A few months ago, I finally sent a fan letter to Steely Dan. I haven't received a response, nor do I expect to, but that's not what the letter was about.

It was about actually doing things that you have the impulse to do, and following through. It's a new path I'm trying to accomplish, since so many things have been on the back burner for years, I'm actually attempting to clear some of those projects out and make them a reality. Since the volume can be a little overwhelming at times, I'm going to start small.

Some background - on a trip out to LA, my wife and I visited with Scott and Al and Scott from the band 'Pop Machine'. We hit the recording studio and the local hangouts and one of the conversations we had was about Steely Dan. I somehow got a copy of some sheet music for Aja, and in the forward, it mentioned how Steely Dan got their classic 'sound'. They decided to write their songs in only one key, and an odd one at that. Dm7.

If you ever pull up a guitar and try that scale, you can see it's melodic, but it's a different progression that you're used to - and has a unique sound you can't quite place, but you know it when you hear it. That's how you can tell a Becker/Fagan song, even if they're solo or together.

So - I bring up that fact, and it gets Al's mind thinking. What's the one song that Steely Dan would never do, and then arrange the song as if they had written it. He settled on 'Louie, Louie'.

Al took the riff from 'Do it again', and tweaked it with an island flair. Then they put the tune on one of their compilation cassettes sent out to friends of Pop Machine, and it sat in an archive for 16 years.

Fast Forward to 2008 - I connected with Al after a decade or so of occasional e-mails this spring, and stumbled upon his archive music project 'The 365 Music Project' - quite the accomplishment. I came across the song, and always wondered how the guys from Steely Dan would react when they heard it, but forgot about it. So I decided to try and find out. 

Using our pal the internet, I tracked down their web site, and I think I've send them this letter. I have no idea if they've actually read it, but it'd be cool to find out the rest of the story....

Recently, I got the honour of interviewing this highly talented band from Austria, about their dreams and passion; hope you enjoy the read.

(Note- two questions were combined)

MG: How did the name Dust Covered Carpet come about?

DCC: Most of the songs were written and recorded by Volker on the carpet in his flat in Vienna. It is very dusty.

MG: When was your band formed?

DCC: The band as it is now, was founded in April 2007, but the whole project was started in 2003 with solo recordings and gigs and also with an ever changing army of background musicians, friends and family.

MG: What is everyone’s band position?

DCC: As of now Volker does the songwriting, composition and live he plays the guitar, mouth harp and sings. Julia is our violinist, and also does the glockenspiel, melodica and flutes. Katharina joins in with accordion, clarinet and transverse flute. Armin is our drummer and second guitar player. And last but very not least Magdalena plays the cello or flutes, though we are all very flexible with the order of using the instruments. Everyone sings background vocals, does percussions, whistles, stomps their feet, etc.

MG: How did you all the band members meet?

DCC: Volker and Armin are brothers, everyone else was found on the way.

MG: Have you guys played any shows?

DCC: Sure! Tons. But only close to home so far…

MG: What do you want your fans to get from your music?

DCC: We would like them to learn to listen closely and recognize the worth of little things (in life and music), and to realize the importance of feelings.

MG: How would you describe your music?

DCC: It is rather hard to describe but it could be called, melodic- dramatic- harmonic folk pop.

MG: In today’s music, who inspires you the most?

DCC: No one in particular, but the band tends to listen to all sorts of music from Indie Rock to old folk songs, musicals, experimental music in general, local bands and bands from our label (Beat Is Murder Records).

MG: What is the driving force and main storyline behind your music?

DCC: Everyday experiences, dreams, fears, love, boredom and friendship.

MG: On the band’s site, it is stated that the band’s line-up constantly changes; can you explain the purpose of the spontaneous changing?

DCC: As we stated before, the band has been going through some construction work with all the people that have been involved in the whole process of Volker's songwriting, composing and live performances. We are always open towards new ideas and people with a hand for any other instrument that has not yet been included in the band.

MG: What is your ultimate direction for your band?

DCC: Phew. Lots of things, but nothing to far in the future. Right now we are concentrating on playing more live shows but there are several plans for new releases in the nearer future. Soon we will bomb the record stores with a split 7'' vinyl with Liger and the next album is planned to come out in mid 2009. Also we have just purchased a band bus and need to spread our music by selling our recent album “Rerededust The Doubts I Trust” everywhere, and play more and more and bigger and bigger and bigger shows.

DCC: We had fun doing this interview.

MG: Thank you for the opportunity of letting me interview you all, it was fun indeed and the best of luck to you on your musical journey.

I have personally experienced paintballing where friends have given themselves dead legs and allies have dislocated their shoulders on obstacles. But i have never observed a direct headshot which has done this amount of damage and was obviously hillarious to on lookers.

They haven't been bound correctly, they've not got the correct cover, but they are here...

It wasn't easy handing them out. Apart from myself, and The Bear (and he has never read it in one go, or in the right order) it'll be the first time it has ever been read. Which is quite, quite, nerve racking.

So far I've handed out four copies. To; an experienced proof reader, a fantasticly honest genius, a comic guru, and the legend that is The Bear.

Of course, there are those factors that determine the way we make our beds such as the weather and the fact that some us of sleep in pajamas.

Interestingly, bed making is an infamous although unspoken house chore that every other sleeper silently wishes it be automated, especially for those who enjoy the double, queen and king sizes. Is it because some are lazy or there is not a perfect time for the chore.

Some people take some time to be fully awake and making the bed is not a priority task during that time while on the other hand, others do not see the point of making the bed when they turn in for the night because in the morning its gonna be a mess again. You have your own reasons for not making the bed ;)

So, while pondering on this issue I discovered a simple tactic of bed making (EUREKA!); I bought a couple of bed sheets that have a rubber band around the corners and can be tucked in and firmly attached to the mattress, and since the weather was favorable, all I needed was a single cover to make a qualitative experiment on my theory: kick the bed straight.

As long as the beddings are clean, all you need to do is enjoy your night's sleep and not care about bed making in the morning. Moreover you don't have to worry about waking up late and leaving in a hurry or taking too much time to be fully awake; caz the bed making comes later when you turn in. The procedure is precise and easy to follow, when you turn in;

• hold the upper end of the cover with your hand
• kick the lower end of the cover to straighten it up
• (NB: the bed sheet described is capable of  withstanding a couple of nights' sleep without coming off )

(Mission accomplished). This experiment is safe and can be done at home.

sento già dire qualcuno che "non è che che se ascolti buona musica sei un buon musicista" (sento anche un accento un po' calante) ma questa versione non è affatto male.

e poi pensare a quel disco, southern accents, è strano perchè lo ricordo come un macigno incomprensibile che non ho mai digerito del tutto. tutta colpa della produzione di dave stewart troppo fuori tiro per canzoni che rimangono bellissime. la title track è uno di quegli esempi che operano violente selezioni tra cantautori di serie a e gli altri. su un commento di youtube scrivono che johnny cash avrebbe detto che il brano dovrebbe sostituire dixie (l'inno del sud durante la guerra civile). non ho idea se sia vero ma in ogni caso l'ha incisa nel secondo degli american recordings: Unchainded, proprio quello in cui fa da backing band tompettyandtheheartbreakers.

credo che riascolterò almeno una volta i vampire weekend con attenzione e poi andrò a riesumare la cassettina originale di southern accents comprata bucata (la spiegazione magari ad un altro post) sul catalogo top ten a 4900 lire per poi scaricare con tutti i diritti il disco in questione e cercare di capirlo. (come avete capito sono tante le cose che non capisco e questo è un post circolare)
