This blog posting is interesting. Not only does user/customer collaboration make new service development more effective, but it also increase positive affect. Customers like being involved.

I liked the closing lines of the posting:

I am a divine idea of a loving God, created for a divine purpose, which finds its greatest satisfaction in expression of its uniqueness, in harmony with God’s other divine ideas, which make up the infinite universe.
All of the millions of tiny needles on a fir tree are necessary for the perfect functioning of the tree. You and I are like those needles — we are right here, right now, because the universe requires it.
♦

[Knowing who you are] does not even require your realization, since you already are who you are. But without realization, who you are does not shine forth into this world.... You are... like an apparently poor person who does not know he has a bank account with $100 million in it and so his wealth remains an unexpressed potential. —Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth

♦

Who am I? What am I? How did I get here? Now that I am here, what should I be doing? No kidding? All that? Can I have a nap first?

These are the kinds of questions most of us ask from time to time — for example,

During or after a crisis

During or after a long summer evening at the campsite drinking beer and saying to virtual strangers, “I love ya, man.”

When we have way too much time on our hands (see also [b])

When we’re not struggling for survival; that is, when our basic physical needs have been met

When we’re tired of struggling for survival and we’re wondering if it’s worth it

When we’re living in a dorm and a lot of us are taking Philosophy 203: The Mind-Body Problem (with a focus on the nature of our mental life in relation to the brain)

When we’re depressed; when we doubt our value; when we discover that other people’s perceptions of us are less flattering than our own

When, in short, we find that we’re not who we thought we were, which is just as well, because we’re never who we think we are, and we’re just as likely to be as uncertain today as we were yesterday

As in Chapter 3, however, I’ll put forth a few operational definitions so that we’re all speaking the same language, or nearly so. These definitions will be incomplete but useful answers to the questions

What is the self?

In what sense can you know yourself?

Is it possible to “reinvent” yourself? (Reinvent is the buzzword du jour for “adapt” or “change.” None of these words says precisely what I mean. “Adapting” is passive and gradual. “Changing” is too general. “Reinventing” implies that you’re starting from scratch.

(“Participating in your own creation” or “co-creating yourself” are cumbersome but are more to the point—which is that, when things aren’t going well, or when what has worked for you in the past doesn’t work any more, you can either change your approach or rant about the unfairness of everything. “Participating in your own creation” conveys both intention and acceptance of an essential, divinely created self.)

There are tomes dealing with each of these concepts. Take self-knowledge, for example. Most would agree that since the self is never static, it can never be known. By the time you figure out who you are, you’re someone else. *

[caption id="attachment_272" align="aligncenter" width="467" caption="By the time you figure out who you are, you're someone else "][/caption]

I have only a casual observer’s understanding of Buddhist ideas about the amorphous self—personal identity without boundaries. But Buddhists don’t want everybody to walk around bumping into things all the time. The Buddha himself emerged from his transformative meditation believing in the “Middle Way” between an ascetic life and a worldly one. To learn more about what I call “practical Buddhism,” which I hope is not an oxymoron or an offense to actual Buddhists, I highly recommend the book The Joy of Living, by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche (Harmony Books, 2007).

Let’s assume for the moment that it’s possible to have a working knowledge of ourselves through information gained from three sources: (a) self-observation, (b) a more-or-less accurate understanding of others’ perceptions of us, and (c) revelation (or, if you prefer, intuition). Now consider the story of my friend Carrie, a widow, who had an electrical problem.

[caption id="attachment_277" align="alignright" width="254" caption="The Buddha"][/caption]

Who is Carrie: Tramp, chemist, pathetic widow?

Several aspects of Carrie’s surface identity are easy to describe: She is

a widow

a charming woman with a firm handshake and a good memory for names. When she says, “It’s a pleasure to meet you,” she means it. She asks friendly questions about your family, your work, your beer-bottle-cap collection. If you rebuild transmissions for a living, Carrie can’t think of anything more fascinating. “Now, how is it that my automatic transmission knows when it’s time to shift into overdrive?” she wants to know.

a neatnik. Carrie is one of those people who dust beneath and behind the sofa daily. She can see bacteria and viruses with the naked eye. Hospital sterilization personnel salute her as she walks by. They name autoclaves after her.

not an electrician. Carrie doesn’t know an amp from an alligator. She breaks out in hives when she has to change a light bulb.

Thus, when the electrical outlet next to her bed stopped functioning, Carrie called in a professional. Al the electrician would arrive at 8 a.m. the next morning, Carrie was assured.

In the perverse way of such professionals, Al arrived at 7:15. Carrie was discomfited because, though she was dressed and halfway through her second cup of coffee, and though her little house was always spick and span, she hadn’t yet made her bed.

She greeted Al at the door, offered him coffee (which he declined), and ushered him into the bedroom. The electrical outlet was situated near the floor between Carrie’s bed and her nightstand. There were four items neatly arranged on the nightstand: an alarm clock, a lamp, a book, and a jar labeled (in letters that, to Carrie’s horrified eyes, appeared at least two feet tall) “Sexual Enhancement Cream.” As Carrie told me later that day,

Al was here for half an hour, fooling with that electrical outlet, reaching over the table checking this and that, at one point even elbowing the jar aside; and he's talking to me, explaining electrical things, and I don't remember a word he said because I was trying so hard to be nonchalant, while this jar, before my very eyes, is inflating to four or five times its original size and also changing from white to neon orange with flashing purple letters, and an actual human voice, like at a carnival, is shouting "Sexual Enhancement Cream! Getcher Sexual Enhancement Cream here, on Carrie’s nightstand, next to her unmade bed!"

Carrie used the word mortified several times. She could have said embarrassed or humiliated. Mortified, really, is overkill, so to speak. Mortify enters the English language from the French mortifier, which in turn comes from the Latin mortificare: “to put someone to death.”

But there is a sense — a poetic sense — in which Carrie was indeed “put to death” during that excruciating half-hour and for a while afterward. Carrie’s “death” is, of course, metaphorical.

The self she knew, the tidy widow, mortified
By nothing but a jar, was stricken, died,
And what was resurrected wasn’t she at all,
But something hard, dispassionate; so small
And wretched, so pathetic, it seemed barely worth
Its rations—water, air, a bit of earth.

During that excruciating half-hour, Carrie saw herself as she imagined Al must have seen her. Since Al had given no sign of having even noticed the jar (“but he couldn’t possibly have missed it!”), her imagination ran wild. In Al’s eyes, she was (a) an oversexed spinster, (b) a brazen hussy, or (c) a purveyor of phone pornography.

I suggested (d) a chemist, and anyway, (e) why did she care what Al thought? But for some reason, in Carrie’s mind, Al’s perception of her had become more important than her own, which, it appeared, was a little on the fuzzy side. “Widowhood” was still a strange and shadowy place for Carrie. Her identity as “Phil’s wife” had been well defined. Without Phil, she wasn’t sure who she was.

_______________

* My research on the physics of observing and understanding a system (in this case, the self) when you, the observer, are embedded within the system, came to an abrupt halt when I learned that it would involve “fractals,” which—being statistically self-similar to their substructures and, further, generated by an infinitely recursive process—are clearly wicked, and possibly radioactive as well, and should be avoided at all cost.

Lesson 10.1: Assignment
How 'Conscious' Are You?

Eckhart Tolle writes in A New Earth that "nothing you can know about you is you." We are not our titles or our roles. When my children were still living at home, I was so enmeshed in the role of "motherhood" that I became very ill when my youngest left the nest.

[caption id="attachment_279" align="alignright" width="170" caption="Eckhart Tolle"][/caption]

Meditation is one way to encounter your "essential" self—the you that isn't plastered over with ego: roles, ambitions, relationships, other people's perceptions, even your own measurement of your worth. Tolle calls these things "content... the inner and outer circumstances of your life, your past and your future [as well as] ... events." The more you identify with "the inner space of consciousness"—which, unlike content, is not transient—the less likely you are to be buffeted about by emotions and the freer you are to live poetically.

If you are young and competent, you probably have experienced little tragedy and you are confident of your ability to manage your life. I remember thinking, from time to time, that I "couldn't bear it" if "X" happened, and I would do everything in my power to prevent it. And then "X" happened anyway (my first big "X" was the death of my mother at age 62), and I suffered, and survived, and grew in compassion. Since then, there have been lots of "X's," and there is little left to be afraid of, and much to celebrate.

Your assignment is to answer the following questions in a paragraph or two (about fifty words):

What makes you unhappy or afraid? What do you have or do that, if you couldn't have it or do it, would seriously disrupt your sense of self?

It's important to be honest here. This is the first step in "knowing thyself." I will not ask you to send me this assignment, but it is important to write down your answers and save them for use later in this course.

Next: Chapter 4, Part 2: Your Self Is Irrepressible

Doedelen?

I’ve just spent two fabulous weeks in the hills of the Sierra De Las Nieves in Spain, sunning myself and meeting a wide range of interesting people, including a guy named Bill. Bill and his wife moved to Spain two years ago, spending their life’s savings on a few acres of scrub land and a wooden shack. Today they are the proud owners of the same. Speak to Bill about the wonderful views, the 40 degree temperatures, the lack of traffic and pollution and he tells you about the sweltering heat, the need for rain and the lack of facilities. Bill it seems came to Spain on a whim, buying a property with no running water or electricity and wants to return to England…soon!
Luckily our Villa came fully equipped, with swimming pool, multiple toilets, air conditioning, fully stocked wine cellar and the essential Visitors Book, where previous guests had kindly rated all the local restaurants and attractions so we didn’t put a foot wrong. I love the concept of Visitor Books and have often wondered why more brands don’t adopt this simple concept to help potential buyers. Increasingly we see star ratings being used on internet sites, but why not take this concept further. Why not incentivise buyers of their new BMW, to write a diary on their first few weeks with their new purchase, telling us how the car performs on the head turning stakes. Or what about the diary of Camelot Lottery winners … keeping the dream alive for all of us who are losing “the faith” and a must read for every charity fundraiser!
When making a buying decision we all know that somewhere in the world somebody is just ahead of us. Everybody would benefit from a greater sharing of experiences, just as Bill would have benefited from reading the Visitor Book to Spain!

I wrote this almost a year ago.. hard to believe… what a year it’s been!
It still holds

I wrote this almost a year ago.. hard to believe... what a year it's been!
It still holds true.

Like most folks I know, I'm pretty ambivalent about money. I grew up in a counter-culture household that valued many other things more than money. I was well-trained to suspect it, to distrust it, to avoid it. And for years, I told myself, "Oh, I'm not interested in money. It's impersonal and corrupting. What I'm interested in, are things that money just can't buy."

But as my life has grown and expanded, I've found myself dealing more and more with an ever enlarging world, where the opportunity to do work-exchanges or barter, hasn't presented itself. I'm dealing a lot more, every day, with people I've never met before. People who have things to offer me, and services I need, who aren't willing to "work a trade" of my web-building expertise for their services. The arborist who's pruning my trees, can't make use of my abilities. Nor can the farm stand down the road. And frankly, they haven't got the time for me to explain to them just how much good a website will do them.

They need money.

I'm also coming across an increasing number of folks who are working for positive change in the world, who have real financial needs. They need to print educational materials. They need to pay for plane fares. They need to pay for internet connectivity. And they need to support themselves and their families, while they work to effect lasting change in a needy world. These are not selfish people. These are selfless, giving individuals, who deserve to have all their human needs met, while working day and night for the benefit of humanity.

They need money.

In my own work, too, I find myself focusing more and more on change that reaches beyond my own life. Change that moves me away from dependency on fossil fuels. Change that moves me away from workaday activities that drain my energy. Change that moves me towards a life that has true quality -- not necessarily one kind of quality alone, but real depth and breadth that give my life texture and deep significance. In order to move more towards this way, I have to de-couple myself from the mindless rote activities that are standard-issue, when it comes to making a living. I have to make a life, not a living. I have to meet my obligations and responsibilities with joy and pleasure and open-hearted anticipation, and I need to live up to my responsibilities and take my place in the world as a full participant and co-creator.

To do this, I need money.

Now, as I said, I was raised in a counter-culture household, where money was often seen as a corrupting influence. The rich were suspect. The super-rich were condemned. People who had lots of money, were generally held in suspicion of having done something unsavory to get that way. Money, I was taught, was a root of evil and a temptation and it had a strictly limited place in the lives of people who knew that the best things in life were free. Community and personal interconnection were stressed. Alternative means of living were emphasized. It was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than it was to get into heaven, if you were rich.

And of course, we all wanted to get into heaven. Who wouldn't?

But in spite of my training, hidden away from sight in the back of my mind, I've always been of the conviction that money does matter, that money is not evil, in and of itself, and that in the right hands, a lot of money can do a lot of good. I kept that opinion to myself, of course. I didn't dare say out loud that money itself was not the culprit, but the people who controlled the money were. It was a foregone conclusion that, no matter how virtuous you were, if you got some money, you'd be irreversibly tainted and all your attentions would turn inward towards yourself -- at the expense of the greater whole.

Biases against money were -- and still are -- so deeply entrenched, that questioning them instantly puts one in the same category as the ultra-evil ultra-rich. Even mentioning that we might want to rethink our ideas about money, is viewed askance.

But ironically, the very people who once taught me that money is a source of evil, are now interested in having more of it in their lives. My parents, who tried to instill other values in me, are nearing retirement, with far too little saved, for comfort. My father is shepherding an educational initiative which has great potential to change lives, but he lacks the funding to really make it fly. Pamphlets and booklets need to be printed, and the printer doesn't work for free. Airfare costs money. Gasoline costs money. He can stay with friends when he travels from town to town, but he needs to eat. And he needs to pay for his computer supplies and internet connection. My mother is worried, they won't have enough money to support themselves, when she retires from public school teaching next year. Yes, she's got a pension, and Dad might be getting a grant or a loan, but will it be enough? What if their health fails? What about the vacations they want to take? After all these years, of not putting emphasis on not letting money run their lives, suddenly, money is the main thing running their lives.

It's time to start talking about money. We live in a big, complex, highly-interconnected world where value of one object or service does not translate equally between individuals. We live in a world where bartering doesn't cut it, where we have bills and expenses and fundamental needs, which need to be met with money. We live in a world, where local businesses are threatened by multinational conglomerates, and local craftsmen are losing ground to DIY warehouse stores. We live in a world, where we need money, and we ignore this element of our lives at our peril.

So, let's put aside all the fear and aggravation around money, for a while, and start talking about it and thinking about it rationally. A lot of "survival issues" come up, as money is a root cause -- of tremendous good, as well as some evil. Money is so closely tied to our will to live, our fears of dying, our anxieties about abandonment, our feelings of self-worth and love from others, it can be difficult to separate out all that baggage from the element itself.

But guess what -- that's just something we have to learn to do. Just as we've learned, over the past 50 years, how better to work with our natural world, reduce pollution, and protect valuable land, water and air, it's now time to learn to work with our money -- learn how to approach it, not as slaves, but as masters. Not as beggars, but as co-creators. It's time for us to start trusting ourselves to use money, to wield it properly, as a trained craftsman wields a circular saw. It's time for us to give serious and concentrated thought to how to better incorporate money in our lives, as a good and constructive force for positive change.

Let's think well about money -- for a change.

I want less taxing relationships in my life. I want less morning grumpies. I want less stress and I

I want less taxing relationships in my life. I want less morning grumpies. I want less stress and I want less time crunch.

Over the last few months, I have spent a lot of time thinking and writing about how we co-create our lives relationships and realities with other people. When you begin to take responsibility for your life and really accept that you are solely responsible for the status of the relationships in your life, it can be a tough pill to swallow. So that rude cashier that I encountered at the grocery store is my fault? Well, let us get away from blame, but what was my attitude when I woke up this morning and how did I plan for that encounter at the store? That is the better question.

This morning, for instance, I was a little grumpy as my husband and I went for our three mile walk on the Greenway. He is always such a happy camper. Nothing kills his spirit. He wakes up happy and affectionate. This is what I want right? Well, the truth is sometimes it gets on my nerves. It definitely got on my nerves this morning. I did not sleep well and I was definitely grumpy.

Well, as we walked, he got chatty and happy. I got grumpier. I did not want to talk. I wanted to be alone in my sullenness and just think! Why is he always so damn happy all the time!

Well, I finally stumbled on the truth. The truth is that his happiness and affection tends to make me feel guilty. Yes, guilty. I know that being happy and affectionate is a good thing and I want more of that in my life but why do I hold on to those morning grumpies for just a little too long? Hmmmm......

This was an epiphany today - that my husband's good mood actually stirs up guilt because it is really pointing me in the right direction. So, I embraced the guilt. Thanked it for serving such a great purpose in my life and let it go.

I knew I married that handsome guy for a reason.

So, as I had that epiphany, I started smiling. I felt so grateful for the lesson and that I had married such a great guy and that he loves to be around me, even when I am not my best. I then flowed into the feeling of appreciation for the Greenway and smiled at all the people we met along the way. I felt grateful that my husband is a runner but has started walking with me to support me and he goes at my pace. I realized that in the morning breeze, with the sun shining on my face, I am the most blessed girl alive.

Before you know it, the grumpies were banished away.

I am grateful that I have a relationship with a guy that unknowingly ups my vibration.

Now that is love!

Affirmation: I know what I want and it comes to me so easily.

If your customers help create new services: the results should better fit customer needs, the process should be speeded, and many ideas generated. However, a firm must find a way to deal with a cast of stakeholders, must speed up existing processes, and must screen a multitude of ideas.

“Co-creation…affects everything the company does, from product development to marketing, even to billing,” says Ramaswamy. “Co-creation is going to become like oxygen.”

Why is it that when you talk to an estate agent, no let me rephrase that… when an estate agen

Why is it that when you talk to an estate agent, no let me rephrase that... when an estate agent lies to you, telling you a flat you are interested in renting, is just a "5 minute walk away from the tube"... You weigh up the property, pointing out the walk is clearly more than a 5 minute commute, more like a 10 minute power-walk, but on the whole, the place is a steal and you put pen to paper...

But then something strange happens... once contracts exchanged etc and the paperwork is complete, you suddenly become very protective of that walk, describing it to visiting friends as just a 7 minute stroll from the station (I sometimes find I'll come out and meet them half way to soften the lie I've just told them)... and it really is very convenient promptly realing off all the god things that you can do in that 7 minute walk (listen to XFM before getting on the tube, bit of exercise, wake up walk blah blah yada yada).

There is a point in here somewhere for marketing folk... give our target audience something to possess and something to own. If we involved them a bit more in our own marketing strategies, people are much more likely to become advocates for the project or campaign that we involve them with. It moves campaigns away from a push comms strategy and starts by listening to the conversations that are going on around the brand or sector, we can identify who to invite in on such ideas. I think this approach has particular traction online where word of mouth can spread so much more easily, but more fundamentally, it's kinda cool, having companies want to involve their customers in campaign/product design/strategy development etc and as a consequence by giving consumers ownership over a particular aspect of a programme, much like I'm likely to big up the location of the flat I rent, I'm more than likely to promote the campaign I'm working on as a consumer. Some cracking examples are Dell IdeaStorm-here, Starbucks- here and NikeID- here.

P.s My flat mate Sam who has been watching over my shoulder whilst writing this, has just reminded me to also reinforce the point, that estate agents, "without exception" are all tossers. Thanks Sam.

I am having so much fun in Dallas this weekend with my family. It is such a thrill to walk away from

I am having so much fun in Dallas this weekend with my family. It is such a thrill to walk away from the normal flow of life and take a break in a completely different setting, which you understand to be a safe and calming place. I take comfort in the fact that I can stay here as long as I want and have no real obligation to do anything. It is all taking care of itself and in the background of my life, things are working together to make sure that my life is full of abundance and happiness. I am grateful for that.

It makes me happy when things come naturally and easily for me. I love learning new things and enjoy the fact that my brain capacity for tucking away valuable information to be used for problem solving is expanding and soaking up everything it sees, hears and feels. I love discovering new things and take pride the the feeling of accomplishment I have when I can find a way to do something that others might not thought possible. I am a problem solver and there is no problem that is too complicated or too large for me to solve. It is so much fun, living here, knowing that I can do anything with ease. YES! ;)

I've been having so much fun, lately, just being. Isn't it wonderful when you can just exist and have nothing but an overwhelming sense of peace and belonging? Wealth and happiness flow to me in an everlasting stream and it has never been easier for me to obtain every little thing that I desire. If I think about something, I have full confidence that it will appear in my life. It is law and I can have it all.

I have been cherishing the great relationships that I have and the wonderful new relationships that I am creating on a daily basis. It is important to me to find like-minded individuals with which I can co-create. I am finding them in great numbers and together we are making the world a better place through positive thought and co-creation. It is thrilling to live in a world of peace.

I am finding that my health is improving every single day and I am thankful for this. What's more is that with my improved health, my body is becoming leaner and more fit. Am I getting to the point where a photographer will follow me around as I walk shirtless on the beach? I think so. ;)

I find great joy in helping others find themselves and what is most important in their life. Everyone should be as lucky as I am to know exactly what they want and then be able to trust that they will get it. I am glad that it is so easy for me to find the words that point people in the right direction towards what it is that they really want. Anything I can do to help someone realize their potential is time well spent, but I am glad that I am not having to spend much time on this, as of late, because the people I am attracting into my life are already aware of what they want and are very much on their way to getting it. It is a nice and wonderful thing to co-create and constantly be inspired by those around you. I am constantly inspired.

Things are looking up in my world and as I move into new ventures, I know that I am ready and prepared for everything that is to come. I know that I can trust in myself and those guiding me to reach my end goal and realize that there is no reason I cannot achieve great things in every venture I take on in my life. Great ideas are flowing to me every second of the day and night and I take comfort knowing that it will be so easy for me to execute those ideas. I am blessed to know that I am attracting wealth and happiness with every thought that I take.

I love you. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. ;)

Gelukkig kwam YouTube.

Mike Figgis, acclaimed Brit director, risen to fame for titles such as "Leaving Las Vegas" and "One Night Stand", has agreed to spearhead a mobile community co-creation experiment with Sony Ericsson. The thing in question is entitled "Life Captured" and it bravely attempts to gather storyboard submissions from around the world consisting of mobile phone snapshots of the people's lives under time categories that Mike has set himself. Once uploaded, the storyboards can be viewed by anyone, from close friends to the biggest names in Hollywood (or so we hope). Afterviewing all the storyboards submitted, Figgis will select a national winner from each participating country. That person will then receive a personal brief from him to capture images for the final cut. This is when Sony Ericsson will "throw in" some C902 Cyber-shot cameraphones, apparently equipped with the fastest aperture and hence allowing better spontaneity from the artist.

Here is Mike Figgis being interviewed about digital filmmaking and the door that it opens to anyone being able to shoot with high level of quality, therefore widening the opportunity for amateur filmmaking.

The competitive arena is shifting from a product-centric view of value creation (for example, tires) to a personalized experience centric view of value creation (for example, pricing based on usage by application and driving habits that influence wear and tear). From the examples presented in the book "The New Age of Innovation", CK Prahalad and MS Krishnan can identify 5 key elements of the transformation toward N=1; R=G. Learn about these 5 elements here.

At least since publication of the Cluetrain Manifesto, with its basic point that markets are convers

At least since publication of the Cluetrain Manifesto, with its basic point that markets are conversations, the importance of customers, online and off -- but especially those online, to innovation gained widespread recognition. Pointing out the importance of customer communities to sustaining innovation is not exactly a new insight. In recent years the term co-creation emerged to describe the process, whether applied to established companies or start-ups. However, understanding what leads customers to engage in co-creation is important. A story at Nokia Conversations points to a recent study sponsored by Nokia Beta Labs that offers a profile of the customers active in their community, framing the relationship as follows:

While on one side it seems cheap to release unfinished goods and ask for help. But at the same time, it's amazing to involve eager customers who not only make the product even better than if we did it alone, but are all lined up to take the product they helped make...

Understanding which individuals are more likely to engage in co-creation can benefit efforts to engage your company's customers in product innovation. No doubt, participants in the Nokia customer community differ from those who might belong to a community of customers outside the mobile device market. However, the Nokia community research study provides information about the characteristics of 691 customers who participate in the Nokia community and what motivates those customers to engage in co-creation. Nokia Beta Labs allows users of Nokia mobile devices to download applications and provide private feedback or public feedback via blog posts.

The Nokia report observes that a much larger number of respondents to the survey (53%) simply downloaded a Beta Labs application, compared to the 35% who downloaded an application and gave feedback. Even fewer, 19% of total respondents, provided public feedback. Almost 80% of respondents reported that they try Nokia Beta Labs applications from interest in the technology and following what is happening in mobile devices. Around 65% of those providing feedback indicated they do so to help others and make a difference. Of those who provided public feedback, around 75% indicated they do so to enable discussion. In addition, over 40% of those providing public feedback also indicated they do so because it makes them feel more connected to other community members.

The age range of respondents to the Nokia study was between 14 and 65 years, with an average age of 30.4 years. Around 96% of respondents were male and almost 70% either work in a technology related occupation or possess a technical education.

Most insurance companies are currently facing multiple challenges simultaneously. Their policy processing costs are getting higher as the competition for customers is heating up. In addition, the turnaround time from the initiation of a policy request to its completion can take, given the level of customization, a significant amount of time. CK Prahalad and MS Krishnan have proposed a solution to this problem from what they learned from ING insurance case.

Michel Gondry is probably the most talented filmmaker these days. Not only is he the only one to have shot an all-in-camera feature film - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but has now joined our Forces Against Copyrights Evil (*joke*) with Be Kind Rewind.

According to Gondry, "Sweding is "you take what you like and mix it with some other things you like and make a new thing. It's not the thing it was but now it's a new thing based on the old thing. It's putting you into the thing you like. That's "sweding".

Here is Michel "sweding" his own trailer.

I am banging on this because the reality is emerging now amidst filmmakers themselves, who do not mind when fans do remixes of their films. I had conversations about this at Cannes and it is definitely a topic that will get bigger as the year progresses and independent filmmakers get closer to their fans by letting them co-create. Be kind, rewind is a co-created film and a sweet metaphore of what this wave brings to us all. Rent it. It's now on video. And go to this site to watch all the "sweded" films Jack Black and Def Mos did on the film. You will want to shoot your own home movies.

Imagine a situation in which you go to a shoe store and your feet are measured precisely using a digital camera or scanner. The store sends this information to its company's processing center, which then sends the information to one of its factories. In 10 days you get a pair of shoes that has been custom made for you-not just its color and shape, but its precise fit as well. From then on, your preferences and requirements are part of the database, and you can order any number of shoes till you know that you need new measurements. Pomarfin, a small Finnish family-owned firm, has been experimenting with this concept.

After presenting how the N = 1 and R = G framework works in two traditional industries (secondary education and truck tire industries), CK Prahalad and M.S. Krishnan have demonstrated that this framework can work in other business-to-business firms. They takes several examples. The first one is NCR, a leader in selling automatic teller machines (ATMs) to large global banks such as Bank of America and Wells Fargo. NCR also sells point-of-sale (PaS) systems to large retailers such as Tesco and Home Depot, and it is learning that in order to provide value to its B2B customers, it needs to understand the changing expectations, skills, and behaviors of the end consumer.

There are a million reasons I could give as to why music and film, once they enter society, and they are savoured, sampled, devoured and idolised, become particles of popular culture, and hence, once time has stripped the economic return from them, they should become copyright-free for artistic purposes.

One of the typical examples that I give when speaking about co-creation in video content, is this gr

One of the typical examples that I give when speaking about co-creation in video content, is this great tryptic derived from a stage performance by Eddie Izzard, the greatest cross-dresser comedian.

So we first sample Eddie doing his thing, which BTW, takes inspiration from another film asset, STARWARS. Fast forward to minute 2.16

And when this content, which takes leverage from another asset, is remixed by another artist,he credits Eddie clearly and we get this:

But the medium is open to remixing the asset with one's best skills and creativity, and the one that for me beats them all is this:

Warholising is a term we coined at Sense Worldwide when we produced insight research about why people remix, mashup and appropriate third party content to create something superior. This definition is precise: one has to aim artistically to offer an enhanced experience. From this point of elevating the subject, Warhol got away with not being sued by Campbell soup, or Jeff Koons by Spalding.

Why on earth record labels and film studios do not release the copyrights to their materials when the remixing is for the sake of art and not economic - and here we are, begging for the crumbs of Creative Rights, when in the Art world all these pieces go for millions to the artist, his agents and auction houses... It is something that I am fighting in every meeting I have with Execs in the aforementioned businesses. Cory has been a great help but he is now, more than ever, a full-time science fiction writer...
