Mr Gordon Brown’s recent speech was about climate change and as you would expect he tried to put a very positive emphasis on the government’s climate change policy. It is worth looking at the speech in detail so that we can fully measure the government’s climate change policy against a proper yardstick. I shall give you my views of yardsticks later in this post, but first let us look at the policy initiatives which Mr Brown claims are the right initiatives to solve climate change:-.

The Green Hotline

Mr Brown announced a Green Hotline to advise people about carbon savings and efficiency. This was first reported to my knowledge (it may have been reported earlier) on 18th November 2007. I wrote about it in posts of 19th November 2007, 20th November 2007 and 21st February 2008. I am not impressed with the concept of a “Green Hotline”. It will waste money better spent on measures.

Plastic Bags

Mr Brown “seeks” to end the use of plastic bags in supermarkets and shops. This is quite an old chestnut. I wrote about this on 14th and 19th November 2007, 1st, 13th and 24th March 2008 3rs April 2008 and 5th May 2008. This is not a policy but simply a talking point and I shall not be surprised if we are still talking about it in a year from now. Mr Brown will convene a forum of supermarkets to discuss plastic bags. Now we know who runs our country’s plastic bag policy.

Targets

Mr Brown said the UK's emission target of a 60% cut by 2050 could be increased to 80%. I have written many posts about targets; if you want to read them all just put “targets” in the search engine on the post. You can have all the targets that you want – they are easy to devise and hard to fulfil. Measures, not targets, will make a difference to climate change.

We have had a statutory “fuel poverty” target for many years, and we have failed to achieve the target. What remedy is available for the fuel poor? A judicial review! Probably embarrassing for the government but hardly something that a fuel poor person can use to fight off the cold.

Energy Efficiency

There will be more help – but it has already been announced. Energy efficiency is virtually the government’s sole carbon reduction policy for homes which account for around a quarter of the UK’s emissions. In this context the policy means loft and cavity wall insulation which saves energy and are important but should not be the sole tool of a home energy policy.

The UK a World Leader in building a low carbon economy

This was probably the best joke in the whole speech. Genersys has businesses in many countries and I have knowledge of the policies affecting our product – solar thermal technology around the world. In my view the UK government has the least support, the least confidence and the greatest hostility to using free benign light to provide heat. At the moment we do lead the world in one thing connected with climate change – consultations.

Tough decisions

Once again the Government talked about making tough decisions; these are the tough decisions that they have made – a Green Hotline, perhaps no more plastic bags if the supermarkets agree, targets which are unenforceable and home insulation. My posts of 19th November, 27th December and 9th January 2008 all suggest that Mr Brown is not making the hard, tough decisions.

The Yardstick

I am not a religious person but I was once told by one when we were discussing morality that there is no universal yardstick. Every person is measured by his own personal yardstick. It gave me pause. I had to agree. An intelligent person of principles is judged by his own qualities, not those of an unprincipled idiot. There is no measure against which we can judge Mr Brown but his own.

I do have the sense that Mr Brown is in politics because he cares and because he desires to right what he perceives to be injustice and wrongs. I think that most politicians are in politics for the same reason.

Mr Brown recognises that the Western world have created the problem of climate change by its greedy and uncontrolled consumption of fossil fuel. In fact the United Kingdom has been responsible for more emissions over the past 250 years than any other nation, due to its early and intensive industrial revolution. Mr Brown will not make the hard decisions about climate change becasue put simply these involve sacrifice now for future benefit.

And therefore when you put him up against his own personal yardstick, he fails to measure up.

Hate.

Oh well. Let's see. First, they specifically told me to be there 15 minutes before my 9a.m. appointment and I walk into an office full of people but the receptionist desk window is closed and there is no office staff around. There is also a sign in sheet and no pen.

Some time after 9, they open up, put out pens, etc. and then they start with the "oh you missed a place on this form" stuff. No, I didn't. But I don't want to rant about forms here. Right now the deal is, if I sign all your stupid forms, that is a clear sign that I am not planning to come back. For example (so much for not ranting) - this one had a version of the form where you check all the boxes for conditions you and your family have had. At the end there were three lines. Line one is your agreement to assign any insurance proceeds to the doctor. Line two is permission to disclose your private information. Line three says everything you have checked off is true to the best of your knowledge and there is a signature block.

So, basically, the way the form is designed, you can't agree that what you wrote is true without granting permission for them to disclose your private information. So, if I cared, if there was any chance I was actually going to use this guy, I would have crossed out at least part two. I don't care as much about part one because there isn't going to be any insurance and he would only get that part of the insurance he was entitled to anyway because the law is good at figuring out who owes who money. But I shouldn't have to grant permission to disclose my personal information on this form -- that permission should be on a separate, revocable form. They did the same stupid thing with the line of the arbitration form that they don't need signed. I'm sorry, but I am just enforcing that one on the grounds that if everyone in the office is too stupid to understand the point, I don't want them cutting on me. The point is - the form has a place at the bottom to sign and agree to be coerced by necessity to give up your rights to use the justice system in favor of arbitration. However, there is another line part way down that says if you want the form to apply retroactively to services received before the date you signed below, you should sign there. Obviously if this is your first time in the office and you just signed and dated the form as of that day before you have received any services, there are no services received before that time and there is absolutely no need to sign that line. The point of that line is to confuse you into making any services they accidentally provided before they remembered to get you to sign the non-negotiable contract of adhesion to fall under the arbitration restriction, and there aren't any, so they don't need it. Seriously, if you cannot understand that, you cannot operate on me. Okay?

I hate mandatory arbitration provisions. I like arbitration. If they made us sign a form that said we agreed to arbitrate first, before filing suit, I would have no problem with this. But to make health care services dependent on giving up your legal rights is just wrong.

Um, plus the guy is a jerk. He took one look at me and went into "anything I do will make such a big improvement in your horrible body that it's not worth it to talk about actually going the extra mile to make you look good". Forget about that.

Grand total: 7 consultations, 3 absolutely eliminated, 4 maybes, of which one is the leader. I really think I'm done. And yet, I want to call LoMonaco's office and see about flying to Houston... maybe I just want to go out of town?

News today in the Guardian of a festival of social gaming in London. Festival director Alex Fleetwood was part of Hide and Seek in 2007.

The programme has collaborative games of hide and seek, a project to transform London into Tokyo using bullhorns and tour guides and a flash mob game asking participants to gather on the 28th of June at 6:07:08pm and 'freeze'. What happens next is anybodies guess.

There is also a competition to run your own game at the Hayward Gallery on the 29th of June. It might be a stretch but I'm sure it's possible to turn an online consultation exercise into a physical game that would be engaging, fun and produce results. Wanna play?

My birthday isn't until the end of next month, but someone is getting an early start on their shopping...

The other day I received a "card" from the last PS I consulted with, Dr. Livingston, which says:

"In honor of your Birthday, Dr. Livingston would like to extend to you a special price of $10 per unit for BOTOX Cosmetic (Regularly $13 per unit)"

Um, thanks.

I'm wondering a few things, like - do they send these to all their patients? The burn victims, the mastectomy survivors, the teenagers who just got a nose job? Cause I came in for post-weight-loss plastic surgery, not botox shots and I specifically said that I was not interested in any facial work until after everything else was done.

I'm also wondering - how many units of botox do you need at one time? Is Dr. Livingston giving me a $3 gift, or a $30 gift?

This latest tackiness just confirms my original opinion that I would not let him cut on me if he were the last plastic surgeon in Newport Beach (i.e. after The Apocalypse).

But hey - anyone with a birthday in June who wants discount Botox shots - email me and I'll give you the card. Offer expires 30 days after your Birthday month.

p.s. Dr. Livingston, "birthday" is not normally capitalized in the middle of a sentence.

I like lists. I’ve done lists since a child. I use to do my own top 10 of songs each week and

I like lists. I've done lists since a child. I use to do my own top 10 of songs each week and then do a personal kind of Top of the Pops of Ian's favourite songs. Kylie Minogue was number one a lot.

Er, anyhow, with lists in mind, I thought I'd do a list of five ways in which you can help support NDCS campaigns and and fight to create a world without barriers for deaf children too.

1) Write to your MP. MPs are there to serve their constituents and can be very responsive to your concerns (they won't get re-elected if they don't!). And if there are a large number of MPs concerned about a particular issue, the more a Government is likely to take notice, and take action.

We're currently asking our members to write to their MP about educational under achievement of deaf children. Our website makes it easy for you to do this - just write in your details, and we can work out who your MP is and prepare a draft message that you can check out and send to your MP.

2) Complete our short surveys. You're probably bombarded with people wanting to hear your views. But when we do it, its because having lots of data on what parents of deaf children think can be invaluable in getting MPs and Ministers to see the scale of the challenges that deaf children face. With the data from our short survey on accessible TV for deaf children, we're going to lobby Government Ministers and broadcasters to improve the quantity and quality of subtitles and push for more deaf role models on TV.

3) Tell us your stories. Nothing brings a campaign to life more than hearing the real-life experiences of a family and a deaf child that have been affected by a particular issue. That's why we're always looking for families to tell us their stories and be a case study. We will never use your experiences unless you have given us explicit permission to do so. Send an email to my colleague Pippa McIntyre at philippa.mcintyre@ndcs.org.uk if you're interested in helping us.

4) Respond to Government consultations. From time to time, Governments from across the UK will ask for views from the general public. Responding to these can be a great way of ensuring that Government policy takes into account the needs of deaf children. An opportunity has just come up with a call for evidence issued on child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS).

5) Sign a petition. But gone are the days of signing a piece of paper on a dusty clip-board. You can now sign petitions online - and you can even sign petitions on the Downing Street website. In fact, there's a petition online right now that encourages the Government to fully ratify a UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

These are just five ideas to get you going. The campaigns section of our website lists all of the current campaigns that NDCS are running, with an up to date list of all the ways that you can support our campaigns. If there are any other campaigns you think we should be running, let us know. It'd be great to hear your thoughts.
