La noticia-reportaje es del periódico El Mundo. Es un interesante y breve artículo sobre actividades mercenarias de estadounidenses en Kenia. A mí, lo que me llama la atención, sin embargo, es el hecho de que el segundo de los dos únicos coches de la isla, es del Hospital de Burros, creado por una ONG británica para socorrer a los asnos con problemas de salud,

Supongo que los de la ONG prefirieron ocuparse de los suyos, antes que de las personas. Me encantaría saber cómo se llama esa oenegé. Y quien la financia. Me encantaría saber a quién votan y qué opinan sobre muchos otros temas, los directivos de esa ONG...

Muchas veces (no todas, no siempre) las ideas, los partidos, se definen por quienes les dan soporte (los sostienen). No sé si a mí me gustaría compartir ideario o, en su caso, que me votaran estos... ¡BURROS!

A pesquisa afirma que mesmo se fosse a Gisele Bündchen ou até mesmo a Juliana Paes na cama vocês pensariam assim. Ao contrário de nós mulheres, que se acordássemos ao lado de Brad Pitt ou do Marcos Pasquim já ficaríamos excitadíssimas. É, mais uma vez, uma pesquisa mostra que as mulheres são estão a frente dos homens. É… ponto pras mulheres.

Sin embargo, para los efectivos de la Policía Federal Preventiva que resguardan las bandas de la 8 a la 10 en la zona denominada como de alto riesgo, han aprendido a vislumbrar estos intentos del narcotráfico, por la simple razón de que generalmente se trata de viajes cortos, de personas de origen latino, que transportan cantidades de ropa inusuales, casi siempre sacos y pantalones.

Este el caso del aseguramiento que los federales realizaron en el Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de México, un sujeto que fue identificado como José Ignacio Galindo Salinas, quien llegó con una maleta en la que traía 79 prendas de vestir, todas ellas almidonadas con seudoefedrina, un reactivo utilizado para la elaboración de anfetaminas o cocaína.

Este individuo que hace las veces de "burro", y que generalmente reciben una paga de no más de 10 mil  por el transporte de la droga , llegó procedente de  Buenos Aires, Argentina, donde le fue entregada la maleta que contenía 33 pantalones y 46 camisas.

El problema fue que la ropa aún venía húmeda, era un número poco usual para un viaje de esta índole, por lo que al revisar la maleta, los policías sospecharon de la existencia de la seudoefedrina, lo que se pudo constatar una vez en las oficinas de la corporación en la misma terminal aérea.

De acuerdo con informes de la Procuraduría General de la República, la maleta pertenecía al pasajero que fue identificado con el nombre José Ignacio Galindo Salinas, quien tenía como destino final la ciudad de Guadalajara, Jalisco.

Este método para tráfico de estupefacientes de reactiva a sólo dos días después de que en alta mar la Armada de México interceptó un minisubmarino con casi seis toneladas de cocaína.

Most summers I do a final longish run about 10 days before the Triple Crown pack-burro races begin. It's no big deal like some of the runs up to 4.5 hours that I've done in weeks past. It's just one last test of over two hours. It allows me to check out my burro, my gear, my own health and fitness. I decided to jog Laredo up Hermit Pass in the Sangre de Cristo Range just to get in a short, but steep and rocky climb. Now 10 days of recovery before Fairplay, July 27, 29 miles; Leadville, Aug. 3, 22 miles; and Buena Vista, Aug. 10, 12 miles. That's a lot of racing miles in three consecutive weekends. I always feel a sense of relief when this training run is over. There's nothing to do now but show up. This year I packed a digital camera along and so you get a brief 8-second glimpse of what it's like. Eight seconds is how long a bull rider rides. Of course a pack-burro race is much longer.

 The point of this post is a passionate attempt to bring awareness to the plight of America's wild mustangs and burros. At the moment, 30,000 plus wild mustangs in Bureau of Land Management (BLM) holding facilities are facing euthanasia. As if taking their freedom and stealing their lands isn't enough, now their very lives hang in the balance.

It seems so simple: stop rounding up our wild horses. Set the wild horses free. Stop using our tax dollars to strip away the freedom and dignity of OUR wild horses, some of which end up at slaughterhouses suffering a horrific end. 

Most importantly, reinstate full protection for OUR wild horses and burros under The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971.

How many times must we fight this same battle? 

And that's where we come in, as individuals. Our voices count, and we are all the wild mustangs have to count upon. They need you to use your voice to do what's right for the horses, when our own government can't or won't.

It's this uncharted geography of the mind that sometimes proves most challenging.

It's sobering that I've run in this race 27 times. I've finished last. I've finished second probably more times than any other person in the race's history. I've finished in the ambulance. And I've finished first a few times, too.

After all this, I must admit that the more I know about burros and pack-burro racing, the less I know. It's all still a mystery to me how to pull together proper training, rest and nutrition for man and beast. Sure, I have a few ideas, but the course is always there to prove me either right or wrong.

One thing I do know for sure, this particular 29 miles will seek out and find any physical or mental weakness that you or your animal have on that particular day. And if you are human and your burro is a burro, that means this course will bring something to the surface every time you run it. The difference between success and failure is what you do once that happens.

"Grass" is a movie I recommend for anyone interested in pasture-based agriculture, donkeys, or for the misguided who might think war in Iran is a good idea. The movie was made in 1925 by explorer Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, and chronicles the annual 48-day migration of the 50,000-member Bakhtiari tribe of Persia (which is now Iran) — and their 500,000 animals — through deserts, icy glacial rivers and a snow-covered 12,000-foot mountain pass that is scaled barefoot because cotton shoes don’t work very well in the snow.

The migration makes the Fairplay Pack-Burro Race look like a half-mile stroll on the beach, and the Democratic National Convention look like a board meeting at the Denver Post. When the grass runs out for their animals, the tribespeople simply fold their tents, round up their animals and trek hundreds of miles in search for greener pastures. There is no 16-week Runner’s World training program or special diet. They don’t even give up smoking, though one wonders what exactly is in those pipes, especially given the film’s title.

This silent black-and-white story is told without any of the special effects of today’s movies, and is narrated only by titleboards between scenes. Horses, mules, cattle, goats, sheep and donkeys — thousands of donkeys — are driven over some of the most rugged terrain on Earth. Among films prominently featuring donkeys, it rivals "Treasure of the Sierra Madre." On their backs are the tribes-people’s belongings, including some live cargo such as chickens, dogs, young goats and even children in cradles. It is an amazing documentary and one of the most incredible films I have ever seen.

Pedro lived on the family farm of one of my co-workers. Ever since we've worked together, I've been aware of Pedro's existence, his pastoral life among a flock of goats, and his occasional odd behavior--like the time he went missing, and we feared the worst. Pedro was lucky that time; he wasn't really missing, he was just out of sight in the back pasture.

So, Pedro has always lived among a flock of goats. He's bigger than they are, but not by much. Pedro and his goats spend (spent!) days grazing in a field in Marion. Pretty good life for a miniature donkey and some goats. Goats tend to multiply, however, and eventually some had to be sold off (how many goats does one farm need?).

Unfortunately, Pedro had developed special friends among the goats. When the flock was thinned out by a sale several years ago, Pedro's goat friends left the farm for other pastures. Pedro moped at their loss, if you can imagine such a thing, and went into a general depression. A burro with a furrowed brow, if you will.

My co-worker tells me that for weeks, "Pedro was a real-life Eeyore. He was completely depressed and moping around without his goat friends."

Eventually, Pedro's depression lifted and he was able to enjoy life in the pasture again. Over time, however, the ranks of the goat herd began to build up, and once more, Pedro developed a noticeable fondness for one particular goat. Picture it: an elderly burro and a young goat, hanging out by the fence, nibbling new spring grass, maybe kicking up their heels together.

Enter the goat-buyer. The family had a surplus of goats; a local entrepreneur wanted new, unpetted stock for his petting zoo; a deal was struck. Nine goats were chosen from the herd...including Pedro's goat. The family had misgivings: was it right to sell Pedro's friend and render a little-old-burro goatless once more?

The decision was made, however, and the bargain struck. Half the herd, including Pedro's friend, went away with the goat man to join his petting zoo. They'll be living a pretty cushy life with plenty to eat, including any snacks they can nab from unsuspecting toddlers. (Don't ever give a kid an ice cream cone at a petting zoo--it's too much temptation for your average goat!)

Yesterday, Pedro was discovered dead in the pasture, having apparently expired from his goat-loss grief. His exodus may have been hastened by his age and the heat, of course, but the family is pretty sure he just couldn't face the recent loss of another goat-friend. Under most circumstances, the family would receive visitors who wanted to pay their respects to the deceased, but in this case, Pedro's friends are mostly behind bars, and efforts to liberate them have "stalled." (Puns definitely intended, I'm sorry to say.)

I've seen bored burros draped in shoddy serapes and sombreros, waiting to be photographed with tequila-laden tourists in Tiajuana. I've seen stubborn little beasts of burden toting huge loads (or sometimes, a huge backside) up dusty streets in quaint towns. I've even witnessed an alarming display of rolling eyes and stretching neck and snapping yellow teeth as someone tried to force a donkey to do something against its better judgement. This is the first time, though, that I've heard of a donkey that grieved itself into the grave. Rest in peace, Pedro, and maybe you'll make new friends complete with hooves, horns and halos.

The Televisa network on Wednesday showed Blacky gobbling food from a bucket after spending three days in a jail that normally holds people for public drunkenness and other disturbances.

Blacky was jailed for biting and kicking two men near a ranch outside Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of the southern state of Chiapas.

Officials freed the donkey after its owner paid a fine of $36 and the $115 hospital bill of the men, who suffered bites to the chest and a broken ankle. Authorities say he also must pay $480 to each man for missed work days.

The victims said the donkey bit Genaro Vazquez, 63, in the chest on Sunday and then kicked 52-year-old Andres Hernandez as he tried to come to the rescue, fracturing his ankle.

"All of a sudden, the animal was on top of us like it was rabid," Hernandez said.

Police said it took a half-dozen men to control the enraged beast.

Chiapas police have thrown animals in the slammer before, including a bull that devoured corn crops and destroyed two wooden vending stands in March.

In 2006, a dog was locked up for 12 days after biting someone. His owners were fined $18.

É incrível o poder que os caras de Brasília têm de deixar as pessoas indignadas.É incrível, e nunca vai entrar na minha cabeça. O alarde em relação aos malditos gastos com cartões corporativos foi enorme, com o vazamento do dossiê então, nem me fale. E tudo isso pra quê? Pra em uma sessão sem quórum a presidente (com minúsculo, me desculpe senhora) encerrar a a sessão, dizer que se não fossem os jornalistas a CPI não tinha durado tanto, e ainda o relator dizer que não há mais o que investigar.

Bom, eu quero ver o relatório da CPI. Provavelmente dirão que não chegaram a conclusão nenhuma e ponto final na história.

Deveria haver um meio do povo decidir quando haveria CPI ou não. Um monte delas tramitam, gastando dinheiro público, ocupando burramente os parlamentares e enchendo a paciência do povo, sem mencionar as lingüiças que são enchidas a cada Comissão instaurada.

Não quero pizza, odeio pizza, gosto mesmo é de feijoada, daquelas com bastante sabor e que te deixam com indigestão por dias a fio.

Que calamidade, senhores congressistas! Vou anotar o nome de cada um que participou desta Comissão, e vocês nunca terão meu voto.

También derogó las Resoluciones 347 y 449 de la Junta del Acuerdo de Cartagena, y 434 de la Secretaría General, en lo concerniente a los requisitos sanitarios para el comercio intrasubregional y con terceros países de equinos y sus productos.

Los Países Miembros dispondrán de un plazo de noventa (90) días calendario, contados a partir de la publicación de la Resolución en la Gaceta Oficial del Acuerdo de Cartagena, para adoptar las medidas que sean necesarias para asegurar su aplicación cuya entrada en vigencia se producirá una vez concluido el plazo de 90 días.

Finally we hit the Oatman cutoff road and thought about getting on the throttle, but every biker was waving at us to slow down...it didn't take long to figure out why.   About every 2 miles there were Arizona State Police with radar guns checking that anyone going over the state-mandated 45 MPH speed limit would get pulled over.   It's not so boring doing 45 MPH, but the beefed up presence of State Police puts a bit of a rain cloud on any ride.   Then there were the sobriety checkpoints.  In previous years they had checkpoints on the way out of Oatman when heading toward Laughlin.  This year they blocked both lanes and checked everyone going in and out.  Harsh!  I guess in the "old" days (circa: 1995) Oatman was a rip-roar'n party town.  People doing burnouts, drinking in the streets as well as partially clothed passengers showing off, but then a person was killed and the reactionary town fathers took control.  Now 13+ years later it's all about vendor booths, drug sniffing dogs and hot dog stands hawking t-shirts to get as much of the suburban biker wannabes wallet share as possible. 

Oatman is a fun town even with out burnouts and if flashbacks to the old mining days are your thing, you'll be able to get your fill. Sunburned riders lounge around enjoying the atmosphere and weather.  And at a minimum you can score one of those antique style photos of yourself holding a rusty rifle and dressed like a barkeep. There's even a free petting zoo in the middle of the road.  Burros walk aimlessly along the main street acting somewhat annoyed at all the attention.  They are protected by the Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act 1977 (pdf), but the Oatman Burros have no fear of people or bikes.  And if the Burros don't draw you to the town there is the Oatman Hotel.  Built in 1902 it's the oldest 2-story adobe structure in the Mohave and is a famous landmark for the honeymoon stop of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard who stayed there after getting married in Kingman.

Speaking of Kingman, we were looking for more distractions than what Oatman had to offer and headed out on what's called "The Gold Road" which is one of the oldest and most historic sections of Route 66 over Sitgreaves Pass.  We stop at Cool Springs Camp for a soda and honey bucket visit.  This camp was a pile of rubble for many years, marking where a store and gas station once stood.  It burned to the ground in 1966 and the owners from Chicago have been rebuilding it for years.  We chatted with the care taker on the property who told us the Chicago owners were putting it up for sale (although no signs indicated it was).  It's worth a stop for the almost frozen soda and to look over the mini-museum of autographed album covers.

We followed Route 66 down into the desert which eventually meets I-40.  We took the interstate, but you can pass underneath, and follow the signs to the north and east, to stay on Route 66. This will take you up the old Santa Fe railroad gorge into Kingman.  We arrived at Kingman and stopped at a bright pink-and-turquoise building. This is Mr D'z, one of the few remaining, original (okay, renovated) Route 66 diners. They've even had an Oprah sighting!  We were hungry and stopped in for a famous hot dog and a mug of their home-brewed root beer to wash away the dust of the trip.  After lunch we followed Highway 93 out of Kingman, up and through Coyote Pass. This is a wide, four-lane highway, as it is part of the main route to Las Vegas and took us back in to Laughlin.

We spent the evening talking how we soaked up some incredible scenery and walked through the numerous vendor booths.  We caught some of Chris Hiatt's tribute of Stevie Ray Vaughan at The Edgewater.  He even had the signature black flat-brimmed hat that made Vaughan so famous.

Muchos tienen esa idea loca de que el ser una sola entidad porque sólo a alquien se le ocurre fomenta la paz, desde pequeño en el colegio me decian que hay que usar la misma camiseta, pero yo jamas usare una camiseta que no beneficia a todos, eso de ponerte la misma camiseta o formentar la loca idea de la pura institucionalidad sin un fondo serio y de igualdad social es mejor quitarse esa camiseta burocratica y usar trapos cocidos a manera de polo...

Creo, y eso lo vemos en todos sitios... que es falso el fomentar ser uno por el hecho de serlo solamente, el ser uno tautoligicamente hablando es dañino... y hoy argumentaré el porqué y explicar el titulo Uno vs. Unidad.

Hace unos años atraz los paises se estan multiplicando, paralelo a la Union Europea, Mercosur, Comunidad Andina... sucede lo contrario... Ex Union Sovietica, Serbia, Montenegro, Armenia, Kosovo, Cataluña, Vasco, Ucrania, Bielorrusia, Estonia, Dos Alemanias... etc...

Antes existian los grandes imperios de Carlo Magno... la gran Colombia, Union sovietica, Tahuantinsuyo, Virreynatos, etc... hoy sólo existen pocos imperios... casi ninguno...

EL problema esta en la burocracia... Bolivia, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, y otros paises de Latinoamerica hay provincias que hace rato desean la autonomia, otras ser otros paises, debido a la falta de beneficios, de mejorias de vida... en Europa hay un pedacito de personas que son el 5% de la poblacion mundial que tiene mas dinero que el resto de la poblacion (95%)...

Que es el Peru, que es Europa, que es Latinoamerica??? es justo que las entradas de los sitios turisticos de Chiclayo, de Piura... ese dinero recaudado vaya a la Capital, a Lima, y despues ellos envian las sobras... es justo que Lima exporte de otras naciones comida... y las provincias son las que mas importen y no vivan bien?....

New York y muchos otros pueblos ya agotaron sus materias primas... y solo les queda exportar, hay algunas ciudades de Europa y Norteamerica que consumen mas de lo que consumen la poblacion Peruana... y esto no se trata de dinero solamente....

EL quechua, que se habla en todo America del Sur, en ecuador, brazil, argentina, colombia, chile, peru, venezuela, etc... suman más de 20 millones de personas que lo hablan... es justo que no exista ningun bendito periodico en quechua ni tv ni radio en quechua... el quechua es mas hablado que el catalan...

Explico señores y señoritas por ahora... un niño quechua hablante de provincia va a estudiar al colegio... no le enseñan nada de quechua, sino español (otro idioma)... y despues lleva todos los dias una hora de ingles... en el colegio conoce dos nuevos idioma, y siendo quechuahablante, ya no le importa escribir en quechua ni menos la cultura porque si pierdes el idioma pierdes la cutura...

Y esto no solo sucede en Peru sino en varios sitios, si algo mata tu cultura, tu identidad es mejor fomentar otra nacion que si lo haga, asi pensaron muchos nuevos estados...

Cada vez que hay mas consumismo, desigualad social, y harta burocracia en estos otros cien años mas... habran minimo unos 30 estados mas....

No hay que ser uno tautologicamente hablando, sino buscar la unidad de pueblo, no ver el Estado en grupos sino como un equipo, el ser uno a veces trae varios problemas por no fomentar la unidad... somos americanos, algunos asiaticos, otros europeos o africanos... pero todos somos humanos, y todos tenemos derecho a vivir mejor, y si tu Estado no lo puede lograr debido a la falta de organizacion, la mejor via pacifica es la autonomia geografica...

I made some corn cakes, known in olden times as "johnny cakes," which are basically just corn pancakes. Instead of syrup (I am recovering from oral surgery and anything too sweet=pain) I grabbed the two avocados that have been nicely ripening atop the fridge all week and made my standard guacamole as a topping for the cakes. The two went together like burros and embroidered saddlebags. Armoniosamente.

As mentioned below, you could also skip the guacamole and serve the cakes with honey instead.

Here is the recipe:

Corn Cakes

½ c. yellow cornmeal
½ c. semolina flour
1 tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. salt
1 tbp. sugar
½ tsp. ground cinnamon
¼ tsp. chili powder
1 c. soymilk (or milk)
1 egg
1/8 c. canola oil, plus more for cooking

Warm a griddle or heavy pan over medium heat. Combine all dry ingredients in a medium bowl. Add the remaining ingredients, whisk to combine, and set aside while you oil the griddle.

Use a small measuring cup to drop batter onto heated griddle in 4-5” circles. Cook until golden and crisp (2-4 minutes), then flip and cook other side. Oil griddle between batches and turn down heat as necessary.

Makes about 15 cakes

Anita's Guacamole

Good guacamole is like good jazz, you just use the measurements in a recipe as a loose frame for your own style. This one is pretty mellow, but you may like to spike it with some jalepeno, or prefer to sweeten it up with a teaspoon of honey. Others may choose to add less cilantro, or more tomato...you know what you like, so go with it ;)

To speed preparation, prepare the guacamole while you mind the griddle/in-between flipping corn cakes.

2 ripe avocados
2 scallions, finely chopped
½ tomato, diced
1 handful cilantro, rinsed and chopped
juice of 2 limes
1 tbp. vinegar
1 tbp. olive oil
¼ tsp. chili powder
¼ tsp. ground cumin
salt and pepper to taste

Half the avocados, remove the pits, and scoop meat into a medium-sized bowl. Add the remaining ingredients and mash together with a fork. Season to taste and serve alongside corn cakes.

As an accompaniment, I halved a potato legthwise, steamed it, and sprinkled each half with Old Bay seasoning. We ate the whole meal with our hands, scooping up big dollops of guacamole with the cakes and the potato halves. Without my mouth malady, it might have been nice to save the last cake to drizzle with honey instead.
