and talented Juannah who brought this to my attention. She has a great blog, which YOU should go check out.

As the week starts its slow crawl to Friday, I thought I'd post another fun flash game diversion. I received alot of e-mail about the last game diversion I posted about, Filler. Everyone loved it, though also complained that they couldn't stop playing it :) Even Bernie DeKoven picked up on the Filler fun. And a return favor to him for finding the Magic Crayon game in a post at his blog.

The image above is a screenshot of the game Magic Crayon. You have to draw shapes and use physics to get the ball to the flag. The game starts easy and slowly ramps up the difficulty. The music is complimentary as well, so you shouldn't have to turn it off.

But this fun post will be a bit different. Think of it as a flash crayon game and a bonus crayon game. Before the Magic Crayon game there was a game called Crayon Physics. I wanted to post about it months ago but it is not a flash online game and you have to download it and then play it. The download is also only for windows operating systems and I know many of the blog readers use Macs. But now I can post about it and have two crayon physics based games so everyone can play at least one of them. The creator is working on Crayon Physics Deluxe these days and it looks very promising.

play the Magic Crayon

download the original Crayon Physics

Bienvenidos a Magic Pen.

Penny Arcade and Vancouver-based developer Hothead Games have unveiled Greenhouse, “a platform agnostic digital distribution portal”. Greenhouse will initially be used to distribute the Penny Arcade adventure game, On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, but PA artist and co-founder Mike “Gabe” Krahulik says that’s just the beginning: “eventually we'd like to use [Greenhouse] as a way of promoting great independent games that might otherwise slide under the radar.”

But with services like Steam and GameTap already in place, why create Greenhouse? Jerry “Tycho” Holkins told Wired that “Greenhouse isn't an application by any means. It's similar to the store we have for posters or shirts or whatever; it just happens to sell videogames instead. So we're not asking somebody to install the Greenhouse client and then keep it updated or whatever.”

The PA front men say that they will act as an editorial board: “The games have to go through us before they get to Greenhouse. Or we submit them to Greenhouse ourselves.” So what kind of games would Gabe and Tycho like to see distributed on Greenhouse?

"The crayon game. Crayon Physics (linked here on O514 since forever! – ed). That's the sort of thing that I would love to put in front of our audience, and say, you guys should play this, definitely. And obviously, we can link it, but to be able to actually distribute it through Greenhouse would be fantastic. It would enable us in a way that would be easy for the developer to get it out there with a royalty structure that is not full of shit. Which I think is a great combination.”

Greenhouse is currently in beta, and you can help stress test it by downloading an uncompressed podcast.

Q: Introduce yourself, however you like.
A: I'm Petri Purho and I'm probably best known for my extremely bad english, without a spell checker. Also I made Crayon Physics.

Q: Is there any significance behind the name “Kloonigames?”
A: Well it's a long story... It started out as a joke between my friends and then I just picked it up. Didn't spend too much time thinking about the name.

Q: Where did the original idea for Crayon Physics come from?
A: It's also a long and a hazy story... I remember thinking about doing a drawing physics game for some time, that idea came from the story Harold and Purple Crayon. But it wasn't until I was working on “Daydreaming at Oval Office” that I figured how you could do the crayon graphics. I mean, realized how to do the algorithm to make the crayon look.

Q: Any chance I could get a demo of Crayon Physics Deluxe to preview? :)
A: It's possible, at least when the game goes to beta. That could be a while :)

Q: Is there a timeframe for the development of Crayon Physics Deluxe, or will it just be done “when it's done?”
A: Well it's in the “when it's done” category, because I can't really schedule crap. A schedule would mean that I had a design of the game that I knew would work. I've noticed that doing a working design before you've tested out what works is impossible.

Q: Are there plans for Linux or Mac versions of Crayon Physics Deluxe?
A: Yeah, there are plans and it's possible that it might happen. But right now I'm concentrating my efforts to getting the PC version done. Problem is that I can't afford to buy a Mac, so I can't test if the game works :)

Q: Do you have any other plans for full games, after Crayon Physics Deluxe is complete?
A: Nothing concrete. I'll estimate the situation after I get Crayon Physics Deluxe done. As you can see I really hate planning :) I'm an impulsive designer.

Q: Do you have a creative process that you go through, for making the ideas for your rapid prototypes?
A: Yeah, it's called deadline & public humiliation. Every once in a while I write some ideas to a notebook, but I usually end up picking some idea that inspires me to work on the prototype. Usually I get most inspired by the most fresh idea. After a while ideas don't just seem so great. Crayon Physics was on one of those not so hot ideas, that I had been playing around for a while. But because I had the deadline I had to do something so I picked up and prototyped the Crayon Physics idea. Good thing I did that.

Q: What advice would you give independent game developers?
A: I'm not sure I'm an authority to give [advice] to anybody. I've only done freeware games. But I would say that prototype a load of ideas and don't cling to any game idea until you've tested them out.

Q: What advice or comments would you give to the general game industry today?
A: They could cut out a very small chunk out of their budgets and give that to some indie to do a game. Nobody would notice anything. That way they could create two games at the price of one!

Q: What questions do you always wish interviewers would ask, and never do? How would you answer them?
A: "Could you do a game about the wonderful world of jelly beans?" and I'd answer, "Of course." Also the second most favorite question is, "Would you a like a million dollars to develop Crayon Physics Deluxe?"

Q: Well, seeing as I already know about your affinity for jelly beans, would you like a million dollars to develop Crayon Physics Deluxe?
A: No, I'm so indie that I'd rather starve to death than accept your dirty corporate money. (But if you're serious, then the answer is yes of course)

Q: Last remarks.
A: Can't really think of anything. I'm a dull person, I don't have last remarks.

Thank you for your time. Best of luck with Crayon Physics Deluxe!
Thanks.

Crayon Physics - é simples, inteligentem criativo... e viciante.

Particularly since Petri Purho posted this on his Kloonigames blog, I've been anxious to see how it turns out. It has quite a bit of promise, in my opinion, and it's great to see it doing well at IGF. World of Goo looks to have a great, silly fun in it, loaded with creativity. Hopefully both of these games will do well when the winners are announced.

This is a game that was mentioned on the ScrewAttack.com forum. It lets you draw shapes with your mouse which then behave like real-world objects. You can get it from this page (click), or you can direct download it here (click).

There is no installer. Just unzip the folder to pretty much anywhere (your desktop works great,) and double click on the "crayon" file in the folder to play.

This video shows the next step that the software will take: Crayon Physics Deluxe.

http://www.kloonigames.com/download.php?file=crayon.zip

No. ¿La bandera americana? Tampoco. Podeis buscarlo.

I really like this game, and it makes you think of the possibilities. It's like Armadillo Run in many ways, especially the premise of getting a ball to its target while using physics gizmos. The game supports quadrilaterals and circles, from what I've made of it. No walking squiggles is a disappointment. :(

Still, it needs quite a bit of brain to use and is fun. I particularly liked the crayon and paper graphics, which make it look like the real deal. This is one game you ought to try.

Episode 0.1 has arrived! Still in pre-alpha stage, ScoutaTV is still ironing out bugs (not that there are any...) but hopes to be releasing episode 1 in the next 10 months or so...

This fornight Grum, Rich and Say discuss Cloverfield, a 2008 monster movie produced by J. J. Abrams (of Alias fame) promoted in the same "viral-esque"way as Halo did with it's ilovebees campaign. Next topic of discussion was Google Android, Google's latest project aimed at dominating the mobile phone market and getting Web CEOs on camera showing off their sexy legs. Crayon Physics Deluxe is discussed next, with grum comparing it's playability to Line Rider and EchoChrome. Richard goes into a rant about how cool Battlestar is and grum returns the TV geekery with his love for Lost. The writers of such TV shows like The Daily Show are currently striking, prompting a large handful of TV shows to be delayed in America and forcing people to seek alternative forms of TV entertainment such as diggnation and TikiBarTV, two massively popular podcasts.

Lala from TikibarTV has just released a new calendar which grum will be purcahsing to add to his already extensive collection of his Lala shirt and TikibarTV pint glasses, available at the TikiBarTV online store. Grum also touches on the Royal League of Bunnies, a drinking game brought to life on one of the TikiBarTV episodes. The team then goes on about web-procused TV serials such as Italian Spiderman, produced by the Aussie group "Alrugo Entertainment" and the various clips by the Smosh boys.

We also chat about fake "how-to" guides which tell the viewer how to do certain things like charge an ipod with common household items, open car doors with tennis balls and how to fix a CD with a microwave. Rich chats about a video he caught on a recent TEDTalk which features Jesus' second coming and fianlly we end the show with a chat about one of our own viewer's prank call website "Scamtoons".

The boys finalise the show by chatting about Anina's post in the Facebook Group and ChrisPirillo's shirtless advertising.

I just came across this really interesting game (still in ‘beta’) called crayon physics

I just came across this really interesting game (still in 'beta') called crayon physics and what it does is that it allows you to draw 2D images and see how they would behave if they were subjected to physics (or in this case gravity)

Basically you have a ball and stars. You are suppose to make the ball touch the stars by drawing shapes with ur crayon cursor so that the ball rolls towards the star without dropping down.

It's really quite fun and you can download other levels when you become bored of the basic 4 levels found in the game.

The only thing I don't like about it (for now) is the fact that you can't draw much beyond rectangles and well... rectangles. The newer version (purported to come soon) looks really promising. Seems like you can draw all kinds of shapes and even cars. Fun stuff!

To play, download the game here

For more physics gaming delights, try:

Line rider

For other experimental games, try:

Experimental Gameplay Project

I have yet to play the games found in the latter website yet, I sure will do so really soon! Meanwhile, I can't wait for the Crayon Physics Deluxe game to be finished!

Isn’t this game incredibly cool, check the video below. Looks like you really need to know you

Isn't this game incredibly cool, check the video below. Looks like you really need to know your physics well to play this one :) This one is from Kloonigames and runs on the tablet PC. A PC version of crayon physics is coming soon.

The user experience on this is incredible, watch how the game reacts as the user draws different figures and tries to achieve their objective. With the Wii and PS3 giving PC games a run for their money, I think innovative concepts like this one are a really good answer.

This makes me wonder about the process of gathering requirements for this game. I'm thinking, there are so many scenarios that need to be captured and then taking a call on which ones the game needs to support and deciding others to be left out. Phew ! It's actually my dream to do requirements, scenarios and functional specifications for a gaming product. Wouldn't that be cool :)
