We are opening the school year with our Connections class, a second language arts class focused on problem-solving and writing as a thinking tool.  What we are really having difficulty with is the fact that the students may struggle with the format of the class; getting an "A" will require strong habits of mind and a focus on proving that your answer has merit.  We've stripped out grading for grammar and spelling, we've focused our assessment on process thinking, cooperative group discussion, portfolio defense, and for lack of a better word, "out of the box" thinking.  Getting the students on board immediately is imperative for any class, but for this one, which they are already viewing as "2nd English," is crucial not only for the success of this year, but also for the success of the program.

There is a part in the video, which I hope you took the time to watch, where the narrator talks about how the 3rd screen privatized our lives and learning, but the 4th screen freed us to venture outside and do the things we love.  My gears were cranking.  I've admired the work Darren has done with the use of imagery in math, but what really struck me about him was his outsourcing of the legwork of the photography to his students.  Two of my favorite things right there: atypical assignments and student-created content.

What could we do with this information? Well, here was my hook: How many of your students have cellular phones?  How often do you text per day? Does your phone have a camera?  Video?  Does your phone have the ability to access the internet?  What do you use more often in the course of a normal day: cell phone or computer?  How could you use your cell phone to help you learn?

The idea would be to have the students compile data using a survey tool like surveymonkey, surveygizmo, or our in-house survey software.  Once the data is collected, a whole slew of possibilities open up:

• Compare our ownership stats to the nation, to the world (use this graph from nationmaster.com)
• Use the texting data to demonstrate how we communicate most and discuss reasoning behind this.  Compare this to a survey of the teaching staff.
• What does the data comparing the computer v. cell phone usage say?
• What ideas do students have for the use of cell phones in class?

The ability to have students create the data, analyze the data and then let it "incubate" as Ewan McIntosh stated, make this one a go for me.  Very beta right now and as I look at the questions there, they are in sore need of some higher level revision.  The power of what is in their pockets is, as I remarked to my colleagues in our notes, game-changing.  Again, as I sit here and write this, I can't help but think of the almost Draconian rules that exist in some parts of our buildings regarding the use of mobile devices.  This idea, aside from the student inclusion in the creation of the lesson, may serve to break down some barriers for us.  One can only hope....

If you tried to visit some of the Web's most popular sites for a good part of the day yesterday, July 20, 2008, you were likely disappointed. Sites like Wordpress (where this blog is hosted), Twitter, SmugMug and others, were impacted for hours yesterday because they depend on Amazon's S3 (Simple Storage Service), which went down. Apparently, even some Apple iPhone applications were impacted by the S3 outage. It was the second time in less than six months (the previous outage occured on February 15) that AWS (Amazon Web Services) has experienced a major failure.

Based on what we've learned so far about S3, our best guess is that yesterday's outage was caused by a software bug, a human error of some sort, or as was the case in their February outage, some set of conditions that occured within their system that overwhelmed their ability to handle traffic (interestingly, the latest problem occured early on a Sunday morning... not exactly a time when you would expect a peak load on their system). We view a malicious attack on the service a less likely cause, and hardware or connectivity problems a very unlikely cause. S3 is a decentralized system designed to survive the loss of some of it's components and still operate normally. In many widespread telecom or network failures suffered by providers and carriers in the past few years, the cause has often been determined to be software related or human error (like a construction crew cutting a fiber optic cable they didn't know was buried there).

The S3 outages bring to mind another concern among people responsible for the operation of the Internet itself. One of the services that the Internet is built on is DNS (the Domain Name System). The DNS system is what allows your computer to find a website such as this one, from among the millions of computers and websites on the Internet. There is concern among some that even though DNS functionality is spread across many servers on the Internet, in a hierarchical system, that a widespread DNS failure could occur. This would cripple almost all Internet traffic. Worst of all, if there was a major DNS failure, you might not be able to get to this blog ! Heaven forbid.

S3 is a "cloud" storage service. Internet-based computing resources are collectively referred to as cloud computing (see this Businessweek article on cloud computing). In cloud computing, resources that were traditionally located, say, in a company's data center (disk storage, application software, servers, etc.) are offered by service providers via the Internet. Cloud computing is a relatively new paradigm, and problems similar to what Amazon has experienced are sure to make CIOs and IT managers hesitant to rely on the cloud when they can provide computing resources locally and have greater control over them.

Almost by definition, services offered in the cloud must offer high availability. The uptime standard that is generally used in the telecommunications and computing industries for critical systems is "five nines", or 99.999% availability. That translates (approximately) to less than five minutes downtime a year, and generally does not include scheduled service outages. In the United States, the public telephone network operated by the Bell System was consistently able to achieve five nines reliability (so Ma Bell wasn't that bad to us after all, may she rest in peace). Clearly, Amazon's S3 service has failed this benchmark. It doesn't even appear that AWS has achieved two nines availability (less than about seven hours downtime per month) this month. That's utterly dismal performance that is unacceptable for critical systems, and it does not bode well for Amazon's future in the cloud, or for cloud computing in general.

Interestingly, Amazon's S3 SLA (Service Level Agreement) states that users are not entitled to a service credit unless their uptime drops below three nines (99.9%) in any month, and even if they fail to achieve two nines (99% uptime) in a month, they will only give users a 25% credit. They must not have a lot of confidence in their ability to provide four nines availability (less than one hour a year of downtime), which Amazon states is one of the design requirements that S3 was built to provide. And if they don't meet their service levels, will they give their customers a refund? No. It appears all they will offer is a credit to be applied to future service. Not good.

But don't expect disgruntled S3 customers who have been impacted by Amazon's Simple Storage System outages to issue press releases critical of Amazon. Paragraph 4.2.4 of their customer agreement specifically prohibits that unless you get their permission first. Incredible.

With an SLA like Amazon's, and especially because of their outages in the past few months, we might be inclined to use a service such as S3 only to store backup files. We don't feel that the service is reliable enough to be used to support a live website or other mission critical systems. And even if Amazon had a 100% uptime record, there's always this to worry about when deciding if you want to depend on services in the cloud (and to think that you were worried about the Y2K problem!).

Perhaps cloud computing is an idea whose time has not yet come.

I remember the very first time I saw a cellphone, it was sometime in 1998 or 1999. If I am not mistaken, it was the StarTac -

I was in college when it first came out, and boy were you "cool" when you had one like that. I remember that the network operator was Mobiline then. I can't remember though, if Smart and Globe were already existing during that time. All I know is that Mobiline is currently known as Piltel, the owner of the Talk and Text brand. I don't have an archival history of the evolution of cellular networks in the Philippines. If anybody has one, I would be very much delighted to hear about it.

It probably ushered in the era of the cellphone craze. During that time, it was the most ubiquitous model I could see in school. Nokia made a firm foothold here in the Philippines with that model and the rest is cellular history.

It's just disappointing that although Nokia remains very user friendly and retains its very intuitive user interface, it has failed on one other important product attribute - quality. I blogged once before about how its quality has suffered, and how it often hangs up on the user when you have gazillion messages and calendar notes saved inside a Nokia phone.

Ericsson then was just purely known as Ericsson. It had great looking models out there, but the interface, and more importantly - texting - were an exercise in patience. But one thing that struck most with me (at least during that time) was the ability of Ericsson to CANCEL the sending of an SMS, something that up to now, Nokia doesn't have (do correct me if I'm wrong). Now, it has one of the best models out there in the market.

My memories of the first mobile phone I ever held were not memorable. The phone was butt-ugly. It was a product of Alcatel. The memory is so faded I don't even want to know the model of that phone. It was darn heavy, had an attena that was so fragile you had to be careful when you pulled it out of its socket, was a two-liner, was very difficult to use, but we were forced to make do with it.

Apart from a horrendous looking phone, I was a caveman then, not knowing how to operate a SIM card. After inserting it into the Alcatel phone, the phone asked for my PIN. I didn't know what it was, so I kept on entering random numbers until the phone screamed PUK PUK PUK. Apparently I had exhausted all the security codes that after all was said and done I was the one screaming - PUK SH**, PUK SH**, PUK SH**.

We called the person who sold us the SIM and we were told to look into a sheet of black paper. At the back of my head I said to myself, "WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL US BEFOREHAND?????". A SIM card then cost about 300-500 I think. What a waste of money.

When we finally bought a Nokia 6150, my brother and I would fight about who'd be the one to use it first. Aah, the memories of yesterday. Now, we each have our own phones and each of us have two phones - one the major network, the other one has the 24/7 call and text unlimited option.

I wonder though, where is cellphone heaven (or hell)? Where do old models go? I doubt if they are just thrown into the waste bin. Maybe they go to Recto or Greenhills or maybe the provinces?

The last time I checked, there were already a billion cellphone users. People have a strong need to communicate. So strong that if you missed a person's call, you will lose your job. A poor guy (actually a police chief in Silay City, Negros Occidental) lost his job after he ignored his city's mayor.

Cellphones have also become tools of deception. If the Internet has terms like phishing, spamming, etc, even text messages have similar scams. For a while, there were lots of people posing as PCSO/Pagcor people texting unsuspecting victims that they won a jackpot prize, but that they had to deposit money first before they could secure a prize. How dumb is that?

I remember a maid of ours was one such victim, and she really believed in it so much that she wanted to deposit Php 4,000 at the nearest Western Union. I borrowed her phone and I talked to the impostor via text and call. I asked him a couple of questions, and the scammer shouted at me because he got pissed I didn't want to deposit. Haha.

Recently, thieves have gone the route of boiler room operations. Putting up fake offices, and then "hiring people". Four people were duped into giving up their cellphone in a supposed job interview. The plan is ingenious but obviously insidious. You just have to hand it to some people, they're just that crafty.

Mobile phones have certainly gone a long way, and if I am not mistaken, Sony Ericsson will be coming out with Mobile phones with PSP quality games. I'm eagerly awaiting them. I think there are already slew of gaming centric Sony Ericsson models (model code starts with "F") that are already out in the market.

Kids these days have all the fun. Hehe.
