I broke down yesterday, and made an appointment to see the doctor. I cant even describe how much pain I was in, it was immense none the less. I would elevate my leg, which would make it feel much better, but once I lowered my foot the pain came shooting back, so bad, that I couldn't even walk on that foot.

I Googled how to take care of wounds and burns, and I couldn't find a single straight answer, I read that I should cover it, use Neosporin, use rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, saline washes, soap; and then of course I read in other places, that I shouldn't do any of those. I tried all of them over the past 4 days, and none of them seemed to help, the pain just got worse, and my ankle and foot had gotten really swollen.

I sucked up my pride, and got into the doctor the same day. Of course, being in a small town, the nurse looked at me like I was nuts after I explained what I was doing, and looked even more shocked when I showed her my sorry excuse for an ankle. After a very long two hours of sitting in the doctors office waiting for second opinions on what to do, I was given a few prescriptions...and get to go back for another visit this Thursday.

$130.00 worth of prescription drugs later...

Silver Sulfadiazine 1% (Topical Antibiotic for burns)

Levaquin 500mg (Oral Antibiotic)

Darvocet (Pain reliever)

The doctor covered by tattoo with silver sulfa and bandaged it, so I wasn't able to get a picture of what my tattoo looked like right before using the prescription ointment, but I will keep on blogging the healing process. Just now, keep in mind for the next 7 days I'm on prescriptions. I will try to take pictures everyday, to see what kind of impact the prescriptions may have.

***One Day After Doctors Visit

(Silver Sulfa/Once a Day, Levaquin/Once a Day, Pain Relievers-As Needed)

The Nurse made it very clear that this is going to probably scar terribly. I am going to stay optimistic about it. Funny thing was she asked my if I knew how to post information on the Internet, she said that I really should warn people about the dangers of using Nuviderm...Ha. I am one step ahead of that!

I got to thinking, everyone I have talked to had a lot of trouble during their second application. I honestly haven't talked to anyone that was on their third or so application, since they all stopped after their second application. I have a feeling that treating the same area twice or more times, is just too much trauma for the skin to handle. I don't know if maybe waiting twice as long in between applications would help that or not.

On my previous post 'L' commented on using colloidal silver bandages; No one in town carries those here, but I think that is a great recommendation for anyone whose in the healing process. I would have to also agree, that 50% is way to strong. I used 46% this last time, and I'm really regretting that. I would definitely recommend using a lower strength...I would personally rather have to do many weak applications, than go through this mess again.

And to think the thought of *hmmm a facial peel might be nice* crossed my mind when I was researching TCA before I purchased nuviderm. I am SO glad that was just merely a thought...Can you imagine putting 12-30% strength on your face...It makes me cringe just thinking about it!

I almost forgot. What would this post be without a nasty bandage picture? My tattoo is still oozing.

***Bandage after day one of using Silver Sulfa. The discharge color is orange/brown.

Most people have suffered a sunburn, if not as an adult; perhaps as a child. It’s a very painful

Most people have suffered a sunburn, if not as an adult; perhaps as a child. It’s a very painful and unpleasant experience. Even the creams and sprays that are there to ease the pain- don’t work that well. In most instances, time is your best form of treatment. These superficial sunburns are just that- they’re superficial, usually only a first-degree burn; that only penetrates the first layer of skin. Imagine what the pain and suffering would be if your burn was even deeper? Imagine the torture that people live through when suffering a burn injury that is 2nd and even 3rd degree?

Burn injuries can be caused by several incidents. There are electrical burn injuries, which are caused by being exposed to high voltage electricity. Generally, electrical burns have a point of entry and a point of exit, causing burns at both locations. Electrical burns can also stop the heart from beating if the voltage is high enough, it can also throw the heart out of rhythm. Many times, people will suffer heart attacks and need defibrillation to recover; other times; they may die. Electrical burn injuries are very common at workplaces, as well as, at home. Most electrical burn injuries are due to faulty wiring, improper lock-out of live electricity, and lack of training and education.

There are many other types of incidents that may cause burn injuries at work, as well. One of the most common is known as thermal burns. These burns are associated with steam, flash burns, hot surfaces and hot liquids. As well, chemical burns, are common. These burns occur when a person comes into contact with a chemical that is acidic or has a strong alkaloid. Many times, workplaces do not label chemicals properly, do not train employees, and do not have personal protective equipment to prevent these burn injuries.

Burn injuries can occur at home, at work, and in automobiles. One study found that 43% of all fires occurred at home, 17% occurred on the roads and highways, and 8% occurred at work; the remainder of fire accidents occurred elsewhere. Regardless of the place of occurrence, studies have shown that at least 1.25 million people will suffer burn injuries each year. Burn injuries damage the nerve endings in the skin; those that are severe- may even damage a person’s muscle, fat, and bone. Depending upon the circumstance, burns can also affect the respiratory system, the body’s production of fluids, body temperature, thermal regulation, and physical appearance. Most of the third-degree burns seen in emergency rooms across the United States require long-term treatments.

At least 40,000 people are hospitalized each year for burn injuries. At least 3,400 of them are children under the age of 14. Burn injuries that occur at home are best prevented by simple strategies- like supervision of children, keeping matches and lighters out of reach from children, keeping children away from stoves, ovens, and grills; maintaining water heaters, wiring, and keeping chemicals like gasoline out of your home. If you've been burned by a someone's negligence, please contact a personal injury attorney in Sarasota.

You know that feeling? The one right when you wake up? The feeling that, somehow, at some point during the night, you swallowed a bug? I do and it freakin' happened to me when I awoke this beautiful morning.

I. HATE. THAT. FEELING.

This is an intensely zoomed in picture of some random guy at the park smoking a cig. Gross, by the way. I love this picture because you can see the light from the cigarette reflecting off of the smokers hand and it just looks so gritty and dramatic.

-----------

today i had to wake up early. which probably explains why i fell asleep after lunch before i could start on my homework, something i never do. well, not that i do my homework either, but im usually playing rugby 08 or watching shows instead. i guess ias arent very good for your body clock.

fps was fun. it was interesting to be on the other side of the door, invigilating the participating teams. although it was generally unproductive for me in a pragmatic sense, seeing as i only read 1 chapter of my ee general reading for the 5 hours i was there. still, it was interesting. i would much rather do brainless admin work than homework. sorting papers is just so fun.

----------------

i need to watch a guitar concert before our foa. so unless i find a school who is having one within the next 2 weeks, i am going to end up going for the mgs concert tomorrow. in which case i will just cross my fingers and hope we have no homework. although i have some vague recollection of various projects due sometime in the near future. just not so near, i hope.

----------------

why is it so hard to make decisions. decisions that matter. because people matter. when it comes down to stupid things like deciding to cycle 10 km this evening, its a simple choice. homework or cycling (+ ipod). obviously the ipod wins. and i love my sennheisers. its so fun to cycle/run with it.

but when it comes to people. now thats where the fun starts. fun, and tears. oh life, why doth thou taunt us so.

The day after my best friend Melba got married, I had a lot of cleaning to do.
In an attempt to forget my morning-after aversion to light and sound, I made the following to-do list:

Rent steam cleaner for basement room.

Wash walls.

Clean and disinfect gross bathroom downstairs.

Wash curtains in pool room.

Wash (or burn) bedding from downstairs.

Call doctor about raccoon bites.

In honor of Melba's marriage, here's one of her favorite cartoons, "Face Like A Frog".

as I was watching an episode of Modern Marvels, it was an episode on underwear, and towards the end they were showing moisture wicking undershirts that are now being issued to military personel. I recognized them, as my husband has several, they were issued with his new Digital uniforms, but then they mentioned that they are made of polyester and one surgeon noticed that he was having to remove burnt and melted shirts from wounds before he could treat the injury, because polyester burns and melts and drips, causeing more wounds to the wearer. This is a phenomenon I was already familiar with after my father was burned in an explosion while wearing a police uniform, which included polyester dress pants. They burned, and melted and dripped into his boots, makeing his injuries even worse.

Anyway, they went on to say they have devloped a flame retardant version, which still wicks, but does not burn or melt. Unfortunately, this is not yet standard issue for the military. I have decided when and if hubby is deployed again, he will be taking these with him. Since these shirts are $58 each I need to start saving now... and as long as I am considering things this far ahead I might as well start thinking about socks too... wouldn't it be great if I could send him off with a bunch of pair of hand knit socks? I have ordered the yarn for one pair, and hopefully i can have more here by the time I get those knit.

I will post one more romantic, loose poem before I move back into something more concrete. Mostly because of the note Edward (not -my- Edward) left on my Stifled Serenade poem where he mentioned the raw pain of love. I actually wrote a poem specifically about that very thing, here is:

3rd Degree

An ache so persistent, it rips, it tears, it scars,
Like the pressure of a burn, searing the layers
Of skin—so thin and fragile. The sensation
You cause scorches my heart. My desire inspires
Each heated moment blistered on my brain.
Exquisite pain at each touch, such a pleasurable
Hurt following your words. Your love drowns
And suffocates me. It stings my lips and smarts
My eyes, leaving me unfocused and dazed,
Completely amazed at the power of my passion.
Every effervescent lyric and sugary rhyme could
Never define the feeling invoked in my soul. Only
Pain so sweet and real could stand the test of time.
For every soul has felt the extraordinary tenderness
Of a fresh bruise, intensely purple and swollen,
Demanding constant attention and divorcing any warring
Thoughts within the mind. Your gentle affection infects
Me with an incurable ache. No remedy exists for my
Heart. And so I am destined to suffer a love so hot
It singes the very edges of my life. Even your body
Entwined with mine, your soothing touch cannot
Cool the ardor consuming my soul. Your breath
Merely feeds the raging fire in my heart. I am charred
And bleeding in your hands. The masochism of my
Emotion overpowers me to ever let you go since
You are branded on my heart forever more.

Yep. I’m starting to pack. After I had a dream last night

I keep picking titles with -ING o.O

Yep. I'm starting to pack. After I had a dream last night that it was already a weeks from now and I only had a few more hours left before I had to leave. And in those few hours I had to pack my stuff. Stuff for a year. Yeah, that was kinda my reality-check. I realized that a week isn't that long. And I still have so many people to meet before I leave...

Yesterday something really scary happened. I got on the bus after meeting a friend in town, and I saw this huge cloud of black smoke, on the hill where our house is, just further up, kindof over the hill behind some trees. It looked really huge and scary and black. And it was one of those clouds after an explosion, or at least it looked like one. I told myself that it was probably nothing but I still called my mom at home, just because I'm paranoid and you know... she said she hadn't heard an explosion and that she can't see any black cloud... But as soon as I got home we heard sirens... and in the evening my dad heard on the radio that a house in Meggen (the area right next to lucerne, where we leave, really near us) had burned down completely. And today I read in the newspaper that a barn had burned down. No humans were hurt, but 30 animals died :( There was one singed cow that ran out and then wanted to run back in because it probably had a calf, but the managed to keep it out... and the farmer had gotten awards for his milk cows. They couldn't interview him because he was so shocked... The people that live around the barn said they heard an explosion and then saw 10-20 metre high flames coming out of the barn. I mean really, that cloud was huge, I could see it from the city! Which is about 20 min away from there...

And then today it was really rainy. We had the windows open around noon. And you could smell ashes. The wind probably blew the particles over... we don't live far away at all, so it's possible. And then I had a horrible thought: those ashes aren't just from wood. We were smelling more than just burned wood.

It's sad :( It was the biggest fire in that are in 10 years... The whole barn had burned down by the time the fire department had gotten there... I hope the farmer will be able to keep working... poor guy, I mean, he lost all of his cows and pigs and calfs.

Well... something happier: on the same day, 25 year ago my parents got married :) So they've been married for 25 years... a long time. :)

Today I saw Daria (~chiffonshorts) for the last time before she, and then I leave. :( But we have skype and msn and the internet in general so it won't be so bad :)

You will not believe what just happened to me. Right now. I took a break from writing to go gt some juice and crereal (<3). And I took out the bowl, turned around to get the cereal, and I knocked the bowl to the floor where it broke. So I had to pick the pieces up and make sure there weren't any little parts lying around anymore. BUt that's not all.

Same player tries again, I took another little bowl out, set it on the counter, turned around to get the cereal and it happened all over again. -.-

I broke two old little bowls in 5 minutes. Somehow gravity, or what/whoever, doesn't want me to eat cereal. Why does this stuff happen to me? Ugh vey...

<3

Airways is pressuring pilots to use less fuel, undermining their authority and possibly compromising safety, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Airline Pilots Association.

Eight pilots and their union have filed complaints with the Federal Aviation Administration, accusing the airline of infringing on their authority and making them fly with less fuel than they feel is safe, said James Ray, a spokesman for the U.S. Airline Pilots Association.

The pilot in command of each flight determines the amount of fuel carried. FAA regulations state that each flight is required to carry enough fuel to reach its destination plus an extra 45 minutes' worth.

The eight senior captains say U.S. Airways singled them out for carrying 10 to 15 minutes of extra fuel above the FAA mandate and called them in for "fuel conservation training," Ray said.

Ray said the training amounts to "intimidation" and said the pilots feel it could place their licenses in jeopardy if they request extra fuel.
"Captains have been singled out for exercising their judgment on determining fuel loads for their flights," he said.
But a spokesman for U.S. Airways insisted the training is not punitive and denied the pilots' jobs were in danger.

"We are absolutely not employing intimidation tactics to pressure pilots into operating aircraft with unsafe fuel levels," Morgan Durrant said. "Safety is the number one priority in everything we do."

Durrant said the airline organized the paid, one-day training session to review safety practices and emphasize the need to use appropriate fuel levels in a time of necessary conservation.

Extra fuel makes the plane heavier, causing it to burn more fuel as it flies. A gallon of jet fuel weighs almost 7 pounds, and a large, twin-engine jetliner can burn hundreds of pounds of fuel and hour.

"Our arrival fuel amounts on average are more than twice the FAA minimum standards," Durrant said. "With the high price of oil, it is a balance between having enough to travel safely and also flying efficiently."

U.S. Airways said it will pay $2 billion more in fuel costs than it did last year.
advertisement

In the complaint, the pilots said the training undermines their authority to determine how much fuel is necessary.

"If a pilot doesn't feel that a plane has enough fuel in it for the trip that he or she is about to make, then they have the discretion of not flying that flight," Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said Wednesday.

If there’s one thing I managed to learn from my forestry classes as UW (I took two, that makes

If there's one thing I managed to learn from my forestry classes as UW (I took two, that makes me an expert) it's that fires are a natural phenomenon that should really just run their course. Okay, granted it wasn't a natural phenomenon so much that it stopped the Native Americans from burning the occasional field, but it was still a lot. But it was enough that these huge raging fires we get these days were few and far between.

The reason? The underbrush. Fires used to burn so regularly that the build up of dead wood under the forest canopy was minimal at best. Fires would start, run along the ground maybe a few feet high burning dead branches that had fallen to the ground and the occasional sapling. Then we came into the picture and said fires were a bad thing. We should put out the fires. We should put our houses in these areas that have no more fires. We don't need to worry about forest fires because of firefighters.

The problem here is that whereas fires in the past used to be ground fires, now so much dead material builds up on the ground that the flames reach higher. The result? Canopy fires. These are the intense fires that wipe out thousands of square miles in a single day. It's not the wind conditions, it's not the temperature, it's the fact that most forests are sitting on enough fuel to heat probably every home in the US (that's a guess, I have no scientific data, in fact all of this is what I vaguely remember from a class I took four years ago).

They did a study once: they cleared all the underbrush and dead hanging branches in an area about two hundred yards wide and three miles long in the middle of a major forest in the Pacific Northwest. What they were doing was trying to re-create what the forest would be if fire were to take it's frequent natural course.

Sure enough, within a few years a fire poured through the area. The fire was raging, canopies were burning, forest creatures were BBQing. Then it hit the fire break. The fire dropped down from the canopies (without the fuel to heat the canopies to burning temp as well as flames to reach them, they stayed unharmed) burned along the ground for the two hundred yards, and then jumped back up to the canopies as soon as it reached the other side. Pretty god-damned amazing. Photos of the place showed a blackened forest with a long strip of green down the middle. These are the reasons people do control burns.

Living in California and not having a fire break around your house is just as retarded as living in Florida and being surprised when a hurricane blows your house down. I say let the forests burn their natural course, or at least clear away all the dead material around your house before you start whining your house burned down.

I went to the Apple store today because my charger was damaged. It was plugged in charging the laptop and then began to smoke and melted the wire. Had the normal routine of the household been going on we would not have been home or in the same room to catch it and the house most likely would have burned down. Showing my charger to the Genius Bar they proceeded to scan and poke at it and process a claim. When they scanned it they found it to be 2 years old and out of warranty...they refused to do anything about it. After almost burning down my house they didn't want to replace a defective charger.

I was forced to purchase a new charger since the laptop needs to have power at some point. I found the whole experience dishartening. I am a huge Apple fan and I would like to think that my touting of the Apple brand and product has caused several in my department to purchase Apple products...yet they will not replace a defective charger. I will need to rethink my purchase of the new 3G iPhone when we get 3G in the area. After this experience, I have a bad taste in my mouth. I guess it really is "Buyer Beware".

Every time I see Burn Notice I'm amazed that this is the kind of show that you only find on cable these days. It's escapist entertainment, light action drama with humour. Instinctively you'd think "Escapist entertainment" would pretty much define what's on the broadcast networks, but they don't really have a lot of that. USA, which demanded that creator Matt Nix relocate Burn Notice to Miami to make it lighter and fluffier, has become a cable powerhouse simply by cornering the market on the kind of light entertainment that used to come easy to the networks, but for some reason doesn't any more.

LightScribe:

VitalBodies installed a DVD burner in our new Lenovo D10 Workstation but had not attempted to setup LightScribe in Ubuntu. LightScribe allows you to burn a label on your disk rather than using a pen or label. Why burn a label? Some pens, over time, can eat right through the disk and damage your data. Some labels will throw the disk (spinning at high RPM) off balance.

Odd Anomalies:

VitalBodies got disks to burn and everything works. There were a few Anomalies along the way. Like trying to start the software using the menus did not work until we rebooted.

EDIT: I had just burned a label with LightScribe for this blog article. I did not need to add data to the disk as I was just checking the label burner. I flipped the disk to the data side for whenever the next data burn might be and thus BROKE Nautilus. Turns out you could get a SEGMENT FAULT error from this command:

sudo nautilus
Initializing nautilus-share extension
Segmentation fault

Removed the blank disk and that FIXED Nautilus.

Just a side note: This error does not happen with the disk label side down but only data side down.

In other words, only when the data side is towards the laser.

I wondered if this only happens with blank disks?

Answer, yes...

Suggestions:

VitalBodies burned a disk and it came out light (low contrast) so we burned the same disk again to increase the contrast. Looks great. The original image was low contrast. Consider higher contrast text and imagery for better results. VitalBodies made a new GIMP and Inkscape template for burning. The image at the top is from the new template.

VitalBodies wants to thanks the helpful folks on the Ubuntu forums and everyone that made LightScribe on Linux possible.

Forty something years after the Vietnam war, the people from Vietnam just won the most elusive prize in the whole world, the ever so popular "Best Burn in History Award." Most conspiracy theorists, or just me, would say that they intentionally applied just enough floor wax on the floor so when Miss USA would walk by, she would fall and make her pay for the entire Vietnam War. What's more, and wasn't shown on TV was a clear chant, coming from the Vietnamese crowd saying: "Me Chinese me play joke, me put pipi in your Coke." Here is the video for you to see for yourself.

We had one of those All-American sort of Sundays. We slept in a bit, Frank napped on the couch, I vacuumed and washed the floors. (And color me surprised that Murphy's Oil Soap has gotten the tile floor in my kitchen more clean than any other cleaner I've used on it since we've lived here.) Then we went to a local park and had a BBQ/picnic for dinner, I walked a nature trail with the kids while Frank did some studying, we all played on the playground for a bit, then when we got home I decided to make Rice Krispies treat with Lane to top it all off.

It was all going great until an errant Rice Krispie fell onto the stovetop and Lane tried to pick it up... burning two of her fingers in the process. :( I realized what she was doing and grabbed and pulled her hand away before it could have been much worse, thankfully. But I'm still disappointed that I let it happen at all. :( I was right there! Oh well. It could have been much worse, and it wasn't.

They're not bad. Her index finger has a blister just a bit bigger than the size of a pencil eraser, and her middle finger has one a bit smaller than a pencil eraser. Oh man, did she cry. She's not exactly a child of reasonably-scaled reactions to things (to call her intense is unjust to the word "intense") so this smallish boo-boo sent her off the deep end. The wailing went on for at least 20 minutes, followed by sniffling and recurring bouts of tears for 20 minutes after that. It wasn't for at least an hour that I managed to get a smile out of her. We did all the requisite first aid for a second degree burn -- cold running water for as long as I could get her to keep her fingers in the bathroom sink, then sitting on the couch watching a baseball game with her fingers in a cup of cold water after that. (See, baseball! Even an All-American distraction for my little girl!)

So now she's in bed, fingers intact. My heart has mostly recovered. And hopefully our upstairs neighbor hasn't called Child & Family Services on us.

June 26, 2008
By Tammy R. Lawson

It is no wonder that men are virtually messed up when it comes to women.

Remember during the 1970's when Gloria Steinem said women had to be equal with men in every aspect?

In the midst of this new idealism, women who slathered themselves with Charlie cologne were heading off to work in Capri pants, and told the men to step back...they could now hold their own doors open, thank you very much.

Men were not happy about this newfound movement, either. After all, their caveman ancestors were dragging the females around by the hair of their head. Men had always been the dominant species-working the fields, voting other men into offices, paying the bills, and they were the boss, or at least thought so.

Suddenly (well, 50 years after winning the right to vote) women were 'burning their bras' and men were burning their dinners.

Can you imagine how the husband felt when he came home from work one day and met his wife coming out the door? "I'll be back later, honey. I got a job this morning, and I'm leaving now to see Helen Reddy speak at a women's rights meeting. Oh, Swanson just came out with a new TV dinner, so put it in the oven for 18 minutes. Bye!"

I'd say the poor guy sat in his recliner watching Hee Haw, eating Salisbury steak, and thinking "What just happened here??"

But one minor detail in the women's movement backfired: While Gloria had women proving themselves worthy of equal opportunity, some became spoiled, impolite brats.

The other day, I witnessed a man approaching one of the doors outside of a local convenience store. A well dressed woman sashayed behind him while he politely opened the door and smiled, stepping aside for her to enter. In passing, she intentionally pulled the door from his grasp and kept walking as a look of bewilderment came over him.

The male counterpart does not know what to do anymore. If a man opens a door for a woman, she gives him a strange look or ignores him completely, and forget about hearing a pleasant thank you in return.

In those evil Cosmopolitan magazines, it's acceptable for a woman to ask a man out on a date. But if the guy doesn't immediately reach for the check after dinner, how dare he insinuate that she lift a finger to at least view it (the convenience of selective equality).

The gallant chivalry that sets apart man from beast is slowly vanishing, but there are a few gentlemen lingering who exercise the manners within by opening a door for us, even when we trample their masculinity with mixed signals, indicating there is still hope for men-kind (at least in public).

Gloria meant well, but 'burning your bra' didn't have to mean burning the man who tries. And, I personally never burned my own bra. Figuratively speaking, I was thankful for the support.
