... that I've pretty much been working 7 days a week since last August? I think I put in about 6-8 for the full-time, and then another 4-6 in the evenings and 6-10 on the weekends for the studio projects. (You guys are keeping me busy!)

So despite the blistering heatwave this weekend, I managed to get out of the studio to catch a break for some much-needed treats!

Scored some delicious sweet treats from Lux Sugar at the Brooklyn Flea. I bought 2 regular sized and 4 mini cupcakes. (One didn't survive long enough for the photo op!)

Despite dreary weather, some the {NewNew} team braved the wet and cold to take part in the weekly Brooklyn Flea. Despite our drippy tent, we managed to have fun.

A big thank you to the visitors that showed. I was rather amused that someone actually had gotten the pronunciation of my shop name and "got it", (it's foo•bay•bee... like Fu Baby)... My Aunt Bea nickname for me that since junior high, and it stuck around. (No, she wasn't really my aunt, but that's what I called her back then.)

I definitely didn't do as well as last time out, but given the weather, I would've stayed home myself. (Paper goods and water don't mix.) But as the day wore on, we dried up a bit, and I was able to bring out my wedding invitations album.

One lovely couple stopped by and showed me their pretty Save the Dates, (which I absolutely love the color of), and asked me to replicate the color and layout for their invitations using one of my latest designs. I haven't had a chance to list several of my latest designs, but will do so shortly.

If you didn't have the chance to visit me at the Flea in April, come visit me at the Brooklyn Homeshow on May 16th and 17th. May 16th is a pre-show party from 7-10pm, and May 17th is the actual show itself. Either way stop on by and say hello, check out some of my wedding designs, or just come hang out with us! 170 Tillary Street #706.

This morning while boiling water to make a cup of Turkish coffee, I suddenly felt the urge to use my recent acquisition - the crinkled cup by Rob Brandt. But than it suddenly did not seem right to drink a proper coffee from a cup like this, so I made myself some instant coffee instead. Well, I need to relax my mind from grading and I admit, it sometimes works in a strange way. Anyway, I bought the cup (like me)originally designed in 1970's in a Brooklyn design store Spring with a nice selection of objects and a good taste of music. Speaking of Brooklyn and stuff I liked (but did not buy), on my way to the airport I stopped at Brooklyn Flea and spotted:
- elegant prints by Lotta Jansdotter (see the pic with elephant below)
- Polaroid-inspired work by Sean Tubridy
- sophisticated block printed T-shirts by 1Girl1Boy
- Ciarian Tully's photographs (his framed mixed media photographs look better than pics on the web page)

Last week I covered the much hyped and wildly popular Brooklyn Flea. I now feel it incumbent upon me to dedicate some space to my old-standby flea market the Elephant's Trunk. If you aren't familiar with The Trunk, it is a classic New England flea with all sorts of old and random things stretched out in a field located on Route 7 in New Milford, Connecticut, just slightly past the new mega-church. Natch.

Unlike the Brooklyn Flea which starts at 10am, The Trunk starts at 7am sharp. Getting up to New Milford from the city earlier than 9am is a feat and will make you regret your decision to go out drinking the night before. Once you make it up there (rent a car or ride share), you will find all sorts of people that you would expect to see at a flea market. The word eccentric would be a good place to start. That said, everyone is nice and there are some great finds to be had if you hunt. More pictures from this past Sunday after the jump. The full photo set can be found here.

We just received this email from Adjunct Faculty Jesse Willmon...

Have you ever thought:

"Golly, I sure do love buying stuff, especially those keen cards that my buddy Jesse makes. But he only sells them online and purchasing things over the internet is frightening. If only there was a way to buy those cards in person."

Well you are in luck because for the next two Sundays (April 13th and April 20th), I'm going to be at the Brooklyn Flea Market in beautiful Ft. Greene, Brooklyn selling my "100% Cute, 100% Evil" cards in person. I'll be part of the SuperMarket booth with a bunch of other artists feverishly selling our wares in a non-online situation.

The Brooklyn Flea Market is open from 10am to 5pm so you have lots of time consider buying cards in bulk.

Make sure to check out more of Jesse's work at his website. And if you can't make it to the flea market, don't despair--Jesse's wares are available online.

This weekend a friend and I went to the first Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. We didn't make it over until around 11am (my fault; hangover) but we still arrived to lots of ironic preppy hipsters and some good flea market action. It is nice that they do start things off later than the normal 6am craziness. Gives you time to get a bagel and some coffee before heading over. After checking things out I still prefer the Elephant's Trunk Flea in New Milford, CT. I do however give Brownstoner and the others involved credit for organizing everything. I'm sure in time, the Brooklyn Flea will be a mandatory Sunday outing. Some high points, low points and pictures after the jump.

The Good

Accommodating start time

Well organized

Location and access

Lots of vendors

People watching

No cover charge

The Bad

Too many craft-type vendors and screen printed things

Not enough eccentric flea market people

Needs more vendors that sell old things, furniture and Americana

Far too many types of tote bags for sale (and for me to say that...)

The Brooklyn Flea begins today and is bustling as I type. Not the best day for it—unlike yesterday it's frosty and gray outside. Lots of purple lips and red noses. The hot waffles stand from Wafels & Dinges was by far the hot spot with a steady line curling down one aisle of the Flea. Have to say: I was slightly underwhelmed by the wares on sale. But let me not focus on the negative so early in the life of the Flea. There were some pretty great jewelry stalls (I was eyeing a few YOVA Design pieces) and a few ladies and lads from Beaver St. Bikes were busy doing repairs. And amid all the hatted browsers and strapped-in babies, the highlight of my day: a number of adorable dogs in bags. Everywhere we turned there was a dog in a bag. Leather totes and canvas "I Am Not a Plastic Bag" bags were sprouting an ear here, a snout there. So we started snapping as stealthily as we could because we realized these people were not just keeping their hounds warm but avoiding retribution from "the authorities" standing at the entrance "enforcing" a scrappy sign on the fence declaring "No Dogs"! We're pretty sure one young lady carrying her dog with her bare hands got a talking to, but for the most part the "guards" seemed more occupied with analysis of people's purchases—we overheard one saying, "did you see that dresser? That was ugly." We got a few good shots though and will be back for more next week. As far as we can tell, the rule of thumb is: No Dogs (Except for Dogs In Bags)

We got it right this time, and headed over to Fort Greene earlier this afternoon. The Flea was buzzing given the chilly weather, but I didn't see many transactions. More hands in pockets vs. wallets. Come the real spring, this is going to be one crowded affair.

I'm listening to Beirut, courtesy of Sarah who made me a copy on decorated CD last year. It's a perfect Beirut sort of day...languid, heady, hearty, and sausagey.

A couple more days until the company sponsored cruise. Yes, I'm going on a cruise. It hasn't hit me yet either. I'm still agonizing some over the excessiveness of it all, and my lack of "resort wear". I'd rather add to my wardrobe by spending at Etsy here and here. I'd also like to say, due to recent experience transacting with the owners of these shops, that these ladies know how to deliver great service. Etsy could definitely teach the telecommunication industry, airline industry and the New York City Transit Authority a thing or two.

PS - Etsy was also at the Flea.

Just a slight diversion in my spring printing season... I took a little vacation to visit a dear friend for the Easter holiday. What a great trip, I am feeling SO rested and recharged. The weather has been perfect in Los Angeles, just what I needed after these long winter months.

Now I'm homeward-bound, ready to start working on items for the Brooklyn Flea, which starts April 6th. I'm thinking about selling cards and notebooks, but we'll see how that shapes up. I'll post some photos as I make stuff, I can't wait until it begins!
