Last night Katy flew back from D.C. Sometime during her journey her cell phone rang but because it was turned off for the travel she missed the call. The call that was missed was the doctor's office calling to say that Stephen's test results were in and the doctor wished to discuss them with Katy. That's not the call you want to miss.

After Katy got home she emailed me the news along with suppositions on what it meant that the doctor wanted to speak with her and her grief for having missed that all important call. While Katy slept, I was reported for work and opened up the email that could potentially change our family. A day makes all the difference. Yesterday Katy and I were talking about monuments and the Smithsonian, now she slept and I wondered if we'd be talking about gene therapy and protein replacements instead. I looked at my watch and new it would be at least eight more long hours before I could talk to her back home.

I told my co-worker Karen that the results were in but unknown by us and told her, "Today's going to be a long day." She replied with an empathetic "I know". Her Den Mother instincts kicked in and while I was in my cube she quietly let the other workers know what was going on and my church pal Temaki checked on me a couple of times along with another friend bringing me lunch. I must say trying to focus today was nearly impossible. I caved finally and logged onto a cystic fibrosis website and read for the 10th time all the facts I could as if somehow that would change the results.

I then wrote an email to Katy and recommended a few things. First were questions to ask the doctor. Now Katy's a doctor herself, but it made me feel good to "lead" and write something. Second were suggestions for Katy personally. Of which, the first was that we should worship today intentionally after the results come in. Plan what we were each going to do before we found out and make time for it. The other agreement we made was that we'd show gratitude and try to worship by agreeing to participate in a clinical trial. The website said that many promising research is languishing because of a lack of participation, even in studies of healthy people. We can help with that. Finally I gave her some advice, based on having received and delivering more bad news more than I ever cared to. Then we waited. And waited. And waited.

At 8 AM sharp, Katy was on the phone with the doctor's office. The receptionist gave us voice mail. Then at almost 9, the doctor's still not in and a not so friendly receptionist admonished Katy that they would call us. Finally I went to dinner. Katy was about to go to the gym. While I was gone, Katy gets the call. GOOD NEWS! He does not have the disease and the test results are favorable. Katy, unable to call, emailed me the best news ever.

When I got back to work, I saw in my in-box a message from her entitled "Test Results". Nervously I clicked. Thankfully my dear Army wife used BLUF - bottom line up front, and got the good news out fast, then the details. Otherwise I would not have been able to handle it. I was nearly shouting in the palace, and keep in mind this is the room where "love, love, love" and "rub, rub, rub" bounced all over the place. I ran over and Temaki saw me smiling and running and celebrated with me, then I told the others. What a difference a day makes!

Wow...praise the Lord. So that trial is behind us and we are one big day closer to home. Thanks for your prayers, advice, and patience while walking through this with us. We know life has its challenges ahead, Iraq has been one, and so has this, but we're so grateful for this cup to be spared us. More about today on the next post!

“Marine boy” and two-time Olympic medalist swimmer (one gold, one silver at the Beijing Games) Park Tae-hwan is teaming up with Yoon Eun-hye to sell clothing for the apparel company Basic House. They recently coupled up to shoot photos for the winter line.

The clothing brand expressed a desire to go for high-profile stars to head their winter campaign, and I guess pairing a gold medalist with one of the most popular young actresses around oughtta achieve that nicely.

I sometimes don't download files into the PC after a photo shoot. Hey, there's still lots of space in the card... so I malas lah.

One find day, I removed the card for a few days. When I re-inserted it into the camera, there was no photos in it despite it showing less memory space. I suspected some thing wrong... but the heck with it, I was rushing off to the Viennese Ball practice. So I went 'round shooting the practice session. Setibanya di rumah... I couldn't open the files. Had to connect through the camera and copy each file one-by-one. Then try to open them to check their integrity.

Well, the Viennese Ball practice photos are all A-OK. But photos taken during Hui Shan's wedding was corrupted beyond my salvage. Arrrrgh...!!

In desperation, I connected my Nexto back-up HDD to the PC and check if any of previous photos were backed-up. Nasib baik I've downloaded the files. I tell you... the Nexto is a superb device.

See the CF card being inserted into it for back-up/transfer purpose? There's another slot at the left side (of the device) for Memory Sticks and SD Cards; and a USB port at the bottom to back-up from cameras or USB sticks. And look ma... only one button. Every thing is done through that 1 button! One Ring Button to rule them all!

I've tried backing-up files from my phone into it. It works! Though it only backed-up the MicroSD in the phone. It can even transfer files from the HDD (inside the device) to USB sticks or memory cards --- saves me the trouble of burning CDs for everyone.

Beside wiping your arse after you poo, there's nothing the Nexto can't do. As long as the other device has a USB plug, it will work its magic. (If your arse has a USB port, it'll gladly back-up your arse too! X^D ) And, oh... the speed in which it would back-up your arse...

It's a d@mn useful device, considering that flash memories are very prone to data corruption. While other external HDD casing will only cost about 80 Ringgit, the Nexto will burn a 499 Ringgit hole in your wallet for the SATA version (without HDD) from Shashinki.com.

In drama "East of Eden” (Written by Lee Na-Yeon-sook/ Director Kim Jin, Choi Byung-gil) acted as DONGCHEOL, SSH has been catching the heart of the drama lovers. Due to his popularity, now SSH has been requested to endorse 8 brands. Those brand’s line up are: Cosmetic, car, Appliance, Clothing, Construction, Sports are few to mention. While, SSH agreed to filming the CF but under several condition which is to put the drama as his priority & the CF filming will be adjust to ‘East of Eden” shooting schedule.

Kalimantan terkenal sebagai salah satu pulau terkaya di Indonesia. Dari sektor kehutanan misalnya, hasil hutan terutama kayu, menyumbang tinggi pada pendapatan nasional. Berbagai kekayaan tambang dan mineral lain seperti minyak, gas, emas dan batubara juga menghiasi pulau ini. Namun sayang, kemiskinan di pulau ini masih tercatat cukup tinggi. Data 2004 dari berbagai sumber menunjukkan angka kemiskinan di masing-masing propinsi berkisar antara 12 – 30% dari total jumlah penduduk di tiap propinsi.

Sebagai respon dari isu kemiskinan di Kalimantan, berbagai upaya dan cara telah dirintis oleh berbagai pihak untuk peningkatan penghidupan yang lebih baik bagi masyarakat miskin. Program Kehutanan Multipihak atau Multistakehoder Forestry Program di Kalimantan misalnya, berfokus pada pengembangan usaha kecil masyarakat dan unsur-unsur pendukungnya untuk meningkatkan penghidupan masyarakat miskin sekitar hutan. Program-program yang dijalankan oleh banyak Lembaga Swadaya Masyarakat di pulau ini juga banyak yang bertujuan untuk memberi derajat hidup yang lebih baik bagi masyarakat Kalimantan. Singkatnya, telah banyak program penguatan masyarakat miskin yang dirintis dan dilakukan.

Saat menjalankan berbagai program di lapangan, patut disadari isu keberlanjutan merupakan isu penting yang seringkali menjadi titik lemah keberlangsungan program yang telah dijalankan. Banyak program penguatan masyarakat miskin tergantung dari ada tidaknya donor. Donor berhenti, program tersebut juga mati. Padahal, program tersebut baru berjalan, misalnya. Selain itu, dan ini yang lebih penting, keberlanjutan juga bisa menjadi tanda berhasil tidaknya penguatan yang dijalankan bersama komunitas di suatu tempat. Lembaga pendukung dan komunitas memiliki daya sendiri pada saat mereka sudah mulai lepas dari donor luar. Keberlanjutan dan keberdayaanpun menjadi dua sisi dari mata uang.

Beberapa lembaga dan kelompok masyarakat di Kalimantan secara cerdas sudah melakukan beberapa upaya keberlanjutan dan keberdayaan. Credit union menjadi contoh yang menarik. Di Taman Nasional Kutai Kalimantan Timur misalnya, beberapa kelompok masyarakat mulai melakukan rintisan kemandirian sendiri dengan cara mengelola usahanya secara lebih baik dan tertata. Lembaga keuangan yang bisa mendukung modal dan menjadi tempat penyimpan keuntungan menjadi dibutuhkan. Credit Union pun didirikan dan mulai berkembang. Mulai beroperasi sejak Agustus 2006, dalam dua bulan paling tidak lembaga ini memiliki aset sekitar Rp 40 juta.

Contoh lain adalah kelompok usaha petani rotan di Kutai Barat yang bekerja bersama Yayasan Sistem Hutan Kemasyarakatan (SHK) Kalimantan Timur. Saat membutuhkan suntikan modal, Credit Union Sempekat Ningka Olo (CUSNO) yang ada di sekitar menjadi pendukung. Tidaklah heran karena CUSNO yang didirikan oleh para petani dan masyarakat Kutai Barat dengan dukungan SHK Kaltim memiliki aset yang lumayan mencengangkan. Lembaga yang didirikan Juli 1999 ini sampai dengan Agustus 2006 memiliki aset Rp 6,7 milyar dan anggota lebih dari 1700 orang.

Contoh menarik lainnya adalah Credit Union di wilayah Dayak pegunungan Meratus, Kalimantan Selatan yang didirikan November 2002. Meski terletak jauh di pelosok yang tinggi, Credit Union Bintang Karantika Meratus memiliki lebih dari 600 anggota dan beroperasi di lebih 70 balai atau kampung adat Dayak Meratus. Asetnya sampai Oktober 2006 tercatat lebih dari Rp 2 milyar. Keberadaan lembaga keuangan ini dirasa telah banyak menolong masyarakat asli di sini, baik bagi yang membutuhkan uang di masa sulit, untuk sekolah anak maupun penambah modal usaha.

Di masa depan, perkembangan credit union yang berlangsung manis di banyak tempat di Kalimantan ini bisa jadi cikal bakal Community Foundation (CF) yang kuat. Dana solidaritas atau dana-dana sejenis di beberapa credit union, jika dikumpulkan bisa menjadi modal awal bagi foundation tersebut. Credit union tetap melayani simpan pinjam dengan nilai tambah pengumpul dana bagi CF. Sementara itu, CF bisa menjadi pengelola dan penyalur hibah bagi kegiatan-kegiatan penguatan dan pengembangan masyarakat. Sudah tentu, CF mesti dikelola secara transparan dan profesional dan diawasi oleh masyarakat pemberi dana dan pihak-pihak lain terkait.

Bayangkan, betapa menariknya, jika upaya penguatan masyarakat dan pengentasan kemiskinan di Kalimantan dilakukan sendiri secara bergotong royong, dari dana masyarakat itu sendiri. Program penguatan tidak lagi banyak bergantung pada donor luar, pemberdayaanpun bisa lebih terjamin. Mungkinkah ini bisa terwujud?
