- My trip to Torino was an uneasy blend of acute frustration and pleasant surprise. Ostensibly, I was there to speak on a panel at the XXIII UIA World Congress of Architecture, which - aside from being held at Fiat's legendary Lingotto factory/test track complex - was a total disaster. Really, the less said about it, the better, though I do want to thank my esteemed co-panelistas Nicolas Nova, Younghee Jung, and Jeffrey Huang for being such good sports and such great company, and Régine for furnishing the happiest 12.5% of our audience.

The shame of it was that Nicolas put together a really cogent panel tying together the infrastructural, architectural and social implications of emergent ubiquitous technologies, ranging from the extravagantly frictionless "u-city" visions of East Asia to the ultra-high-density slums of India. (You can see low-resolution video of Jef's talk here, Younghee's here; my own spiel is here.) From where I was sitting, anyway, the session was an excellent introduction to the primary issues and considerations involved in our willy-nilly deployment of ubiquitous technologies in the urban context, and I sure hope each and every one of the eight people in the room found something of value in it.

The unexpected upside of being in Torino (apart, that is, from the sheer and considerable pleasure of wandering a beautiful city with Jef, Younghee and Nicolas) was my entirely fortuitous blundering into the Frontiers of Interaction conference. To be honest, I hadn't quite registered what it was or that it was happening, so you can only imagine how gobsmacked I was when, jetlagged, I followed Younghee's texted directions to the venue: Elizabeth Churchill! Bruce Sterling! It was like Old Home Week or something.

Beyond the fact that there's clearly some top-notch interaction design work going on in the Piemonte, Frontiers had impeccable taste in invitees - I was flattered when, upon tottering into the room, organizer Leandro Agrò insisted on shoehorning me into an already-packed schedule. I gave an off-the-cuff version of my City talk, and hopefully acquitted myself honorably. Given what a fiasco the Congress turned out to be, too, I have to say that I am hugely grateful to have had the chance to present this material to an audience both sizable and primed to engage with it.

Note well that Frontiers - despite being by far the humbler and more punk-rock of these two events - was many orders of magnitude better organized than the Congress; was presented in a more sensible venue; and manifestly offered its speakers (and, I'd hazard, its attendees) more engagement, more value, and more fun. Thanks to Leandro and his Frontiers crew, to Mark from Experientia for being such an indefatigable guide to lovely Torino, and to Liz, Bruce and Jasmina for being the surprise in this particular box of life's Cracker Jacks. Without you, my trip would have been a frustrating mess, so xoxoxoxo and all that, in spades.

I think we'd already ceased to worry overmuch about daily QOL - after all, this is the city we both fell in love with during the few golden days of Aula 2006 - but this trip convinced us that Helsinki life's gonna be fun.

Some of its oddness, obviously, comes from the fusion of bureaucratese and Konglish in which it's couched, but I think the balance of the frisson I get from it is down to something else entirely. I'm thinking of it as a weak signal from one possible future-becoming-present, one in which the scale-free generative modeling processes we've lately fallen for are mated to the very ambitious ab initio development programs we're starting to see in places like the UAE and the PRD.

If such a contingency came to pass, I'd imagine its characteristic artifacts would be things just like this: RFPs, in effect, for rapid-fab Lego cities, readymade to plug into existing service infrastructures.

It's not that such a scenario is entirely incapable of being handled intelligently; I think of some of the smarter work in Typological Formations, a neat volume I picked up last week at Architectura & Natura, as exemplary in this regard. But oh, I can also see way too much potential for misery in these self-consciously generic urbanized fields - I mean, they're not even really "cities" anymore, are they? - and the correspondingly anomic quality of life I'd imagine going hand-in-glove with any large-scale procedural rhetoric of composition. (Residents? Any, y'know, culture they might tend to accrete around them? Modular, entirely fungible.)

Now, I'd be willing to bet that peak oil is going to set real limits on this kind of hubris long before us mere critics need to worry about its implications for the texture of everyday life. But then I've been wrong before.

By taking this one quote, very much out of context, he's making it seem as if I'm somehow arguing against the very thing I've spent much of my career trying to support, which is the central role of the trained designer in improving user experience. He also seems to believe I would somehow underwrite the essential vacuity of the consultant class, when nothing could be further from the truth.

I'm upset at this sort of cherry-picking simply because it's intellectually dishonest, of course. But more broadly, the entire piece portrays Poynor as some kind of Lone Gunslinger fighting the good fight, when the reality is that there are plenty of people struggling right alongside him to achieve the same ends.

For the record (though it will seem laughably redundant to anyone who knows me well, like insisting I really do like Citroëns, or gin and tonics, or Jane Jacobs): I regard "innovation" as an all-but-meaningless buzzword, "design thinking" as weak sauce indeed, and design itself as an indispensible desideratum in the genesis of humane products, systems and services. As I have fought and fought hard for these values, publicly, prominently, and at not-insignificant cost to my career and prospects, I very much resent any implication that I have ever either believed or acted any differently.

UPDATE: Ah, sorry. For those of you who don't know who Rick Poynor is: among critics of graphic design, he's definitely counted one of the usual suspects.

The source of my present irritation is the various pod-based coffee machines that have rapidly become universal in the European hospitality industry, and are making clear inroads on this side of the Atlantic.

People complain that Starbucks is hegemonic, but in fact you do generally have a choice of caffeine providers, whether you're in Regent Street, on the Boul' Mich, or stumbling into the merciless light of another Kreuzberg day. Stay in a hotel in any of those cities, though, and what you're likely to be confronted with upon making your way down to breakfast is one of these disgruntling units.

I thoroughly decry & bewail them. I'm not blind to the economies involved, nor to the burden of prep and cleaning and general mess-surveillance lifted from the shoulders of staff, as if by magic, when you choose to deploy one of these beasties. But let's face it: have you ever had even a halfway-decent cup of coffee out of these things?

What they pump is invariably a kind of weak ersatz, a coffee analogue with distinct wartime-austerity notes that might strike me as eminently satisfying if I'd been, say, huddled in a stinking, freezing Sarajevo basement for three months, under intermittent sniper fire, but certainly not under any other conceivable circumstances.

Surprising as it may seem, I'm not just ranting for the toothsome pleasure of it. There's a clear user-experience lesson here. Because both portion control and process are so obsessively pre-calibrated - one might say seamless - there's just no hinge or fold in the flow of things, no place for the user to reach into the experience and tune it to their liking. You can neither increase the dosage of grounds submitted to the brewing process nor reduce the amount of water pumped through them. Nor, of course, can you monkey with any of the other variables so critical to finding one's own pleasure in the coffee experience, like timing and temperature. And for me, anyway, the result is inevitably a nice big cup of FAIL.

The question for hospitality providers is this: is the undeniable convenience of pod-brewed coffee sufficient justification for delivering a substandard experience to your guests? I would hope that there would be different answers to this question depending on whether the establishment in question is a youth hostel or a spendy boutique hotel. (And top marks to the Hotel Guldsmeden for serving bottomless pots of the real deal - in Erik Magnussen's iconic Stelton jug, of course.)

Let this deeply unsatisfactory technology propagate through the world for a few more years, too, in domestic environments as well as institutional, and I can easily enough imagine that there will be those who have only ever been exposed to podsourced "coffee," who simply won't have a frame of reference for the richness and raw power they're missing out on. Until that black (or not-nearly-black-enough) day dawns, though, some of us still know the difference.

What I wanted to do with it was admittedly odd, and in some lights almost Lovecraftian in its perversity: I wanted to take this gorgeous frame - painstakingly optimized in every respect for one role and one riding posture - and force it to different ends, making of it a monstrous hybrid. Not this kind, mind you, nor even this one, but some unholy fusion of stripped-down NYC messenger steed and easy-going Dutch city bike.

This I planned to do by replacing the aggressive bullhorns and their forward-reaching stem with upright cruiser bars, and the carefully ergoanatomic seat with a fully-sprung Brooks saddle. The result, in theory, would have afforded me the more relaxed cockpit, improved overview on traffic, and different kind of riding experience I was looking for, while still allowing me to take advantage of the frame's basic lightness and responsiveness. But as the component costs, complexity, and associated labor bill all began to peak, reason quailed, the project logic collapsed, and the timeless order of the spheres reasserted itself. More precisely, it was Nurri who did so. And what she asked was this: Who breaks a butterfly on a wheel?

Who throws a stolid Brooks onto a bike so designed around weight savings that it sports carbon-fiber forks? Who tries to undo a logic so deep it runs down to the bikeular DNA, and overmaster it with kludged-on parts and geometries? Nobody sane, that's for sure.

Especially not when this waits at the front of the shop, with a lower pricetag than the components alone would have set me back. This, my friends, is Kona's $300 Africabike 3.0.

The Africabike is a veritable tank among rides. Formally, anyway, it resembles what a Soviet factory might have turned out if ordered to reproduce the classic Dutch bicycle exactly. It weighs, oh, let's just say twice what the Capo does. And calling it the "OLPC of bikes" is actually an unwonted compliment to the computer: unlike the OLPC, Kona's bike was designed with one specific and concrete mission in mind, by which all of its features and material qualities were dictated, and at which it has demonstrably succeeded. What it mostly shares with the OLPC, actually, is the fundamental two-for-oneness of its purchase proposition: you buy one here, and its twin is donated to an HIV/AIDS prevention worker in sub-Saharan Africa (and latterly, Afghanistan).

All this would only go so far toward recommending it, frankly, if it were not also one hell of a lot of fun to ride. Everything that fits this vehicle for harsh African duty winds up rendering it an unexpected blast on New York City streets, from the oversized, puncture-resistant tires to a diamond-hatched saddle so ass-friendly you can easily imagine it furnishing Graceland. And, indeed, you ride like a king, or the King: up high, outlook wide, low tension, movin' easy. It's not at all the same kind of visceral kick that I get from breaking traffic on the Capo, but it is a simple and a solid hoot, conveying to the rider just about everything that made bikes fun as a kid. And while I'm perfectly willing to bet you'd get the same kind of experience from, say, a Jorg & Olif Scout, that'd set you back more than twice as much, and you wouldn't have the satisfaction of knowing that you'd made some contribution, however humble, to HIV prevention efforts where they're most acutely needed.

I haven't owned a bike with coaster brakes (or a kickstand, for that matter) since I was eight, so it was kind of a shock to contemplate welcoming the Africabike into our household. But that's just what we eventually decided to do. The Cannondale gets to remain what it is: lightweight, austere urban transit, a bike so fleet that I've ridden duathlons on it single speed or no. I get my city-bike experience, plus some, when that's what I want. And I've helped to ensure that, somewhere in the global South, someone brave is that much better equipped to reach the villages, to teach the people they meet about HIV and how best to avoid it. It's kind of a win-win-win.

And now, if you'll excuse me, I do believe I'm going for a ride.

Lookit: if you're going to call it a "go bag," make sure you know what you're talking about. These are not go bags.

A proper "go bag" (also known as a "bug-out bag") has to hold enough gear to protect and sustain you under uncertain conditions for no less than 72 hours. You can go all OCD parsing things out into modular A-, B- and C-loads if you want to, varying them by expected duration and mission, but that's the nub of it.

Packing lists will vary by locale, terrain, and personal preference, and you'll find ostensibly comprehensive and authoritative ones all over the Web. I have no intention of adding to them. If you're serious about putting any such bag together, though, and intend to rely on it for real, please please please consider the following:

- You will need more socks than you think - like, double the amount. Two pair/person/day, at an absolute minimum. Polypro is acceptable, good ol' fashioned wool arguably better. The old drill-sergeant saw is absolutely on the money: take care of your feet and they will take care of you. This is not the place to economize.

- I strongly recommend using dry bags, like these. There are many on the market, some better than others. The important things you're looking for: transparent, hermetic seal, available in a variety of sizes. You will sort all of your smaller gear into these and you will label them with their contents and date last checked.

- Dummy cords. These are simply lengths of standard OD nylon para cord ("550 cord") that you'll cut to size, fuse the ends of, and use to tie items like your knife and your flashlight to tie-off points on the bag itself. Yes, some care must be taken to avoid entanglement, but this will keep you from losing these high-value items in the dark or in emergent situations. I cannot overemphasize the value of dummy cording: it's saved my ass many times.

- My personal opinion? Forget anything with a battery. Hand-crank radios and flashlights are preferable.

- You'll want maps of your area at multiple scales. In the States, you're looking for USGS topo maps; in the UK, I'm pretty sure Ordnance Survey still makes the ones you'll want. Laminate each, pop a hole in one corner, clip them together with a keyring or similar, dummy-cord a grease pencil to the ring and the ring to your bag.

- Don't get fancy with knives, etc. Find out what operators recommend (or EMS personnel if for whatever reason you want to avoid the military resonances) and go with that - these recommendations will still be a matter of opinion, but it will be informed opinion. You want functional, not Rambo (and god help us, not Klingon).

- A couple of good, real, climbing-rated carabiners will always prove useful; if clanking is an issue for you, you can tape them down. (For that matter, a roll of subdued gaffers-type tape should be a part of any go bag.)

- Obtain copies of your birth certificate, passport photo page, driver's license, deed of ownership or title, insurance policy, etc. Laminate these, seal them in a dry envelope, attach a strip of Velcro to the back, and physically attach it to the bottom of your bag.

- The standard-issue US Army poncho liner was the single best piece of gear I ever managed to lay my hands on, and I hear the Thinsulate ones are even better. It's lightweight, highly packable and incredibly versatile, useful for many, many things, up to and including improvised shelter.

- I hate to be the one to say it, but this seems like sexy vaporware, not anything you'd want to rely on. Anyway, what do you need a sniper mat for?

- Do not be afraid to personalize your kit. I can tell you from personal experience that you will be infinitely thankful for the reassurance and psychological cushioning that comes from having some small and familiar comfort to draw on at difficult moments - an icon or fetish, worry beads, whatever. It shouldn't be large or heavy, of course, but you'll need something beyond iron rations to sustain you psychically in the event of your world turning upside down. I used to pack (don't laugh) a faintly lavender-scented buckwheat-filled eyemask in my deployment bag. It was a tiny but concrete and verifiable piece of sanity, and it saw me through some very trying times in the field.

- This last bit is crucial, but surprisingly often overlooked: don't spend a month and $500 at REI building up your über-1337 go bag and then stash it in the lightless depths of your closet; conversely, don't raid it for camping supplies or Burning Man or what-have-you. Make it up once, store it in such a way that it's handy to your most likely route of egress, and check it quarterly. You might even want to gin up a packing list, laminate that, Velcro it to the inside top flap, and then check your bag's contents against it on a reasonably regular basis.

That's about all I have to say on the subject. It's a difficult thing to talk about, actually. Having lived through the Oakland Hills fire, I've seen how very quickly it can all go away, right down to the basic infrastructure. I definitely believe that everyone should be prepared to go wheels-up on ten minutes' notice, and be capable of subsisting unaided for three days when they get to a place of safety. But it's also all too easy to geek out on this stuff, to wind up inadvertently fetishizing disaster, catastrophe and heartbreak.

So try to remember that this isn't about playing Sekrit Ninja. It's about being able to take minimal care of yourself under circumstances that, however hard to imagine, are never all that far away from any one of us. Provide for yourself, and you'll be that much more likely to survive with life, limb and sanity intact, and that much better equipped to care for the others who will surely need it. That's it. No need to make a big deal of it.

It's a simple shift with profound implications for how we experience cities, and I'm definitely having fun exploring those. (Surprisingly, that's been the primary valence of my writing these last few weeks: fun.) But it's also reminding me of one of my major fantasies, at the age of 12 or 13, which was to have poste restante left for me c/o the local American Express office, the way a Paul Bowles or a Graham Greene protagonist might have, in Saigon or Tangiers.

This is a useful skill to have, surely, and such people are a vital part of any project team. But in my experience, it's striking how very rarely people whose primary talent has to do with the accurate assessment of pathology are actually any good at fixing it.

To some degree, I include myself in the above category, which is why I can easily imagine that it must be sort of a sad and frustrating place to find yourself - knowing that you're an ace at spotting other people's errors, without being at all sure that you can affirmatively produce meaning and beauty in your own work.

The lesson I've learned from working with people like this that their manager has to find the proper role for them, has to make sure that their talent is harnessed, their perspicacity is acknowledged, and that they're offered ample opportunities for professional growth and development. (Who knows? They might find in time that they're actually able to execute at the same level of refinement they routinely expect of others.)

But they also need to be buffered somehow, because most people (and certainly most institutions) are incapable of delivering to the stratospheric standards your average diagnostician regards as eminently reasonable. They might be correct in their critique, but they're not going to be useful. And if there's anything I've learned in the unruly course of my career, it's that insisting on a position simply for the sake of being able to say that you were right all along does not make for excellent work.
