This weekend I'll be working a booth at the Pittsburgh Comicon. It isn't a magic booth but a work related boot, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. I'll still be running around checking the premier magic booths and reporting back.

If you are going to be at the PGH Comicon, comment below and lets meet up.

UPDATE

So the Comicon really sucked for magic. There was only one vendor with some booster packs and one secret binder of Ice Age area rares. I was really disappointed about that. Everyone was up for the comic book artists and deals. Maybe next year will be better. One highlight was I met some great guys who own a shop in New Jersey. They don't have a website yet but I'll post a link when they get it up.

Dear Adam Roth,
I am at the Scooter Shop right now. It is raining. It will not stop raining here.

Dear Adam Roth,

I am at the Scooter Shop right now. It is raining. It will not stop raining here. It has been raining for days and days. I want to go away from here. For a week I have waited to see if you are going to New York mid-month, to hang out with superheros and crash on Ryan Lee's couch next to the downstairs bathroom, one of two couches next to one of two bathrooms. Which is important, I know.

I do not know if I will still go if you're not going. I mean, I love it there, but I'd rather save the money and go another time if you're staying home. I would gladly shell out the bones if I knew we'd be able to hang out and go to the Creperie, the Bourgeois Pig, the Time Landscape park, the Cupcake place, the Cake Shop.

An inch makes no difference to me when a mile is what we're closing in on.

Traipsing down 5th to that organic cafe, or the Russian Vodka Room where the drinks are smooth and the mafia men talk shit about you in their native tongue and they have sour cream even a vegan can eat. Giant sunglasses, cameraphones, sketchbooks and Sharpie pens, trains we don't understand and construction scaffolds like nobody's business, whatever the City throws at us, I want it.

The Comicon? Fun, sure. But only a tiny piece of three days when there are bridges to cross and little Lush pins with which to stab the absolute most hidden part of conceit. I have this weird feeling that you may back out of this trip because you are unsure of my motives and you don't want your suspicions to be confirmed or unconfirmed. Maybe you are scared that I care more about this plane ride than you do. That would be awkward.

If that's the case, I understand. You're wrong, but I understand. I know that through the communications we have had, my excitement has vastly surpassed yours. That's okay with me, but I don't see why it would be okay with you.

I will tell you:

See the thing is--

I mean,

It's like this--

Shit.

I actually don't really know what to tell you. I don't know if it's your art or your worrying or your habit of being elusive in the most mind-numbingly infuriating way or the way you talk when you're in a good mood and you're asking interview questions about public transit and drifter lodgings in Norf Cak, but for one, or all of these reasons, I keep hanging on and waiting for you to tell me whether or not to book a flight. Since when do I let boys dictate my vacations?

You're the closest thing I've got to a fakebestfriend next to J Waves.

That's pathetic, right? We've never even met and I consider you one of my closest friends? What is that? I SUCK at talking to real people in person. I fake it as much as I need to, but then there's nothing left, no substance.

Okay I'm starving I have to go. Here's hoping you NEVER find this, even though there's a link to your website in my blogroll. That's what we call "passive-aggressive."

Xo,

Adamandey

A weekend ago, I was invited by the owner of our local comic shop (White Crow Comics) to set up a table as a creator at the "White Crow Comicon", a small show that they have taken over operation of (recently called the "Eastern Kentucky Card and Collectables Show"). It was my first time on "the other side of the table", and I had the chance to meet (and make) some new fans, banter with other table-jockeys and artists, and generally have a good time. The crowd was small, but enthusiastic, and I was happy that I had enough material to fill up a table (actually, I didn't have room to set everything up, much to my relief). Here's a shot of the table, and me, at the beginning of the show.

As I said, I had a great time meeting folks and wound up selling quite a few comics, having some "state of the industry" chats with comic store owners, and in the end, made a profit.) Not a bad way for my first show to go, eh? I also found out that our local university has a troupe of "Light Saber Duelists" who practice with some pretty awesome sabers and pull off some darned nice shows. I shot a picture of an improvised fight with a rather competent Jedi...

I'll be doing a larger show in Lexington this coming weekend (thanks for sharing a table, Rene!), so we'll see how that one goes!

-Dave

I used to go to Balticon with my high school boyfriend and it was a big deal 'cause we'd get to run off to Baltimore and goof around. (If you don't know, Balticon is a sci-fi convention that's been going on forever. Okay actually I think it started in the 60s.) I love me some science fiction but it's comic conventions that really rev my engine, and here in San Francisco we're lucky enough to have a couple doozies. We get APE (the Alternative Press Expo) in November and Wondercon in February (so I can spurge and go "Hey, it's my birthday, I get goodies!"). And if you feel like a road trip, just head on down to San Diego in the summer and hit Comic-con.

A couple years ago at Wondercon, my friends Michael and Andy and I stumbled upon Joss Whedon wandering the isles and proceeded to talk his ears off. He was a real sport. Can't remember if that was before or after I got groped by a Jawa.

There are heaps of very pro looking costumes but honestly I like the homemade, the old school, and of course the tiny superheroes.

I love comics, I love people in costumes, I love how happy and excited everyone is at these things -- it's like a big party.

In the words of Harvey Dent:

"The night is darkest just before the dawn. I promise you. The dawn is coming."

The dawn is coming indeed.

After 3 years and 2 months, the long-awaited sequel to Batman Begins will hit theaters nationwide next Thursday. Such a feat Chris Nolan did in the first movie that I believe The Dark Knight is the most anticipated superhero movie of all time, beating even The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man and, of course, Spider-Man 3 (bleargh!). Sources say that The Dark Knight will run approximately 2.5 hrs. That's 150 minutes of solid film/superhero story-telling and would be worth my every cent!

Anyway, the point of this blog isn't about The Dark Knight or promoting it. I think Warner Bros have done sufficient viral marketing. It is about the state of comic books in Singapore.

Now, recently there was a Toy and Comic Convention held at Suntec City. Needless to say, there was an outstanding turnout, ranging from toy and comic book geeks to cosplayers. I had planned to go, but I didn't because during those months before the convention, I kept getting the list of programs that were going to be featured and sadly, they mostly encompassed anime and manga stuff. Now don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of anime and manga and Japanese pop culture. A lot of my inspirations are derived from games and anime such as Final Fantasy and Hellsing. But I just can't and won't appreciate it in a large crowd that is focusing more on the appearance of anime and manga characters rather than the philosophical and educational values that are embedded within these stories and characters.

Of course, there may be those who are like me. And there may be those who only appreciate American-style comic books, nothing wrong with that. Personally, I believe this country still lacks in the appreciation of American and European-style comics and graphic novels. And that is why a lot of aspiring comic book writers and artists here are doing mainly manga and fantasy (WOW-inspired) stuff.

It's encouraging that there are a bunch of people out there who are going through with their goals and dreams, but I'd have to ask...isn't there anyone out there who's an aspiring comic book writer or artist who is interested in doing American/European-style comics and graphics novels. I'm sure those comic enthusiasts would already know that the mentioned styles have moved away from the conventional men-in-tights story-telling and exploring into other areas that are potentially more interesting and exciting. There are still many different ways in telling a story and with colorful characters, surely an interest or two can be sparked in the minds of casual readers.

Personally, I've been writing my own comic book series since 1996. At present, I've 2 issues done and in the process of making another 3 before releasing my comic books in .cbr format on a website made specifically for my series. My first 12 issues will be compiled into one volume and I already have the next 250+ issues planned out.

Unfortunately, I've yet to find a single Singaporean artist who has the time and commitment to sketch my comics for me. Currently, an Indonesian artist is commissioned to do my comic book series and it isn't difficult to guess that communication is quite hard because I can't sit down and talk things through with him. I only give him reference sketches and the script and just leave it all to faith, believing that he'll deliver exactly as I want it. So far, he's done an excellent job and his work is amazing!

But still, here I am, calling out to whoever is actually interested, willing and capable to deliver as my Singapore-based comic book artist. And also, I would like to hear from anybody out there who actually has an idea, just dying to pen it out into a comic book series (limited or otherwise)...I'd like to hear from you. What you have, how passionate you are, what are your ambitions like in this field? Because deep down, I believe there are plenty of people who have ideas about comic books, but they think it's just too ludicrous or it's a waste of time. Hey! The Japanese don't think so and they relish in their ludicrosity (if there is such a word). They happily channel whatever remnant of radiation those 1945 A-bombs had left into their workflow and produce works of splendor.

So come on, I think it's about time we carve a comic book industry for ourselves and express what we truly want to.

8.56

Baby Tattoo Books is proud to present an exclusive book signing
with award winning artist Viktor Koen at NYC Comicon 2008.
Saturday, April 19, 1-2pm, booth# 1851, Jacob Javits Center.

"When they caused the great cataclysm, the Forces of Dread metamorphosed. From each other’s heads they sprang forth in all their glorious deformity, terrorizing all." So relates Plug, the narrator of this tale, which is neither graphic novel nor science fiction, but a disturbing, strangely familiar, and unusually evocative portrayal of a future "Landscape" that looks eerily like a dystopian conclusion to the evolving twenty-first century.

At the tender age of 4, Plug is already an international celebrity. Since making his debut at the Vavel Comic Book Festival in Athens, this Koen brainchild has been the subject of profiles in Communication Arts and the Los Angeles Times, and has received numerous accolades, including the coveted Photosynkyria Award in Greece, induction into the Digital Hall of Fame and a series of skateboards and snowboards for Fun4U in Europe. His book, authored by Melanie Wallace – Plug in the Guest for Mug – is presented for the first time in the US as part of the Baby Tattoo Books arsenal in NYC Comicon 2008.

Viktor Koen holds a BFA from the Bezalel Academy of Arts & Design in Jerusalem, Israel and an MFA with honors from the School of Visual Arts. Mr. Koen serves on the faculty of Parsons School of Design and the MFA program at SVA. His images are regularly published in The NYTimes, Time, Newsweek and Esquire. His client list includes Penguin, Random House, Doubleday, Harper Collins, Rizzoli, Houghton Miflin, National Geographic, Rolling Stone, Wired, Sports Illustrated, Man’s Journal, Bloomberg, Fortune, Money, Forbes, Nation, Mother Jones, BusinessWeek. His award winning prints are exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States, Europe, Japan and Australia.

Make sure to stop by and see Viktor if you're at Comicon this weekend!

I will be attending a couple of cons this year and thought someone might want to know which ones. As some might know I have a book that is finally coming out through Archaia Studios Press and they set up at a lot of conventions, more than I can afford. Well I'll be kicking off the con season with New York, in about two weeks. I'll be set up at the Archaia table so depending on how many of my fellow creators show up, that's where you'll find me some or most of the time.

The next show is in May and it's at the Rock Financial showplace in Novi MI. My so-to-speak home town show the Motor City Con.

Following that is the Wizard World Chicago, I'm hoping to get my own table for that one in the artist alley (which I still need to send in my check and reg. form,... heh heh) there will be an Archaia table there, so if by some chance the alley is full, you can check there for me. If I do get a table we will still set up some time for me to be behind the ASP booth as well.

Ha haaaa! I will be attending the San Diego con this year! First time behind the table at this one, hopefully they let us have a bigger set up this year. I heard it was kinda small last year. I love this con. and the city, glad I get to share it with Emily (I hope she doesn't kill me afterward). Here I come Boco de Beppo (hope I got that right, my apologies to any that know differently).

There are two cons. I would like to attend but I'm not 100% on right now that's Baltimore (oh about 83% sure), and Philly Wizard World (something like 58% sure). Keep it tuned here to find out the deliberations.

I try to have something new for every show so hope to see you out there.

Hollywood's version of the origins of "SuperGuy." This glamorized account is far different than the one described by SuperGuy's mother and sister; although his father does seem to support the theory that he "came from another planet." It is odd that the story seems so similar to the comic book tale of Superman.
