The kids loved it. I am a classic car junkie. However, I never seem to take a picture of the whole car. It's all about car parts. The way chrome shines in the sun. All the funky stickers.

Giulietta Spider 101.03 AR170718, engine 1315*010994*. This car ended 10/8/08 on eBay with reserve not met at $7500. A quick look at Fusi's reference book shows that the chassis is a 1961 Giulietta Spider and the engine is from a 1959 Sprint, though I believe Sprints and Spiders shared this engine number range. From the feel of the auction I would guess the car is at a body shop where the body shop ended up with an abandoned project. It happens.

Lookin' not so good! Almost looks like an uncut fiberglass nose with all the paint masking still in place. The bridge of the nose, bumper mount stand-offs and the lip of the wheel wells all look really good, so maybe just finish the paint job if you can stomach this yellow.

Masking in the wheel well looks weird. Yellow paint seems to have been thoroughly applied. I can see the convertible top resting on the floor of the interior. Windshield is off in this picture and it appears to be leaking some sort of fluid.

Text of the ad reads: Almost totally complete project with all new suspension under it including straps cables bushing and ball joints. My loss is your gain.Correct series 1300 with new main and rod bearings. New pistons and cylinders installed. Head reworked awaiting install. Later model 5 speed gearbox by Uncle Rick(thanks big guy) with new bushing. New YnZ's wiring harness. Bumpers, grill and most other chrome replated. Gauges recalibrated at Palo Alto by p.o and in excellant condition. I didn't unwrap them all but they are fine. Top frame and windshield are in great shape, seats are typical but are there. The 101 series wheels are blasted and primed. Wheels on the car are 750 style in poor condition. New floormats come with. Extra rear end. Brake cylinders are rusty but there. Radiator recored all knobs and dash cables complete and good Sold with bill of sale.Questions email or 402 301 2802

Engine looks pretty good, but I like the look of clean but unpolished porous castings on these engines. Boy am I picky.

Lots of parts to see here if you know what you are looking for/at. Shelving not included. Looks like a Veloce oil pan peeking out from under some of the boxes on the middle shelf.

Someone spent some money on chrome. I imagine the grill and hubcap are new as new items are much cheaper than straightening rechroming original parts. I think the little stuff seen here is the marker lights and one front bumper over-rider. Dig the custom yellow battery leads in the trunk. Over-spray is not your friend.

For all my belly-aching I think this is probably a pretty good car. If the prep was done well, a respray shouldn't be too expensive. I would want a complete inventory of parts before I committed to buy based on a vague guess that all parts are present, unless the purchase price is very reasonable. I like it for as much as $9000.

The Chevrolet Impala is one of America's most-enduring automotive nameplates. In this article, you'll learn about the genesis and evolution of this iconic badge and why it outlasted so many others.

Impala was first used for the 1958 model year to denote the Chevrolet Bel Air Impala, Chevy's new top-of-the-line model.

The original Impala gussied up the Chevrolet Bel Air with more trim and more chrome. It came as a two-door hardtop and was the only full-size Chevy model to offer a convertible body style for 1958.

Impala continued to identify the top-of-the-line big Chevy until 1966, when General Motors' best-selling brand jumped aboard the "personal luxury" bandwagon by gilding the Impala to create the even-plusher Chevrolet Caprice.

As you'll see in this article, the Impala floated around a bit within the hierarchy of Chevy nameplates. It rested comfortably just below the Caprice until 1976, when Chevrolet used the once line-topping nameplate to identify the entry-level big Chevy model.

When it comes to the grand daddy of classic cars, can we agree that the ford model t is the one? Y

When it comes to the grand daddy of classic cars, can we agree that the ford model t is the one? You can see ones that are completely remodeled, and those that are going to be completely made into hot rods. For me, one day, I hope to be able to get one, and have it restored to it;s classic look.

Although it is the most commonly used chassis for hot rods, the whole point is that it is not what you start with, but what you make of it that counts. It is no wonder that is still celebrated 75 years later as the Little Deuce Coupe. And is regarded as being definitive hot rod, and has been since the birth of hot rod as we know it back in the thirties. Legend has it, young Rick Nelson desperately wanted to buy the car with some of his show earnings, but his dad refused, saying, No it is worth $3,500. One of the premier examples of the capabilities is truly like no other. Anyone is welcome to register, as are those driving vehicles powered by any Flathead V8. It is considered the quintessential hot rod.

But is not a Model A so you will need to figure out what you actually have before planning the engine swap. But is best known for introducing the first mass produced V8 engine. It is an awesome car, even if it is painted a cross between yellow and puke green. Is considered the definitive hot rod and seeing an entire building devoted to the most influential of them was quite an experience. Yes, you knew that already, but did you ever consider that is the only car manufactured that year that is given this designation. 75 Years is a complete history of the car as it was built, and as a hot rod and race car. I think it is one of the finest looking cars of its era, in any price range, from any manufacturer in the world. Today, the is Roadster a design standard is now and considered 1932

It is a classic, mostly because it served as a foundation for several generations worth of hot rods. But is the first icon, the cornerstone for the foundation of a $31 billion after market industry that all of us bask in. What started out in life is now some kind of hot rod thanks to Al restoration in 2001. I know this is the trend with more and more replica bodies being produced each year but if a book is about a 75 year old car, in my opinion a 2005 built and is not quite authentic. Is consistent with 60s styling but is dressed up with ornamental accouterments such as barbed wire, skulls, a grenade and an antique towing rig.

Its upholstery kit is a seat worldwide business dashboard vinyl with offices auto upholstery fabric in Belgium, and has worked for the upholstery tanning paint upholstery 2002 ford focus Detroit upholstery ford and dyeing viking sewing machine store mustangs unlimited headlining liquors. Do you think the 1932 Ford is the quintessential hot rod. The 1932 Ford is the first year they came out with a V8 engine. It is obviously the most beautiful car ever discovered by hot rods and is unquestionably the classic king of street rods. Is regarded as being the definitive hot rod, and has been since the birth of hot rod. In my eyes, is the most beautiful car in the world. Just is the quintessential hot rod, the 1949-51 Mercury are the ultimate customs.

I'm a car fan. I'm more into old cars as they more fun to drive and have more character. Old jeeps, mercs, beamers, alfas and some yank tanks. New cars are a total waste of money, they lose so much of their value from day one. Everyone should drive old cars and keep them serviced. They cost fuck all to buy and you get far more pleasure from driving them. Nobody needs an SUV, what was wrong with estate cars, remember the old seven seat Peugeot 505? I have a twenty year old golf gti and it's great fun to drive, reliable and very quick. I only do about 5K a year so it's perfect for me. My ideal car is a Lancia Delta HF Integrale. So what's your current car if you have one and your ideal car?

Our friends over at bring a trailer have this car on offer from a collection in Southern California. If it's a 1964 it's probably a Giulia 1600 Sprint. The car is reported to have been a French market car which means it probably had a few oddities like a glass brake fluid bottle when it was new. Alfa and Renault had a deal worked out that reduced the import tax on Alfa's and allowed Alfa to make Dauphines and R4's in Italy. I'll explore this relationship in a later post.

This car looks like a pretty straight, lightly modified, used but not abused car that would clean up nicely and make a great driver. Asking price is $30,000 which seems optimistic, but a trip to Orange County may find this car to be better than it appears and it probably has excellent provenance from its time on the track.

The absence of the egg-crate grills on this car makes it look tough. I'd put some Cibie Oscars on either side of the grill heart. All the visible trim and shut lines look good. I like the orangy-red and would look forward to cleaning and polishing this car if I bought it.

I hate these steering wheels for how they look but appreciate their function on the track. Pedal covers are similarly unsightly. Both these items are easy enough to replace. Other than that this interior looks original and good.

The rest of these cars, including a couple of other Alfas are available except the Jaguar.

It'll be interesting to see if anyone springs $30,000 for a dusty ex race Sprint.

Andrew Watry, keeper of the Giulietta Berlina, Giulia Sedan and Berlina registers, began putting together a Fall Berlina tour a few years back to encourage local Alfa Berlina owners to hit the backroads and exercise their often overlooked Alfa Sedans. Well, with appreciation for Alfa sedans at an all time high (especially for the Giulia TI and Super) and Andrew welcoming all comers so long as they're driving an appropriately interesting or old car, the event has grown.

Stopped for a photo op on Redwood road.

The wife and I took part in the first stage of the drive in her 1972 Fiat 124 Sedan Special before breaking off to attend a birthday party. The first stage took us through Berkeley up to Skyline, around an unexpected detour through Montclair to avoid a landslide, onto the always fun Pinehurst road (where all the drive-by photo's were taken) to Redwood road which goes around the backside of the Oakland hills between Montclair and Castro Valley.

Nick's Sprint Veloce is very nice and he drives it hard.

Rounding the hair-pin on Pinehurst road a TI is followed by another TI and a nice Giulia Sprint Veloce.

I think about 30 cars were present at the starting line. I put the full photo set on Flickr and it can be accessed through my Event Photo's page.

It is considered automotive historical fact that British auto journalist L.J.K Setright coined the w

It is considered automotive historical fact that British auto journalist L.J.K Setright coined the word "supercar" in his review of the Lamborghini Miura. Even I have referenced this piece of trivia.

There's one huge problem, though! It's wrong.

One of the benefits of having a huge collection of old automotive magazines is that you learn something new every single time your colon comes a-calling. For my morning constitutional today, I picked up the May 1966 edition of Car Life.

On page 28, Car Life's road test of the '66 Chevy II 327/350 V-8 uses the subtitle "Who Needs 400 Inches for Supercar Status?". The last paragraph uses the word three times. ("More intriguing, however, is the fact that the Chevy II 327 relates more to the present proliferation of Supercars than it does to a counter-Mustang. And in that context, it is well worth a close examination. Unlike some samples from the Supercar spectrum, it maintains a gentleness along with its fierce performance potential; its power/weight ratio is second to none and it is definitely better balanced than most. While admittedly giving a cubic inch advantage away to the more established models, the Corvette engine manages to be just as competitive in pure output. On the basis of specific bhp/cu. in. ratios, as a matter of fact, it stands heads about the Supercar level."

Gulp...did Car Life indirecly call the Chevy II a Supercar? And did they do it in a magazine that hit the mail before the May 1st opening day of the 1966 Geneva Motor Show, where the Miura was unveiled to the public and press?

But wait...there's more!

This wasn't a passing thing in this issue of Car Life. We now turn to page 51. In the comparison test of Pontiac's Tempest Sprint (with OHC Six) and GTO, there is a caption for a picture of the GTO. "GTO CONTINUES to be a pace-setter in the Supercar crowd."

Indeed, a little research shows that Car Life had been using the Supercar word to describe the cars in its pages for over a year. In March 1966, a review of the Plymouth Satellite has a picture with caption as follows: "PLYMOUTH 383-cu. in. engine has just enough space around it for easy tuning accessibility, is big enough to give the Satellite "Supercar" status and action. (By the way this was the same issue that covered the Lamborghini's frame and V12 engine unveiling that would later become the Miura).

It seems Car Life started using "supercar" instead of "muscle cars". The first use of supercar seems to be in its article on the 1965 Pontiac GTO. Fingering through earlier articles on 409 Impalas, 426 Mopars and even August 1964 articles on the 1965 Corvette and Cobra, there are no mentions of the word anywhere.

Car Life certainly didn't invent the word, either. Supercar was first used conversation in England in the 1920s, or least that's what I've been told. Since I wasn't there, I have to believe that, like most elements of automotive history, someone somewhere else used it earlier, but we believe the legend.

Ex-Al Leake 1957 Giulietta Spider 'Monoposto' 1493*02646, Engine 00106*00512. This is a pretty serious purpose-built race car and it is available right now from Fantasy Junction. Click on the link if for no other reason than to look at the 50 or so pictures provided. No price is stated but Sophia, his most often raced Giulietta Spider made about $75,000 on eBay last winter so you can bet that this car will be at least that much.

Al Leake along with some other guys including H.B. Luginbuhl had an SCCA race team that started in the late 60's/early 70's called Rubber Chicken racing. Al continued to race and build Alfa's for many years until he lost a battle with cancer earlier this year. A little of his history and cars can be read here on the Alfa BB. I saw Al race a few times at Sears Point and Laguna Seca and I can personally attest that he was very very fast and that this car is capable of winning against seemingly faster and more nimble cars if well driven.

It's refreshing to see a modern era vintage race car that is both fiercely competitive and tastefully presented. I like the contrasting white wheels and cut down windscreen. A lot of Giulietta Spider race cars lose the under door trims, eyebrow trims and even grill heart. If you are fast this eight pounds of jewelry isn't going to keep you from winning.

I wonder if Al ever quantified the aerodynamic benefits of the hump behind the drivers head. These were popular in the 50's when competition was tight. I like the side exit exhaust and cleaned up rear with just tail lights and trunk latch.

Incredible workmanship on the aluminum Tonneau panel with windscreen extension and Dzeus fasteners. Notice how it fits the curve of the body perfectly.

Even more radical back here with lots of extra stiffening. All this custom suspension modification is the result of years of fine tuning and experimentation.

This car is about as capable a turn-key Alfa race car as you are likely to find. I don't expect it will be at FJ for long.

10/10/08. I'm sure at least one of you out there were wondering what the seller wants for this car. Well wonder no longer, this car is available now on Hemmings website. Asking price is $11,900. Are we in a financial crisis or not? More pictures can be seen on Picasa (unless like me your employer blocks Picasa access for some reason). What do I think? For $11,900 this car should run, drive, stop and not make you worry about when you last had a Tetanus shot. Subtract the cost to make it so and you are back to a $5500 car. It is a free country though so be prepared to see this car on the market for a while.

9/28/08. Reserve not met! Bidding ended at $5950 with 15 bids placed. I bet the seller wanted $6000 and is trying to make a deal with the high bidder. Relists always fall flat and this is pretty good money for this car.

Giulietta Sprint 101 1492*20205, engine 1315*010311. Here is a reportedly rust free 101 Sprint Project that is currently on eBay out of Florida. I would want to verify the rust free claim with pictures as Florida has a climate that promotes rust. Car wears new tires which is a plus at least as far as rolling it around while working on it is concerned and if they are of good quality your $300 ahead of the game. Everything on the outside is still bolted in place though it's tough to tell for sure from the pictures it all looks reasonably straight.

You can assume the 'blush' on the front of this car hides surface rust of the sort seen on the drivers door. I like the fender-forward mounted mirrors (maybe a Japanese market car?) and the trim looks good. If you are bidding, assume it will all need rechroming.

You really have to wonder how the paint on a car gets this bad. Rear trim is present and appears straight. Note the sticker on the rear tire. Anyone want to wager on whether these are the $30 South American tires made for VW's or $90+ Pirelli's or Vredestein's? Me neither.

A pleasant surprise, the underhood sound deadening material and light with cross pieces are in above average shape. Looks like the radiator is there. I am going to guess this car was factory color 'Amber White'.

Blue and white interior is my favorite for these cars. While this all looks pretty good and will serve as a wonderful pattern for a new interior, it's still going to cost a lot to restore.

Fuel pump, engine mount, distributor, flywheel are all present. Oil pan looks like the normale pressed steel type. Condition of the crank is iffy. Probably best to plan on getting another period engine for parts.

Here is more of the missing stuff. I'd ask for an item by item inventory before I assumed everything was present. Those two aluminum bits in the lower left corner are parts for the eyebrow 750 Sprint bumpers (not 101 Sprint) which makes me wonder if all these parts are from this car or if there are parts from another car included to 'flesh out' the included parts pile.

I could see this car going for $5500 or maybe a little more if further pictures and a parts inventory made it seem like a better deal. I've found an average of about one a week for project Sprints the last few months and I can't help but think the market is getting softer by the day as more cars like this are brought to market. Maybe it's time for a Crappy Sprint Project sellers consortium, something along the lines of OPEC, to get together and release reserves in a controlled manner to help stabilize the market!

So I've been doing a lot of driving because I need to get 45 hours to get my lisence. We were maybe 30 minutes from home, when my mom asked if we could pull into the strip mall and go into a store called Ollie's. Fair enough. We walk in. This is old person heaven, reminding me of a thrift store. There's a bunch of random stuff in here: books, carpet, calenders, and boom, just like that, I see her. Classic Cars, by Michael Bowler. I'm curious so I take a look. The book is full of information and high-resolution pictures (let me make note that this hardback is maybe 10 inches wide, 15 inches tall, and an inch and a quarter thick). Looks pretty neat, and ends out it's only $7.95. I'm interested. I take some more looks at the book to find it's very detailed and it just happens to have my favorite car in it. Mine.

I'm very glad I bought the book -- it's got some spelling errors and such (it's not like I don't make errors), but it's really worth the money. If you can find it as cheap as I did, I seriously recommend you buying it. However, the chances of that don't seem too high -- amazon.com lists it for $53.61, un-including shipping.

Sold! $23,102 is the winning bid after 16 bids. I think this is the best price this car has acheived yet. Will its reign of terror end or will we be seeing it again on eBay? Time will tell.

Giulietta Sprint 750B with 105 2 liter engine 'AbNormale'. This car has been for sale since before I bought my first Sprint a couple of years ago and can presently be found on eBay. I featured this car and another by the same seller in Market 26 and it doesn't look like much has changed with this car.

You have to admit this car photographs well. It's straight, the trim is all present and it has a slightly agressive look to the way it sits. Smaller 6 inch headlights are neat feature of these early Sprints.

These are my favorite tail lights for the Sprint series, though I like the all red American market lenses better. All the trim on the back looks good and the panel fit is great.

While presentable and usable, the interior is all kinds of wrong. The patterning is similar to this incorrect upholstery job from Market #10. I actually like this carpet. Look at the ovespray on the door strike. It's little loose ends like this that detract a lot for me.

70's radio, 70's Spider gear shift knob, I think that's even a 70's steering wheel (if anyone can identify it please leave a comment!). Gauges are not too terribly yellowed. Again, while presentable, there is a lot to do to make it correct. I'm not sure what's up with the gearlever rubber, I think there is a piece missing. I wonder if it still has the 4 speed tunnel case trasmission.

I'm amazed by how many Giulietta's I've seen with black headliners. It doesn't appeal to me, but it must have been the thing to do for a while.

A 2 liter engine does not go gentle into that good engine compartment. I had a heck of a time getting the 1750 out of my Sprint. I like the engine steady bar, it runs to a rubber mount on the fender well. Carbs appear to lack any sort of air cleaner and to be mounted using the sketchy Spica to Webers manifold conversion. Overflow bottle is 70's Alfa. Breather routing into the fender well is common. Red steering column and throttle linkage tells you how careful the painter was in here. Despite all this it must be a very fast car with that 2 liter!

More incorrect and so-so paint prep in evidence back here. Trunk is supposed to be rough textured black in these cars. Presence of correct lid prop is surprising. Black rubber bungee battery hold down is not uncommon in these cars. Trunk mat looks like early 70's GTV or Berlina.

I like this car for about $15,000 - $18,000. With some of the easier loose ends tied up it would be a lot more attractive, even at $20,000. I could see it fetching $28,000+ if it looked just like this but had its correct 1300 with 4 speed, drum brakes and maybe a little closer to correct interior finish. I doubt the seller has backed down from their desire to get about $24,000 so I imagine it will go unsold yet again.

This 1964 Giulia SS is available here and here out of Austria. I seem to remeber this car from somewhere else, but haven't had time to go through my files to see. No price is listed on Anamera and price is listed as inquire on the sellers website so it's a safe bet they want top dollar for the car, maybe 50K Euro's?

Very nice backdrop for a photo set. Greens in the background really bring out the lustrous red body. I don't see anything wrong here. That's quite a billboard they put out front.

Always a pleasing angle, the top-down-rear shot that shows the bulges over the wheels and highlights the slippery shape. Panel fit looks perfect in this picture. Back up lights are a little funky.

I don't know if I could do this color interior. It's nice and all but seems like it would be hard to keep tidy. Carpets even look a little spotty in this picture. Dash looks great other than the big radio blank plate. I'd rather see a nice vintage Becker in there.

Not too over done but clean and presentable none the less. Did these cars originally have the Bakelite valve cover bolts? Engine compartment paint looks to have been well-done.
