<title><![CDATA[How to Narrow a Research Topic]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I've just finished revamping the second module of the new online info lit class, "The Skillful Researcher," a collaboration between the library and University College.  The module is on "Narrowing Your Topic." The students are writing a hypothetical research paper; they are doing all the research and creating an annotating bibliography as their final project. The second module is very important, since it's where they pick their topic for research, and create a few potential research questions.</p>
<p>The students have already selected one of 5 broad topics we give them - education, food, human rights, music, or sports. For the assignment and discussion posting, they have to come up with 2-3 research questions that are appropriate for writing a hypothetical 8-12 page research paper.</p>
<p>Here are the techniques we're teaching them:</p>
<p>1) <strong>Brainstorming. </strong>We have them complete a worksheet where they can talk about what they already know about a topic, what interests them about it, and what they would like to know more about.</p>
<p>2) <strong>Concept Mapping.</strong> I found this really cool YouTube video demonstrating how to do this:</p>

<p>3) <strong>Reviewing What's Out There. </strong>We have them select an article from a list on various aspects of their broad topics. All the articles are from CQ Researcher, which is great for topic overviews and includes nice bibliographies. I created a Camtasia video on how to use CQ Researcher, and directions are presented in an Articulate template.</p>
<p>4) <strong>Defining Certain Aspects</strong>. A tutorial created using Articulate demonstrates how they can narrow a broad topic by looking at thing such as certain time frames, geographical locations, types of people, and/or aspects (sociological, economical, legal, etc.).</p>
<p>Since it's only a one-credit class, and this module only lasts one week, we can't teach much more than this. Another technique that I would like to teach (possibly if we create a "Skillful Researcher 2") is how to review what's out there by looking in library catalogs and databases. This gets a little more complicated but is a great skill for students to learn.</p>
<p>If anyone has other methods they teach students, I'd be interested to hear what they are! I'm hoping these 4 will be a good foundation for them, but any feedback would be appreciated as well.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I spent the better part of yesterday creating <a href="http://infosoup.blip.tv/file/1044170/">a screencast for InfoSoup</a> on how to use a new feature in the catalog called Community Reviews. After having Rick and Gerri take a look at it, I've made it public at our newly created <a href="http://infosoup.blip.tv/file/1044170/">InfoSoup show on blip.tv</a> and Community Reviews is now available in InfoSoup with a blog announcing the new feature with the screencast included. I'm pretty happy with the results and hope patrons will find it helpful and enjoy the reviews feature.</p>
<p>After spending an entire day recording, re-recording, re-recording, and RE-RECORDING (arg!!!), I learned an awful lot about creating screencasts! All of the materials I included in my last post on <a href="http://castingkit.wordpress.com/2008/06/30/getting-started-with-screencasting/">Getting Started With Screencasting</a> were incredibly helpful, but here are a few tips I'd like to highlight from my experiences.</p>
<ul>
<li>Decide what host you'll be using to post your screencast to. This may dictate what resolution you'll record your screencast in. I chose blip.tv as it provided a higher resolution than YouTube, which is helpful when trying to demonstrate things in an OPAC.</li>
<li>Do your screen recording first, without your voice. This allows you to focus on what you want to show, rather than what you're saying. It's relatively easy to add voice narration in Camtasia after you've recorded what you want to show, and you can pause and re-start the video motion as you record what you want to say.</li>
<li>Watch your mouse movements! I didn't realize how much I'm always flipping my mouse around and scrolling up and down unnecessarily until I recorded my actions. It's very distracting to watch, so be sure to limit your mouse movement and always place your cursor by the area you're trying to highlight on the screen.</li>
<li>Add "callouts" to your recording to highlight what you want people to see or follow. It's easy and adds a lot of value to your presentation.</li>
<li>Be forgiving of verbal flubs. I probably recorded my voice narration 40 times before I was happy with it, but I think I could have stopped well before that if I were more forgiving of small stutters or loss of train of thought.</li>
</ul>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yesterday, I delivered a seminar titled <strong>Supporting collaborative activities using Wikis</strong>, which formed the part of the <a href="http://tasterseries.wordpress.com/">Enhancing Teaching Through Technology</a> Summer Seminar Series at the <a href="http://www.bath.ac.uk/">University of Bath</a>. The session, was attended by both colleagues from around the University campus, including some from the e-Learning team.</p>

<p>We're currently evaluating our approach to training sessions, workshops and the like, so I've also taken the opportunity to also examine my own style of presenting, starting with my PowerPoint slides. I must say a huge thank you to Alison Wildish, Head of <a href="http://blogs.bath.ac.uk/webservices/">Web Services</a>, who gave me some useful tips on how to make my slides more visual. The slides, which are available available as well as on <a href="http://www.slideshare.net/nrparmar/">SlideShare</a>, took about a month to come together and went through numerous drafts [including some last minute tweaking whilst watching <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/apprentice/">The Apprentice</a> the night before!].</p>

<p>The session was recorded using <a href="http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp">Camtasia</a>, which whilst being an excellent piece of software, was let down by a rather poor audio recording. Therefore, I'm unable to make the recording available at this stage. I'm working on it!</p>
<p>During question time towards the end of the session, some issues came to the fore, which I thought might be useful mentioning here.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Is it possible to say that Moodle and </strong><strong><a href="http://wiki.bath.ac.uk/">Confluence</a> are "rivals/competitors"?</strong> Um, I'd say no. Moodle is a Virtual Learning Environment which offers a multitude of activities to support collaborative activities online, such as discussion forums, facilities for online discussion, a quiz activity for e-assessment as well as a very basic, but functional, wiki. Confluence is a "best of breed" wiki application which offers both basic and advanced wiki functionality. Both services can be used side by side, and do complement each other. Do remember that it is possible to link to a Confluence wiki from within a Moodle course.</li>
<li><strong>Can colleagues external to the University of Bath get access to protected Confluence wikis? </strong>Yes that can, though a University of Bath staff member will need to apply for a <a href="http://www.bath.ac.uk/bucs/tools/waaa/">BUCS Lite</a>-type account on their behalf.</li>
<li><strong>Is it possible to import SAMIS groups into Confluence?</strong> Not currently, however this work is plans for sometime in the next few months.</li>
<li><strong>Which team in the University is responsible for Confluence?</strong> The Web Service teams currently look after Confluence. For more information, send an email to <a href="mailto:support-wiki@bath.ac.uk">support-wiki@bath.ac.uk</a></li>
</ul>
<p>Overall, I was pleased with how the session went. I was apprehensive about delivering it, though I really shouldn't have been. The e-Learning team, as well as the wider <a href="http://www.bath.ac.uk/learningandteaching/">Learning and Teaching Enhancement Office</a>, is an exceptionally supportive environment, which made for a less fraught experience. I was also apprehensive about how my stammer would be on the day, but all in all, it/I was fine. Some further reflections follow:</p>
<ul>
<li>When explaining the concept of restricting access to a wiki space in Confluence, I should have made mentioned that the permissions in the applications are restrictive enough to limit viewing and editing rights at page level tool.</li>
<li>I would have liked to have a couple more discussion points in the session, with the intention of both engaging with the audience a bit more, as well as giving myself a break from talking. I expect this area to develop as I become more confidence with the content and style of delivery.</li>
<li>The previous point, of course, needs to be balanced with the amount of content. There was a lot to say and get out there, and I think I did ok.</li>
<li>The model titled <strong>Developing the use of Wikis </strong>only really came together a couple of days before the session itself. I would have liked to have had more time to develop my thoughts on this before the session. [see next steps]</li>
</ul>
<p>Something that I am attempting to introduce into my blog writing is the concept of "next steps". As such, some appear below:</p>
<ul>
<li>Re-evaluate content of the sessions and think about whether or not anything needs to be added or removed. For example, I could introduce some about barriers to engagement. If I was being critical about the presentation, I would say that it was a little too much on the evangelical side.</li>
<li>Test the technology before going live with it. I was really disappointed that the audio didn't come out as expected. We've got a good quality USB microphone that my colleague <a href="http://rogergardner.wordpress.com/">Roger Gardner</a> might trial during his session on <strong>Exploring Social Bookmarking</strong> next Tuesday lunchtime.</li>
<li>Finally, drive my research towards discovering what the intervention points actually are in the model mentioned above. This would form part of a wider literature review.</li>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When I recorded the <a href="http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/">CCBC</a> workshop we hosted on April 23rd, I had no idea I was going to have such trouble posting it online for people to view. The Sony Handycam I purchased worked great, as did the wireless microphone system that goes with it, so that wasn't the problem. (Except for my amateurish, nausea-inspiring mis-mastery of the controls throughout the recording!)</p>
<p>The problem came when I tried to import the recording into Camtasia or Windows Movie Maker. I could view the file just fine in Windows Media Player, but Camtasia wouldn't load it at all and Windows Movie Maker gave me the audio but not the video. After much searching and fussing about I <em>finally</em> tried downloading a video converter (<a href="http://www.download.com/WM-Converter/3000-2194_4-10700602.html?cdlPid=10726409">WM Converter</a> to be specific) to see if the format was the problem. Sure enough! Once I converted the file to .avi both programs imported the video swimmingly and I could move on to edit the videos. (Why both programs won't work with mpeg-2 files is beyond me! I have to check the camcorder's documentation to see if I can change the recording format and fix that problem. I don't want to have to convert every video I create or have to teach our members how to do this with their projects!)</p>
<p>So I thought the worst was over. But no. One more converter required. I pulled in some license-free music from <a href="http://ccmixter.org/">CCMixter</a> for some intro music, but couldn't edit it to shorten it or add fade ins or fade outs. Turns out Camtasia doesn't like mp3 files either, so I had to download an audio converter (<a href="http://www.download.com/Free-Mp3-Wma-Converter/3000-2140_4-10442362.html">Free MP3 Wma Converter</a> to be precise) to convert it to a .wav file. Everything worked fine after that, but I'm thinking how the heck am I going to provide training on all the converting I'm having to do?!</p>
<p>After all this, I STILL don't have an end product I can post on the web. It appears that the conversion process makes the video kinda funky - the speaker's lips don't match the audio, so it's a bit like watching a foreign film that has been dubbed over in English. So! I'm still plugging away on this project, trying to figure things out, and trying to decide if this is anything I can ever train our members on. If I didn't want to edit the recording, it would be no problem, just load and go, but I suspect that we'll want to edit projects and so will figure this out.</p>
<p>I'm looking forward to working on podcasts instead and hope they'll be easier!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As part of a wider review of online support then we need to decide on how we use Camtasia screen casts. I like them, however I think they have serious drawbacks when people implement them. In particular, they tend to be over long, they don't include much interaction (so quite passive for the viewer), then are difficult to maintain, and time consuming to create. So our house style should include;</p>
<ul>
<li>should be short. No more than 2 minutes.</li>

We'll produce these with the student intern that we recruit over the summer.  The process will be that the LTO will agree on the style and the storyboard. Then they will work with the Intern to design the storyboard. The intern will create the first interaction for editing / discussion. Then when happy we will publish.</p>

<description><![CDATA[Once again, I chose to challenge myself and learn about another new Web 2.0 tool called Camtasia 5.0]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Once again, I chose to challenge myself and learn about another new Web 2.0 tool called Camtasia 5.0 (30 day trial version) to create a <a href="http://www.screencast.com/t/z2HHIFAFfK" target="_blank">video documenting the process</a> that I went through to create my Major Digital Project for EC&#38;I 831 and then decided to do a video reflection about <a href="http://www.screencast.com/t/prH9ZnvK60" target="_blank">my EC&#38;I 831 Journey</a>.  I didn't realize just how much of a challenge I was up for.</p>
<p>A few months ago I downloaded <a href="http://www.jingproject.com/" target="_blank">Jing</a> and used it to create a tutorials about <a href="http://www.screencast.com/t/HeZe04Zx" target="_blank">how to use Ning</a> and <a href="http://www.screencast.com/t/GSs85NrM2" target="_blank">what is RSS and using Google Reader</a>.  I found Jing fairly user friendly and had few problems using it.  Perhaps one of the downfalls (or perhaps it is a good thing) is that Jing only allows 5 minutes of recording time.  I wanted to experiment with <a href="http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp" target="_blank">Camtasia</a>, but found out that it was no longer freely available.  Then I heard that there was a free 30 day trial available while watching the great videos that my classmate <a href="http://www.screencast.com/users/Mathman33" target="_blank">Walter</a> had created and Jing began coming up with viruses on my computer (not sure why).</p>
<p>I downloaded the free 30 day trial of Camtasia and went into the program and had to double-check that I had not accidentally opened <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/features/details/moviemaker.mspx" target="_blank">Windows Movie Maker</a>, because it looked very similar, which sort of disappointed me because I had already learned and used Movie Maker at the beginning of the semester to create <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZcEFYyFym4" target="_blank">my bio video</a>.  Right now, I am thinking it would not have been bad if it was like Movie Maker!  Camtasia has the same layout as far as the timeline, storyboard and some of the editing features, but then goes beyond that to let you capture video, audio and information from Powerpoint too.</p>
<p>I viewed several of the <a href="http://video.techsmith.com/camtasia/5/edu/quickstart/enu/default.html" target="_blank">tutorial videos</a> that Camtasia has available, however, I am one of those people that learns by doing, so watching a video is only average for me - I have to dive in.  I wrote a bit of an outline so that I did not miss anything and then opened a number of tabs in Firefox so that I could move seamlessly from one idea to the next.  This worked fairly well, but I had to record several times because at first, I could not recognize when the recording had started, then I was forgetting to include some things, and towards the end, I was losing my voice due to coughing with the cold I picked up last week.  After all of the battles with recording, I finally had a finished recording which I now needed to put together on the timeline.  This part wasn't too bad, but it was difficult to align the video with the audio sometimes and took a bit of fine-tuning.</p>
<p>When I finally had all of the information that I wished to include, I went to produce the video.  The rendering took a really long time and then was in a format that <a href="http://www.screencast.com/Default.aspx" target="_blank">Screencast.com</a> did not recognize, which was frustrating since Screencast.com is where Camtasia suggests you upload your video to and I had chosen the format that Camtasia suggests.  After re-rendering several times, in various formats, and then changing how I got the video into Screencast.com, I had my first video ready.  Whew!!  One more to go - oh no!</p>
<p>Actually, when you consider that I didn't spend tonnes of time learning all of the features of Camtasia, the videos turned out alright.  I hope to spend some more time tinkering with Camtasia and see if there is an easier way to render, because this part really made my computer work (it was humming and I was ready for it to either start hovering or go up in smoke).</p>
<p>Anyways, in the end, I created the two videos that I was aiming for, so I am happy despite my struggles.</p>

<p>Estos programas de grabacion de estas caracteristicas se caracterizan por grabar lo que haces en la PC, con el siguiente metodo:<br />
*Cada tantas milesimas, centesimas o desimas de segundo toman una foto. Cuando ya pasa el minuto aproximadamente un buen programa de grabacion a sacado 20 fotos o mas.</p>
<p>Cuando terminas de grabar, todas estas fotos se unen tan rapido que hace apareser el video y de verdad queda con MUY buena calidad.</p>
