Collaboration is the big buzzword of the year. Goolgle, that is trying to invest time and efforts on anything that has "potential", is trying once again (after Google Docs) to tap that market.

They just released Google Knol which is a mix of collaborative authoring and community. The community aspect allows for search for specific subjects (or authors) and rating of the content. The UI is very simple (like most things Google) and discplays related content and a short author profile, for example. Users can rate, comment, email and print articles. A revision list is another interesting feature, all very well organized spatially within the User Interface.

Interesting move... and again, the question: how can we use this for learning situations? The answer seems obvious...

Christie Brinkley’s divorce from 4th husband Peter Cook got salacious and nasty, with revelations

Christie Brinkley’s divorce from 4th husband Peter Cook got salacious and nasty, with revelations that his use of internet porn got completely out of hand. I guess most men would wonder why anybody married to an internationally renowned beauty like Brinkley would even want to indulge in the old one-handed mouse movement game. And the answer is, of course, he couldn’t stop himself. Somehow, the thrill of internet porn over-whelmed the reality of being married to one of the world’s most beautiful women.

For someone like myself, who has made a living in adult entertainment, it’s probably unusual to question an addiction to pornography – in fact, the conventional wisdom amongst pornographers is that if you can “get ‘em hooked” you’ll continue to make money. But putting yourself into the position of a “pusher” dealing in an addictive substance is not my idea of good business or good sense. Firstly, to prey on human weakness is vile and unrewarding. Secondly, to ‘use’ addiction as the means by which you sell your product results in one thing only. The seller’s contempt of the buyer.

When you think about how addiction works (leaving aside chemical and psychological issues), most addiction occurs when the initial ‘high’ cannot be replicated without larger or more frequent doses. This is where the argument that exposure to soft core pornography inevitably leads to hard core arises, just as marijuana is seen as a ‘gateway’ to heroin. My response has always been that the vast majority of pornography (and let’s call it that rather than using the euphemism of “adult entertainment”) does not satisfy. And when content doesn’t satisfy, the user keeps searching. Given that the average internet sex addict spends a minimum of 10 hours a week surfing adult content, it seems to me that there’s a lot of folks out there relentlessly looking for, and failing to find, material that satisfies.

The critics will say that pornography can never satisfy a sexual need. I can’t agree with that. Human sexual nature develops in ways that are unique to individuals. Early life circumstances, events and imprinting incidences contain the seeds of how an individual’s sexual characteristics are developed and refined. It is entirely wrong to say, for instance, that someone’s fascination with a particular style of shoe cannot be part of a healthy, “normal” sexuality. It would also be incorrect to state that in the absence of the shoe, an image of the shoe would not bring some degree of satisfaction. Even male parrots become aroused at a two-dimensional representation of a female parrot. The human brain is capable of much more than a parrot’s. Well – in most cases.

The quick Carl La Fong solution to internet sex addiction? Better content. More focused content. And above all, educating the viewer into realizing that some content providers have contempt for them and their “interests”. It’s an easy enough thing to spot, once you know what to look for. Or once you’ve seen content that truly respects your interest.

And just so my critics won’t think I’m entirely without morals, I’d urge everyone who feels that they might have an internet sex addiction to get some help. Not getting help is tending to result in a lot of divorces and more than a few job dismissals. And for those of you in a Relationship, the message from the Carl La Fong Advice desk is; You Must Tell Your Partner. I know that sounds scary so I’ll let you roll that one around for a while and we’ll come back to this topic in more detail when you’ve had some time to consider that idea.

Following on from Benn’s post about “Coke’s Trans-media Storytelling” (trans-media storytelling being the most unlikely buzz-word), it seems more brands are becoming “content creators” in a bid to drive sales. As reported in Monday’s Media Guardian, Island Def Jam Music Group (IDJ) and Procter & Gamble’s TAG brand have recently formed a new hip-hop record label, TAG Records.

At this point, the cynics amongst you may be rolling their eyes. As praneeth points outs quite succinctly on his blog, to be a successful label the focus must be on the music, not on P&G products; but this won’t be possible because the purpose of the music label is to promote P&G products. Taking a quick search on Google suggests that reaction to the label isn’t overwhelmingly positive! Comments on the daily swarm include the witty “this stinks” (TAG is a deodorant brand) as well as the more thoughtful “Be somebody, sell out”. Brilliantly the comments also include such gems as:

“HI MR. DUPREE, I,M CALVIN, WITH 4 ARTISTS, THAT ARE INDUSRTY READY.. I HAVE 3 FEMALES, AND 1 MALE RIGHT NOW'
CONTACT CALVIN SCHEXNAYDER, 559 276 1737”

Whether or not Mr Dupree is listening is another matter.

TAG Records has recently announced its first signing, the Brooklyn rapper “Q”. It will be interesting to see how the label progresses and if the venture is successful. I doubt that most of the audience will really care what label an artist is signed to if they are sufficiently talented. In addition with the financial muscle of P&G on board we should be hearing a lot more about Q in the future.

It’s worth having a quick look at the TAG Records website if you’ve got a spare 2 minutes; the “TAG” section is worth it alone! “When it comes to the hustle, if one piece isn’t right it could all fall apart. So whatever you’re doing out there, make sure you keep it fresh. After all, when you smell good, you fell good and when you feel good, you too can Make History.

I’m now keenly awaiting for the release of “You really need to buy some TAG if you’re going to be cool”.

As I embark on this blog, I’m getting a sense of the importance of having real content as the

As I embark on this blog, I'm getting a sense of the importance of having real content as the basis for a post. There is simply no way to spout off in a vacuum without the raw information and news from which to pontificate.

As much as some bloggers like to criticize the MSM, traditional media or whatever you want to call it, they would have nothing to talk about if there was no news out there being reported by journalists. I'm not saying that no bloggers are real journalists. I've never been wedded to the idea that journalists need some kind of special credential. It was pounded into me from long ago that journalism is not a profession like doctor or lawyer, but simply a trade. I didn't go to journalism school, I just learned by doing at college papers and internships.

But there is a need for people dedicated to objectively seeking out facts and sharing that information widely. We need people who hold governments accountable by poring over public records and challenging officials. Someone has to travel to war zones and disasters to chronicle how lives are affected and give a voice to victims who need help. Keen observers must cut through corporate doublespeak and look at the numbers, and check if the latest cool gizmo actually does what it's supposed to. Those people have been called journalists, no matter what medium they use to transmit their information. And they will always be needed to provide the raw stuff on which society functions.

Okay, this is a post that may well be a bit controversial. I would like to start out by asking that

Okay, this is a post that may well be a bit controversial. I would like to start out by asking that no matter what your opinion of homosexuality or gender reassignment surgery may be to read on until the end. (How is that for a first paragraph? Curious yet? You should be!)

Robert Hanks of The Independent UK brings us the tale of a shocking radio show, and the reflections on radio's importance that go with it:

Across the nation, throughout Between Ourselves (BBC Radio 4, Thursday), you could hear the gentle thud of jaws dropping to the floor. In the first of a new run, the common experience uniting Olivia O'Leary's guests was that they were married to people who underwent a change of sex, and the marriage had survived the alteration: Daphne's husband was now a woman; Chris's wife a man.

Sounds like an episode of Jerry Springer, doesn't it? At least that sort of theatrical approach is what comes to mind to many Americans. Despite subject matter that some might consider lurid, this show managed to rise above the baser impulses, and in doing so illustrated one of the primary strengths of radio:

Daphne had adjusted to a new life, though she admitted to pining for the old one; and Penny was happier now, easier to live with. Dru, on the other hand, was more difficult, and Chris's misery was clear. Yet both agreed that the change had been the right thing, as had staying together: love made it worthwhile.

The arrival at that tender conclusion was the most astonishing thing, a tribute to Chris's and Daphne's generosity, and to O'Leary's unprurient questioning. It was also a tribute to radio, which can, by making you part of a conversation rather than a voyeur, treat such material with a subtlety beyond TV's range.

I have said it before and I will say it again. At its best, radio bring a combination of personality, character, and community to its listeners. A sense of involvement that is, as Hanks says above, conversational. The personal touch is important. It is also what allows sustained and serious dialogue beyond the reach of TV, at least when used well.

Content is King, but Conversation shares the throne.Radio 2020 › Edit — WordPress

Reader Friendly Content: At all costs keep your content – articles, poems, photographs, videos –

Reader Friendly Content: At all costs keep your content – articles, poems, photographs, videos – reader friendly, that is to say, it should keep more and more readers interested. Your reader must be at the center of you post in a way that your reader must feel that he is gaining something out of reading your post. This is the basic rule in marketing.

Worthwhile: Never let the reader feel that he has been tricked into reading your post or clicking on your blog link. You are thwarting all your long term chances of that reader coming back to your blog, in which case your blog rankings over the long term are in a dicey position.

Check for errors: Making grammatical and spelling errors can be a major put off for many readers. They may not visit your blog again simply because the errors that you make are too high. Always proof read your blog. A small typo here and there can be understood, but make sure you don’t make any major errors.

KISS: Or, Keep It Short and Simple. This is the thumb rule you must follow at all point. Long winding posts tend to get boring. And it may contain nothing that is interesting to the reader. Also no one has the time enough for your blog, no matter how well you write. In fact, your blog will be much more appreciated if you put your thoughts simply and shortly.

Interesting: Make sure that you hold your reader’s attention by making your posts snazzy. They must not be written in a tone that is tiring to read. Write short sentences and keep then crisp and precise. Always hit the point immediately in the course of your article.

Link: Keep linking the blogs you read to yours in order to build a network those people will be in turn encouraged to link you. Remember, linking increases rankings.

Keywords: Using the keywords of your posts frequently increases the search ability of that particular article of yours which in turn leads more people to visit your blog.

Clear Thoughts: Make sure you put your thought clearly before the readers so that it does not become tedious for them to read.

Colloquialism: You can write in a friendly tone. Avoid using too many slang words, but otherwise, if your post demands it, you can be colloquial.

Post Title: A catchy post title or headline is half your business solved. It can glue a reader to your post almost immediately. However, do not put misleading post titles, or you will lose creditability.

So, be consistent with your blog content and watch traffic flowing in to your blog!

God's been encouraging me today and the up-tightness of yesterday is clearing up. An afternoon nap contributed some but the main cure was found through a timely reminder in Psalm 90 that thankfulness is the cure for anxiety and discontent. Thinking over all that I have to be thankful is overwhelming in a good sort of way. I heard this song this afternoon as I was cooking dinner on Pandora Radio and it just struck me how much I need Jesus to inhabit every area of my life. I need His attitude in exchange for mine.

What do you have to do? Lots of sucky shiz. You have to sit there all day long building links while it seems like nothing is changing. You create a link here, a link there. You create page after page of content for your business...

Does your traffic increase in the first week? No...

Does it increase in the first month? Maybe slightly...

So you continue to put in hour after hour into SEO projects that may or may not pay off. You use existing technology to identify methods you can do to move up in the rankings.

Another reskin. This time with a benchmark. A benchmark is an existing site or design which the client or the design team can provide as a goal. This time it was http://www.375services.com/ ...which John and I weren't sure why. This website accomplishes the goal of cramming as much information links as possible on the home page, but it has no class. So, John passed along another site to reference an organized and more classy way to show lots of information on a homepage (http://www.yahoo.com/). So, I used Yahoo's tabs method and created the following:

[gallery]

I have many more sub pages completed, but it was pointless to make all of them when one or two would suffice. Also made in Photoshop CS2. These designs (and development thereof) reflect my reactions to John's advice, the benchmark, and a growing understanding of web design.

This client also has had the design we proposed for a long time. They have since updated their logo (seen on current website: http://www.whitemanservices.com/ ), but have not replied back on my design or if they even really want to do a reskin. "good things take time"

The Streets of Bournemouth

This is the first blog post about our project “The Streets of Bournemouth”. We thought it would be useful to give an insight as to what the project is and what it entails:

What is this “Streets of Bournemouth” project you’re talking about?

The Streets of Bournemouth is a £440,000 lottery funded project aiming to build a virtual “museum”, which will map out the history of the town of Bournemouth. This virtual “museum” will be an interactive experience that will be available online. It will feature a collection of maps, images and information to show how the town has changed over the past 200 years.

As a user, how can I be involved?

“The community archive” will allow you to contribute and add your own photo’s, collections, stories and memories to the website, as well as allowing you to interact with other users.

So what else will it feature?

For this project, we will be conserving a unique collection of Victorian glass negatives. “The Day Collection” is a photographic record of the first expansion of Bournemouth; owing to its fragile condition it is not available to the public. Conservation and digitisation of the collection will enable it to be included on the website for all to enjoy.

When will it be ready?

The project will go live in April 2010 (in time for Bournemouth’s bicentenary).
