Where exactly did July go? It's been an amazing month, and I have been all over the world...literally! Here are some of the highlights:

***Having an authentic ham and cheese crepe on the Champs Elysees at 1am with a handful of special people that just happened to be in Paris at the same time, then hanging out at an underground club acting silly.

***Seeing cool landmarks like The Eiffel Tower, The Louve, The Notre Dame Cathedral, The Siene River and The Arc de Triumph.

***Waking up in France, having lunch in Monaco, and going to sleep in Italy.

***Seeing the beautiful countryside of Tuscany, and exploring the old towns of Volterra and Gimignano.

***Having a private tour of the Sassicaia Winery and Vineyard, which is closed to the public. A small, very basic family operation that changed the way of wine production in Italy, this wine has won numerous awards over the years and is known as one of the few "Super Tuscans".

***Seeing Michaelangelo's David, Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper, and The Mona Lisa.

***Searching for the perfect thin crust pizza in Italy.

***Partying like a rock star in St. Tropez on the 4th of July and learning the difference between a Magnum(2 bottles), Double Magnum(4 bottles), and Jeroboam(6 bottles).

***Relaxing in the quiet little seaside town of Portofino at the hillside Splendido Hotel, where the view is amazing and the have the best spaghetti I have ever tasted.

***Walking/Hiking 8 miles through Cinque Terre (5 lands), a small group of 5 small fishing villages on the coastline in a National Park.

***Exploring all the nooks and crannies of Venice, Italy and wondering aimlessly through the cobble stone streets. Having drinks at The Gritti Palace, visiting one of the most famous squares in the world ( Piazza San Marco), and shopping in Rodeo-like shops of Chanel and Prada.

***Feeling like a Princess and taking advantage of all the amenities at The Principe Di Savoia in Milan, Italy. The hotel is one of the oldest and most recognized hotels in the city.

Family in Italy . . .

Mom and Dad, en route to Virginia Beach from Rome, have been delayed in Ramstein, Germany. Since they fly courtesy of military charter jets, it's a waiting game as active personnel get first dibs on seats. If all goes well, they'll land in Baltimore sometime this weekend and find a rental car for the ride home. Fingers are crossed they don't catch a ride and get stuck in Iceland, like last time!

Back in Rome, my sister, Christine, and her boyfriend Bobby are on their own, touring Rome again after returning from the northern coast and Cinque Terre. They leave for London tomorrow morning, where they'll spend a couple more days sightseeing before they head back to Orange County.

It's official . . . sorta

Seeing as my brown-black stray cat has a big, fluffy black tail, I've revised her name to Coco Puff.

Of course, this is all dependent on my assumption that this forlorn creature is female. I haven't seen any spray habits, and she doesn't really care to roam the 'hood and look for fights. We'll see. Maybe I'll be surprised. Coco Puff Daddy?

Today, she was waiting for me on the wall, ready for breakfast. She's become a big talker, calling for me and chattering happily when she hears the rattle of the kibble. I sense that she's lonely, and it tugs at my heart.

Vogliamo i bilanci!!!

Faraone vogliamo i bilanci!!!

When we last left our heroine (that’s me) was leaving England for Italy and she was traveling

When we last left our heroine (that's me) was leaving England for Italy and she was traveling from the dreaded Terminal 5 at Heathrow. Will her baggage make it? Yes it did! I was really worried and packed everything I could into my carry on. My sister flew into Rome to meet me and by chance we ran into each other before we even got on the Train to the main train station. Unfortunately her checked bag didn't make it :( We got on a train to Cinque Terre. We rented a room while we were there rather than staying in an apartment. It was so much cheaper and we were really pleased with the location and the room.

Me on the balcony of our room.

It rained a good portion of the first day we were there. But that didn't stop us from exploring. Umbrellas in hand we walked around Riomaggiore and over to Manarola.

It was sunny and clear the following days and we spent time walking around all 5 towns, hiking and exploring. We walked soooo much! We even hiked part of the trail along the coast.

There was also time for breaks. Cappuccino, my friend Jenn is right it IS better in Italy, pizza, pasta and desert. Neither of us was a big fan of gelato so we gave it up and shared a desert after every meal, we ate loads of tiramisu!

I did try to learn some Italian before I left, but I can not express how grateful I was that so many Italians speak some English. I felt very impoverished that I hadn't been taught another language as a child. We sat next to some Americans at lunch one day and overheard them making fun of the signage in English, it wasn't also perfect. I couldn't help but think how grateful they should be that there were signs in English at all. Most places in the US don't even offer signs in Spanish.

We followed the siesta plan, going back to our room after lunch for R&R everyday before heading out again.

Cinque Terre was beautiful, I think my favorite town was the one we stayed in Riomaggiore. The towns are very old and built on hills and we had to get used the the streets. Many aren't even wide enough for one car to drive on you must walk.

I've only been gone for a few weeks, but this page seems to have changed. Maybe I've just forgotten what it looked like before. Everything seems a little different.

I'm working on Thing 14, del.icio.us and social networking. One of the possibilities was bubbling pictures. My effort will be to show the terror I experienced when hiking in the Cinque Terre. I have a real height thing, but I do like to hike. So, we decided to hike from Riomaggiore to Corniglia, the easiest part. Well, my goodness. I clung to the cliffs and looked at the flowers as others were sauntering by. My favorite was the old man with his dog who skipped past me and said in Italian "Watch your feet." You betcha.

Now, I'm trying to get back to these 23 Things. I bubbled a photo, and see where that could be fun. The tags for photos and fun were interesting. I kept thinking about my biggest complaint about a digital camera. It doesn't take the picture that you think you are taking -- it's a moment later. So, I just keep shooting and hoping I'll get something as good as in Catch the Moment. I usually don't.

So, I googled photos, and how many million hits? I wonder how certain things get to be in the top 10. I'm afraid photos and fun are a bit too vague to be useful google searches.

This del.icio.us account may be helpful. I have a bunch of activity, poems & fingerplay ideas bookmarked at home, and yet sometimes I'm at the library and planning storytime. It'd be nice to have resources wherever I am. HMMM.

It would be very useful for our patrons because our Gates computers don't save anything. Makes me think about how I can be sharing with patrons all this stuff I'm learning.

Have to go feed the sheep. They were shorn on Wednesday, and they still don't quite recognize each other. I'm not surprised.

Part two, my friend Mary joins me and the site seeing will involve locating a beautiful Piazza and a bottle of wine. Can't wait.

I am going Italy from 09/07/08 - 09/20/08. I leave from NYC and arrive into Pisa. I may extend this to the end of September depending on my budget and other obligations.

Cinque Terre

My Italian isn't so hot great good but Cinque Terre roughly translates to 'five villages'. The five small staggered villages make up this town and has become quite the destination for Italy-lovers (aren't we all?) thanks to Rick Steves.

I would go as far to say that this my favorite spot from this vacation. The colors you find are endless; the buildings, waters, boats and flowers you walk by on your way to the train inspire you for many many (weddings) events to come. Which is why I'm going to post up two color palettes straight from the Italian coast.

Based on the hydrangea bush, with blooms larger than my head, that I passed daily, I'm feeling a wedding (on a cliff's edge) with purples, light blues and delicately placed accents would be whimsical.

Neaparat.

It's still quite flat and easy all the way to Corniglia. I find a large group of walkers looking over the ledge and of course I stop to see what they are looking at - three young men are swimming in the sea after jumping off of a cliff into the water! Just look at that drop, yikes!

I recognize them as ones I ran into during the first leg of my trip, and I stop to have my lunch while watching their antics. The water looks cool and inviting and I envy their sense of adventure and freedom. I sit by a walk that says '5 euro entrare nall via dell 'amore...siamo pazzi?!!' Which means '5 euro to enter Lover's Lane, are they crazy?' Apparently someone thought the entry was steep! I would have to agree, for only Lover's Lane it is steep, but for the whole trail it is a reasonable price.
Somewhere in the middle of the path there is a bridge hovering over a cliff overlooking the ocean - this is not for a the fainthearted! A man carries his small furry dog over the bridge, clearly the dog is (wisely) afraid of heights. The path continues flat and easy until I reach the train station below Corniglia and many, many stairs. After finding your way up the stairs a sign greets you 'You've Just walked 382 steps". Congratulations! Toward the left is the town of Corniglia, a tiny place perched high up on a cliff. I clearly remember passing someone's garden with a tree full of ripe, delicious looking lemons. They look particularly wonderful and refreshing after hiking for a few hours. When you reach an area with a restaurant go left into a small street to find a piazza with a church, a large statue and many shops and restaurants. This is a good place to stop for a drink or snack and buy a few postcards.

The most famous length of the Cinque Terre path is Via Dell'amore, or Lover's Lane, which is a short, flat stretch from Riomaggiore to Manarola. The path isn't particularly romantic, the scenery is so-so and it is often crowded, but for a couple it can be quite nice. After all, you don't want your lover to see you panting and sweating up a hill! It is worth visiting for those who can't hike or aren't properly dressed for a real trek.
A lot of the path is covered in graffiti, and instead of forbidding it, it has been embraced. Murals of love notes and paintings of faces and shapes line a long corridor.
The walk is very short and easy, perhaps 15 minutes, then you arrive in Manarola. Manarola is one of the smaller towns, with an adorable marina and surrounded by dramatic cliffs. To get to the city you must go towards the train station and go down a long, ugly tunnel. Take a left up some stairs to see a little Piazza overlooking the Marina. The path to the sea is lined in restaurants and I stop in Manarola for a Foccacia. The little shop serves foccacia, farinata and torta pasqualina, all specialities of the area. The man heats up the fresh foccacia I picked, with spinach and lots of mozzarella cheese. It is a cheap, quick lunch, about 5 euro with a drink. A poem written on butcher paper on the wall explains how foccacia is the true flavor of Liguria, with a feeling of summer sun and fragrant olive oil.
From the shop I go around the corner to get to the Cinque Terre path again.

Certainly the best way to visit the Cinque Terre is by train. The train from Genova Brignole to Riomaggiore, or any of the other cities, takes between 90 minutes and 2.5 hours. The InterCity (IC) train takes about 80 minutes, but the regional train works just as well and costs about 1/3 as much. These trains are only 4.80 euro each way, and have only second class, but they can be smelly and old. (I will post about the Italian train system later).

From the train you will pass many lovely homes. In spring their gardens are bursting with color, purple, red white, every window box is filled with blooms. It is summer now, and the gardens are still filled with beautiful flowers, Bougainvillea cover every wall and pour out onto sidewalks. The peach and beige homes contrast sharply with the green, lush gardens and bright flowers.

When you exit the train in Riomaggiore you can normally follow the crowd to the ticket office and tourist office, which will be to the right. The tourist office can be very useful, there they sell Cinque Terre passes, postcards, travel books and a few souvenirs.

The tourist office is at a little piazza, where you can find this lovely mural and places to sit. To the right from the office is the city center, and to the left begins the Via dell'amore, the first leg on the Cinque Terre path. I traveled to the city center first.

A long tunnel with a blue ceiling connects you to the city center. All along the tunnel is a mosaic made from tiles, stones and shells, showing pictures of sea life. Following the tunnel you will reach fresh air and again have a choice- right to the marina and beach, or left to the city. I followed the stairs down to the marina, hoping to see a beautiful view of the city. Down this path there is a diving center which offers kayaks for 7 euro/hour and snorkel rental for 10 euro/day as well as scuba excursions. The Cinque Terre is known to be the best place for diving in the Mediterranean, and is a protected area.

The marina is tiny, surrounded by restaurants, and boats are perched all along the sidewalk, small beach and in the limited water. Tourists climb the jetties, perhaps they are trying to spot a whale! Dolphins and whales visit the area, usually in early spring. Walking towards the jetties you again have a choice to make - hike to the nature observation point, or go down to the rocky beach. The beach is quite well attended, despite the rocks, but this isn't for me. I was feeling energetic so I started the hike up to the observation point. The walk is 25 minutes UP, and takes you above and around the beach. The walk can be a little hazardous, so like the whole path of the Cinque Terre, you should be wearing reasonable shoes and jeans if possible. In the summer it's a bit too hot for jeans though, so I carefully avoid the thistle that lines the path. Parts of the stones are broken and falling down, and the path can be very narrow in some places.

After a set of grueling steps you reach a bench and flat area which hugs the shore again. Signs indicate native plants for those naturalists who speak Italian. After a few moments you reach a refreshment point and naturalist library, the perfect lookout point for whale spotting and a good place to take a break. The wildflowers are in full bloom in late June, and I'm particularly charmed with the bright red poppies. Around the back of the naturalist library I found a bench and a little cave, lit with lamps, perfect for a little extra exploring.

Back down to the city I find many American tourists, and all the touristy things they appreciate. Signs in English say things like 'coffee to go' and 'big pizza' and I even see a self service lavanderia (laundromat), something very rare in Italy.

Through the tunnel again and back to the start of Via dell'amore, I am armed with my camera and my Cinque Terre pass. Let's go!

Gail and I arrived in Manarola at 9:30pm to rain and a hike up a steep hill with our luggage which I am very happy to have a backpack for this reason. We spent the evening unpacking and doing much needed laundry. On Sunday morning we were required to leave the hostel at 10am and could not return until 5pm. We spent the day walking to and from Riomaggiore which is the next town over. There is a wonderful walk through the Cinque Terre National park. We are staying in Manarola which is the second town from La Spezia. Our walk took us besides the Mediterranean Sea which had such a gorgeous blue green color to the water. We both love the town we are staying in and the food is amazing. We had pineapple yogurt and a chocolate pastry for breakfast, lunch consisted of Pesto Pizza also wonderful. Then we snacked on gelato. mine was more sorbet I will try the gelato tomorrow. The sun has come and gone today and the rain was here in the morning but has left for now. Sorry no pictures I am unable to upload any to this computer at the hostel. Maybe in MIlan or Prague. Tomorrow maybe consist of kayaking or at least looking at the other three towns in the Cinque Terre.

Ciao

I've just booked flights to go to Italy in mid-July. We'll be flying into Genoa, but have no idea where to stay yet. Hopefully somewhere in the Cinque Terre on the Ligurian coastline. But anywhere where we can sit and enjoy scenes like this with a glass of Prosecco or chianti, and some locally grown food. Fab! This picture is from a choir tour to the region in 2006, just before our concert in the Church in Vernazza.
