Join the choir! And if you can't sing, join the bell choir! And if you can't do that, then do SOMETHING with a group of others wanting to do SOMETHING together!

Being a part of the community it what life is all about. It's what keeps you young. When you are working to help others you don't have as much time to work on your own worries and troubles. And when you allow others to help you, you are giving them a gift as well.

The quilts pictured in this post were made as class examples for the "Sunshine and Flowers" class I taught this last Spring at Sugar n' Spice in Morton. They were also a kind of Lenten Project that I took on for myself.

The Celtic Cross, above and to the left, is pretty self explanatory. The piece above it represents (starting from the top), Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They are both owned by Linda Herrin, owner of the Sugar n' Spice quilt shop in Morton.

The quilt to the right remains in my private collection. I am very attached to it. I wish I had a better camera so I could do the colors justice. The purples and sea blues are beautiful.

The unfinished banner, to the left, I intended to have finished by Easter morning...but I just couldn't seem to get the angel's hand right. But the other morning at church I noticed that Father T. was holding up three fingers for the blessing instead of the two fingers that I was trying to portray. So I've brought this quilt top out again so I can give it another try.

Unlike the quietly serene colors of the quilts above, this quilt is jarringly joyous in its colors. While I was working on this quilt, I was very worried that I had chosen colors that would be much too bold for our quietly conservative church. HA! Was I ever wrong! When I arrived on Easter morning for my first Easter at St. Timothy's, I was greeted by a huge riot of color in the massive display of flowers the Altar Guild Ladies had artfully arranged.

The reference to "animal magnetism" and the two Indian quotes call to mind the Native American practice of raising totem poles as symbols of kinship and profound spiritual encounters. I see a hazy outline of a future (mesmerizing?) exercise that includes tarotpsych readings interpreted as totems - which is sort of the way I tend to interpret the last 4 cards in the Celtic Cross spread, anyway. Animals often serve as important gateway/guides/catalysts for healing with people and situations that might otherwise be unapproachable, such as with autistic children...
The Celtic cross is one of the more popular layouts to use when asking the Tarot for guidance to a s

The Celtic cross is one of the more popular layouts to use when asking the Tarot for guidance to a specific question. Actually, any deck of cards can be placed in this spread.

Card #5 (above card #1) has been long associated with the Potential future. This card will reveal to you what "might" happen in regards to your question based on the action or lack of action represented by Card #6 (to the right of card #1), not shown in image.

I used to read Card #5 as the Distant Future card and that means the development after the manifestation of the Outcome card #10. As always it is a personal choice and for that matter the core positions vary considerably as well in the laying of the cards. The Staff cards (7, 8, 9, 10) have stayed pretty much the same except card #9 which traditionally represented hopes/fears but can also be read to be the immediate influence leading to the Outcome.

Crossing Influence card #2 - Does this card contain positive free flowing energy or is the energy withheld, stagnant or less positive? Card #2 will reveal your opportunities or challenges in reaching the "answer" in card #10 - the Outcome.

There are many factors to consider when interpreting the Celtic cross. I think what is important is to follow some sort of guideline that you feel the most comfortable with. This does not mean you can't change your interpretation of the positions in the Celtic cross when you do another reading.

Many readers, including myself believe that the cards will tell you what it is you need to know with respect to the question. Sometimes the cards are way off and there is little sense to be made regarding the question. In instances like this a more open approach is necessary such as a willingness to "look" at what you might be missing is so far as the lessons and principles of the cards, especially the Major Arcana.

*Often, it is not about what you are asking*

*it is about what you are not asking*

Interpretation of study layout... ...To Follow...

4 of Wands - Crossing card

This card would definitely be a good one because it indicates a victory of sorts. There will be reason to celebrate or to feel as though you have made great progress in achievements.

3 of Swords- Crowning card. Probable future.

This card shows a disappointment in some respects but more on an intellectual level. The ego gets a beating and it feels as though it hurts but if you look closely at the 3 of swords in the layout, there is no dripping blood to signify a deep wound. It is raining in the background and this can mean something might come up temporarily to create a setback.

When analyzing this position- card #6 should be studied. The reason for this is because the 3 of swords is the result of the pending imminent circumstances which could lead to the manifestation of the disappointment.

You can avert or bypass many situations by taking the advice of the cards especially if they appear negative in nature. However, there is a thing called destiny. And much of destiny is rooted in your subconscious.

9 of Pentacles - Outcome

Who wouldn't want this as a result? It implies abundance. When you have more than you can handle you can become emotionally attached to those "things". There is a strong suggestion that there will be a promising financially linked result.

One important thing to remember is that even though the 3 of swords may come to pass it is only the stage before you step into the garden of abundance. Many times in life a huge setback is not understood at the time but months later it all makes sense. :)

The 9 of Pentacles is about relying on yourself. There is both a positive and negative connotation to the previous statement. Does this mean help from others is not forthcoming? Does it mean that you will have to count on just yourself?

The crossing card shows a happy outcome but something will probably come up (3 of swords) that looks like a goal may not be achieved in the way one wants. All indication is by the last card that the goal will be reached within the time frame designated prior to the laying of the cards.

What else could the 9 of pentacles suggest?

The lady holds a falcon. Symbolically, this bird represents visions and wisdom. How badly do you want your goal? The falcon has the reputation of one pointed focus & thus can kill at command. How far will you go to get what you want? The lady in the garden did not get this garden by pure chance, she worked very hard (8 of pentacles previous card) and she had to learn many tools of the trade so to speak. It all boils down to life-tools.

The 9 of pentacles in it's highest expression is all about getting what you want.

Robin Wood Tarot illustrated to demonstrate the topic of the post & for it's artistic symbolism.

.The Tarot Reading was laid out in April and I will review some of the cards to determine how they manifested. It has been nearly 2 months and since the Celtic cross was done. The purpose of this post is to explore the cards in direct reference to what has already come to pass for the person - female D.

.The cards in the image belong to the Robin Wood deck. They are shown to demonstrate this particular reading and to display the beauty of the art work.

.This is one of my more regular decks that I use but I only use it when the person has a totally direct question, such as in this case.

.The question is, "will I find a new job?" It seems this type of question is ever so popular these days and the index of change in career or jobs is very high. Some of this could be because people stay at jobs out of pure financial necessity and become completely unhappy as time goes on. I think that much of this unhappiness stems from within and the job merely reflects the state of mind or attitude of the person. It does boil down to addressing one's self worth.... and that is whole other topic to write about :)

.There are 2 cards that stand out in this reading. The last card Queen of Swords, the crowing card 10 of Swords and maybe the (hopes and fears spot) The Moon.

.Note: Female D was unemployed at the time of the reading. Before I continue, I will say that the question was answered within 1 lunar month of this layout. Female D is now working at a new job.

.The only card that would give any indication that the answer is "yes" to her question is the 9 of Cups in the 8th spot. This spot would represent the employer who hired her. It does not describe the employer but the card does grant D.'s wish. After all, it is the wish card. How lucky is that!

.Traditionally, the Queen of Swords is not the best card in position 10 representing the outcome. After reviewing the cards I came to the conclusion that the associated meanings of this queen do mean responsibility and taking thing seriously. Accepting a new job is a responsibility and usually the person is very serious at the beginning when they are getting trained.

.The Queen also suggested that D. will be in a position of much "intellectual" or "mental" pressure which she can handle. The Queen of Swords has tough skin.

.The crowning card (10 of swords) is suppose to represent the probable future and what could have happened. I don't always read card 5 like this but in this case I did because I wanted to point out how important it was to learn and put into practical practice the lessons of card 6, The Chariot.

.I have detailed the Chariot in another post by saying.

The CHARIOT card suggests mastery over emotions. The balancing of a situation that could at any given moment be out of complete control. When I see this card in position #1 I know the person is relying heavily on “faith”. It does no good to whip conditions into submission and obedience because those same conditions can carry you down a road you are not prepared to go on.

.In this reading the Chariot is not in position 1 but the same "meaning" applied to position 6. It was important for D. to remain centered during her job search and through the disappointments she experienced by getting rejections or received absolutely no responses to resume that she sent out.

.I'm not going in any particular order of post-interpreting this reading because I want to target the significant cards.

.Card 2- Page of Pentacles and Card 7- 8 of Pentacles are good indicators of learning a new job or skills. This was an evident clue that a new job was coming.

.The 10 of swords in position 5 shows what could have manifested if D. lost control of the horses (emotions, drive, focus) in the Chariot card. This is not to say that this card's traditional meaning (defeat) is not looming somewhere in the future. It is a card of intellectual defeat or predicts a danger of information overload.

.Why did I add another card beside the Queen of Swords? Well, mainly because I wanted to know more about the Queen card. Was she to represent D., a friend or a foe? Or did she depict personality traits?

.TWO of CUPs confirmed the the negotiation of the new job. The Queen also represented the female employer who hammered out the details surrounding the new job. She was a woman with great authority who was very business minded. It was a mutually agreed decision.

And what about the Moon card? I use the Moon as a time marker - 1 lunar month. I think it is vital for D. not to let her imagination get the better of her because what looks good on the surface could ... lead to the development of the 10 of swords. In other words, D. needs to remain positive and to be very careful of her attitude towards her new job. Now is not the time to fear, doubt, or be insecure regarding her potential and natural skills.

Celtic Cross - Radiant Tarot

I want to share some insights regarding some of the cards in the Celtic cross layout. Overall, this reading is filled with higher energy cards. There are 5 major arcana which indicates external forces at work. This means that the reading is not geared towards mundane situations even though a mundane question may have been asked.

When there is a preponderance of Majors the suggestion is that "lessons" need to be learned. The teachings of the Keys are targeting your inner world.

I look at the Majors as TRIGGER cards somewhat similar to the Simple Trigger Layout.

The image below is the central part of the Celtic cross. I will be focusing on the Chariot, World, Ace of Wands and Sun cards. In the upper left image you can see all of the cards, including the 4 of Cups as the result/outcome to the readings.

Position 1- CHARIOT. The 1st spot describes the aura around the question or the current energies surrounding the person. It can reveal their current state of mind. The CHARIOT card suggests mastery over emotions. The balancing of a situation that could at any given moment be out of complete control. When I see this card in position #1 I know the person is relying heavily on "faith". It does no good to whip conditions into submission and obedience because those same conditions can carry you down a road you are not prepared to go on.

Position 2- WORLD. The card of completion. An ending of the cycle of a situation or emotional attitude. Traditionally this card means freedom of mundane worry. There is also balance within this card. The 4 corner display symbols of the elements. As the crossing card, the World will lend a positive influence to the remaining cards. Even though the 4 of cups is the last card, symbolically the "4" indicates emotional balance despite the image of the bored male sitting under a tree contemplating the cups.

Position 6 - ACE of WANDS. The beginning of action. In this spot the released energy from the single wand will be experienced because of the energy (lessons) emitted from the CHARIOT and WORLD cards. The new birth will come through the Ace. A new direction is necessary because the emotional power of the CHARIOT cannot be contained much longer. You can only control things for so long. Unfortunately much energy is expended when you try and control, even your own self. It should be as effortless as the figure within the wreath in the WORLD card.

TIMING. When an Ace falls in the 6th spot it is a very good indicator of the time frame for the entire reading. It would be about 13 weeks - a season.

Some readers use the 10th card to determine the time. The 4 of Cups would be the 4th week into the summer. If the Ace of Wands represents the spring, then it would make sense to say that 13 weeks + 4 weeks would be the more precise time frame. Within 17 weeks.

Position 8 - SUN. This is the "yes" card. No matter where the teachings of the SUN card fall you can expect an uplifting experience. Notice that the 4 of Swords is in the 7th spot. Another card of balance, this time on the intellectual plane. A card of meditative thinking. What has begun in the Ace will require some quiet contemplation. The knight will awaken due to the warm rays of the sun. It is a sign that the new beginning will be surrounded by wholesome happiness.

Generally this spot is to represent the environment or other people's thoughts. In this reading, I see it as the next step in the development of the person getting the reading. There is purity in the seeds of a new beginning. There is hope.

The Magician in position 9 will pick up the wand of the Ace and create all the circumstances which will eventually lead to the completion (WORLD) of the situation that is facing the person getting the reading done (CHARIOT).

Where does the 4 of cups fit into all of this? As an outcome card it does suggest a similar reevaluation process as depicted in the 4 of swords. I see the Wand of the Ace as the tree which supports the man. There are choices ahead of him and no matter what he chooses, the lessons of the WORLD card will come to pass. The person getting the reading will have the rays of the sun instead of the lightning of the TOWER card to experience the ending of one particular cycle which can involve a situation or an inner process.

Dead Ringer, designer of fine & funky custom made skull rings, dragon rings and Celtica, sent out their e-letter this week announcing a price increase effective Friday, June 13th and the opportunity to score a one-of-a-kind piece while the prices are still at 2005 levels. Skull ring aficionados must visit the website - their skulls are many, varied and awesome, ya hear me? Examples:

Mark and Steve designed a dragon ring for me last year that I still LUV and wear every day. The style I had chosen was too bulky for my ring size so they came up with this:

Notice the beautiful hand-made wooden box the ring came in. The mermaid was free-hand burned into the wood by Steve specially as a happy surprise for me. I was Traveling Mermaid at the time. Click that link to see more pix of the ring and a post about New Zealand, where DR is located.

I've been seriously jonesing for their Celtic cross for about a year now. Maybe now's the time to scratch that itch.

Below you will see part of a Tarot reading from the February 10/08 entry involving Veronica.

This post is a follow up to the original question, “will Veronica go back to her previous work environment?”. I can do this today because I have received confirmation as to the unfolding of this reading. It is now approaching 3 months since this Tarot reading was done. Today's analysis of this reading is done in yellow. ----------------->

card 9. - 5 of Cups. Many authors say that this position is also an influence closely connected the final card. Some read this card as Hopes & Fears. It really depends on how you feel like reading it. If you have a more uniformed technique when you read cards then stick to it. Without any doubt in my mind, I read card 9 as the outcome of the influence of card 8 - 7 of Wands* reversed.

Initially I feel that things will not work out [this was true] as originally planned but the river does flow in a continuous manner.[an opportunity did manifest connected with the original hope] How is that connected to the obvious traditional meaning of regret or missed opportunity within this card? I choose not to read the overturned cups because I am drawn to the 2 individuals that are walking away towards the river which is in the background of the image. [as I think about what I wrote here and knowing what I know now- it is a by default situation]

As a fear card- Veronica is afraid things will not work out and she will regret her decision.

As a hope card- Veronica is hoping that she will not have any regrets leaving her current “secure” job.

card 8. -7 of Wands* REVERSED. The spot of what others think or will do. The external influences related to the question. Reversed energy in this spot would typically suggest a delay or problem. [there was a long delay for sure]This card is generally positive in it’s upright position. Everyone reads reversals differently. The core meaning is still there and it is the energy that needs to be released constructively if that meaning is positive. If the reversed card is negative in nature to begin with, then the reversal might be a relief..............The arrow that the angel is aiming is headed right for the male standing on the mound. He had a slight advantage. It seems to me the Angel’s arrow will throw him off that mound into the reversal position & in that process he will lose the only weapon he had in his hands. [what this means is that Veronica did not get the position she originally applied for]

What this insight could mean is that the opportunity [it was a related-opportunity] has no other competition, meaning no one else would apply for it. [double ditto] There is no need to fight for it.Has the threat of the 6 other wands been removed? Veronica should not let anyone take advantage of her. I want to read the reversal of the 7 of Wands* to indicate that Veronica’s position is strong and she will have to act quick.

card 10. - The Knight of Wands. As the answer or outcome, here we have a feeling of speed again. [speed in the Tarot ended up being a "sudden" opportunity at a moments notice but about 10 weeks later ] Change is imminent. Whatever the outcome of this situation around Veronica is - it will be resolved abruptly. [ditto] Will she return to her previous work environment? The final card strongly suggests a shift in the wind.[the shift was another opportunity]

News is coming that will require some fast thinking. [fast thinking was the answer Veronica had to give on the spot] I did not find a yes or a no answer within the Knight of Wands. [there was no yes or no answer because the Tarot could not give specific details around the way the situation would manifest. The Knight of Wands as the answer card states a positive direction connected to the original question, however, there was a twist.] (see Shustah foxes post).

Additional Information: Many readers draw a clarification card when a Court appears as the outcome card. Some readers take the last card and do another Celtic cross to gain more information around the person represented by this card. Is it a person, though?I think I will draw one more card, even though I have already put the cards away. The card I chose is The SUN.

A wonderful clarification card. Key #19 is definitely a YES. This card also symbolizes studies, books and learning and ties in very nicely with card #2 - 8 of Pentacles. The SUN is the only Major Arcana and the best one at that. [the studies, books and learning involves the training which includes a substantial amount of paperwork. ]

A few combinations

7 of Wands Reversed + SUN = the advantage or opportunity is larger than you can imagine- [ditto]

8 of Wands + SUN = very very good news [ditto]

5 of Cups + SUN = despite any regrets or disappointments the rays of the Sun will bring you happiness [ditto]

7 of Cups + SUN = the right choice is made [it wasn't really a choice made by Veronica, it was made for her, but she still had to agree]

2 of Pentacles + SUN = an increase in finances [anything is an increase when the flow is minimal]

8 of Pentacles + SUN = being happy with what is studied or learned [hasn't happened yet as I write this]

Have you ever noticed the similarity between TBN’s Crest and the Coat of Arms for Her Majesty’s Government?

I know the coat of arms has a unicorn, but I would go so far as to say I think they placed the horse's head in just the right position that the dark border of the banner coming around the crest almost looks like a horn. You definitely have to look twice to make sure there’s no horn intentionally drawn there.

Interesting thing about the TBN crest, the descending dove (occultic symbol) and the Celtic cross (honors the "sun god"). The banners read Rex regum et fidelum, (I can only assume that is the correct construction.) which literally translates: “The king rule and faithful.”

Call me crazy, but I found it interesting for their to be such a close connection between TBN and British royalty.

Newbie tattoo on my back...It's not that big, I swear!

Like most people in my generation, I am in love with Tattoos! Have 'em, Love 'em, want more! As I say this I have the newest one, of six, covered with A&D ointment and saran wrap, on my back between my shoulder blades! A cute Celtic cross which almost perfectly matches hubbies (slight differences in color as a tribute to each other). LOVE IT!

But I was not the only one getting it done this past Wednesday afternoon! 2 Other people were there and they seemed to have some tattooing miles on their arms alone! But they looked great (the tattoos, not the people attached). My sisters stopped by to see the tattooing take place and they both started itching for another (they have 7, 8 or 9 between the 2 of them) and I was egging them on! Neither fell to my button pushing but I know that they will be back shortly to get another themselves....

First thing I did on Thursday morning was to show off my tattoo....to who of course by my dear friend who shall remain nameless because her first words were "O.U.C.H!!!!! Did you get that on your back? You know that I feel a certain amount of obligation to remind you that at some point you are going to be 80 :-0! You know about me and tattoos...ouch, ouch, ouch!"

And of course that was the response I was looking for because it makes her squeamish :-) And my other tattoo loving friend, Barbara was so excited when I showed her! Tattoos are fun and pretty and I do remind myself that I will be 80 one day (I won't be seeing anything by then).

So the first thing I did today was to show another dear friend, Mary, who like the first un-named friend does not have a huge threshold for pain (5 kids, come on!!). She told me how beautiful it was and told me she liked it! She just couldn't handle the pain! Mary asked me if they numbed the location of the tattoo for you! She gave me a good laugh this morning!

Aside from the grotesqueness of the shop owner and the other tattoo artist (very vulgar), the trip was well worth it in the end! Well with that being said....until next time! I love Tattoos!!

I tend to ask the same question (previous post) using several decks that are non related in system. I find it very interesting to compare the readings after a certain time has lapsed. My main curiosity is in the manifestation process and which deck provides the most accurate interpretation.

The interpretation is lengthy but it is done to demonstrate what goes through my mind when reading these cards. I am using the Tarot of the New Vision in the traditional Celtic cross layout. This deck gives a different artistic slant to the cards and induces other feelings when using just the imagery. ( & keeping the core meanings in mind). I have shown two separate images below, the center cross and the staff.

Also, I reverse 3 cards while I shuffle. In this layout position 8 holds the Reversal energy of the 7 of Wands.

card 1. 2 Pentacles- duality in a financial situation. As a situation card it would suggest a choice between working at 2 jobs, or between 2 jobs. Veronica is currently working for a company but is creatively stifled. In the image you can see the sheep grazing in the background, with a bird of prey looming close by in the sky.

card 2. 8 Pentacles- learning of new skills. As the challenge or opportunity card I see this definitely as a positive influence in relation to the original question of returning to a previous work environment. The cards gives me a feeling of creative expansion through honing skills. It shows what is possible to achieve once you learn how to use the tools of the trade. The nearly finished sculpture in the background is proof of that.

card 3. - 7 Cups- emotional confusion. As the basis or foundation of this reading the 7 of cups suggests Veronica is letting her imagination get the better of her. She is dreaming of all the possibilities before her, however her emotions are scattered into various directions. Actually she is overwhelmed by the questions in her mind. The two females in the image are hoping or are in an apprehensive state - this can symbolize the process Veronica is going through.

card 4. - Knight of Pentacles. What has just happened and is still in the activation state. There is a work or money related opportunity at the beginning stages. The ox in the image symbolizes a slow but persistent energy. Things are moving but not quickly. The knight on the horse is staring at the pentacle in his right hand and is dressed in full armor ready for a financial fight. He is in a "pause" stage while reviewing his plans. He is not about to rush into anything.................

card 5. - King of Pentacles. What is likely to manifest. This card can represent an actual male who is in a strong financial standing in society. This card sometimes represent career & work. In the image we see the back view of the King's throne. He is overlooking the worker in the field. There are symbols of abundance (wines, grapes) in the foreground. The bird in the foreground is a stork indicating changes are happening behind the scenes. The fact that this King has appeared in the reading tells me that financial/career achievements can SUCCEED.

card 6. - 8 of Wands. The immediate future. The answer is heading towards Veronica, and really soon too. This spot generally is within a time frame of less than 6-8 weeks, most likely a few weeks. This is a card of speed and a rapid conclusion to the question Veronica is asking. The angel in the background is holding a spear. I get the feeling that the information is of a piercing or urgent nature that she will receive.

THE STAFF.

card 7. - 3 of Wands. This is usually the "you" spot. In this case it will reveal Veronica's outlook or attitude surrounding her question. In the image the male is facing you with his right hand holding onto one of the wands in the ground. In the background is a scene of a wagon trail. "Help is coming". This cards gives the feeling of patient waiting while holding on to a goal or objective.

card 8. -7 of Wands REVERSED. The spot of what others think or will do. The external influences related to the question. Reversed energy in this spot would typically suggest a delay or problem. This card is generally positive in it's upright position. Everyone reads reversals differently. The core meaning is still there and it is the energy that needs to be released constructively if that meaning is positive. If the reversed card is negative in nature to begin with, then the reversal might be a relief.

Darn it all, there will be a confronting situation developing either by the employer or the messenger of the information depicted in the 8 of Wands. This is the only card that does not fit in with the flow of the reading - is it the LITTLE FOXES shown in the previous Pages of Shustah © reading?OR (what do you think?)

Take a look at the 8 of Wands & the 7 of Wands Reversed in the image, they are side by side. I deliberately included the 8 of Wands with the Staff cards. The arrow that the angel is aiming is headed right for the male standing on the mound. He had a slight advantage. It seems to me the Angel's arrow will throw him off that mound into the reversal position & in that process he will lose the only weapon he had in his hands. What this insight could mean is that the opportunity has no other competition, meaning no one else would apply for it. There is no need to fight for it.Has the threat of the 6 other wands been removed? Veronica should not let anyone take advantage of her. I want to read the reversal of the 7 of Wands to indicate that Veronica's position is strong and she will have to act quick.

card 9. - 5 of Cups. Many authors say that this position is also an influence closely connected the final card. Some read this card as Hopes & Fears. It really depends on how you feel like reading it. If you have a more uniformed technique when you read cards then stick to it. Without any doubt in my mind, I read card 9 as the outcome of the influence of card 8 - 7 of Wands reversed.

Initially I feel that things will not work out as originally planned but the river does flow in a continuous manner. How is that connected to the obvious traditional meaning of regret or missed opportunity within this card? I choose not to read the overturned cups because I am drawn to the 2 individuals that are walking away towards the river which is in the background of the image.

As a fear card- Veronica is afraid things will not work out and she will regret her decision.

As a hope card- Veronica is hoping that she will not have any regrets leaving her current "secure" job.

card 10. - The Knight of Wands. As the answer or outcome, here we have a feeling of speed again. Change is imminent. Whatever the outcome of this situation around Veronica is - it will be resolved abruptly. Will she return to her previous work environment? The final card strongly suggests a shift in the wind. News is coming that will require some fast thinking. I did not find a yes or a now answer within the Knight of Wands.

A few combinations

7 of Wands Reversed + SUN = the advantage or opportunity is larger than you can imagine

8 of Wands + SUN = very very good news

5 of Cups + SUN = despite any regrets or disappointments the rays of the Sun will bring you happiness

7 of Cups + SUN = the right choice is made

2 of Pentacles + SUN = an increase in finances

8 of Pentacles + SUN = being happy with what is studied or learned

The crisis of sustainability
Imagine you are a member of the crew of a large space ship on a voyage to visit a distant planet. Your journey there and back will take many years. How can the crew survive that long? An adequate, high quality, source of energy is readily available in the radiation from the sun. Otherwise, resources for the journey are limited. Much of the time of the spacecraft crew is taken up with managing the resources as carefully as possible. A local biosphere is created in the spacecraft where plants are grown for food and everything is recycled. Careful accounts are kept of all resources, with especial emphasis on non-replaceable components. Waste products must not be allowed to degrade the environment on board the spaceship. That the resources be sustainable at least for the duration of the voyage, both there and back, is clearly essential. Planet Earth is enormously larger than the spaceship we have just been describing. The crew of Spaceship Earth at six billion and rising is also enormously larger. The principle of Sustainability should be applied to Spaceship Earth as rigorously as it has to be applied to the much smaller vehicle on its interplanetary journey. Professor Kenneth Boulding a distinguished American economist was the first to employ the image of Spaceship Earth. In a publication in 1966 he contrasted an ‘open’ or ‘cowboy’ economy (as he called an unconstrained economy) with a ‘spaceship’ economy in which sustainability is paramount. [1]

There have been many definitions of Sustainability. The simplest I know is ‘not cheating on our children’; to that may be added, ‘not cheating on our neighbors’ and ‘not cheating on the rest of creation’. In other words, not passing on to our children or any future generation, an Earth that is degraded compared to the one we inherited, and also sharing common resources as necessary with our neighbors in the rest of the world and caring properly for the non-human creation. As we enter the 21st century, many things are happening in our modern world that are just not sustainable.[2] In fact, we are all guilty of cheating in the three respects I have mentioned. Perhaps the biggest and most challenging problem we face is that of the climate change that is being caused by human activities particularly the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas). About 7 billion tons of carbon (as carbon dioxide) per year currently enter the atmosphere from fossil fuel sources, a figure that continues to increase rapidly, with the result that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is now at a higher level than for at least half a million years.

Human-induced Climate Change
‘Greenhouse gases’ such as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere absorb infra-red or ‘heat’ radiation from the earth’s surface and act as blankets over the earth’s surface, keeping it warmer than it would otherwise be. The basic science underlying this natural ‘greenhouse effect’ has been known for nearly two hundred years; it is essential to the provision of our current climate to which ecosystems and we humans have adapted. However, because of the human-induced increase in greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, the temperature at the earth’s surface is rising. The best estimates by the world’s climate scientists is that, over the 21st century the global average temperature will rise by between 2 and 6 ºC (3.5 to 11 ºF) from its pre-industrial level.[3] For global average temperature, a rise of this amount is large. Its difference, between the middle of an ice age and the warm periods in between, is only about 5 or 6 ºC (9 to 11 ºF). So, associated with likely warming in the 21st century will be a rate of change of climate equivalent to say, half an ice age in less than 100 years – a larger rate of change than for at least 10,000 years. Adapting to this will be difficult for both humans and many ecosystems.

Talking in terms of changes of global average temperature, however, tells us rather little about the impacts of global warming on human communities. Some of the most obvious impacts will be due to the rise in sea level that occurs because ocean water expands as it is heated. The projected rise is of the order of half a meter (20 inches) a century and will continue for many centuries – to warm the deep oceans as well as the surface waters takes a long time. This will cause large problems for human communities living in low lying regions. Many areas, for instance in Bangladesh (where about 10 million live within the one meter contour), southern China, islands in the Indian and Pacific oceans and similar places elsewhere in the world will be impossible to protect and many millions will be displaced. There will also be impacts from extreme events. The extremely unusual high temperatures in central Europe during the summer of 2003 led to the deaths of over 20,000 people. Careful analysis leads to the projection that such summers are likely to be average by the middle of the 21st century and cool by the year 2100. Water is becoming an increasingly important resource. A warmer world will lead to more evaporation of water from the surface, more water vapor in the atmosphere and more precipitation on average. Of greater importance is the fact that the increased condensation of water vapor in cloud formation leads to increased latent heat of condensation being released. Since this latent heat release is the largest source of energy driving the atmosphere’s circulation, the hydrological cycle will become more intense. This means a tendency to more intense rainfall events and also less rainfall in some semi-arid areas. Since, on average, floods and droughts are the most damaging of the world’s disasters, their greater frequency and intensity is bad news for most human communities and especially for those regions such as south east Asia and sub-Saharan Africa where such events already occur only too frequently. It is these sorts of events that provide some credence to the comparison of climate with weapons of mass destruction.

Sea level rise, changes in water availability and extreme events will lead to increasing pressure from environmental refugees. A careful estimate[4] has suggested that, due to climate change, there could be more than 150 million extra refugees by 2050. In addition to the main impacts summarized above are changes about which there is less certainty, but if they occurred would be highly damaging and possibly irreversible. For instance, large changes are being observed in polar regions and that the Greenland ice cap might begin to melt down is becoming a more likely possibility. Complete melt down may take up to 1000 years or more but would eventually add 7 meters (23 feet) to the sea level.

So far I have addressed adverse impacts. But there will also be some positive impacts. For instance, in Siberia and other areas at high northern latitudes, winters will be less cold and growing seasons longer. Also, increased concentrations of carbon dioxide have a fertilizing effect on some plants and crops which, providing there are adequate supplies of water and nutrients, will lead to increased crop yields in some places. However, careful studies demonstrate that adverse impacts will far outweigh positive ones, the more so as temperatures rise more than 1 or 2 ºC (2 to 3.5 ºF) above pre-industrial values.

How sure are we about the scientific story I have just presented? There remain large uncertainties in the detail but the main fact that global warming due to human action is occurring and is likely to cause serious adverse impacts especially in the world’s poorer countries is firmly based in science that is well understood. The world scientific community has carried out thorough assessments of the science of human induced climate change through the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - formed jointly by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Program in 1988. I had the privilege of being chairman or co-chairman of the Panel’s scientific assessment from 1988 to 2002.

In its reports[5] the IPCC has honestly and objectively distinguished what is reasonably well known and understood from those areas with large uncertainty. No assessments on any other scientific topic have been so thoroughly researched and reviewed. The Academies of Science of the world’s eleven most important countries (the G8 plus India, China and Brazil) have recently issued a statement endorsing the IPCC’s conclusions[6]. The brief account I have presented here is based on the IPCC’s reports.

Unfortunately, there are strong vested interests that have spent tens of millions of dollars on spreading misinformation about the climate change issue. Some of those involved have had the amazing audacity to present the careful, authoritative, honest work of the world climate science community through the IPCC as ‘junk science’, when, in fact, it is their dishonest presentations that could be described that way. First they tried to deny the existence of any scientific evidence for rapid climate change due to human activities. More recently they have largely accepted the fact of anthropogenic climate change but argue that its impacts will not be great, that we can ‘wait and see’ and in any case we can always ‘fix’ the problem if it turns out to be substantial. The scientific evidence cannot support such arguments.

International action regarding climate change began in 1992 with the establishment at the Earth Summit at Rio de Janeiro in 1992 of the Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC) - agreed by over 160 countries. It was signed by President George Bush and ratified unanimously by the US Senate. The Objective of the FCCC in its Article 2 is “to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that does not cause dangerous interference with the climate system” and that is consistent with sustainable development. Such stabilization would require that emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere must not only stop growing but be reduced to a small fraction of their present levels well before the end of the century.
The reductions in emissions must be made globally; all nations must take part. However, there are very large differences between carbon dioxide emissions from different countries. Expressed in tons of carbon per capita per annum, they vary from about 5.5 for the USA, 2.2 for Europe, 0.7 for China and 0.2 for India. The global average per capita, currently about 1 ton per annum, must fall substantially not only to enable stabilization of carbon dioxide concentration but also to allow for the expected increase in human population during the 21st century. Ways need to be found to achieve the large reductions required that are both realistic and equitable. The Kyoto Protocol set up by the FCCC represents a beginning for the process of greenhouse gases reduction, averaging about 5% below 1990 levels by 2012 by those developed countries who have ratified the protocol[7]. It is an important start that demonstrates the achievement of a useful measure of international agreement on such a complex issue. It also introduces for the first time international trading of greenhouse gas emissions so that reductions can be achieved in the most cost effective ways. After the Kyoto reductions by 2012, it is essential that all countries join in the agreements. The UK government, for instance, has taken a lead on this issue and has agreed a target for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of 60% by 2050 - predicated on a stabilization target of doubled carbon dioxide concentrations together with a recognition that developed countries will need to make greater reductions to allow some headroom for developing countries. Economists in the UK government Treasury Department have estimated the cost to the UK economy of achieving this target. On the assumption of an average growth in the UK economy of 2.25 % p.a., they estimated a cost of no more than the equivalent of 6 months’ growth over the 50 year period[8]. Similar costs for achieving stabilization have been estimated by the IPCC.

Three sorts of actions are required if such reductions are to be achieved.[9] First, there is energy efficiency. Approximately one third of energy is employed in buildings (domestic and commercial), one third in transport and one third by industry. Large savings can be made in all three sectors, many with significant savings in cost – as many industrial companies are beginning to find. Secondly, a wide variety of non-fossil fuel sources of energy are available for development and exploitation, for instance, biomass (including waste), solar power (both photovoltaic and thermal), hydro, wind, wave, tidal and geothermal energy. These need to be developed as rapidly as possible so as to provide for energy needs in the long-term, Thirdly, there are possibilities for sequestering carbon that would otherwise enter the atmosphere either through the planting of forests or by pumping underground (for instance in spent oil and gas wells). The opportunities for industry for innovation, development and investment in all these areas is large.

Some argue that we can ‘wait and see’ before action is necessary. That is not a responsible position. The need for action is urgent for three reasons. The first reason is scientific. Because the oceans take time to warm, there is a lag in the response of climate to increasing greenhouse gases. Because of greenhouse gas emissions to date, a commitment to substantial change already exists, much of which will not be realized for 30 to 50 years.[10] Further emissions just add to that commitment. The second reason is economic. Energy infrastructure, for instance in power stations also lasts typically for 30 to 50 years. It is much more cost effective to begin now to phase in the required infrastructure changes rather than having to make them much more rapidly later. The third reason is political. Countries like China and India are industrializing rapidly. I heard a senior energy adviser to the Chinese government speak recently. He said that China by itself would not be making big moves to non-fossil fuel sources. When the developed nations of the west take action, they will take action - they will follow not lead. China is building new electricity generating capacity of about 1 GW power station per week. If we want to provide effective leadership we need to start now.

Creation Care - a Christian challenge
People often say to me that I am wasting my time talking about environmental sustainability. ‘The world’ they say ‘will never agree to take the necessary action’. I reply that I am optimistic for three reasons. First, I have experienced the commitment of the world scientific community (including scientists from many different nations, backgrounds and cultures) in painstakingly and honestly working together to understand the problems and assessing what needs to be done. Secondly, I believe the necessary technology is available for achieving satisfactory solutions. My third reason is that I believe we have a God-given task of being good stewards of creation.

Let me explain what Christian stewardship of creation means. In the early part of Genesis, we learn that humans, made in God’s image, are given the mandate to exercise stewardship/management care over the earth and its creatures (Gen 1 v26,28 & 2 v15). To expand on what this means, I quote from a document ‘A Biblical vision for creation care’ developed following a meeting of Christian leaders at Sandy Cove, Maryland, USA held in June 2004.[11]

According to Scripture only human beings were made in the divine image (Gen. 1:26-27). This has sometimes been taken to mean that we are superior and are thus free to lord it over all other creatures. What it should be taken to mean is that we resemble God in some unique ways, such as our rational, moral, relational, and creative capacity. It also points to our unique ability to image God’s loving care for the world and to relate intimately to God. And it certainly points to our unique planetary responsibility. The same pattern holds true in all positions of high status or relationships of power, whether in family life, education, the church, or the state. Unique capacity and unique power and unique access create unique responsibility. Being made in God’s image is primarily a mandate to serve the rest of creation (Mk 10:42-45).

Only in recent decades have human beings developed the technological capacity to assess the ecological health of creation as a whole. Because we can understand the global environmental situation more thoroughly than ever before, we are in a sense better positioned to fulfill the stewardship mandate of Genesis 1 and 2 than ever before. Tragically, however, this capacity arrives several centuries after we developed the power to do great damage to the creation. We are making progress in healing some aspects of the degraded creation, but are dealing with decades of damage, and the prospect of long-lasting effects even under best-case scenarios. We cannot hide behind an earth that will not last or has no future. Jesus has promised to return to earth – earth redeemed and transformed.[12] In the meantime earth awaits, subject to frustration, that final redemption (Rom 8 v 20-22, Col 1 vv 15-20). Our task is to obey the clear injunction of Jesus to be responsible and just stewards until his return (Luke 12 v 41-48). Exercising this role of stewards provides an important part of our fulfillment as humans. In our modern world we concentrate so much on economic goals – getting rich and powerful. Stewardship or long-term care for our planet and its resources brings to the fore moral and spiritual goals. Reaching out for such goals could lead to nations and peoples working together more effectively and closely than is possible with many of the other goals on offer.

New Attitudes
Taking our Christian stewardship seriously demands new attitudes and approaches at all levels of society, international, national and individual. An example of such an attitude is that of ‘sharing’. At the individual level, a lot of sharing often occurs; at the international level it occurs much less. Perhaps the most condemning of world statistics is that the rich are getting richer while the poor get poorer – the flow of wealth in the world is from the poor to the rich. Although the amount of aid to the developing world has increased substantially in recent years, if aid and trade are added together, it remains the case that the overwhelming balance of benefit is to rich nations rather than poor ones. Nations need to learn to share on a much larger scale. We often talk of the ‘global commons’ meaning for example air, oceans or Antarctica – by definition these are ‘commons’ to be shared. But more ‘commons’ need to be identified. For instance, there are respects in which Land should be treated as a resource to be shared or fish and other marine resources. Or, in order for international action regarding climate change to be pursued, how are allowable emissions from fossil fuel burning or from deforestation to be allocated? How do we as a world share these natural resources between us and especially between the very rich – like ourselves - and the very poor?

The FCCC has soon to start negotiations including all countries regarding allocations of carbon dioxide emissions. One proposal is that the starting point is current emissions, so that it is reduction levels from the present that are negotiated. That is called ‘grandfathering’. Another proposal by the Global Commons Institute called ‘Contraction and Convergence’[13] is that from some future date – for instance, 2030 or 2050 - emissions should be allocated equally per capita with transfer of allocations allowed through trading. The logic and the basic equity of the second of these is in principle quite compelling – but is it achievable? Sustainability will never be achieved without a great deal more sharing. Sharing is an important Christian principle. John the Baptist preached about sharing (Luke 3 v11), Jesus talked about sharing (Luke 12 v33), the early church were prepared to share everything (Acts 4 v32) and Paul advocated it (2 Cor 8 v13-15). The opposite of sharing - greed and covetousness - is condemned throughout scripture and is explicitly forbidden by the last of the Ten Commandments.
To achieve sharing in practical terms requires a means of accounting for each person’s or nation’s share. This, in turn, implies goals or targets at which to aim. All commercial companies engage in carefully thought out, realistic, target setting so as to assist in ensuring business success. Targets are needed at all levels of society - international, national, local and personal. Many examples exist of international targets that have been agreed. Within the UN FCCC, targets have been set within the Kyoto Protocol. Discussions are beginning about internationally agreed targets for later dates that must involve all major countries. In the meantime, some countries or states (e.g. the UK and California)[14] have set real or aspirational targets of their own.

At the World Summit on Sustainable Development at Johannesburg in 2002, some new targets were established for example, to halve the proportion of people without access to clean water and basic sanitation by 2015; to use and produce chemicals by 2020 in ways that do not lead to significant adverse effects on human health and the environment; to maintain or restore depleted fish stocks to levels that can produce the maximum sustainable yield on an urgent basis and where possible by 2015; to achieve by 2010 a significant reduction in the current rate of loss of biological diversity. Many felt these targets were too vague or too weak. But at least they have provided something rather than nothing to aim at.
One aspect of sharing, the importance of which is increasingly recognized by agencies concerned with aid and by others, is not just to share our food or other goods with the third world but to share our skills, for instance in science and technology. I give you one example from my experience as a Trustee of the Shell Foundation,[15] a large charity set up by the Shell company particularly to support the provision of sustainable energy in poor countries. In general, this is not being done through grants for individual projects. It is often said that it is better to provide a hungry man with a fishing rod than with a fish. It is even better to find someone who will set up a fishing rod factory! So the Foundation’s programs are increasingly concerned with the creation of local enterprises and the loan financing to enable them to get started. Examples of such enterprises are some that build and market simple efficient stoves using traditional fuels that will substantially reduce the amount of fuel that is used and also reduce indoor air pollution with the serious damage to health that it causes, and others that provide sustainable and affordable energy to poor communities often from the use of readily available waste material (e.g. rice straw in China, coconut shells in the Philippines etc). The potential for the multiplication of such projects is large. An aim of the Foundation is to catalyze other bodies and agencies in the creation of mechanisms for the large scale-up of such programs so that they can become significant on a global scale both in the provision of energy to poor communities and also in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

These new attitudes are not just to provide guidance to policy makers in government or elsewhere. They need to be espoused by the public at large. Otherwise government will not possess the confidence to act. For the public to take them on board, the public have to understand them. To understand, they have to be informed. Christian churches could play a key role in the propagation of new attitudes based on accurate and understandable information. Christian communities in the world should rise to the challenge, take the high ground and demonstrate Christian stewardship in effective action. A particular imperative is to express our care for God’s creation, our love for God and our neighbor (wherever he may be) by leading the way in more equitable sharing of the world’s resources.
We, in the developed countries have already benefited over many generations from abundant fossil fuel energy. The demands on our stewardship take on a special poignancy as we realize that the adverse impacts of climate change will fall disproportionately on poorer nations and will tend to exacerbate the increasingly large divide between rich and poor.

When I speak on this subject, my wife always reminds me to indicate the actions that individuals can take. There are some things that all of us can do. For instance, when purchasing vehicles or appliances we can choose ones that are fuel efficient; we can ensure our homes are as energy efficient as possible; we can purchase our electricity from a ‘green’ supplier guaranteeing that it is from renewable sources; we can use public transportation, car-share more frequently or travel less. Also we can support leaders in government or industry who are advocating or organizing the necessary solutions. To quote from Edmund Burke, a British parliamentarian of 200 years ago, ‘No one made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do so little.’

In conclusion, I much like the symbol of the Celtic Cross, the cross of Jesus surrounded by a circle denoting the world, illustrating that the redemption Jesus accomplished includes not only humans but the whole of creation.[16] And we humans have the responsibility of being stewards of God’s creation until Jesus returns. In a parable about stewardship in Luke 12, Jesus instructs his disciples ending with the clear message, ‘Unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required.’[17] The challenge to all of us is unmistakable and daunting. But we also have the assurance that we do not have to act on our own. As God walked with Adam and Eve in the garden in the Genesis story, so he will come alongside us to help us as we seek to do his work here on earth.

TAROT DAME'S insights of the December 2/07 Celtic Cross using the Aquarian deck. Thanks Tarot Dame.

The Strength crossed by the 3 of Swords: (I have often seen the 3 of Swords come up in readings regarding surgery.) I read this coupling as indicating that his tough-guy exterior is being tested/put in check by the surgery, and may be a blessing in disguise, meant to soften him up. The “strength” of the swords being thrust into the heart: The swords (his exterior strength) disappear and become invisible for a time inside the heart (during the surgery and hospital stay he will be uncharacteristically vulnerable). Then they eventually come through on the other side. A thought that struck me from the way the 3 of Swords was laid out also: The sharp/extreme points of the swords (and corresponding aspects of his personality) are facing the left (the Past). The handles of the swords face right (future) which indicate that the strength/base is still there, along with some of the sword, but without the most extreme points. The way I would read this is that the surgery has the potential to ultimately soften his personality. A big wake up call.

King of Swords as Basis of Question: I read the King of Swords as representing Joe. For some reason, this coupled with the two cards above, I had the feeling this was close to his personality before reading your description of him. Obviously, I can see where it would represent the surgeon as well.

4 of Pents as Passing Influence: I believe wholeheartedly that your emotional state causes either health or dis-ease in your body. So if he was under pressure financially, and I don’t mean lacking money, but rather facing stress/deadlines in regards to his career life, then I think that would have had a tremendous effect on his heart condition. It being a “passing” influence indicates that it needn’t be a permanent negative influence in his life…it’s something that is under his control, so in the future his stress can be managed, and it doesn’t need to affect his health again…IF he is able to realize this mind-body connection.

King of of Cups as Probable Future: Yes, I also saw this card as a softening of his personality, as I also saw the first two cards.

7 of Wands as Immediate Future: Just by looking at the card image, I got the message that “It’s entirely in his hands”. His healing will largely depend on his own mind and belief in his ability to heal.5 of Swords as Joe’s Attitude: I saw this as his expectations of recovery. This card indicates to me that yes, he expects to survive and get better. He doesn’t expect to die. However, he doesn’t optimistically envision a 100% complete recovery. I think he fears that his recovery will come at a cost of some sort…some part of himself may not ever get back to “normal”. Whether this is mental, emotional or physical, I don’t know.

Temperance as External Influences: I don’t think this card implies that there is already a great balance of his environment, or else he wouldn’t be in the situation he’s in. I think he needs to become more aware of what surrounds him in his daily life, and apply moderation where needed. There are probably aspects of his life that are out of balance that he never noticed or gave thought to before. What got my attention in this card was the stark white face/wings compared to the darker colors. The “spiritual” side stood out to me more. Perhaps he needs more balance in that area of his life. And I don’t mean going to church every Sunday, zoning out, waiting for the service to be over. I mean a more personal aspect to it.

This, for a King of Swords type, may be a challenge, if he’s not already truly in tune (or comfortable) with his spiritual side.

Knight of Rods as Immediate Influence: Hopes and Fears: I saw this in a different light than you mentioned (though of course you were right, as the change of residence came to fruition.) I saw this card as representing his looking back at his youth and vigor. He’s basically being forced into a situation that has the polar opposite energy from the Knight of Rods. When stuck in such a place, people tend to think of what used to be, and what could be. The Knight of Rods is energetic, vibrant, young, healthy and active. I got the feeling that while he’s laying helpless in the hospital bed, the man in him is yearning for some aspects of this card back in his life.

The Knight of Swords as Potential Future Outcome: Okay, what came to me right away when seeing this card wasn’t the traditional meaning of the card at all. The thing that sprung to mind was a demotion from his being the King of Swords to the Knight of Swords. I don’t know how far in the future you take the final outcome card to reflect. But in this situation, I saw this as his going from Top Dog (King of the World) to Someone With Something To Prove (Knight Battling to Recover). I saw this as being the next few months…and not years down the line.

A wonderful interpretation by Tarot Dame revealing her perception on this very important Tarot reading.

What is the history of the Celtic cross?

The Celtic cross is essentially a traditional Christian cross with a circle overlying the point where the lines meet. This symbol evolved in the British Isles, and the earliest forms date from the seventh to ninth centuries in Ireland, Wales, and Scotland.

The oldest Celtic crosses were carved into large slabs of rock that lay flat on the ground. Later versions stand in an upright position, with rock carved away from the cross. Tenth-century Irish crosses were sometimes capped with a pitched roof. Celtic crosses were often decorated with interlaced knot work, spirals, key patterns, animal figures, foliage designs, and Biblical stories. Some crosses were memorials, inscribed with names of individuals; modern Celtic crosses are often used as tombstones in Irish churchyards.

Some suggest that the Celtic cross is derived from the Chi Rho symbol popularized by the Christian Roman emperor Constantine. "Chi" and rho" are the first two letters of "Christ" in Greek, and the overlapped letters are similar to the equal-limbed cross at the center of the Celtic cross.

An Irish legend tells how St. Patrick created the first Celtic cross by drawing a circle over a Latin cross to incorporate a pagan moon goddess symbol. For an Irish Catholic, the circle in the Celtic cross may be a symbol of eternity and the endlessness of God's love. It can even represent a halo emanating from Christ.

I bought The Windows of Tarot written by F.D. Graves in 1973 at a time when few books were written about the cards. The Aquarian Tarot deck illustrations used in the book were created by David Palladini in 1970. As you can see my original box shows much wear & tear. This was the second deck of Tarot I bought after the famous Rider deck. The cards are in mint condition considering that they are nearly 38 years old.

If you get a chance to get a copy of this book it is well worth it. F.D. Graves describes in full the symbolic interpretation within the images of the Aquarian Tarot. In my opinion this book was a pioneer in the "new" way of reading the Tarot. David Palladini was one of the first artists to add his own unique blend of symbols in the traditional Tarot.

1973 The Windows of Tarot by F. D. Graves (Dobbs Ferry NY: Morgan & Morgan). (Illustrated with the Aquarian Tarot.) Light-weight.

1970 Aquarian Tarot published by Morgan Press, Dobbs Ferry, NY. Illustrated by David Mario Palladini. “An authentic interpretation of the medieval Tarot.” Palladini, when he was still a student, was one of the artists of the Linweave Tarot (1967).

I will be using the Aquarian Tarot to demonstrate the Celtic cross reading today.

QUESTION- what is the prognosis of "Joe" the family member who had open heart surgery Nov 29th?

(image2) Cards #1 & #2. STRENGTH, 3 OF SWORDS.

STRENGTH is a powerful card to have in position #1. Leo is associated with this card and Leo rules the heart. How appropriate. What does it mean to have "strength"? The Aquarian card is very different from the usual connections to the lady with the lion as depicted by many other Tarot systems. Here we see a man ready for action. He is fully clothed in anticipation of a fight (symbolism of the sword in his right hand). We see the taming of the beast within (symbolized by the dog on the right side of the card). He holds the dog and has control of it. You almost get the feeling that if he lets go of the dog it will attack or at his command.

"Joe" the man who had the surgery a few days ago went into the operating room, ready for the fight- the fight for his life. This card suggests that Joe has reserve energy and power both in his body & mind. At this time balance is important for him - to keep his energy within control.

3 OF SWORDS as the crossing card. Is this card an opportunity or a challenge? When you look at the two cards in image2 you can see the struggle of emotions. This is a card of pain, mostly intellectual but it feels like emotional. When our ego gets pricked it hurts. I have written about the 3 of Swords in another post. It is almost eerie how the Aquarian Tarot is illustrating piercings in the heart when the actual situation involves the heart being operated on.

Does the 3 of Swords point to more problems ....?....involving the power/strength/energy of the STRENGTH card in position #1. Will the recovery process run into delays. Was the surgery a betrayal in that it will not help?

[UPDATE: JOE suffered a serious stroke Dec 6/07. There is a 17% chance of stroke in all open heart surgeries]

Card 3 - King of Swords. BASIS OF QUESTION.

This King is known as the man in uniform and in this reading represents the surgeon. He is in command in his field of expertise- medicine. There are 2 Kings in the Celtic spread indicating a meeting between men.... other doctors. Also, in the past the personality of Joe was one of self sufficiency and he was a man to be reckoned with. He was not easily swayed and was firm in his opinions.

Card 4 - 4 of Pentacles. PASSING INFLUENCE .

When you look at this card you can see 1 large pentacle covering the chest area which contains the heart. This card is known for it's security/money connections. Joe had been preoccupied in a project that put additional stress on him both physically and materially. He is a builder of homes.

Card 5 - King of Cups. PROBABLE FUTURE.

This King promises a softening of the King of Swords if it is used to represent Joe's personality. His role as a father will come under serious focus. The King of Cups is traditionally the father card or issues around fatherhood. In some cases this King can be a counsellor or lawyer who has the person's best interests at heart.

[UPDATE: Dec. 7th- Joe's role as a father has been severely challenged in that his prognosis is not promising due to the stroke]

Card 6 - 7 of Wands. IMMEDIATE FUTURE

The card of advantage falls in the imminent future spot, usually within 1 month. Of Palladini's image, F.D. Graves explains that the man is protecting the other 6 budding wands/rods with the one he is holding with both hands. This picture sheds a different angle on the typical scene where the man is opposed by the staffs. This card can be a challenge but shows the person holding on to their position. For Joe, it means he will take responsibility for his recovery-

Card 7 - 5 of Swords. JOE'S ATTITUDE.

In the spot of the attitude, one can see that a battle has been fought. The image illustrates a man with two swords against his shoulder while holding on to the one that appears to be in the ground. Joe has taken the information(swords) from what has occurred and is shouldering it. Also he is pondering on some other news(sword in ground). Two swords lay to the side of the man in the image. These 2 swords represent past thoughts and the figures in the background are aspects of Joe, the parts of him that were battling after receiving the news of the heart attack & pending open heart surgery and.... whether to agree to surgery or not.

Card 8 - TEMPERANCE. EXTERNAL INFLUENCES.

A great card to have in position 8. The card of moderation. Tempering positive and negative influences. The image in the card is in perfect balance. There is a strong suggestion that Joe will slow down and make the appropriate modifications to promote further healing. Position 8 rules the environment and other people as well. It seems as though he will get co-operation during his time of adjustments.

Cards 9 & 10. Knight of Rods (Wands) & Knight of Swords.

Two knights - a deal or some negotiations in planning....a legal situation. Both Knights face into the center of the layout. They look straight at the King of Cups. These men are communicating. Knights represent the need for action. There will be a legal situation that might arise. Legal things do not have to be bad, they can be helpful- like finding out your right to medicine, compensation for time off work, etc.

[UPDATE: Dec 7th- the doctors and nurses in conference after the stroke]

Card 9 - IMMEDIATE INFLUENCE. HOPES & FEARS.

The Knight of Rods/Wands strongly suggests a change in environment. There is speed involved in this matter or a decision. Could Joe be fearing that he will lose his home or business? He will not be able to return to work in the same capacity for a very long time but the Knight suggests that he will make an attempt.

[UPDATE:- Dec 7th- the change of residence was the re-admitting to the hospital]

Card 10 - POTENTIAL FUTURE. OUTCOME.

The Knight of Swords as the result card strongly suggests that the prognosis involving Joe will certainly demand that he defend his well being. It shows that Joe is not about to give up without a good fight. The Knight(Joe) is inexperienced in this type of battle (heart operation & recovery) but will risk his life to follow his King's (surgeon)orders.

The only card that unsettles me is the 3 of Swords falling as the crossing #2 card. Is the operation a betrayal of hope?

[UPDATE: Dec 7th- the 3 of Swords left me with an uncomfortable feeling when I did this reading- yes the operation was a betrayal of hope because now Joe faces............ I really don't know yet and am very distraught at the news. PLEASE PRAY for Joe]

The Cosmic deck is illustrated in appreciation of it’s beautiful images and to demonstrate the study case of this Celtic cross reading.

7. MY ROLE in this reading. 5 of Clubs.

The image is playful. Great precision and focus is required when playing any sports just for fun so that you do not hurt anyone. Within this card I see a Chess Game between two people of similar strength. Known as a card of competition it suggest the use of assertive efforts to maintain one's position or to get the edge on someone. There are limits as suggested by the fence.

Yes I have limits in this situation too. It is not my place to go rushing off to the hospital to see this man. He is in the Intensive Cardiac Care unit and the rules are quite strict for visitors. The 5 of Wands tells me though I could playfully fight my way through the gates of the Iron Nurse standing guard.

There is a hint of anger in this card as well. The reason I say this is because the energy is channeled into a make belief fight -it uses the same type of energy as anger which propels you into action.

8. OTHERS. This spot represents the man in question. ACE of SWORDS.

Here we have a time card. The season of Autumn (Sept 21st). Libra.

This Ace is all about courage and strength of mind.

There are many positive qualities to the Ace of Swords. I think sometimes people forget that within every Tarot card is an equally opposite energy which is not always the Reversed meaning either. Worry is another meaning of this Ace and it connects well with the ACE. Aces are the seeds of the suit. The beginning of knowledge.... the beginning of pain...the beginning of struggles...etc

The Ace is about decisions. Many decisions require a hardened heart. It can mean a knife, scalpel or other sharp instrument used for cutting when other cards suggest hospitals and medical people involved.

I have always read these two cards to mean a tragedy of some kind- in my lengthy experience of this duo. The interesting point is that here we have the beginning (Ace) of the end (Death) contained within the 10 cards used in the Celtic Cross.

[UPDATE: Dec 7th- Joe suffered a serious stroke]

Is there a hint in this duo?

9. ADVICE or HOPES/FEARS. 8 of SWORDS.

The image in the card suggests the feeling of being fenced in by the situation. The restriction is usually self imposed through our own thoughts about how we see a circumstance. There are external influences which are depicted by the dark clouds in the background. Fear and the inability to move out of a situation are suggested. Sometimes all we can do is wait because we cannot control everything that seems to happen "to us".

The card shows the two characters standing in water which symbolizes our emotions. They are not facing each other which means that aspects of our own personalities are divided and not in balance. As an advice card it indicates that outer events will prevent any movement in the situation in a short period of time. Since the Ace represent the Autumn months...it could take up until the 1st week of Winter because the direction of this situation can be seen- right before Christmas.[UPDATE: Dec 10th- after studying the 8 of Swords tonight and what I wrote it clearly describes what happens when a blood clot hits the left side of the brain. The personality is divided & not in balance. ]

These two cards point to an aggressive outburst. A situation that looks dormant is actually in the state of eruption- breaking out.

[Dec 7th -UPDATE:- outburst- the stroke Dec 6th, please sending healing prayers to Joe]

These two cards suggest that there is nothing that can be done to avoid the transition or change that will be a result of the findings in this case study.

10. THE OUTCOME. The answer to the question. Queen of SWORDS.

I never like seeing this Queen as the outcome because it is NOT a positive outcome. Sure this Queen is very strong and a take charge kind of female but her meanings are also sadness, mourning and widowhood. Who is this Queen? Is it a person?

Does it represent the sword of separation? I see her as having strength even though she may have had her share of challenges in her life.Look at the symbol on her cape on the left side of the picture. It is the glyph for Gemini. This Queen is an air sign. She has learned to be her own best friend. She is in control of her emotions and leans towards being indifferent as a protective mechanism. Does this card answer our question? Some readers say that if a court card falls as the last card - it means that person depicted by the court card will have something to do with the outcome.

This Queen does represent a lawyer or doctor. Or an outcome that hurts.

[Dec 7th update:- 2 female doctors attended to Joe Dec 6th. "the outcome that hurts" is the new of the stroke over and above the open heart surgery which was to give him a chance for a new lifestyle]

2 Queens in a layout suggest rivals or females in competition. These two are not likely to be friends. Could it be a wife and ex wife? It's possible. When I find out I will post it.[UPDate:- Dec 10th- Today Joe has improved significantly, there are still concerns about the side effects of the stroke ........... Right now it is a miracle .... and the important thing is to look at each day as a bonus]

The question posed is "will the person who had the heart attack yesterday improve before Christmas"

You can see the complete Celtic cross using the wonderful Cosmic deck in the last post.

[Written permission granted from Laura E. Clarson, author of The Cosmic Tarot - Signposts Along the Path-A Spiritual Approach to the Tarot, to use some of her meanings in this case study.]

The Cosmic deck is illustrated in appreciation of it's beautiful images and to demonstrate the study case of the Celtic cross reading.

1. COVERING - 3 CUPS REVERSED

2. CROSSING-8 CUPS

1. 3 of cups Reversed- as the 1st card representing the situation around the question we find the negative influence of what is generally an excellent card of celebration. This card points to excesses such as drinking, smoking and unhealthy eating habits. This card's meaning ties in very nicely to the circumstances which may have lead to the heart attack- this is only speculation right now but makes sense. There is a hint that drugs can be an issue as well but I am not certain if the Tarot is picking up on something that will come to pass or could be a "now" problem. The description ties into the playing cards of 957(alcohol or drug overdose/problem).

2. 8 of Cups- as the crossing card, challenge or blessing which rules this reading we find a card of withdrawal. In this card is emotional indifference or an emotional distancing between 2 people. There is a loneliness depicted and this could describe how the person feels right now and will for the next several months. The road to recovery is a lonely one because you are on your own ... despite any moral and medical support you will get. No one can feel your pain but you. Others can relate to it but it still is not the same because they are not in your skin.

3. FOUNDATION- 10 of Cups.

This card suggests Love. The energy of the 10 of Cups is fulfillment on an emotional level. Because I did the cards the Tarot is showing me about my connection to the man in question. Some of my emotional conn
