Hi All! So my mom's birthday is coming up soon and I'm not sure what to get her. I was thinking of this hand-stamped flower necklace? It can be stamped with 4 characters so I was thinking of putting the baby's name on it. My mom is still swooning over the fact that she's a grandma now so this idea would be perfect. Plus, she does like jewelry and she's really big into keeping keepsakes for gifts when she gets older.

I like the flower necklace, but they also have a copper butterfly and heart design as well :)

Just a cute idea that I found and thought I would share :)

My parents are hosting some guests back in Denver, and Copper thought he'd welcome said guests by treating them just how he treats us. First, he stole the man's slippers (and my mom couldn't find them in any of Copper's usual hiding spots). Then, he ate AN ENTIRE BOX of Viactiv chocolate calcium tablets that the woman brought with her. Nice, Copper.

My mom tried to research whether this meant Copper would suddenly have a heart attack, but her computer wasn't working. So far, he's still alive. Probably gleefully chomping on his new slippers as a nightcap.

After a couple of weeks of not making any jewelry, I had a fairly productive weekend and made some n

After a couple of weeks of not making any jewelry, I had a fairly productive weekend and made some new pieces and tried out some new techniques. They didn't work out perfectly, but I'm quite pleased with these items.

A few weeks ago, I found an image I had saved of a pendant that was framed with sterling silver. I thought that would make really cute earrings. So I gave it a try, only to discover the technique is trickier than I was expecting. I was making some earrings with black labradorite, but to fix a mistake I made with the first earring, I cut the silver too short. Not wanting to waste sterling, I made this pair with some pink shell.

[caption id="attachment_60" align="alignnone" width="240" caption="Pink shell earrings, with hammered sterling silver frame"][/caption]

Here is the second pair I made, this time using the black labradorite (aka larvikite). The stones are really pretty, they have wonderful blue flashes in them.

[caption id="attachment_57" align="alignnone" width="210" caption="Black labradorite earrings, framed with sterling silver"][/caption]

I also finished a pair of earrings that I had started back in July. I had some large sterling silver links that I had soldered and hammered with plans for these earrings. I finally finished them last night. The briolettes are chalcedony and they are wrapped with very fine sterling silver wire.

[caption id="attachment_58" align="alignnone" width="240" caption="Chalcedony and sterling earrings"][/caption]

And finally, a bracelet. I was inspired by some earrings I saw in a book on cold connections. I thought it would be cute as a bracelet and decided to try with copper.

[caption id="attachment_59" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Aventurine and copper bracelet"][/caption]

Copper is a great practice material as it is much less expensive to buy than sterling silver and so if I make mistakes, that's fine. It's an opportunity to try out new techniques without the stress of wasting material. Plus I really like the look of copper and I wear copper pieces, not just silver ones. It was a good thing I tried it out in copper first, because I made five links, three for the bracelet and I was going to use two for a pair of earrings. I was unhappy with how two of the copper links turned out, so I didn't make the earrings. But I had three that I was able to use for the bracelet. And I think that I learned a lot about punching holes in the right place and making sure to saw lines at a right angle.

The beads are green aventurine and a fabulous colour in person. But unfortunately the bracelet is too large for my wrist (it's a 7" bracelet), so this item won't be for me. I'll put it for sale on my web-store. But I already have plans to make one with oval hammered links of copper with some nice amazonite beads I have. I will make sure this one is small enough to fit me (I'll make smaller links).

Working with metal is so much fun. I've been working with wire for about a year and a half now and I love how wire can be transformed into so many cool things. I started working with sheet metal in May, and now I feel as though the world of jewelry-making has expanded so much... Learning to saw sheet was one of the most valuable things I have done. So many shapes can be made, and used in so many different ways. And I can solder too, which seems to make the possibilities endless... It's so exciting!

Except gold futures, crude oil, silver and copper futures on the national bourses turned higher on week ended on Friday mainly following the firm trend in the overseas markets. Gold futures on MCX finally settled marginally higher following strong crude oil prices.

Crude oil spot in the US stayed below $120 per barrel on Friday. The bulls came back with a vengeance in the oil market in the last week, as crude oil prices closed above $121 a barrel on Thursday for the first time in two weeks. While the London gold spot was quoted at $825 per ounce.
Snippet & Ink created this gorgeous pink and copper inspiration board. It's really the colors and feeling I want for our wedding and I see a lot of what I've already chosen reflected in these images. I love the idea of the old metal watering cans/jars used as flower vases. I might have to mix in a few of those with my mason jars. I think they'd go well together.

We love mixed metals. I mean, love them. There's just something about how sterling silver pops when it is up against copper, and how brass shows off its lovely warmth when mixed with silver.

The three together make a lovely trio, as seen in this new bracelet made by Crystal ("Daughter Belle"). Sterling silver, copper, and red brass was made into hudreds of tiny rings, all methodically woven into the ancient "Jens Pind" chainmaille weave. Harmony. Love! It's finished off with a sterling silver clasp with a little copper accent.

This bracelet is mine *grin*, but I'd be happy to make one just for you! Let me know what you think. :o) For more mixed metal jewelry, please visit us at 2 Belles & a Bead.

Is The Recession Here Yet?

Real GDP increased at an annual rate of 1.9% in the second quarter. The increase went beyond persona

Real GDP increased at an annual rate of 1.9% in the second quarter. The increase went beyond personal consumption expenditures to include exports, non-residential structures, and federal, state and local government spending. Exports were a standout contributor, rising 9.2%, accelerating from 5.1% in the first quarter. Maybe a weak dollar isn’t all bad. Here’s something we don’t hear a lot about. Real final sales of domestic product (GDP less change in private inventories) grew 3.9%, up from 0.9% in the first quarter. Looks like growth to me.

What’s this from the Wall Street Journal? “The U.S. economy was the best performing of the G7, growing 0.5%. Indeed, of the 1.9% year-to-year increase in economic output recorded by OECD members in the second quarter, the U.S. accounted for 0.6 percentage point. The euro zone continued at 0.4 percentage point and Japan at just 0.1 percentage point.” Well that’s a switch from earlier expectations.

And then I came across this from an article in SmartMoney by Donald Luskin dated August 8th: “I’ve just spent two days with friends and family in Disneyland, "The happiest place on Earth." Based on what I've seen, it ought to be called "the most crowded place on Earth." It was mobbed. Packed beyond capacity.” These families are still taking vacations despite the high cost of gasoline.

The AP reported on August 18th that, “Chile's Central Banks says the nation's copper sales surged 8.8 percent in the first seven months of the year over the same year-ago period. The South American nation is the world's largest copper producer.” State-run Coldelco and BHP Billiton are the country's largest copper producers. BHP Billiton reported record copper production for the year ended June 30, 2008. The demand for this economically sensitive metal at high prices would seem to support a global economy that’s growing.

Housing starts in July came in at an annual rate of 965,000, 11.0% below June and 29.6% below July 2007. July’s pace was the lowest since March 1991. Consider that a low level of housing start activity is what is needed to work off existing inventory to get to a level where healthy growth can begin. Admittedly only one smaller city, The Tucson Board of Realtors Listing Service reported that the inventory of home listings in July dropped below 8,000 for the first time since March 2008, and new listings are down nearly 20.0%.

If magazine covers are contrary indicators, as some believe, the worst may be over for the financial services industry. Meredith Whitney, a bank analyst at Oppenheimer & Co., is on the cover of the August 18th issue of Fortune. The cover reads, “Bank analyst Meredith Whitney called the credit meltdown a year ago. Her forecast now: more pain on the way.” The author describes her as “the most influential stock analyst in America. And certainly the most bearish.”

Don’t get me wrong. I fully appreciate the serious issues facing the real estate and financial services industries. And the economy may fall into a recession, or it may not. But for now, sentiment appears to be too dour versus reality.

Steampunk desk lamp - 'The Optimus'

Anyone that knows me well will be aware of my copper pipe lighting creations. . . For ages now I

Anyone that knows me well will be aware of my copper pipe lighting creations. . . For ages now I've been working on developing a range of one-off/bespoke steampunk-styled creations from scrap copper plumbing, bits of brass and sundry found items. Finally, after a long time of refining my technique, sourcing just the right power supplies, bulbs and fittings, and finding what I hope is an original 'voice' in the field, I'm ready to release them onto the world!

As an introduction, here's my latest piece. Smaller than most of my creations (which tend to be large floor-standing works) this neat little work lamp is named The Optimus, after the Swedish-made brass stove that forms the base of the lamp. I'm really pleased with the general look/feel, the proportions of brass to copper elements (some of my earlier pieces maybe had a bit to much copper and not enough brass to suit a steampunk purist) and the elegant touches that the stove base brings to the work (including folding brass legs, the moving pump assembly, various screw caps etc).

[caption id="attachment_193" align="alignnone" width="216" caption="The Optimus steampunk desk lamp"][/caption]

The bulb shown in the picture is a large 50W halogen, but this can be replaced with a smaller 20W bulb if required. The telephone (a fantastic photographic prop owned by the StockdaleMartin agency) was just put there as an indication of scale, but actually complements the piece really well.

I may add a few bits to the piece before it goes on show/sale - the brass fitting half way up and a triad of crevices around the base are just crying out for some additional doohickeys!

As I mentioned at the beginning, this is the precursor to my new range, and I'm working on the website to display/sell them as we speak (naturally I'll post the full details up here when it's ready to launch). As always, I'd love to hear what anyone out there thinks, so please feel free to drop me some comments. . .

Well he didn't exactly eat something...yet. A while back, I wrote a post about doggy Prozac and other such things, and in the post I mentioned that my beloved nutso dog Copper would probably be a candidate for some sort of anxiety pill. My mom took him to the vet the other day, and turns out, HE IS. The vet wants to put him on doggy Prozac, but naturally my anti-pill father won't allow it. My conversation with my mom went a little like this:

Me: Prozac?! No! Didn't you read my scathing post about doggy drugs?

Mom: Uh, no...

Me: Well, I don't think Copper should go on drugs. It might make him...boring!

Mom: You're on Prozac; are you boring?

Me: Point taken.

Mom: Think of it, he could be a new man!

Ugh. I really hope my dog doesn't have to go on anti-anxiety medicine, but I'll keep you posted.
