"Yesterday morning [June 11, 2008], Congressmen Frank Wolf and Chris Smith revealed that their computers had been hacked by Communist China (Bloomberg, Voice of America, and the Washington Examiner). In Wolf's case, it was his office computers; in Smith's case, the office that was hit belonged to the Human Rights subcommittee of the House Int'l Relations Committee (Smith chaired the subcommittee when the hack attack occurred two years ago). I am pleased to say that the blogosphere has been all over this one. Fellow CFBA members Makina (Between Heaven and Earth and Boycott 2008) and Joshua (One Free Korea) pounced, and the latter's title was particularly apropos. That said, I fear the reason for the hacks has not been given the attention it deserves.

"Communist China was not interested in military information, national security secrets, or industrial espionage targets (although it's fairly clear from this that anyone who is interested in such things may have a much easier time lifting them from the legislative branch than the executive one). They wanted information on exiled dissidents here in the U.S. Take a look at the consequence Wolf discussed (VOA):

Pressed on the extent to which individuals were compromised by the attack or placed in jeopardy, Wolf had this response: "Yes, they [China] have sent public security police to an individual in Fairfax County [Virginia]," he said. "They photographed her house. She was wise enough to get their license plate. I had the FBI run the license plate, and yes they were Chinese officials in Fairfax County."

"In other words, the hacking was part of the overarching Communist plot to silence and intimidate anti-Communist exiles outside Communist China - part and parcel with the espionage/intimidation network exposed in Canada three years ago and the ongoing Battle of Flushing between Falun Gong practitioners and Communist-instigated mobs (the Epoch Times has the latest from "the front").

"With this new (or, to be more precise, more recently revealed) reality in mind, we can come to certain conclusions:

The Chinese Communist Party clearly considers exiled dissidents to be a threat at least on par with the United States or any other major power - and perhaps the regime sees the exiles as a greater threat.

Given that both American political party establishments are drinking the "engagement" Kool-Aid, it must be the reaction at home to these exiles that bothers the regime so much (in particular the contradictions between the image the Party projects and the brutal reality - see the Epoch Times, Newsmax, and the Washington Times for more on this).

If the cadres are this determined to keep tabs on Chinese dissident exiled across the ocean, what are they doing in the island democracy just across the Formosa Strait (something the leaders of said island democracy might want to keep in mind as they resume talks with the cadres - CNN, Central News Agency via Epoch Times, Washington Post, and Washington Times)?

"The larger point is this: for the Chinese Communist Party, the only concern is maintaining power. Nothing else - not China's national interest, not regional harmony, not the wishes of the Chinese people - matters to them. Whatever is an obstacle - as large as the United States and as small as dissidents who seek shelter there - must be watched, restricted, contained, and eventually neutralized." Source: D. J. McGuire, China e-Lobby, 6/12/08

POPE BENEDICT IGNORED U.N. SEX SCANDALS
“Coverage of the United

POPE BENEDICT IGNORED U.N. SEX SCANDALS

“Coverage of the United Nations speech by Pope Benedict XVI was extremely lacking in critical analysis. None of the stories that Accuracy in Media surveyed in the major newspapers alluded to the fact that while the Pope had just finished apologizing for the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal in several U.S. appearances, his speech to the U.N. ignored the history of rapes of women and children committed by its so-called military ‘peacekeepers.’ This has been a major U.N. scandal for years.”

“The Pope met with American victims of mostly homosexual Catholic priests, but said nothing about the victims of the U.N. A Danish documentary, ‘And the U.N. Came,’ blames U.N. troops for creating the AIDS crisis in Cambodia. The film documents how U.N. soldiers spread the disease by having sex with local citizens, children, and prostitutes. Asked about the conduct of U.N. soldiers, one U.N. official is shown saying, ‘Boys will be boys.’ ”

IS IT VATICAN POLICY TO INCREASE U.N. MILITARY INFLUENCE?

“Instead of addressing this scandal, Benedict called on the flawed and corrupt body to exercise a military doctrine known as the ‘Responsibility to Protect’ people in trouble. This is one part of the speech that made news. It means the Vatican has endorsed the concept of the U.N. acquiring more power and influence, including of a military nature. Our media failed to point out that, generally speaking, the U.N. is considered incompetent or worse in military affairs. The 1994 Rwanda genocide, carried out under the noses of U.N. officials and peacekeepers, is considered the most notorious example.”

U.N.’S PRO-ABORTION POPULATION CONTROL POLICIES SHOULD HAVE BEEN CONDEMNED

“In another curious development, at least for Catholics, Benedict ignored the world body’s devotion to population control through abortion and said that ‘My presence at this [U.N. General] Assembly is a sign of esteem for the United Nations, and it is intended to express the hope that the Organization will increasingly serve as a sign of unity between States and an instrument of service to the entire human family.’ ”

POPE JOHN PAUL II DENOUNCED U.N. “CONSPIRACY AGAINST LIFE”

“While Benedict talked a lot in his U.N. speech about human rights, he ignored the fact that the world body is crusading for an ‘international right to abortion’ worldwide. His predecessor, John Paul II, had referred to a ‘conspiracy against life’ based at the U.N.”

SINS OF COMMISSION AND OMISSION

“The Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM), which monitors U.N. affairs, has documented the involvement of the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) in coercive birth control programs, including forced abortion, in China. The Vatican suspended its own financial support for another U.N. agency, the U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF), after accusing the agency of involvement in abortion activities. Benedict said nothing about these controversies, however. …

“[T]he U.N. includes a ‘Meditation Room’ with strange lights and a large square block of stone where U.N. officials are alleged to come into contact with cosmic or spiritual forces. The ‘Environmental Sabbath’ program, administered by the U.N. Environment Program, advised children to hold hands and meditate around a tree. …

“The Pope explicitly endorsed the Responsibility to Protect, known by the acronym R2P, a doctrine endorsed by the U.N. in 2005 and designed to help the world body assume the powers of a world government. The World Federalist Movement, which has promoted world government, global taxes and a United Nations Army, has cultivated international acceptance of the concept. …

“ ‘the Church is happy to be associated with the activity of this distinguished Organization, charged with the responsibility of promoting peace and good will throughout the earth.’ ”

SHOULD THE U.N. BE GIVEN “WORLD GOVERNMENT” RESPONSIBILITIES?

“In the most explicit part of the speech explaining and accepting the R2P concept, the Pope said that ‘Every State has the primary duty to protect its own population from grave and sustained violations of human rights, as well as from the consequences of humanitarian crises, whether natural or man-made. If States are unable to guarantee such protection, the international community must intervene with the juridical means provided in the United Nations Charter and in other international instruments. The action of the international community and its institutions, provided that it respects the principles undergirding the international order, should never be interpreted as an unwarranted imposition or a limitation of sovereignty.’ ” Source: Cliff Kincaid, Accuracy in Media, 4/20/08

VIA S. 1858, BUSH ADMINISTRATION AND ITS SUCCESSORS

ACQUIRE INTERVENTION RIGHTS AFFECTING NEWBORN BABIES

“Last week President Bush signed into law a bill S. 1858, known as The Newborn Screening Saves Lives Act of 2007 which will allow the federal government to begin to screen the DNA of all newborn babies in the U.S. within six months.”

YOUR BABY’S DNA COULD BE ON THE INTERNET

“This is a move by the government to initiate the establishment of a national DNA database. (Wasn't there an episode of X-File like this?) The justification for this law is that it represents preparation for any sort of ‘public health emergency.’ The bill states that the federal government should ‘continue to carry out, coordinate, and expand research in newborn screening’ and ‘maintain a central clearinghouse of current information on newborn screening... ensuring that the clearinghouse is available on the Internet and is updated at least quarterly’. …”

GENETIC TESTING FACILITATED

“Further information on this was reported by Steve Watson (www.infowars.net, 5/2/08):

Sections of the bill also make it clear that DNA may be used in genetic experiments and tests. One health care expert and prominent critic of DNA screening is Twila Brase, president of the Citizens’ Council on Health Care who has written a detailed analysis (PDF) of the new law in which she warns that it represents the first program of populationwide genetic testing.

“Brase states that S.1858 and H.R. 3825, the House version of the bill, will:

1. Establish a national list of genetic conditions for which newborns and children are to be tested.

2. Establish protocols for the linking and sharing of genetic test results nationwide.

3. Build surveillance systems for tracking the health status and health outcomes of individuals diagnosed at birth with a genetic defect or trait.

4. Use the newborn screening program as an opportunity for government agencies to identify, list, and study ‘secondary conditions’ of individuals and their families.

5. Subject citizens to genetic research without their knowledge or consent.

“ ‘Soon, under this bill, the DNA of all citizens will be housed in government genomic biobanks and considered governmental property for government research,’ Brase writes. ‘The DNA taken at birth from every citizen is essentially owned by the government, and every citizen becomes a potential subject of government-sponsored genetic research.’ ”

CONSENT NOT REQUIRED

“ ‘The public is clueless. S. 1858 imposes a federal agenda of DNA databanking and population-wide genetic research. It does not require consent and there are no requirements to fully inform parents about the warehousing of their child’s DNA for the purpose of genetic research.’ …

“DNA of newborns has already been harvested, tested, stored and experimented with nationwide.

“The National Conference of State Legislatures lists for all 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia, the various statutes or regulatory provisions under which newborns' DNA is already being collected.

“In addition, all 50 states are now routinely providing these results to the Department of Homeland Security.”

FROM REGULATION TO STATUTE

“The Newborn Screening Saves Lives Act of 2007, merely establishes this practice within the law.”

RON PAUL OBSERVES THE STATUTE’S UNCONSTITUTIONALITY

“Another vocal critic of bill S. 1858 is Texas Congressman Ron Paul who made the following comments before the U.S. House of Representatives:

“ ‘I cannot support legislation, no matter how much I sympathize with the legislation’s stated goals, that exceed the Constitutional limitations on federal power or in any way threatens the liberty of the American people. Since S. 1858 violates the Constitution, and may have untended consequences that will weaken the American health care system and further erode medical privacy, I must oppose it.’ …

“ ‘Those of us in the medical profession should be particularly concerned about policies allowing government officials and state-favored interests to access our medical records without our consent … My review of S. 1858 indicates the drafters of the legislation made no effort to ensure these newborn screening programs do not violate the privacy rights of parents and children,’ Paul continued.

“ ‘In fact, by directing federal bureaucrats to create a contingency plan for newborn screening in the event of a “public health” disaster, this bill may lead to further erosions of medical privacy. As recent history so eloquently illustrates, politicians are more than willing to take, and people are more than willing to cede, liberty during times of “emergency,” ’ he concluded.

“This is pretty astounding news. But where is the outrage? Where is the protest? There is none, because most people are totally unaware. Before November you ought to find out how YOUR present Congressman voted on this piece of intrusive legislation. Find out more about this, and what YOUR own state legislature already has on the books regarding DNA collection from newborns. Let's all do something to get this type of legislation repealed or at least give parents real rights of consent.” Source: Judy Aron, Consent of the Governed: Personal Rights (http://yedies.blogspot.com), 5/7/08

NAFTA CUTS U.S. JOBS

“One recent example is the Hershey Company, the chocolate maker. This month, the president of the Teamsters union, James P. Hoffa, traveled to Reading, Pa., to visit what the union called ‘Nafta victims,’ 260 workers in a Hershey plant that is moving to Mexico by the end of the year.

“ ‘These so-called trade deals are killing American jobs,’ Mr. Hoffa said. ‘They aren’t about trade, they’re about helping companies move their factories to countries with cheaper labor.’

“In theory, stronger labor and environmental standards would raise the cost of doing business in Mexico and might make companies think twice about moving. But with the average hourly manufacturing wage in Mexico about 13 percent that of the United States average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Mexican labor is still cheap. …

“At the same time, China and other Asian countries are eroding the promised surge in American exports to Mexico. Ten years ago, Mexico bought almost 80 percent of its imports from the United States. Last year, that figure dropped to just less than 50 percent.” Source: Elisabeth Malkin, The New York Times, 4/22/08, p. C1

CHICOMS CAN STRIKE U.S. CITIES WITHOUT LEAVING HOME

“Military Superiority: While the focus is on Iranian and Syrian nuclear activities, China quietly builds an underground submarine base on Hainan Island. Its purpose is to challenge U.S. naval supremacy and to fight and win a nuclear war.

“On April 1, 2001, a Chinese J-8 fighter collided with and forced down an American EP-3 spy plane that was flying over the South China Sea near the Chinese island of Hainan. Its 24-member crew was held for 11 days. It was no April Fool’s joke.

“The EP-3 was possibly monitoring sea trials of China’s new Type 094 ballistic missile submarine capable of striking U.S. cities from Chinese waters. China’s military was not amused.”

CHINESE REDS HAVE BUILT AN UNDERGROUND ATTACK BASE

“The London Daily Telegraph has just published photographs obtained from the commercial satellite company DigitalGlobe of what the EP-3 may have been looking for – a massive new Chinese naval base including underground caverns capable of hiding a major part of China’s growing ballistic missile and attack submarine fleet.

“Analysts for Jane’s Intelligence Review report massive tunnel entrances at the Yulin naval base near the town of Sanya on the southern tip of Hainan Island. The entrances built into hillsides around the base are 60 feet high. They are believed to lead to caverns capable of hiding up to 20 nuclear submarines from spy satellites.

“Jane’s reports that as part of a naval exercise last December, the first of China’s new Type 094 submarines was moved to the base near Sanya. The Pentagon estimates that China will have five of the new Jin-class ballistic missile submarines, each outfitted with a dozen 5,000-mile-range JL-2 missiles, operational by 2010.”

BEIJING BUILDS WHILE U.S. CAPABILITIES ARE DIVERTED TO IRAQ

“Some of the photos showed numerous warships moored to two long and three shorter jetties at the base. They are capable of accommodating at least two carrier battle groups. The Chinese are known to be refitting the former Soviet carrier Varyag and are expecting to build six new carriers within the next decade.

“China is deploying an impressive surface fleet as well, one that with aircraft carriers could form impressive battle groups. It includes Sovremenny-class guided missile destroyers purchased from Russia. They come equipped with supersonic sea-skimming SS-N-22 Sunburn cruise missiles designed for one purpose – to attack American carrier battle groups.

“China is rapidly developing a blue-water navy. It has 57 submarines, five of them nuclear, many equipped with quiet German diesel engines and Yingji-8 anti-ship cruise missiles that they can launch while submerged.

“On Oct. 26, 2006, a S20 Song-class attack submarine surfaced undetected within weapons distance of the USS Kitty Hawk in the East China Sea off Okinawa.”

STALEMATE OR CHECKMATE?

“John J. Tkacik, a senior research fellow in Asian Studies at the Heritage Foundation, told Cybercast News Service that China has ‘roughly 35 super-quiet submarines that the U.S. Navy can’t seem to track. This means China’s navy is already able to deter U.S. battle groups from entering waters around Taiwan in the event of a confrontation.’

“One of the advantages of the Chinese base is that submarines based there are close to deep water, making their deployment quicker and harder to detect. Jane’s analysts suggest the base could be used for ‘expeditionary as well as defensive operations’ and would allow the submarines to ‘break out to launch locations closer to the U.S.’

“According to the 2007 edition of the Pentagon’s annual report on Chinese military power, China is developing a capability beyond regional war at a pace that both surprises and concerns U.S. officials, a capability that includes a new generation of ballistic missile submarines and the capability of a first-strike attack on our military satellites.

“Appropriately, the Pentagon report captures the essence of Chinese military and geopolitical strategy by quoting former supreme leader Deng Xiaoping’s advice to ‘hide our capacities and bide our time, be good at maintaining a low profile.’

“Lyle Goldstein, director of the China Maritime Studies Institute at the U.S. Naval War College, recently said: ‘What was gray before is now becoming clear. China can now effectively fight a nuclear war.’

CHICOM SUPERWEAPONS COULD RENDER U.S. DEFENSELESS

“His name was Zhang Hongbao, and in 2000, he managed to flee from China to the United States. This happened after Chi Haotian, former ‘minister of national defense’ of China, and Xiong Guangkai, deputy-general-in-chief of the People’s Liberation Army, stated that while the United States has been working on weapons like aircraft carriers and bombers, China concentrates on post-nuclear super weapons, and its geostrategic goal is a ‘world Chinese net.’ …

“Hongbao says that according to the Chinese military on the Xinhua Internet site and the Military Affairs Internet site, Chinese super weapons are based on major military technologies: laser, missile interception, intercontinental ballistic missiles with multiple warheads, and stealth technology for submarines.

“The Chinese top dictators are quoted by Hongbao as repeating that ‘the Chinese post-nuclear super weapons render the enemy [the U.S.] defenseless.’ ”

A ONE-PUNCH KNOCKOUT IS PLANNED

“According to the Chinese Communist Party, the Chinese weapons have the following features:

• One hit destroys the enemy, not merely damages the enemy.

• One hit can wipe out the total population of the United States along with its friendly and allied countries.

• If the U.S. can destroy the enemy within 70 days, then the CCP will destroy the enemy within 60 days.

• Before the enemies know it, they are dead, which dispenses with a costly resistance.

• The killing of the population of the United States and of its 53 friendly and allied countries but preserving their wealth means acquiring the biggest trophy in human history.”

“UNRESTRICTED WARFARE” IS THE BATTLECRY

“The Chinese military dictators think in terms of the now well-known book ‘Unrestricted Warfare,’ published by a Chinese military publishing house in 1999. If you can do any harm to the enemy, do it! The United States and its allies cannot live without electricity? Produce power outages, and the more the better!

“Says Hongbao, ‘Thus inadvertently, Zhang Wannian, deputy chairman of the Central Military Commission, reveals a vital secret: China has mastered the technology of causing large-scale power outages!’

“Yet outages, no matter how extensive and lasting, are only one way of disrupting civilian life by ‘unrestricted warfare.’ Post-nuclear super weapons are capable of producing earthquakes and tsunamis. …”

U.S. FAILURE IN IRAQ UNDERMINED BEIJING FEAR OF U.S.

“[B]efore the war in Iraq, many Chinese military scientific and technical specialists spoke respectfully about the U.S. armed forces. Today, with rare exceptions, they have nothing for the subject but scorn. Constitutionalism and democracy do not work well for military goals in the United States.

“World domination is a necessity for the Chinese dictators, or otherwise they will be threatened by Tiananmens (recall the replica of the Statue of Liberty in Tiananmen Square!) or pulled down as the Soviet dictatorship was about two years later despite the Soviet armed forces and the political police, both of which had been developed since 1918, that is, for more than 70 years.

“Oddly enough, the Chinese dictators can frighten their population into submission even less than the Soviet dictators ever could. About 100,000 revolts occur in China annually. Zhang Hongbao is a good example of an individual rebel, trying to stir the resistance of the world to the aggressive dictatorship of China.” Source: Lev Navrozov (navlev@cloud9.net), www.Newsmax.com, 4/17/08

MEDIA IGNORED BIG VOTE FOR RON PAUL IN PENNSYLVANIA PRIMARY

“ ‘When the Pennsylvania returns rained down Tuesday night, the narrative became clear fast. The Democrats’ exit polls spelled disaster: Some 25 percent of the primary voters said they would defect to [John] McCain or not vote at all if Barack Obama were the nominee. How could the party possibly survive this bitter, perhaps race-based civil war?’ New York Times columnist Frank Rich writes.

“ ‘But as the doomsday alarm grew shrill, few noticed that on this same day in Pennsylvania, 27 percent of Republican primary voters didn’t just tell pollsters they would defect from their party’s standard-bearer; they went to the polls, gas prices be damned, to vote against Mr. McCain.

“Though ignored by every channel I surfed, there actually was a GOP primary on Tuesday, open only to registered Republicans. And while it was superfluous in determining that party’s nominee, 220,000 Pennsylvania Republicans (out of their total turnout of 807,000) were moved to cast ballots for Mike Huckabee or, more numerously, Ron Paul. More than 100 countries have ratified the treaty.

“Although it reiterated long-standing U.S. concerns about the court, Mr. Bellinger’s speech represented a rhetorical turnabout for an administration that came to power determined to hobble the movement for a permanent war crimes tribunal. …”

“ ‘It reflects the yearning the Rice State Department has for acceptance’ by academics and foreign intellectuals, Mr. Bolton said. ‘The fight resumes after Jan. 20,’ when a new administration takes office, he added.”

OPPOSITION TO NAU IS NOT SECRET

“By definition, conspiracies are usually secret. There’s nothing secret about right-wingers organizing to criticize the Clintons and their goals, and there’s nothing secret about plans to morph the United States into a North American Union.”

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME IS STILL A ROSE

“The elites, however, must be feeling the heat. Following the Hudson Institute’s helpful suggestion to change the name of the Security and Prosperity Partnership, the fourth annual SPP meeting … held in New Orleans on April 21 will now be called the North American Leaders Summit, and the promoters of the TransTexas Corridor are trying to change its name to ‘regional loop.’ ”

ECONOMIC INTEGRATION AND HARMONIZATION ARE CODE WORDS FOR MERGER

“To see what the elites are planning, you don’t have peek through key holes or plant a spy under the table. Just read their published reports.

“The words most frequently used to describe their goals are ‘economic integration, ’ ‘labor mobility, ’ ‘free movement of goods, services and people across open borders, ’ and ‘harmonization’ of regulations.”

U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT PROMOTES CFR STRATEGY

“The Council on Foreign Relations published a major report May 17, 2005, only two months after the Security and Prosperity Partnership was announced by President Bush, then-Mexican President Vicente Fox and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin in Waco, Texas, on March 23, 2005. The Council on Foreign Relations document explaining SPP’s goals and methodology was posted on the U.S. State Department website, thereby confirming its authenticity.

“The report explains that the three SPP amigos at Waco ‘committed their governments’ to ‘Building a North American Community’ by 2010 with a common ‘outer security perimeter,’ ‘the extension of full labor mobility to Mexico, ’ allowing Mexican trucks ‘unlimited access,’ ‘totalization’ of illegal immigrants into the U.S. Social Security system, and ‘a permanent tribunal for North American dispute resolution.’ ”

CSIS AND HUDSON FOLLOW CFR LEAD

“The prestigious Center for Strategic & International Studies published a report in 2007 called ‘North American Future 2025 Project.’ It advocates ‘economic integration, ’ the ‘free flow of people across national borders’ and ‘policies that integrate governments.’

“The CSIS report even calls for ‘harmonizing legislation’ on intellectual property rights with other countries. That’s a direct attack on our U.S. patent system, which is the key to U.S. leadership in inventions and innovation.

“The Hudson Institute published a 35-page white paper in 2007 called ‘Negotiating North America: The Security and Prosperity Partnership. ’ It states that SPP is the vehicle ‘for economic integration’ with Mexico and Canada and even ‘combines an agenda with a political commitment.’ ”

REJECTION OF CONSTITUTIONALLY REQUIRED ACCOUNTABILITY

“The white paper explains that SPP’s ‘design’ is for the executive branch to exercise full ‘authority’ to ‘enforce and execute’ whatever is decided by a three-nation agreement of ‘civil service professionals’ as though it were ‘law. ’ That means evading treaty ratification and even congressional legislation and oversight.”

SHOTGUN MARRIAGE MERELY FOLLOWS U.N. STATUTORY RAPE

“Don’t forget the importance of the Wall Street Journal and its longtime, very influential editorial-page editor, the late Robert Bartley. When Mexico’s Fox called for NAFTA to evolve into something like the European Union, Bartley wrote: ‘There is one voice north of the Rio Grande that supports his vision. To wit, this newspaper. ’

“In his book ‘Post-Capitalist Society,’ influential business writer Peter F. Drucker wrote, ‘The economic integration of the three countries into one region is proceeding so fast that it will make little difference whether the marriage is sanctified legally or not.’ ”

AMERO WOULD UNDERCUT U.S. ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE

“When Larry King asked Fox about plans for a ‘Latin America united with one currency,’ Fox answered in the affirmative. He said that one currency was part of the ‘vision’ of the Free Trade Area of the Americas that Bush agreed to in the Declaration of Quebec City in 2001.”

BUSH IS A “NEW WORLD ORDER” SNEAK

“So now we know why the Bush administration won’t build a fence to interfere with ‘labor mobility’ across open borders. Now we know why Bush won’t pardon former Border Patrol agents Ignatio Ramos and Jose Compean, while winking at the prosecutor’s deal to give immunity to a professional drug smuggler.

“Now we know why Bush thumbed his nose at the overwhelming congressional votes (411-3 in the House and 75-23 in the Senate) to exclude Mexican trucks from U.S. roads. Now we know why Bush has been more persistent in pursuing ‘totalization’ to put illegal immigrants into Social Security than to promote his proposal to privatize a small part of Social Security for U.S. citizens.” Source: Phyllis Schlafly, www.WorldNetDaily.com, 4/11/08

Here are some news items from just this past week:

In Tibet, according to an Associated Press report, "police opened fire on hundreds of Buddhist monks and lay people who had marched on local government offices to demand the release of two monks detained for possessing photographs of the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled Buddhist leader." At least eight died.

In Iraq, the mass murder of civilians continues while American and Iraqi government forces continue to battle murderous Shiite gangs known as militias. And a 40-year-old Assyrian Orthodox priest was killed in a drive-by shooting in Baghdad in the latest attack against Iraq's Christian minority.

In Zimbabwe, one of the world's longest-reigning tyrants, Robert Mugabe, began to violently annul the latest elections. He has virtually destroyed a once thriving country. Unemployment is 80 percent. Inflation is over 100,000 percent. The Zimbabwean dollar has been trading at a rate of 55 million for one U.S. dollar. And life expectancy has gone from 60 to 35.

In Woodbridge, Va., moronic officials at an elementary school called in police to arrest a 6-year-old boy for slapping a 6-year-old on her bottom. He has now been labeled a sex offender for life. And he is hardly alone among elementary school students. As reported in the Washington Post: "The Virginia Department of Education reported that 255 elementary students were suspended last year for offensive sexual touching, or 'improper physical contact against a student.' In Maryland, 166 elementary school children were suspended last year for sexual harassment, including three preschoolers, 16 kindergartners and 22 first-graders, according to the State Department of Education."

In Pakistan, more than 25,000 people rallied against "Fitna," an anti-Quran film made by Geert Wilders, a member of the Dutch Parliament. Speakers called on Muslims to kill themselves and others in defense of Islam's honor.

A global recall of millions of Chinese-made toys was the result of new industry standards, not poor quality products.

So says Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng.

Speaking at a news conference in Beijing Thursday, Gao said that the recall was a responsible move, given that products could affect the health and safety of children.

He added that a recall of more than 18 million toys with magnets was the result of new standards that were put in place in May.

Addressing the issue of lead found in toys, Gao blamed loopholes in the manufacturing process in China, but also noted that retailers were to blame as well for their failure to inspect products.

On Wednesday, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the two US importers, announced the voluntary recall of about 300,000 products.

The toy recall campaign follows similar warnings around the world about the toxic contamination of toothpaste, seafood and pet food produced in China.

Last week, the Mattel toy company recalled more than 18 million Chinese-made toys because they had been coated in lead paint or contained small magnets that would be hazardous if swallowed by young children.

China's Commerce Ministry said it is investigating companies that made the recalled Mattel toys.

In response to these concerns, China has blacklisted more than 400 companies for violating trade rules.

On Thursday, China announced the launch of a new nationwide safety campaign that focuses on food and drugs, as well as increased monitoring of exports.

Islamic Tolerance and Little Aisha Alerts: "Two Christian girls of 11 and 16 kidnapped, converted to Islam and forced to marry," by Qaiser Felix for Asia News (thanks to Nicolei):

Faisalabad (AsiaNews) – Two Christian girls, little more than children, were kidnapped from their families recently, forcibly converted to Islam and then married off to strangers. Both of the kidnaps took place in Faisalabad, the third largest city in Pakistan, and both were completely ignored by the police. The phenomenon is not a new one however, underlined numerous human rights activist, but it is dangerously on the increase. On August 5 Muhammad Adnan, a Muslim from Zulfiqar colony Faisalabad and his sister kidnapped Zunaira, an eleven years old Christian girl from her home in Warispura. After the kidnap, they forced her to convert to Islam and marry her kidnaper Muhammad.

The small girl’s mother, Abida, told AsiaNews: “When I was roaming in streets in search of my daughter two Muslim men of the area told me that they saw Adnan and his sister taking my daughter”. Abida decided to go to the kidnapper’s house, from which however she is thrown out. Returning home, she was contacted by two men who revealed the kidnappers identity and offer to act as negotiators for her daughters release in exchange for money.

The drug/jihad connection is nothing new. The Taliban trafficked in drugs, as long as the users were unbelievers. "Terrorists teaming with drug cartels," by Sara A. Carter for the Washington Times (thanks to Davida):

Islamic extremists embedded in the United States — posing as Hispanic nationals — are partnering with violent Mexican drug gangs to finance terror networks in the Middle East, according to a Drug Enforcement Administration report."Since drug traffickers and terrorists operate in a clandestine environment, both groups utilize similar methodologies to function ... all lend themselves to facilitation and are among the essential elements that may contribute to the successful conclusion of a catastrophic event by terrorists," said the confidential report, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Times.

The 2005 report outlines an ongoing scheme in which multiple Middle Eastern drug-trafficking and terrorist cells operating in the U.S. fund terror networks overseas, aided by established Mexican cartels with highly sophisticated trafficking routes.

These terrorist groups, or sleeper cells, include people who speak Arabic, Spanish and Hebrew and, for the most part, arouse no suspicion in their communities.

"It is very likely that any future 'September 11th' type of terrorist event in the United States may be facilitated, wittingly or unwittingly, by drug traffickers operating on both sides of the United States-Mexico border," the DEA report says.

Human Rights Watch: No Progress in China
A dire human rights record and a renewed crackdown on media

Human Rights Watch: No Progress in China

A dire human rights record and a renewed crackdown on media freedom may spoil China's hopes of a successful “coming out party” at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, Human Rights Watch said Tuesday.

A year ahead of the August 8, 2008 opening ceremonies, the China shows no substantive progress in addressing long-standing human rights concerns. Instead, apparently more worried about political stability, Beijing is tightening its grip on domestic human rights defenders, grassroots activists and media to choke off any possible expressions of dissent ahead of the Games.

“Instead of a pre-Olympic ‘Beijing spring’ of greater freedom and tolerance of dissent, we are seeing the gagging of dissidents, a crackdown on activists, and attempts to block independent media coverage,” said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “The government seems afraid that its own citizens will embarrass it by speaking out about political and social problems, but China’s leaders apparently don’t realize authoritarian crackdowns are even more embarrassing.”

China has a well-documented history of serious human rights abuses, including widespread torture, censorship of the media and internet, controls on religious freedom, and repression of ethnic minorities in Tibet and Xinjiang.

In addition, China continues to lead the world in executions. The government classifies the number of people executed as a state secret, but it is believed that China executes many more people than the rest of the world combined each year. Most trials are deeply flawed, as the accused often do not have access to adequate defense counsel, trials are usually closed to the public, evidence is often obtained through torture, and the appellate process lacks needed safeguards. China’s courts lack independence, as they remain controlled by the government and ruling Chinese Communist Party.

But the staging of the Olympics is exacerbating problems of forced evictions, migrant labor rights abuses, and the use of house arrests to silence political opponents. The government is continuing its crackdown on lawyers, human rights defenders and activists who dedicate themselves to rule of law and the exposure of rights abuses. Fear of citizen activism has led to government obstruction of local activists and grassroots organizations working to stem China’s HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Fears of harm to China’s national image have even led Chinese officials to stop prominent activists from leaving the country. Among them, Hu Jia and Zeng Jinyan, a husband-and-wife team of human rights activists, have been clamped under house arrest and travel restrictions since May on unsubstantiated suspicions of “harming state security.”

The victims of government retribution against perceived “troublemakers” often include those who devote themselves to defending some of China’s most marginalized and vulnerable citizens.

Chen Guangcheng, a blind, self-educated lawyer who documented abuses of China’s family planning law, was convicted in August 2006 of instigating an attack on government offices in a sham trial in which his lawyers were physically attacked and then detained by police to prevent them from attending.

Gao Zhisheng, an outspoken advocate of the rights of human rights abusers said in April 2007 that he agreed to write a confession to charges of sedition leveled at him in December 2006 only after he had been tortured and security officials had threatened his wife and children.

“Political repression is not in keeping with the behavior of a responsible power and Olympic host,” said Adams. “The Chinese government shouldn’t waste this unique opportunity to use the 2008 Games to demonstrate to the world it is serious about improving the rights situation in China.”

Human Rights Watch said that China’s close relationship with dictatorships and rights- abusing governments in places like Sudan, Burma, Cambodia and Zimbabwe will also come under close scrutiny in the coming year.

With one year to go before the Olympics launch, “The starting gun has been fired on the assessment of China’s commitment to rights at home and abroad,” said Adams. “Just as Chinese citizens will be rooting for their athletes to win medals, we are rooting for the Chinese government to move up in the league tables on rights protection.”

More background on major areas for human rights reform in the Olympic run-up:

1. Forced evictions and school closures. The construction of facilities for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing has involved forced evictions of thousands of citizens in and around Beijing, often without adequate compensation or access to new housing. The pre-Olympic “clean-up” of Beijing has resulted in the closure of dozens of officially unregistered schools for the children of migrant workers.

2. Labor rights. Thousands of migrant workers employed on Olympic and other construction sites across Beijing do not receive legally mandated pay and benefits including labor insurance and days off, and are often compelled to do dangerous work without adequate safeguards.

3. Repression of ethnic minorities. China continues to use the “war on terrorism” to justify policies to eradicate the “three evil forces” – terrorism, separatism, and religious extremism – allegedly prevalent among Uighurs, a Turkic-speaking Muslim population in China’s Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. Uighurs who express “separatist” tendencies are routinely sentenced to quick, secret and summary trials, sometimes accompanied by mass sentencing rallies. The death penalty is common. In Tibet, Chinese authorities still view the Dalai Lama, in exile in India since 1959, as central to the effort to separate Tibet from China and view Tibetan Buddhist belief as supportive of these efforts. Suspected “separatists,” many of whom come from monasteries and nunneries, are routinely imprisoned.

4. Religious freedom. China does not recognize freedom of religion outside the state-controlled system in which all congregations, mosques, temples, churches and monasteries must register. The government also curtails religious freedom by designating and repressing some groups as “cults,” such as the Falungong.

5. Death penalty and executions. The government does not publicize figures for the death penalty, but it is mandated for no fewer than 68 crimes. Though the exact number is a state secret, it is estimated that as many as 10,000 executions are carried out each year.

5. HIV/AIDS. Measures to address China’s HIV/AIDS crisis are hampered as local officials and security forces continue to obstruct efforts by activists and grassroots organizations to contribute to prevention and education efforts and to organize care-giving.

6. House arrests. Numerous human rights defenders and government critics have been harassed, detained and subject to house arrest. If today’s pattern holds, a pre-Olympic clampdown in the weeks and months before the Games is likely.

7. Foreign policy. China’s close relations with countries linked to severe, ongoing human rights violations are also a serious source of concern. China maintains relations with and provides aid to regimes including Sudan, the site of egregious human rights violations in Darfur, and Burma, whose military junta violently suppresses civilians. China has also not ratified the International Covenant on Political and Civil Rights, which it signed in 1998.

FrontPageMagazine.com | 8/7/2007

Islamists in Oakland have been waging a campaign of intimidation and violence to carve out a section of the "progressive" city that conforms to Islamic law -- and the far-Left municipal leadership has looked the other way. It appears, however, they have finally gone too far.

Last Friday, August 3, Oakland police arrested figures associated with “Your Black Muslim Bakery”. In pre-dawn raids, Oakland Police SWAT team searched the bakery and three related locations finding several weapons and placing seven Muslims under arrest. They quickly recovered guns they believed to be the murder weapon used to kill Chauncey Bailey, Editor of the Oakland Post. Police say a 19-year-old bakery handyman named Devaughndre Broussard confessed, stating, "I am a good soldier."

The raids came just hours after Bailey, 57, was gunned down in broad daylight at a busy downtown Oakland intersection as he walked to work. Preparing an article for the Post, a black community weekly, Bailey had been investigating charges that the Muslims were involved in several recent Oakland murders.

Among the arrested was Yusef Bey IV, son of bakery founder, Yusef Bey. The other five arrested were not initially named. Police are still searching for two individuals who they also declined to name.

Shamir Yusuf Bey speaking in front of the bakery August 4 said: "This is not a reflection of Dr. Yusuf Bey." The organization's members all take the last name Bey. Explained Shamir Bey: "We are all sons of Dr. Yusuf Bey. He has taught us morals; he has taught us how to be advocates in our community."

Shamir Bey is correct about the source of his ‘morals.’ The elder Yusuf Bey died of cancer in 2003 awaiting court hearing on charges of rape, sodomy, and lewd acts with a child stemming from a 1992 case involving an impregnated 13 year old girl. Like the “prophet” Mohammed, Yusuf Bey was reputed to have fathered as many as 50 children–many by underage girls.

The bakery briefly made national news in November 2005, when members attacked two Oakland liquor stores, smashing bottles and demanding that the owners stop selling liquor. This follows a pattern established by the Taliban and other Islamist movements which form religious police squads for the “Suppression of Vice and the Promotion of Virtue.”

Bay Area leftists responded by saying, “Liquor stores are a blatant symbol of racism in America.” Oakland’s then-Mayor Jerry Brown gently criticized the attacks pointing out that, “not all liquor store owners should be tarred by the bad ones." According to the Oakland Tribune, “The clerk on duty (at the New York Market on San Pablo Ave) Sunday night was reported missing early Monday afternoon. He was found around 2 p.m., locked inside the trunk of a car in a supermarket parking lot in El Cerrito.”

Threatening and trashing local businesses wasn’t the only activity overlooked by the Politically Correct Oakland authorities operating under Mayor Brown’s replacement, open socialist Ron Dellums. After the murder of Chauncey Bailey, the New York Times reported August 3:

Oakland police officials said they suspected that the men were part of a group operating “a very violent criminal enterprise” out of a neighborhood bakery….

The police said the raid came after a lengthy investigation of other crimes, including two kidnappings on a single day in May, and two killings in July that occurred in the same north Oakland neighborhood where the bakery is located. The police had connected those crimes and put the bakery under surveillance before Mr. Bailey was killed.

“During our investigation, Chauncey Bailey was murdered, and it turns out that the evidence in that case also linked the same individuals we were looking at in the other two prior murders to that case,” said Lt. Ersie Joyner of the Oakland Police Department.

Asked whether there were any regrets about not moving faster to arrest the suspects before Mr. Bailey was killed, Assistant Chief Howard Jordan said that the Oakland Police Department’s resources were “very thin” and that the long-term investigation involved the cooperation of neighboring departments.

“Today was the best day we had, that we could have done this with the coordination of our allied agencies,” Mr. Jordan said. “We weren’t just kind of waiting around.”

Mr. Jordan said it was “very disheartening” to hear about Mr. Bailey’s killing, “and it was particularly disheartening to know it was connected to our investigation.”

Lieutenant Joyner said that many residents of the neighborhood surrounding the bakery had been afraid of the Muslim group, whose members sometimes shot automatic rifles in the air in a show of intimidation. Other members of the group, the police said, flaunted their defiance of outstanding warrants on assault and gun charges.

The incident that prompted the investigation, Lieutenant Joyner said, occurred last November. The police suspect that members of the group shot up a local car; no one was injured. The gun used in that shooting was linked to the recent killings, the police said.

In spite of its lengthy criminal ties, “Your Black Muslim Bakery” was able to establish retail locations at Oakland International Airport and the Oakland Coliseum. While they allegedly murdered Oakland residents, they sold “natural,” “reinvigorating” baked products through several Bay Area health food stores.

Journalist Adrian Morgan explains the origins of the group:

When Elijah Muhammad died in 1975, Nation of Islam members in California continued under one of the NoI's alternative names - the Black Muslims. These were led by Yusuf Bey, who typified the sort of person who led the NoI in its heyday, an entrepreneur who wanted to be a politician, with a decidedly sinister side.

While the Nation of Islam was riven into factions, following the 1975 death of Elijah Muhammad, Yusuf Bey, a captain of the group, negotiated a meeting in 1979 between Farrakhan and Silis Muhammad, leader of a breakaway faction. When Farrakhan revived the NoI in 1981, Yusuf Bey was not a part of the movement.

Born Joseph H. Stevens in Greeneville, Texas, in 1935, Bey moved with his parents to Oakland at the age of 5. He joined the US Air Force at age 17, and after four years he was honorably discharged. A qualified cosmetologist, Bey ran beauty salons in Oakland Santa Barbara, before opening a bakery in Santa Barbara in 1968 which later became "Your Black Muslim Bakery". He became involved with the Nation of Islam in 1964, and in 1971 moved his bakery to the East Bay. The bakery sold produce free of artificial colorants, with no refined sugar, fats or preservatives.

Bey had a weekly cable show called True Solutions, a platform for Elijah Muhammad's brand of Islam. He even ran for the position of Mayor of Oakland. He died on September 30, 2003, of colon cancer, having established an empire running housing, a school, a security firm and retail businesses, including Your Black Muslim Bakery. At the time of his death, he was engaged in a legal battle with a woman who claimed he had first raped her in 1982 when she was 13. She claimed she had been sexually abused by Yusuf Bey since the age of 10.

As members of Bey's family vied for the position of successor, violence broke out. On February 27, 2004 Waajid Aljawwaad Bey, president and CEO of the bakery, vanished. His rotting corpse was later found in a shallow grave in the Oakland Hills. In June 2005, Bey's adopted son John was wounded by a gunman in an ambush, and on October 25, Yusuf's 24-year old son Antar Bey was shot dead at a gas station. Nineteen-year old Yusuf Bey IV appeared to have taken over the leadership - he was indicted for smashing up Muslim-owned liquor stores in Oakland, events which happened a month after Antar Bey was killed. One store was torched, and an employee was locked in the trunk of a car. The tactic of wrecking premises had been employed under the leadership of Bey senior - in 1994 a rival laundry had been trashed by Black Muslims.

Why is this group still in business? It is not because the accused child-molester Bey was popular, he won only 5 percent of the vote in his 1994 run for Oakland mayor. Politically Correct Bay Area authorities have a long history of coddling gangsters who attach political rhetoric to their crimes. Publicly and openly.

A 2002 article by Chris Thompson in the East Bay Express explained criminal allegations against “Your Black Muslim Bakery” including the March 4, 1994, kidnapping, torture and extortion of Nigerian immigrant Olasunkanmi Onipede over a real estate deal with a Bakery associate. Presiding over the torture and extortion was, “Nedir Bey, the public face of Oakland's most prominent Black Muslim organization, the man who lobbies the City Council, orchestrates media events, and runs interference for the group's elusive leader….”

As the Express explained: “A group of up to six soldiers in the Black Muslim organization, led by a senior member of the Bey family, allegedly tortured two men for up to four hours – and were allegedly transporting him under armed escort when police arrived. When Oakland police tried to arrest the men involved in this incident, thirty Black Muslims mounted an organized assault on the officers – and the leader allegedly rallied his troops by calling for the death of white cops.”

These were not the only criminal accusations against Bey associates pointed out by the Express. “While acting as managers of a North Oakland apartment complex, four Black Muslims allegedly beat a tenant unconscious during an argument about his daughter.” Also, “prominent family member Nedir Bey has been accused of stalking his estranged lover, threatening to hurt her or steal their children.”

Al-Taqiyyah is a Muslim doctrine which allows Muslims to do anything as long as it furthers the power of Islam. The elder Bey built a multi-million dollar property and business empire following these methods. But after his death, his amoral followers’ narcissistic impulses began pulling the empire apart. As the Express explained:

According to court records, (Oakland drug dealer Lavelle) Stewart looked in his car and noticed that someone had stolen $1,200 worth of drugs. Turning on the crowd (outside the Omni Nightclub), he said he shouted, "One of you motherfuckers know what happened to my weed. We've been out here enjoying ourselves all day, and my shit didn't just come up missing like this." As (Akbar) Bey and his friends began arguing, Stewart said, "It's like this," pulled a .357 "bulldog" Magnum from his waistband, and shot Bey four times. Two bullets smashed his jaw and passed through his brain, and two rounds hit him in the chest. Stewart was sentenced to sixty years in prison. According to court records, the pathologist concluded that Akbar Bey was high on heroin or morphine at the time of his death.

Even after decades of murder and mayhem, pseudo-intellectual academic frauds can still make up conspiracy theories and excuses. Quoted by AP August 4, California State University–East Bay professor Benjamin Bowser claims:

The group has deep roots in Oakland's life and politics, and for decades it played a positive role in Oakland's black community, said Cal State East Bay professor Benjamin Bowser, a sociologist who has chronicled the city's history.

The group served as an example of upward economic mobility in an impoverished community, and its members tried to serve as a buffer against the rising drug trade, Bowser said. The bakery has also long provided ex-convicts with one of the few places they could work after being released from prison.

"The Black Muslims along with the Black Panthers were instrumental in really keeping the widespread mass marketing of drugs out of east and west Oakland in the late 1960s, until the government focused on taking the Panthers out," Bowser said.

Ironically Bowser is listed as a “Journalists’ Resource” by the Association of American University Presses.

Most leftists are too effete to physically enforce their own ideology. This is why they need thugs to do it for them. Substantial portions of Hillary Clinton’s 1969 senior thesis are about the benefits of “test(ing) whether the mechanisms of (Chicago) gang structures could not assist in shifting attitudes toward productive adult citizenship.” (p. 34.) Hillary’s mentor, Saul Alinsky, spent years working with Al Capone’s Chicago gang.

It was not a problem when the victims were other members of the Bey group or private citizens in Oakland, but with the murder of Chauncey Bailey, the thugs made the mistake of taking out one of the elite – a journalist. Suddenly the “very thin” Oakland police find themselves permitted to make multiple arrests and shut down the bakery. It is not yet clear whether Oakland authorities will actually finish the job and dismantle the Islamist monster which they have for years cultivated in their midst. But a line has been crossed. With the murder of Chauncey Bailey, the Islamists have killed one of the cultural elite.

The Express asks: “Why has it taken so long for all these allegations, the torture and rapes and beatings, to come before the public? Why has Bey commanded the respect and admiration of so many people – and why were so many civic leaders eager to call him friend? Countless Oakland leaders have offered the Bey family their services. It's time for them to answer for it.”

That was written five years ago.

China Promises EU Action on Product Safety

The European Union Commissioner for Consumer Protection, Meglena Kuneva, told reporters Tuesday that Chinese officials have said they will follow through on their agreement to provide quarterly reports on investigations into dangerous Chinese products exported to the EU.

"I received a political commitment of the highest level, and I will watch how this political commitment will be translated into practice," Kuneva said.

Kuneva said China is obliged by a memorandum of understanding, signed with the EU in early 2006, to fully investigate EU complaints of unsafe Chinese products and to provide a summary of enforcement efforts in quarterly reports. However, in the last year, she said, China has provided only two reports.

"The first report was very poor in respect of tracking down, the second was better but still not sufficient," she said. "That's why I'm here."

Half of all unsafe exports last year to the EU came from China. The EU is China's largest trading partner and one in four products imported to the EU come from China.

But those products include children's toys with high lead or chemical content or small parts that posed a choking hazard, batteries that may explode and lamps that could electrocute.

China is under pressure to better enforce product safety standards after a series of revelations about tainted and deadly exports.

Chinese officials last week announced the closure of a company that exported mislabeled chemicals that were used in cough syrup in Panama, resulting in the deaths of dozens of people there in the last year.

Two other companies were closed for using toxic chemicals in pet food ingredients believed to have killed hundreds of dogs and cats in North America earlier this year.

The United States has refused exports of Chinese farm-raised fish and seafood after drugs banned in the US were found in shipments.

Chinese officials acknowledge some Chinese companies are responsible for unsafe exports, but insist the vast majority of products are safe.

The Sudanese government has refused to hand over the two for prosecution. Charges include murder, rape, torture and “imprisonment or severe deprivation of liberty.” Severe deprivation of liberty is a euphemism for slavery. Egypt’s Al-Ahram Weekly observed not long ago that in Sudan, “slavery, sanctioned by religious zealots, ravaged the southern parts of the country and much of the west as well.” Muslim slavers in the Sudan primarily enslave non-Muslims, and chiefly Christians. According to the Coalition Against Slavery in Mauritania and Sudan (CASMAS), a human rights and abolitionist movement, “The current Khartoum government wants to bring the non-Muslim black South in line with Sharia law, laid down and interpreted by conservative Muslim clergy. The black animist and Christian South has been ravaged for many years of slave raids by Arabs from the north and east and resists Muslim religious rule and the perceived economic, cultural, and religious expansion behind it.” The BBC reported in March 2007 that slave raids “were a common feature of Sudan’s 21-year north-south war, which ended in 2005….According to a study by the Kenya-based Rift Valley Institute, some 11,000 young boys and girls were seized and taken across the internal border -- many to the states of South Darfur and West Kordofan….Most were forcibly converted to Islam, given Muslim names and told not to speak their mother tongue.” One modern-day Sudanese Christian slave, James Pareng Alier, was kidnapped and enslaved when he was twelve years old. Religion was a major element of his ordeal: “I was forced to learn the Koran and re-baptised “Ahmed.” They told me that Christianity was a bad religion. After a time we were given military training and they told us we would be sent to fight.” Alier has no idea of his family’s whereabouts. But while non-Muslims slaves are often forcibly converted to Islam, their conversion does not lead to their freedom. Mauritanian anti-slavery campaigner Boubacar Messaoud explains: “It’s like having sheep or goats. If a woman is a slave, her descendants are slaves.” Anti-slavery crusaders like Messaoud have great difficulty working against this attitude because it is rooted in the Qur’an and Muhammad’s example. The Muslim prophet Muhammad owned slaves, and like the Bible, the Qur’an takes the existence of slavery for granted, even as it enjoins the freeing of slaves under certain circumstances, such as the breaking of an oath: “Allah will not call you to account for what is futile in your oaths, but He will call you to account for your deliberate oaths: for expiation, feed ten indigent persons, on a scale of the average for the food of your families; or clothe them; or give a slave his freedom” (5:89). But while the freeing of a slave or two here and there is encouraged, the institution itself is never questioned. The Qur’an even gives a man permission to have sexual relations with his slave girls as well as with his wives: “The believers must (eventually) win through, those who humble themselves in their prayers; who avoid vain talk; who are active in deeds of charity; who abstain from sex, except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess, for (in their case) they are free from blame…” (23:1-6). A Muslim is not to have sexual relations with a woman who is married to someone else – except a slave girl: “And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess. It is a decree of Allah for you” (4:24). In the past, as today, most slaves in Islam were non-Muslims who had been captured during jihad warfare. The pioneering scholar of the treatment of non-Muslims in Islamic societies, Bat Ye’or, explains the system that developed out of jihad conquest: The jihad slave system included contingents of both sexes delivered annually in conformity with the treaties of submission by sovereigns who were tributaries of the caliph. When Amr conquered Tripoli (Libya) in 643, he forced the Jewish and Christian Berbers to give their wives and children as slaves to the Arab army as part of their jizya [tax on non-Muslims]. From 652 until its conquest in 1276,Nubia was forced to send an annual contingent of slaves to Cairo. Treaties concluded with the towns of Transoxiana, Sijistan, Armenia, and Fezzan (Maghreb) under the Umayyads and Abbasids stipulated an annual dispatch of slaves from both sexes. However, the main sources for the supply of slaves remained the regular raids on villages within the dar-al-harb [House of War, i.e., non-Islamic regions] and the military expeditions which swept more deeply into the infidel lands, emptying towns and provinces of their inhabitants.[1] Historian Speros Vryonis observes that “since the beginning of the Arab razzias [raids] into the land of Rum [the Byzantine Empire], human booty had come to constitute a very important portion of the spoils.” As they steadily conquered more and more of Anatolia, the Turks reduced many of the Greeks and other non-Muslims there to slave status: “They enslaved men, women, and children from all major urban centers and from the countryside where the populations were defenseless.”[2] The Indian historian K. Yet while the European and American slave trade get stern treatment attention from historians (as well as from reparations advocates and guilt-ridden politicians), the Islamic slave trade, which actually lasted longer and brought suffering to a larger number of people, is virtually ignored. (This fact magnifies the irony of Islam being presented to American blacks as the egalitarian alternative to the “white man’s slave religion” of Christianity.) While historians estimate that the transatlantic slave trade, which operated between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, involved around 10.5 million people, the Islamic slave trade in the Sahara, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean areas began in the seventh century and lasted into the nineteenth, and involved 17 million people.[6] And when pressure came to end slavery, it moved from Christendom into Islam, not the other way around. There was no Muslim William Wilberforce or William Lloyd Garrison. In fact, when the British government in the nineteenth century adopted the view of Wilberforce and the other abolitionists and began to put pressure on pro-slavery regimes, the Sultan of Morocco was incredulous. “The traffic in slaves,” he noted, “is a matter on which all sects and nations have agreed from the time of the sons of Adam...up to this day.” He said that he was “not aware of its being prohibited by the laws of any sect” and that the very idea that anyone would question its morality was absurd: “No one need ask this question, the same being manifest to both high and low and requires no more demonstration than the light of day.”[7] However, it was not the unanimity of human practice, but the words of the Qur’an and Muhammad that were decisive in stifling abolitionist movements within the Islamic world. Slavery was abolished only as a result of Western pressure; the Arab Muslim slave trade in Africa was ended by the force of British arms in the nineteenth century.

Besides being practiced more or less openly today in Sudan and Mauritania, there is evidence that slavery still continues beneath the surface in some majority-Muslim countries as well -- notably Saudi Arabia, which only abolished slavery in 1962, Yemen and Oman, both of which ended legal slavery in 1970, and Niger, which didn’t abolish slavery until 2004. In Niger, the ban is widely ignored, and as many as one million people remain in bondage. Slaves are bred, often raped, and generally treated like animals.

A shadow cast by the strength and perdurability of Islamic slavery can be seen in instances where Muslims have managed to import this institution to the United States. A Saudi named Homaidan Al-Turki, for instance, was sentenced in September 2006 to 27 years to life in prison, for keeping a woman as a slave in his home in Colorado. For his part, Al-Turki claimed that he was a victim of anti-Muslim bias. He told the judge: “Your honor, I am not here to apologize, for I cannot apologize for things I did not do and for crimes I did not commit. The state has criminalized these basic Muslim behaviors. Attacking traditional Muslim behaviors was the focal point of the prosecution.” The following month, an Egyptian couple living in Southern California received a fine and prison terms, to be followed by deportation, after pleading guilty to holding a ten-year-old girl as a slave. And in January 2007, an attaché of the Kuwaiti embassy in Washington, Waleed Al Saleh, and his wife were charged with keeping three Christian domestic workers from India in slave-like conditions in al-Saleh’s Virginia home. One of the women remarked: “I believed that I had no choice but to continue working for them even though they beat me and treated me worse than a slave.” All this indicates that the problem of Islamic slavery is not restricted to recent events in the Sudan; it is much larger and more deeply rooted. The United Nations and human rights organizations have noted the phenomenon, but nevertheless little has been done to move decisively against those who still hold human beings in bondage, or aid or tolerate others doing so. The UN has tried to place peacekeeping forces in Darfur, over the objections of the Sudanese government, but its remonstrations against slavery in Sudan and elsewhere have likewise not resulted in significant government action against the practice. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have also noted the problem, but as HRW observes, “the government of Sudan has stonewalled on the issue of slavery, claiming it was a matter of rival tribes engaging in hostage taking, over which it had little control. That is simply untrue, as myriad reports coming out of southern Sudan have made abundantly clear.” For Islamic slavery to disappear, a powerful state would have to move against it decisively, not with mere words, and accept no equivocation of half-measures. In today’s international geopolitical climate, nothing could be less likely.

As previously reported by China Confidential, Beijing intends to expose the export by US companies of recycled waste vegetable oil and slaugtherhouse animal fat renderings to Asia and Latin America for use as animal feed additives. The firms, which control the collection of recycled restaurant grease in the US, are legally prohibited from selling such products into the US food chain because of the fear of mad-cow disease from the animal components.

The US exports could be processed into biodiesel; but relatively expensive collection and refining methods make foreign food-chain markets more attractive to the US rendering and waste oil collection giants.

Voice of America (VOA) reported Thursday that an American official accused China of failing to do all it should to stop militarily significant supplies from reaching Iran, even though China voted for United Nations sanctions aimed at preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

Ambassador Don Mahley, who is Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for international security and nonproliferation, told the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission that Chinese companies sold items to Iran that the United States considers banned under UN resolutions aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons capability.

Commonly called the China Commission, the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission is a Congressional advisory body that was created in the year 2000 to monitor, investigate, and submit to Congress an annual report on the national security implications of the bilateral trade and economic relationship between the US and China, and to provide recommendations, where appropriate, to Congress for legislative and administrative action.

Mahley spoke on the first day of a two-day public hearing in Washington on China’s Proliferation and Impact of Trade Policy on Defense Industries in the US and China. The hearing will examine the impact of China’s proliferation practices on US national security, China’s compliance with its own nonproliferation laws and regulations and international proliferation norms, the development of indigenous defense industrial capacity in China, and the impact of trade practices and manufacturing in China on the US defense industrial base.

"There have been transfers, which we have addressed with the Chinese, in which we believe that the transfers were not permitted by UN Security Council resolutions 1737 and 1747," Mahley said.

He added that Beijing does not dispute that the transfers occurred, but differs with Washington about whether the transfers violate the UN resolutions. Mahley efused to publicly name specific equipment or technology, but he said they were "involved" with Iran's missile and nuclear programs.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense David Sedney testified that the Chinese government has taken what he called a legalistic approach to the UN resolutions, which do not call for a blanket ban on such transfers to Iran.

"Very clearly, the transfers that Ambassador Mahley's talking about are things that are not consistent with the spirit of those U.N. resolutions and the purpose and intent of them," Sedney said.

Sedney also questioned Chinese sales of conventional arms to Iran.

"Supplying conventional weapons to Iran, at a time when Iran is supplying and funding groups in Iraq, Lebanon and Afghanistan, that are confronting and sometimes killing American troops and our allies, that is not the activities that I would expect of a strategic or of a cooperative partner," he said.

Sedney also highlighted US concerns that Beijing is allowing transfers of what he described as a wide variety of dual-use and conventional technologies to countries like Burma, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.
