Os bunkers (ou bancas de areia), são obstáculos do campo que têm o objetivo de dificultar o progresso dos golfistas. Eles podem ser divididos em:

1. Bunkers de fairways

O fairway está à esq. Repare a diferença entre as gramas.

Os primeiros se localizam próximos ao traçado ideal de cada par do campo, ou seja, os fairways. Geralmente, os jogadores mais experientes não têm problema com estes obstáculos, dado o costume de serem precisos em suas tacadas.

2. Bunkers de Green

Os Bunkers de green estão sempre em volta dos greens, quase sempre à sua frente. Jogadores que errem a mão no approach (tacada do fairway pro green) estão condenados a jogar areia pro alto neste azar.

3. Waste Bunkers

O bunker mais a direita é um waste bunker (antes do lago), os demais sao green bunkers.

Por fim, os Waste Bunkers. Estes bunkers, ao contrário dos dois primeiros, se destinam a salvar os jogadores de apuros maiores. São mais estreitos que os demais e estão localizados em lugares estratégicos, como na beira de rios, lagos e descidas. Evitam que o jogador tenha de dropar nova bola e acumular penalidades.

Como vencer estes desafios?

Existe um taco próprio para ser utilizado nas bancas de areia. Seu nome é sand wedge.

Este taco possui uma particularidade em relação aos demais. Sua cabeça possui uma inclinação consideravelmente maior, o que lhe permite maior penetração na areia, e ao mesmo tempo, ao entrar em contato com a bolinha, jogá-la pra cima.

Enfim, com o auxílio de um professor de golfe capacitado como o Assis de Souza, vencer os bunkers e demais obstáculos do golfe será um desafio normal. Este é um dos motivos do nosso esporte exigir muito mentalmente: é necessário traçar várias estratégias, que mudam rapidamente conforme a situação, até que se emboque.

Commentary: More evidence of my increasing laziness as the summer goes on--I finished this book and started the draft for this review on June 2nd, about a month ago. Goodness. Let's see if I can remember anything about this story...

My first thought is that it was a fast-paced, high energy read. Had me hooked every step of the way, and not just with action and adventure, but very intelligent twists and turns. It's meant for the Young Adult audience, and reads a bit like it too--I guess the dialogue's just simpler, characters not as developed, and the romance is very tween-ish. Not to say it wasn't enjoyable, but it was just something very obvious that was there throughout the whole novel.

However the Young Adult factor didn't take away anything from the plot and action. It starts with the end: the destruction and assumed death of all the main characters (super intelligent genius kids held in a military installation), which can make you kind of think "Well, what's the point of reading this novel if I already know what's going to happen to all the characters?" However, Henderson's unorthodox beginning merely draws you in, and makes you want to know how the characters ended up in their seemingly deadly predicament.

I can't say anything else about the plot without giving away the whole story, but I would definitely recommend this. The author kept surprising me throughout the book--very well thought-out, and a good, fast read.

Diseño - Centro Comercial Fontabella

Tal parece que los arquitectos del nuevo centro comercial Fontabella  se inspiraron en un pueblito al norte de Italia para el diseño "neourbanístico" del parque comercial.  Al menos, eso es lo que sugiere el triste nombre "Fontabella" (noticia).

Desde hace varios meses vi con ilusión el diseño de ese proyecto, que según yo sabía se inspiraba en la Antigua Guatemala y el nombre había sido impuesto a la fuuuuerza.  No sé, creo que antes tenía una plaza central y me imaginé que por fín veríamos en Guatemala un centro comercial que tuviera espacios al aire libre.

Tal parece que los guatemaltecos aún no están listos para que "les de él aire" y se encargaron de construir un centro comercial blindado y con un enorme sótano: frío, húmedo y obscuro.

Además, el nuevo centro comercial Oakland Mall (otra gringada más) tendrá una murralla frontal de miedo.

El diseño de un horrendo barco para el centro comercial Miraflores me recordó que era ideal para poner gigantografías de los monstruos que han gobernado y gobiernan el país.  Pero el muro de Oakland Mall está fantástico para hacer esto.  No pudieron hacer una pared más grande y grotesca porque no les alcanzaba el cielo.  En serio, los guatemaltecos disfrutan de vivir en jaulas de concreto, con vidrios y temen a los ambientes al aire libre.

Que triste, con un clima tan rico como el de los trópicos estos chaaapines disfrutan de estar en jaulas.

¿Cómo era esa parte del himno de Guatemala que tenía un quetzal libre y no se qué otras pendejadas?

It's funny in retrospect. I bet a lot of Fargo's supporters like 'dilla, 447, ross, fargo, fong, sac bee, et al wish they could go back in time and do things differently. After all, had they shown personal restraint and let us simply have some dialog with KJ--without interrupting every 20 min with another TMZ piece---he may just have emerged as merely a well-groomed, passionate champion of public safety, and not a lot more. (It's amazing that in one breath people were spewing nasty things about him, then in the next they were admonishing him for avoiding them at public forums).

That said, Fargo isn't the only one who will be on the blooper reel instead of the highlight film when this is all said ad done. Many observers have noted KJ's campaign has been an exercise in experimentation and played out campaign tactics that haven't seemed to inspire people much, and I agree to a certain extent. Squinting through all the smoke and mirrors, I have been able to discern what I perceive to be some potential chinks in KJ's armor---notably in the areas of communication, unifying leadership skills, and public relations.

In my opinion, KJ's decision to hinge his campaign on a fear-inducing generalization ("Sacramentans tell me they feel unsafe") was a highly flammable idea that ended up backfiring and polarizing the community. It's not 2004. People don't fall for the "elect me and I'll protect you" pitch anymore (or do they?). Even the Sac PD, one of KJ's endorsers (!) was forced to disagree with him saying "Sac has crime issues, but citizens can feel safe" (when they KNOW San Jose has twice the people and is safer than Sac). KJ's generalizations have done little to bring people together---which doesn't fit well with his "city that works for everyone" campaign promise. KJ showed he is perhaps a bit out touch, too.

But wait. While KJ's PR flubs are notable, they still pale in comparison to the bloopers we have seen the Fargo camp fart out. Their character attacks on Johnson were melodramatic, abusive, and completely UNCOOL. Instead of sitting back and letting the KJ story tell itself, Fargo and camp decided they would try to make our decision for us. If Fargo loses, it will be because of the hideous way she misused her position, and allowed the attacks to continue in earnest without protest. It goes to show what little confidence Fargo's supporters had in her ability to get re-elected strictly on the merits of her track record--which is reason enough not to vote for her, if you ask me.

Personally I think both campaigns have suffered from the same problem: Lack of a high quality campaign management (Dale Howard on Fargo's side---with untold Ross direction; and Christy Setzer on Johnson's side). Both sides have been sloppy..

BUT..

Let's face it, KJ's were PR flubs, whereas Fargo's were breaches of the public's trust---particularly since she signed an agreement promising she would run a clean campaign. So if you're voting on who ran the better campaign, I am going to have to say Johnson because he ran his clean, and stayed the course, no matter how TEMPTING it must have been to shovel up one of those mud pies on the ground and fire them back at city hall.

Alas, when all the smoke has cleared Tuesday and a victor has emerged, the only REAL LOSERS will be the people who barbecued their cash---and reputations---needlessly smearing KJ.

IL GOLF

Il golf è uno sport nel quale un giocatore deve far entrare una pallina in una buca scavata nel terreno colpendola con differenti tipi di bastoni, nel rispetto delle 'Regole del Golf', partendo da un punto prestabilito ed impiegando il minor numero di colpi possibile. Il golf è uno dei pochi sport con una palla che non ha un'area di gioco standard: ogni 'campo da golf' ha un proprio unico design ed è generalmente composto da 9 o 18 buche di varie lunghezze.
L'origine del gioco è un argomento estremamente controverso. Si ritiene comunemente che il golf sia originario della Scozia da dove si è poi diffuso nelle isole britanniche e di lì nel resto del mondo, tuttavia alcuni appassionati e storici citano l'esistenza di documenti scritti, ordinanze e decreti emessi per proteggere il pubblico dai giocatori, la cui evidenza, incontrovertibile,{Steven van Hengel, storico olandese} testimonia la pratica di un gioco chiamato "golf" in Olanda già dal 1297. L'opinione diffusa che il nome deriva dall'acronimo "Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden" è totalmente priva di fondamento. L'origine della parola va piuttosto ricercata, seguendo un approccio etimologico negli idiomi scozzesi ed olandesi medievali, nella parola "kolve" che significava mazza.
Il golf è uno sport disciplinato ora da numerose regole, apparentemente complicate: dovendo prevedere varie situazioni di gioco (su cui influiscono morfologia dei campi, situazioni ambientali, vantaggi assegnati ai giocatori (i cosiddetti "handicap"), materiali a disposizione, tipi di competizione) le regole del golf sono aggiornate e pubblicate con cadenza quadriennale a cura di enti preposti ("Governing Body"): per l'Europa è il Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews (R&A), in Scozia; per l'area americana la United States Golf Association (USGA).
L'importanza di conoscere le regole per un giocatore di golf è massima: si tratta probabilmente dell'unico sport in cui ognuno è arbitro di sé stesso, e quindi onestà e rispetto devono far parte del bagaglio di ogni golfista. Inoltre, esistono procedure da seguire per non incorrere in penalità o semplicemente per sfruttare a proprio favore determinate situazioni. Ecco perché è richiesto un esame delle regole, da sostenere presso uno dei circoli riconosciuti dalla Federazione. Oltre a regole di gioco sono necessarie regole di etichetta. Durante lo svolgimento delle gare ufficiali, più che dei veri e propri arbitri ci sono degli osservatori. Ogni concorrente è tenuto in pratica ad autocontrollarsi. In caso di controversie ci si appella ad un apposito comitato, il cui scopo principale è quello di far sapere ai giocatori cosa prevedono le regole nel caso specifico. E non mancano regole destinate a scoraggiare il gioco lento, che anzi si vanno man mano inasprendo con l'aumentare dei praticanti: ad esempio giocare una palla "provvisoria" quando è probabile che si sia persa la propria, onde evitare di perdere tempo nella ricerca. Principalmente si distinguono due tipi di gioco. Nel gioco "a buche" si assegna un punto al giocatore che conclude la buca nel minor numero di colpi (tenuto conto dell'handicap, delle penalità e degli abbuoni) e il vincitore è colui che al termine del percorso ha vinto più buche. Nel gioco "a colpi" il vincitore è il concorrente che ha percorso l'intero campo nel minor numero di colpi (sempre tenendo conto dell'handicap, delle penalità e degli abbuoni). Il regolamento disciplina inoltre in modo abbastanza rigoroso gli attrezzi utilizzati dai giocatori: se da una parte le nuove tecnologie permettono di realizzare bastoni e palle sempre più sofisticate e performanti, dall'altra le regole imposte si fanno sempre più restrittive, ma sempre nello spirito di gareggiare in modo fair. Ma non è stato sempre così, anzi è molto probabile che i golfisti per almeno 300 anni abbiano giocato praticamente senza regole scritte tanto semplice era il "loro" gioco che si distingueva da altri giochi di "mazze/bastoni e palle" solo per il fatto che si dovesse concludere con la palla infilata dentro una buca. L'introduzione delle regole scritte portò un minimo di ordine ma di certo tali regole furono mutuate da altre tra cui con ogni probabilità vi furono quelle di un gioco Francese detto jeu de mail.

IL CAMPO: Un campo da golf comprende generalmente 18 buche (ma esistono anche campi con 3, 9 o addirittura 27 buche), ciascuna con il suo punto di partenza posto ad una distanza che varia, in genere, tra 100 e 500 metri circa. Dal punto di partenza alla buca corre una striscia di prato rasato (fairway) fiancheggiata ai lati da fasce di erba più alta (rough), inoltre vi possono essere ostacoli di vario tipo per rendere più difficile raggiungere la buca: alberi, fosse riempite di sabbia (bunkers), stagni o laghetti. La buca è contrassegnata da una bandierina, per essere facilmente individuabile da lontano, e circondata da una zona più o meno ampia di prato particolarmente liscio e curato (green). Ogni buca ha un "numero di colpi previsto" chiamato par: si tratta del numero di colpi che un giocatore professionista impiega mediamente per terminare la buca. Questo numero dipende dalla lunghezza della buca (vale a dire la distanza dal punto di partenza alla buca) e va generalmente da 3 a 5. Quindi a seconda del suo valore si parla di buche "par 3", "par 4" o "par 5". La somma del par delle diverse buche dà il par del campo: per un percorso di 18 buche esso va normalmente da 69 a 72.

During the golf season a lot of sand gets displaced for the golfer hitting out of the bunkers and after a season or two sand must be added to some the bunkers to keep them at the consistent levels throughout the course. This will happen most often on a par three as there is a greater opportunity for the golfer's ball to end up in the bunker, which equals more people going into the bunker. Winds also blow some of the sand out as well. So the most important thing is to go around the course and get all the the traps ready for play and take into account which bunkers need more sand so all the bunkers are the same and consistent.

On another note, the Chinese were unaware when they embraced the Olympic torch idea that this "ancient, sacred tradition", was invented by Leni Riefenstadl, Hitler's filmmaker for the 1936 Olympics! It served Hitler well, and now the Chinese are breaking distance and number of cities visited records! They even plan to take it to the top of Mt Everest. Slate magazine said this about it:

"It seems Leni Riefenstahl, Hitler's filmmaker, invented the torch relay for the 1936 Berlin Olympics and then deployed it with "terrifying mastery," according to Die Welt, in her film Olympia.

What a disappointment this must all be for the China Daily, the English-language organ of the Chinese Communist Party, which last month bragged that the 2008 torch relay "will traverse the longest distance, cover the greatest area and include the largest number of people" since this ancient Greek custom was invented by the Nazis in 1936. After the chaos in Paris, the same newspaper was reduced to spluttering at the French press, the French people, and French culture itself: "Pride and prejudice," the newspaper intoned, have "cast a shadow on this ancient civilization."

"How utterly predictable. Even without the recent riots in Tibet, anything as ludicrous as a 130-day, 85,000-mile torch relay was going to attract a healthy dose of negative attention. Why does the thing have to go to so many cities, after all? Why does it need to go through Tibet? Why is it surrounded by track-suited thugs? Why does it travel in a customized jumbo jet? Wasn't this supposed to be a relay? And what is the symbolic significance of a battery-operated chemical flame, anyway? What does it have to do with athletes or world peace? This leg of the journey was the most tedious. We really weren't sure how is was going to work. Our goal was to leave Belgrade, Serbia, by train and travel to Bar, Montenegro. Then take a bus or taxi to the border of Albania and walk across. Once in Albania, we would have to take a taxi into a town to find a bus to take us to the Albanian border with Macedonia. Then we would walk across again and get a bus/taxi to get us to Lake Ohrid. Trying to do all this in 24 hours was a bad idea in retrospect.

I went to sleep hoping that the snoring might pass and that I would have all my assets in the morning. I got up in the morning and looked out the window to realize that we were on the most beautiful piece of track I had ever seen. It looked as though we were clinging to the side of a huge canyon climbing higher and higher. I stood in the hallway and watched the train weave its way up the side of the canyon. It was really amazing.

We eventually reached Bar, Montenegro. Tyler had to pay a Euro to use the bathroom and we tried to figure out how to get to the Albanian/Montenegro border. No one seemed to know English or want to talk to us so we hiked the 1.5km to town to find the tourist office. We found the office and they said we needed to hike back to the bus station and get a bus all the way to Ohrid. We were happy to hear it was going to be as easy as getting one bus the whole way to Ohrid. We hiked the 1.5km back to the buses and stopped for a nice little hamburger with some locals.

At the bus station they informed us there was no bus to Ohrid. We were now all confused. On our map it was only about half an inch to the border so we decided our best bet was going to be taking a taxi. We hopped in a taxi and tried to ask how much it would cost and he motioned 3 Euro. We were surprised at the great deal and happily settled into the short trip. The trip turned out to be much longer than it appeared as we were in the middle of the desert going through scrubby pine and desolate hills. I started to wonder if this guy was taking us to the wilderness to kill us. As my last shred of hope started to pass away I saw the beloved border crossing. I guess when the taxi driver said 3 Euro he meant 30, strange.

The crossing into Albania was boring to say the least. There was just a couple guards in the desert in a little shed. We successfully got out of Montenegro and walked to Albania and the guards were so happy to see Americans. They smiled and asked how long we were staying and when we said, “About 3 hours,” they seemed a little sad. One guy who didn't know any English decided to try to give us the breakdown of the Albanian bus system and talked and talked with us understanding nothing. He wrote a bunch of names on a piece of paper and we hopped into another taxi and were driven to the nearest town (While the guard was talking to us, a guy on a motorbike showed up with a tray in his hand carrying some coffee for the guards. As he was delivering it one of the other guards was observing the bike and knocked it over. There were was lots of yelling and blushing).

Albania is poor! On the way into town we passed shepherds, horses pulling wagons and little three wheeled trucks. Most people do not have cars so there are bikes and motorbikes everywhere. We found the bus system waiting for us. When I say bus system what I really mean is a fleet of minivans. Albania is small so they have tons of minivans that sit in each town until they are full. When they are full, they leave for the destination town (it is actually a quite efficient system if you don't have hard deadlines). Our minivan soon was filled with people and body odor and we started weaving our way through traffic on the way to the capital city, Tirana. We were dropped off and had no idea where the buses to the other cities were. Through inquiry, we finally figured it out and hiked the 2km to the new location. We had the hardest time finding the new minivan pick-up point but eventually found it.

By this point it was about 5 pm and our estimates showed that we weren't even going to get to the Macedonian border until after dark. I was getting pretty scared we weren't going to make it to our scheduled hostel and we would be sleeping in some Albanian trash heap (lots of them in Albania). A nice young guy struck up a conversation with us and said it was our lucky day. The minivan we were traveling in happened to be going directly to the border crossing at Macedonian. He saved our butts big time. We had been planning to get off at the next town to find get a different bus like the border guard had told us (We would have never made it).

This young guy had much to tell us. He told us all the countries that liked Americans and the ones that didn't. He said Albanians liked Americans because they knew that Kosovo was Albanian, not Serbian. I don't know if that is true but I'm happy he thinks so. He was really nice and we were so grateful for all his help. He did tell us about this special trout we should try to eat while in Ohrid. We later found out the trout is endangered!

The scenery while driving to the Macedonian border was beautiful: huge mountain passes, lots of green, and plenty of sun. The funny thing is the driver kept throwing trash out the window. I couldn't believe how cavalier he was about it. One of my favorite sights was a huge factory in Elbason. It was completely rusted at this point but it was massive. It must have covered hundreds of acres. It had whole cable car systems with huge buckets hanging to carry ore from one part of the complex to the other. There were countless large smoke stacks. I was overwhelmed by the size of the ruins, I took pictures but I don't think it captures the beauty.

There were men manning little pressure washers about every 5km, trying to get people to let them wash their car. I have never seen so many 'car washes,' it was amazing.

We got to the Albanian/Macedonian border after dark and walked across with little fanfare. We jumped in yet another taxi and arrived to our hostel. It took us about 24 hours and 4 countries to get to Ohrid and I was tired!

One fun fact about Albania is the huge number of bunkers in totally random places. Some estimates say there are 700,000 in total. We probably saw 100 or more in our short stay. Our book says most Albanians use the cement caverns to make sweet bunker love.

Speaking of bunker love, Tyler didn't shave this morning and had some nice stubble going. I have been trying to convince him he needs to grow a beard. He is passionately against it for some reason and continues to shave daily. I don't know how he does it, I can barely talk myself into shaving once a week.

A fim de desempenhar sua tacada da banca com eficiência é preciso estar consciente do que está acontecendo com a face do taco. Lembre-se que você está usando um taco com alto loft, em especial na areia o que significa que ele deve permanecer aberto após sua tacada. Quando você pega o taco e faz o seu swing, o que não queremos é que nada prejudique sua tacada não esquecendo da técnica. Mantenha seus pulsos retos após o golpe a bola ira sair suavemente da banca ficando bem confortável para o putt.

El pasado Jueves 13 de Marzo se celebró en el Campo Nieto Piña por tercer año consecutivo un festival musical en alusión al Día de Las Flores en la Ciudad de Guanajuato Capital.

Para esta edición se presentaron cuatro bandas: Somabit, Elis Paprika, Austin TV y Los Bunkers. A las dos primeras bandas no las vi. Sólamente vi las dos últimas bandas y al mismo tiempo de disfrutar su música pude hacer unas cuantas tomas fotográficas que aquí les comparto. Disfrútenlas.

El lugar estaba lleno. 6 mil quinientas personas, igual que la primera noche donde se presentó Miguel Bosé.

Abrieron Los Bunkers. Llegue tarde. Alcancé escuchar el último bis. Estuvieron potentes.

Luego vinieron los Lucybell. Estuvieron casi una hora. Se tocaron todos los temas desde Carnaval hasta Mataz. Se escucharon súper bien. Catarsis colectiva con Carnaval y Sudor y Ternura. Se nota la trayectoria. Casi al final se tiraron una frase que más adelante en la noche entendí. Agradecieron que estuvieran grandes grupos nacionales que se dedican a crear temas y a presentarlos en vivo.

No capté la frase hasta que aparecieron los argentinos de Dios Salve a la Reina.

Aparecieron media hora después y desde el primer minuto tuvieron problemas de sonido. Como que se les olvidó conectar un cable. Al cuarto tema se compuso la cosa.

Pero ya no era lo mismo. Los tipos salieron vestidos como si de verdad fueran Queen. Saludaron en inglés y animaban al público en inglés.

Tocaban bien. Igualito. Eso no más. Una copia de Queen. Exito asegurado si interpretaban los temas más conocidos. Así lo hicieron. Pero no era lo mismo. Les faltó potencia. Emoción. Era show, pero se notaba lo mismo. Se notó al tiro con Somebody to love. Veo el video de Queen y uno se emociona. Escuché a estos tipos y ná.

Al final de la noche Chancho en Piedra agradeció al público. Resumió la noche diciendo. Esta jornada estuvo espectacular. Nos presentó Vodanovic, escuchamos a los Bunkers, Lucybel y Dios salve a las peucas".

Chancho en piedra salieron cerca de la una de la mañana y de inmediato levantaron el ánimo. La mayoría se quedó a esperarlos y el grupo no defraudó. Animó al público, los hizo bailar, levantar las manos y aplaudir al gusto de ellos. Buena onda. Tocaron todos los temas que uno espera. Incluso 31 minutos. Un cierre alegre para una noche redonda.
