I should let you know that I'm not an expert in viral marketing, or marketing for that matter. However, I have heard things from people in the business who know a lot more than me. Common themes have emerged, though, from all the conversations I've had in terms of V.M., such as:

-It's hard to gauge what will become "viral" and what won't, so unless you have some crazy gift that allows you know what will become "cool" or take hold among the audience, then it's really impossible to plan.

-However, things that are interactive have seemed to work better, like the example I gave of Paltalk.  JibJab also produced one related to the election:

-Another option is looking for videos on YouTube that have become popular (those that relate to your product or company) and sponsor the creator, like what Dr. Pepper and Stride gum did:

This is sort of a quick response, but I hope it helps a little. If you do create something, send it over to me and I'll post it here.

It's amazing how many of us have seen the same videos... many of those videos we seem to not even remember ever watching, but we know them. It's been a fun week finding the vids for this week, too. Some of them I'd never seen or heard of, which made me feel a bit stupid like "OMG! What rock have I been under? How did I miss this!" But most of them I knew. Some of them are my new favorites, AND my kids are getting into helping me find new videos... particularly my 15-year-old who has definitely ruined me on a couple of these. AND we are all still singing Numa Numa here (of course, my children are still playing them and finding new ones).

So, on to the vids:

One of the many things I love about Weezer's video is that a lot of the viral vids are of people who have really been ripped up by commenters, fellow video-makers, comedians and Talk show hosts, etc. Now, I'm not feeling sorry for them... many of them got spots on National television, record deals, and even a spot on a Weezer video. :-D But in this video they get a chance to thumb their collective nose at their critics. I like that.

Now, I know there are TONS! of viral videos that I missed, the video is so full of them that I couldn't name them all. So here's your chance to post the missing ones, either here in the comment section or... even better... on your own blog as your own VVW post ;-)

For those who've spent the last year living as an internet hermit, Tay is a 26-year-old American Studies grad student at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities who wrote what he considered to be a serious song about racism, only for its cryptic lyrics and the accompanying promo's rather stilted nature to propel it to the status of comedy classic in record time.

You've got to hand it to the guy: he's taken the public's opinion and run with it, hopefully making a little bit of money in the process (the song is licensed under Creative Commons for non-commercial use but has been covered by some big names and used for at least one advertising campaign). Sadly, though, the rest of his songs have titles that remind me of the soundtrack to an early 90s John Hughes movie that went straight to video.

Aos iniciados, lembrem-se que não é de hoje que a banda Weezer é muito original e competente para criar seus vídeos musicais. Spike Jonze foi o responsável por vários clips da banda, como a clássica reconstrução de Happy Days em Buddy Holly, e o primeiríssimo trabalho deles em um plano-sequência genial, também dirigido por Jonze, simplesmente maravilhoso.

Continuando essa lógica de clips bons e originais, os caras compilaram uma gama enorme desses vídeos da internet, popularizados pelo YouTube, e criaram o clip da música Pork and Beans com esses "anônimos conhecidos" para a alegria de quem vive nesse ambiente virtual. O resultado é muito bacana, alguns vídeos não são tão populares no Brasil como aqueles que relembrei acima, mas muitos certamente, qualquer um que navegue e receba emails já tenham visto e revisto. O clip ficou tão bacana que até o todo poderoso Fantástico, da Globo, fez uma matéria especial sobre ele, mas era desnecessário pedir para o Nxzero reproduzir com similares brazuca... vá lá....

I'm in the mood for some summer fun! It's a sunny day in Pittsburgh and I'm feeling hopeful and inspired about starting my day. Everyday we get to wake up and see something different outside in our world. We also have the chance to set the mood of our hearts through positive thinking-- that's right YOU have a choice of how your feelings are gonna be throughout the day. Ask yourself: How much are you really gonna understand the people around you? How genuine are you gonna help a bad situation? Life is worth more than the petty things that we all tend to make a big deal about so appreciate every person's flaw and come to an understanding with one another. I want everyone who's checking out this blog to tell someone what they love and appreciate about them. It could be something simple perhaps, "I like that new haircut," "I really appreciate you giving me $.25 for the vending machine..." Remaining humble and having gratitude is how we give back to life. Sincere gratitude goes a long way and there's nothing corny about appreciate our short time on this universe. Life has blessed us with so many things inside of our hearts and minds so we owe nature a favor by spreading love. I hope everyone is out there living it up and enjoying this point of the year 2008. At this time, I wanted to share one of my favorite videos from last summer... "Chocolate Rain!" I still get giggles when I see this dude pull away from the mic get air.

But the coolest one of all has to be this version from Pittsburgh metal/hardcore band Ryashon.

The indication of a true Internet meme is when it goes beyond water cooler talk (or, in today's word, beyond "Twitter Talk") and becomes acted on. Once it gets participation on a large scale then it's on its way.

A few years ago there was the guy (Noah Kalina) who took a picture of himself in the same position every day for, what?, two years and then strung them together into a short video. Within days, dozens of copies and parodies had popped up on YouTube. There was another one, posted by a guy named Matt Harding, that also took over. It showed a guy dancing madly in about three dozen different cities. Cut to music, it was actually a self-referring comment on Internet memes -- with tons of energy it started popping up all over the Internet world. What makes one clever idea take off, while a thousand others die a self-conscious death?

To get a sense of what I mean when I say "internet memes" check out this really nifty Internet Meme Timeline, where such societal momentary crazes are published on a linkable timeline all the way to 1996 (can you say "Dancing Baby" and the page full of dancing hamsters anyone?) Of course, one of my personal favorites is "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" which has a certain geek appeal.

Randy Riggs, over at Mental Floss, has a discussion about Internet Memes in which he makes the following hilarious, but completely true, observation:

When Ted Stevens, the elderly senator from Alaska, infamously referred to the internet as “a series of tubes” during hearings on a 2006 net neutrality bill which he himself had sponsored, he unwittingly entered into a kind of irony vortex. Stevens had simultaneously proved himself clueless about the web — at one point saying “an internet was sent by my staff” in reference to an email — and had also created an internet meme, his “tubes” comment earning him a place among such hallowed meme icons as the Numa Numa guy and “2 Girls 1 Cup” (not to mention President Bush’s infamous neologism “the internets.”)

I don't know about you, but I constantly refer to the Net as "the internets" (to the consternation of friends of mine who weren't aware of the famous -- to me -- Bushism) and I've also dropped the phrase "series of tubes" into conversation, with equally blank-faced results.

As if this wasn't amazing enough. Weezer have done another tribute of the 'Youtube spirit', this time it's a duet with Tay Zonday of CHAWKLIT REEEEEEIIIIIIGGGGGN-erm...fame.

The video coincides with the launch of a new Weezer channel on YouTube.

Web celebs including Tay Zonday (Chocolate Rain), Lauren Caitlin Upton (Miss South Carolina), Judson Laipply (Evolution of Dance), Chris Cocker (Leave Britney Alone), and Numa Numa guy feature in the vid, as well as  Diet Coke & Mentos, hamster, GI Joe parody, Soulja Boy, Kevin Federline, Daft Hands and Peanut Butter Jelly.

The You Tube channel features additional B-roll material, band introductions, shoot footage and archived videos. Frontman Rivers Cuomo reportedly sees the YouTube presence as a chance to keep the Weezer buzz alive. 

"It was mayhem making the video," guitarist Brian Bell explained. "We were performing with all these amazing YouTube celebrites, and I felt like I had walked into my own computer."
