I decided to blog today on a new store that is special to me. The Grungy Cupboard-this store is ran

I decided to blog today on a new store that is special to me. The Grungy Cupboard-this store is ran by my Mom, Linda. She has worked hard over the past 6 months or more creating primitive dolls, rag quilt runners, aprons, bonnets & more. I don't think she realized when she started that this is where it would lead-but here she is with a newly designed web site.

The actual cupboard in the graphics was done by Eva from Primlicious (www.primlicious.com) but I took that cupboard and built a web site reflecting what I felt my Mom's likes were all about. She of course had a hand in what felt right or looked right, and what we came up with is what is now The Grungy Cupboard http://www.thegrungycupboard.com .

There you will find "old time" items from yesteryear. The focus is things you might find in your cupboard or what we like to put on our grungy cupboard. Primitive is about "old" things from a more primitive time.

You can purchase dolls at just about any store-but what makes these dolls unique is their "simpler" time look. The aged homespun & calicos, the worn holes, the "grunged" appearance.

So if you have some time-stop on in to www.thegrungycupboard.com and we are sure you will find just the right item you have been looking for.

Although green is my favourite colour, I'm so over bottle green. My living room is small and the darkness of the couch doesn't help. Besides, with 3 cats and 2 dogs, they (there are 2x3 sofas) need all the protection they can get.

The slipcover is getting rather worn, and one of the dogs has nibbled the buttons off the side. I had some gorgeous floral fabric that was just begging to be put to use and on display. My original intention was to make cushions for the top of an old chest, but I might turn it into a coffee table instead.

From the dog-bed making adventures I had some padding, and I can't remember why I bought such a huge length of calico for, so long ago. I had a search on google for quick and easy quilts, and found a great many ideas. The end result is a lovely floral quilt to drape over the couch. Mind you, after a week of sitting on it, I realised why quilts have those..um..quilting lines in them. It's all wrinkled now! Oh well the quilting lines can be put in another day. I thought it wasn't a bad effort considering I can only sew in one stitch and straight lines!

At least it's slowly all coming together!

For Father's Day, we decided to explore our local ghost town and see what we could discover. We may not have found any spirits exactly, but we had a lot of fun exploring Calico Ghost Town.

Nearly 127 years ago, was the richest silver mining district in California. In the early 1900's the price of silver plummeted, leaving Calico a desolate ghost town.

What make Calico interesting was that most of the buildings are original, while the others have been reconstructed as it was many years ago. It has a bustling atmosphere with activities that include exploring old-time shops, sifting for gold, and investigating old mine shafts.

A note about the gun fight shows that they put on for the crowd. The first one that we saw had my sister and I in tears because of how ridiculous the dialog was. However, it was thoroughly entertaining and the children that were there were enthralled by the site of two cowboys interacting with them. Still, we had a fantastic laugh.

Click here to see photos from our ghost town adventure!

We visited our oldest son at his house this morning. It's an older house, that he is fixing up, painting and such. While we were there, he told me about a bunch of kittens that were under his front porch. So, of course, I had to go take a look. There were so cute! 5 black kittens. Momma is a stray and very timid. She also an odd calico color, kind of like a brindle. I did see her but she would not get close enough for a picture. I did manage to get a picture of 4 of the kittens, though. They didn't seem to mind me taking a picture of them. Here they are:

To everyone that came out to see us at Church on Friday, thank you! It was great, and we had a lot of fun. Also, thanks to the other GREAT bands that played, they were all unique and kicked ass in their own unique way. YEAH! The Boston Celtics won the Eastern conference Finals just as we ended one of our songs, so thanks to those guys for not making the crowd depressed. A Boston sports team loss affects mood greater than anything. I should know, I still have nightmares about Aaron Boone.

Update on the CD....we are sending out for manufacturing very soon, and are making available ONE track for download on our new site HTTP://CALICO.GRAVEHAVEN.COM. The catch is that you must come out to a show and get a dropcard from us with your personal password to access it. Think of it as a FREE Gravehaven Gift Card. Along with the Track, you can download the Album artwork and videos from the recording sessions. Remember, IT'S FREE!! Just ask us, and it's yours!

Hope all it well out there in internet land

Written by Courtney Corbett and directed by Emerson Stevens, the Peripitus Theater Company presents Aje Kweller Learns to Participate: CALICO. We are looking forward to a damn good show and you can too. With the always innovate Emerson Stevens, Calico promises to be an amalgam of dark drama and slapstick comedy that romances even the most bitter of hearts.

Peripitus has been producing shows since 2003 in Providence, Chicago, Boston, and is now setting up shop in Western MA. At the North Star in Hadley, MA (135 Russell Street) Calico runs from from May 31-June 2 at 7pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 1pm on Sundays. We love people with passion and we give much respect to the non-profits that recognize "a low budget is no excuse for poor quality". Peripitus describes themselves as "fiercely independent" and "honest, raw and thought provoking". For more info check out the site here and feel free to purchase tickets online.

We got back late late last night...the plane was delayed, so it was about 2 am Denver time before we got home, meaning it felt like 4 am to us. It was nice to be home even though I was exhausted. I peeked at the sleeping boys, who had all made us "welcome home" cards, and petted the cats. We saw precious few creatures while we were in NY--some birds, one black squirrel, a few dogs. Lots of babies, though.

This pattern was inspired by some of the tiny calico prints that were featured in the Cooper's sample exhibit. There were beautiful little Japanese prints done for kimono fabric. I believe they were produced using indigo dye and a rice paste resist. The actual prints were much smaller than what I've done here, but if they get too small on the computer screen they disappear.

Another thing I learned from the sample show is that calico fabric originated in India. The informational blurb at the museum said the fabric was from Calcutta, but I've since discovered that it's from the city of Calicut. (Oops, Cooper-Hewitt). Indian pattern designers typically used motifs from nature, of trees, flowers, birds, etc. Then the Europeans started making calico fabric with motifs based on the traditional Indian motifs. I've always associated calico fabric with Little House on the Prairie, so I did a little research to find out how it got to America. Here's a brief synopsis:

In 1700, England banned import (and the use and wear) of cotton cloth from India, in an effort to prop up the English textile industry (known as the 'Calico Act', it was repealed in 1774). Printed calicos were especially popular among women who were termed the 'Calico Madams'. The ban almost destroyed the Indian textile industry, and India was forced to buy from the British textiles. (thanks Wikipedia)

A fellow named John Hewson, the son of a London woolen draper, came to America in 1774 with Benjamin Franklin to escape King George's rule. Hewson was trained as a printer of calico fabrics and had worked for Talwin & Foster, a leading London textile printworks. He opened a calico printing factory in 1774 in Pennsylvania. According to the Pennsylvania Historical Society website,

Not only was Hewson the first calico fabric printer in the colonies, his work was also of the highest quality. According to scholars of textile history, Hewson’s textiles were unmatched in America at that time, and rivaled those of Europe. His chintz fabrics made him famous and were printed with wood blocks; a different one was used for each of the seven colors in his palette; pink, red, blue, yellow, black and brown. Green colors were added by “pencilling” in blue and yellow dyes. Hewson’s textiles were expensive and highly sought after for dresses, furnishing fabrics and handkerchiefs. He is most known for his realistic and finely detailed classical urns of flowers, which were printed as medallion panels for bedcovers, it is believed.

There you have it...the history of calico, in a nutshell.

Joer!
