Hispanic Leaders Demand Spanish Pledge of Allegiance

-Laredo, Texas (AIP)

The Hispanic-American Association of America (HAAA), America's largest Hispanic lobby group, announced Thursday that it will make a push to ensure that the Pledge of Allegiance is mandatorily spoken only in Spanish by all public school students in the United States.

"It is time that America realizes and embraces its Latino heritage," said HAAA Vice President Vicente Hidalgo, who has already spoken with numerous members of Congress, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican leader John Boehner. "We want all students, regardless of ethnic background, to say the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish so that they are reminded that this country was once a part of Mexico before the Americans stole it."

According to Hidalgo, first on the HAAA's agenda is the renaming the Pledge of Allegiance to "La Promesa de la Lealtad a Mexico".

This demand is seen as a part of the broader move towards Hispanicization in the United States, a movement that has even seen a number of public schools in the Southwest conduct classes only in Spanish in a move to appease Hispanic-majority neighborhoods. And while many Hispanics are looking forward to saying the Pledge of Allegiance in their native language, others remain apprehensive.

"That ain't right," says Laredo resident Joe McGrogan, one of the city's few Caucasian residents. "My kid ain’t gonna say no Pledge of Allegiance in Mexican. My kid speaks American, only American, you understand?”

When asked what other legislation his organization plans on effecting, Hidalgo said that the HAAA "[hopes] to make tacos and burritos the only lunch options available in public schools."

An amusement park debuted its newest roller coaster ride yesterday, and claimed that it was guaranteed to "scare the shit out of you."

The ride, dubbed the "Shitstreak," became operational yesterday at Point Cedar amusement park 10 miles south of Sandusky, Ohio. Those who rode on it agreed that the marketing hype is justified.

"I soiled myself after only three minutes," said 31-year-old Kevin Mayberry of Detroit, Michigan. "At first I was embarrassed, but then I realized that everyone else was shitting their pants, too, so I was okay with it after that."

In fact, those who are able to endure the ride without excreting feces will get their park admission money back, according to Point Cedar park manager Will Randall.

[caption id="attachment_348" align="alignright" width="380" caption="Shitstreak riders who raise their arms above their head are three times more likely to defecate than those who do not."][/caption]

"Our philosophy behind this roller coaster ride is that if you don't shit your pants, you haven't experienced the thrill intended by its designers," Randall explained. "So it's only fair that you get your money back."

The Shitstreak is specially-designed to induce bowel movements in its riders. The coaster alternates between bumpy and smooth travel, and has a large number of precipitous drops followed by tightly-executed turns.

"Each drop followed by a tight turn is the real secret to this ride," said Susan Daniels, one of the Shitstreak's designers. "The drops make you feel like you will slam into the pavement below, and that encourages you to have bowel movements in response. The tight turn that follows is the 'squeeze' that ensures it will happen. We call it the 'Cheez Whiz' effect because the feces jettisons out just like processed cheese spraying out of a pressurized can."

The bumpiness of the ride is for laughs, Randall said.

"By the time you get to the bumps, everyone has already shit their pants and there's poop everywhere," he said. "Clothing is no barrier because of the forces involved. It's funny as hell to watch people bounce up and down on their own shit. It sounds like two dozen children all slapping piles of mud repeatedly."

Passengers covered from head to toe in one another's feces exited the roller coaster ride with nothing but praise for the Shitstreak.

"I thought it would be gross, but I went on the ride because someone dared me to," said a poop-covered, 14-year-old Tommy Everly of Boston, Massachusetts. "But now I have to go again. I didn't know a group poop could be so much fun."

No Shitstreak rider had a clean finish on the first day, Randall reported.

"It helps that we give free burritos and enchiladas to those waiting in line to ride the Shitstreak," he explained. "We partner with Taco Bell."

Gladys Lovejoy, a 62-year-old woman who went on the ride with her 65-year-old husband Glen, said that although the ride was messy it was good for her spouse's health.

"Glen is constipated a lot," she said. "This cleared him out completely."

[Author's note: This is probably the worst piece of satire I have ever written, and I've written a lot of bad satire. I believe I have even offended myself. I hope you didn't read this while chewing on a piece of fudge or eating a bowl of chocolate pudding. I also hope this story does not soil my reputation. -- Sir Satire]

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Long and I have declared this trip, not horrible, but not the most fun either. I think it had a lot to do with limited options in food and the fact that there was nothing to do except go shopping and to the beach. Sorry San Luis Obispo, you're on my X list.

Breakfast:

Continental breakfast with Best Western. Bagel, butter, cream cheese, 1/2 of the hard boiled egg and 1/4 cup of the apple juice. Along with their coffee.

I needed something a little more potent, so we headed on over to Peets.

A banana at Pismo Beach

Finally some good food at a Mexican restaurant. I can't remember the name (as usual), but I know that their food was decent. Below is a picture of the condiments. I also used lots of Tapatio hot sauce. There was no lime.....

I had 1/2 of this burrito. It had guacamole, rice, beans, lettuce, cheese, sour cream, onions.

This has got to be the most dressed up cheese quesadilla I've ever had. Bell peppers, jack cheese, tomatoes, sour cream (on the side). Really good.

Salt Water Taffy Candy. Lemon, peanut butter (ack!), watermelon, vanilla, orange...and a few more that were really good.

We went for a treat, Long went for gelato. I went for coffee and a pastry (below). So YummMY! It looks like a palmier cookie, but it's actually a puff pastry with almond, and cinnamon!

Dinner:

Solo Pizza. I had a Mr. Pibb. For some reason I've been wanting a soda. I've been fighting the urge for a week or so, but when it came to having pizza...being away from home...I caved.

my pizza was Sun dried tomato, olive oil, avocado, cheese, and tomatoes. SO GOOD! A little oily, but still really good.

I had the artichokes off of Long's pizza (artichoke, cheese, pesto topping)

Yes, I have been on a quick and easy kick lately. And you could use this filling on nachos, quesadil

Yes, I have been on a quick and easy kick lately. And you could use this filling on nachos, quesadillas, enchiladas, or even over rice. I used the Morningstar Farms Spicy Black Bean burgers because they were left over from our cook out last weekend. They are not vegan, but you could substitute another vegan burger and add some black beans and corn if you wanted to.

This is the week of hiding veggies for me, so if you don't need to hide yours by all means use larger pieces of vegetables. All you'll have to do is cook it longer.

Vegetaran Black Bean Burger Veggie Burrito Filling - serves 4

2 Spicy Black Bean patties

1 tomato minced

1 zucchini minced

1 small eggplant minced

1 handful mushrooms minced

1 handful collards minced

1 green pepper minced

1/2 onion minced

big handful fresh cilantro minded

4 Tortillas preferably whole grain

In a non-stick pan cook onion until it's translucent. Since everything is minced you'll need to keep a closer eye on it and stir more often. Add green pepper, mushrooms, tomato, eggplant, collards, zucchini and cook until all veggies are softened. You may need to add a couple of Tbl. water and cover your pan if it's taking longer than you want it to.

In a separate non-stick pan cook burgers and chop into crumbles with your spatula in the pan as it cooks. Add cooked burger crumbles and cilantro to the veggie mixture.

Most store bought tortillas will tear if you try to fold them unless they are warmed. You could warm them in the oven or microwave if you like. I usually warm theme by putting them one by one on top of the pan I have my heated filling in.

Fill the warmed tortillas with the mixture and fold into a burrito shape. Put the filling in the center and fold the tortilla in half. Next fold about an inch of both ends towards the middle, then roll it in half again.

After they are filled, I like to put them on a cookie sheet and bake them. They become a little liked their fried cousins the chimichanga.

Sometimes girl forgets her chicken breast, fruit, and V8 for her lunch and is forced to buy "meal" from a machine of vending sorts. Burrito is bland with mystery cheese, and Coke Zero is as usual the best little yummy beverage. I was lucky enough to obtain some yummy Salsitas from a co-worker who claimed they were too spicey (HA! WUSS!). Is it weird I was embarassed to put money into that machine? I've never bought anything from it ever! I wanted to get my stupid little burrito and walk invisibly back to my office. Oh well, mission completed.... stomach upset.

Bring your gelato spoons and breezy summer tunes. If June, July and August was a Big Fat Burrito, we’re finally in the middle where all the juicy meat lies. Savour it!

Two songs that I think capture the essence of this delicious month:
July, July! – The Decemberists
the chickens how they rattle chicken chains
Quite literally the epitome of July. Twice. And thrice when actually singing the chorus. The upbeat, adventurous and sunny guitar sounds embrace this month’s lovely discoveries in a well-told tale.

Parentheses – The Blow
whatever weird way my mind goes, I know I’ll be safe in these arms.
Starts out like you’re on the beach in Jamaica, sippin’ that Pina Colada under an umbrella. Whether you’re single or attached, this song is extremely cute. I always have the urge to give the next person I see a tight squeeze.

In June, I was fortunate to catch the Toronto Short Film Festival and those of you who love artfully crafted music videos should YouTube most of the ones shown at the Scene Not Heard: Music Video screening. I especially recommend Challengers, Dr. Love, Temporarily in Love, A-Punk, and Pigs.
And if checking music videos out is not your thing – go make one! My friend, Alex Gao from Ann Arbor, Michigan took his camcorder to his backyard and in a couple hours, came up with this to the song 'I Must Be High' - Wilco.

Oooh! People in Toronto this month who love to sit back and enjoy the stage, you might spot the infamous E. Sempé in a bright yellow tee volunteering at the The FRINGE – Toronto’s Theatre Festival.

I got a big burrito waiting for me in the other room.

I'm going to eat that burrito in just a few minutes.

It's a big Fourth of July burrito.

I pay my taxes, vote, work hard, know my American history well, and try to be helpful to others.

And if I say, or if you say, that a burrito screams Independence Day, that's just what it does.

I don't care about any flag pins, or about any hot dogs and hamburgers or any of that.

Nope. I've got a big Fourth of July burrito to eat---one day early---and that is plenty American enough for me.

Apesar de falarem “comida mexicana”, me parece que o foco mesmo é burrito. Pelo menos é o que ocupa maior parte do cardápio. Fica meio repetitivo falar desses fast-foods pq tudo é meio igual. Variam alguns pratos, o ambiente e a localização. Vc chega, paga, pede, leva pra mesa.

Who can resist their favorite burrito combination all rolled into one (or sometimes 2-3 if you add

Who can resist their favorite burrito combination all rolled into one (or sometimes 2-3 if you add enough stuff) expertly wrapped tortilla(s) at Chipotle. Even with it's great Earth/animal-friendly company philosophy, my self-proclaimed "hippie-hater" friends go there at least twice a week. So, it would seem, there's a bit of something there for all of us.

I know they focus on urban centers, but it's time to focus more on the college market, I think. As the biggest followers of the Americanized-burrito revolution, we must be their biggest market. And, while a lot of us live in these "urban centers" aka cities, many of us have foolishly chosen to attend school in more rural areas.

Don't get me wrong, I love all of our "Mom & Pop" restaurants and shops. The town charm was part of the reason I decided to move out of the city for college. The fact of the matter is that more and more chains are moving into town and Chipotle is not one of them. I will still love the small shops just as much (if not more) than the chains, but I really do miss having Chipotle around the corner.

Top Ten Reasons All College Towns (Even in More Rural Areas) Need Chipotle:

1) It’s great drunk food.

2) It’s even better hungover food.

3) We like drinking margaritas and beer.

4) With our infamous poor nutritional habits, we need a quick way to get all the food groups into one bite.

5) We all get Chipotle gift cards during the holidays and then immediately return to school without Chipotles… (unless you go to school in an urban center).

6) “Food with Integrity.” At this point in our lives, we still think we can change the world… one burrito at a time.

7) At least one of our friends is going through a vegetarian stage and needs a good place to eat.

8) It doesn’t require utensils… unless you want it to.

9) Their extensive free bar comes complete with lemons and limes in addition to the napkins and cutlery we need for our apartments/dorms/boxes/other living arrangements.

10) We live there roughly 75% of our college years. At 78.14 average years of life, that’s between 4-6% of our entire lives depending on which graduation plan you’re on.

I've already written them a letter and received a rather unencouraging response, but they just need to hear it from more people. I know there's a whopping 10 people who have ever read my blog, but write them a comment on their website. It can only help.

Famous Taco occupies the space between fast-food burrito joints like El Oasis or Taco Bell, and sit down restaurants like El Azteco, Chevy's or Chi Chi's. It's the typical northern rendition of Mexican food that features plenty of unseasoned meat, cheese, and lettuce. If you want spice, you can dip into the salsa on the side or have a bite of Spanish rice. Famous Taco is nothing spectacular, but if you want a quick, sit-down Mexican meal, it's a good place to start. Sort of like the Denny's of Mexican food. $10 for a larger than average burrito with beans and rice.

June 25th, 2008
3:24 PM
Viva La Vida by Coldplay

I figure that I'm already wasting my summer away by doing absolutely nothing and getting fat. Maybe I should keep track of my weight? I'm not the kind of kid that's embarassed about their weight, so I guess I could put a line or so about my current fitness deal at the bottom of this blog. After a jump or something. Haha. "Jump". I think maybe I could jump rope? Total grade school kitsch [did I use that word right?] but it does get your heart rate up. This reminds me vaguely of "oil free pad thai."

A healthy kid exercises about half an hour every day. My mother told me yesterday that she will give me fifty bucks as soon as I learn how to ride her bike. She and Geoff are getting me a bike for my birthday [July 14th] and I guess they don't want to waste their money. I haven't skated in over a week, and I figure I'll go out in about an hour to run around. It's really hot outside. I'd say somewhere in the 70s. I like summer break, but the weather's not so great. My favorite season is actually somewhere along the lines of autumn and winter. The trees in autumn are very beautiful, and going back to school is always a treat [call me crazy]. The greatest memories are always made during and right after ski season, so winter's a blast.

7:05 PM
Top Secret by Namie Amuro

Just came back in from exercising, yay. I did do some jump rope for about ten minutes. I stretched and then my mother taught me how to use her bike. Up until now I've always used kiddie bikes. Pathetic, I know. I rode around in straight lines but it was pretty fun and super relaxing. Didn't skateboard but you probably expected that. Right now I'm drinking kefir and eating a beef burrito. We get most of our Mexican takeout dinners from this place called "Muchas Gracias" near East Sylvan. They make really odd tasted burritos. For example, their "Carnitas" burrito has guacamole, jalapeno peppers, and is exorbitantly salty. Their "Beef" burrito is sweetish and tastes a little like tomato soup. I haven't really had a typical bean + rice + cheese + meat burrito since we started getting our suppers there.

Burritos remind me of [panes], who spells it "burito", as in "sweeto burito !!!" Or maybe she's corrected it. She hasn't really written "sweeto burito" in a long time.

Las Vegas is recognized for several things such as entertainment, gambling and for among the best food in the entire country. Varieties of wonderful dishes are there to try and it is a hard stuff to discover the bad meal if anyone is on the Strip, but here is a group of 5 most favorite foods of people in Las Vegas:Catfish Sloppy Joe:
It is served during 5pm at the time of the reception at lunch. It is a type of sandwich, which is unique as well as delicious treat. This dish is specially found in Mandalay Bay Casino for $11. Chef Rick Moonan created the dish Catfish Sloppy Joe was recently presented in a contest on Oprah at the review of top 10 sandwiches in the whole Las Vegas in which the score of 7on a scale of 1 to 5 is given by her. A unique turn is placed by the creation on the classic fish named Sloppy Joe.

The fish has solid structure and it is well-seasoned with a tasty flavor of barbeque Creole. The buttered potato roll is served containing the sandwich along with the nestling of potato chips and dill pickle in the inner part of the sandwich that gives a synergy of sweet and salty. After 5 pm it can be tried as an appetite for dinner for $9.

Lobster Benedict: – $19
A variety of nice options for breakfast is offered by the Terrace Pointe café as pancakes on the strip for $19, but lobster benedict can definitely be regarded as the best one. In lieu of the Standard English muffin and a topping of creamy hollandaise sauce with bacon strips, poached eggs, waffle of a potato, lobster meat’s big chunks makes it among the most creative and delicious dishes offered in the strip. One should try to play some poker games in Wynn Casino and h/she can quickly ensue sufficient time for getting one followed as well.

Prime Rib: - $35
Vegas is absolutely a town for the players fond of steak. A huge number of premier steakhouses are there lying on and off the strip, but Golden Steer is one among the best in the country. It is located just off side of the strip, the décor of which gives wonderful feel of Old Vegas to the diners like: the walls paneled with wood have fascinated the older celebrities like Rat Pack, who often dines there. The hospitality proves great. Prime Rib is one of the most popular choices of the customers as it provides its customers with a gentle, cooked perfectly juicy and varieties of 18 or 24 oz. of well-seasoned cut for about $35. About it, it is believed that to cut through the steak is just like to cut through butter. One should try to add the fresh salad of Caesar that has been prepared tableside for an additional treat. For people don’t prefer steak, Angels chicken is also a good choice.

Luv It Frozen Custard: - $5
Luv It Custard Shop has been regarded as a most classic and favorite of local people by the winner of Las Vegas Review Journal's Best of Las Vegas for a number of years and also ranked number 1 shop of ice-creams Travelocity, CitySearch, AOL City Guide, Las Vegas Weekly, and others. This shop has been open for more than 30 years and has a swing of regular customers that love some selected and premium flavors of ice-creams there. The shop avails the customers daily with fresh, affordable, delicious shakes, custard, and cones just for $5 makes this place valuable to check out. It is not a matter of fancy that the shop is very small and does not possess any place to sit at indoors, still considered as a well-liked place.

Burrito:
Ricardo has been regarded as a long-time winner of the ‘Best of’ Review Journal in the category of the restaurants of Mexico, within 25 years it has won the awards for 20 times. It is located nearby Rio, with wonderful décor as well as atmosphere. Often mariachis are there for entertaining the customers with complimentary chips as well as salsa prior to meal and the staff is really very hostile. Though, the real treat there is the meat that is seasoned and marinated perfectly. There are very big portions for burritos and they are filled with healthy dose of cheese, beans, and meat and can be attain just for $11.

I am spending another day in the Village Green - a.k.a. my backyard. After a week of grey overcast sky, interspersed with rain and tentative thunderstorms (your normal June weather, actually) the sun is back out. Hopefully the black flies haven't been reborn as well, but so far so good.

I have books with me, and a little notebook in case my sleeping muse wakes from it's slumber of several years. I remain optimistic. In the meantime, I keep my fingers in shape by very occasionally typing something nonsensical on this blog.

I am lazy today - incredibly so - and can't be bothered to hike or walk or bike or anything. I did all that yesterday, and feel that the occasional roll from my stomach to my back is all the physical activity I need today. Perhaps in a little while I will walk down to Gringo's and get a fat burrito and a peach smoothie. Until then...

I am reading about PBS's series Mystery! which has been collecting the best of British mystery and sleuthing since 1980. (At least through 1997 - I don't remember if the series still plays.) I picked up the book because flipping though it revealed Jeremy Brett as my favorite Sherlock Holmes. The book is full of good photographs and excellent sunny afternoon reading - interviews with mystery writers and the actors who played Miss Marple and Inspector Morse, etc.

The book is making me want to get on the Netflix ferris wheel again (I just put my account on HOLD for the summer) and watch the Sherlock Holmes episodes from start to finish. All 41 of them will make a good winter project I guess, since I know that I honestly won't get through them this summer, however much I may want to.

I guess for now I will go back to Gregory Maguire's Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. My friend Julie and I are trying to make reading a "summer thing", as much as a winter thing - and I feel that I can succeed at this, since lounging around can be done just as well outside in the sun as it can on a couch. The movie watching, not so much. Now I just have to promise myself that I will read a classic or two this summer, and I'll be set.

It's the end of our two week budget period, and cash is very thin. Big burrito + cup of water (free from El Pollo Loco) + 3 See's candies (from a gift box of chocolates) = a decent cheap lunch.

Breakfast:

L: Banana Oatmeal with plain soy milk and walnuts.

R: steaming cup of coffee. I'm running out of beans. Need to go get some sometime this week.

L: Shortly after breakfast I had a cookie

Lunch:

R: Fage with berries and granola. Miss Dottie was no where to be see, so she missed out.

L: more berries

R: Salad: spinach, red leaf lettuce, zucchini, carrots, beets, tomatoes, and orange slices with Italian dressing. Adding the orange slices made the salad taste so refreshing! Plus, the vitamin C will help with the absorption of iron in the spinach.

Snack:

There are no pictures for these, I subconsciously ate like a normal person (one who does not take pictures of her food) lol From what I can remember I had more TJ's sweet potato chips, more cookies w/ a little bit of soy milk....I think that was it.

Dinner: Burritos

L: Spanish rice. I came up with a new easy (and delicious) recipe. Soon to be in the "Recipes" page. I try to update as best I can. If you don't see a recipe there that you want, please just ask. I'd be glad to help out.

R: "Refried" Kidney beans

L: I used Soyrizo instead of Yves "turkey" for the "meat" part. It tasted a little sweeter. A little too oily for my liking, but I think the other flavors in the burrito balanced it out.

R: A while back when I made Enchiladas I froze the remaining batch of Green Enchilada Sauce. Stuck it in the microwave for a few minutes and it still tasted just as spicy as the first day!

L: Finished product. Mmm soo good.

R: The kitties decided to rebel and tell us they want a new batch of kitty grass. Couldn't they have just asked nicely?

Note: I made the cookies last night and had one right before going to bed. Here's a picture of it for the record.

I'm just having one of those weekends where I really. Want. Robertos. Or Adalbertos, Cotija, La Posta, Los Panchos... god, anything.

For those of you who don't know, these are San Diego (my home town) taquerias. Don't be mislead by the name, most of the time you're going for a burrito. If it's after 2PM, most likely a carne asada burrito. Or rolled tacos (taquitos) with guacamole or sour cream with cotija cheese on top.

I live in Central NJ, and we are blessed to have a large hispanic population nearby. You can get good mexican food, and it is better than any other I've found on the east coast and better, to my taste, than pretty much any tex-mex, period. Particularly in New Brunswick, at Noa Noa.

But it's not the same. There is simply no other food like border-mex in San Diego. The further north you get - i.e. Orange County and LA - well, it's just not the same. The tortillas are warmed on a griddle. I can't imagine how many orders of taquitos have been cooked in the same corn oil, each batch tasting better than the previous. When it's the morning and you're slightly hung, nothing cuts the fog like a machaca burrito. And the carne asada - well, it simply transforms the cheapest cut of beef you can find into ambrosia in a tortilla.

Because I'm jonesing hard, I picked up a flank steak today and am going to attempt to make a close approximation from some internet recipes I found:

Juice of 2 oranges

Juice of 2 limes

2 jalapeños, chopped, with seeds

1/8 cup soy sauce

1/4 cup white vinegar

4 cloves garlic

Several healthy grinds of black pepper

I dropped the steak in a ziploc inside a baking dish and refrigerated it. Turning every few hours. Grilling it tonight, chopping and serving in tortillas with avocado, salsa, crema and lime wedges. Results will follow soon.

If you've got your own San Diego mexican food recipe you want to share, please post it.

In the mood for Mexican food, but not up to the task of going to a taqueria or spending all that mon

In the mood for Mexican food, but not up to the task of going to a taqueria or spending all that money? Here's how I prepare my frozen burritos to make them just a little tastier. First off, I recommend Amy's frozen burritos. They are organic, with unbleached flour tortillas, so they're slightly healthier.

Take the burrito, loosely wrap it in a paper towel and microwave it for about a minute. This makes it so the inside isn't frozen when you bite into it. Next, fry it on a pan, making sure each side of the burrito is nicely browned. Serve with a salad or tortilla chips, or both, and salsa. Top with an avocado for a truly gourmet treat!

Why didn’t anyone tell me? Did you think I already knew? How could I have missed this? I

Why didn't anyone tell me? Did you think I already knew? How could I have missed this? I mean - it's like two different worlds, comingling in one heartfelt bowl or box.

I knew about chocolate, I mean - who doesn't? For my seventh birthday I had a big ol' Crunch bar... Years later I would have some chocolate cake, chocolate flavored brownies, and hell, Dunkaroos are basically cookies and chocolate frosting. But let's face facts, america - Iced Cream takes the Cake. (Yes indeed, that's a fun sentence to say)

Then chocolate merged with the cold queen of the dairy scene, Iced Cream, do ya know what I mean? That was another fun sentence for you to wrap your mouths around while you say it.

And today was the first day I discovered the world of chocolate iced cream for my very own. It was different than you'd expect - because I was just finishing a burrito, and somehow still hungry. Then I decided to try chocolate ice cream. I know, right?

Now I don't think things will ever be the same. What do you think?
