<blockquote><p>The concept of washoku, pervasive in Japan to the point that many people aren't aware they're following precepts dating back at least 800 years, is almost unknown outside the country. </p>
<p>Q: During the past 30 years, sushi has become almost as American as apple pie. What is washoku?</p>
<p>A: "It has several meanings. Washoku is written with two characters. The first, "wa," has two meanings. It can mean indigenous to Japan, so when it is used before another word, it means Japanese. "Shoku," the other character, means anything that is consumed. So washoku means the food that is indigenous to Japan. Western food would be yoshoku. The second meaning of the "wa" calligraphy is harmony. So washoku is also the harmony of food. If you layer those together, you have the harmony of food that is indigenous to Japan. </p>

This picture, Tiepolo's largest and most dazzling oil sketch, shows Apollo about to embark on his daily course across the sky. Deities around the sun god symbolize the planets, and allegorical figures on the cornice represent the four continents.</p>
<p>Tiepolo presented this preliminary sketch to Carl Philipp von Greiffenklau, the prince-bishop of Würzburg, on April 20, 1752, as his proposal for the decoration of the vast staircase ceiling of the Residenz, often considered the artist's greatest achievement.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>Iconologia</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Modern iconography of the continents began to the established in the sixteenth century, drawing on antique precedents and reports of travelers. By Tiepolo's time the subject was so popular in all the arts that the range of accepted images was large. For a painter in the dual tradition of allegorical and monumental decoration, however, that range included a customary iconography with predominant motifs taken from the text and illustrations of Cesare Ripa's handbook of allegorical figures, the <em>Iconologia</em>. Ripa's book had long since standardized the use of female personnification accompanied by indigenous animals and local artifacts; in additio, widely distributed engravings and other sources had contributed some conventions like the mounted positions of the personifications.</p>

<p>The story takes place in 1904 (37th year of the Meiji Era) during the <strong>Russo-Japanese War</strong> in which former Japanese diplomat, Shintaro Umakai, becomes the teacher of a secret group of teenage girls, the Raimu Unit, who are based on the flying battleship Amanohara. The girl's Konjiki (supernatural powers) enables them to operate unmanned mecha named Raimu against Russian Raimu units led by Grigori Rasputin who often attack the Amanohara while it's travelling towards Port Arthur for the final battle.</p></blockquote>

<p>Die Geheimgesellschaft wurde 1832 in New Haven,<br />
Connecticut von William Huntington Russell,Alphonso<br />
Taft und zwölf oder dreizehn weiteren Studenten gegründet,<br />
die z. T. keine Aufnahme in der Yale-internen Studentenorganisation<br />
Phi Beta Kappa gefunden hatten.Die erste Skull-&#38;-Bones-Klasse<br />
(Bones-englisch cohort oder club) bestand im Jahre 1833.<br />
Der Schädel des Geronimo  Prescott Bush, später Senator von Connecticut,<br />
Vater von George H. W. Bush und Großvater von George W. Bush, soll<br />
im Mai 1918 den Schädel des Apachenhäuptlings Geronimo aus dem Fort<br />
Sill bei Oklahoma eigenhändig mit fünf anderen Bonesmen aus vier<br />
Jahrgängen ausgegraben und ihn als Geschenk der Bruderschaft präsentiert<br />
haben. Diese Geschichte und Fotos aus der Gruft vom Schädel und anderen<br />
gestohlenen Grabbeigaben wurden dem Apache-Indianer und Aktivisten<br />
„Chief“ Ned Anderson zugespielt, der auf der Suche nach den sterblichen<br />
Überresten Geronimos war. Er verlangte die Herausgabe. Das FBI<br />
(damals noch Bureau of Investigation) lehnte es ab, sich in<br />
den Streit einzumischen, so lange, bis Anderson sich nicht aus den<br />
Ermittlungen zurückziehe und seine Belege überdenke; ein Angebot,<br />
welches Anderson ausschlug. Anderson berichtete A. Robbins,<br />
dass ein Treffen mit Jonathan Bush, dem Bruder des damaligen<br />
Vize-Präsidenten George H. W. Bush, nicht zustande gekommen sei.<br />
Bei einem Treffen mit Skull-&#38;-Bones-Anwalt Davison sei ihm der<br />
Schädel eines  zehnjährigen Jungen gezeigt worden. Auf den Vorschlag,<br />
diesen Schädel mitzunehmen und eine Erklärung des Ordens zu akzeptieren,<br />
der Schädel Geronimos befinde sich nicht in der Gruft, ließ<br />
Anderson sich nicht ein. Er veröffentlichte die Begebenheiten des<br />
Treffens mit der Bemerkung, dass es sich nicht um den Schädel aus der<br />
Skull-&#38;-Bones-Bruderschaft gehandelt habe. Seinem Ersuchen, einen<br />
DNA-Test durchführen zu lassen, wurde nicht stattgegeben,<br />
und somit geht die Legende weiter. Yale erhält die Gerüchte jedoch<br />
weiter am Leben,indem sie in einem eigenen Magazin veröffentlicht,<br />
dass die Gruft in New Haven ebenso im Besitz des Schädels von<br />
Pancho Villa sein könnte.</p>

<title><![CDATA["The Virtual Codex from Page Space to E-space" By Johanna Drucker ]]></title>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Drucker's article, found here for those playing at home, outlines the historical legacy of the electronic book, or e-book, and explores options for the future of it.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Often the rhetoric involved stresses the advantages of the e-book over the traditional book, with the common view being "that electronic books will supersede the limitations of paper-based books and overcome the drawbacks of traditional books." Instead, Drucker asks us to view the electronic book as actually very similar to the traditional codex, only embodying one or two extra features.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Because electronic resources often mimic the book, many of the features provided are merely simulations of characteristics of the traditional book and have no other purpose except as nostalgic references to help re-orientate the reader. Even those familiar with the e-book rely on such markers to help aid memory and it seems the public even prefer an appropriated format, with "IBM research suggest[ing] that readers "prefer features in electronic books that emulate paper book functions.""</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">There is also a tendency to view the printed book as a static object and the e-book as interactive and virtual. However Drucker, in an argument dripping with postmodernist thought, maintains that the book "is not an inert thing that exists in advance of interaction, rather it is produced new by the activity of each reading." So we can see that there are varied readings every time a book is opened according to the subjectives the reader bring and the reliance on multiple points of entry into the text. The book also interacts with us through the use of visual hierarchy, space and colour, hinting to us on how to decode the book. The codex is not static. Instead it is multi-layered and interactive, similar to that way we conceive of e-books and the e-book is more like the printed book than we previously thought.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">This leads Drucker to contend that we would be better served if we removed the constraints of the typical book format, allowing the e-book to develop its own set of norms, markers and aids:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>"I would argue that as long as visual cues suggest a literal book, our expectations continue to be constrained by the idea that books are communication devices whose form has a static and formal, rather than active and functional, origin."</em></p></blockquote>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Experimental structures in e-books have not leaned towards this reformation and it is instead seen growing within the arena of games. This needs to change, according to Drucker. The traditional view that the book should be the guide of design for the e-book is "grotesquely reductive and unproductive." Instead we must let the e-book flourish on its own accord and let it grow into what it rightfully is; a new medium.</p>
