Vamos por parte.

Primero hay que definir qué es o son los derechos de autor. Actualmente los mismos están amparados por leyes de copyrigth, lo que viene a decir que estos autores tienen derecho a cobrar por su labor y además debe estar protegida su obra. En la actualidad, con los avances de la tecnología  y de los tiempos en general, estas leyes y derechos están o debieran estar obsoletas. La razón de este "despropósito" es la siguiente: lo moral es reconocer la autoría, que nadie sin permiso se lucre del trabajo de otro y que en todo caso sea el autor y no otro el beneficiado, además de proteger contra plagio al autor. Este "despropósito" es el que hay que legislar e inculcar en la sociedad. ¿Qué significa esto? Que tú puedes bajarte una canción o la discografía completa de un cantante, o leer un libro de un escritor en pdf o ver la película que está en el cine sin pagarle a nadie, eso sí, no te puedes pagiar la obra disfrutada ni puedes comercializarla, porque para hacerlo tú que lo haga quien lo trabajó. Esto implica que se pague por formatos, no por obras. Pagarás un libro de Arturo Pérez Reverte, pero no por su pdf. Pagarás por comprar un disco de Bisbal en una tienda, pero no por grabarlo en tu disco duro o en tu mp3 o en un cd que no vas a vender a nadie. Pagarás por ir al cine o por alquilar el DVD, pero no por bajarte la película en tu ordenador o por verlo en tu DiVX.

Segundo. Hay que darse cuenta que las millonadas de pelas que maneja la industria del entretenimiento, que ganan y que invierten en publicidad para que todos deseemos como la vida misma comprar sus productos, es una trampa. A parte de lo que ganan a costa de los incáutos consumidores, además se les pena por no comprar cuando optan por otras formas de hacerse con este tipo de cultura y entretenimiento. ¡No señores! No podemos consentir esto.

Tercero. Ni los programadores, ni los escritores, ni los músicos, ni los actores, etc. van a morir de hambre. Las ganancias de estas industrias es tal que podrían seguir comiendo, y muy bien, con lo que ganan, aunque nos diese a todos por fomentar la "piratería".

Ya es hora que todo se ponga en su lugar. Un albañil ejecuta una obra intelectual, y cobra para sobrevivir. ¿Por qué un programador de Microsoft o de Sony o un actor de cine o un famoso cantante debe ser millonario? Que se vayan todos a la mierda, como diría Fernando Fernández Gómez. Reto a todos los cineastas que no hagan películas, a los músicos que no saquen discos, a los escritores que no publiquen sus obras, a los programadores que no saquen programas informáticos o juegos de la PSP. No serían capaces, porque sencillamente, las cuentas les salen. Eso sí, ganan un poquito menos con la "piratería", tienen para un Rolex menos o algo así. Por cierto, si despiden a un señor de Albacete que trabajaba en Sony Music o a una señora de Murcia que trabajaba en Microsoft, no es por el incremento de descargas "ilegales", es porque les sale de los cojones a sus directivos y punto.

¡Qué me cabreo con la idotez humana!

Here's the first part of my "Dandelion Challenge". The light comes from a LED electric torch (not blue).

EF 70-200mm f/4L USM -> "L" lens (means optical better than non "L" lens), sharpness and contrast are better than EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM, constant aperture 4, doesn't extend when zoom.

EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM -> Has IS function that can reduce handshake, longer focal length range, lighter than EF 70-200 f/4L USM.

For me, image quality and sharpness is my priority. If I must choose one of them, I'll definitely choose EF 70-200mm f/4L USM. Because EF 70-200mm f/4L USM doesn't have IS, shoot at low light you will need a "tripod". I don't say EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is bad; if you use camera to capture an event or moment (photo journalistic) I think it's better to use it because it has IS function and longer focal length. For an event or moment, image quality isn't the first priority; the first priority is "the moment" inside the picture.

This is my entry into the weekly challenge in the Macro Untouched group on Redbubble. The theme was "Shoe" so I decided to sway a little from the obvious footwear images and pulled out an old friend of mine: an exceptionally old Voigtlander Ultramatic CS 35mm camera built like a Sherman tank with "Made in West Germany" stamped on the bottom that I used in High school for my film work. This is the flash shoe which is detachable from the camera as you had to plug in the flash in elsewhere and not through the shoe. Modern technology at it's best in the 50's. Or maybe it was the 60's. Not sure.

On the other end of the technology spectrum, I had my 30D with me all day and had a few cool shots around the shop, in the flowering trees around the entrance and I also got a shot of the mirror like pond on my way home with the reeds in the background and the sunset reflecting in the water. Plenty of material to choose from for the daily image. I got in the house and went to turn on the computer and looked down at the CF card reader in front of the tower.......there was already a card in the reader. The card I thought was in the camera. My palm print is still on my forehead and the "shoot w/o card" feature (useless feature if you ask me now) is disabled. Live and learn I guess.

In the end, though, everything happens for a reason, and the reason is me and my old film camera getting reacquainted.

Ahora les toca a las empresas productoras, grabadoras y distribuidoras de discos, un producto que ha gozado de excelente salud económica y que ha creado grandes fortunas. Pero hoy ya no se dan aquellos legendarios discos de platino a artistas que arrasan en los topten, por mucho que se quiera conservar la fachada a base de Grammys o Alejandros Sanz. La excepción confirma la regla, en todo caso, y apunta hacia otro dato. Los conciertos no parecen estar en crisis. A la gente le sigue gustando escuchar música y está dispuesta a pagar por ello, incluida la incomodidad del desplazamiento. Pero se resiste a pagar por un archivo que puede bajarse de Internet.

La culpa de la crisis la tienen pues los sitios p2p, los top manta y las grabadoras de CDs y DVDs. ¿Vamos a prohibir todo esto, o a recargarlo con un canon fiscal? Las grandes empresas y los cantantes millonarios pueden llorar al ver que el negocio se derrumba, pero no podrán impedir la popularización de nuevas formas de grabar, difundir y vender música. La tecnología no mira hacia atrás.

In my travels lately, and that includes my walks into Chinatown for lunch (because there's no shortage of tourists there to watch), I've noticed that big black cameras are the new must-have fashion accessory.

People used to carry normal cameras, and for a while the trend was the-smaller-the-better, but these days they're kitted out like modern-day Ansel Adamses (or Annie Leibovitzes if that's your gender preference). I saw a guy on Lantau Island who had 3 of the suckers draped around his neck, with lenses so long he was probably photographing landmarks in China rather than Hong Kong.

I'm all for bringing power to the people and let's face it, an entry level DSLR is a very attainable object these days. In 2007 sales grew  by about 42% over the previous year, and they're predicted to grow another 22% this year.

I like to watch people drive these big black beasts. If you're a manual car driver you can probably tell what kind of car someone is driving, and how they're driving it, by watching them for a minute. Are they changing gears manually? Do they use the handbrake or the clutch on hills? It's the same thing really. Watching someone take photos I can guess what settings their camera is on, how they've got the focus set up, whether they understand the distance their flash will travel or not.

As you'd expect, a lot of people have their cameras set on auto, quite a few use a shutter or aperture priority and not too many people are set to fully manual. There's a fair bit of point-and-shoot snapshotting going on, but I've been really surprised by the number of people who are taking their time to get a cool angle and compose a scene. We've become a photographically visually-literate society and a lot of people are having fun exploring that, which is great to see.

But I wonder: Is a DSLR overkill for a lot of the photography I'm observing? Or just downright less fun?

I mention all this because it was my partner Yang's birthday this week and we had an addition to the family that went in the opposite direction. We've now got a Canon Powershot S5 IS in the house, which isn't tiny, but i think is what they class "compact" in retail-speak.

In addition to heavy equipment I've got a little cigarette-packet sized, underpowered Nikon I carry in my bag, but it's been ages since I owned a compact camera, and I'd forgotten how flexible and how much fun they were. This one has image stabiliser, face recognition (new to me, kind of spooky, but you've got to love it), macro, something called super-macro, a pretty impressive zoom range and more shooting programs hidden in its menus than you could poke a lens at. And it's about half the size and a quarter of the weight of the DSLR I carry around to do the same thing (and that's without a macro lens in the bag as well).

It's left me thinking that bigger is not necessarily better. Well, at least in this instance.

I'm not about to trade down my SLR for a compact, because I need the raw format and the control of fine points like bokeh for what I do, but it feels like the difference between driving a Rolls Royce and driving a sporty little convertible. Sometimes I think it's fun to feel the wind in your hair.

Canon 1D MKIII vs Nikon D3 Autofocus Showdown!

If you have heard the autofocus in the 1D MKIII has been troublesome since the day it came out. But the lastest firmware has shown a 9% improvement. From the latest test from the nice people at ProPhoto says Canon 1D MKIII out performs the Nikon D3. Read the rest of the review HERE!

That said, it's looking to be a great weekend for car lovers.  I'm seeing everything from '49 Mercurys to 60's era pickups, to sparkling imports and domestic tuners--and that's just on the morning drive to work.  If this is what people are commuting in this summer, I can't wait to see what they drive on the weekend!

*FYI--I don't really drive a Batmobile, that's just what my Fiancee calls our new Mazda3 Sport wagon. Sadly, attaching rocket boosters and heat-seeking missiles to the car isn't allowed under the Canadian Firearms Act, so that's as close to a real batmobile as I'll probably get.

One final note:  Don't forget to pick up your copy of Canadian Hot Rods & Classics Magazine at Chapters St. Vital before they're gone.  This issue is jammed with great articles on some really great rides!

En la primera foto estamos con mi esposa Paz sólo unos meses después de haber llegado a Québec en el Estadio Olímpico durante una visita relámpago a Montréal. En este caso si lo usé para poder hacer el autoretrato final ya habiendo tomado tras la cámara por lo menos unas 9 fotos verticales para cubrir el interior del estadio. En ese tiempo sólo con una cámara compacta Canon Powershot A510 y un trípode de plástico Optex hice varias panorámicas... incluso hubo más de una para la cual no utilicé trípode... como aca abajo en una panorámica del cine StarCité de la autoruta Duplessis en Québec (ahora cerrado) en donde hice las fotos a mano alzada. Se puede ver a Paz leyendo aburrida esperando el bus (RTC 93) que pasa cada 2 horas los fines de semana por ese sector... creo que fue la vez que fuimos a ver King-Kong.

Las panorámicas nos abren un mundo de posibilidades sobre todo cuando no tenemos el equipo necesario como para hacer tomas que haríamos normalmente con un gran o incluso ultra gran ángulo... y sobre todo permitiéndonos obtener imágenes que llegan facil a los 15 MegaPixel al combinar varias fotos. Como en todas las cosas hay distintos niveles para hacerlo dependiendo del equipo que tenemos. Un buen programa para unir sus fotografías, y gratuito, es Autostich que fue desarrollado por Matthew Brown en la Universidad de British Columbia en Vancouver, Canada. Con este programa incluso no es necesario ordenar las fotografías... sólo le indicas las fotos que formarán la panorámica y listo. Sólo deberán notar que las optiones por defecto entregan una imagen de calidad reducida y a escala... pero pueden cambiarlo como muestra la imágen. Para mayor detalles hagan click sobre el cuadro de diálogo para ver un paso a paso.

Además puedes construir panorámicas no sólo uniendo fotos horizontalmente sino verticalmente también como lo hice para esta vista de la basse-ville de Québec.

« PERO ESO NO ES TODO »

...estamos lejos de llegar al fondo del tema, ya que además de la fotografía panorámica existe la:

• esférica
• cúbica
• cilíndrica
• 360° x 180°
• 360° x 360°
• VR (virtual reality)

A este nivel el trípode es un "MUST" como dicen, y no sólo eso, los cabezales (nodal ninja, 360precision, manfrotto, etc.) toman una importancia aún mayor para obtener estas imágenes... lo que obviamente sube bastante el costo de equipamiento. No sé si han escuchado hablar del punto nodal pero es la clave del asunto. Es el punto en que la imagen es invertida en el plano del diafragma y la idea es que este punto no se mueva durante las tomas de todas las imágenes. Para que les quede más claro encontré este video en el sitio fromparis.com en donde Eric Rougier explica muy claro el procedimiento completo para obtener una imagen de realidad virtual partiendo de la toma de fotografías hasta la representación gráfica con el programa especializado PTViewer. Aunque no entiendan el francés pueden guiarse por las imágenes y se harán una idea del proceso. También pueden ver el resultado final aqui... genial ah!

Flash wrap: This is basically wide hook and loop velcro attached back to back. It is adjustable. It wraps all the way around my Sunpak PZ5000 with about 2 inches to spare. Used for attaching bounce cards, gel holders, the new Honel Grid I did it this way to avoid gluing or permanently attaching the velcro to my flash. Loop side always closest to flash.

Bounce Card: See photo. there is really not more to say about it. This is silver colored foam crafts paper.

Snoots: The Long snoot is 18 inches which is a tad long, but more for experiment sake. The shorter is 12 inches. The velcro flash wrap is pictured also, but fairly out of focus. for the snoots, I used the thinner velcro (about 1" wide) running the entire length of the snoot. You also do not need the velcro wrap to put these on the flash.

Ik heb het dan ook over Bert Stephani. Een fotograaf waarmee ik maandag mee op fotoshoot trok. Daarover later meer. Maar wat ik je wel kan tonen is een filmpje waarin Bert zijn materiaal uit de doeken doet. Met daarbij natuurlijk ook de hoe en het waarom.

Maandag heb ik dan ook de kans gekregen om een aantal van Bert's lenzen eens te mogen gebruiken en ik was erg onder de indruk.

De lenzen die ik met graagte op mijn 400D schroefde waren:
EF 24-70mm f2.8 L
EF 70-200mm f2.8 IS L (absoluut mijn favoriete lens)
EF 17-40mm f 4 L (zeker mijn volgende aankoop)

Enkel een probleempje eens je een L-reeks lens probeert wil je niet meer terug. Dus dat wordt sparen geblazen.

Although, I am actually still away from home now and is writing this entry in a hotel, I thought I really should write something because this blog has reached over 300,000 hits since I first started it on 19th June 2007.

I would like to thank all my readers for supporting my blog. I will try to update this blog more regularly after I get home next week. I have taken lots of photos, and eaten lots of good food and learnt new things in the audiovisual world during the last few months and I hope to write new blog articles on all these things in the coming weeks and months.

I would like to end with a photo I took at Jiuziagou last year. I will write a fuller articel on Jiuzahigou later.

En cuanto a la buena literatura primero fue porque Liwiz habló de Volpi y pues ya saben lo que opino de ese pelmazo.
Después me acordé de otra ocasión en que Cybergus criticaba duramente Carlos Cuauhtemoc Sanchez, me dije, ni que Cybergus supiera tanto.
Sí me enoja cuando vanaglorian a los que se sienten grandes sin serlo, y también me enoja cuando tratan de hacer trizas a mediocres evidentes; es una perdida de tiempo.
Después Aline, que si ha leído todo lo que dice, y parto de que le creo, no entiendo como su cabeza no ha asimilado nada y actúa como una líder de tianguis.

La reflexión de fondo responde a esta evidente subjetividad del “buena literatura”.
Por otro lado es una mentada esa frase de “en gustos se rompen géneros”, existe el criterio, la estética, y hasta el sentido común...en fin.

En mi humilde opinión estoy de acuerdo con Harold Bloom...el tiempo es muy corto para leer tonterías.
Leer a Benedetti es como escuchar trova en un momento en el cual ya muchas cosas las hemos superado, ¿no creen?
