True scientific knowledge, on the contrary, demands abandonment to the very life of the object
-- G.W.F. Hegel, Preface, The Phenomenology of Mind

Discourse of all kind is heavily embedded with speech that has previously occurred, typically in the form of the first person direct quotation.
-- Joel Sherzer, quoted in Michael Taussig (1993, p. 109), quoted here.

Another installment of "Monday Morning Madness," a double feature in fact, that begins with a song/performance that I very much enjoyed the first time I witnessed it on Dimanche Gras in 1992 in Trinidad, during the Calypso Monarch finals in Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain. I was pretty sure that I was one of very few people who thought the performance by Singing Sonia was enjoyable and distinctive, so I am thankful that a Trinidadian "youtuber" seems to have picked this for uploading, among the dozens and even hundreds of candidates from years gone by.

And, as seen below, I think a lot is going on in Sonia's performance, teaching anthropology and social theory at every step.

Sonia in the Shadow of the Mighty Finds Originality

The ever charming Singing Sonia performs a piece called, "Professional Advice" -- the advice coming from The Mighty Shadow, who is the author of the song, and this is just the start of the tension between learning and creation, between originality and mimesis. First let me say the performance was, as far as I can tell, unprecedented, and nothing similar has been done since. The melody has a Ska beat, with some of the big brass of modern calypso, featuring dramatic bursts that might remind one of theme music for a James Bond film, interspersed with a staccato rhythm and an innocent looking bird dance to suit. During calypso monarch finals, and given the finite number of standard calypso melodies (and only one for ex tempo performances -- you can get a sample of that here), yes, definitely not part of the crowd. Also "original" was the fact that she was impersonating another calypsonian, and doing it very well, adopting his voice, his mannerisms, his dance. Singing Sonia did not win the crown, by the way, so perhaps the judges frowned on innovation, even when it bore the imprimatur of a figure as great as The Mighty Shadow, who put in an appearance in the performance itself, as seen in the first video below.

The wonder of mimesis lies in the copy drawing on the character and power of the original, to the point whereby the representation may even assume that character and that power. In an older language, this is "sympathetic magic," and I believe it as necessary to the very process of knowing as it is to the construction and subsequent naturalization of identities.
-- Michael Taussig (1993, pp. xiii-xiv)

First, about the singing. Sonia sings with her hands, so one should look at them as she sings -- they punctuate. Note also the very smooth voices of her backup singers, who play in the role of the girls in the circle ... I have yet to explain that one. Sonia sings in two voices, mirrored by her split costume. On her right, she sings mimicking Shadow, the darker side of her (without suggesting any moral quality here). On her left, she sings in her own voice, the lighter side, and she seems to have chosen a dress that resembles a wedding gown.

The chanter chanting creates and occupies a strange position, inside and outside. ...This is not to be confused with liminality because it is both positions at one and the same time.
-- Michael Taussig (1993, p. 111)

Sonia has become the shadow of The Shadow, a corporeal photograph, and in that there is magic, for as Taussig tells us, among the Cuna of Panama their notion of "purpa" (spiritual doubles) includes the shadow and the photograph (1993, p. 101).

Sonia even borrows Shadow's "ay-yay-yay" line, singing it in his heavy voice, and then alternating with her own broad voice. She claims to be learning, to be taking the professional advice, and boasts of her originality, and does this by dividing herself, and always seeking out her master. The mimetic faculty, as Taussig (1993, p. xviii) argues, involves the compulsion to become the Other -- Sonia is here performing an attempt at shamanic / anthropological crossing into the Other, into the Shadow. By imitating Shadow, she acquires Shadow.

the chanter chants [herself] into the scene. [She] exists not just as a subject but also as a mimeticised Other. In this way, as both chanter and person chanted about, as demonstrator and demonstrated, [she] creates the bridge between original and copy that brings a new force, the third force of magical power, to intervene in the human world.
-- Michael Taussig (1993, p. 106)

Is Sonia's performance a statement on the classic education pattern of the colonial, West Indian, "Afro-Saxon"? Or is it something much more fundamental?

Now the strange thing about this silly if not desperate place between the real and the really made-up is that it appears to be where most of us spend most of our time as epistemically correct, socially created, and occasionally creative beings. We dissimulate. We act and have to act as if mischief were not afoot in the kingdom of the real and that all around the ground lay firm.
-- Michael Taussig (1993, p. xvii)

Second, I would ask the viewer to pay attention to Sonia's dance. Her dance visually mimics the staccato of the music, but also the famous up-and-down bounce of her mentor, The Mighty Shadow, who in a culture of elaborate "wining" restricted his movements to a kind of skip-rope style, going against the grain. She takes that on for this song, and adds a dance routine of her own, performed when she is not singing. I am calling it a bird dance since it seems to mimic some of the movements of a bird. She dances around the stage like a lone, lost, little birdie, her little wings attempting to fly, and look at how she steps out in the darkness of the stage looking for orientation, scouting for her parent. The dance also conveys innocence, and Sonia never ceases to smile. There is no point in seeking and being open to advice if you do not have some "innocence."

One of the key elements of the song is the repetition of "girl, show me your motion!" People who went to school in the Caribbean would immediately recognize where that line comes from. It is about learning and performing in the school yard, encouraged by peer spectator-participants, in a ring game. What happens is that little school girls, as shown in the second of today's videos, form a circle, with one girl in the centre. Those forming the circle sing: "There's a brown girl in the ring, tra la la la, and she looks like a sugar and a plum, plum, plum. Girl show me your motion!" Then the girl in the centre is supposed to make some physical movement, a motion.

Protean Sonia appears split into two, one side her master, the other side her emergent self. In her dance at the end, as the crowd erupts in applause as Shadow appears on stage, she dances over to meet him. They then part -- he takes the centre of the ring, conveniently provided by the logo of Carib beer. She dances around the perimeter. From the girl in the ring she has now become a moon orbiting Shadow, a satellite that is half illuminated by him, copier revolving around copied. The bird dance has now turned into a playful enactment of centre and periphery. The divided self, resulting from a child that has undergone mentoring, is one that exists in a state of tension between originality and mimicry. The blurred dividing line between learning and mimicry places a question mark over authenticity, originality, and even sovereignty. The self becomes impossible without the other, by viewing oneself in the eyes of the other. And their relationship spans the spectrum as tutoring begins to resemble fathering which then mutates into a subtle courtship, and finally a partnership (the collaboration between the two artists). And courtship is not far fetched here, as we shall see below.

Shadow and Sonia do not teach social theory, they chart it out in dance, and practice it through sung metaphor. And as Taussig argues, they show us one critical motion: that any representational act cannot possibly be achieved without the intervention of the mimetic faculty. It also puts the currently dominant, orthodox notions of "copying" in a different light, revealing them as pompous misunderstandings that arise from aspiring monopolists who can never own that which comes distributed to begin with.

Sonia, show me your motion

The quality is not the best, yours ears will hopefully filter out the static after some time, and you may need to increase the volume.

Pulling you this way and that, mimesis plays this trick of dancing between the very same and the very different. An impossible but necessary, indeed and everyday affair, mimesis registers both sameness and difference, of being like, and of being Other. Creating stability from this instability is no small task, yet all identity formation is engaged in this habitually bracing activity in which the issue is not so much staying the same, but maintaining sameness through alterity.
-- Michael Taussig (1993, p. 129)

Brown Girl in the Ring

Alan Lomax, J.D. Elder and Bess Lomax Hawe's There's a Brown Girl in the Ring, featuring an anthology of Eastern Caribbean song games, suggest that ring games are children's precursor to adult courtship. Indeed, the second video, a Jamaican one, shows the "grown up girls," doing altogether different motions, and you can see examples of the Butterfly Dance in that video. Lomax, Elder & Hawe explained that in the ring game the players form a ring by holding hands, then one girl goes into the middle of the ring and dances around to the song, exactly like we see Sonia do at the end of her video. At some point, the girl in the centre is then told "show me your motion", and she does her favourite dance moves as explained above. The authors here note that she may be asked "show me your partner", in which case she picks a friend to join her in the circle. In Sonia's case above, she picked Shadow.

There has been some discussion about the use of the phrase "brown girl." Some think this is an internalization of the colour-coded hierarchy inherited from colonialism. Others argue, that in such a festive, positive, joyful setting, "brown girl" enhances self-esteem. In fact, it helps to form solidarity as well, by exclusion -- no mention of "white girl."

Brown Girl in the Ring

When, at the end of the day, I have no one to turn to and talk it out... I blog it out. I should name this little blog, then I can feel like I am talking to someone. It's something about getting your word quota in for the day...

I'm eating Denny's leftovers for dinner. Who eats Denny's leftovers ever? Surprisingly, the bit of pancakes, hash browns, eggs, and biscuit that was left was good. Thank you Liz the server.
I liked Hancock... I really liked Jason Bateman in Hancock.
I also like random nights like last night.
I don't like not remembering my alarm going off the first few times and eventually pulling myself out of bed and to school only to find that class has been cancelled. Maybe I should skip tomorrow morning as well? hmm

It's 9:32. I'm sitting on my futon listening to my Calypso!(etc.) playlist. I added the "(etc.)" because I added a few Bob Marley songs to it today. So it is no longer just Calypso. Bob made it onto the same playlist as Mighty Sparrow (thank you for the title), Harry Belafonte, and Spice & Company. On Tuesday in Caribbean Cultures we talked about music from the Caribbean; focusing on Calypso, Salsa, and Reggae.

Professor Ty: "Another famous early Calypso song was 'Jean and Dinah'."
Me: "Hey, that's one of my favorites."
Professor Ty (with a surprised look): "Really? You know that one."
Me: "Well, yeah..."
Professor Ty: "So what's it about?"
Me: "Ummm... prostitutes? Yeah?"
Professor Ty: "Yeah, essentially..."

Fourteen years ago I went to visit my uncle Eberhard on the Bahamas together with my then girlfriend Minou. My uncle has lived on Long Island, Bahamas for almost 40 years, working as a electrical engineer. I had never been there and I remember that I was really impressed by the beauty of the island.

When I came back home I wrote a little story about it in the comic book "Artige Zeiten" that I was doing at the time. It´s still available through Reprodukt.

The story reads like this:

"Naturally the hotel also had a hotel band, a calypso band. Music for the mostly elderly audience of the hotel who expect a confirmation of their cliche idea of Caribbean life. What they do get is actually much more: beautiful, simple, mostly self-written songs, performed by lead-singer Leroy Ivan Jackson or "Bodo". His guitar playing and his soulful voice still sound exactly like the 60`s.

Minou and I are in awe. Especially one song catches our attention:"Witchcraft" . He keeps singing the chorus:"Witchcraft" but we can not make out the rest of the lyrics. Later at the hotel bar we ask Bodo about the song. He has had some drinks and to the best of his knowledge, he can not remember this particular song. They have a huge repertoire and also many songs covering that subject. It ("witchcraft") would all be coming from Haiti.

Bodo tells us that he had played in a real calypso big-band in Nassau. And he had even recorded a 45 once. Suddenly I`m wide awake: records! I gotta hear this. He claims that he still has some of them laying around somewhere. After a week of intensive enquiry and investigation and after lying, that we we had to suddenly leave to go home, Bodo finally appears with a stack of records. They look like they had been stored between car tools and machine oil for approximately 14 years. Some are totally bent. The labels have mold on them. Over the years the heat and the humidity and the salt have really left their mark. I buy them all off him and I don`t even know what songs are to be heard on the record. Doesn`t matter. I don`t care. A souvenir couldn`t be more personal for me than that".

I remember my uncle driving us in his jeep on the dirt-roads of Long Island over to Ivan Jackson`s house. On appointment and he wasn`t there. And then meeting him in the hotel bar again when he brought the records. My uncle said:"Now he just made the bargain of his life!" He thought I was completely stupid to buy a bunch of bent and moldy old records.

14 years later I still like these two Ivan Jackson originals a lot and apart from a couple of copies that I gave away to friends I`ve kept them all. But now I also feel kind of bad that I took these records from him, even though he didn`t care for them at the time and even though they are in very poor condition. I tried to find something about Ivan Jackson on the Internet but the only mention was on the myspace-site of the Hip-Hop group RIVAL SLANG from Nassau, Bahamas that featured a MC Marlon Jackson. I contacted his site and it turned out that Marlon Jackson is the son of Ivan Jackson! Now myspace is not that bad is it? His father is still living on Long Island, Bahamas and playing. I`m going to send one copy out to Marlon tomorrow because he does not own one.

And now let yourself be taken to the Caribbean and enjoy the music. The a-side is a slow, soulful ballad that sounds like Ivan Jackson had listened to a lot of Otis Redding. The b-side is a mid-tempo calypso song about life on the islands. Like I wrote 14 years ago: simple and beautiful.

Hey what's up?, My name is Mark Hardy and I'm a 23 year old Entertainment/Music enthusiast and upcoming music business professional. I am from Trinidad and Tobago (For those of who know where that is,wuz d scene? lol). For those of you who don't know, Trinidad and Tobago is a small island in the Caribbean, but despite our size, we have managed to produce some of the most beautiful people in the world and well as some of the most talented people in the world. The multicultural nature of our island is reflected though the many different genres of music which have originated over the years (Calypso, Soca, Chutney, Ragga Soca, Rapso and Steelband ). We have also produced some of the greatest entertainers that the world has seen (or never seen), which brings me to one of my main objectives of this blog. For some strange reason, despite the richness of our culture and the evident generation after generation of talent that this country has produced, we are in the year 2008 and still do not have a properly structured and organised music industry. Fingers have been pointed over the years and somehow everyone in the industry finds someone else to blame. As a result i have comprised a number of theories which may be a helpful step in explaining what happened.... or what didn't happen...!

THE BIG PICTURE

As Trinidadians, we are generally laid back people. While this is one of our most charismatic qualities and one which people from all around the world admire about us, it can be said that this is also one of our greatest downfalls. The stereotype of the Caribbean is one of beautiful beaches filled with "islanders" relaxing in hammocks and sipping on magaritas and "taking in the island breeze". However, us as Trinis have managed to take this stereotype to heart and carry it to a whole other level! lol From our Prime Minister and government officials sleeping in Parliament, straight down to the KFC staff who refuse to serve customers because they are on the phone! we don't take anything seriously! So why would we take our music, entertainers and the entertainment industry on the whole seriously????

FROM SOCA SWITCH TO ASH WEDNESDAY
Firstly i think that the most ridiculous thing about our music industry is that it is once a year. As a result of this, the entire roster of music for the year has to be created, marketed, sold and distributed between the time frame of late September to Ash Wednesday (February/March) the following year. This is because the most popular genres of music are Calypso and Soca, and these are focused on a yearly event in Trinidad called Carnival. For those who don't know :

Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago originally had its roots in West African festivals, facilitated by conservative French aristocracy's carnival celebrations where masks were donned and social visits ensued. When the use of drums and religious practices had been outlawed, the slaves (and then former slaves) found novel ways to pass on their heritage. Carnival then grew with African influences from the slaves who added singing, dancing, and music as well as exuberance to Carnival to transform it into what we see today. Carnival is celebrated two days before Ash Wednesday in the season of Lent. In the earliest times, similar celebrations were held at the end of crops being harvested (hence the Crop Over celebrations in some other Caribbean islands). However, as these became more oppressed, the only permissible time was when the aristocracy was engaged in their own merriment and debauchery - the pre-lenten festival tied to the Roman Catholic idea of carne vale (farewell to the flesh).
(COURTESY WIKIPEDIA)

Ne ways, traditionally calypsoes and now soca speak on topics relating to Carnival, which is one of the reasons that limit these songs to that particular period, between late September and Ash Wednesday; let's call this period the "industry boom". During this period, artists, producers, songwriters, managers, event promoters, magazines and radio stations all "hustle" as much as they can to make a make a quick dollar as this is the only time of the year that the music industry is profitable. The result is that the quality of the product (calypso/soca) decreases year by year as less effort is spent of creativity and more effort is spent on gimmicks and forcing music into the consumer's head. Hey, this sounds pretty similar to the demise of the American music industry! :). The difference is that the population of Trinidad is 1.3 million, so that even if everyone in Trinidad & Tobago buys your CD, you just about make it to platinum status. I think you got the hint that records do not sell in Trinidad & Tobago. Therefore just as in the World music industry, the majority of revenue to be gained is from live performance. During the Carnival season (industry boom), the live events where artists perform are called "fetes". These are usually held on weekends during the "industry boom" period, but coming up to the last 2 - 3 weeks, some of them occur during the week as well. There are a select few artists that perform at these events and the result is that if you go to 3 "fetes" you would have probably seen the same performances over and over. However, alcohol is a staple at these events, so the monotony probably would not matter as I can guarantee you that you would nevertheless have the time of your life each time! The fact that only a select few artists perform at these events, stresses that the "Live" revenue from Carnival is limited to these artists. These select artists also benefit from all radio airplay and all endorsements. The best analogy I can give is that Carnival in Trinidad & Tobago is like a Major Record Label and all the artists who sing soca and calypso are artists signed to that label. The Label only focuses on a select few artists, while all the other artistes are shelved. The main difference in this scenario is that the unfortunate "shelved" artist does not receive an advance and therefore spend his own money on production, marketing and distribution, and in the end makes a loss. However, love for the music and hope to "one day make it", inspires these artists to continue year after year. Arguably the content of most of these "shelved" artists are below standard, however it can be further argued that some of the music that the "successful artists" produce are also below standard. Producers are blamed for this "sub-standard" quality as they are accused for producing any and everything that would make them a quick dollar. There is also a competition at the end of the season called "Soca Monarch", which is a competition for the "successful artists", with one or two lucky "shelved artists" getting a chance to shine. This competition has been criticized on many occasions, since, some of the organizers are artist managers and artists, as well as some of the judges are not qualified (some actually have no music industry experience and are in it for the quick buck as well). The competition in the end separates and disconnects the "industry" instead of bringing it together, as there is often talk of fights and arguments backstage and sometimes even weeks after the event the animosity continues. But, hey! in the end the promoter makes his money, the managers make their money, the few successful artists make their money and the producers make their money; in the end business is business!

In the end Carnival time (or the entire Trinidad music industry) is a free-for-all. Artists and producers do not sign contracts, producers most times don't even know they are entitled to publishing, artists don't register copyright of songs, managers rip off artists who don't know better, concert promoters sometimes don't even pay artists their full amount, the competitions are full of favouritism, the quality of music goes down each year.... and.... best of all.... NOTHING CHANGES!

Welcome to the Mark Hardy Review!

Next time we discuss the Soca Mafia and the Consumer/ Pseudo Patriot!

Então, The Milk Fellas é o caminho!

Here's a sneak peak of Jon Goulder's new chair 'Calypso' which will be officially unveiled at Saturday in Design next month. Jon thinks of Calypso as a hybrid of a traditional chaise lounge and a love seat. It is made from stainless steel and fibre glass, with an upholstered seat and offers five ergonomically correct relaxed seating positions that radiate around its form. Calypso has been developed from prototype with assistance from The Australian Council of the Arts, Maker to Manufacture to Market Grant and Living Edge.

"Back-In-Times" is just another way we Trinbagonians say "Old School Jam".

The name of the band is Shandileer.

The name of the song is "Love Up". I can't find a video for this one, but please go...

...for the audio track.

Its something I found over at Toronto-Lime.com...

Lyrics, again, courtesy of the good folks at Toronto-Lime.com.

I'm not too sure if Ronnie Macintosh (in front with the hat) was with the band when they recorded this song, but I can distinctly hear Carl and Carol Jacobs doing background vocals:

Every day we just eating and we talking
We wondering if we both know what we doing
Darling ah dunno really how you feeling
But ah think is time we should start up this romancing

[Chorus]

Leh we go down de road and sit down by de school and luv up
We go talk bout de day, how it all past away and luv up
We could sing, we could dance and then all ah we dance and luv up
Doo-doo come leh we go, leh we go down de road and luv up
Oh lord, leh we go, leh we go, leh we go, go down de road and luv up

We dont know what we have and what we missing
Leh we work it out baby, we could come out with something
Talking bout life and living it is not de same thing
So baby leh we start to live, forget de horrors and fretting

[Chorus]

[Instrumental Break]

All over de world people carrying on, say dey fighting

MORE ON THE “FLOATING” LNG CALYPSO/ SUEZ GAS PORT
Ever look at the Fort Lauderdale City

MORE ON THE "FLOATING" LNG CALYPSO/ SUEZ GAS PORT

Ever look at the Fort Lauderdale City News?.........www.citynewsfl.com

Usually found in LBTS at the the condos....

2 page spread in their May issue....unfortunately not online as of yet...(the May issue popping up...not the same...do not know why?.....)

pg. 3 shows some new facts....not seen before...

The size...of the ship..."mammoth" ...they report...15 stories high...the size of 3 football fields...

The paper...joins with the Galt....most Fort Lauderdale/ LBTS residents..... and the Futures paper...in their opposition....offering dire ...catastrophic predictions....

The paper.....adds this.....accusing Calypso/ Suez of lying ...on the "economic impact"....bringing an "abundance of natural gas" to South Florida.....

BCbythesea.....this is where this writer strays in previous support of this project.... as previously posted....

Not in fear of a "cloud" of vapor....coming over our coastal towns like something seen in the "Incredible Hulk"....or other comic book movies....

The concern....the change of support.....the fear of not getting the gas delivered as promised....

In previous post...it was reported LNG was "diverted" from the U.S. for a higher profit from other countries....

Now this....

Last May 30, 2008... the New York Times ran a story analyzing the gas market....and found several LNG ports recently built in the U.S. are sitting idle....Droughts in Spain and Australia brought increased demand in those countries....China and India...will pay more for the product...thus further lending credence to the previous report...

That story ...on page 4...reprinted with permission from the N.Y. Times....

online subscribers.......'Global Demand Squeezing Natural Gas Supply'...by Clifford Krauss...www.nytimes.com

BCbythesea....also cause for concern....FPL...no mention of LNG gas port at the Climate Change Summit...plenty of talk of solar/wind.....but no LNG...why?...........

BCbythesea....hears....many LBTS residents are perplexed by the 2 full page ads for the Calypso/Suez LNG Gas Port.... found in the BTSTimes over the last month...

Could it be that those who thought this was the "people's" paper...are stunned that it appears ad revenue won out over their base?....

BCbythesea...hears Comm. Dodd is doing some further research ..... he believes Calypso is not telling us the whole truth...as he stated from the dais....when they appeared before the commission.....

Will BTSTimes...print his findings ...in Commissioner Comments in a future edition?.....pun intended....before or after the full page ads have stopped running?

It's Bender Time.....Fun with mathematics and politics.... www.flsentry.com

more to come.....

Since Cortez changed his shell I’ve had to look a lot closer to tell him from Calypso as you c

Since Cortez changed his shell I've had to look a lot closer to tell him from Calypso as you can see in these cute "twin" images. The image below is the newcomer: Cortez.

Now take a look below at Calypso. This pic as taken just a couple of days before the one of Cortez above.

Calypso is clearly bigger in the pic below---but that won't last long as Cortez grows into his new shell.

Cortez is smaller, though the shell is about the same and he should rapidly grow into it. Calypso's shell has more coralline algae on it and Cortez's shell looks newer, but is actually sort of dinged-up with white rough patches on the back where the outer layer of the shell has been chipped off. Though I've ID'd Cortez and Calypso correctly from looking at their faces, legs and front of shell, once Cortez grows just a bit more I may have to get a look at their back to be certain who I'm looking at. Unless, of course, Cortez or Calypso change shells. This is doubtful for Calypso; he changed into that shell right after I got him when is was tiny and has been in the same shell throughout numerous molts for about a year and a half now.

The pic of Cortez was taken late last night. While he was on the barnacle Calypso was climbing all over Cali on the back top of the Tonga rock. Since she didn't seem to mind him poking her with his feet and feelers, I left them alone. They do interact in ways I don't understand sometimes. So far, both have ignored Cortez, even when he backed into Cali and they remained in close proximity for quite a while.

It's certainly a start, but we've so much more work to do.

Fugly's Achilles' heel is her undying desire to be loved by none- too bright, superficial men with commitment issues.

Somehow, the plan is not working out so well.

Maniston has gone from Brad Pitt to Vince Vaughn to John Mayer.

Spot the trend?

If she was a stock she'd be Enron.

As washed up as she is, she won't truly be truly finished until she winds up with the likes of Kid Rock or at least Tommy Lee.

So I am organizing a letter writing campaign to Kid Rock and Tommy Lee on Jen's behalf.
