This is my first Comic Con and decided to go to last night's opening preview night (doing the whole 4-day membership ordeal). I left work, picked up my friend, and drove straight to downtown SD. Outside the convention center was pretty crowded but I have to admit getting my badge and getting inside went pretty smoothly (at least for us). Well it also helps having my friend Nick since he's been to Comic Con before. There are also signs that point you to the right direction.

We went up the second floor and walk to another part of the building where they had a whole room full of employees who are there to get you registered. After that, they gave us a bag of free goodies and we went back to the first floor where all the booths are. There were a bunch of small booths but the big companies had the creative ones like the Sci Fi channel and CapCom booths.

So here are some helpful tips if you are attending the San Diego Comic Con at all this week:

1. bring lots of water and snacks but nothing too heavy because you will be doing a lot of walking. Oh and bring nice walking shoes.

2. If you're looking for the SDCC Exclusive toys, head towards the left side. I wasn't able to get any because they closed the line on us. Look for the section that has the Hasbro Toys sign. They will have Nemesis Prime, Mighty Mugg Iron Man (movie version), and Cobra Commander toy (speaking on podium). Hopefully they haven't ran out.

3. One of the big freebies that they give out are these ginormous tote bags to put your other freebie junk in. If you want one, make a left and head towards the WB sign.

4. Oh...you can actually play Street Fighter IV. The game is pretty sick!!! I never got to play it but I did watch from a distance and the graphics are awesome! They even give you a red headband that Ryu wears. Once again, make a left towards the Capcom section once you enter the convention center.

5. Artist Alley is towards the back left corner.

6. There is a Cafe Express all around the back wall where you can grab something to eat and rest.

7. You'll definitely meet some interesting characters when you're there.

I didn't get to watch the exclusive movie previews because I was too tired to stay up later. I will be going again this Saturday and hopefully take more pictures. Enjoy the pics!

So for a marketing strategy, Capcom is going to sell t-shirts with this horrible looking Mega Man design. This is in honor of Mega Man 9 being 8-bit. They wanted the cover art of this game to resemble the earlier designs of Mega Man 1 and 2.

So none of these pictures look like Mega Man and I think Capcom knows it now. This is why they are kinda poking fun at their 25 year old mistake by making really bad Mega Man t-shirts and cover art designs.

It’s the most anticipated event of the year. Gamers everywhere are being glued to their televisions watching G4, people are buying into every pre-E3 magazine, and gaming websites are in a frantic, non-stop coverage frenzy for the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). It’s the only time of the year when I become an out-closet nerd. To the point where I’m almost giddy. This year’s E3 is no slouch, at least from the Microsoft Booth. Having both a PC and an Xbox 360, I’ll be talking about what Microsoft is putting out for their two powerhouses. This fall, the bulk of my earnings will likely be on Microsoft points for XBLA (Xbox Live Arcade). I’ll rank the reasons why.

1. Mega Man 9. It’s been almost a decade since a true Mega Man game has come to the masses. Capcom has a nasty habit of not listening to fans of the blue bomber and putting out the same old crappy games every year with little to no change to each iteration (for example, The Battle Network Series). Capcom finally responds with what I think will be the greatest Mega Man ever made. Built from the ground up with new levels and bosses. This is no rehash here. It takes the old NES 8-bit approach to appeal to the hardcore classic fans. And since its coming to the Xbox 360, it’ll be in beautiful 8-bit HD. And I hear that just like the old NES games, the game will be very challenging.

2. Banjo-Kazooie. A remake of the classic platformer for the Nintendo 64. This game helped define Rare Inc. into what they are today. The graphics will be updated and in HD, plus achievements. This one is not to be missed. Banjo-Tooie’s release is inevitable.

3. Portal: Still Alive. Portal was a ground breaking game. Portal 2 won’t be out until mid 2009. Valve is still considering this game as a true sequel however. With more levels and a new challenge mode, this will likely be in the top sellers section after its highly anticipated debut.

4. Goldeneye 007. Another Nintendo 64 classic by Rare Inc. This game changed first person shooters forever. Originally released in 1999, this game is going to need a major graphical update. Today the visuals appear ugly. And online play is definitely a possibility. I can’t wait to see how this one turns out.

5. Galaga Legions. It’s Galaga. Classic top-down shooter revived, in HD. It’s beautiful, it’s insanely hard, and it rounds out my top 5.

I’m going to talk about a game that’s actually being done right. Everything about it excites me and makes me wish summer would end and fall would come sooner. To me, this game stuck out more than the rest. It even caught my attention more than Gears of War 2. I’ll get to that game and more in another post. The game I’m about to over hype is Far Cry 2. Yes, the game that not many people have been paying much attention to. And now a hopefully brief history on the franchise that everyone thought went down to hell.

-In 2004 Far Cry was released on PCs. Although it was a great game for its time, it was overshadowed by the simultaneous releases of the critically acclaimed Half Life 2, and Doom 3. Despite this, Far Cry was considered the first true next generation shooter. Boasting advanced A.I. and open world gameplay.

-In 2005 Far Cry Instincts came to the Xbox as an exclusive. It was an enhanced remake of the original. It kept the characters and basic plot points, but gave the playable main character, Jack Carver, new mutant feral abilities to unleash on his foes. The game was well received by critics and was considered one of the best shooters for the original Xbox.

-In 2006 Far Cry Evolution, the only sequel to Far Cry Instincts hits store shelves. The game was praised for gameplay, but got a noticeably lower review than its predecessor because it was more of the same and didn’t introduce anything new. Around the same time, Far Cry Instincts Predator was released on the Xbox 360. It had both Instincts and Evolution in a 2 games in 1 package for a great price. Both games were enhanced for widescreen HDTV play and ingame achievements. Otherwise there isn’t much difference to the originals.

-Sometime between 2006 and 2007, Uwe Boll, a mediocre movie maker who buys the rights to adapt video games into horribly produced movies. When news got around that Uwe Boll was coming out with a Far Cry movie sometime in ’08 and ’09, everyone just knew that Far Cry was going to be one of those games that started great and ended with a whimper.

-In 2007 Wii owners got a bad taste of the franchise with Far Cry Vengeance. It got horrible reviews for bad graphics and being virtually unplayable with the Wii’s cheap motion controls.

And now Far Cry 2 has come out of nowhere. The new game may have Far Cry in the title, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the original games. The island paradise setting, Jack Carver, and the strange mutant parts of the series have been completely removed. This new game is set in Africa. With over 50 kilometers of open ended play. Instead of just one annoying main character there are about 9 playable characters each with their own unique story. The game world is entirely open ended, like Grand Theft Auto. This game is entirely non-linear. You can play the game anyway you want, literally. You can choose to set fire to a village with a rocket or grenade, causing the enemy troops to back off allowing the player to flank them from behind. That’s just one of the 5 ways to play the game.

Another part of the gameplay that is new is the weather system. It stays sunny and dry if the player is doing well. Or it goes to a dark, rainy setting if the player isn’t doing too hot. The game has 3 types of explosives, and 30 different weapons. On a graphical note this game is the most beautiful shooter I have ever seen. This even beats out Crysis. Honestly, it looks as good, if not better, than real life. Blowing up stuff is fun; this game makes it look like an art. The minimum specs for the game to run on a pc have yet to be released. Don’t be surprised if you have to completely upgrade your rig just to start the game up.

Ubisoft is being tight lipped about the multiplayer aspect, but they say it’s going to be intense, and it will have the best map editor ever. I could go on and on. But I’ll save the rest for another time. This game is my #1 best in show, period. Look for it this fall on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.

Introduction
Time travel is probably the most thought inducing topic in the history of mankind. For those who love the past, just to be a spectator at the burning of Rome or Lincoln's Gettysburg address would be enough to elevate themselves to the highest of highs. With the advent of video games, historical voyeurs now have the opportunity to see an artistic rendition of that which has come before. Games in the Dynasty Warriors series have been met with deafening applause because of their historical accuracy and character association. Nevertheless, Koei does not have the monopoly on historically directed games. Capcom has entered the fray with their own 16th century epic, Onimusha: Warlords.

Gameplay
Two of the game's main characters, Nobunaga Oda and Tokichiro Kinoshita, are based on real-life Japanese historical figures. Nobunaga was one of Japan's greatest military leaders. His first major victory was in the defeat of the 25,000 man army of Imagawa Yoshimoto using only 3,000 troops. This battle is depicted in the opening credits of the game and it shows Oda's tactical knowledge at its best. His inhuman and viciousness mannerisms have been compared to those of Vlad Tepes Dracula and even Napoleon Bonaparte. Being the first Japanese warlord to arm his men with firearms, he was also one of the first leaders to incorporate the use of weather and landscape as part of his military strategy.

Tokichiro Kinoshita is the other historic character of the game. This character has been created to represent Hideyoshi Toyotomi, the true-life lieutenant of Oda. Toyotomi actually made Oda's dream a reality and unified Japan under one shogunate. However in this time that the game is set, the unification is far off and Kinoshita is just a bit player in the grand scheme of things.

While both of these previously mentioned characters are on the 'dark path of the Force,' the true hero is not in the history books. Samanosuke Akechi is a ronin (master-less) samurai. During his worldly travels, he receives a message from his former master's daughter asking for his help. The Inabayama Castle has been besieged by demon monsters and Princess Yuki is in fear for her life. Samanosuke rushes to her aid, but arrives at the castle too late to prevent her kidnapping. With the assistance of Kaede, a skilled female ninja who also is a limited playable character, he hopes to rescue the princess and rid the Mino province of this evil influence.

Onimusha: Warlords is billed as an action game. Although there is plenty of this, it is definitely more than just another hack-and-slash adventure. Cerebral traps and puzzles are generously sprinkled through the adventure. Unlike Resident Evil, Capcom's well known zombie killer series, there is not a lot of backtracking across great distances to solve most of these challenges. There are some instances where you will have to gather clues to unlock some of the coded chests, but these are mostly the exception rather than the rule for the gameplay. Special keys will usually appear right before they are needed and their corresponding doors can be reached by simply following a straight line by using concealed passages that were missed the first time through.

While the player will usually rely upon the prowess of their blade to see them past the many enemies, this is not the only weapon that you will wield. Kunai (throwing knives), bows and firearms are available for the playable characters to use. Most of the projectile ammunition is limited so it's best to save it for the proper occasion. Weapons can be exchanged on the fly without having to worry about letting the bad guys get in a couple of cheap shots. Moreover, each one is upgradeable using the souls of the defeated demons that you have captured.

Samanosuke is granted the use of a special gauntlet which collects the souls of the monsters he dispatches. There are various types of soul matter that can be only used for a specific purpose. Pink colored souls can be used for upgrading your equipment, yellow souls will return health to your character and blue colored ones will add to your magic meter. Depending on what the monster is, and how it is killed, directly reflects on what type and amount of soul matter will be released. If not captured in a timely manner, soul matter will eventually drift away.

Even though Onimusha was completed in the early part of the Playstation 2 lifecycle, it is still graphically impressive today. Environments are interactive and can be utilized to assist you in killing enemy forces. Ropes, fires, mist and other aspects of the game can be influenced by you or the demon characters. This truly keeps a player on their toes and makes them think outside the box for a unique answer to an everyday problem. Why should you go and duke it out with a horde of monsters, when you can simply cut a rope that is holding a cart up on a hill and let it do your light work? It's the simple touches like this that really makes Onimusha stand out above other action titles.

Some of the most interesting aspects of Onimusha are the sound options. Language and subtitles can be set to various combinations of English or Japanese. The background music and sound effect volumes can individually be adjusted. However, the most ingenious part of the game is in the stereo sound choices. You can set up the speakers to work in normal stereo, stereo specific or inverse stereo specific. What stereo specific means is that anything that would make a sound on the right side of the screen will come through the right side speakers. The really unique choice is the inverse stereo selection. If your character is facing towards you on screen and a sound comes from the left side of the screen, the sound will resonate through the right side speaker channels because the sound came from the character's right. This detail is unlike anything else I have experienced in a video game and it definitely was appreciated.

Probably the only disappointing aspect of the entire game would be the control setup. Even though the DualShock 2 is now completely analog, for some strange reason Capcom has restricted the character's movements to be done only through the directional pad. With the rest of the button function assignments making sense, and being exceptionally well designed, I have yet to fathom why Capcom went this direction with Onimusha since the left analog stick is not used at all in the game. Perhaps game developers will learn in the near future that it is us, the gamers, who are buying their games and each of us like to use their controller differently. I honestly can't believe that custom button configurations are that hard to incorporate into a game, especially after everything else that I have seen done in this title.

The only other minor gripe is the limited save point abilities of the game. You only can record your progress in one of the limited 'magic mirrors' scattered across the land. While these are also used for leveling up your equipment and weapons, I would have liked to simply be able to pause the game and save where I was rather than having to backtrack halfway across the level to find the last known mirror so that I could continue on with my real life. I realize that Onimusha is developed by the same company that created the Resident Evil series, and this game has its roots deep within that which came before. However, the typewriter save style was frustrating back in 1997, so why would they believe that today's players would desire to see it appear again? This is one of those questions that will plague mankind until the end of time.

Extras
Extras are plentiful in Onimusha: Warlords. An unlockable Onimusha 2 trailer is available once you complete the game. Extra costumes can be found by finishing the game with a superior ranking or finding special hidden items while playing the game. Moreover, if you find all twenty of the hidden Florite stones, a special mini-game is opened for the player. If the player can beat all twelve levels of this game, then access to an additional special mode for the story mode of Onimusha becomes available.

Conclusion
Onimusha: Warlords gives the player a quality product. Almost every ingredient, from the engrossing storyline, to the solid graphic engine and wondrous sound options brings this game to the forefront of the action genre. Even the static cameras, that usually are a distraction for most games, add to the overall movie-like feel that Onimusha was trying to bring about. This is definitely a game that gives the player the most bang for their gaming buck. I recommend that fans of all genres give this one at least a rental, but action fans should run out immediately and pick up a copy for their libraries.

Final Score: 8.9

During E308 Capcom reps were wearing a shirt with the box art, and so many fans and journalists wanted a shirt of their own Capcom has broken down and decided to make the shirts mass produced and available in the US and "available for purchase soon".
An accidental "slip of the tongue" apparently led Sega's Simon Jeffrey to announce Resident Evil 5 on Wii.

In fact they say that it should be a game that even 30-40 years olds or people who played the game when they were 15 years younger than today should feel right at home with SFIV, or at least that it what I understood from the translation.

Very interesting....we see in a few screen shots that Mega Man Noise change Ox fire is element less....possible you can choose elements? And their seems to be a level for how strong the noise change can be, as you see on the pictures above you see how deep in noise your changes are....this is definitely going to be a very big turn around for the series. And his buster is modified into a very cool cannon, just like in other pictures!! Plus you can also see Warrock (or omega-xis) in battle, he is now a wave card and can be used in battle his level one card is worth 100 and swings in a radius of a wide sword. There is also pictures of a new boss called Spade Magnets and he will have 400 hp at his first version. This game is really cool, I hope it just keeps getting better!

Oh and here are some cool pics of the noise changes:

Capcom has announced that Dead Rising for the Nintendo Wii is in development and will hit store shelves this Winter.

The game, which will be subtitled Chop Till You Drop, uses the same engine as the Wii version of Resident Evil IV, meaning you can point your Wiimote at hordes of zombies and shoot them wherever you please.

Capcom says that there will also be slash and bludgeon gestures, along with the ability to shake off zombie attacks during your fight for survival.

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop follows the tale of Frank West, a freelance journalist investigating some strange happenings in the small suburban town of Willamette. He flees to the local shopping mall, thinking it'll be a safe haven but it turns out to be anything but that.

Dead Rising first appeared on Xbox 360 in August 2006 and we felt it was a barrel of fun. Capcom promises improved save functionality in the Wii version, which should enable more seamless gameplay.

Are you excited by the prospects of playing Dead Rising again with a new level of interaction? Discuss in the forums.

Nobody? Not one person? Aww, c'mon.

There will be more of these sorts of exercises to come: things that don't apply theory or technique but rather call on a more creative and expressive skill set. Theory is excellent, but being able to apply that theory to what you're trying to express in layman's terms is going to help you communicate your ideas on a regular basis.

So, what do we do when there are no user comments? We roll up our sleeves and get down to business.

It should be noted that Capcom has said Sheva will be AI controlled when not playing with another person, so while they will not need levels that can be finished by one player alone, this was still taken into consideration for the exercise.

Here's my level description:

The players are in a shanty town; buildings are two stories max. The streets are narrow and crowded with boxes, with lots of small, intersecting streets. It is made clear through rubble and locked doors which way the players must advance.

The two players get an objective: make for the center of town, securing buildings on the way. The players must storm the buildings as they progress, either splitting up or attacking one building at a time together. Chris can use a co-op move to allow Sheva to vault to the second floor of a building while he comes in the front door.

As the players near the center of town, enemies will attack from behind on the streets as well, eventually pushing them into the center of town. Once there, players encounter a boss (lots of HP, deadly melee) and waves of normal enemies, some with guns. One of the players can man a gun turret near the middle of the combat area, while the other player works to keep enemies off the gunner's back, especially the boss.

PROS: This is going to be subject to some bias, but bear with me.

First of all, notice the short sentences -- when describing something like a game level to a colleague, the last thing you want to do is start rambling or going on about something unimportant. Be terse, and be precise, especially since that will spur people to contribute to your idea with their own ideas.

All major asset considerations are mentioned as well as the basic level construction: streets are narrow and full of meshes, impassible terrain is handled with rubble and locked doors, a turret gun will have to be made, a boss will have to be made if that type doesn't exist already, and a co-op move might need to be created. While none of this was specifically listed, this is what professionals are going to be picking out of your speech or writing and it's important to deliver all of that clearly and in context.

The general strategies for level completion are described, so people can visualize how they would get through the level themselves. The building entries and boss battle can also be completed without the second player.

CONS: I can't criticize myself. You guys tell me what would improve this level.

We're celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Japanese immigration in Brazil. That's why John had the idea of this special playlist. Well, he only doesn't know how far I am in my research (surprise, babe!)...

The first brainstorm with John was at The Go! Team concert last month, we listed mentally about 10 Japanese bands and bands with at least 1 Japanese descendant. Then I looked on my personal music database/CDs and asked for J-Pop and Rock stuff for my friends so now I have something around 30 interesting artists.

But I was wandering how this musical influence had started to be worldwide and I realized it's because the television and its super heroes and cartoons and video games! From Godzilla to anime, this part 1 is a simple (and extremely incomplete) collect to represent this invasion. There's a little encyclopedia in the end of the post. Enjoy!

Frankly speaking, I am kinda excited about this announcement, simply because its using RE4 engine!

But then I have a feeling this game is not really my type, I have tried the 360 version and I must say I didnt find it any fun to shoot, chop, slash or bomb herds of mindless zombies inside a building.

Nevertheless, I'll keep an eye on it.

But whats up with the subtext? Chop till you drop? Alamak cant they find another cooler phrase?
